Factors Associated with the Uptake of HIV Testing in Canada: Evidence from a Nationally Representative Study

ABSTRACT In this study, we explore the factors associated with the uptake of HIV testing at the national level in Canada. Using the 2015–16 Canadian Community Health Survey and applying logistic regression analysis, we examine the associations between HIV testing and factors identified by the Andersen’s behavioral model of healthcare utilization. We find that a range of predisposing, enabling, and need factors are significantly associated with HIV testing. For example, compared to the oldest respondents (i.e. 55–64), their younger counterparts (i.e. 45–54, 35–44, and 25–34) are more likely to have been tested for HIV. Compared to those in Atlantic Canada, respondents in Quebec (OR = 1.96, p < .001), Ontario (OR = 1.44, p < .001), Prairies (OR = 1.37, p < .001), British Columbia (OR = 1.99, p < .001), and the Territories (OR = 2.22, p < .001) are all more likely to have been tested for HIV. Based on these findings, we provide several important suggestions for policymakers and future research.

Socio-demographic predictors of not having private dental insurance coverage: machine-learning algorithms may help identify the disadvantaged

BackgroundFor accessing dental care in Canada, approximately 62% of the population has employment-based insurance, 6% have some publicly funded coverage, and 32% have to pay out-of pocket. Those with no insurance or public coverage find dental care more unaffordable compared to those with private insurance. To support the development of more comprehensive publicly funded dental care programs, it is important to understand the socio-demographic attributes of all those, who find dental care unaffordable.MethodsThis study is a secondary analysis of the data collected from Ontarians during the latest available cycle of the Canadian Community Health Survey (2017-18), a cross-sectional survey that collects information on health status, health care utilization, and health determinants for the Canadian population. First, bivariate analysis was conducted to determine the characteristics of Ontarians who lack dental insurance. Afterwards, we employed machine learning (ML) to analyze data and identify risk indicators for not having private dental insurance. Specifically, we trained several supervised ML models and utilized Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) to determine the relative feature importance for not having private dental insurance from the best ML model [the gradient boosting (GBM)].ResultsApproximately one-third of Ontarians do not have private insurance coverage for dental care. Individuals with an income below $20,000, those unemployed or working part-time, seniors aged above 70, and those unable to afford to have their own housing are more at risk of not having private dental insurance, leading to financial barriers in accessing dental care.ConclusionIn the future, government-funded programs can incorporate these identified risk indicators when determining eligible populations for publicly funded dental programs. Understanding these attributes is critical for developing targeted and effective interventions, ensuring equitable access to dental care for Canadians.

Sociodemographic differences in recreational screen time before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada.

Over the last several years, recreational screen time has been increasing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, recreational screen time rose among Canadian youth and adults, and those who increased screen time had poorer self-reported mental health compared with those who decreased or maintained their recreational screen time levels. Using data from the 2017, 2018, and 2021 Canadian Community Health Survey, the prevalence of meeting the recreational screen time recommendation from the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines was compared before and during the pandemic across sociodemographic groups. Logistic regression was used to identify sociodemographic groups that were more likely to meet the recreational screen time recommendation before and during the pandemic. The amount of time Canadians spent engaging in daily recreational screen time increased from 2018 to 2021, leading to fewer youth and adults meeting the recreational screen time recommendation during the pandemic compared with before. The prevalence of meeting the recommendation was lower during the pandemic compared with before the pandemic among almost all sociodemographic groups. Among youth, living in a rural area was associated with a greater likelihood of meeting the recommendation before and during the pandemic. Among adults, the following characteristics were all associated with a greater likelihood of meeting the recommendation during the pandemic: being female; living in a rural area or a small population centre; identifying as South Asian; being an immigrant to Canada; living in a two-parent household; being married or in a common-law relationship or widowed, separated, or divorced; working full time; and being a health care worker. The prevalence of meeting the recreational screen time recommendation during the pandemic was lower overall compared with before the pandemic. Several sociodemographic groups were more likely to meet the recommendation during the pandemic. Continued surveillance of recreational screen time is necessary to monitor the indirect effects of the pandemic and to identify population subgroups that would benefit from tailored interventions in the pandemic recovery period.

A "food insecurity poverty line" to replace the official threshold in Canadian rural and urban settings? A single-person household perspective.

