A new active packaging system based on chickpea-based edible coatings added with microcapsules of Cosmos sulphureus Cav. flower extract.

The Cosmos sulphureus Cav. plant is studied for its high polyphenolic content with antioxidant properties. Its flowers, rich in phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins, hold promise as antioxidants in food preservation. The inclusion of these compounds in chickpea-based coatings with a previously studied preservative effect would be an excellent option as a food preservation method and microencapsulation addresses challenges like dispersion and degradation of polyphenols in the coating. The objective of this research was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activity of Cosmos sulphureus leaves, seed, and flower extracts and explore the protective effects of chickpea-based coatings containing microcapsules of flower polyphenolic extract on the chemical quality of stored roasted sunflower seeds during storage. The ethanolic leaf extract exhibited the highest antiradical activity, followed by the aqueous flower extract. After a storage period of 15 days, at 40 °C, the chickpea-based coatings effectively delayed lipid oxidation in the roasted sunflowers seeds, and the inclusion of polyphenolic microcapsules with 0.01% extract (SMC 0.01%) in the coating significantly improved the protective effect. By day 15 of storage, SMC 0.01% showed comparable peroxide value, conjugated dienes, and linoleic acid content to samples containing the synthetic antioxidant BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene). Samples that only contained chickpea-based coating and coating with polyphenolic microcapsules with 0.005% extract exhibited significantly greater reduction in fatty acid content compared to the 0.01% SMC treatment. The chickpea-based coating with polyphenolic microcapsules demonstrated antioxidant activity akin to synthetic BHT, offering a promising biopackaging solution for lipid-rich foods like roasted sunflower seeds. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Enzyme inhibitory effects, antioxidant properties, minerals and essential oils of Polygonum afyonicum

Total phenolic content, total antioxidant capacity, radical scavenging activity, prominent enzyme inhibitory properties, bioelement concentration and fatty acid content were determined qualitatively and quantitatively. methanol and acetone extracts of Polygonum afyonicum. The DPPH radical scavenging effect of the plant was found to be significantly different (p˂0.05) than the synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxy toluene in the acetone extract with total phenolic content. The total antioxidant capacity of the acetone extract was higher than the methanolic extract total antioxidant status. The enzyme-inhibiting properties of acetone extract are also exceptionally high. It was found to inhibit acetylcholine esterase (86.97±3.76%) and exhibited inhibition activity as much as the standard substance galantamine (87.78±2.59%). In addition, it is seen that the tyrosinase enzyme inhibiting effect is high. Among the determined bioelements, those with the highest concentrations are Ca, K and Mg. It also contains elements (Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) which are included in the antioxidant enzyme structure. Palmitic acid (42.5%), 1-octadecanol (9.2%) and myristic acid (7.1%) were found the most in the content of essential fatty acids and components. As a result, it was determined that the acetone extract of Polygonum afyonicum showed more antioxidative properties. The species is also prominent with its neurodegenerative effects. In addition, there is a need for structural illumination studies to reveal the metabolites responsible for biological activity by determining the phytochemicals contained in the species

Evaluation of the active ingredients of green walnut husks in prolonging the shelf life of table cream compared to artificial antioxidants

The study was conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Food Sciences at the College of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Mosul - with the aim of using green walnut husk extracts to prolong the shelf life of table cream, with addition rates (zero, 100 ppm, 200 ppm) in addition to comparison with the industrial antioxidant BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene). with an addition rate (100-200 ppm) and a comparison sample without addition. Refrigerated storage of cream at 5 ± 1°C for a storage period of (1, 7, 14) days. The results of extracts from green walnut husks to cream stored in cold storage at addition rates of 100 and 200 ppm improved the chemical properties of the cream as it reduced the peroxide number and acidity number. This effect increased with the increase in the added concentration compared to the standard sample and the sample to which BHT was added. Adding green walnut husk extracts in the proportions mentioned previously limited the activity of total microorganisms and lipolytic and proteolytic bacteria in the cream during the storage period compared with the samples to which BHT was added and the standard sample. The best sensory evaluation was obtained for samples to which green walnut husk extracts were added during refrigerated storage compared to the standard sample and the sample to which they were added.

