The structural and optical properties of PVA/CMC copolymer cured by UV irradiation for different times

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) blend films with equal amounts (0.25 g) of both polymers were prepared through a simple and low-cost comparative casting method. Then, the PVA/CMC blend films were exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation for varied time intervals (1, 12, 26, 32, 40 and 48 h). The UV-irradiation effect on the physical properties of as-prepared films, including the structure, morphology, composite and optical properties (transmittance, absorbance and band gap (E g)), was examined. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy images showed that UV irradiation had a strong effect on the shape of PVA/CMC blend films. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed various crystalline qualities in the microstructure of as-synthesized samples. The Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that the UV-irradiation time and CMC film had a positive impact on the blend polymer structure since covalent connections were formed between CMC and PVA. Furthermore, the analysis results of optical inspections showed that the absorbance of the PVA/CMC films improved with an increment in irradiation time from 1 to 40 h. Important tuning of the E g values of blend films was realized. It showed a slight increase from 4.64 to 4.84 eV with increasing irradiation time from 1 to 40 h. The E g value (3.21 eV), however, displayed an inverted behavior due to an increased irradiation time of 48 h. This reduction could be ascribed to the creation of defects inside the blend band gap. Finally, the physical property modification of PVA/CMC blend film using UV irradiation made it an amazing contender in the optoelectronic field.

Deep insight into physical properties of carboxymethyl cellulose-barium oxide nanocomposites

Nanocomposites, blending the unique properties of inorganic nanoparticles with polymers, are gaining momentum in various industries. This study delves into the synthesis and characterization of barium oxide (BaO)-doped carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) nanocomposites, focusing on their structural, optical, electrical, and dielectric properties. Using an in-situ polymerization method, CMC films were doped with 5 % and 10 % BaO nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the doped samples exhibited enhanced crystallinity compared to pure CMC, with crystallinity percentages measured at 37.95 % and 28.86 % for 5 % and 10 % BaO, respectively, indicating the successful incorporation of BaO. Scanning electron microscopy illustrated the distribution of BaO nanoparticles, showing spherical agglomerations on the film surface. SEM analysis reveals emergence of spherical agglomerations and bright spots on nanocomposite film surface upon BaO introduction, indicating BaO nanoparticles presence. Further, the BaO nanoparticles act as catalytic and nucleating agents, influencing crystalline structure nucleation and growth, potentially enhancing film homogeneity and structural integrity. In addition, UV–visible spectroscopy elucidated the optical properties, indicating a shift in the bandgap from indirect to direct with BaO addition. The bandgap values decrease upon the addition of BaO, indicating a transition from an amorphous to a nanocrystalline structure, with respective reduction percentages of 22.73 % and 10.71 % for the 5%BaO/CMC and 10 %BaO/CMC samples compared to CMC. Electrical conductivity measurements showed enhanced conductivity in 10 % BaO/CMC due to improved charge carrier mobility, supported by dielectric studies demonstrating increased dielectric. The introduction of 5 % and 10 % BaO resulted in reductions of approximately 62.06 % and 65.77 %, respectively, compared to the pure CMC sample. This decrease in dielectric loss indicates an enhancement in the electrical properties of the nanocomposites. This comprehensive investigation could give further insights into the different properties of BaO-doped CMC nanocomposites, offering insights into their potential applications in various fields such as electronics, energy storage, and optoelectronics.

Zirconium‑cerium modified polyvinyl alcohol/NaCMC biocomposite film: Synthesis of films through high-speed shear assisted technique and removal fluoride from water

A new zirconium and cerium-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) film (PVA/CMC-Zr-Ce) was synthesized thru a high-speed shear-assisted method and its adsorption for the removal of fluoride was studied, in which the NaCMC provided –COONa for ion exchange between Na and Zr-Ce, thus the loading amount of Zr-Ce on films was accordingly increased. The morphology and structure of PVA/CMC-Zr-Ce were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Besides, the mechanical properties, water contact angle, and swelling ratio of film were also evaluated. The addition of high-speed shear improved the dispersion of the emulsion system, and PVA/CMC-Zr-Ce film with good adsorption performance and film stability was prepared. While, it was found that the adsorption capacity could reach 67.25 mg/g and equilibrium time could reach 20 min. The adsorption mechanism of PVA/CMC-Zr-Ce revealed that ion exchange between hydroxide and fluoride, electrostatic interactions and complexation were the dominating influencing factors. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that PVA/CMC-Zr-Ce film- synthesized with high-speed shear assistance technique is a promising adsorbent for fluoride removal from water.

