Usability Insights from the BUMPER Cancer Prevention App Pilot Study: A Mixed-Methods Approach

Abstract Introduction As the second leading cause of death in the EU, cancer is expected to see a 55% rise in new cases globally over the next two decades. The European Code Against Cancer (ECAC) and the EU’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP) provide resources for understanding and preventing cancer. The BUMPER project aims to develop a cancer prevention App to make the ECAC more accessible to the public. Objectives Understand the factors influencing the use of a cancer prevention app among users with different digital health literacy levels and to evaluate the app’s usability. Methods Mixed-methods approach was used to gather user feedback. FGDs explored user perspectives on app usage, while a cross-sectional survey assessed usability through task completion on an initial app wireframe. The pilot was conducted across seven EU countries in late 2023. Results 77 participants participated in the pilots and FGDs across seven EU countries. The average task completion time was approximately 79 seconds. Participants rated their confidence to complete the tasks at 3.96 and difficulty at 2.28 on a scale of 1 to 5. The average task pass rate was 92.11%. Qualitative findings highlighted the need for evidence-based content, user-friendly design, language accessibility, offline functionality, and data security. Participants also stressed the importance of clear instructions, regular updates, and robust tracking features. Despite some challenges, the app was generally well-received, with users appreciating its educational potential and tracking capabilities. Conclusions The BUMPER project’s pilot study demonstrated the cancer prevention App being developed as a potential tool for cancer education and awareness. Despite navigational and language challenges, the app was favorably received by a diverse user base, underscoring the need for ongoing improvements in user guidance, comprehension, and functionality to enhance accessibility. “I Pink I Can” Breast Cancer Intervention Program: Its Effectiveness in Raising Knowledge among Junior High School Students of San Pablo City Integrated High School

As incidence rates rise from one in ten women to one in eight by 2023, breast cancer continues to be a serious worldwide health concern. Regardless of its rarity in men, this study included men in addition to women who frequently get breast cancer. Both sexes are affected by breast cancer, and its effects frequently get worse when discovered in advanced stages. This study highlights the importance of breast cancer education for people of all genders, in order to improve early detection and treatment outcomes. It aims to support the Sustainable Development Goal of "Good Health and Well-Being" by increasing Junior High Students' knowledge about breast cancer through an intervention program. Using a quasi- experimental design, 156 students' knowledge was assessed via a pre-test and post-test after exposure to leaflets, posters, and health teaching. A rigorously tested questionnaire focused on: breast cancer, signs and symptoms, risk factors, risk populations, and breast cancer screening showed that while students had basic knowledge initially, misconceptions were common. Post-intervention results demonstrated a significant increase in correct responses, indicating that the program effectively improved knowledge and corrected misconceptions. This underscores the value of targeted health education in promoting breast health and encouraging preventive measures.

Assessment of YouTube Videos Related to Radioactive Iodine Therapy for Thyroid Cancer for Patient Education.

Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis among those aged 15-29, with a noticeable increase in cases over the last decade. YouTube, one of the most frequented websites on the internet, serves as a common platform to obtain health information. This study uses a systematic approach to characterize YouTube videos related to radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy for thyroid cancer. The first 50 videos across four distinct YouTube search terms related to RAI therapy for thyroid cancer were identified after applying exclusion criteria. A previously validated video assessment tool was utilized to evaluate the videos. Two independent reviewers assessed a random sample of 10 videos, while the remaining 40 videos were evaluated by one reviewer as there were minimal discrepancies in coding. Among the identified videos, 26 videos were published within the past 3years, with a median video length of 4min and 53s. The three most common publishers' affiliations were non-profits (15 videos), personal accounts (12 videos), and health care facilities/organizations (11 videos). Most of the videos originated in the United States, used an interview format, featured physician presenters, and were directed towards patients. Highly covered topics included "side effects and risks" and "RAI therapy overview". The findings underscore the significant role YouTube plays in aiding patient comprehension of RAI therapy for thyroid cancer based on video parameters and content. These results can inform physicians' discussions with patients regarding YouTube and contribute to the development of new, high-quality YouTube videos to support thyroid cancer education.

Health-related quality of life and supportive care needs in young adult cancer survivors-a longitudinal population-based study.

