With the technological advancements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, traditional manufacturing industries are transitioning to platform entrepreneurship utilizing AI and robotics technology. This shift contributes to national economic growth and job creation, aligning with the “Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation” initiative advocated by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in 2015, which drives the development of the platform economy. This study empirically analyzes the impact of entrepreneurial motivation, individual competencies, and entrepreneurial environmental factors on entrepreneurial behavior, with a mediating effect of business opportunity recognition, based on data collected from 515 online platform entrepreneurs in China’s four major municipalities. Using SPSS V. 24.0 and Process Macro 4.0 for analysis, the results indicate that economic and non-economic motivations, interpersonal competencies, digital utilization competencies, entrepreneurial education, financial status evaluation, and entrepreneurial support programs positively influence entrepreneurial behavior, with business opportunity recognition playing a crucial mediating role. Among these factors, financial status evaluation emerged as the most significant variable affecting entrepreneurial behavior. This finding demonstrates that an entrepreneur's ability to identify and evaluate business opportunities significantly impacts their entrepreneurial preparation and execution. Conversely, problem-solving competencies showed no direct effect on entrepreneurial behavior nor a mediating effect through business opportunity recognition. The traditional Chinese culture emphasizing guanxi (relationships) highlights the greater importance of interpersonal competencies over problem-solving or digital utilization competencies in business success. Therefore, to promote online platform entrepreneurship, it is essential to provide systematic financial education and continuous entrepreneurial support, enable networking and interpersonal skill‘s development programs, and offer practical support measures considering the impact of entrepreneurial environmental factors such as financial status evaluation on entrepreneurial behavior.

Resilience in Adversity: COVID-19 Pandemic Challenges in Diminishing Entrepreneurial Intentions and Business Startups

In this study, the researchers explore the effects of COVID-19-related challenges, such as fear and anxiety about COVID-19, the uncertainty of COVID-19, and the recognition of business opportunities for entrepreneurial intentions and business startups. This study used quantitative methods and based their findings on 278 usable samples collected from Egyptian entrepreneurs. Employing the Structural Equation Model (SEM) through SmartPLS4 shows that fear and anxiety arising from the COVID-19 pandemic harm entrepreneurial intentions and business startups. Moreover, the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recognition of business opportunities positively and significantly impact entrepreneurial intentions and business startups. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, this study’s findings support psychological well-being, reduce uncertainty, foster the recognition of business opportunities, and implement supportive policies to promote entrepreneurial intentions and successful business startups.

<div class="WordSection1"><p><em>The biggest problems faced by home industry players are difficulties in marketing products and lack of skills in using technology as well as a lack of product quality assurance which causes difficulties in accessing a wider market. The aim of this service is to improve the performance of creative home industry players through innovation capabilities and product branding through technological literacy and recognition of business opportunities. The method used in this service starts from the planning process, implementing activities and monitoring evaluation. In the process of implementing activities in the form of providing training using lecture and discussion methods as well as mentoring to participants. This program was carried out by a team of ITSK Lecturers and Students Sugeng Hartono with the target being household food industry players who are members of ASEMKESUR in Solo Raya. Key Determinants of Women’s Entrepreneurial Intention and Behavior: The Role of Business Opportunity Recognition and Need for Achievement

The focus of this study is to investigate the major factors influencing entrepreneurial intent and behavior, by addressing the role of entrepreneurial education, business opportunity recognition, and the need for achievement. The research data were collected online using a self-administered questionnaire among 148 Moroccan women having completed an entrepreneurship training program. The data analysis using a PLS-SEM provided evidence of the positive impact of entrepreneurial education on entrepreneurial self-efficacy and PBC. Likewise, the findings supported the direct impact of subjective norms and entrepreneurial self-efficacy on entrepreneurial attitude. Furthermore, entrepreneurial attitude, business opportunity recognition, and the need for achievement were identified as predictors of entrepreneurial intent, leading to enhanced entrepreneurial behavior. These results highlight a number of useful practical recommendations for public policy-makers on how to stimulate and encourage entrepreneurship initiatives among women.