Antioxidative capacity evaluation of imine compounds as metal ions chelators and free radical scavengers in biodiesel

Factors affecting the oxidation stability of commercially available biodiesel were primarily investigated using the acid value (AV), peroxide value (PV), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis in the presence of imine antioxidants. In this study, the imine compounds N,N′-bis-(4-octadecanate)-salicyl ethylenediamine (stearic dhben) and N,N′-bis-(4-hexadecanate)-salicyl ethylenediamine (palmitic dhben) were synthesized to evaluate their abilities as metal chelators and oxygen scavengers. The AV analysis showed a slight difference between the samples with and without copper. The PV tests demonstrated that both imines were efficient free radical scavengers and copper ion chelators at both room temperature and 50 °C, outperforming the commercial antioxidants butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). The Derivative Thermogravimetry (DTG) curves indicated that both imines were more effective compared to commercial antioxidants. In the DPPH assay, it was observed that the palmitic dhben imine exhibited the best performance, with an half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 12.4·10−5 mol L−1. Therefore, both stearic and palmitic dhben imines act as efficient biodiesel antioxidants at room temperature and 50 °C, functioning as excellent metal chelators and free radical scavengers. However, stearic dhben demonstrated better performance as a metal chelator, whereas palmitic dhben was more effective as a free radical scavenger.

The effect of adding local myrtle leaves powder and industrial antioxidant Butylated Hydroxy Toluene to laying hens feeding on some biochemical characteristics and special enzymes against oxidative stress in laying hens blood

This experiment conducted in the poultry field "Al Sayada" affiliated to the Department of Animal Production at the College of Agriculture in the University of Kirkuk for the period 20/2/2022 to 12/6/2022 for 112 days (16 weeks), 200 laying hens, type "LOHMANN BROWN", at the age of 54 weeks, were randomly distributed to 10 nutritional treatments, with 5 replications for each treatment, and one repetition included 4 birds . The treatments were represented as follows: first treatment: control(without any adds), second treatment: first treatment + 1.0% myrtle leaves powder, third treatment: first treatment + 2.0% myrtle leaves powder, fourth treatment: first treatment + 0.05% Butylated hydroxytoluene, fifth treatment: The second transaction +0.05% Butylated hydroxytoluene, the sixth transaction: the third transaction +0.05% Butylated hydroxytoluene. It is clear from the statistical analysis of the study that there is a significant decrease (P≤0.05) in the levels of cholesterol, total protein and globulin for the addition treatments compared with the control treatment (without any addition) and an improvement in the levels of glucose, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein and albumin, as well as an improvement in the antioxidants Malondialdehyde and Glutathione In blood serum, it can be concluded that the addition of local myrtle leaves powder at rates of 1% and 2% with (BHT) at 0.05% enhanced the improvement of biochemical properties and antioxidant enzymes in serum of laying hens.

Semi-Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation Improved by Lignin and Extractives Removal from Sugarcane Bagasse

Lignocellulosic biomass and agro-industrial residues are a source of fermentable sugars; however, pretreatments are needed to overcome biomass recalcitrance. This study evaluated the effect of sugarcane bagasse hydrolysis and fermentation in response to dilute acid pretreatment. In natura bagasse, extractive-free bagasse, partially delignified bagasse, and bagasse with added butylated hydroxytoluene antioxidant were pretreated with diluted acid and investigated in semi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (S-SSF). The effect of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) resulted in lower yields of inhibitors in the liquid fraction of the acid pretreatment (0.01 g L−1 of furfural, 0.01 g L−1 of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and 0.68 g L−1 of acetic acid). Partially delignified material and material with BHT resulted in biomass with low hemicellulose and lignin contents, indicating that BHT influenced lignin removal. Extractives removal showed benefits for the acid pretreatment, decreasing the dioxane-soluble material, and a higher yield of glucose and ethanol via S-SSF for the partially delignified material. Enzymatic saccharification of partially delignified material showed 87% of cellulose conversion (24 h with 15 FPU/g), and after 48 h of S-SSF (25 FPU/g), residual 7.06 g L−1 of glucose and production of 15.17 g L−1 of ethanol were observed. The low content of extractives, lignin, and dioxane soluble material resulted in better cellulose accessibility and ethanol yield. Chemical compounds can help remove lignin from biomass favoring ethanol production by S-SSF.