Household food insecurity is associated with both low income and high cost of living, it is a potentially better measure for consumption compared to income. We use data on food insecurity and income from 10years of the Canadian Community Health Survey (2007-2017) of single-person households (n = 145,044) to estimate the probability of being food insecure at the Canadian poverty thresholds (Market Basket Measure thresholds, or MBMs), and determine the income required to reach that probability in each MBM region, aggregated by province and rural/urban status. A regression model shows the probability of being food insecure at the MBM is approximately 30% which we call the Food Insecurity Poverty Line (FIPL). The income required to meet the FIPL is substantially different from the MBM, sometimes 1.25 times the MBM. This implies that food insecurity is a potential sentinel measure for poverty.

Evaluation of population-based screening programs on colorectal cancer screening uptake and predictors in Atlantic Canada: insights from a repeated cross-sectional study

BackgroundColorectal cancer (CRC) poses a significant public health challenge in Canada, with the Atlantic provinces bearing a particularly high burden. The implementation of population-based colon screening programs is aimed to address this concern. However, limited research exists on the effect of these programs especially in Canada. This study aimed to examine the impact of the first few years of the CRC screening programs in the Atlantic provinces of Canada by assessing changes in screening uptake, barriers, and predictors of screening among eligible populations.MethodsEmploying a repeated cross-sectional design, this study analyzed data from a representative sample of 7614 respondents in 2010 and 6850 in 2017 from the Atlantic provinces aged 50–74 years, extracted from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS). The outcomes measured were CRC screening rates, changes in predictors of screening uptake, and barriers to participation. Potential predictors examined included age, sex, income, education, smoking, and health status.ResultsThe proportion of adults aged 50–74 years who meet CRC screening requirements increased from 42% in 2010 to 54% in 2017 yet below the national target of 60%. New Brunswick reported the most significant increase in screening prevalence (18%, p < 0.05). Participation in fecal tests increased from 19.6 to 32.4%. Despite these improvements, disparities in screening participation remained, with lower uptake observed among individuals with lower income and education levels. Age (> 60 years, OR = 2.09, p < 0.01), the presence of multiple chronic health conditions (OR = 2.11, p < 0. 01), being female (OR = 1.21, p < 0.01), married status (OR = 1.21, p < 0.05), access to regular healthcare (OR = 1.91, p < 0.01), and nonsmoking status (OR = 2.55, p < 0.01) were identified as significant predictors of CRC screening uptake.ConclusionsThis study shows that while CRC screening uptake increased across the Atlantic provinces between 2010 and 2017, barriers to and disparities in screening participation persist. This highlights the need for targeted interventions to improve awareness, access, and screening uptake, particularly among disadvantaged groups, to promote equitable healthcare outcomes. Continued efforts should focus on reducing barriers to screening and leveraging available evidence to inform interventions aimed at mitigating the CRC burden in the region.

Disparities in positive mental health of sexual and gender minority adults in Canada.

The goal of this study was to examine potential disparities in positive mental health (PMH) among adults in Canada by sexual orientation and gender modality. Using 2019 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) Annual Component data (N = 57 034), we compared mean life satisfaction and the prevalence of high self-rated mental health (SRMH), happiness and community belonging between heterosexual and sexual minority adults, and between cisgender and gender minority adults. We used 2019 CCHS Rapid Response on PMH data (N = 11 486) to compare the prevalence of high psychological well-being between heterosexual and sexual minority adults. Linear and logistic regression analyses examined the between-group differences in mean life satisfaction and the other PMH outcomes, respectively. Sexual minority (vs. heterosexual) adults reported lower mean life satisfaction (B = -0.7, 95% CI: -0.8, -0.5) and were less likely to report high SRMH (OR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.3, 0.5), happiness (OR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.3, 0.5), community belonging (OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.5, 0.7) and psychological well-being (OR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.3, 0.6). Differences were not always significant for specific sexual minority groups in sexstratified analyses. Gender minority adults reported lower mean life satisfaction and were less likely to report high SRMH and happiness than cisgender adults. Future research could investigate how these PMH disparities arise, risk and protective factors in these populations, how other sociodemographic factors interact with sexual orientation and gender identity to influence PMH and changes in disparities over time.

