Evaluating face-to-face and online flipped learning on performance and satisfaction in marketing and communication students

The research evaluates the impact of face-to-face and online flipped learning (OFL) on the academic performance in students of single-degree (SD) and double-degree (DD), compared to that achieved in the traditional methodology. A descriptive, quasi-experimental, cross-sectional, quantitative study was carried out with a sample of 223 university marketing and communication students. The study was conducted in three phases: before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Results align with previous studies, which find that flipped learning (FL) face-to-face yields higher performance than traditional methodology. Like other studies, the highest scores in asynchronous activities were found for DD students. However, this study reveals that those adopting FL, both online and face-to-face, demonstrated superior academic performance compared to SD students using the traditional method in practical assessments. Notably, DD students who used OFL methodology outperformed their SD peers who used the traditional method in the overall subject score and in the synchronous and asynchronous activities. Furthermore, although modality did not influence the ratings of FL methodology; DD students who experienced this methodology online or face-to-face reported more positively on their attitudes, perceptions, interactions, academic results, and perceived satisfaction than SD students. These findings contribute to understanding of how the adoption of diverse learning methods and modalities influence the performance, attitudes, perceptions, interactions, results, and satisfaction of SD and DD students in the fields of marketing and communication. In conclusion, university business education institutions can enhance student performance and satisfaction by expanding DDs offerings and integrating active learning methods.

Effect of Information Literacy on Academic Performance of Business Students in Pakistan

Abstract The present research investigated the effect of information literacy on the academic performance of business students enrolled at the top seven business education institutions from urban Sindh, Pakistan. A quantitative research approach using a cross-sectional survey was used to conduct this investigation. The data were collected from 385 business students enrolled in different degree programs using a questionnaire. The recruitment of the participants was done through proportionate stratified simple random and systematic sampling techniques, with the results indicating that business students are information literate. In addition, the information literacy of business students appeared as a positive predictor of their academic performance. These results may inform policy and practice to improve business education and might be useful for business educators, policymakers, librarians, and business accrediting bodies (e.g., National Business Education Accreditation Council and Higher Education Commission) in designing a needs-based information literacy instruction program and curriculum for business students of all levels for better human-information interaction. This study contributed to the existing literature on the effectiveness of information literacy in academia, particularly on business students’ academic performance, as no such research was available in the existing literature at the time of writing this article, specifically from the South-Asian region.

Determinants in advancement of teaching and learning in higher education: In special reference to management education

The pandemic has significantly impacted the education sector, and technology has played a crucial role in education delivery. This study aims to identify factors that enhance the education and learning of management students in the post-pandemic era. The authors utilized an exploratory research approach and gathered data from three prominent business education institutions in India through a survey. They performed an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify factors contributing to effective teaching and learning. The study findings propose that educational establishments should prioritize enhancing technical support, faculty capacity building, course designs, and social support to ensure their effective teaching and learning approach. The authors have also provided recommendations for each construct for higher education institutions. The insights gained from this study can benefit management institutes and educational establishments in developing their teaching and learning plans in the post-COVID era. This study's contribution lies in identifying critical factors that can enhance management students' education and learning, thereby improving the quality of education in higher education institutions.

A SEM-based approach towards the Utilization of Technology and its Relationship to the performance of private business education institutions

Gartner sees device meshes and mesh apps as a future strategic technology trend because they can anticipate people's needs based on their historical data and then provide the services needed or service innovation to endorse their activity engagement. Many theories, however, have found that intrinsic human motivation, rather than external tools, gets people to take action. This is why the authors of this study construct a theoretical foundation by bringing together the existing logic and theories to inquire into how potential future technologies might provide advantages to society. It combines the motivation theory (primarily task technology theory) and the task-technology fit (TTF) model that examines how people use technology to accomplish specific tasks. It distinguishes between users' technology-enabled and technology-dependent actions. It concludes that focusing too much on technology's role without considering users' motivations would give a clearer picture of how technology is used. According to a 2018 study (Ming-Hsiung Hsiao, A study's conceptual and technology-dependent user behavior toward device mesh and mesh app), users' attitudes and actions toward these technologies constantly evolve. The study tests the Utilization of Technology and its Relationship to the performance of private business education institutions.