To examine health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and supportive care needs among young adult (YA) cancer survivors up to 3years post-diagnosis. A national cohort of individuals diagnosed at 18-39years with breast, cervical, ovarian, or testicular cancer, lymphoma or brain tumor was approached with surveys at 1.5 (n = 1010, response rate 67%) and 3 (n = 722) years post-diagnosis. HRQoL was measured using the EORTC QLQ-C30. Scores were dichotomized using cut-off scores to predict supportive care needs in the Supportive Care Needs Survey-Long Form 59 (SCNS-LF59). Swedish cancer quality registers provided clinical data. Factors predicting need of support at 1.5 and 3years post-diagnosis were identified using logistic regression. HRQoL improvements over time were trivial to small. At both time points, a majority of respondents rated HRQoL levels indicating supportive care needs. At 1.5years post-diagnosis, the risk of having support needs was lower among survivors with testicular cancer (compared to lymphoma) or university-level education, and higher among those on treatment (predominantly endocrine therapy). At 3years post-diagnosis, when controlling for previous HRQoL scores, most correlations persisted, and poor self-rated household economy and chronic health conditions were additionally associated with supportive care needs. A majority of YAs diagnosed with cancer rate HRQoL at levels indicating support needs up to 3years post-diagnosis. Testicular cancer survivors are at lower risk of having support needs. Concurrent health conditions and poor finances are linked to lower HRQoL. More efforts are needed to provide adequate, age-appropriate support to YA cancer survivors.

Young Black Women's Breast Cancer Knowledge and Beliefs: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed MethodsStudy.

Black women under the age of 50 have a 111% higher breast cancer mortality rate than their White counterparts. The breast cancer mortality disparities among young Black women may be due in part to the fact that they are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage, invasive breast cancer tumors. Psychosocial factors, such as lack of perceived risk for breast cancer, lack of awareness of breast cancer risk factors, and ambiguity about breast cancer screening guidelines are areas that are under investigated among young Black women. The purpose of this study was to identify young Black women's cancer beliefs and level of breast cancer risk knowledge. A sequential explanatory mixed methods study was conducted using quantitative data from the Health Information Trends Survey 6 (HINTS 6) (n = 25) and qualitative data from interviews with young Black female college students (n = 13). The results of the quantitative data analysis were used to guide the development of the qualitative interview guide. Data regarding participants' cancer beliefs, cancer risk factor knowledge, perceived cancer risk, and ambiguity about cancer screening behaviors were analyzed. The findings indicated young Black women have low perceived risk of developing cancer. Most participants were not aware of cancer recommendations that were targeted towards women under the age of 40. In addition, knowledge about lifestyle behavior risk factors for breast cancer was relatively low. Our findings underscore the importance of developing, disseminating, and implementing breast cancer education interventions that are targeted towards young Black women.

A student-community partnership to enhance cancer research training

BackgroundDespite the importance of community involvement in research, little formal training in community outreach and engagement (COE) is offered to cancer research trainees. A collaboration between the Office of COE and the Office of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Jefferson led to the COE-CRTEC Trainee Working Group, a unique program in which trainees in cancer research each created a novel COE initiative.MethodsFour cancer research trainees were selected to serve as COE Program Liaisons (CPLs), each aligned with one of the four cancer center research programs. Each CPL developed, implemented, and evaluated a project that enhanced the bidirectional relationship between their research and the community. Trainees were provided a modest budget, support from the Office of COE, and a requirement to complete the project within one academic year.ResultsProjects included a cancer education seminar for older adults at a senior center, a prostate cancer education and screening event at a predominantly African American church, a video demonstrating a day in the life of a skin cancer researcher, and a podcast that featured SKCCC investigators answering research questions from community members.ConclusionStudents who would not typically be exposed to COE training gained experience developing, implementing, and evaluating community-based initiatives. Projects were diverse in topic and approach, reflecting the diversity of the trainees and the community. Allowing trainees, those who are the next generation of cancer researchers, to design community-based research may lead to more patient-centered research in the future.

The Effect of Cervical Cancer and Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Education on Vaccination Perception in University Students: A Quasi-Experimental Controlled Educational Intervention.

