Design of Carboxymethylcellulose/Poloxamer-Based Bioformulation Embedding Trichoderma afroharzianum for Agricultural Applications.

Microbial biological control agents are believed to be a potential alternative to classical fertilizers to increase the sustainability of agriculture. In this work, the formulation of Trichoderma afroharzianum T22 (T22) spores with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and Pluronic F-127 (PF-127) solutions was investigated. Rheological and microscopical analysis were performed on T22-based systems at three different CMC/PF-127 concentrations, showing that polymer aggregates tend to surround T22 spores, without viscosity, and the viscoelastic properties of the formulations were affected. Contact angle measurements showed the ability of PF-127 to increase the wettability of the systems, and the effect of the formulations on the viability of the spores was evaluated. The viability of the spores was higher over 21 days in all the formulations, compared to the control in water, at 4 and 25 °C. Finally, the effectiveness of the formulations on sweet basil was estimated by greenhouse tests. The results revealed a beneficial effect of the CMC/PF-127 mixture, but none on the formulation with T22. The data show the potential of CMC/PF-127 mixtures for the future design of microorganism-based formulations.

Coating with phenolic branched-chain fatty acid reduces Listeria innocua populations on apple fruit

An antimicrobial coating was produced by mixing phenolic branched-chain fatty acid (PBC-FA) with glycerol and a carboxymethyl cellulose solution (CMC) at pH 7. The resulting PBC-FA-CMC solution formed an emulsion with an average droplet size of 77 nm. The emulsion in the coating solution was stable for at least 30 days at 20 °C. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of the film formed from the PBC-FA emulsion was tested against a mixture of 3 strains of Listeria innocua (7 log CFU/mL). Film with a concentration of 1000 μg/mL of PBC-FA effectively reduced the population of L. innocua below the limit of detection (<1.48 log CFU/mL) in vitro. The effect of the 1000 μg/mL PBC-FA-CMC coating formulation was then evaluated against L. innocua inoculated on “Gala” apples. Results showed that compared with the non-coated control, the coating reduced L. innocua populations by ~2 log CFU/fruit and ~6 log CFU/fruit on the apple when enumerated on tryptic soy agar and selective media (PALCAM), respectively, indicating that PBC-FA applied as a coating on apples resulted in the sub-lethal injury of bacterial cells. When L. innocua was inoculated onto PBC-FA-coated apples, the L. innocua population decreased by ~4 log CFU/fruit during 14 days of shelf-life at 20 °C. The PBC-FA coating lowered the moisture loss but did not affect the color, firmness, or soluble solids content of apples during the 14-day at 20 °C. Overall, this study revealed that there is a potential that PBC-FA can be used as an antimicrobial coating to inactivate Listeria and preserve the quality of apples.

Functionalization of Cathode–Electrolyte Interface with Ionic Liquids for High-Performance Quasi-Solid-State Lithium–Sulfur Batteries: A Low-Sulfur Loading Study

We introduce a quasi-solid-state electrolyte lithium-sulfur (Li–S) battery (QSSEB) based on a novel Li-argyrodite solid-state electrolyte (SSE), Super P–Sulfur cathode, and Li-anode. The cathode was prepared using a water-based carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solution and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) as the binder while Li6PS5F0.5Cl0.5 SSE was synthesized using a solvent-based process, via the introduction of LiF into the argyrodite crystal structure, which enhances both the ionic conductivity and interface-stabilizing properties of the SSE. Ionic liquids (IL) were prepared using lithium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as the salt, with pre-mixed pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide (PYR) as solvent and 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) as diluent, and they were used to wet the SSE–electrode interfaces. The effect of IL dilution, the co-solvent amount, the LiTFSI concentration, the C rate at which the batteries are tested and the effect of the introduction of SSE in the cathode, were systematically studied and optimized to develop a QSSEB with higher capacity retention and cyclability. Interfacial reactions occurring at the cathode–SSE interface during cycling were also investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy supported by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. This work offers a new insight into the intimate interfacial contacts between the SSE and carbon–sulfur cathodes, which are critical for improving the electrochemical performance of quasi-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries.

Assessment of the ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus to create biofilms during wound healing in a rat model treated with carboxymethyl cellulose/carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel containing EDTA.

