Measurements of neutron capture cross-section for nuclides of interest in decommissioning (II): 58Fe(n,γ)59Fe

ABSTRACT As nuclear facilities are dismantled in decommissioning, large amounts of various waste are generated. Even more inconveniently, such waste is radioactive due to neutron activation. Thus, the neutron capture cross-sections of nuclides targeted in decommissioning are required to evaluate the radioactivity produced. In this work, 58Fe nuclide was selected among objective nuclides for decommissioning, and its thermal-neutron capture cross-section was measured by a neutron activation method at the graphite thermal column of Kyoto University Research Reactor in 5-MW operation. The thermal-neutron capture cross-section was derived using Westcott’s convention. The present work obtained 1.36 ± 0.03 barns for the58Fe(n,γ)59Fe reaction. The present result supports the JENDL-5 evaluation within 2σ. If updated with currently recommended nuclear data, some of the reported past data would support the present result.

ABSTRACT As nuclear facilities are dismantled in decommissioning, various and large amounts of waste are generated. Even more inconveniently, they are radioactive waste due to neutron activation. Thus, the neutron capture cross-sections of nuclides targeted for decommissioning are required to evaluate the radioactivity produced. The present study selected 45Sc, 63Cu, 64Zn, 109Ag and 113In among targeted nuclides, and performed the measurements of thermal-neutron capture cross-sections by an activation method at the Kyoto University Research Reactor. The thermal-neutron capture cross-sections were derived on the basis of Westcott’s convention. The present results were obtained as follows: 27.18 ± 0.28 barn for 45Sc(n,γ)46Sc, 4.34 ± 0.06 barn for 63Cu(n,γ)64Cu, 0.719 ± 0.011 barn for 64Zn(n,γ)65Zn, 4.05 ± 0.05 barn for 109Ag(n,γ)110mAg and 8.53 ± 0.27 barn for 113In(n,γ)114Inm1+m2 reactions. The results for 45Sc and 64Zn support evaluated cross-section data within the limits of uncertainties, while those for the other nuclides were slightly different from evaluated ones. The obtained results are useful not only for the evaluation of isotope production, but also for the consideration of those nuclides as flux monitors, as an alternative to Au and Co.

Measurement of the neutron capture cross section of 185Re in the keV energy region

ABSTRACT Despite various applications of Rhenium in nuclear science and engineering, there have been limited measurements of the neutron capture cross section of 185Re in the keV energy region, with existing data showing discrepancies. To address this, the study employed the time-of-flight method to measure the neutron capture cross section of 185Re. The prompt γ-rays from the neutron capture reactions were detected using a NaI(Tl) detector. The pulse-height weighting technique was employed to determine the neutron capture yield. The measured cross-section values were determined relative to the neutron capture cross section of 197Au in the energy range from 15 to 90 keV. Additionally, the obtained results were corrected for neutron transport effects and impurities. The results of the measurement provided improved accuracy compared to previous studies, contributing to the nuclear data for the capture cross section of 185Re in the keV energy range.

Experimental setup of the 239Pu neutron capture and fission cross-section measurements at n_TOF, CERN

The experimental setup of the new measurement of 239Pu fission and capture cross-section in the n_TOF time-of-flight facility at CERN is presented. The measurement aims to address the needs and demands of nuclear data users. The experiment incorporates an innovative fast Fission Fragment Detector and the n_TOF Total Absorption Calorimeter, enabling the implementation of the fission tagging technique. Preliminary results exhibit the robust performance of the detector systems, along with the high quality of the new 239Pu samples. These samples were exclusively produced for this measurement by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Geel.

Development and Baseline Comparison of a New Pulsed-Neutron Spectroscopy Tool for Carbon- Oxygen Analysis and Three-Phase Saturation Monitoring