Purpose: The study investigated the impact of cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine education on university students' vaccination perceptions. Methods: This research was conducted with pre- posttest and quasi-experimental design with students enrolled in the department of health services of a university. The sample of the study consisted of 87 students (n = 43 in the intervention group, n = 44 in the control group). Research data were collected between June 29 and July 22, 2022, using the Introductory Information Form and HPV Information Scale. An informative training program about cervical cancer and HPV was applied to the intervention group. This training program was carried out in two separate sessions. In the first session, information was given about the prevalence, pathology, and risk factors of cervical cancer. In the second session, general information about HPV, details about the vaccine, and vaccination programs were given. Training sessions are organized as small group discussions and seminars covering relevant topics. Results: In our study, the average age of our students was 20.7 ± 2.5 years, and in both groups, the proportion of students who did not know about HPV, which can cause cervical cancer, was quite high (74.4%, 68.2%). The majority of the control and intervention groups needed health education about STDs. There were statistically significant differences between the control and intervention groups in terms of the pre-test and posttest Knowledge of HPV Scale scores (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It was found that the education on cervical cancer and HPV positively affected the perspectives of the students on vaccination. Interactive and group-oriented education increases knowledge sharing by encouraging interaction among students. In this way, a broader knowledge base about cervical cancer and HPV can be created, and misinformation can be corrected.

The Effect of Cervical Cancer Education Given to Women in Turkey on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Health Beliefs: A Randomized Controlled Study.

The objective of this study was to ascertain the impact of cervical cancer education provided to women in Turkey on their knowledge, attitudes, and health beliefs. The study was conducted in accordance with the pretest-posttest randomized controlled trial model. The participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental or the control groups. The study was completed with a total of 105 women, 51 of whom were in the experimental group and 54 of whom were in the control group. The personal information form, the human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge scale, and the health belief model scale for cervical cancer and Pap smear test were employed as data collection instruments. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 package program, and the number, percentage, independent samples t-test, and paired t-test were utilized for data analysis. Upon completion of the training program, the mean scores of the experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant increase in knowledge related to general HPV information, HPV screening tests, general HPV vaccines, and HPV vaccine programs when compared to the control group (p<0.001). Upon conclusion of the educational intervention, it was determined that the mean scores of cervical cancer sensitivity, caring, health motivation, Pap smear utility, and motivation of women in the experimental group exhibited an increase, while their general perception of Pap smear demonstrated a decrease (p<0.05). The findings of this study indicate that educational initiatives targeting women regarding cervical cancer have a beneficial impact on their knowledge, attitudes, and health beliefs. The Moderating Role of Genetics on the Effectiveness of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Breast Cancer (MBSR(BC)) Program on Cognitive Impairment.

Genetics may influence symptoms experienced by breast cancer survivors (BCS) by moderating the effects of stress-reducing interventions, including the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR(BC)) program, to reduce symptom severity. As part of a larger clinical trial, the aim of this study was to evaluate genetic variants as moderators of MBSR(BC) on improvements among BCS in cognitive functioning and symptoms. BCS (n = 128) were randomized to MBSR(BC) or the Breast Cancer Education Support Program. Objective neuropsychological and subjective measures of cognitive performance, and psychological and physical symptoms were collected at baseline, 6, 12, and 26 weeks. Linear mixed models were implemented to identify MBSR(BC)'s effects over time. A total of 22 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 20 genes known to be related to these symptoms were investigated using genomic DNA. These SNPs were tested as moderators of MBSR(BC) program effects. Results showed MBSR(BC) participants experienced significantly greater benefits in cognitive functioning, however, the level of benefit varied based on one's genetic profile. Effects sizes, consistency across similar measures were investigated. Among 22 candidate SNPs, rs4680 in COMT, rs1800497 in ANKK1, and rs6277 in DRD2 demonstrated the strongest, most consistent positive effects in moderating MBSR(BC)'s impact on cognitive outcomes. Although the effects were small, this translational research may potentially identify BCS with genotypes that would be most influenced by the MBSR(BC) program. These results may be used to develop personalized intervention programs tailored to the genetic profile of each breast cancer survivor who received chemotherapy or chemotherapy and radiation. Validation study of risk-reduction activities after personalized breast cancer education tool in the WISDOM study