Social Determinants of Sleep Apnea in Canada: A Cross-Sectional Study Exploring the Intersection Between Immigrants’ Length of Residence and Visible Minority Status

This study aims to explore the intersection between immigrants' length of residence and visible minority status, examining how these factors influence the likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) reported by a health professional. Utilizing data from the 2015-16 Canadian Community Health Survey and employing logistic regression analyses, we compare the prevalence of OSA reported by a health professional among distinct groups: white native-born, visible minority native-born, white recent immigrants, visible minority recent immigrants, white established immigrants, and visible minority established immigrants. At the unadjusted level, our findings indicate that visible minority native-born (cOR=0.57, p<0.001) and recent immigrants (cOR=0.34, p<0.001) are less likely to receive a sleep apnea diagnosis compared to white native-born individuals. However, when adjusting for demographic variables, particularly the age of respondents, the robustness of the significance diminishes for visible minority native-born (aOR=1.07, p>0.05), while becoming significant for white established immigrants (aOR=0.79, p<0.01). Despite remaining largely consistent after accounting for socioeconomic, behavioural, and health characteristics, the significance for visible minority recent immigrants (aOR=0.69, p>0.05) and white established immigrants (aOR=0.82, p<0.05) is substantially explained when considering BMI. Based on these findings, we discuss implications for policymakers and suggest avenues for future research.

Is private insurance enough to address barriers to accessing dental care? Findings from a Canadian population-based study

BackgroundIn Canada, as in many other countries, private dental insurance addresses financial barriers to a great extent thereby facilitating access to dental care. That said, insurance does not guarantee affordability, as there are issues with the quality and level of coverage of insurance plans. As such, individuals facing barriers to dental care experience poorer oral health. Therefore, it is important to examine more keenly the socio-demographic attributes of people with private insurance to particularly identify those, who despite having insurance, face challenges in accessing dental care and experience poorer oral health.MethodsThis study is a secondary data analysis of the most recent available cycle (2017-18) of the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), a national cross-sectional survey. Univariate analysis was conducted to determine the characteristics of Ontarians with private insurance (n = 17,678 representing 6919,814 Ontarians)—bivariate analysis to explore their financial barriers to dental care, and how they perceive their oral health. Additionally, logistic regressions were conducted to identify relationships between covariates and outcome variables.ResultsAnalysis shows that the majority of those with private insurance do not experience cost barriers to dental care and perceive their oral health as good to excellent. However, specific populations, including those aged 20–39 years, and those earning less than $40,000, despite having private dental insurance, face significantly more cost barriers to access to care compared to their counterparts. Additionally, those with the lowest income (earning less than $20,000 annually) perceived their oral health as “fair to poor” more than those earning more. Adjusted estimates revealed that respondents aged 20–39 were six times more likely to report cost barriers to dental care and ten times more likely to visit the dentist only for emergencies than those aged 12–19. Additionally, those aged 40–59 were two times more likely to report poorer oral health status compared to those aged 12–19.ConclusionGiven the upcoming implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan, the results of this study can support in identifying vulnerable populations who currently are ineligible for the Plan but can be benefitted from the coverage.

Understanding the impact of food insecurity status on unmet healthcare needs among Canadians

ABSTRACT Although Canada’s Health Act enshrines citizens’ access to healthcare regardless of their socioeconomic status, there are concerns that increasing food insecurity in the country could be undermining Canadians’ access to healthcare services. Therefore, our study sought to examine the association between food insecurity status and unmet healthcare needs by using the 2017–18 Canadian Community Health Survey and applying logistic regression analysis. Our findings revealed that Canadians with moderate food insecurity (OR = 1.95, p < 0.001) and severe food insecurity (OR = 2.34, p < 0.001) status were more likely to report unmet healthcare needs compared to their counterparts with food security. Based on our findings, we call for the urgency in addressing the increasing episodes of food insecurity in Canada to increase healthcare utilization.

Ascertaining the Francophone population in Ontario: validating the language variable in health data