A new slim multidetector pulsed-neutron wireline-logging tool has been developed for openhole or casedhole formation evaluation saturation analysis and time-lapse monitoring. With a greater neutron source output and high-spectral resolution gamma ray detectors, the tool can be operated with reduced uncertainty or faster logging speeds. New, fully programable digital electronics provide a range of acquisition modes optimized for specific formation evaluation objectives. Neutrons are generated from a high-output pulsed-neutron generator, which propagates radially outward, passing through the borehole, completion material, and into the formation. Energy is lost through scattering, and neutrons are absorbed by the surrounding material. Gamma rays are emitted from scattering and absorption interactions at discrete energies, which can be measured by one of three spectral gamma scintillation detectors. The energy distribution of these incident gamma rays by inelastic and capture interactions is affected by the elemental composition of the material. A salinity-independent oil-water saturation assessment begins with the deconvolution of neutron-induced gamma ray inelastic spectra into constituent elemental components. Carbon-oxygen ratios (C/O) of elemental yields are then compared to a reference model to determine the relative saturation and porosity-filled volume of oil and water. In PNC (pulsed-neutron capture) acquisition mode, a salinity-dependent oil-water saturation assessment is determined from neutron capture cross section (sigma) measurements, which are compared to formation and porosity fluids using a mass balance approach. Gas saturation assessment is determined from gas-sensitive inelastic (RIN13) and capture (RATO13) ratios. Gas ratios are compared to a reference model to assess the relative saturation of fluids, typically distinguishing gas from water or gas from oil. Gas saturation is not limited to hydrocarbon components and can also be used for saturation analysis of H2, He, CO2, N2, and other non-hydrocarbon-bearing components. A new Omni-mode acquisition combining simultaneous PNC and C/O measurements was also developed. This acquisition mode provides advantages in reducing multipass logging typically required from separate PNC and C/O acquisitions. By including PNC neutron capture sigma, gas-sensitive neutron capture and inelastic measurements, and C/O inelastic measurements, the simultaneous Omni-mode (PNC+C/O) acquisition is specifically optimized for three-phase saturation analysis applications, including baseline CO2 sequestration evaluation for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) CO2 and steamflood time-lapse monitoring. Results from a field example are presented to demonstrate the new technology with spectral C/O saturation analysis compared to traditional windows C/O analysis and to compare the performance of the next-generation tool to the legacy tool. Multiphase saturations from C/O and RIN13 measurements and compatibility with legacy interpretations for time-lapse saturation monitoring are also presented.

Characterization study of NaI(Tl) γ-summing spectrometer

The accurate information regarding the β-decay half-life, feeding pattern from the neutron-rich nuclei have utmost importance in the field of nuclear waste management from the fission reactors as well as correct understanding about the r-process nucleosynthesis in stellar sites. The low capture cross-section measurements are also considered as major task by experimental nuclear astrophysicists. These kinds of measurements are really difficult with conventional high-resolution gamma spectroscopy techniques due to less efficiency of the detectors. For this purpose, we have an almost 4π γ-summing NaI(Tl) spectrometer at SINP, Kolkata. It is basically a cylindrical shaped detector with six sectors of NaI(Tl) crystals read by 6 photomultiplier tubes (PMT) at one end. The detailed characterization of the spectrometer via experiment using laboratory standard sources and GEANT4 simulation model to interpret all the interesting properties will be presented here in this paper.

Thermal neutron capture cross-section and resonance integral measurements of 186W(n,γ)187W reaction using the thermal column neutron source at the Dalat research reactor

The thermal neutron radiative capture cross-section (σ0) and the resonance integral (I0) of the reaction 186W(n,γ)187W were measured by the thin foil activation method using the well thermalized neutron source at the graphite thermal column facility of the Dalat research reactor. The activities of the irradiated target and monitor samples were measured using a high resolution HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer. The recent updated values of gamma-rays intensities and decay half-life of the 187W nucleus were applied in this experiment to substantially improve the cross-section results compared to the previous measurements. The thermal neutron capture cross- section and the resonance integral of the 186W(n,γ)187W reaction were determined relative to the standard reaction 197Au(n,γ)198Au. The values obtained are 31.76 ± 0.63 and 429.2 ± 25.6 barns for σ0 and I0 respectively. Our results and previous measured values are compared, and discrepancies are discussed.

Measuring neutron capture cross sections of radioactive nuclei

Measuring neutron capture cross sections of radioactive nuclei is a crucial step towards a better understanding of the origin of the elements heavier than iron. For decades, the precise measurement of direct neutron capture cross sections in the “stellar” energy range (eV up to a few MeV) was limited to stable and longer-lived nuclei that could be provided as physical samples and then irradiated with neutrons. New experimental methods are now being developed to extend these direct measurements towards shorter-lived radioactive nuclei (t_{1/2}< 1 y). One project in this direction is a low-energy heavy-ion storage ring coupled to the ISAC facility at TRIUMF, Canada’s accelerator laboratory in Vancouver BC, which has a compact neutron source in the ring matrix. Such a pioneering facility could be built within the next 10 years and store a wide range of radioactive ions provided directly from the existing ISOL facility, allowing for the first time to carry out direct neutron capture measurements on short-lived isotopes in inverse kinematics.

Measurement of neutron capture cross section on 71Ga at 2.15 and 3.19 MeV and uncertainty propagation and covariance analysis* *Under the financial assistance of the B.R.N.S., DAE, Mumbai (Sanction No. 2012/36/17-BRNS Dated 14.08.2012), this research was carried out as part of a collaborative research project between the Department of Physics, Mizoram University and BARC, Mumbai. One of the authors (R.P.)