Breast cancer risk reduction strategies have been well-validated, but barriers remain for high-risk individuals to adopt them. We performed a study among participants with high risk of breast cancer to validate whether a virtual breast health decision tool impacted a participant’s willingness to start risk-reducing activities, identify barriers to adopting these strategies, and understand if it affects breast cancer anxiety. The study sample was 318 participants in the personalized (investigational) arm of the Women Informed to Screen Depending on Measures of risk (WISDOM) clinical trial. After reviewing the tool, these participants completed a feedback survey. We demonstrated that 15 (4.7%) women were taking endocrine risk reduction, 123 (38.7%) were reducing alcohol intake, and 199 (62.6%) were exercising. In the three-month follow-up survey of 109 respondents, only 8 of 61 (13.1%) women who considered endocrine risk reduction pursued it. In contrast, 11 of 16 (68%) participants who considered alcohol reduction pursued the activity, and 14 of 24 (58%) women who considered exercise followed through. Participants listed fear of side effects as the most common barrier to endocrine risk reduction. We also present further steps to be taken to improve the effectiveness of the Breast Health Decisions tool.

Impacts of Employment Status, Partnership, Cancer Type, and Surgical Treatment on Health-Related Quality of Life in Irradiated Head and Neck Cancer Survivors

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and sociodemographic and clinical variables in survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC) treated with radiotherapy, with or without surgery. Materials and Methods: HRQoL was measured using the functional assessment of cancer therapy—head and neck (FACT-H&amp;N) in a cross-sectional survey involving 150 patients. Of these, 60 had nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC), treated exclusively with radiotherapy, while 90 had oral cavity squamous cell cancer (OSCC), undergoing radical surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy. Key variables included cancer type, age, gender, partnership status, education, and employment, with additional clinical variables assessed in patients with OSCC. Statistical analyses included multiple regression, ANOVA, and t-tests to explore relationships between variables and HRQoL. Results: Cancer type, surgical treatment, and employment status emerged as significant independent predictors of HRQoL in HNC patients. Patients with NPC reported better HRQoL on three FACT-H&amp;N subscales—social/family well-being, functional well-being, and additional concerns—compared to patients with OSCC. Unemployed individuals exhibited lower HRQoL on four subscales. In patients with OSCC, partnership status and segmental mandibulectomy were found to predict HRQoL independently. Conclusions: This study concludes that cancer type, surgical intervention, and employment status notably influence HRQoL among HNC patients undergoing radiotherapy. In addition, partnership status is a key factor affecting HRQoL in patients with OSCC.

Leveraging a geographic information system (GIS) to identify lung cancer care disparities and opportunities in rural Appalachia.

78 Background: The Rural Appalachian Lung Cancer Screening Initiative is led by the Association of Cancer Care Centers (ACCC) and patient advocacy partners. Recognized by the White House Cancer Moonshot, this initiative seeks to improve lung cancer screening rates by partnering with health systems in rural Appalachia to develop and implement interventions. An 11-county region bordering West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky has significantly higher mortality and lung cancer incidence rates than the national rates of 35.0 and 54.0 per 100,000 people, respectively (Table 1). This region was identified as the focus area for the initiative with participation from health systems in Pike County, KY, and Buchanan County, VA. Methods: To understand availability of local resources, ACCC developed an interactive GIS tool that identifies screening and referral locations as well as essential services in the region. Lung cancer screening sites, oncology services, mammography locations, critical access hospitals, NCI-designated cancer centers, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) and look-alikes, rural health clinics, and primary care/general health services were identified from publicly available data and data requested from state departments of health. Facilities were contacted to verify services when unclear. STATA 18 was used to combine and clean data for upload to Google MyMaps, creating an interactive map. Results: Of the 11 counties, all contain at least 1 FQHC or primary care site. However, 5 of the counties do not have lung cancer screening sites and 7 of the counties do not have oncology service sites (Table). The closest NCI-designated cancer centers to the participating sites are over 140 miles away. Conclusions: While there is a notable presence of primary care, access to lung cancer screening and oncology care is limited. Sites can utilize this map to inform development of interventions by considering potential geographical challenges, identifying referral sites, outreach opportunities, and partners to facilitate lung cancer screening and education. Empowering minoritized Alabamians screened for lung cancer-The Alabama Lung Cancer Awareness Screening and Education (ALCASE) project.