The primary objective of this study was to develop a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) hydrogel containing ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) as the materials for wound healing. CMC and CMCS solutions were prepared with a concentration of 4% (w/v). These solutions were made using normal saline serum with a concentration of 0.5% (v/v). Additionally, EDTA with the concentrations of 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2% (w/v) was included in the prepared polymer solution. The analysis of the hydrogels revealed that they possess porous structures with interconnected pores, with average in size 88.71 ± 5.93 μm. The hydrogels exhibited a swelling capacity of up to 60% of their initial weight within 24 h, as indicated by the weight loss and swelling measurements. The antibacterial experiments showed that the formulated CMC/CMCS/EDTA 0.5% hydrogel inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Moreover, the produced hydrogels were haemocompatible and biocompatible. At the last stage, the evaluation of wound healing in the animal model demonstrated that the use of the produced hydrogels significantly improved the process of wound healing. Finally, the findings substantiated the effectiveness of the formulated hydrogels as the materials for promoting wound healing and antibacterial agents.

Assessment of mixing behaviors of non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluids in short microdevices

Efficient chaotic microdevices have major importance across many potential applications in industrial processes and operations, which form essential parts of microfluidic devices. In microfluidics, The Two-Layer Crossing Channels Micromixer (TLCCM)exhibits notable characteristics in terms of mixing of Newtonian fluids which motivated us to compare it with other micromixers using pseudoplastic fluids. The examined micromixers are: L-Shape, OH, and OX. CFD code is utilized to numerically solve Navier-Stokes, the mass conservation and species transport equations. Therefore, the species transport model was selected to analyze the mixing process. The pseudoplastic fluids consist of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions, which are characterized using the power-law model, the flow behavior index ranging from 0.49 to 1 and generalized Reynolds number (Reg) varies from 0.2 to 70. The effectiveness of mixing was assessed through the mixing degree across various cross-sectional areas. To address this, the analysis encompassed mass fraction contours, velocity profiles, streamlines, flow rates, and the associated mixing energy costs. Our findings report that the TLCCM micromixer presents the elevated mixing degree, where their obtained values vary between 0.80526 and 0.99765. It appears that the occurrence of secondary flows has an additional benefit to improve the mixing performances. Moreover, it requires less mixing energy costs versus other micromixers, where their values vary between 0.00036 and 0.49 W.

Preparation of CMC-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) semi-interpenetrating hydrogel with temperature-sensitivity for water retention

The CMC-PNIPAM hydrogel with semi-interpenetrating structure and temperature-sensitivity was prepared by in-situ polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) solution at room temperature. The mass ratio of CMC to NIPAM was a key factor influencing the network structure and property of CMC-PNIPAM hydrogel. The low critical phase transition temperature (LCST) of CMC-PNIPAM hydrogels increased from 34.4 °C to 35.8 °C with the mass ratio of CMC to NIPAM rising from 0 to 1.2. The maximum compressive stress of CMC-PNIPAM hydrogel reached to 26.7 kPa and the relaxation elasticity was 52 % at strain of 60 %. The viscoelasticity of CMC-PNIPAM hydrogel was consistent with the generalized Maxwell model. The maximum swelling ratio in deionized water was 170.25 g·g−1 (dried hydrogel) with swelling rate of 2.57 g·g−1·min−1 at 25 °C. CMC-PNIPAM hydrogel hardly absorbed water above LCST, but the swollen hydrogel could release water at the rate of 0.36 g·g−1·min−1 once exceeding LCST. The test of water retention showed that soil mixed with 2 wt% dried CMC-PNIPAM hydrogel could retain 13.08 wt% water after 30 days at 25 °C that was 4.4 times than that of controlled soil without CMC-PNIPAM hydrogel. The semi-interpenetrating CMC-PNIPAM hydrogel showed a potential to conserve water responding to temperature.