Influence of rice straw based nanocellulose loading in sodium carboxymethyl cellulose

The goal of this research is to produce renewable and biodegradable polymers based nanocomposite films. In this study, mixture of cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibers, collectively termed as nanocellulose was extracted from agricultural waste (rice straws). Nanocellulose (NC) filled sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films were prepared via spin coating method. Various amount of NC (0, 20, 40 wt%) were added to CMC to prepare NC filled CMC nanocomposite film. Structural, chemical, morphological and thermal properties were studied through XRD, FTIR, SEM and TGA. It was found that CMC filled NC films have higher crysatllinality along UV blocking effect with 73 % visible light transmittance. Strong H-bonding between OH-group of NC and –COOH group of CMC resulted into stable and flexible nanocomposite film. Furthermore, thermal studies confirmed that strong hydrogen bonding within CMC and NC for 40 % NC filled CMC. It resulted for phase transition of nanocomposite film through fusion at higher temperature and high mass residue as compared to bare CMC and NC.

Effects of fatty acid esters on mechanical, thermal, microbial, and moisture barrier properties of carboxymethyl cellulose-based edible films

Fatty acid esters being biodegradable and environment friendly has been a sought-after class of molecule for various food grade applications. This work involves the incorporation of fatty acid esters namely cetyl-caprylate and cetyl-caprate in edible Carboxymethyl cellulose -based films. The esters were enzymatically synthesized by esterification of caprylic acid and capric acid respectively with cetyl alcohol at a molar ratio of 1:1, using Candida antarctica lipase B which was immobilized (10 % w/w) at 65 °C. Carboxymethyl cellulose films were prepared. To it, glycerol and by emulsification, cetyl-caprylate or cetyl-caprate esters were amalgamated. Film characterizations involved analysis of surface morphology, mechanical properties, and thermal properties. It was further characterized by X-Ray diffraction analysis, water vapor permeability, and moisture uptake. Barrier property carboxymethyl cellulose films showed significant improvement due to the incorporation of cetyl-caprylate or cetyl-caprate esters. However, when the film's melting point was measured, it was seen that glycerol influenced the thermal properties more prominently than cetyl-caprylate and cetyl-caprate esters. Thus, the addition of an optimized amount of glycerol and cetyl-caprylate or cetyl-caprate esters to the carboxymethyl cellulose films is required for improved mechanical strength and better thermal properties. Further, an antimicrobial well diffusion assay of both the esters established the antimicrobial property of the same, which thereby recommends the addition of the wax esters even more.

Extraction and Characterization of Cellulose from Broccoli Stems as a New Biopolymer Source for Producing Carboxymethyl Cellulose Films.

The use of food and agricultural waste-derived carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) has become of interest due to their biodegradability and cost-effectiveness. In the current research, cellulose was extracted from broccoli stems to produce carboxymethyl cellulose using a carboxymethylation reaction via chloroacetic acid (CAA) and sodium hydroxide (5-10 M). The effects of different synthesis conditions on the degree of substitution (DS) and viscosity of the synthesized CMC powder were investigated. The mechanical properties, water vapor permeability (WVP), and colour of CMC films were also evaluated. The results showed that CMC with the highest DS value (0.60) and the highest viscosity of 0.5 Pa·s could be synthesized from broccoli stems at a concentration of 7.5 M NaOH and a cellulose-to-chloroacetic acid ratio of 1 : 1.2. At CMC concentration of 4 g/100 mL with 0.8 g/100 mL of glycerol, the films had the highest tensile strength (31.91 MPa), whereas with 1.2 g/100 mL glycerol, more flexible films with elongation at break of 27.56% were produced. CMC films with the highest WVP (7.87 × 103 gm2·mmHg-1/day) were made with 6 g/100 mL of CMC and 1.8 g/100 mL of glycerol. This research proposes a new source of cellulose to produce biodegradable packaging materials to initiate a practical basis for food waste reuse.