In Alabama only 4% of those eligible have been screened for lung cancer. The ALCASE project focused on navigating eligible individuals to lung cancer screening. Trained local staff enrolled screen eligible individuals from seven rural counties and one urban county. Demographics and knowledge of and barriers to lung cancer screening were collected using questionnaires. Education was provided and individuals were navigated to undergo screening. Descriptive statistics for enrolled and screened participants were computed using SAS 9.4. Debriefing interviews were conducted with the ALCASE staff regarding facilitators/barriers to implementing this project and lessons learned. Using NVivo, themes were identified through a combined deductive and inductive process. In total, 447 people were contacted of which 257 were enrolled. Participants were predominantly African American (86.8%), female (56.8%), and 86.4% had health insurance. Study participants acknowledged the need for more education of lung cancer/screening procedures; help navigating clinics for screening services and having healthcare facilities close to home. The top five barriers to getting screened were transportation, financial issues, emotional concerns, healthcare insurance, and COVID-19. Of the 257, 106 participants (41%) completed a primary care referral and were screened for lung cancer. Debriefing interviews revealed: (i) Overall impressions of implementing ALCASE were positive. (ii) Barriers in implementing ALCASE were identified predominantly at the physician and institutional level. (iii) Facilitators in implementing ALCASE were identified at multiple levels. (iv) Suggestions on improving lung cancer screening leaned toward mitigating barriers at the institutional and structural level. Ability to get screened is severely challenged by both personal and structural barriers.

Creating an effective curriculum for cosmetology students to promote early detection of melanoma in salons and barber shops: a scoping review

This scoping review aims to summarize available research literature on previous skin cancer educational programs among hair professionals or cosmetology students to inform the creation of an effective cosmetology school curriculum that will promote early detection of melanoma on the scalp and neck. Cutaneous melanoma on the scalp and neck is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, and the number of new cases continues to rise. Hair professionals can detect this cancer by regularly inspecting the skin under these hair-bearing areas. Providing skin cancer education to cosmetology students can potentially affect significant changes in screening and referral practices, improving the stage at which this cancer is treated. All articles in this study involved hair professionals or cosmetology students in the context of hair salons, barbershops, or cosmetology schools. These articles included a focus on skin cancer or melanoma education. A systematic search of electronic databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, Science Direct, and Google Scholar) for full-length, peer-reviewed journal articles written in English in the last 20 years was performed in August 2022 and January 2023. Articles were initially screened by title, abstract, and keywords, followed by full-length review and reference scanning. Data were systematically extracted from included articles, summarized, and presented in narrative and table form. Search terms included “hairdressers, barbers, cosmetology students, salons, barbershops, cosmetology schools, education, curriculum, intervention, knowledge, skin cancer, and melanoma." Thirteen sources of evidence were included in the review, all of which were empirical research studies. Nine studies evaluated the effectiveness of a skin cancer educational intervention for hair professionals or cosmetology students, and 4 assessed skin cancer knowledge, attitudes, or beliefs in this population. All interventions improved knowledge, confidence, screening behaviors, or referral practices in hair professionals or cosmetology students. No specific educational modality was more effective than another, no apparent difference was seen with different intervention lengths, and the type of information included within each educational modality was rarely discussed. Most hair professionals believe they lack adequate training or confidence in skin cancer detection and are interested in becoming educated on this subject. Short videos or live lectures were the preferred skin cancer educational modalities among hair professionals and cosmetology students. Brief skin cancer educational programs improve cosmetology students and hair professionals’ knowledge about melanoma and screening practices. This population has a perceived and measured need for skin cancer education. Including this type of program in the cosmetology school curriculum can effectively disseminate information to these individuals, leading to earlier diagnosis of melanomas on the scalp and neck, thus decreasing the mortality rate of this disease. Further research, including larger, diverse samples and more rigorous study designs, is needed to bolster the results of the review findings.