Dehydration of collagen hydrogel simply by immersion in sodium carboxymethylcellulose solution

Pre-dehydration of collagen-based hydrogel can result in reduced energy consumption in their large-scale production. This article reported a method to dehydrate collagen hydrogel by simply immersing hydrogel into sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) solution, and the dehydration regularity and possible dehydration mechanisms were investigated. Collagen hydrogel was dehydrated in CMC solution with a dehydration rate of up to 68%, which favored the subsequent drying process as the drying time reduced by at least 18%. The CMC concentration, degree of substitution (DS), molecular weight (MW), and immersion time were all important factors affecting dehydration performance. The main dehydration mechanism was shown to be the Donnan equilibrium, which was attributed to the semi-permeability of the collagen hydrogel and the osmotic pressure difference at the interface induced by the CMC. Low MW CMC was able to penetrate into collagen hydrogel while high MW CMC was still difficult in penetrating into collagen hydrogel even in prolonged immersion time. Moreover, CMC-induced dehydration did not change the collagen fiber structures. This study provides a new pathway for the pre-dehydration of collagen-based materials, and also can help the design of collagen gel materials.

Identification of lubricant viscosity to minimize the frictional impact of colonoscopy on colonic mucosa

Applying a lubricant to the colonic mucosa and reducing the dynamic friction coefficient (DFC) between the endoscopic shaft and colonic mucosa may reduce colonoscopy invasiveness. However, the ideal lubricant viscosity remains unknown. Here, we developed a DFC measurement model integrating samples of colonic mucosa from forensic autopsy specimens into a simulated bowel bend and determined the low-friction lubricant viscosity that minimizes the DFC. Carboxymethyl cellulose, xanthan gum, hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium alginate, and sodium polyacrylate aqueous solutions of various concentrations were used as lubricants. Low-friction lubricants minimized the load on the colonic mucosa during colonoscope insertion and reduced the total endoscopy insertion time. The highest correlation was between the DFC and the lubricant viscosity at a shear rate of 100 1/s. The lowest DFC was almost constant at approximately 0.09, irrespective of the chemical composition of the lubricant, and the low-friction lubricant viscosity (100 1/s) was 0.031–0.086 (median: 0.059). The viscosities of conventional colonoscopic lubricants were suitable for lubricating the anorectal skin owing to their low DFC, but too high for lubricating the colonic mucosa because of their high DFC. The utilization of the low-friction lubricants with the optimal viscosity can reduce the stress on colonic mucosa during colonoscopy.

Liquid Flow Patterns and Particle Settling Velocity in a Taylor-Couette Cell Using Particle Image Velocimetry and Particle Tracking Velocimetry

Summary Controlling the downhole pressure is an important parameter for successful and safe drilling operations. Several types of weighting agents (i.e., high-density particles), traditionally barite particles, are added to maintain the desired density of the drilling fluid (DF). The DF density is an important design parameter for preventing multiple drilling complications. These issues are caused by the settling of the dense particles, an undesired phenomenon also referred to as sagging. Therefore, there is a need to understand the settling characteristics of heavy particles in such scenarios. To this end, simultaneous measurements of liquid phase flow patterns and particle settling velocities have been conducted in a Taylor-Couette (TC) cell with a rotating inner cylinder and stationary outer cylinder separated by an annular gap of 9.0 mm. Liquid flow patterns and particle settling velocities have been measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) techniques, respectively. Experiments have been performed by varying the rotational speed of the inner cylinder up to 200 rev/min, which is used in normal drilling operations. Spherical particles with diameters of 3.0 mm or 4.0 mm and densities between 1.2 g/cm3 and 3.95 g/cm3 were used. The liquid phases studied included deionized (DI) water and mineral oil, which are the basic components of a non-Newtonian DF with a shear-thinning viscosity. The DF is a mud-like emulsion of opaque appearance, which impedes the ability to observe the liquid flow field and particle settling in the TC cell. To address this issue, a solution of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with a 6% weight concentration in DI water was used. This non-Newtonian solution displays shear-thinning rheological behavior and was used as a transparent alternative to the opaque DF. For water, PIV results have shown wavy vortex flow (WVF) to turbulent Taylor vortex flow (TTVF), which agrees with the flow patterns reported in the literature. For mineral oil, circular Couette flow (CCF) was observed at up to 100 rev/min and vortex formation at 200 rev/min. For CMC, no vortex formation was observed up to 200 rev/min, only CCF. The settling velocities for all particles in water matched with the particle settling velocities predicted using the Basset-Boussinesq-Oseen (BBO) equation of motion. For mineral oil and CMC, the results did not match well with the predicted settling velocities, especially for heavy particles due possibly to the radial particle migration and interactions with the outer cylinder wall.