Natural Antioxidants from Herbs and Spices and their effects for Improving the Functionality and Shelf Life of food and Dairy products: A Review

Due to efforts to make foods healthier by adding more polyunsaturated fatty acids and more sustainable by creating lightweight oxygen-permeable and light penetrating packaging, many foods are becoming more prone to oxidative rancidity. Antioxidants are used in meals to protect the lipid constituents from losing quality. The most widely utilised antioxidants are synthetic compounds like tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT), propyl gallate (PG), and butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA). There is an increasing need for natural antioxidants because it is thought that these substances may function as carcinogenesis promoters. Additionally, antioxidants aid the body's defences against diabetes, cancer, arthritis, asthma, and cardiovascular disorders. Fresh herbs are considered to be good providers of natural antioxidants, so include them in your diet may help you meet your daily requirement. Due to natural antioxidant components, spices and herbs are great sources of antioxidants for food preservation. Therefore, use of spices and herbs present a better choice than synthetic antioxidants, which has become popular and is widely accepted by consumers. The main antioxidants found in spices are phenolic chemicals, and there is a linear correlation between the total phenolic content and the antioxidant effects of spices. Antioxidant capabilities can be found in essential oils, oleoresins, and even aqueous extracts of spices. All agree that the lamiaceae family of plants is a significant source of natural antioxidants. In both Europe and the United States, rosemary is a common antioxidant. The antioxidant capabilities of oregano, thyme, marjoram, sage, basil, fenugreek, fennel, coriander, and pimento are also superior to those of the synthetic antioxidant BHT.

Effective utilization of waste pork fat as a potential alternate fuel in CRDI research diesel engine – Waste reduction and consumption technique

This work utilized the conventional transesterification process to convert waste pork fat into pork fat biodiesel. The produced biodiesel was meant to serve as a diesel fuel substitution for common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engines. Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) as an antioxidant doping with waste pork fat biodiesel-diesel blend has not been analyzed in CRDI diesel engines. Therefore, to improve the ignition process and reduce the engine exhaust emissions in a research CRDI diesel engine, the BHT was employed to combine with diesel-biodiesel mixtures in this work. BHT antioxidants are partially mixed (BHT 50, 100, and 150 ppm) to improve the physicochemical qualities of test fuel and enhance the combustion process of diesel-biodiesel blends (B20). The antioxidant purity was analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), structures were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyzer spectrograph was utilized to study the biodiesel chemical components. After mixing the BHT, the overall phase of the base fuel remained constant. The experiment outcomes revealed that the biodiesel had higher cylinder pressure than the other test fuels, and the BHT100 ppm blend had a higher heat release rate (HRR). B20BHT100 blend shows 3.98% higher brake thermal efficiency (BTE) at full load operation than pure biodiesel but lowered to diesel fuel. Biodiesel (B100) decreases the smoke opacity by 4.5% compared to diesel fuel. BHT has been incorporated into the biodiesel blend to minimize oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions at all loads. The B20BHT150 blend decreased NOx emissions by 5.06% more than diesel fuel at maximum load. Compared to pure biodiesel, the B20 blends reduce carbon monoxide (CO) emissions by 7.1% and hydrocarbon emission (HC) by 12.5%. This research found that adding BHT to biodiesel blends lowers NOx emissions with a slight impact on performance.

Composition, fatty acids profile, oxidative stability, and acceptance of meat from broiler chickens fed acerola ( Malpighia emarginata) meal-enriched diets

The large production of broilers and fruits in Brazil demands the exploration of new sources of nutrients for the birds and of sustainable disposal of the fruit industrialization wastes. The effects of feeding broiler chickens with residues from acerola industrialization (AM) on meat composition, fatty acids profile, oxidative stability and sensory characteristics were evaluated. Four soybean-corn based diets were tested: negative control, with no antioxidant nor AM; positive control, with butyl hydroxytoluene (BHT) and no AM; and two diets containing either 5 or 7.5% AM and no antioxidant. Official validated methods were used for the chemical and sensorial analyses of the meat. On breast, 7.5% AM increased protein (14.13%) and ash (10.6%) concentrations. On both cuts, AM reduced around 30% the cholesterol levels, decreased saturated fatty acids, increased polyunsaturated fatty acids and reduced n-6:n-3. AM at 5% delayed the onset of lipid peroxidation in frozen stored breasts more than did the antioxidant BHT (36 x 22.5 days). Breasts from treatment containing BHT had the worst sensorial acceptance by consumers. The addition of acerola meal to broiler chickens’ diets revealed a good option to provide healthier meat with longer shelf life, besides representing a way of reducing fruit waste in the environment.