Empirical Review of Entrepreneurial Youth Empowerment Initiatives in South-Western Nigeria

Youth empowerment prepares candidates for new venture initiation by transferring knowledge and developing relevant skills that improve the self-efficacy and effectiveness of the potential entrepreneur. Entrepreneurial opportunity recognition is a relevant vehicle for economic development contributing to youth employment worldwide. Over a 50-year period, the Federal, State Government and Private Institutions have established many initiatives with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship. Examples of these Federal youth empowerment initiatives are N-power, Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWin), Youth Empowering People (YEP), Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS), African Youth Empowerment Nigeria (AYEN), TraderMoni, Youth Initiative for Sustainable Agriculture in Nigeria (YISAN) and Presidential Youth Entrepreneurship Support (P-YES). The entrepreneurial components of the youth empowerment programmes of the state government are merely underplayed. Youth empowerment coordinators have not been able to engage empowerment beneficiaries to create and connect entrepreneurial components into an interactive and sustainable business start-up. The study adopts empirical study explored the entrepreneurial youth empowerment initiatives of youths to become self-employed after their initiatives from various empowerment schemes. Qualitative research is concerned with gaining an in-depth understanding of human issues. Findings show that business opportunity recognition influences business sustainability of small-scale businesses. This implies that impact of identifying business opportunities, entrepreneurial knowledge, spotting a particular business industry, transforming business ideas into reality and empowerment initiatives structures influence business sustainability of youth empowerment candidates. The study concludes that entrepreneurial empowerment initiatives have to prepare candidates for new venture opportunities by transferring knowledge and developing relevant skills. The study recommended that state government and private organizations (empowerment organizers) need to create an environment where youth empowerment beneficiaries can identify business opportunities. This will improve the performance by improving business sustainability.

Impacts of Argentina’s crisis in 2018/2019 on students’ entrepreneurial characteristics during the pre-start-up process

ABSTRACT University students have been surveyed regarding entrepreneurial characteristics before and during the Argentine politico-economic crisis in 2018/2019. In 2019 the country’s unemployment rate reached its peak since 2006. During crises self-employment is considered more often, and higher rates of start-ups creating high-skilled labor could counter Argentina’s innovation gap. The during-crisis students are more necessity-driven to business creation than their stronger opportunity-driven pre-crisis counterparts. Students as potential founders of innovative start-ups require demand-oriented entrepreneurship support at their universities, which enables continuous individual learning processes creating fundamental entrepreneurial qualifications and facilitating business opportunity recognition and assessment. Currently, a promising starting point is inciting the students’ pull motives to business creation.

Sustainable Circular Economy in the Wood Construction Industry: A Business Opportunity Perspective

This study aims to explore the main drivers of recognizing a circular economy business opportunity. In this multiple case study with six entrepreneurs from the wood construction industry is a relevant part of the circular economy because its essential component is a sustainable and renewable material (trees/wood) that reduces carbon emissions. This study contributes to previous research by showing that six traditional drivers influence the entrepreneur’s recognition of business opportunities: environmental conditions, social capital, prior knowledge, systematic search, cognition and entrepreneurial alertness. Moreover, they are intertwined in the complex and processual phenomenon known as business opportunity. Furthermore, for the drivers of sustainable opportunity recognition, prior knowledge on environment and altruism are critical. The recognition of opportunity is not solely based on any of the individual drivers; rather, it relies mostly on continuous interaction with the network when the entrepreneur is creating a business opportunity.

Sustainable Entrepreneurship for Business Opportunity Recognition: Analysis of an Awareness Questionnaire among Organisations

An important challenge for the future is focusing on sustainability in life and business. The three elements of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social), defined in 17 factors by the United Nations (UN) as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), may, therefore, be the main drivers of business competitiveness and opportunity recognition. The main aim of the article is to identify the awareness level of sustainability and sustainable development goals in the context of business opportunity areas by analysing the results of a survey of organisations in six countries (Finland, Slovakia, Italy, Austria, Spain, and Turkey). A multilingual questionnaire, administered in six participating countries, was used as a collection tool to determine the organisation’s level of awareness regarding the SDGs. A research questionnaire was filled in by 238 respondents, providing a cross-cultural view of their attitudes, knowledge, and future interest in sustainability and the SDGs. The obtained results indicate differences in the approach to sustainability issues, the scope of knowledge, interest, competencies in sustainable development and SDGs, and the content of implementation of sustainability and SDGs in organisations in different sectors, regions and countries. Further statistical evaluation of the research hypotheses states the significant relationship between the two variables: sustainable strategy and the designation of a responsible employee in each organisation rs = 0.677 (α = 0.05). It is essential to eliminate the gap in the cross-cultural approach and knowledge in engaging with sustainable strategy and its implementation in current and future organisation activities in the context of sustainability and SDGs, in order to enhance opportunities for the growth of sustainability-focused entrepreneurship across different sectors and countries.