Physicochemical characteristics of a nanocomposite film based on purified sodium carboxymethylcellulose and selenium nanoparticles

AbstractIn this study, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were synthesized and stabilized by reducing sodium selenite using ascorbic acid in an aqueous solution of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na‐CMC) with a degree of substitution of 0.97 and a degree of polymerization of 810. IR‐Fourier spectroscopy revealed that coordination bonds between functional groups in Na‐CMC and SeNPs resulted in the development of polymer‐metal complexes. UV–Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) methods were used to determine the SeNP sizes in the structure of the nanocomposite film. Investigation of the stabilization and nonstabilization of SeNPs over several cycles has shown that the effect of the polymer matrix of Na‐CMC on the stabilization of nanoparticles was achieved for 672 h, which was confirmed by the unchanged size distribution and resistance to change of the SeNPs synthesized in Na‐CMC solutions.

Acid-Induced Gelation of Carboxymethylcellulose Solutions.

The present work offers a comprehensive description of the acid-induced gelation of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), a water-soluble derivative of cellulose broadly used in numerous applications ranging from food packaging to biomedical engineering. Linear viscoelastic properties measured at various pH and CMC contents allow us to build a sol-gel phase diagram and show that CMC gels exhibit broad power-law viscoelastic spectra that can be rescaled onto a master curve following a time-composition superposition principle. These results demonstrate the microstructural self-similarity of CMC gels and inspire a mean-field model based on hydrophobic interchain association that accounts for the sol-gel boundary over the entire range of CMC content under study. Neutron scattering experiments further confirm this picture and suggest that CMC gels comprise a fibrous network cross-linked by aggregates. Finally, low-field NMR measurements offer an original signature of acid-induced gelation from a solvent perspective. Altogether, these results open avenues for the precise manipulation and control of CMC-based hydrogels.

Hyperuricemia Induces Reproductive Damage in Male Rats through Zinc Homeostasis Imbalance and Oxidative Stress

Studies have reported the adverse effects of hyperuricemia on male reproduction, but the mechanism is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the mechanism of hyperuricemia on reproductive system damage in male rats. The rats were divided into a control group and a model group. Rats were given hypoxanthine and potassium oxonate dissolved in 0.5% (w/v) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose solution to induce the hyperuricemia (HUA) model. After 6 weeks, the blood, testis, and epididymis tissues of the anesthetized rats were collected for further experiments and analysis. Compared with the control rats, the serum uric acid of HUA rats was significantly increased, and the serum testosterone, sperm count, and motility were significantly decreased. The protein expression of testosterone-related molecules CYP11A1, 3β-HSD, and StAR was downregulated in the testis of HUA rats. The protein expression of blood–testis barrier (BTB) related molecules ZO-1 and Connexin43 was downregulated in the testis of HUA rats. Compared with the control group, the zinc content and zinc-containing enzymes (ALP and LDH) were decreased, and the mRNA and protein expression of zinc transporters (ZnT4 and ZIP7) were downregulated in the testis of HUA rats. Furthermore, the level of MDA increased and the activities of CAT, GSH-PX, and SOD decreased in the testicular tissue of HUA rats. The PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in the testis of HUA rats was activated. However, there was no significant change in the protein expression of autophagy associated molecules LC3, Beclin1, and ATG5 in the testis of HUA rats. Thus, the conclusion is that hyperuricemia can lead to the destruction of BTB, impaired testosterone synthesis, and decreased sperm count and motility in male rats, mainly by inducing zinc homeostasis imbalance and oxidative stress, rather than autophagy.