Utilization of Green Tea Extract on Anti-aging Cream with Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) and Tertiary Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ): Physical Stability Aspect

Green tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) is a potent natural ingredient with flavonoid content that can be used as an antioxidant and anti-aging for skincare products. The formula containing green tea extract is usually formulated as oil in water emulsion or cream. The active components of green tea are catechins which are characterized as less stable against oxidation. Therefore, it is needed to add other antioxidants such as ButylatedHydroxy Toluene (BHT) and Tertiary–Butyl Hydroquinone (TBHQ) to protect the product from degradation. The aim of this study was to obtain a physically stable antiaging cream formula. Each formula was tested for physical stability by measuring several variables including organoleptic, pH, relative density, viscosity, and flow properties, as well as droplet size. Accelerated stability testing is carried out for 3 mo at 40 °C and 75 % relative humidity. The results found that cream with the BHT formula is more stable than the TBHQ formula in terms of the parameters of density and droplet size. While the TBHQ formula only gave better stability in pH, the other variables from both formulas remain stable in 3 mo. It can be concluded that the green tea extract cream with BHT antioxidant is more stable than the TBHQ.

Óleo essencial de pimenta-da-jamaica (Pimenta Dioica Lindl.) como potencial fonte antioxidante e antimicrobiana para uso em carne de frango desossada mecanicamente

Abstract This work aimed to characterize the allspice leaves essential oil (EO) and evaluate its antimicrobial activity against specific food-borne pathogenic microorganisms as well as its in vitro antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of different concentrations (0, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) of allspice EO was also evaluated in mechanically deboned poultry meat (MDPM) during storage of up to 10 days at 2 °C. Allspice EO presented as major compounds eugenol (55.52%), myrcene (22.53%) and chavicol (5.12%), and was effective against Gram-negative (P. aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria, having greater (p < 0.05) antimicrobial activity than its main component eugenol. In the in vitro antioxidant assays, the allspice EO had higher radical scavenging activity (90% versus 65%) than eugenol, presenting lower IC50 values (2.71 versus 9.49 µg/mL), but the antioxidant activity by the 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) did not differ (p > 0.05) from the synthetic antioxidant butyl-hydroxytoluene (BHT). Incorporating allspice EO in MDPM suppressed lipid oxidation during 8 days of cold storage, regardless of the amount used, exhibiting lower (p < 0.05) TBARS values during all storage periods than MDPM without EO. Allspice leaves EO had the high antioxidant potential to be used in MDPM and could also contribute an antimicrobial effect to the product in which the MDPM is used.

Antioxidant addition improves cholesterol and astaxanthin stability in dry salted shrimp.

Traditional production of dry salted shrimp enhances cholesterol oxidation and astaxanthin degradation in the product. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of addition of the antioxidants butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) to cooked shrimp on the formation of cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) and astaxanthin degradation during solar drying of shrimp. The added antioxidants significantly inhibited COPs formation after the product was boiled in brine. Smaller amounts of COPs were formed in antioxidant-treated shrimps (~-23%) as compared to untreated samples. The antioxidants continued to significantly inhibit COPs formation (~-39%) during sun drying. Similarly, TBHQ and BHT reduced by 51.3% and 37.2%, respectively, the degradation rate of astaxanthin, favoring a higher retention of this carotenoid in the final product. The use of the antioxidants BHT and TBHQ in the preparation of dry salted shrimp significantly inhibited the formation of COPs after cooking raw shrimp and during direct solar drying. They also protected astaxanthin contained in the cooked shrimp from photodegradation. These results are technologically relevant because it is possible to prepare a product with a higher content of astaxanthin and lower the presence of hazardous COPs. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Bioactive Metabolites of Microalgae from Canary Islands for Functional Food and Feed Uses.

Three freshwater microalgae (Spirogyra sp., Cosmarium sp., and Cosmarium blytii) collected from several locations in Gran Canaria have been studied to explore their potential as a novel source of bioactive compounds for biotechnological applications. Soluble carbohydrates were quantified after extraction with 3 M HCl at 100 °C, ranging from 35.8 to 43.3 %, and with water at room temperature, ranging from 19 to 22.8 %. Amino acids glutamic acid, proline and aspartic acid were quantified by RP-HPLC. Glutamic acid was the most abundant, ranging from 12.2 to 3.63 mg g-1 of dry biomass. Cosmarium blytii was the richest sample in amino acids (24.02 mg g-1 of dry weight). In addition, Cosmarium blytii and Spyrogira sp. exhibited higher radical scavenging activity (RSA) against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) than that of the synthetic antioxidant butylhydroxytoluene (BHT), commonly used as food additive. These results show a great potential of these microalgae for exploitation in the food, feed and pharmaceutical industries.