The Relationship between Entrepreneurship Education and Entrepreneurial Intentions of College Students in China: Focus on Mediating Effect of Entrepreneurial Opportunity Recognition and Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy

Entrepreneurship education (EE) plays a significant role on improving the entrepreneurial intention and willingness of youth and future entrepreneurs. This study aims to identify the effects of entrepreneurship education on the entrepreneurial intention of students in higher education institutions in China. A structural equation is used to analyze data collected from 406 Chinese students from business and management majors across 5 universities. Entrepreneurial opportunity recognition and self-efficacy were introduced as the mediating variable in this model. Results showed that 1) EE has a positive effect on the entrepreneurial intentions of the students, 2) partly mediating effects of entrepreneurial opportunity recognition and mediating effect of self-efficacy were found between Entrepreneurship education (EE) and entrepreneurial intentions (EI). The findings suggest that educational institutions should place a greater emphasis on entrepreneurship education and the recognition of business opportunities in order to promote entrepreneurial intent among students. Although a longitudinal study may be necessary to understand the long-term effect of entrepreneurship education, through empirical evidence this study demonstrates that the perception of entrepreneurship education among Chinese college students significantly influences entrepreneurial self-efficacy and indirectly influences entrepreneurial intention.

International business opportunity recognition and development

PurposeUnderstanding how international business opportunities (IBOs) are recognized and developed is critical to the study of international entrepreneurship.Design/methodology/approachWe draw on entrepreneurial cognition research broadly and the entrepreneurial judgment perspective specifically to develop a model of the recognition and development of IBOs by considering three theoretically important sets of drivers – social networks, international experience and a proactive mindset. We use a sample of 92 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to test the model empirically.FindingsWe find robust support. Entrepreneurial judgment surrounding IBOs and uncertain international business environments entails tapping social networks, international experience and a proactive mindset to both recognize third-person opportunities for someone as well as to act upon and develop IBOs as first-person opportunities from which a focal firm can profit.Originality/valueConceptually and empirically, we peer inside the black box of IBO entrepreneurial judgment processes by jointly evaluating the abstract recognition of third-person opportunities as well as the concrete actions and interactions that develop the IBOs into first-person opportunities.

The Mediating Effect of Emotion on Entrepreneurship Education and Business Opportunity Recognition

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of entrepreneurial emotion on relationship between entrepreneurship education and business opportunity recognition. Entrepreneurship process begins when an entrepreneur recognizes a business opportunity that involves various emotions throughout the process. Although various activities and entrepreneurship programs are carried out in universities, the involvements of students and graduates in business start-ups are still small. The main factor is the failure to leverage potential business opportunities, which in turn, leads to the stability of emotion’s reliance. A total of 152 of final year students participated in this study. The data were collected from questionnaires, and the hypotheses were tested using Partial Least Square - Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicated that entrepreneurship education, emotion and opportunity recognition were significantly related. It was also found that entrepreneurial emotion partially mediated the relationship between entrepreneurship education and opportunity recognition. The findings have confirmed that although entrepreneurship education helps improve students’ capabilities to adapt to new environments, and recognizes the potential of business opportunities, a stable emotion is crucial throughout the entire entrepreneurship process.

Entrepreneurial behaviour: The effects of the fear and anxiety of Covid-19 and business opportunity recognition

Objective: The major objectives of the article were to explore the effects of the fear and anxiety of Covid-19 and business opportunity recognition on start-up self-efficacy, entrepreneurial intention, and behaviour, as well as to test entrepreneurial intention-behaviour association. Research Design & Methods: The study was performed by means of an online survey questionnaire conducted on 405 students at a Vietnamese university. The survey questionnaire was developed based on prior research. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was utilised to test the research model and hypotheses. Findings: The results illustrated that the fear and anxiety of Covid-19 have a negative impact on start-up self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention, while business opportunity recognition is strongly and positively correlated with entrepreneurial self-efficacy, entrepreneurial intention, and behaviour. In addition, entrepreneurial intention is found to be the most important antecedent to predict actual start-up behaviour whereas entrepreneurial intention significantly mediates the association between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial behaviour. Implications & Recommendations: The study offers practical contributions for both universities and policymakers to foster youths' entrepreneurial activities and manage the negative outcome of Covid-19 on students' mental health. Contribution & Value Added: This research contributes to the entrepreneurship literature by addressing the notable gap when testing the linkages between entrepreneurial intention and behaviour. Furthermore, the finding confirms that the fear and anxiety of Covid-19 can decrease entrepreneurial self-efficacy, intention, and behaviour, while business opportunity recognition fosters entrepreneurial activities.