Protective role of hesperidin in finasteride-induced testicular toxicity in adult male Wistar rats: Insights into oxidative stress, apoptosis, and ultrastructure of seminiferous tubules

A negative impact of finasteride on fertility has been reported, in which over production of reactive oxygen species and apoptosis were implicated. Hesperidin, a plant-derived bioflavonoid with antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects, may mitigate these adverse effects. In order to investigate the possible protective role of hesperidin against finasteride-induced seminiferous tubules toxicity in adult male Wistar rats, 60 rats were randomized into five groups (I-V) receiving distilled water, 0.5% sodium carboxymethylcellulose solution, hesperidin, finasteride, and combined hesperidin and finasteride respectively. Testicular weight, sperm count and motility were determined. Testicular tissue homogenates were prepared to measure the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), reduced glutathione (GSH) and the gene expression of caspase-3 and B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl2). Testes were processed for light and electron microscopic evaluation. Johnsen score was calculated. Administration of finasteride resulted in significantly decreased testicular weights, sperm count and motility, Johnsen score, tissue levels of TAC and GSH together with significant increase in tissue MDA. Gene expression revealed significantly increased caspase-3 and decreased Bcl2. Furthermore, finasteride disrupted the seminiferous tubules, causing degenerative changes affecting Sertoli cells and spermatogenic cells. Co-administration of hesperidin with finasteride resulted in improvement in testicular weights, TAC, GSH, Bcl2, Johnsen score, sperm count and motility as well as preservation of the structure of the seminiferous tubules. To conclude, hesperidin was found to have a protective potential on finasteride-induced oxidative stress, apoptosis and testicular structural damage.

Chitosan and sodium carboxymethylcellulose biocomplex interaction properties for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications

ABSTRACT The naturally occurring polymers chitosan (CH) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) have attracted the interest of researchers in a variety of biomedical and pharmaceutical applications such as drug delivery, cosmetics, and tissue engineering. However, CMC and CH have certain limitations for use in controlled aqueous CMC/CH mixed solutions. In this study, aqueous solutions of CMC and CH with the same concentration of 0.5 g/l and pH 6 are mixed under atmospheric conditions. The effects of temperature and molar volume fraction X1 of CMC on the decreased electrical conductivity of CMC/CH mixed solutions were studied at different temperatures ranging from 15°C to 80°C. We highlighted that different regions can be distinguished in the aqueous CMC/CH complexes, depending on the composition and electrostatic interactions of the solutions, which are associated with significantly different phase behaviors.

Effect of carboxymethyl cellulose, icodextrin and hyaluronic acid solutions on postoperative intraabdominal adhesion formation in rabbits and the role of cytokines in intraabdominal adhesion formation

In this study, the aim was to investigate the effects of 1% CMC, 4% ICO and 0.4% HA solutions in preventing postoperative IAs and their contribution to peritoneal wound healing, as well as the relationship of cytokines with the formation of postoperative IAs in rabbits. The material of the study consisted of 32 healthy rabbits. Rabbits underwent median laparotomy following general anesthesia. Serosal abraded was created at the antimesenteric border of the cecum. Next, a 3 × 2 cm peritoneum was excised on the right abdominal wall and the defect was closed using with a 2/0 silk suture. The rabbits were randomly assigned to either of the following four treatment groups: CNT (0.9% NaCl), ICO (4% icodextrin), HA (0.4% hyaluronic acid) and CMC (1% carboxymethyl cellulose). Both cecum and peritoneal surfaces were treated with 20 ml each of treatment solutions. On the 7th postoperative day, the rabbits were euthanized with a lethal dose of sodium pentobarbital and the degree of adhesion was evaluated. Samples taken from the peritoneal defect were examined histopathologically and tissue hydroxyproline levels were measured. Serum TNF-α, IL-1 and IL-6 levels were measured from blood samples taken before the surgery and at 1, 6, 24 and 48 hours after the surgery. It was observed that the adhesion grade in the HA group (p &lt; 0.05) and CMC group (p &lt; 0.01) was significantly lower than the control group. Although peritoneal tissue hydroxyproline levels were lower in the other groups compared to the control group, they were not statistically significant (p &gt; 0.05). In rabbits with adhesion formation, it was determined that TNF-α levels increased at the 6th postoperative hour (p &lt; 0.05), and IL-6 levels increased at the 6th, 24th and 48th postoperative hours (p &lt; 0.001) compared to preoperative. In this study, treating tissues with 0.4% HA and 1% CMC solutions suppressed peritoneal inflammation, and this resulted in an increase in the levels of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6. It has been determined that the application of these solutions reduces postoperative adhesion formation. It was concluded that TNF-α and especially IL-6, which are proinflammatory cytokines, can be a non-invasive biomarker in determining postoperative IA formation and evaluating the adhesive process.