Anti-oxidative influence of butylated hydroxytoluene on chilled semen of Red Sokoto bucks and consequential conception rates in does

The anti-oxidative influence of Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) in three extenders on chilled semen of red Sokoto bucks and conception rates in does was evaluated. Twenty matured red Sokoto bucks were selected for this study. Two ejaculates were collected from each buck per week for a period of 4 weeks. Semen was collected from bucks using a battery-operated electro-ejaculator for semen analyses. Volume, colour, gross motility, concentration and percentage live spermatozoa were examined. A total of 10 ejaculates were further collected weekly from 10 selected bucks from the previous twenty good semen quality for 8 weeks. Semen was extended in tris egg-yolk (TEY), citrate egg-yolk (CEY) and tris-coconut water (TCW) extenders in test tubes, containing BHT antioxidant to obtain 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mM/mL BHT. Sperm characteristics were determined at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours of storage. Twenty multiparous does divided into 3 groups (A, B and C), of 7, 7 and 6 does respectively. These does received 250 μg cloprostenol intramuscularly, twice, 11 days apart and insemination was conducted 48 hours after. Groups A, B and C were inseminated with semen stored for 72 hours containing 1.0 mM/mL of BHT extended in TEY, 1.0 mM/mL of BHT extended in CEY and 0.5 mM/mL of BHT extended in TCW respectively. Ultrasonography was used for pregnancy diagnoses 47 days after artificial insemination. From the findings of this study, it was concluded that semen of red Sokoto bucks stored in tris egg yolk + 1.0 mM/mL BHT and chilled for 72 hours had better semen quality and conception rates.

Multifunctionality of Rapeseed Meal Protein Isolates Prepared by Sequential Isoelectric Precipitation.

Rapeseed meal is a by-product of the oil-producing industry with a currently underestimated application. Two protein isolates, PI2.5–8.5 or PI10.5–2.5, were obtained from industrial rapeseed meal after treatment with an aqueous ethanol solution. The alkaline-extracted proteins were sequentially precipitated by two different modes, from pH 10.5 to 2.5, and vice versa, from 2.5 to 8.5, with a step of 1 pH unit. The preparation approach influenced both the functional and antioxidant properties of the isolates. The PI10.5–2.5 exhibited higher water and oil absorption capacities than PI2.5–8.5, reaching 2.68 g H2O/g sample and 2.36 g oil/g sample, respectively. The emulsion stability of the PI2.5–8.5, evaluated after heating at 80 °C, was either 100% or close to 100% for all pH values studied (from 2 to 10), except for pH 6 where it reached 93.87%. For the PI10.5–2.5, decreases in the emulsion stability were observed at pH 8 (85.71%) and pH 10 (53.15%). In the entire concentration range, the PI10.5–2.5 exhibited a higher scavenging ability on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radicals than PI2.5–8.5 as evaluated by DPPH and 2-deoxyribose assays, respectively. At the highest concentration studied, 1.0%, the neutralization of DPPH radicals by PI10.5–2 reached half of that exhibited by synthetic antioxidant butylhydroxytoluene (82.65%). At the same concentration, the inhibition of hydroxyl radicals by PI10.5–2 (71.25%) was close to that achieved by mannitol (75.62%), which was used as a positive control. Established antioxidant capacities add value to the protein isolates that can thus be used as both emulsifiers and antioxidants.

Physiological and histological effects of the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) on white male rats exposed to starvation stress

This study was done to find out the effect of the antioxidant Hydroxytoluene (BHT) on some physiological and histological variables of rats subjected to stress by starvation. 50 kg) starvation + BHT concentration (mg/kg 100) starvation + BHT concentration (50 mg/kg) starvation + olive oil). The data indicate that starvation decreases the sex hormones of rats exposed to stress by starvation Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone(LH), Testosterone, and damage to testicular tissues, the antioxidant group BHT showed a concentration of (100,50 mg/kg) a protective effect against the negative effect of stress by starvation on sex hormones and testicular tissues by maintaining Its concentration is within its normal level, while the starvation group showed a negative effect on the concentration of sex hormones in the rats’ blood serum and testes tissue. The antioxidant BHT at concentrations of 50 and 100 mg/kg has an effective role in maintaining most of the physiological, biochemical, and histological variables from the negative effects of stress by starvation.

