Translation, adaptation, and validation of the Self-efficacy in Palliative Care scale (SEPC) for use in Swedish healthcare settings

BackgroundOne challenge for healthcare professionals when delivering palliative care can be their lack of confidence. The Self-efficacy in Palliative Care Scale (SEPC) is considered a valid and reliable assessment scale to evaluate confidence when delivering palliative care. Currently, there is not a reliable instrument aimed to measure healthcare professionals’ confidence in palliative care in Swedish. Therefore, this study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the SEPC-scale for use in a Swedish healthcare context.MethodsThis study applied the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines for translating and adapting instruments, using forward and back-translation, an expert panel, and cognitive interviews. Swedish experts in palliative care (n = 6) assessed the Swedish version of the SEPC-scale based on its relevance, understandability, clarity, and sensitivity on a Likert scale. Methods involved calculation of content validity index (CVI) with modified kappa statistics and cognitive interviewing with healthcare professionals (n = 10) according to the “think-aloud” method.ResultsCalculation of I-CVI (Item-CVI) showed that the Swedish SEPC-scale was considered relevant but needed some modifications to improve its understandability and clarity. The experts recognized an absence of precision in some items that affected clarity and understanding. Likewise, the healthcare professionals highlighted some challenges with understandability and clarity. They indicated that the scale was relevant, but a few items needed adjustment to fit a broader range of healthcare professionals. Items that referred to death and dying could be sensitive but were considered relevant.ConclusionsThe SEPC-scale is considered valid for use in Swedish healthcare practice, for a broad range of healthcare professionals, and for diagnoses other than cancer. This study shows that cultural adaptation is necessary for establishing relevance and enabling acceptance to various healthcare professionals and contexts in the target country.

Practice expectations for Australian graduate emergency nursing programs: A Delphi study

BackgroundPractice standards in nursing provide minimum expectations to enable the provision of high quality and safe care. There are currently no practice standards for post-registration graduate emergency nursing programs in Australia, leading to variation in graduate attributes and clinical expectations on completion of their program. ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to establish consensus-based practice standards for graduate emergency nursing programs in Australia. DesignDelphi approach. ParticipantsAustralian nurses who identified as an emergency nurse and currently worked, or previously worked, in an emergency care environment. MethodsA modified two-round Delphi method was used. The survey was divided into four sections of data collection, including demographics, graduate emergency nursing course entry requirements, graduate expectations, and clinical care capabilities. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics including calculation of content validity index (CVI). ResultsThere were 204 respondents in Round One and 153 respondents in Round Two. Respondents agreed that nurses wanting to undertake graduate studies in emergency nursing require prior experience in the emergency care environment and should be working a minimum of 0.5 full time equivalent (FTE) whilst completing their studies. Thirty-nine statements presented under graduate attributes achieved a CVI of >0.8. All 70 clinical care capability statements presented in Round Two achieved a CVI of >0.8. ConclusionThis study generated the evidence to establish minimum practice standards for Australian graduate emergency nursing programs. The standards centre around three key areas: graduate entry requirements, graduate attributes and clinical care capabilities. The standards provide a clear guide for employers, educators and clinicians, and inform capabilities for early career emergency nurses.

Validation of educational booklet: an educational technology in dengue prevention.

For data analysis, the calculation of Content Validity Index was carried out. the booklet, in general, was considered valid by the expert judges, since it obtained an overall CVI of 70%. However, it has undergone a textual and aesthetic re-elaboration. The changes were based on the substitution of expressions, phrases, information additions and language adequacy. The illustrations were redone, adding clarity, expressiveness, movement, interaction and contextualization. the booklet is valid to be used for the population, with the purpose of informing, in a playful way, the forms of prevention and combat to mosquito transmitting dengue.

Moral Distress (MD) and burnout in mental health nurses: a multicenter survey.

Introduction:Moral Distress (MD) is a common experience among nurses and if it is not recognised and treated, it may lead to serious consequences on nurses’ health and quality of care. MD has been studied in several healthcare contexts. However, there are only few studies on MD in psychiatry and in Italy there are no data in this field.Objective:To assess the presence of MD among mental health nurses in Italy and verify whether there is a relationship between MD and burnout.Methods:We conducted a multicentre survey among nurses of Mental Health services of four hospitals in Milan. The MD Scale for Psychiatric NursesItalianrevised (MDS-PItarev) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were used for data collection. Factor analysis and calculation of content validity index (CVI) and Cronbach’s alpha were performed on the Italian version of the MDS-PIta. Three items of the old version of the scale were removed, because judged not relevant in the Italian context. The revised scale maintained excellent CVI (0.89) and Cronbach’s alpha (0.93).Results:Of 285 questionnaires distributed, 228 (80%) were returned. The median of MD was 2 (scale range 0-6); MD is correlated with two burnout dimensions: emotional exhaustion (rho(ρ)=0.28, p<0,001) and depersonalization (ρ=0.20, p<0,001).Conclusions:This is the first study about MD among psychiatric nurses in Italy. We found a medium-low level of MD among nurses who participated in the survey. We also found a modest but significant correlation between MD and two dimensions of MBI. Further studies are needed to confirm these results.

In Brazil, acute respiratory infections (ARI) caused by influenza are frequent in the population and demand constant vigilance from the health services, which has urged new educational technologies for coping with the disease. In view of this, the objective of the study is to validate the content and appearance of an online course for influenza management, together with judges with experience in the health surveillance and epidemiological network. It is a methodological study, based on Falkemback's (2015) reference and calculation of content validity index (CVI). After the development of the course, there was the apparent validation, content and pedagogical aspects that involved the training, by judges considered specialists in the areas of distance education and epidemiological and health surveillance in the area of influenza respectively. In total, 13 judges participated in this validation stage and analyzed the following points: Accessibility; Usability; functionality; Content; Relevance; Efficiency and Environment. According to the results, the judges were mostly female, eight were nurses and the other were in the area of dentistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine and veterinary medicine and in relation to the content validity index there was consensus among the participants. At the end, it can be said that the course, through specific pedagogical and didactic resources, is a virtual educational technology that has enabled collaborative learning to facilitate learning about influenza.