The improvement of water barrier property in gelatin/carboxymethyl cellulose composite film by electrostatic interaction regulation and its application in strawberry preservation

Gelatin (GL) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are common natural components for edible films, but their water barrier performance are finite as hydrophilic polymers. In this study, a GL/CMC water barrier film was prepared, characterized and applied. The microstructure results showed that complex coacervation at pH 2.0 and cross-linking effect of sodium benzoate resulted in strong interaction forces and dense structure of this film. Compared with pure GL or CMC film, this novel composite film decreased water vapor permeability by approximately 90%, and possessed applicable water solubility (51.5%) and stronger barrier to oxygen and UV light. Acidic environment and sodium benzoate endowed antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the water barrier coating film decreased water loss by 47.8% and improved overall quality of fresh strawberries stored at 25 °C for 6 d. Therefore, the novel water barrier film based on complex coacervation and cross-linking is promising to control the postharvest quality of perishable berries.

Multifunctional carboxymethyl cellulose film by adjusting cellulose structure through molten salt hydrates

The functional and environmentally friendly materials derived from cellulose have attracted increasing attention due to their extensive application. In this work, a new approach for preparation of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films by adjusting the structure of cellulose with molten salt hydrates (MSHs) was proposed. The dissolving ability of cellulose in single and mixed MSHs was studied, and the structure of regenerated cellulose was characterized. The mechanism of cellulose dissolution and regeneration revealed that cellulose regenerated from mixed MSH (LiCl–2ZnCl2–6H2O) was conducive to derivatization. CMC films were synthesized from regenerated cellulose, and their structure–property relationships were investigated. CMC films with good mechanical strength and transmittance and CMC-H films with water resistance and flexibility were successfully prepared, illustrating that adjusting cellulose structure by using MSHs is an effective strategy for developing multifunctional CMC films.

Characterization of hemicellulose‐carboxymethyl cellulose blend films: Enhancement of the physicochemical, thermal, and mechanical properties

AbstractThis study investigates the influence of hemicellulose (Hc) on the chemical composition, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and morphology of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Hc was isolated from oil palm trunk and then added into CMC at 10–30 wt% to prepare Hc‐CMC films via solution casting method. The addition of Hc resulted in reduced visual transparency, rendering the blend films opaque. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy verified the chemical interaction between Hc and CMC by revealing persistent and robust hydrogen bonding at specific spectral peaks (3483–3045 cm−1). The interaction between Hc and CMC was further indicated by the rougher interfacial structure as revealed in scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermal analysis via differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry analysis indicated a decrement in thermal stability as Hc loadings increased in the CMC films. The highest tensile properties were observed in Hc‐CMC blend films at a 20 wt% Hc loading, showcasing notable enhancement about 23%. The 20 wt% Hc‐CMC blend films appeared as more suitable blending composition which having an enhanced physicochemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. This finding underscores its potential applicability in diverse industrial sectors, particularly in packaging applications.

Gamma Ray-Induced Changes in Polyvinyl Alcohol/Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Cadmium Selenide Nanocomposite Films: Optical Analysis for Optoelectronic Devices

In order to create nanocomposite films (NC) of polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose and cadmium selenide nanoparticles (PVA/CMC/CdSe), thermolysis and ex-situ casting techniques were used. The microstructure and shape of the CdSe nanoparticles (NP) were characterized with the Rietveld method and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Rietveld refinement of the x-ray data showed that the prepared CdSe NP had the cubic zinc blend structure with a lattice parameter 6.057 Å. The TEM showed the formation of the dotted shape of CdSe with a particle size around 2 nm, confirming the quantum dot size of the mother phase CdSe. Samples from the prepared PVA/CMC/CdSe films were irradiated with γ radiation doses of 20−150 kGy. The resultant effects of the γ ray irradiation on the optical and color properties of the prepared films were investigated using UV–vis spectroscopy and the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) color difference technique. When the γ dose was increased to 150 kGy, the maximum dose used, the direct and indirect optical band gaps (Eg) decreased. We attribute this decrease to the domination of crosslinking that destroyed the ordered structure and thus increased the amorphous regions. In addition, we used the optical dielectric loss (ε”) to identify the type of microelectronic transition for the PVA/CMC/CdSe NC samples, which was found to be a direct allowed transition. The effect of γ ray irradiation on the absorbance, extinction coefficient, refractive index, dielectric parameters and optical conductivity of the NC samples were studied. The enhancement in the optical properties indicated that the γ radiation is a useful tool that allows the use of the resulting PVA/CMC/CdSe NC in optoelectronic devices. Finally, the color differences between the pristine and irradiated films were estimated. The irradiated PVA/CMC/CdSe NC film exhibited significant color differences relative to the pristine films.