The cross section values of the Ga()Ga reaction are measured, which are mb and mb at 2.15 and 3.19 MeV, respectively. The detailed uncertainty propagation and covariance analysis are also given. The Li()Be reaction was used to generate the neutrons, and the neutron flux was normalized using the In()Inmonitor reaction. The measured cross section data are compared with the data available in the EXFOR database, the data obtained using nuclear reaction model codes EMPIRE-3.2 and TALYS-1.95, and also the evaluated nuclear data from ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.1/A. The comparison shows that our result at 3.19 MeV is in good agreement with those of EMPIRE-3.2 and JEFF-3.1/A. Since there are no other measurements available at 3.19 MeV, our data could not be compared with literature data at 3.19 MeV, but they are consistent with the cross section values available at and MeV. Our result at 2.15 MeV is slightly higher than the literature value available in EXFOR, evaluated value, and theoretically predicted result.

Measurements of capture cross-section of 93Nb by activation method and half-life of 94Nb by mass analysis

ABSTRACT The thermal-neutron capture cross section (σ 0 ) and resonance integral (I 0 ) for93Nb were measured by an activation method; a half-life of 94Nb was derived by mass analysis. Niobium-93 samples were irradiated with the use of the hydraulic conveyer installed in the research reactor in Institute for Integral Radiation and Nuclear Science, Kyoto University. Gold-aluminum and cobalt-aluminum alloy wires were used to monitor thermal-neutron fluxes and Westcott’s indexes at the irradiation position. A 25-μm-thick gadolinium foil was used to separate reactions ascribed to thermal neutrons. Its thickness provided a cut-off energy of 0.133 eV. In order to attenuate the radioactivity of 182Ta produced by impurities, the Nb samples were cooled for nearly 2 years. The induced radio activity in the monitors and Nb samples was measured by gamma-ray spectroscopy. In the analysis based on Westcott’s convention, the σ 0 and I 0 values were calculated as 1.11 ± 0.04 barns and 10.5 ± 0.6 barns, respectively. After the γ-ray measurements, mass analysis was applied to the Nb samples to obtain the reaction rate. By combining data obtained by both γ-ray spectroscopy and mass analysis, a half-life of 94Nb was determined as (2.00 ± 0.15) ×104 years.

Neutron capture cross-section measurement by mass spectrometry for Pb-204 irradiated in JRR-3

ABSTRACT Reliable neutron capture cross sections of lead isotopes are necessary for the development of lead or lead-bismuth cooled fast reactors. Although 204Pb has the smallest natural abundance in stable Pb isotopes, its neutron capture cross-section data are important because a long-lived radionuclide 205Pb (T1/2 = 17.3 million years) is produced by a neutron capture reaction on 204Pb. This study applied a mass spectrometry method to measure the neutron capture cross section of 204Pb. An enriched 204Pb sample was irradiated for 24 days with a neutron flux on the order of 1013 n/cm2/sec at the Japan Research Reactor-3. The irradiated 204Pb sample was analyzed by thermal ionization mass spectrometry to obtain the isotopic ratio between 205Pb and 204Pb. Consequently, the thermal-neutron capture cross-section of 204Pb was found to be 0.536 ± 0.030 barns.

Results of the 244Cm, 246Cm and 248Cm neutron-induced capture cross sections measurements at EAR1 and EAR2 of the n_TOF facility

Accurate neutron capture cross section data for minor actinides (MAs) are required to estimate the production and transmutation rates of MAs in light water reactors, critical fast reactors like Gen-IV systems, and other innovative reactor systems such as accelerator driven systems (ADS). In particular, 244Cm, 246Cm and 248Cm play a role in the transport, storage and transmutation of the nuclear waste of the current nuclear reactors, due to the contribution of these isotopes to the radiotoxicity, neutron emission, and decay heat in the spent nuclear fuel. Also, capture reactions in these Cm isotopes open the path for the formation of heavier elements. In this work, the results of the capture cross section measurement on 244Cm, 246Cm and 248Cm performed at the CERN n_TOF facility are presented. It is important to notice that the Cm samples used in the experiment at n_TOF have been used previously in an experiment at J-PARC, this experiment and the previous one done in the 70s with a nuclear explosion were the only previous capture experiments for these isotopes. At n_TOF, the capture cross section measurements of 244Cm, 246Cm and 248Cm were performed at the 20 m vertical flight path (EAR2) with three C6D6 total energy detectors. In addition, the cross section of 244Cm was measured at the 185 m flight path (EAR1) with a Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC). The combination of measurements in EAR1 and EAR2 has contributed to controlling and reducing the systematic uncertainties in the results. The compatibility of the different measurements performed and the techniques to obtain the results are presented in this paper as well as the procedure to obtain the resonance parameters.