US Accreditation as a World-Class Education Quality Indicator

On the turning point of European and world history, it is extremely important to unveil and effectively utilize the potential of effective high-quality education to make the future better for generations to come. Higher education quality management through accreditation has a long history of development in the United States, and time-proven standards, stimulating accredited institutions to continually improve academic quality. 
 The concepts, systems, principles and practices of accreditation arouse in the United States out of the need to meet the demands for quality, and evolved over decades, to form a coherent set of standards and frameworks of continuous improvement in all meaningful directions of the educational institutions’ life, striving for teaching excellence and high learning outcomes. At present, accreditation principles and processes, as exemplified by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) programmatic accreditation, are implemented in the US and numerous countries of the world, to ensure high standard and continuous improvement of business education quality, to raise the competitiveness of educational institutions in response to the expectations of public (primarily, students and their families), governments, employers, universities/colleges, academics, and broader communities. 
 This study establishes the correlation of the quality management system via ACBSP accreditation with the continuous improvement of business education quality. This study also provides statistical evidence that the application of quality management principles at institutions of higher education with accredited business programs did result in the association with enhanced student learning outcomes.
 Higher education quality management leads to higher employability of the institution’s graduates. Since the quality of education is crucial for the country’s economic growth and prosperity, the business education institutions and programs in Ukraine and other Central and Eastern European and Eurasian countries may benefit from implementing quality management through ACBSP accreditation for their undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate (doctoral) business programs, to satisfy ever-rising expectations of candidates for top managerial and leadership positions. 
 The research suggests that 51% of the institutions of higher education with business programs in the United States, and 93% of the institutions of higher education worldwide could benefit from implementing accreditation principles and processes to maintain and enhance their education quality and competitiveness in the world business education market, for the sake of highest recognition of their graduates’ diploma on the global job markets and significant increase of their employability.

Optimasi Jaringan Hotspot Mikrotik Melalui Pendekatan Siklus Pengembangan Jaringan (NDLC) Di Kampus ITB Ahmad Dahlan

The advancement and rapid spread of the internet poses a challenge to provide more optimal network quality at the Ahmad Dahlan Institute of Technology and Business educational institutions (ITB-AD). To help manage the existing network, the campus uses a proxy as the main manager of the existing hotspot network. The problem experienced is that the hotspot login display still uses the default default from Mikrotik, blocking has not been applied to accessing adult content, the efficiency of available bandwidth has not been properly distributed, and there is no scheduled access to existing network users. The aim of this research is to optimize the quality of the ITB-AD hotspot network. To help solve problems that exist in research, researchers use the Network Development Life Cycle (NDLC) as a methodology in research. The results of this study are able to provide additional custom configurations for hotspot login displays, application of adult content blocking, burst bandwidth as bandwidth efficiency and implement access schedules for users in the hotspot network. The conclusion of the study is that using the NDLC method can optimize the quality of the ITB-AD hotspot network.

Design Thinking for Management Education

The changing environment of management education and the skill needs of the industry have been compelling management pedagog y to go through rapid changes. Even after a paradigm shift in the approach to imparting management education in view of its professional nature, it has been observed that the huge competition in this field has been leading to disruptions demanding innovative approaches by institutions to ensure sustenance. The need for innovations is felt as it is observed in various teaching pedagogical strategies. Institutions are banking upon creative and unique approaches to both developing the content or curriculum as well as the methods of teaching. This article tries to highlight the design thinking approach for management education in India to enable parity with international standards. The divergent and the convergent techniques adopted in the changed management education system have brought in innovations with the use of technology. The primary objective of this article is to study and understand the concept of design thinking approach as well as to verify the application of design thinking to management education in India. The contexts and constraints of the disruptive design thinking approach are also discussed in the article. The scope of the paper extends from discussing the evolution of management education, the disruptions and the need to search for a solution for the disruptions – applying design thinking approach by focussing on innovations in courses, curricula, pedagogy and the orientation of management education as a whole due to these changes. A small study was taken up trying to understand the perception of students and faculty on the scope of design thinking in different categories of business education institutions.