Rekognisi Terhadap Peluang Bisnis Online Melalui Media Sosial dan Hubungannya dengan Minat Berwirausaha: Studi Kasus Mahasiswa Politeknik Negeri Bandung

The trend of social media use has been increasing and encompass almost all activities covering political and economic aspect of a country, including in Indonesia.  In terms of social, cultural as well as economic aspects, the use of social media has shifted the pattern and tradition of how people buy products. This phenomenon would become business opportunity to be identified, captured and made into reality by young people especially by university students. This research is to uncover how far the students could recognize online business opportunity through social media and how it can affect on entrepreneurial students’ intentions. The research used quantitative method and use google form to collect data. The research takes place in Politeknik Negeri Bandung (POLBAN) and students of POLBAN as samples that taken through convenience sampling. The research uses descriptive analysis to analyse the data and regression analysis to find out the effect of students’ recognition of business opportunities on the students’ entrepreneurial intentions. The descriptive analysis shows that respectively the highest mean of students’ perception is on trust of social media, benefit of social media, and the lowest is on confidentiality and ease of use. The research also shows that there is a positive and significant influence of students’ recognition of online business opportunity on their entrepreneurial intentions as much as 41.5% and the rest should be caused by other factors.

A Hybrid of Cognitive Entrepreneurial Training and Education and Their Impact on Business Opportunity Recognition in Thailand: Moderating Role of Entrepreneurial Passion

Aim of the study: The aim of this paper was to analyze the impact of cognitive entrepreneurial training and education and their impact on business opportunity recognition in Thailand with the moderating role of entrepreneurial passion. This study has four main objectives such as to study the impact of cognitive entrepreneurial training on business opportunity recognition accuracy, to study the impact of entrepreneurial education on business opportunity recognition accuracy, to analyze the role of entrepreneurial passion between cognitive entrepreneurial training and business opportunity recognition accuracy and to analyze the role of entrepreneurial passion between entrepreneurial education and business opportunity recognition accuracy. In the era of rapid development and growth, entrepreneurial education is extremely vital for students. Entrepreneurial passion as well as play an important role in recognizing business opportunities. The process of experiential education facilitates potential business-persons to learn how to identify business opportunities, through developing and building their framework of (Cognitive Opportunity Identification), and through improving their entrepreneurship skills through entrepreneurial learning and education. Methods: Quantitative method and cross sectional time horizon have been used by the researcher in this paper. The researcher gathered data from Thai students. Findings: The study findings suggest that hypothesis 1, 2, 3 and 4, all are accepted. Implications: The programs of entrepreneurial education should provide theoretical understandings to students, facilitating them to make better sense of their pertinent experiences and to transmute them into understanding and knowledge.

Mobilizing Business Opportunity Identification Through Entrepreneurial Education in Thailand with the Mediation of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy and Orientation

This research emphasizes on mobilizing the business opportunity identification when the level of entrepreneurial education rises in Thailand. The study also focuses on the mediating impact of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial orientation on the connection between EE and business opportunity identification. The current research is quantitative in nature and data was gathered by self-administrated questionnaire survey. Data of the research was collected from 318 respondents and examined through SPSS software by means of regression analysis. The regression analyses showed that a high level of the EE also leads to greater business opportunity recognition. This study outcomes also demonstrated that self-efficacy and orientation fully mediates the link among both the variables. Entrepreneurial self-efficacy performs as an individual resource that assists entrepreneurs to get high level of entrepreneurial education and business opportunity identification.