Neutron capture and total cross-section measurements on 94,95,96Mo at n_TOF and GELINA

Capture and total cross section measurements for 94,95,96Mo have been performed at the neutron time-of-flight facilities, n_TOF at CERN and GELINA at JRC-Geel. The measurements were performed using isotopically enriched samples with an enrichment above 95% for each of the 94,95,96Mo isotopes. The capture measurements were performed at n_TOF using C6D6 detectors and a new sTED detector. The transmission measurements were performed at a 10 m station of GELINA using a 6Li glass neutron detector. Preliminary results of these measurements are presented.

A segmented total energy detector (sTED) for (n, γ) cross section measurements at n_TOF EAR2

The neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF is characterised by its high instantaneous neutron intensity, high-resolution and broad neutron energy spectra, specially conceived for neutron-induced reaction cross section measurements. Two Time-Of-Flight (TOF) experimental areas are available at the facility: experimental area 1 (EAR1), located at the end of the 185 m horizontal flight path from the spallation target, and experimental area 2 (EAR2), placed at 20 m from the target in the vertical direction. The neutron fluence in EAR2 is ˜ 300 times more intense than in EAR1 in the relevant time-of-flight window. EAR2 was designed to carry out challenging cross-section measurements with low mass samples (approximately 1 mg), reactions with small cross-sections or/and highly radioactive samples. The high instantaneous fluence of EAR2 results in high counting rates that challenge the existing capture systems. Therefore, the sTED detector has been designed to mitigate these effects. In 2021, a dedicated campaign was done validating the performance of the detector up to at least 300 keV neutron energy. After this campaign, the detector has been used to perform various capture cross section measurements at n_TOF EAR2.

Templates of expected measurement uncertainties for neutron-induced capture and charged-particle production cross section observables

This paper provides a template of expected uncertainties and correlations for measurements of neutron-induced capture and charged-particle production cross sections. Measurements performed in-beam include total absorption spectroscopy, total energy detection,γ-ray spectroscopy, and direct charged-particle detection. Offline measurements include activation analysis and accelerator mass spectrometry. The information needed for proper use of the datasets in resonance region and high energy region evaluations is described, and recommended uncertainties are provided when specific values are not available for a dataset.

Neutron Capture and Transmission Measurements of 54Fe at the RPI LINAC

54Fe radiative capture cross section and transmission measurements were conducted at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Gaerttner Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Center using an enriched 54Fe sample in the keV energy region. 54Fe is a constituent of natural iron, which is present in a large variety of nuclear grade materials. Therefore, it is important to have an accurate understanding of the cross sections of 54Fe, which can be measured experimentally. In the time-of-flight measurements conducted at the LINAC, an array of four C6D6 detectors surrounded the sample and radiative capture data were collected using a digital data acquisition system. Additionally, a Li-glass detector was used to collect transmission data using an analog data acquisition system. The radiative capture yield of the 54Fe measurements were normalized to saturated resonances observed in Au and Ta to obtain an absolute capture yield. The preliminary capture yield and preliminary transmission obtained can be compared to evaluations and existing experimental data. Some disagreements were observed in prominent d-wave capture resonances observed in 54Fe in the low-keV neutron energy region. Both sets of experimental data along with pre-existing datasets will greatly enhance RPI’s ability to perform resonance evaluation for 54Fe up to roughly 1 MeV.

Uncertainty estimation in neutron TOF measurements with ANNRI

To improve data accuracy of neutron-capture and total cross sections of minor actinides and long-lived fission products, the time-of-flight experimental instrument named ”Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument” was constructed, and neutron time-of-flight experiments have been performed with an intense pulsed-neutron beam at MLF in J-PARC. Detailed analysis methods and deduced uncertainties for capture and total cross-section measurements are presented using an example of the experiments of 243Am. The deduced uncertainties are categorized into five types.

233U(n,γ) measurements at LANSCE

Uranium-233 plays an important role in the Th-U fuel cycle, which has been proposed as an alternative to the U-Pu fuel cycle due to its reduced amount of transuranium elements. The available experimental 233U(n,γ) cross section data in the literature are scarce, [1–3]. In 2008, the 233U(n,γ) cross section was investigated at LANL using the DANCE detector combined with a PPAC, however the statistics in the keV regime were inadequate for a reliable extraction of the cross section at 100 keV. An accurate measurement of the 233U(n,γ) cross section is required by the NCSP to complete the neutron-induced cross section data; a new evaluation reported the need of 233U capture data. The challenge in this measurement lies in the difficulty of measuring capture cross section data due to the competing capture and fission channels. Fission reactions are around one order of magnitude more likely than capture for 233U. The accuracy in the capture cross section measurement relies on the discrimination between the γ-rays produced in capture and fission reactions, for which an experimental setup combining capture and fission detectors is needed. Following this requirement, a new measurement has been performed at LANSCE combining the γ-ray array DANCE with the neutron detector NEUANCE to identify fission and neutron-capture events. This measurement will provide results of the 233U capture-to-fission ratio in the Resolved and Unresolved Resonance regions.
