Enhancing Your Teaching Methods: An Information Literacy-Based Approach to Developing Course Assignments

As information becomes more abundant and accessible, today’s workers will find it critical to develop the soft skills of information literacy. Prior to graduation, students need regular practice evaluating the credibility of common business information sources. To support these goals, we propose and describe a teaching methodology that borrows from the field of librarianship and uses concepts, mindsets, and practices from the study of information literacy. In addition to providing an information literacy-based framework for use when developing course assignments, we offer an extended example that makes use of this approach.

Tailoring competitive information sources to the sequence of dynamic capabilities

AbstractDynamic capabilities are central to firms' strategic decision-making and have received increasing attention in recent years due, in part, to the development of the information society. This research explores how web-based and human information sources interact and advance the development of dynamic capabilities. We use a mixed-methods approach executed in two studies. Study 1 reports insights gleaned from in-depth interviews with 12 senior managers. Study 2 provides the findings from a survey completed by 139 senior managers. The analysis indicates that the use of web-based and human information sources facilitates all dynamic capabilities types – sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring. Furthermore, sensing mediates the effects of the information sources on seizing and reconfiguring. This research highlights the strategic potential of using business information sources to advance dynamic capabilities while differentiating between the most commonly used information sources and inspecting their individual and synergistic effects on the advancement of dynamic capabilities.

Credit Risk Early Warning of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Based on Blockchain Trusted Data

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are now growing rapidly and playing an important role in the development of the national economy. As the economy grows, the contradiction between the credit risk of SMEs and the credit risk early warning mechanism of traditional supply chain financing has become increasingly important. In response to the issues of a single source of business information, the high investment cost of the existing early risk early warning mechanism, etc., from a commercial bank credit risk management perspective, this paper proposes to build an SMEs credit risk early warning system based on reliable blockchain data. The reliability of the data obtained is assessed utilising a hierarchical analysis and a vague overall judgement method. The results show that the use of blockchain technology can enhance the credibility and accuracy of the data, which provides a data guarantee for more rapid risk alert.

Information activity: phenomenon interpretation in the context of business

In the article the phenomenon of information activity in the context of the business sphere is analyzed. Information business is characterized as a multifunctional phenomenon. The concept of "information activity" from the stand point of its types and purposes is revealed. Different directions of information activity implementation in business are defined. The concept of information needs is interpreted. A unique algorithm for meeting the information needs of the company and the company is proposed. The information activity of the enterprise is understood as the satisfaction of its information requests for the implementation of its functioning, as well as a means of building internal organizational relationships. Information activities from the stand point of creating an appropriate information product and establishing relationships with various groups of the public, including consumers, are presented. Two groups of the public for business organizations (external and internal) are described. The concept of business information as a component of the business process is presented. Types of business information sources are represented, information resource practices are covered, as well as possible options for meeting information needs. The importance of the concept of creating e-government — e-Government — as an important modern information resource is pointed out. Two levels of information flows in business companies are identified. The media and, inparticular, corporate media are described as a powerful channel for information activities in the direction of communication with consumers. Endogenous and exogenous vectors of satisfaction of information needs of business structures are revealed, the process of realization of information inquiries of the company is presented as dichotomous.

News Analytics for Business Sentiment Suggestion

Business and economics news has become one of the factors businesses consider when making decisions. However, the exponential increase in the availability of business information sources on the internet makes it more difficult for entrepreneurs to keep up with and extract useful insights from many news articles. Although many preceding works focused on the sentiment extracted in the news, the results were intended for everyone. The sentiments based on a user's queries are needed to provide customized service. Hence, this paper proposed a system integrated into a chatbot to automatically understand users' queries and recommend sentiments based on news articles. The main objective is to provide entrepreneurs, especially those considering international trade and investment, with the sentiments embodied in the latest news articles to help them keep up with the business and economic trends relevant to them. The methodology is based on deep learning and transfer learning. A pre-trained deep learning model was fine-tuned for natural language processing tasks to perform sentiment analysis in news articles. A survey questionnaire was used to measure the effectiveness of the system. The survey result showed that most users agreed with the predicted sentiments from the system.

The results of the sociological survey conducted in 2020 proved that the specifics of youth entrepreneurship in Saratov is directly related to socio-demographic characteristics. There are predominantly male-dominated business activities such as industry, construction and transport. The age largely determines the sphere of interests, values and experience of the individual, influencing the choice of business. For the younger age it is trade, for the older generation it is the service sector and other areas. The motivational core of the young entrepreneurs depends on their gender identity. For women, they are internal motives: the desire to do what they like, independence; for men, they are external motives: increased income and public recognition. Motivation is determined by the general orientation of the person, which depends on the age and life circumstances. In the age group from 18 to 22 the desire for independence prevails. In the group from 23 to 26 the main motivating factor is the desire to do what they like. In the 27–34 age group the income growth is the main motive. The popularity of various sources of business information is also greatly based on the age. The confidence in the various courses and trainings is usually demonstrated by younger cohorts. As they grow older, their popularity declines. The representatives of older categories of entrepreneurs trust the Internet and their friends more. There is a direct correlation between the age and the use of bank lending services. The older the entrepreneur is, the more often he/she resorts to the use of bank lending, as he/she is more stable in life and has more opportunities to use this service and further repay the loan. The problems of young entrepreneurs are significantly correlated with the age or gender, although they operate in the same conditions of the existing reality, depending on the economic and political state of the region. The experience of young entrepreneurs which depends on the age is reflected in the self-assessment of their business. The older the individual is, the more positively he/she evaluates his work.

