Locus, Sanctus, et Virtus: Monastic Surnaming in Late Medieval and Early Tudor England Reviewed

This article examines the apparent practice among monks and regular canons in England before the Dissolution of dropping their family surnames on admission/profession, and adopting instead a new ‘monastic byname’, derived from a place name (toponym) or, by the late fifteenth century onwards, from a saint’s name (hagionym) or a virtue. The article begins by reviewing evidence that this onomastic practice existed and determining how widespread it was. The nature and distribution of the toponymic, hagionymic, and virtue bynames are then examined in turn. The article concludes by considering the underlying reason for the adoption of monastic bynames and argues that this practice served as a means of reflecting symbolically the new monk’s or canon’s separation from lay society, and from his family in particular, and his incorporation into the monastic community.

LINCOLN CATHEDRAL TREASURE HOUSE

An unpublished document in the archives of Lincoln Cathedral reveals the function of the thirteenth-century annex attached to the south-east transept, naming it as the cathedral’s thesaurarium (‘treasury’). This paper explores the fittings and the functions of the various chambers of the thesaurarium of Lincoln Cathedral, including its splendid crypt. In addition, the paper will examine the extent to which the thesaurarium conforms to the type of ecclesiastical treasure house favoured by secular canons in England and abroad. The building’s design and architectural language testify to the decorum and respect accorded to church treasures and the importance attached to the task of providing them with accommodation worthy of their status.

Education and the Recruitment of Cathedral Canons in England and Germany 1100-1225

"Education and the Recruitment of Cathedral Canons in England and Germany 1100-1225." In deciding whether social mobility was possible for medieval clergy an important point to note is the use of educational qualifications. In the twelfth century in much of western Europe the number of men holding the title magister increased enormously as the title began to be given to men who had completed a course of study at a studium generale, but this trend started only after about 1200 in Germany. A comparison of the way in which the higher clergy (especially cathedral canons) were educated in England and Germany can help to illuminate significant differences in the two societies. The oblate system survived much later in Germany than further west in Europe and German cathedral canons thus were recruited as boys, were educated at the cathedral school, and were automatically accepted fully into the community at adulthood. Cathedral schools were too small to offer the sort of higher education available at Paris, and German canons felt no need to go abroad to study. In England bishops controlled the appointment of canons; they recruited adults, preferring magistri where possible. English clerics thus had a powerful motive to go to Paris to acquire qualifications and improve their chances of promotion.
