Board Size and Firm Performance: The Moderating Role of Female Representation

This research aims to investigate the commissioner’s number of boards on the Indonesian go-public company’s performance. The disparity in types of gender begs the question of whether the applicability of women’s governance may lead to firm performance. So, the women's presence on that effect as the moderating factor is also examined and analyzed using panel data regression and ordinary least squares in this research. The study's samples are non-financial firms from 2015 until 2019, with 1210 observations. The commissioner's number of boards significantly affects Tobin's q and the market-to-book value ratio as the business performance measurement. Yet, the women’s board of commissioner’s proportion as the moderating factor did not affect the relationship between the commissioner's number of boards and the Indonesian go-public company's performance because of the small number of women on the board. It remains negligible since the dominant gender in the board of commissioners is men in Indonesian non-financial go-public companies, so the women directors may not improve the company’s performance. This study will help various businesses in various sectors by shedding light on the ideal board size for boosting productivity. It also acknowledges the significance of gender diversity on boards so that companies may make educated decisions about their boards' makeup and governance procedures. Given that women make up the minority of CEOs, policymakers will utilize these findings to create rules and directives that support gender diversity on boards and enhance business performance.

Extremes of Emergency Department Boarding are Associated With Poorer Financial Performance Among Hospitals.

Boarding emergency department (ED) patients is associated with reductions in quality of care, patient safety and experience, and ED operational efficiency. However, ED boarding is ultimately reflective of inefficiencies in hospital capacity management. The ability of a hospital to accommodate variability in patient flow presumably affects its financial performance, but this relationship is not well studied. We investigated the relationship between ED boarding and hospital financial performance measures. Our objective was to see if there was an association between key financial measures of business performance and limitations in patient progression efficiency, as evidenced by ED boarding. Cross-sectional ED operational data were collected from the Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance, a voluntarily self-reporting operational database that includes 54% of EDs in the United States. Freestanding EDs, pediatric EDs and EDs with missing boarding data were excluded. The key operational outcome variable was boarding time. We reviewed the financial information of these nonprofit institutions by accessing their Internal Revenue Service Form 990. We examined standard measures of financial performance, including return on equity, total margin, total asset turnover, and equity multiplier (EM). We studied these associations using quantile regressions of added ED volume, ED admission percentage, urban versus nonurban ED site location, trauma status, and percentage of the population receiving Medicare and Medicaid as covariates in the regression models. Operational data were available for 892 EDs from 31 states. Of those, 127 reported a Form 990 in the year corresponding to the ED boarding measures. Median boarding time across EDs was 148min (interquartile range [IQR]: 100-216). A significant relationship exists between boarding and the EM, along with a negative association with the hospital's total profit margin in the highest-performing hospitals (by profit margin percentage). After adjusting for the covariates in the regression model, we found that for every 10min above 90min of boarding, the mean EM for the top quartile increased from 245.8% to 249.5% (p <.001). In hospitals in the top 90th percentile of total margin, every 10min beyond the median ED boarding interval led to a decrease in total margin of 0.24%. Using the largest available national registry of ED operational data and concordant nonprofit financial reports, higher boarding among the highest-profitability hospitals (i.e., top 10%) is associated with a drag on profit margin, while hospitals with the highest boarding are associated with the highest leverage (i.e., indicated by the EM). These relationships suggest an association between a key ED indicator of hospital capacity management and overall institutional financial performance.

Study of employee performance measurement, evaluation and management practices in tourism and catering companies in Szeklerland(with special reference to Harghita county)

As a resource, people are one of the most important factors in the modern economy. From a subjective measurement approach, it can form the basis of business performance measurement. In this research, I am looking for answers to the question: what does business practice show, and how consistent is it with theoretical findings? The results of the research show that companies operating in the hospitality sector in Harghita County are consistently aware of the fact that employee performance contributes greatly to company performance. For this very reason, employee guidance, performance monitoring and feedback are considered significantly important. Employee performance is measured and evaluated informally, often on a monthly basis. The standardised, formal form of measurement, on the other hand, is only done annually, from time to time when necessary. However, its frequency increases significantly with the size of the company. Companies are moderately satisfied with the current employee performance measurement and evaluation. They are therefore aware that there is room for improvement. In their opinion, the introduction of a performance management system in the future would make a significant contribution to solving the problems discussed in the research. In doing so, it would also contribute to the improving of the company's business performance at the same time. Our development objective could be to provide guidance in this area for the future.