Accounting information as the basis for strategic management of agricultural enterprises

A key place in economic theory belongs to learning about the position of immediate creators, i.e. producers of goods in every socio-economic formation. This position and all relations in production and society depend significantly on the historical form of production of excess work and the way of appropriating excess work. Therefore, for analysis of the modern way of commodity agroproduction, it is necessary to dispose of information that is the basis for decision-making at the strategic level. This type of information is characterized by the accounting information system as one of the main sources of business information. For the subject of this work, we will take the modern way of agroproduction and creation of excess value, which in recent times, especially after the global economic crisis, is gaining increasing significance in both economic theory and economic reality.

Web Trends: A valuable tool for business research

Web search data are a valuable source of business and economic information. Previous studies have utilized Google Trends web search data for economic forecasting. We expand this work by creating an algorithm to combine and aggregate search volume data, so that the resulting data are both consistent over time and consistent between data series. We give a brand equity example, where Google Trends is used to create several brand equity series for 100 top-ranked brands. We validate these series by correlating them with the Interbrand brand equity index and by testing how well the series components predict company revenue. We give a managerial business research example, where Google Trends data are implemented as a measure of consumer “buzz” and is used to improve pre-release predictions of movie revenue.

Public Library as a Source of Business Information for Small-Scale Business Enterprises in Nigeria

ABSTRACT The study investigated public library as a source of business information for small-scale business enterprises in Nigeria. Six states in the Southwest region of Nigeria were used for the study, while purposive sampling was used to select forty small-scale businesses from each of the states, which brought the population of the study to 240. As a survey research, a questionnaire was used for data collection. The findings of the study revealed that information on sources of business funding was the major information need of small-scale businesses, while books were the most available information sources in the public library. Based on the findings, the study recommends among others, that government should provide more funding to support small-scale businesses; and that public libraries should acquire more information sources particularly those on sources of business funding, to complement available ones. The study contributes to literature and its empirical data will be useful to policymakers on how to reposition public libraries for effective provision of business information to small-scale business people.

Outstanding Business Reference Sources 2019

Each year, the Business Information Sources Committee of BRASS selects the outstanding business reference sources published since May of the previous year. This year, the committee reviewed fourteen entries; of these, one was designated as “Outstanding” and four as “Notable.” To qualify for the award, the title must meet the conventional definition of reference: a work compiled specifically to supply information on a certain subject or group of subjects in a form that will facilitate its ease of use. The works are examined for the following: authority and reputation of the publisher, author, or editor; accuracy; appropriate bibliography; organization; comprehensiveness; value of the content; currency; distinctive addition; ease of use for the intended purpose; quality and accuracy of index; and quality and usefulness of graphics and illustrations. Additional criteria for electronic reference titles are accuracy of links, search features, stability of content, and graphic design. Works selected must be suitable for medium to large-size academic and public libraries.

Analysis of Socio-Culture for the Use of Instagram among Students

The use of Instagram from only sharing photos or videos and interacting with users has become a place for personal branding such as business events, information sources, and publications to get appreciation. Among students, the purpose of using Instagram can also change from the purpose of initial account creation. Different goals can be influenced by the needs and suitability of media content. To examine the socio-culture of Instagram usage patterns among students, research was conducted using a data collection method using a questionnaire. The results show the suitability of content and objectives do not affect the intensity of use, but affect the intensity of data upload. Appropriateness of content affects the choice of Instagram users to take advantage of privacy features. Based on these two things, it can be concluded that the intensity and use of privacy features affect personal branding, because the intensity of the influence of the level of communication of users with the audience, while the use of privacy features will affect the level of audience curiosity towards user data.

Laying a foundation for library liaisonship: A business librarian case study

This article traces the efforts of a newly hired business liaison librarian at a mid-sized public university in conducting background research on those served as well as identifying relevant resources and services. The librarian examined four areas: the university, the College of Business, available business information sources, and library instruction. Emphasis was placed on indirect information gathering methods such as reviewing department webpages. The information collected was evaluated and a Liaison Information Document (LID) was developed to help guide future liaison efforts. The methods provided combined with the LID template may help other librarians, especially new hires, develop effective liaison programs.

