Pre-earthquake fuzzy logic-based rapid hazard assessment of reinforced concrete buildings

The main purpose of this paper is to present a rapid building assessment fuzzy logic (FL) modelling for risk assessment based on expert construction engineering verbal informatics. Before an earthquake, a set of input expert assessment variables are transformed into five types of hazard categorization as "no damage", "slight damage", "moderate damage", "severe damage", and "collapse". Main variables are reported by expert engineers based on visual inspection of structural components in addition to the building location's peak ground velocity (PGV) micro zonation numerical value, soil type and building's material information. Each input variable and output hazard class is fuzzified. A valid set of fuzzy rule base components is written based on input variables, each of which has an appropriate output hazard class. The fuzzy hazard assessment model has input and output variables in terms of fuzzy sets. Thus, the overall model output is in the form of a fuzzy set and then defuzzified to find the percentage of each hazard class for a single building. The application of this fuzzy logic model is presented for twenty existing reinforced concrete buildings, and the final hazard categories of these buildings are presented with interpretations and recommendations.

Automated management of green building material information using web crawling and ontology

Abstract Various green building certifications have been discussed as a part of efforts to realize sustainable development. In some countries, it is mandatory to acquire certifications for buildings above a certain scale. As a result, the demand for green building certifications has increased. Various studies have been conducted on the efficient performance of green building certification tasks. To improve the tasks for material information management, the following problems should be addressed: 1) Evaluation of material selection is difficult because of limitations on the amount and quality of the collected information; 2) Unnecessary duplication of work occurs because the important information created at each stage of a project is not delivered efficiently to the next step; 3) Information management for material information, which requires continuous updating, is not sufficient. Therefore, this study proposes an automated process of collecting and classifying Green Building Material Information (GBMI) using “web crawling” and “ontology” to improve the work efficiency of material information management. The proposed process is verified for interior finishing materials, which are a part of green building certification tasks. The proposed process can reduce the time required for the information management of building materials and eliminate human errors.

Awareness and Knowledge of Hazardous and Toxic Building Materials in Adaptation Projects

Building adaptation projects may involve hazardous and toxic substances hidden in the building materials. These substances pose dangers to health and safety, disturbing the environment and affecting the projects’ turnover. Literature reviews on building adaptation and building materials information management found that vital information are seldom available. This study determines the awareness and knowledge of stakeholders in Malaysian building adaptation projects on the required building materials information. Analysis of interviews with 16 experienced stakeholders revealed the lack of awareness and information on existing building materials that may contain hazardous and toxic substances. Building Material Management Framework for Greener Adaptation Projects

The adverse impacts of building materials to sustainability have raised global concerns on the availability of information on hazardous and toxic contents. Data and information on the contents, management and effects were still insufficient. This paper illustrates the issues of building materials information in adaptation projects through critical literature review. In lieu with the current efforts to shift towards greener building practices, improvements are required in the development of building material management during construction, occupancy and operation of building adaptation projects.Keywords: Building adaptation; Building material information; Green construction; Sustainable constructioneISSN 2398-4295 © 2018. Purpose: This study aims to set up the classification system for providing infill information and draw detailed infill information required by suppliers, thereby promoting the revitalization of long-life housing and utilizing such information as preliminary data for establishing web system, on which infill information required by users in the long-life housing design process are available. Method: For the method of study, the infill information classification system and detailed information were drawn through the analysis of existing building material information systems; and the survey targeting working-level personnel was carried out in order to verify the drawn information system. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the hierarchical classification system (scheme) was selected by quoting the classification system by material type as infill type, after analyzing existing DB information systems and drawing the hierarchical classification system for infill. Second, the comparative analysis between infill was available to users for the detailed infill information of long-life housing, and the essential information and general information were selected for differentiating information. Third, only approximately 30% of the survey respondents recognized the infill of long-life housing, but they did not recognize its difference from existing building materials. Fourth, through the analysis of paths to obtain infill information of long-life housing, it was confirmed that infill information was obtained mostly through books and research papers regarding long-life housing, followed by the existing information systems. The significance of the study lies in that it is differentiated from the previous information system as the information system specialized in the infill of long-life housing was established, and can be used as a measure to revitalize long-life housing market.

Since the necessity of environmental friendly building design is not valid only as the short-term slogan of government but is more valid as the essence of architectural design and construction activity, to make environmental friendly building design manual well is important, but more than that, to establish the building material information and the specification system well should be followed and be accompanied with. For achieving this task, First, American style specification code system should be introduced under the naming specification committee in the KIRA or under the certified association with the official organization like American CSI. Second, it is recommended that building material information and specification be inter-locked with each other and that the standard specification be binded in fascicles and be disseminated in internet based digital file like KS code under the 20 numbering code system for special and construction specification's easy editing. Lastly, the attachment of environmental authorizing code on the standard specification and on the material information will be better than the preceding researchers' proposal of making environmental friendly special specification separately.

A building material evaluation and selection model for the Turkish construction sector

PurposeThe research project called “Designing a building material relational database management system for Turkish construction sector”, aims to join “supply side” and “demand side” in the same environment that works on the subject of building material information in the Turkish construction sector. The paper aims to discuss the project findings.Design/methodology/approachData were gathered from the information supplied and demanded from the points of sources, levels and frequency of updating by the help of the questionnaires conducted. The data gathered were integrated into the pre‐construction stage and used in the analysis of the process as to how this information was used by the “demand side” for building material information. IDEF‐0, a structured methodology for functional process analysis, is used to figure out building material evaluation and selection processes in the pre‐construction stage.FindingsMaterial evaluation and selection process for the pre‐construction stage is figured out. Behaviors and requirements of demand‐side and supply‐side in building material information is studied. Difficulties in supplying and presenting building material information in Turkey are evaluated.Originality/valueAlthough the subject of the paper is well‐known, Turkish practices and problems are evaluated, and an alternative model is suggested for the Turkish construction sector.