BackgroundLanguage barriers can impact health care and outcomes. Valid and reliable language data is central to studying health inequalities in linguistic minorities. In Canada, language variables are available in administrative health databases; however, the validity of these variables has not been studied. This study assessed concordance between language variables from administrative health databases and language variables from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) to identify Francophones in Ontario.MethodsAn Ontario combined sample of CCHS cycles from 2000 to 2012 (from participants who consented to link their data) was individually linked to three administrative databases (home care, long-term care [LTC], and mental health admissions). In total, 27,111 respondents had at least one encounter in one of the three databases. Language spoken at home (LOSH) and first official language spoken (FOLS) from CCHS were used as reference standards to assess their concordance with the language variables in administrative health databases, using the Cohen kappa, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive values (NPV).ResultsLanguage variables from home care and LTC databases had the highest agreement with LOSH (kappa = 0.76 [95%CI, 0.735–0.793] and 0.75 [95%CI, 0.70–0.80], respectively) and FOLS (kappa = 0.66 for both). Sensitivity was higher with LOSH as the reference standard (75.5% [95%CI, 71.6–79.0] and 74.2% [95%CI, 67.3–80.1] for home care and LTC, respectively). With FOLS as the reference standard, the language variables in both data sources had modest sensitivity (53.1% [95%CI, 49.8–56.4] and 54.1% [95%CI, 48.3–59.7] in home care and LTC, respectively) but very high specificity (99.8% [95%CI, 99.7–99.9] and 99.6% [95%CI, 99.4–99.8]) and predictive values. The language variable from mental health admissions had poor agreement with all language variables in the CCHS.ConclusionsLanguage variables in home care and LTC health databases were most consistent with the language often spoken at home. Studies using language variables from administrative data can use the sensitivity and specificity reported from this study to gauge the level of mis-ascertainment error and the resulting bias.

Association between migraine and exclusive breastfeeding: A cross-sectional study.

Medical conditions may preclude a mother from exclusively breastfeeding her infant; however, the association between migraine and the duration of exclusive breastfeeding is not well known. To evaluate the association between migraine and the duration of exclusive breastfeeding in a representative sample of Canadian females. We used the Canadian Community Health Survey, a cross-sectional survey, to identify females aged 20-49 years who delivered a baby in the previous 5 years. History of migraine was self-reported. Females reported if they breastfed their baby, and among those who did, they further reported the duration of exclusive breastfeeding. We evaluated the association between migraine and the rate of breastfeeding, and the duration of exclusive breastfeeding adjusting for selected covariates. We included 5282 females, of whom 862 (16.3%) had migraine. Compared to females without migraine, females with migraine were less likely to have high income (annual income >$80,000: 362 [42.0] vs. 2276 [51.6]), and more likely to have comorbid mood (176 [20.5] vs. 378 [8.6%]) and anxiety (196 [22.8%] vs. 406 [9.2%]) disorders. Migraine was not associated with breastfeeding (proportion of females who did not breastfeed, migraine vs. no migraine: 114/862 [13.2%] vs. 498/4420 [11.3%]; adjusted odds ratio 1.03; 0.74-1.27); however, females with migraine had lower odds (≥6 months of exclusive breastfeeding: 216/688 [31.4%] vs. 1325/3561 [37.2%]; adjusted odds ratio from ordinal shift analyses 0.84; 0.71-0.99) of longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding than females without migraine. Females with migraine exclusively breastfeed their infants for a shorter duration compared to females without migraine, suggesting the need to better support this populationthrough education on the safety and benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and better access to safe and effective treatment of migraine in lactating females.

Assessing the role of dental insurance in oral health care disparities in Canadian adults.

This study examines the association of dental insurance with oral health care access and utilization in Canada while accounting for income and sociodemographic factors. It contributes to a baseline of oral health care disparities before the implementation of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). This retrospective study of Canadians aged 18 to 64 years is based on data from the 2022 Canadian Community Health Survey. Multivariable logistic regression was employed to evaluate the association of dental insurance with the recency and frequency of dental visits, as well as avoidance of dental care because of cost. Overall, 65.7% of Canadians reported visiting a dental professional in the previous year: 74.6% of those with private insurance, 62.8% with public insurance, and 49.8% uninsured. Cost-related avoidance of dental care was 16.0%, 20.9%, and 47.4% for the privately insured, publicly insured, and uninsured, respectively. After adjustment, adults with private (odds ratio [OR]=2.54; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.32 to 2.78) and public (OR=2.17; 95% CI: 1.75 to 2.68) insurance were more likely to have visited a dental professional in the last year compared with those without insurance. Similarly, both private (OR=0.22; 95% CI: 0.20 to 0.25) and public (OR=0.22; 95% CI: 0.17 to 0.29) insurance holders showed a significantly lower likelihood of avoiding dental visits because of cost when compared with uninsured individuals. This study showed the significant association of dental insurance with access to oral health care in Canada, contributing to setting a critical benchmark for assessments of the CDCP's effectiveness in addressing oral health disparities.

Exploring the Impact of Length of Residence and Food Insecurity on Weight Status Among Canadian Immigrants.