Free-standing carboxymethyl cellulose film incorporating nanoformulated pomegranate extract for meat packaging

This study aimed to explore an innovative approach to enhancing the shelf-life and quality of meat products through the application of an active packaging system. The study involved the development of new free-standing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) nanocomposite films incorporated with nanoencapsulated flavonoids derived from pomegranate extract. The loaded flavonoids, known for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, were nanoencapsulated via a self-assembly approach in a mixture of chitosan and sodium alginate to improve their stability, solubility, and controlled release characteristics. Chemical structure, size, and morphology of the obtained nanoparticles (Pg-NPs) were studied with FTIR, zeta-sizer, and TEM. The Pg-NPs showed particle size of 232 nm, and zeta-potential of −20.7 mV. Various free-standing nanocomposite films were then developed via incorporation of Pg-NPs into CMC-casted films. FTIR, SEM, thermal and mechanical properties, and surface wettability were intensively studied for the nanocomposite films. Barrier properties against water vapor were investigated at 2022 g·m−2d−1. The nanocomposite films possessed superior properties for inhibiting bacterial growth and extending the shelf-life of beef and poultry meat for 12 days compared with the Pg-NPs-free CMC films. This study presented a promising approach for development of active packaging systems with improved antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and economic and environmental impacts.

Smart colorimetric sensing films based on carboxymethyl cellulose incorporated with a natural pH indicator

This study aimed to combine various natural pH indicators of anthocyanin from Karanda (CA) with anthocyanin from butterfly pea flower (BA) or curcumin (CC) to improve the sensitivity of CA. CA75/BA25 and CA25/CC75 enhanced the sensitivity of the endpoint colour change of CA. A smart colorimetric sensing film was also developed and characterised by loading different natural pH indicators on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films. The addition of different natural pH indicators increased the thickness, elongation, colour (a* and b* values), and contact angle of CMC films (p < 0.05). However, the tensile strength, water vapour permeability, film solubility, light transmission, and L* value decreased when different natural pH indicators were added (p < 0.05). The indicator films demonstrated enhanced antioxidant capacity and thermal stability. The FTIR spectra showed that natural pH indicators were successfully immobilised into the CMC films. Notably, the CMC/CA75/BA25 film was the most sensitive film to changes in volatile ammonia and different pH buffer solutions. The CMC/CA75/BA25 film changed from purple to green with exposure to ammonia solution and from pink to purple to blue to green with increasing pH. Therefore, the CMC/CA75/BA25 film has potential as a colorimetric sensing film, providing a more accurate assessment result.

The physicochemical properties and molecular docking study of plasticized amphotericin B loaded sodium alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, and gelatin-based films

Plasticizers are employed to stabilize films by safeguarding their physical stability and avoiding the degradation of the loaded therapeutic drug during processing and storage. In the present study, the plasticizer effect (glycerol) was studied on bioadhesive films based on sodium alginate (SA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and gelatin (GE) polymers loaded with amphotericin B (AmB). The main objective of the current study was to assess the morphological, mechanical, thermal, optical, and barrier properties of the films as a function of glycerol (Gly) concentration (0.5–1.5 %) using different techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Texture analyzer (TA), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transforms Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The concentration increase of glycerol resulted in an increase in Water Vapor Permeability (WVP) (0.187–0.334), elongation at break (EAB) (0.88–35.48 %), thickness (0.032–0.065 mm) and moisture level (17.5–41.76 %) whereas opacity, tensile strength (TS) (16.81–0.86 MPa), and young's modulus (YM) (0.194–0.002 MPa) values decreased. Glycerol incorporation in the film-Forming solution decreased the brittleness and fragility of the films. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra showed that intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurred between glycerol and polymers in plasticized films compared to control films. Furthermore, molecular docking was applied to predict the binding interactions betweem AmB, CMC, gelatin, SA and glycerol, which further endorsed the stabilizing effects of glycerol in the complex formation between AmB, CMC, SA, and gelatin. The Findings of the current study demonstrated that this polymeric blend could be used to successfully prepare bioadhesive films with glycerol as a plasticizer.

Self-Powered, Highly Sensitive, and Flexible Humidity Sensor Based on Carboxymethyl Cellulose for Multifunctional Applications.