Leagile supply chains and sustainable business performance: application of total interpretive structural modelling

This study aims to develop an integrated model for the leagile (lean + agile) supply chain strategy to achieve sustainable business performance across the triple bottom line, including economic, environmental, and social performance. We draw upon a literature review and experts’ opinion, using total interpretive structural modelling (TISM), to determine interrelationships among leagile supply chain practices and sustainable business performance measures. To this end, first, unique and common practices of lean and agile supply chain strategies, i.e. leagile building blocks, are identified through a synthesis of the literature. Second, semi-structured interviews with four experts are conducted to gain an understanding of the mutual relationships among the leagile building blocks and to meticulously adjudicate their interactions with sustainable business performance measures. Validated by two independent researchers and literature enfolding, the final TISM model provides a 10-level hierarchical representation of the leagile supply chain strategy for sustainable business performance.

A data set of Japanese corporates’ green transformation technologies patents

Abstract* In 2020, the Government of Japan declared 2050 “carbon neutral” and launched a long-term strategy to create a “virtuous cycle of economy and environment.” Japanese corporations possess many technologies that contribute to decarbonization, which is important for expanding investments in green transformation technology inventory (GXTI) development. Patent data are the most reliable measure of business performance for applied research and development activities when investigating knowledge domains or technological evolution. Our paper describes a Japanese patent dataset of Japanese corporations’ green transformation (GX) patent applications on the Japan Platform for Patent Information, using a search method of bombinating International Patent Classification (IPC) codes and keywords. The dataset contains 37,476 GX patent applications from 298 corporations during the period 1999–2022.

The Effect of Brand Equity on Brand Loyalty to Skincare Products Mediated By Customer Satisfaction

Maintaining and increasing brand loyalty is paramount due to a decrease in product differentiation and an increase in product market uncertainty. Therefore, brand loyalty is a measure of a company's business performance that affects the market share of a product. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of brand equity and brand loyalty on mediated by customer satisfaction and to confirm the significant dimensions of brand equity. The population of this study are Scarlett skincare users who live in Jakarta and Bekasi whose numbers are unknown. Respondents of this study were 115 respondents with the criteria of Scarlett skincare users aged 17-30 who have bought and used Scralett Skincare in the last 6 months. The analysis method used is Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling. The results stated that perceived quality and perceived cost value can increase customer satisfaction, perceived quality and customer satisfaction have a positive effect on brand loyalty, however, brand identification, brand trust and lifestyle alignment have no effect on customer satisfaction. Perceived quality and perceived cost value on brand loyalty are mediated by customer satisfaction, while brand identification, brand trust and lifestyle alignment are not proven. Future research is expected to expand the range of regions and add other variables related to brand loyalty such as brand image.

People who have disabilities, both physical and mental, are an essential component of society. And by providing support or opportunities for them, they can help create social equality and inclusion. People with disabilities are often associated with a physical identity, leading to stereotypes about their abilities, which can lead to discrimination. The Batik training program for people with disabilities is an initiative that can help improve skills, encourage social inclusion, increase empowerment, and provide employment opportunities. Measuring the value of benefits relative to investment costs used in efforts to empower disabled Women through Batik training in collaboration with House of Batik Berkah Jambi. The evaluation recommends using the Social Return on Investment (SROI) method. The return on social investment method can help measure business performance. The social performance of an ongoing SROI is considered appropriate for understanding impact investing (investment activities that aim to create a social impact), such as activities funded from the company's TJSL funds, which are expected to create a social impact on the community, especially the company's local community. The method of implementing the activities used is qualitative research because this activity is exploratory, descriptive research. Sources were selected using a purposive sampling technique. For SROI evaluation, According to the guidelines issued by the SROI Network UK organization, this research must examine six (six) stages of the SROI analysis method. These stages will include the 2023 SROI empowerment analysis disable program results, providing an SROI value of 2.47 with criteria worth pursuing. This means that PT PLN (Persero) UID S2JB generates a profitable social impact and produces a high SROI ratio.