While the individual impacts of long-term residence and food insecurity on overweight/obesity are well-documented, their combined effect on immigrants' weight status is less understood. This study examines the interaction between length of residence and food insecurity in predicting overweight/obesity among immigrants and investigates whether this relationship is gender-specific. A national cross-sectional survey. The 2017-2018 Canadian Community Health Survey. Immigrants aged 18 and older (N = 13680). All focal variables were self-reported. Logistic regression models were employed. Long-term immigrants were more likely to report overweight/obesity than their short-term counterparts (OR = 1.39; P < .001). Moreover, immigrants from food-insecure households were at a higher risk of reporting overweight/obesity (OR = 1.27; P < .05) compared to those from food-secure households. The analysis further revealed that food insecurity exacerbated the detrimental association between length of residence and overweight/obesity in men (OR = 2.63; P < .01) but not in women (OR = .66; P > .05). The findings suggest that long-term immigrant men may be especially susceptible to the compounded chronic stressors of extended residence and food insecurity. Health professionals and policymakers should advocate for psychosocial resources to help mitigate these adverse effects and support the well-being of immigrant populations.

Prevalence of micronutrient inadequacy differs by severity of food insecurity among adults living in Canada in 2015.

Household food insecurity is generally associated with poorer quality diets in Canada, but whether household food insecurity heightens the probability of inadequate micronutrient intakes is unknown. The objective of this research was to investigate how prevalence of micronutrient inadequacy differed by severity of household food insecurity among adults in Canada. Using the 2015 Canadian Community Health Survey Nutrition, this study included participants aged 19-64 years who completed up to two 24 h dietary recalls and provided details about household food insecurity (n=9486). Children and older adults were not included due to sample size limitations. Usual micronutrient intake distributions were estimated by a four-level measure of food insecurity status using the National Cancer Institute method. Welch's t tests assessed differences in prevalence of inadequacy for selected micronutrients. Prevalence differed for some micronutrients among those living in marginally and moderately food insecure compared to food-secure households. The greatest differences in prevalence of inadequacy were observed between severely food-insecure and food-secure households: vitamin A (60.0%, SE=11.9vs. 40.6%, SE=2.7, p<0.0001), vitamin B6 (42.7%, SE=9.1vs. 12.8%, SE=2.5, p<0.0001), folate (39.4%, SE=10.0vs. 15.9%, SE=2.2, p<0.0001), vitamin C (63.3%, SE=5.2vs. 29.1%, SE=2.8, p<0.0001), calcium (78.6%, SE=6.4vs. 58.7%, SE=1.3, p<0.0001), magnesium (75.6%, SE=9.5vs. 48.7%, SE=1.2, p<0.0001), and zinc (34.9%, SE=10.0vs. 23.2%, SE=2.4, p=0.0009). Apparent underreporting also differed by severity of food insecurity, with increased underreporting observed with worsening food insecurity. The probability of inadequate micronutrient intakes among adults rises sharply with more severe household food insecurity in Canada.

The rural side of the rainbow: Mental health and the intersections of geography, sexuality, and partnership.

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) persons tend to be geographically concentrated in larger metropolitan areas and research persistently observes LGB persons as a disadvantaged population for mental health outcomes when compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Conflicting evidence suggests that mental health risk exposures are greater for LGB people in rural spaces while other research posits that urban residency is more detrimental for LGB mental health. One positively contributing factor to the mental well-being of LGB persons is their partnership status. To date, no study estimates how partnership may ameliorate unfavourable mental health outcomes for LGB populations in urban and rural areas. Using 10 years of pooled data from the nationally representative Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), this study examines mental health and the intersection of sexuality, geographic residency, and partnership. Logistic regression models estimate the intersections of sexuality, geography, and partnership status on mental health, stratified by respondents' gender. Findings show partnered gay men in rural areas experiencing better mental health than their partnered heterosexual counterparts in the largest urban cities. Although not significant, the same pattern is observed for partnered lesbian women who do not experience a significant mental health disadvantage at any geographic level. Regardless of partnership and geographic space, bisexual men, and especially bisexual women, exhibit worse mental health outcomes compared to their heterosexual counterparts.

Preconception health disparities among reproductive-aged women with and without disabilities in Canada.

