Paraphrasing the Paraphrase OR what I learned from reading every issue of Canadian Literature & SCL/ ÉLC

This paper argues that digital humanities methods of distance reading constitute a valuable form of paraphrase of the field of Canadian Literature. In this paper I demonstrate the use of distance reading to analyze the entirety of two journals in the field: Canadian Literature and Studies in Canadian Literature/Etudes en litterature canadienne . I argue that this form of analysis may demonstrate the value in some forms of thematic paraphrase.

Opera Production and Civic Musical Life in 1870s Montreal

This article explores the origins and productions of the Société Canadienne d'Opérette et d'Opéra de Montréal, a short-lived opera company active in the late 1870s. Headed by Calixa Lavallée and Frantz Jehin Prume, the Société was established in part as a result of a decree that forbade the use mixed choirs throughout the archdiocese, and consequently made obsolete Lavallée's choir at Saint-Jacques Church. Following the success of their first production, Lavallée and Prume realized that the company might be used as a stepping-stone to the creation of a government-funded music school, modelled on the Paris Conservatoire. This article explores the social and political context in which the Société was created, and details the staging and reception of its productions of Gounod's Jeanne d'Arc and Boieldieu's La Dame blanche. In selecting these works for performance, the organizers responded to demands and constraints of a society accustomed to popular entertainment from the US and under pressure from the conservative and influential Catholic Church. They were works that were feasible to produce and likely to be successful in a city whose population was divided by religion, language and cultural traditions.

Vacationland: Film, Tourism, and Selling Canada, 1934-1948

Cet essai examine l’histoire des politiques et des interventions du gouvernement canadien dans l’utilisation de film cinématographiques pour vendre le Canada comme un lieu de vacances aux touristes américains entre 1934 et 1948. Le gouvernement reconnut alors que l’activité commerciale s’adressant aux touristes était un facteur clé dans la santé de l’économie nationale. Le secteur public adopta le cinéma comme le média le plus efficace et le plus moderne pour annoncer le Canada aux touristes potentiels outrefrontière. Les “films de touristes” qui sont sortis à la fois dans les salles et via d’autres réseaux de distribution ont présenté le Canada comme une destination touristique désirable en faisant un portrait antimoderniste des paysages canadiens en même temps que, paradoxalement, ils présentaient le Canada comme un état moderne.

Losing Heart: Declining Support and the Political Marketing of the Afghanistan Mission

Abstract. Public opinion shifted markedly between 2006 and 2007 regarding Canadian military participation in Afghanistan. Multivariate analysis of survey data reveals that the interplay of cognitive and emotional responses fractured support and consolidated opposition to the mission. Subsequently, a major government communication strategy, aimed at bolstering support for the Afghan mission succeeded at an informational level but failed to connect at an emotional one, leaving overall support for the mission essentially unchanged. Our analysis points to the need for nuanced interpretation of shifts in public support for war as well as in assessing political marketing efforts by government.Résumé. L'opinion publique s'est nettement décalée entre 2006 et 2007 concernant la participation militaire canadienne en Afghanistan. L'analyse multi variée des données d'aperçu indique que l'effet des réponses cognitives et émotives a divisé l'appui et a consolidé l'opposition à la mission. D'ailleurs, une stratégie importante de communication du gouvernement, destinée à augmenter le soutien de la mission afghane a réussi à un niveau informationnel, mais ne s'est pas reliée au niveau émotif, laissant le soutien global de la mission essentiellement inchangé. Notre analyse indique le besoin d'une interprétation diversifiée et nuancée des variations de soutien public face à la guerre ainsi qu'une évaluation du marketing politique du gouvernement.

Interest Group Adaptations to Campaign Finance Reform in Canada and the United States

Abstract.The United States and Canada enacted similar campaign finance reforms in the early 2000s. This article draws upon interviews with leaders of the major Canadian interest groups to explore similarities and differences in the responses of Canadian and American interest groups to reform. While groups in both countries shared an increased emphasis on mobilization and communication with members, the Canadian reforms were more effective at removing many groups from political campaigns entirely. This difference is primarily a result of differences in the two nations' party systems and the historical development of interest groups in the two countries.Résumé.Au début des années 2000, les États-Unis et le Canada ont promulgué des lois similaires visant la réforme du financement des campagnes électorales. Cet article est basé sur des entretiens avec les chefs des principaux groupes d'intérêt canadiens. Il étudie les ressemblances et les différences entre leurs réponses à ces réformes et celles des groupes d'intérêt américains. Même si les groupes des deux pays ont tous insisté sur la communication et la mobilisation de leurs membres, les réformes canadiennes ont mieux réussi à éliminer entièrement plusieurs groupes des campagnes électorales. Cette différence s'explique surtout par la structure différente des deux systèmes de partis politiques et par l'évolution historique des groupes d'intérêt dans ces deux pays.

Cet article examine l’emploi psychologique qu’ont fait douze canadiennes de races blanches du film Das zweite Erwhachen der Christa Klages (Le second éveil), visionné dans le cadre de leur certificat en éducation primaire. L’étude fait appel à des concepts de psychanalyse comme le transfert, la répression, le narcissisme, la mélancolie, l’idéalisation et la projection pour comprendre comment ce film est devenu pour elles non seulement un réceptacle pour le rêve sublime de l’amour de l’enseignement mais aussi un substitut pour certaines formes de froideur institutionnelle qui menacent d’anéantir le désir. L’auteure explique ce processus d’investigation– « le ‘screen-play’ pédagogique » –qui représente une utilisation innovatrice et interdisciplinaire des théories de la réception filmique.