Introducing the overall risk scoring as an early warning system

Business performance is a critical field of study, which should be assessed in more than just credit risk in the banking context. However, much previous research takes business performance in the context of credit risk in banking. In this study, risks will be analyzed to measure business performance in an integrated manner within the framework of non-financial sector dynamics. To this end, brainstorming sessions, risk workshops, surveys, and face-to-face interviews were held with representatives of small medium enterprises in 11 different sectors. Through field studies, risks have been identified and assessed in terms of impact and probability, Key Risk Indicators have been determined, and risks have been scored based on financial and non-financial metrics to estimate the Overall Risk Scoring. Moreover, the Overall Risk Scoring model has been tested using Logit Regression and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), the Naïve Bayes Algorithm, and the C4.5 decision tree model. All methods have statistically verified that the predictive power of the structure of the Overall Risk Scoring is high. Our findings reveal that when business performance is analyzed with non-financial and financial metrics, dynamic and static data, market expectations, and banking needs, the predictive power of the calculated Overall Risk Scoring increases. The created Overall Risk Scoring Model can be used as an early warning system for many objectives by business executives, suppliers, consumers, investors, financial institutions, public bodies, credit rating agencies, and entities like the Credit Guarantee Fund.

Boundaries of management performance measures (MPMs) disclosed in primary financial statements prepared in accordance with new standard planned to supersede IAS 1

Abstract We outline the management performance measures (MPMs)' boundaries based on the upcoming introduction of MPM's definition to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The literature investigates business performance measures concentrating on managers' needs, while IFRS aims to provide financial information to external users who provide resources to the entity. This indicates a gap between how performance metrics have been investigated so far and how IFRS will adopt them. We used analysis of the exposure draft of the planned standard together with working materials developed in the consultation process. Further, a case study is presented. Results show that the scope of MPM to be introduced to IFRS is limited compared to the broad spectrum of performance measures presented in the literature. We contribute by showing the avenues for future performance measures research using signalling and agency theory and by indicating the limited scope of MPMs and thus bound prospects for using them for a full assessment of the entity‘s performance.

A Study of Competitiveness in Logistics Firms in Vietnam

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the competitiveness of logistics firms in Hanoi and neighboring provinces in Vietnam, and compare respondents' assessments of competitiveness in logistics firms. Method: The sample size in this study was adjusted to the regression model. The research sample consists of 225 respondents working for logistics firms in Hanoi and neighboring provinces. We designed a questionnaire related to the competitiveness of logistics firms. We determined the observed variables (scales) of the competitiveness of logistics firms based on previous studies and expert interview results. We use both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including reliability analysis through the Cronbach alpha coefficient, EFA analysis, the independent T test, and ANOVA analysis. Results: The findings in this study prove that four attributes of the competitiveness of logistics firms are quite high. All the attributes of the variables are statistically significant. There is no statistically significant difference in the competitiveness of logistics firms between these different marital statuses, work locations, career seniority, and job positions. Conclusions: This research broadens our understanding of the importance of the competitiveness of logistics firms in Hanoi and neighboring provinces in Vietnam. This research has expanded the competitiveness of logistics firms in Hanoi and neighboring provinces in Vietnam as an activity with profound business performance impacts. This study can be a basis for other research works and policy design oriented to achieve a comprehensive measurement of business performance and make business strategy in the firm. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of business administration science, especially in the logistics sector.

Internal Factors Determining MSME Business Performance: A Literature Study

This research aims to examine the internal factors that determine MSME business performance. This research uses a literature review approach. The data collection technique in this research uses the literature study method. The data that has been collected is then analyzed using three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The research results show that the internal factor determining MSME business performance is that MSMEs are essential in developing the national economy. Hence, MSMEs require more attention regarding their business performance. Performance is a result of efforts made both in quality and quantity. The measurement of MSME business performance can be seen from the increase in sales, which is the increase in the number of purchases made by customers for the goods sold. In a business, performance always rises and falls, as does MSME business performance because several internal factors determine it: finance, customers, internal business processes, learning, and growth.&#x0D;

A Qualitative Approach to Marketing Research and Business Performance Measurement

This paper aims to discuss about the qualitative approach to marketing research as part of business performance measurement in the present. This paper compares three qualitative approaches include phenomenology, grounded theory and ethnography. It would be beneficial for the development of the theory and help making effective business decisions. This paper shows that qualitative methods are now acceptable for consumer research and a wider field of marketing. This paper offers from the perspective of qualitative research methods and some of their possible application in marketing research and business performance measurement.