Preconception health (PCH), which describes the health status of reproductive-aged individuals, can influence reproductive, maternal, and fetal/neonatal outcomes. PCH disparities have been observed in certain populations, prompting the development of tailored resources. Our objective was to compare the PCH characteristics of women with and without disabilities. We undertook a secondary analysis of the 2003-2014 cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), which included n = 115,295 women aged 15-49years. Among these, we also examined a sub-sample of n = 12,495 women with a subsequent obstetrical delivery identified in a linkage of the CCHS with the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD, 2003-2017). The outcomes were 8 PCH indicators. We used modified Poisson regression to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) for each PCH indicator, comparing women with and without disabilities, and multinomial logistic regression to calculate adjusted odds ratios for 1, 2, and ≥ 3 PCH indicators (vs. 0). Analyses were adjusted for baseline demographics. Reproductive-aged women with disabilities had significantly increased aPRs of smoking (1.42 [95% CI:1.37-1.48]), obesity (1.57 [1.48-1.65]), and self-reported fair/poor physical (5.56 [5.09-6.07]) and mental health (4.07 [3.71-4.47]), compared to those without disabilities. They were also more likely to have ≥ 3, 2, and 1 PCH indicators (vs. 0). Findings were similar in the sub-sample with a subsequent obstetrical delivery. Canadian reproductive-aged women with disabilities experience important PCH disparities. Further research is needed to inform tailored education and resources to support PCH in individuals with disabilities, in combination with policies to address structural barriers to PCH.

Using unsupervised clustering approaches to identify common mental health profiles and associated mental healthcare service use patterns in Ontario, Canada.

Mental health is a complex, multidimensional concept that goes beyond clinical diagnoses, including psychological distress, life stress and well-being. This study aims to use unsupervised clustering approaches to identify multidimensional mental health profiles that exist in the population, and their associated service use patterns. The data source for this study is the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey- Mental Health linked to administrative healthcare data holdings, included were all Ontario adult respondents. We used a Partioning Around Medoids clustering algorithm with Gower's proximity to identify groups with distinct combinations of mental health indicators and described them by their sociodemographic and service use characteristics. We identified four groups with distinct mental health profiles, including one group who met the clinical threshold for a depressive diagnosis, with the remaining three groups expressing differences in positive mental health, life stress and self-rated mental health. The four groups had different age, employment and income profiles and exhibited differential access to mental healthcare services. This study represents the first step in identifying complex profiles of mental health at the population level in Ontario, Canada. Further research is required to better understand the potential causes and consequences of belonging to each of the mental health profiles identified.

Food insecurity and body dissatisfaction in a sample of Canadian adults.

Food insecurity may predict poorer body image, which is associated with increased risk of mental health problems. However, minimal attention has been given to the food insecurity-body image link and to factors that may influence this link, such as assigned sex; importantly, females are more likely to experience both food insecurity and body dissatisfaction. The present study used data from the 2017 to 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey (N = 32,017) to investigate the effects of food insecurity and sex on body satisfaction via generalized ordered logistic regression. Results indicated: (1) Food insecurity predicted lower odds of body satisfaction, (2) Males were more likely than females to be satisfied with their bodies, and (3) Food insecurity no longer predicted body satisfaction following the inclusion of sex. Findings suggest the association between food insecurity and body satisfaction may largely be driven by the link between food insecurity and sex. Further investigation is warranted.

Trends in Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Canada: Variation by Migration and Temporal Factors, 2001-2018

BackgroundCardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in Canada, but how the major cardiovascular risk factors vary across ethnicity and immigration status has yet to be examined. MethodsUsing data from the Canadian Community Health Surveys, national trends in health conditions (hypertension, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and obesity) and health behaviours (smoking, activity levels, and alcohol consumption) were estimated from 2001 to 2018. In this cross-sectional study, the trends were then compared across sex, age, ethnicity, and immigration status. ResultsA total of 1,065,391 respondents were examined from 2001 to 2018. During the study period, the prevalence of the following risk factors increased in Canada over time: diabetes by 54.5%, hypertension by 23.4%, and obesity by 32.3%. For health behaviours, smoking decreased overall, especially in racialized populations. Heavy drinking was most prevalent for non-racialized and non-Indigenous Canadian-born populations and the lowest for racialized immigrants. Physical inactivity was most prevalent for racialized immigrant populations. The prevalence of self-reported heart disease decreased by 21.0%, except for racialized established immigrants (10 or more years since immigrating to Canada) with a 4.2% increase. ConclusionsDuring this study period, there were decreases in smoking and physical inactivity, along with increases in obesity, diabetes, and hypertension prevalence. By migration group status, established immigrants in Canada had a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors compared to their Canadian-born counterparts. Migration gaps should be considered in future interventions targeted at reducing these cardiovascular risk factors in Canada.