Taking care of business (before class): Information literacy in a flipped classroom

This case study presents the revision of an upper-division one-shot instruction session to include an online tutorial that introduces students to business information sources prior to the library session. In order to complete the assignment and prepare for the library session, students are prompted to find specific information using the given resource, and then consider questions regarding the information retrieved. Students in a 3000-level business writing class responded positively to the activity while providing a good amount of material to inform further iterations of the assignment.

Information Behavior of Financial Professionals in the Arabian Gulf Region

ABSTRACTThis article describes information finding practices of financial professionals from five countries in the Arabian Gulf Region. Participants reported company information as the most important type of information, while other main types include country information, information on investment opportunities, and cross-linkages with operational facilities. Wikis, blogs, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook were among the frequently used social media. Need for subscriptions for some sources appeared to be the main concern hindering information finding. Frequently used business information sources should be accessible to financial professionals on regular basis through in-house facilities or outsourcing. Accessibility of information and enhanced information literacy will result in considerable savings for business organizations.

The Signal Economy: How to target new revenues through predictive analytics

You may have had an opportunity to catch one of my presentations on The Signal Economy at a recent conference or symposium, or browsed through my presentation slides online. You may have gotten a general grasp of what “signal” means and how a world filled with data being generated online every day by trillions of sensors, mobile devices and Web publishing tools is creating what I call “The Signal Economy” – the generation, collecting, organizing and analysis of signals that drive economic activity predictively at unprecedented scale. Well, that all sounds great at first blush, I assume, otherwise you’d probably not be reading this right now. But what does it really mean to people who are involved in the hard day-to-day work of trying to drive their organization’s revenue streams towards more profitable goals? Is The Signal Economy just another buzz phrase dreamed up by an industry analyst, a fad that will pass away, or is it really a new opportunity for considering how to organize your operations for greater success? My argument that I’ll outline in this paper is that The Signal Economy is far from a fad and is in fact a huge economic opportunity for any organization. I will address most specifically organizations that have a stake in their success through creating and using media and business information sources as a key component in driving their operations. This means not only publishers and media companies, but also any organization that uses information from inside and outside their organization to drive critical decision-making for delivering products and services. In other words, if you’re in pretty much any professional role, listen up – The Signal Economy is about you. You’re either creating signal or consuming signal – or you should be if you want money and success to flow your way.

Objective development of applied information technology collection business information in INTERNET

This article examines the search, collection and processing business information. The main problem is a search for sources of business information. The main groups of sources were identified: legislation, reporting, infrastructure, media and Internet. Internet today is the main source of any kind of information, but there is still the actual problem of data retrieval, that meets the criteria of quality business information. This paper analyzes the requirements for such sources. The criteria for the quality of business information have been identified, among which the most important are accuracy, timeliness, completeness, verifiability, fairness, etc. The detailed analysis of the enterprise data flows resulted in the formulation of information technologies development for the collection and business information storage problem, which would take into account all the basic information in the enterprise, as well as additional sources. The basic requirements that must be met by developed system: adaptability, portability, usability, etc. The present paper identifies the stages of collecting information, set goals and objectives for the solutions. For each task of collecting and storing business information from a variety of sources have been defined the mathematical tools for its program implementation

XBRL and open data for global financial ecosystems: A linked data approach

Information professionals performing business activity related investigative analysis must routinely associate data from a diverse range of Web based general-interest business and financial information sources. XBRL has become an integral part of the financial data landscape. At the same time, Open Data initiatives have contributed relevant financial, economic, and business data to the pool of publicly available information on the Web but the use of XBRL in combination with Open Data remains at an early state of realisation. In this paper we argue that Linked Data technology, created for Web scale information integration, can accommodate XBRL data and make it easier to combine it with open datasets. This can provide the foundations for a global data ecosystem of interlinked and interoperable financial and business information with the potential to leverage XBRL beyond its current regulatory and disclosure role. We outline the uses of Linked Data technologies to facilitate XBRL consumption in conjunction with non-XBRL Open Data, report on current activities and highlight remaining challenges in terms of information consolidation faced by both XBRL and Web technologies.

Perceptions of practicing and prospective women executives from India about Indian business newspapers

An increasing presence of women in the premier professions in India in the past two decades has led to an increase in the requirement for business information by women (Gaur, Bhattacharjee, & Pandey, 2010). In addition, the National Readership Study (2006) shows an increase in the readership of English newspapers by women. This study is an attempt to explore the perception of women executives about the business newspapers published in India. The data of the study were collected through an online survey amongst women executives (N =111) and women students (N =83) of postgraduate management studies1 to ascertain the preferred sources of business information, time spent reading business newspaper, the perception about various aspects of business newspaper read by the respondent and level of importance accorded to and satisfaction with specific dimensions of business newspaper read by the respondent. Descriptive statistics are used to analyze and interpret the data. The findings have implications towards making the business newspaper more gender-friendly.