Self-powered humidity sensors based on friction electric and piezoelectric principles have been proposed in recent years. However, the complicated structure and preparation processes usually involved in these power generation humidity sensors limit their wider application. Herein, we developed a self-powered flexible humidity sensor with a simple structure and facile preparation process based on the primary battery principle. The self-powered humidity sensor consists of copper conductive tape as the positive electrode, nickel conductive tape as the negative electrode, and a carboxymethyl cellulose film dissolved with lithium chloride and sodium chloride as the sensing layer. The sensor exhibits good sensing linearity (R2 = 0.99791) in a wide relative humidity range (11-95%) with a satisfying response voltage of 41 mV (RH 95%) and excellent flexibility. Furthermore, the conduction mechanism of the sensing film was investigated by the complex impedance and phase angle-frequency spectral measurement and analysis. Multifunctional applications of human respiration monitoring to determine the respiratory rate and type, noncontact sensing, diaper and soil moisture detection, and power generation were demonstrated. The low-cost and facile preparation method in this work could provide a useful strategy for developing a self-powered, flexible, and multifunctional humidity sensor.

Biodegradable Packaging Based on Poly(vinyl Alcohol) and Carboxymethyl Cellulose Films Incorporated with Ascorbic Acid for Food Packaging Applications.

Petroleum-based plastics are used as packaging materials because of their low cost and high availability; however, continuous use of these nondegradable materials especially in the food industry has led to environmental pollution. The present study aimed to synthesize antibacterial and biodegradable films based on natural biopolymers carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and ascorbic acid (AA) cross-linked in the presence of glutaraldehyde (GA). The films were synthesized in two different concentrations, 60PVA:40CMC:AA and 70PVA:30CMC:AA with a fixed amount of AA. Films with smooth texture and overall uniform thickness were obtained. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the cross-linking between the aldehyde group of GA and hydroxyl of PVA through detection of acetal and ether bridges. The synthesized films were thermally stable in the temperature range of 180-300 °C; however, 70PVA:30CMC:AA showed higher weight loss in this range as compared to the 60PVA:40CMC:AA film. Soil burial test demonstrated that the 60PVA:40CMC:AA film was more degradable (71% at day 15) as compared to the 70PVA:30CMC:AA film (65% at day 15). The films exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive staphylococcus aureus(inhibition zone of 21 mm) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (inhibition zone of 15 mm). In comparison, the 60PVA:40CMC:AA film showed better results in terms of high mechanical strength, uniform morphology, higher soil burial degradation, and lower water vapor transmission rate. Therefore, the prepared film could be used as a promising candidate in the food packaging industry.

Development of a polymeric test kit based on the release of a selective chemosensor for the quantitative analysis of Cu(II) in aqueous samples

The development of a test kit for selective Cu(II) sensing in water samples was carried out. The kit system consisted in a polymeric film based in a carboxymethylcellulose hydrogel that contains silica coated chemosensor particles dispersed in its matrix. In this work, the film composition was optimized and its analytical evaluation by quantifying Cu(II) was compared against the free sensor. The characterization results showed that the chemosensor physically immobilized into silica particles can be uniformly dispersed in the carboxymethylcellulose film, with an excellent analytical performance to quantify Cu(II) in a range from 0.37 to 1.73 ppm. The detection limit of Cu(II) was 0.13 ppm. This method was successfully validated and the kit application to real water samples gave excellent results, suggesting that the film kit is simple, quick and effective to detect Cu(II) in this medium.

Investigating the characteristics of carboxymethyl cellulose film as a possible material for green packaging

The primary objective of the current work was to create a value-added biodegradable product for sustainable packaging. The primary goal of using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) made from agricultural waste is to lower the cost of making the film, because currently available commercial CMS is expensive. The main aim of the research is to convert the CMC obtained from agricultural waste into a usable biodegradable polymer that can be used as packaging material. Investigations were done into how well hemicellulose-based carboxymethyl cellulose (H-CMC) films performed. Oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) were used to extract hemicellulose using an alkali-ethanol extraction method. Following that, distilled water was added to the newly generated hemicellulose, and it was embedded with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) at various hemicellulose loadings (30, 50, 70, and 90 wt%). H- CMC films were made using the solution casting technique, and they ranged in thickness from 0.07 to 0.12 mm. The tensile test, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and SEM analysis were used to characterize the produced films. The hemicellulose content of H-CMC films has raised the glass transition temperature (Tg). The optimal loading of hemicellulose into CMC as a possible material for green packaging applications, according to the overall results, can be determined to be 70 percent weight. By integrating functional elements for upcoming applications including electrically conductive and photocatalytic thin films, the research further attempted to develop the film structure.