Analysis of Productivity and Competitiveness in Beekeeping: A Case Study of Cundinamarca, Colombia

Purpose: The objective of this article is to analyze the productivity and competitiveness of beekeepers located in the department of Cundinamarca, Colombia. Theoretical framework: Measuring productivity and competitiveness is a fundamental aspect of business management. In the case of beekeeping in Colombia, which has artisanal nature based on local knowledge and traditional practices, there is usually a lack of records and information that would allow this type of study. Design/Methodology/Approach: We designed a questionnaire related to productive factors and competitiveness in beekeeping and applied it to members of the Association of Environmentalist Beekeepers. We determined the productive index and the profitability of assets and equity -identified as measures of the beekeepers’ productivity and competitiveness- for the year 2020 using a quantitative analysis. Findings: The depreciation of fixed assets is the highest production cost. The organizational and technological management implemented by the producers, as well as the time dedicated to beekeeping, are relevant factors to achieve productivity and business competitiveness. Research, Practical &amp; Social implications: This research has expanded the comprehension of beekeeping as an activity with profound economic, social, and environmental impacts. This study can be a basis for other research works and policy design oriented to achieve a comprehensive measurement of business performance and make programs to impulse the beekeepers in the country. Originality/Value: This research broadens the understanding of the importance of cost management in the productivity and competitiveness of the beekeepers studied. We do not approach productivity as the quantity of honey and pollen produced but as the production efficiency. Competitiveness was evaluated using globally accepted indicators and easily interpreted to measure business performance.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CEO DUALITY AND FIRM PERFORMANCE IN LIGHT OF BOARD SIZE AS A MODERATOR

This research investigates the intricate link between CEO duality and company performance in Texas service organizations while illuminating the moderating role of the number of directors. To accomplish this, the study conducts a comprehensive analysis using a dataset of Texas service companies over a specific time frame. Rigorous statistical methods, including multiple regression analysis and moderation analysis, are employed to assess the relationship between CEO duality, board size, and company performance. Various performance metrics, such as return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and Tobin's Q ratio, are used to measure business performance. Panel data from 2018 to 2020 are gathered from published accounts, and the research utilizes IGLS regression models to test the theory. The findings reveal a complex relationship between CEO duality and business performance in Texas service firms, with CEO duality significantly correlated with firm performance, and board size playing a substantial moderating role. This study offers valuable guidance to the boards of directors and executives of Texas service organizations on optimizing board sizes and governance structures to enhance company performance. It also advances our understanding of the nuanced interactions between CEO duality and board size within the broader corporate governance literature, emphasizing the context-specific nature of these effects. Additionally, this research contributes to the field by examining these dynamics within the unique context of Texas service organizations, shedding light on their distinct characteristics and governance requirements compared to businesses in other regions or industries.

Environmental commitment, sustainable development, and regional efficiency in waste collection activities

AbstractWaste management industry is key to achieve environmental commitment, clean production, and Circular business models; as well as to promote sustainable development. The aim of this study is to contribute to the Circular Economy measuring business performance and firm efficiency of waste collection activities and their determinants, with emphasis on sustainable development and environmental challenges. The main research goals of this study are as follows: first, to examine firm efficiency scores in waste collection activity (dangerous and non‐dangerous waste); second, to analyze the main fluctuation patterns of business efficiency; third, to evaluate the differences in the average efficiency according to region; finally, to examine the relationship between efficiency score and environmental challenges (investment in environmental protection and COVID‐19 pandemic impact). The efficiency of firms is estimated using non‐parametric production frontiers in a sample of 5441 observations for the period 2010–2020. We used several non‐parametric tests, such as the Mann–Whitney U test and the Kruskal–Wallis test; as well as several regression models (Tobit and bootstrapping regressions) to test the relationship between efficiency scores and environmental variables. The main findings of this study provide new empirical evidence and go a step further, not only at the firm level, but also at the regional level.