The impact of skin cancer education and skin self-examination on mothers’ sun protection behaviours: a randomised controlled trial

Background: Skin cancer is a serious disease that is now widespread, affecting many people globally. It has a high mortality rate both worldwide and in Türkiye. This study investigated the effect of educating parents of secondary school students about skin cancer, skin self-examination (SSE), and sun protection behaviors on their children’s sun protection behaviors. Methods: The study was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental study. The study sample consisted of 240 parents. Data were collected using an introductory information form, the skin cancer and sun knowledge scale (SCSKS), and the parental sun protection scale (PSPS). Results: After training, the number of parents in the experimental group who applied SSE to their children increased to 59.2% (p&lt;0.001). However, this rate was determined as 10.8% in the control group. Significant increases were observed in the total SCSKS score (16.02±3.64) and the sun protection (4.63±1.28), tanning (7.45±1.98), and skin cancer prevention (1.54±0.59) subdimensions in intervention group (p&lt;0.001). After training, a positive and significant difference was observed in the outcome for PSPS self-efficacy subdimension as well as for the sun avoidance scale- product usage expectations subdimension in the experimental group (p&lt;0.05). Conclusions: There was also an increase in the number of parents performing SSE on their children. Parents have an impact on their children’s health. Therefore, educating parents is critical both in terms of their own sun protection behaviors and for those of their children. It is recommended that intervention studies be conducted with larger sample groups.

Dr. V. Shanta: A Beacon of Hope for Indian Oncology.

Dr. V. Shanta was a pioneer in the field of oncology in India. Born into a family known for scientific contributions, she was inspired to pursue medicine and eventually joined the Cancer Institute in Chennai in 1955. Her efforts transformed the institute into a world-renowned center for cancer treatment, research, and education. Dr. Shanta's work focused on making cancer care accessible and affordable, particularly for the underprivileged, and made possible the establishment of regional cancer centers to reach rural and remote populations. She was also instrumental in introducing modern cancer therapies in India, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and tailored treatment protocols for Indian patients. Her work in cancer research was phenomenal and influenced national cancer policies. As a leader, she served on several expert committees, including those of the World Health Organization, and was honored with India's highest civilian awards for her contributions to medicine. Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Shanta was a compassionate healer who believed in holistic care. She addressed the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of her patients and left a lasting impact on patients. Dr. V. Shanta's life and work continue to inspire generations and her legacy remains a beacon of hope in the fight against cancer.

Leveraging Multi-Sectoral Partnership for Colorectal Cancer Education and Screening in the African American Community: A Protocol and Preliminary Results.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) awareness and screening rates are still low in African Americans (AAs), especially for those who do not have regular access to health care. We established a multi-sector community partnership between academia, health system, cancer advocacy, and local county treasurer's office (CTO), to test a pilot CRC screening intervention using a tailored educational brochure and fecal immunochemical test (FIT). Participants were recruited at a local CTO in an urban midwestern region. Once eligible, participants were assigned to 2-by-2 intervention arms by educational strategy (brochure vs. no brochure) and FIT provision strategy (direct provision by onsite staff vs. indirect provision via phone/online request). We compared the effect of different strategies on FIT return rates. Of 1500 individuals approached, 212 were eligible for the study. The final sample consisted of 209 participants who were predominantly men (57%) and AAs (85%). No differences were found in the return rates by educational brochure (24% [brochure] vs. 23% [no brochure]; p = 0.82). In regard to FIT provision strategy, direct FIT provision yielded higher return rates than indirect provision (31% vs. 15%; p = 0.01). When the four groups were compared, direct provision with education brochure yielded the highest return rates (33.9%), followed by direct provision only (27.5%), indirect provision only (18%), and indirect provision with a brochure (12.2%). For community-based CRC screening intervention using stool-based test, the direct provision of FIT kits with educational brochure outperforms the other three strategies.

Abstract B050: Health and faith in the Korean community: Increasing breast and colorectal cancer education and screening in Los Angeles