Soft skills for sustainable employment of business graduates of Bangladesh

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine whether soft skill requirements found in employer job postings (advertisements) within different roles of business are similar to the soft skills practically needed in the workplace and the perception of faculties at schools of business in Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach A two-phased study was administered. Phase 1 involved reviewing the latest relevant literature and hundreds of job advertisements; and in phase 2, questionnaires were administered to elicit responses from executives and faculty members from different universities in Bangladesh. Judgment sampling and the snowball technique were used to develop the sample of 84 respondents with a response rate of 56 percent. In total, 15 soft skills were used to develop the instrument. Descriptive statistics and a Kruskal–Wallis test were performed to analyze the collected data, where factors that retained α at or below 0.05, a family-wise Bonferroni adjustment (Mann–Whitney U test) was applied. Findings All the mentioned soft skills are found to be desirable by the recruiters and faculties also agreed with them. However, there exist disparities on the perceived importance of four soft skills among faculties and recruiters, and a gap was found between the business curriculum and industry expectations from fresh-out business graduates. Originality/value This study could be a basis for future studies and would help business education institutions guide their students to master the skills, and to develop and prepare them for real life battle in the job market. Moreover, the study indicates the gap between executives’ expectations from the graduates and the institutional teaching provided by higher education institutions (for business majors), which would help practitioners reform their business curriculum to better ensure employability for their business graduates. Moreover, the study opens an avenue for further research in this field for implementing training programs for attaining the most desired soft skills among higher education institutions.

Organizational transformation and higher sustainability management education

Purpose– This paper aims to investigate the roles of leadership in enabling sustainability transformation of universities and higher sustainability management education. It advocates research into the role of leadership for a university’s sustainability transformation by exploring interactions between university members and institutional contexts.Design/methodology/approach– Using a case study approach, this study explores the sustainability transformation of a university and its influence on the MBA Sustainability Management by applying Mintzberg’s leadership framework.Findings– The findings suggest that leaders can strongly influence a process of change in mindsets, practices and curricula to incorporate sustainability into higher business education institutions. Whereas bottom-up leadership initiatives are crucial, leadership support from top management is seen as important to enable larger, more radical steps of transformation.Originality/value– It is worthy noting that in the medium run strategic leadership to develop good sustainability management education programs requires a consistent institutional commitment for sustainability.

The Profitability of Environmental Proactivity in Business Education Institutions: an Investigation of University Administrators

Over the last decades, the implementation of an environmentally-proactive behavior has taken on a new priority as part of the environmental planning strategies at higher education institutions. Nonetheless, this trend has exerted a heterogeneous impact on business education centres. Moreover, prior studies have found that administrators’ efforts play a crucial role to foster a school climate supportive of environmental proactivity. This paper contributes to investigate how and why universities, i.e. organizations not guided primarily by financial profits, decide to undertake an environmentally-proactive behavior. Specifically, we analyze deans’ perceptions in relation to the economic advantages that may be derived out of different levels of environmental proactivity of the centres. To that aim, we draw on a sample of 74 deans. Contrary to our original expectations, results reveal that there are no significant differences in deans’ perceptions of the economic advantages from their centres’ environmental proactivity.

An Exploration of the Research/Teaching Trade‐off in the Perception of Business Students

Most business education institutions (BEIs) try to hire good researchers for teaching. However, it is controversial to say that excellent researchers are always excellent instructors. This paper explores the students’ perception of the teaching delivered by both researchers and non‐researchers. Our data suggests that the pure possession of a PhD is negatively related to measured aspects of students’ satisfaction with classes. However, the instructor's publication record is positively related to most – but not all – aspects. Having more teaching experience, another element that is typically considered in an instructor's job interview, is not positively related to the students’ satisfaction, but rather it is the specific teaching experience in that specific BEI that counts. Moreover, smaller group sizes, a key element in a BEI's cost structure, are appreciated by students. Finally, compulsory and optional classes are perceived to be equally useful, although the latter seem to overall better satisfy and entertain students.

Since quantitative information on the use of such games in Thai business school is still very limited, it is important for business educators to explore the current condition of business simulation games in Thai Business School and to understand key similarities and differences between Western countries and Thailand in business educational institutions. In order to enhance the body of knowledge in this area (Scott, 2002; Proserpio and Gioia, 2007; Kolb, 1984; Gosen and Washbush, 2004; Thavikulwat, 2004), it is of paramount importance that educators know what, how, and when such games can be used in the Thai classroom setting in business school. Therefore, the current study aims to explore the current situation of business simulation game in business schools in Thailand.