The effects of digital business strategy on the collaboration performance of companies: the moderating effect of digitally enabled performance measurement

PurposeDigital transformation shapes industries and influences the forms of collaboration between companies. This study aims to investigate digital business strategy as a key to facilitating collaboration beyond organizational boundaries.Design/methodology/approachThe study focuses on the connection between digital business strategy and collaboration performance. The authors identify five types of digital business strategy elements based on the literature: development, objectives, resources, management capabilities, and digital leadership. The authors then studied the implications of these elements for collaboration performance using a survey. The study’s empirical data were collected from manufacturing and service companies, and 202 valid responses were received. The implications of the research elements were tested through regression analysis, which included the moderating effects of digitally enabled performance measurement.FindingsThe theoretical research framework identifies digital business strategy as a key determinant of collaboration performance, thus advancing the understanding of how companies can utilize digital business strategies and achieve enhanced collaboration performance. The results also show that the effect of digital business strategy on collaboration performance may be moderated by digitally enabled performance management.Practical implicationsThe results suggest that management capabilities associated with digital strategy are a crucial element in positively influencing collaboration performance. Further, digital strategy-related resources can be better managed with digitally enabled performance measurement system, which is reflected in improved collaborative performance. Thus, companies should invest in management capabilities and connect their digital business strategies and performance measurement systems to develop collaboration in digital transformation.Originality/valueThe study is among the first to translate an empirical understanding of the digital transformation of small and medium-sized companies into a conceptual framework of a digital business strategy.

Management effectiveness as a driver of sustainable business performance in Bangladesh's selected electronic companies' adoption of revolution 4.0

This study examines how managerial efficiency drives sustainable business success in selected electronic enterprises in Bangladesh's implementation of Industry 4.0, also known as Revolution 4.0. Industry 4.0's rapid evolution requires a thorough grasp of how management practices affect business results in the electronic industry, which is crucial to the country's economic growth and technical improvement. Structured surveys are delivered to electronic company executives, middle management, and workers in the research. Correlation analysis and regression modelling are used to identify empirical correlations between management effectiveness indicators and sustainable business performance measurements. Management effectiveness and sector 4.0 implementation in the Bangladeshi electronic sector are the subject of the research. This study should illuminate management effectiveness factors that affect Industry 4.0 technology and practice integration. The research should also discover managerial practices that boost sustainable business success. These findings can help policymakers, industry practitioners, and researchers improve management and technological adoption to boost Bangladesh's electronic economy in Revolution 4.0.

Behavior of SMEs in Implementation of financial accounting standards for SMEs to increase performance

SMEs are one of the driving forces of the Indonesian economy with abundant resources that have not been fully utilized. The role of SMEs is very important, so it must be considered how to improve the performance of these SMEs, namely through financial reports, the main problem in developing these businesses is financial management. SMEs are not yet aware of the importance of financial statements in a company because of limited information and knowledge about accounting. In the era of society 5.0 is a new era, where SMEs must be able to seize the golden opportunities to improve their business performance. To overcome the challenges, SMEs must make financial reports in accordance with the applicable financial accounting standards. With financial reports, SMEs can measure business performance and can be used as a basis for banks to assess the feasibility of SMEs. Based on these conditions, the purpose of this study is to analyze the behavior of SMEs towards the interest in implementing financial accounting standards for SMEs in improving their business performance. There are four factors that determine the interest of SMEs in implementing financial accounting standards for SMEs, namely performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions and social influence. Factors Affecting Business Performance: Expanding Theoretical Measurements

Purpose: The article aims to expand a scale system of factors that impacts on business performance. Theoretical framework: The paper based on the empirical data collected from various types of participants, including accountants (for information providing), managers (for decision-making), sales staff (for work), and lecturers (for research) in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach: By descriptive and comparative statistical analysis of SPSS 20 software with 124 valid observations, the survey has proposed the scale system of influencing factors (03 groups of external factors, 05 groups of internal factors) and business performance measures (10 financial and 11 non-financial indicators). Findings: This study points out the different evaluations according to the demographic features of survey subjects on the group of financial indicators. Specifically, the group of accountants (representing information providers) obtains a lower score than the group of information users. Likewise, the post-graduated participants show stricter assessments of financial indicators in comparison to the rest of the group. Research, Practical &amp; Social implications: These results suggest the scale system for measuring influencing factors toward business performance in enterprises for further research. Originality/value: The value of the study is providing an expansion of the factors affecting the efficiency of an enterprise and points out a commonly used set of financial performance measurement indicators. Research results provide useful references for research on related issues.