Designing a comprehensive model of entrepreneurial university in the science and technology parks

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the entrepreneurial university and to develop a theoretical framework relating entrepreneurship education in the third generation of universities. Therefore, the future research could be carried out to identify and apply the presented model. Design/methodology/approach – In terms of objective, this study is considered as an empirical one, and the research methodology is descriptive-correlative type. Sample population consists of 130 knowledge-based firms in the science and technology parks. In total, 100 knowledge-based firms were selected by using a stratified random sampling. The analysis of data obtained from the questionnaires and both descriptive and inferential parts was done through the application of SPSS, structural equation modeling technique and Smart PLS 3 software. Findings – The results suggested the positive and significant effect of the organizational, individual, institutional, and environmental factors on entrepreneurial university in the science and technology parks. Practical implications – The application of the research model provides an avenue for the practitioners to design accelerates and creative science and technology parks focussing on the commercialization education, entrepreneurial intuition and marketing to students and innovators. Social implications – The theoretical framework of the current study offers a different way forward for policy makers in thinking about those factors that may be critical for success of entrepreneurship education. Policy makers, in general can provide infrastructures to launch third generation of universities, entrepreneurial university, for young generation to increase effectiveness of academic education and to provide the prospect of a more business opportunity recognition. Originality/value – This research contributes to the existing literature in the field of entrepreneurship education. So far, a comprehensive model has been substantially neglected with respect to the entrepreneurial university in the science and technology parks. This new framework can be used to inform thinking and research design in the area of entrepreneurship education to promote entrepreneurial university thought.

Prototype models of opportunity recognition and the decision to launch a new venture

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to obtain evidence concerning the basic dimensions included in cognitive prototypes pertaining to opportunity recognition and decision to launch a new venture; identifying the underlying dimensions of both prototypes – the cognitive frameworks current or nascent entrepreneurs employ in performing these important tasks.Design/methodology/approach– The bi-dimensional models were tested in a sample of 284 founder entrepreneurs, using a 48-item questionnaire. It was used as structural equation confirmatory factor analysis to compare fit indices of uni-dimensional second-order and third-order bi-dimensional models of business opportunity and decision to launch a venture.Findings– Results support the bi-dimensional models and offer support that both prototypes include two basic dimensions. For the business opportunity prototype these are viability and distinctiveness while for the decision to launch a new venture, the basic dimensions are feasibility and motivational aspects.Research limitations/implications– These results help to further clarify the nature of the cognitive frameworks individuals use to identify potential opportunities and reach an initial decision about whether to pursue their development. Uncovering the cognitive functioning of opportunity recognition and decision to exploit it, allow individuals to recognize opportunities easier and successfully; and to make more accurate and effective decisions.Practical implications– Knowing the basic dimensions of opportunity and decision-making prototypes contributes to develop effective skills with respect to business opportunity recognition among students enrolled in entrepreneurship programs. These surveys can be used for self-assessment and also for investors, tutors, and entrepreneurship agents in order to help evaluate features of business opportunities and decision to launch a venture.Originality/value– This study embraces a conceptual contribution, proposing a different model of the business opportunity and decision to exploit prototypes, and it extends Baron and Ensley (2006) previous work, to another important step in the entrepreneurial process – the decision to develop an identified opportunity through the launch of a new venture.

Developing a Creative-Cognitive Model of Entrepreneurial Alertness to Business Opportunities

A creative-cognitive perspective is used in this study to explore alertness to business opportunities in order to develop a model of business opportunity recognition. It is assumed that the elements constituting this opportunity creation are entrepreneur’s creative cognitive process, internal creative qualities, environmental conditions supporting or hindering creativity and interaction of these elements, and that they have a significant impact on the innovativeness of the business opportunity. Through the development of the model an aim is made to clarify why some entrepreneurs create novel ideas while others just copy the old and used ones.

Exploring the Critical Success Factors for Developing and Implementing A Predictive Capability in Business

Predictive capability (when implemented in a business context) refers to the early recognition of business opportunities and threats, improved customer intimacy, and agile reaction to changes in the business environment. In this article, we propose that developing and implementing a predictive capability depends on a change process that is only implementable under certain conditions. Based on a review of the research literature and interviews, three critical success factors relating to the successful implementation of the relevant change process were identified. They are (1) identifying the change drivers; (2) organizing vision for the change; and (3) the capacity to execute change. These three factors were further divided into 11 dimensions, which are as follows: (1a) increasing networking; (1b) changing customer needs; (1c) increasing elements of the knowledge economy; (1d) development of the information technology; (2a) strategic benefits; (2b) transactional benefits; (2c) informational benefits; (3a) strategic capabilities; (3b) management capabilities; (3c) knowledge capabilities; and (3d) operational capabilities. The findings suggest that Finnish manufacturing companies are willing to start the change toward developing and implementing a predictive capability. However, they are currently only at the stage of orienting toward this new managerial paradigm. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