PEMBUATAN SABUN MANDI PADAT DENGAN PENAMBAHAN EKSTRAK DAUN AVICENNIA MARINA

Avicennia marina is a type of mangrove that is widely found in the coastal areas of Pangandaran Beach. In the leaves, there are alkaloid compounds, steroids and tritepenoid which are effective as antibacterial agents, besides that there are also flavonoid compounds that are effective as antioxidants. The antioxidant content in A. marina leaves can be used as a substitute for synthetic antioxidants BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene). Making soap by utilizing the antioxidant content in A. marina leaves was needed to replace synthetic antioxidants replace synthetic antioxidants that could cause allergies to the skin and carcinogenic. In this study, solid bath soap making with the addition of A. marina leaf extract used 4 treatments, namely P1 (0% leaf extract), P2 (2,07% leaf extract), P3 (4,14% leaf extract), P4 (6,21% leaf extract). The tests carried out were physical observation, pH, hedonic, foam height and foam stability, and cleanability test. It was known that the pH of all soap treatments met the standard. The hedonic test gave the result that P2 soap was the most preferred soap, with a score of 6,85. P4 provided the lowest level of foam stability and rigidity. From the overall observation, P2 was the best formulated solid bath soap.

Evaluation of traditional Brazilian sausage (linguiça calabresa) elaborated with oregano and basil extracts as natural antioxidants

This study aimed to evaluate traditional Brazilian sausage (linguiça calabresa) elaborated with oregano and basil extracts as natural antioxidants. Hydroalcoholic extracts of dried oregano and basil leaves were prepared, freeze-dried, and evaluated for antioxidant activity by Folin-Ciocalteu, DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS assays. Freeze-dried oregano extract showed higher (p < 0.05) antioxidant activity than freeze-dried basil extract by all methods. Extracts were used in preparations of seven sausage formulations, as follows: F1, 0.05% oregano extract and 0.05% basil extract; F2, 0.1% oregano extract and 0.05% basil extract; F3, 0.05% oregano extract and 0.1% basil extract; F4, 0.075% oregano extract and 0.075% basil extract, F5, 0.1% oregano extract and 0.1% basil extract; F6 (control), without extract; and F7, 0.01% butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Sausage formulations were analyzed for chemical composition, pH, acidity, water activity, lipid oxidation, color, and texture. Formulations showed differences in pH at different storage periods. F1, F2, F3, and F7 had the lowest (p < 0.05) lipid oxidation values at 53 days of storage. F1, F2, F6, and F7 showed higher a* values and lower b* values. Hardness and chewiness decreased (p < 0.05) during storage for all formulations. F1, F2, and F3 had similar efficiency to that with synthetic antioxidant BHT (F7), therefore, oregano and basil extracts have potential application as natural antioxidants in the food industry.

Ethanolic extract of mango seed in broiler feed: Effect on productive performance, segments of the digestive tract and blood parameters

The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of different levels of ethanolic extract of mango seed (EEMS) on performance, carcass characteristics, relative weight of the digestive tract segments and blood parameters of broiler chickens. For this purpose, 756 one-day-old male Ross 308 chicks were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with seven treatments and six replicates of 18 birds. The treatments consisted of: diet without addition of antioxidant (control); with addition of 200 mg/kg of the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT); and diets with 200, 400, 600, 800 or 1000 mg/kg of EEMS. There were no significant differences between the treatments for the performance variables, carcass characteristics, or the relative weight of the segments of the digestive tract. Regarding the serum lipid profile, it was observed that the broilers fed the control diet had significantly higher total cholesterol levels than the animals that received diets containing EEMS. However, there was no significant difference between the use of synthetic antioxidant BHT and the addition of EEMS at different levels. Ethanolic extract of mango seed in broiler chickens’ feeding from 1 to 42 days of age has no adverse effects on performance, carcass characteristics or relative weight of the segments of the digestive tract. However, it influences their lipid metabolism, reducing total plasma cholesterol from inclusion level 200 mg/kg.

PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF EXTRACTS OF SOME MEDICINAL PLANTS

In current study, we accepted out a systematic record of the relative antioxidant activity in selected medicinal plant species extracts. The total phenol varied from 25.3±7 to 278.4±7 mg g-1 in the extracts. Flavonoid contents were between 56±4.4 and 80.3±3.7. 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging result of the extracts was determined spectrophotometrically. The maximum radical scavenging consequence was observed in Metha pulegiam (Lamiacea) with IC50 = 0.018 mg ml-1. The strength of radical scavenging power of Metha pulegiam extract was about 4 times better than synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT). The superior amount of phenolic compounds leads to further potent radical scavenging result as shown by Metha pulegiam leaves extract.