Gaining insight into student satisfaction using comprehensible data mining techniques

As a consequence of the heightened competition on the education market, the management of educational institutions often attempts to collect information on what drives student satisfaction by e.g. organizing large scale surveys amongst the student population. Until now, this source of potentially very valuable information remains largely untapped. In this study, we address this issue by investigating the applicability of different data mining techniques to identify the main drivers of student satisfaction in two business education institutions. In the end, the resulting models are to be used by the management to support the strategic decision making process. Hence, the aspect of model comprehensibility is considered to be at least equally important as model performance. It is found that data mining techniques are able to select a surprisingly small number of constructs that require attention in order to manage student satisfaction.

Business Education in Pakistan: Growth, Problems and Prospects.

In present age of knowledge economy, professional education has gained unique importance. The post World War II developments in shape of unprecedented growth of trade and industry have caused proliferation of business education throughout world beside progress in other areas like engineering and medicine. Resultantly, business education achieved great value. The importance of business education has been further increased in developing economy like Pakistan, which has still long way to reach the status of developed economy. An overview of the growth of the business education in Pakistan has been presented in this study through highlighting its problems and future prospect. For this purpose, a non-systematic narrative review was carried out in such way that a thorough review of the existing literature on business education in Pakistan was done. It has been found that the roots of existing business education system in Pakistan lies in the educational system introduced by British in past. The present system of business education in Pakistan has gradually grown in past sixty four years, in such way that it has experienced a paradigm shift in 21 st century, when the Government of Pakistan invested huge amount in education sector for development of country through knowledge and technology. It is still facing different inherited problems which are either from the institution or government side. There is a need of a more dynamic approach for full development the business education system in country through joint collaboration between society, business education institutions and government. Once such system will be developed then the requirements of business sector will be successfully fulfilled and country will get a strong base in commerce, trade and industry, which will ultimately develop the country as whole.

The socio-demographic progression of the Pakistani woman manager 1988 to 2004: An empirical evidence from the private sector

The purpose of this study was to help identify the types of women who had opted for managerial professions in the private sector, and to identify any trends in the social, economic, or educational backgrounds that might have had a bearing on the types of women likely to pursue a managerial career. Research for the survey included 152 organizations in the private sector that had employed graduates from business educational institutions. Out of these 87 organizations reported women at managerial levels. 207 managerial women answered the mail survey. The findings suggest that the profession still remains the domain of upper-middle-class women and not much has changed between 1988 and 2004. Women’s chances of obtaining a senior managerial position increase if they have been educated at schools or institutions at which the medium of instruction was English. However, unlike their Western counterparts, Pakistani women managers do not pursue their careers at the cost of personal or family commitments.

A Biographical Profile of Professional Women Managers in Pakistan’s Private Sector

The purpose of this paper is to develop a biographic profile of women managers in the private sector in Pakistan. The profile would help identify (i) the types of women who had opted for managerial professions in the private sector, and (ii) any trends in their social, economic, or educational backgrounds that might have a bearing on the types of women likely to pursue a managerial career.Research for the survey included 152 organizations that had employed graduates from business educational institutions. Out of these 87 organizations reported women at managerial level. All the women managers at these organizations were asked to complete a questionnaire package comprising measures obtained from self-reporting questions on their social, economic, and educational backgrounds.The author developed a representative profile of the woman manager in Pakistan’s private sector based on the findings. The findings suggest that unlike their Western counterparts, Pakistani women managers do not pursue their careers at the cost of personal or family commitments. The profession remains the domain of upper-middle-class women. Women’s chances of obtaining a senior managerial position increase if they have been educated at schools or institutions at which the medium of instruction was English. This is significant because few Pakistani citizens have access to such institutions.

Business Education in Changing Scenario

Very rarely one can find a business education faculty up to the mark. The statement does not imply non-availability of good faculties; but the available resources are very less to their commensurate requirement. Since the ‘Business Education’ has been transformed in a “dream-selling profitable business”, the proprietors of such business organizations are always effortful to maximize their profit. They avoid appointing full-time faculties. Barring a few, BEIs are not adopting any mechanism to evaluate the performances. Dynamic courses offering institutions are very few. Most of the business education institutions offer traditional courses i.e. marketing management, financial management, corporate accounting, etc. In many cases, BEIs themselves are very much reluctant in making efforts for good liaison with industries and business world in the wake of practical exposure. Placement is a crucial component of management education. The Universities do not give any consideration to placements. The AICTE recognized institutes, barring a few, toe the university line. Most of the AICTE recognized institutes are not able to offer jobs to all their students. Looking to the prevailing poor condition of the business education system, an altogether new business education system is required to be evolved. This paper is an effort in such evolution.