Solution plasma mediated synthesis of antibacterial nanobiocomposites using carboxymethyl cellulose and silver as electrodes

In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) biocomposites were synthesized using a solution plasma process (SPP). The utilization of AgNO3 as a precursor, along with tungsten electrodes, introduces significant impurities into the biocomposites. Therefore, to ensure purity, we employed silver electrodes in the production of biocomposites. The SPP involved discharging plasma at 800 V, 30 kHz for 7 min in CMC solutions with concentrations of 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0%. The UV–Vis spectroscopy results revealed a peak near 400 nm, and the intensity of the peak increased as the CMC concentration decreased. The biocomposites had no change in the chemical structure during SPP. Porous matrix with fringed edges and spherical AgNP was observed by SEM/EDS and TEM analysis. The average particle size and the zeta potential of CMC/AgNPs determined by DLS analysis were 3.1 ± 0.1 nm and −41.8 ± 0.9 mV, respectively. The CMC/AgNP (0.3%, 7 min) exhibited growth inhibition zones ranging from 9.8 to 17.2 mm. The minimal inhibitory concentrations for Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and yeast were found to be in the ranges of 33.9–50.9, 102 and 338 μg mL−1, respectively. These results demonstrate that biocomposites of CMC/AgNPs, synthesized using silver electrodes within a CMC matrix, exhibit efficient antimicrobial properties, indicating their potential for sustainable utilization as polymer-based materials for wound healing.

Lightweight, flame retardant Janus carboxymethyl cellulose aerogel with fire-warning properties for smart sensor

Lightweight, flame retardant biomass aerogels combining with multi-functionalities are promising for thermal insulation, noise absorption and smart sensors. However, high flammability hinders the application of these aerogels in extreme condition. Herein, lightweight, flame retardant aerogel with fire-warning properties fabricated from resource-abundant graphite and green carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is reported. During sonicating expandable graphite (EG) in CMC solution, CMC not only fabricates the downsizing process via hydrogen bonding effect but also forms stable dispersions. Then biomass aerogel is fabricated by freeze-drying strategy and enhanced by metal ionic cross-linking method. This aerogel demonstrates Janus properties for electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. Due to the synergistic flame retardant effect of graphite nanocomposite and metal ions with a barrier effect and catalytic carbonization capacity, the flame retardancy of these aerogels are enhanced with fire-warning properties. Furthermore, these aerogels are used for monitoring physical deformations as smart sensors, which provides inspiration and a sustainable solution for developing low-cost biomass aerogel with multifunction.

Agaricus Subrufescens ameliorates ovarian dysfunction and regulates altered biochemical parameters in rats with Letrozole induced polycystic ovarian syndrome

ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to investigate the effects of an ethanolic extract derived from Agaricus subrufescens on rat models exhibiting Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) induced by Letrozole.MethodsA total of thirty female Wistar rats were divided into five groups, each consisting of six rats. The negative control group was administered a volume of 1 mL of a 0.5% solution of carboxy methylcellulose (CMC). Letrozole (1 mg/kg) was administered to additional groups for a duration of 21 days in order to induce polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Animals designated as positive controls were euthanized on the 22nd day. Both the test group and the standard group were subjected to treatment from the 22nd day to the 36th day. The experimental group was administered ethanolic extract of Agaricus subrufescens at doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg p.o, while the control group received clomiphene citrate at a dose of 1 mg/kg. The study observed various physiological markers in individuals with polycystic ovarian disease, including estimated blood glucose levels, total cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, and hormonal fluctuations such as increased testosterone and estrogen levels, as well as decreased progesterone levels. The presence of menstrual irregularities was confirmed through the examination of vaginal smears and histopathological changes in the ovaries.ResultsThe consumption of Agaricus subrufescens was found to have a significant impact on various physiological parameters, including blood glucose levels, testosterone levels, anovulation, and menstrual irregularity. All therapeutic interventions significantly normalized the levels of serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (SGPT). The rats with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that were induced by Letrozole exhibited increased levels of urea and creatinine. The findings of this study indicate that the administration of Agaricus subrufescens therapy has a protective effect on renal function, as evidenced by a reduction in serum levels of urea and creatinine. In rats with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) induced by Letrozole, the inhibition of hepatic synthesis, promotion of ovarian follicle immaturity, and elevation of androgen secretions result in an increase in the weight of the liver and ovaries. The weight of endocrine organs exhibited a decrease across all treatment groups. The histopathological examination of PCOS specimens revealed an increased presence of cysts and theca lutein cells. The group of rats with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that did not receive treatment exhibited a higher number of cysts compared to the groups that received treatment.ConclusionThis study demonstrated that the administration of Letrozole orally resulted in the development of polycystic ovarian disease. The results indicated heightened levels of blood glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as alterations in hormone levels such as increased testosterone and estrogen, and decreased progesterone. These hormonal changes were accompanied by menstrual irregularities, which were confirmed through the examination of vaginal smears and histopathological analysis of the ovaries in the control group with polycystic ovarian disease. The treatment groups that received Agaricus subrufescens exhibited a decrease in blood glucose, total cholesterol, and testosterone levels.

Turbulent flow of a shear-thinning non-Newtonian CMC-based nanofluid in twisted finned tubes with an elliptical profile

In this article, the forced convective turbulent flow of a shear-thinning non-Newtonian nanofluid through twisted tubes with elliptical cross sections is numerically studied and analyzed at various Reynolds numbers. The base fluid of the studied nanofluid is 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose solution in water (which has non-Newtonian behavior of shear-thinning), and it contains copper oxide nanoparticles. Two types of twisted tubes are considered: finned tubes and unfinned ones. The finite volume method is utilized, and the two-equation model of k-ε has been applied to analyze the flow characteristics of the turbulent problem. The computational results demonstrate an excellent agreement with respect to already published reports, which is a testament to our reasonable and correct procedure. The effects of pipe wall twisting on the average Nusselt number have been investigated. The achievements demonstrate a powerful secondary and rotating flow is formed with the tube surface twisting. This secondary flow causes better mixing and increases the average Nusselt number. The increase is up to 45% for the unfinned case and 62% for the finned case in comparison with the tube without projections. In addition, the coefficient of friction in these pipes increases to 62% and 104% for the unfinned and finned tubes, respectively. It is also observed that by increasing the length of the fin and adding nanoparticles up to 1.5%, the highest value of the performance evaluation criterion (i.e. 1.78) in the twisted finned tube could be achieved, which occurred at the Reynolds number of 4000. The combination of present geometry and the working fluid of shear-thinning non-Newtonian CMC-based nanofluid is the main novelty of this work, and the results can be applicable and reliable in the relevant industries.

Rheological properties of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solution: Impact of high intensity ultrasound

Today sonication process is used as a new green tool with unique impacts on foods preservation and processing. Ultrasonic modification is an appropriate strategy to obtain good gums with useful physicochemical characteristics and molecular structure. This research aimed to analyze the impacts of sonication at different intensities (0, 75, and 150 W) and time (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 min) on the viscosity and rheological characteristics of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solution. The results confirmed that the apparent viscosity of CMC solution reduced from 0.030 to 0.021 Pa.s with increasing shear-rate from 12.2 s−1 to 134.5 s−1 (75 W for 10 min). Also, the apparent viscosity of CMC solution reduced from 0.028 to 0.019 Pa.s with enhancing the sonication time from 0 to 20 min (shear-rate = 61 s−1, 150 W). Various rheological equations were employed to fit the empirical values, and the results confirmed that the Power law model was the best fit to explain the flow behaviour of CMC solution. The consistency coefficient of CMC solution significantly reduced from 0.065 Pa.sn to 0.032 Pa.sn (p < 0.05) with enhancing sonication time from 0 to 20 min (75 W). Furthermore, the consistency coefficient of CMC solution decreased significantly (p < 0.05) while the ultrasonic power enhanced. Flow behaviour index of CMC solution enhanced significantly (p < 0.05) while the intensity and time of sonication enhanced.