Abstract Background: Koreatown in Los Angeles is home to over 115 churches within 3 miles. Korean churches are sanctuaries that provide support and nurture social connections, especially among Korean immigrants with limited English proficiency, who face challenges in accessing cancer care, including language barriers, lack of health insurance, and fears associated with cancer screening procedures and treatments. Koreans experience higher incidence and prevalence rates of breast and colorectal cancers compared to non-Hispanic White and other Asian subgroups, respectively. To address this, a Health and Faith Initiative was launched in 2018, utilizing evidence-based strategies recommended by Center for Disease Control and Prevention Community Guide and the use of a Cancer 101 curriculum developed by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. METHODS: A three-stage Partnership Development Framework (networking, education, program and research development) was used to grow deep connections and sustainable cancer screening programs with church pastors and leaders, patient navigators, Federally Qualified Health Centers, State Breast and Cervical Early Detection Program providers, Diagnostic facilities, Hospitals and Community Outreach and Engagement staff. Bi- lingual church leaders was selected by pastors and elders at churches were trained as lay community navigators to conduct cancer education workshops using a Cancer 101 curriculum, as well as to support for church member to navigate across the cancer continuum. Church pastors and community health clinics determine outreach, engagement, and research priorities through active participation in Community Advisory Board and research studies. The initiative is sustained through coordination of 2 outreach staff and financial assistance from community benefit and research grants at Cedars Sinai Cancer Center. RESULTS: From June 2023 to May 2024, Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) have led the coordination of 6 breast cancer health education workshops and screening events with 165 people screened (128 screening mammograms, 37 diagnostic mammograms &amp; ultra sounds) in partnership with Koryo Health Foundation. Two patients were diagnosed with breast cancer and were referred to Cedars Sinai for treatment. For colorectal cancer, 8 health education workshops were conducted, and 122 Fit Kits were distributed with 72 kits returned, a 59% return rate. Cancer education workshops using American Cancer Society cancer screening guidelines for breast, colorectal, prostate, cervical, lung cancer has reached 810 people during 5 tabling events. Those who were not up to date were referred to our partnered health clinics for screening. CONCLUSION: Engaging Korean church leaders and training community navigators is an effective outreach strategy to build long-lasting partnership for successful implementation of cancer screening interventions but also support patients in needed follow up care that help immigrant populations to navigate across the cancer continuum. Abstract B109: Results from colorectal cancer and clinical trials health education in racially/ethnically diverse populations

Abstract Introduction: The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center implemented NCI’s Colorectal cancer (CRC) and Clinical Trials (CT) Education Initiative to foster awareness, knowledge and intent to uptake CRC screening or participate in CT. Racial/ethnic groups have higher death rates and shorter survival rates for most cancers and face additional disparities and inequities. CRC is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer. CRC screening reduces incidence and mortality, however, it is underutilized. CT are studies that evaluate methods to understand prevent, find and treat cancer plus assess safety &amp; effectiveness. Racial/ethnic populations CT participation is low. More diverse enrollment is needed to guide future cancer prevention, control, care and improve health equity. Methods: UCSF Community Health Educators engaged with community partners and the public to conduct CRC &amp; CT education. The education topics included understanding the colon and rectum, colorectal health promotion, risk factors, what is CRC and screening, access to screening, what are clinical trials, how they advance medical progress, diversity &amp; inclusion, types and phases of CT, informed consent, myths and facts, mistrust/other concerns, barriers, and how to find and enroll in CT. Education sessions included administering pre/post surveys- 19-item for CRC and 17-item for CT to measure knowledge and intention to get screened for CRC or participate in CT. Results: There were 772 total surveys (N=411 CRC completed pre/post, 361 completed CT pre/post). CRC respondents: 70% female, 30% male; 54 average age; 53% African American, 0.3% American Indian, 23% Asian, 13% Latino, 4% Pacific Islander, 3% White &amp; 3% Multiracial. Overall (from pre to post education) CRC knowledge significantly increased, as well as intent to get screened, and to ask healthcare provider about CRC. Knowledge improved pre to post by 14% (76% vs 91%). Post-education intent, respondents strongly agreed or agreed: 91% talk to healthcare provider, 92% get screened for CRC, 89% talk about CRC with family/friends, 95% eat healthier, 95% increase physical activity. CT respondents: 77% female, 23% male; 51 average age; 64% African American, 1.2% American Indian, 10% Asian, 17% Latino, 2% Pacific Islander, 4% White &amp; 2% Multiracial. Post CT education knowledge, intent to seek out CT information and intent to join significantly increased. CT knowledge improved pre to post by 7% (83% vs 90%). Post-education intent respondents strongly agreed or agreed: 69% seek out CT information, 59% search for CT, 75% talk to a healthcare provider about CT; 78% importance of people of color CT participation; 48% intent to join a CT and 70% talk to family/friends about joining a CT. Conclusion: CRC and CT education demonstrated efficacy in increasing awareness and knowledge and advanced intent to get colorectal cancer screening and enroll in clinical trials.