Modified lotus seed starch and red turnip peel extract based pH responsive edible films

Starch obtained from lotus seed was physically modified through heat-moisture treatment to develop the starch-based biopolymer films. Three different types of films: native lotus seed starch (NLS)- carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), heat moisture treated modified starch (HMLS)-CMC, and modified starch incorporated with red turnip peel extract (HMLS-RTE)-CMC films were developed. The different filmogenic solutions exhibited non-Newtonian behavior with the shear thinning property and showed weak gel-like and viscoelastic behavior. The three different films' tensile strength ranged from 14.97 ± 0.65–21.13 ± 0.41 MPa and elongation at break ranged from 32.87 ± 1.14–44.31 ± 0.82%. The water vapor permeability in NLS was 3.86 × 10−7 gm−1h−1Pa−1 and in HMLS-RTE film, the WVP was decreased to 2.58 × 10−7 gm−1h−1Pa−1. The findings revealed that the pH-sensitive HMLS-RTE film had higher thermal stability, improved mechanical and moisture barrier properties than the NLS films, making them suitable for the intelligent food packaging system.

Multifunctional soybean protein isolate-graft-carboxymethyl cellulose composite as all-biodegradable and mechanically robust mulch film for “green” agriculture

Multifunctional mulch films with robust mechanical behaviors of biopolymer-based biodegradable mulch materials were highly demanded in promoting the development of “green” agriculture. Herein, a sort of mechanically robust and all-biodegradable soybean protein isolate-graft‑sodium carboxymethyl cellulose composite mulch film was innovatively proposed through the amidation reactions between -COOH on protonated sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and -NH2 on soybean protein isolate. Arising from the reinforced intermolecular interactions upon chemical covalent bonds and physical hydrogen bonds, the maximum tensile strength and the elongation at break were increased from 10.61 MPa and 20.67 % for sodium carboxymethyl cellulose film to 42.15 MPa and 24.8 % for the optimized soybean protein isolate-graft‑sodium carboxymethyl cellulose composite mulch film, respectively. In addition, experimental results showed that the optimized soybean protein isolate-graft‑sodium carboxymethyl cellulose composite mulch film possesses soil moisture retention and controlled urea release properties. When employed as mulch film in practice, the cabbage seed presents higher germination when soil was covered with this versatile mulch film compared to commercial low-density polyethylene mulch film. Our discoveries build a prototype for the manufacture of eco-friendly mulch films with high mechanical strength, soil moisture retention, controlled urea release features.

Synthesis, optimization via response surface methodology, and structural properties of carboxymethylcellulose/curcumin/graphene oxide biocomposite films/coatings for the shelf-life extension of shrimp

In this study, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), curcumin (Cur), and graphene oxide (GO) were used to prepare a novel biocomposite film (CMC-Cur-GO). A central composite design under response surface methodology was employed to optimize the films in terms of water vapor permeability (WVP) and swelling percentage (SP). Under the optimum conditions, which the rates of CMC, GO and curcumin were found to be 1350 mg, 29.99 mg, and 0.302 g, respectively, WVP and SP of CMC-Cur-GO were obtained 0.902 × 10−8 (g/m·h·Pa) and 13.62 %, respectively. The biocomposite films (CMC, CMC-Cur, CMC-GO and CMC-Cur-GO) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscope, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, ultraviolet-vis light transmittance, moisture content, and mechanical properties. Compared with pure CMC film, the tensile strength, elongation at break and Young's modulus of CMC-Cur-GO were significantly improved by up to 75 %, 41 % and 23 %, respectively (p < 0.05). Then, CMC-Cur-GO was applied as a coating solution for the shrimps. The coated shrimps with the CMC-Cur-GO significantly (p < 0.05) showed a noteworthy improvement in microbial quality (total and psychrotrophic bacterial count), chemical deterioration and lipid oxidation (pH and total volatile basic nitrogen, peroxide value and thiobarbituric acid) and physical characteristic (weight loss) as compared to other samples. The CMC-Cur-GO coating could increase the shelf life of shrimp under refrigerated storage.
