Hierarchical SVM for Semantic Segmentation of 3D Point Clouds for Infrastructure Scenes

The incorporation of building information modeling (BIM) has brought about significant advancements in civil engineering, enhancing efficiency and sustainability across project life cycles. The utilization of advanced 3D point cloud technologies such as laser scanning extends the application of BIM, particularly in operations and maintenance, prompting the exploration of automated solutions for labor-intensive point cloud modeling. This paper presents a demonstration of supervised machine learning—specifically, a support vector machine—for the analysis and segmentation of 3D point clouds, which is a pivotal step in 3D modeling. The point cloud semantic segmentation workflow is extensively reviewed to encompass critical elements such as neighborhood selection, feature extraction, and feature selection, leading to the development of an optimized methodology for this process. Diverse strategies are implemented at each phase to enhance the overall workflow and ensure resilient results. The methodology is then evaluated using diverse datasets from infrastructure scenes of bridges and compared with state-of-the-art deep learning models. The findings highlight the effectiveness of supervised machine learning techniques at accurately segmenting 3D point clouds, outperforming deep learning models such as PointNet and PointNet++ with smaller training datasets. Through the implementation of advanced segmentation techniques, there is a partial reduction in the time required for 3D modeling of point clouds, thereby further enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the BIM process.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Construction Project Schedule Management: A Review

Nowadays, the implementation and application of the BIM process in construction project management is a pressing need. This aligns with the global development trends in the construction sector and project information management in general. Numerous scholars and companies are actively engaged in learning, understanding, and investigating various aspects of BIM to stay up-to-date and meet the inevitable developmental requirements. This study focuses on the role and application of BIM, intending to identify limitations that hinder its fulfillment of expectations in project schedule management. In addition, it explores studies that show how other countries have effectively employed BIM in project management and progress tracking throughout the project lifecycle. The study aims to address three main objectives: (a) comprehensively examine and provide evidence related to the concept of BIM in project schedule management, (b) present the benefits of applying BIM in comparison to traditional methods in project management and operation, and (c) identify limitations stemming from various factors that may pose challenges in the application of BIM in project schedule management.

BIM and Sustainable Design: A Review of Strategies and Tools for Green Building Practices

Building Information Modeling (BIM) provides a robust foundation for driving sustainability across architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) practices. This paper presents a systematic review of literature elucidating the confluence of BIM tools and processes with accelerated performance simulations and green building certification systems needed to guide environmentally sensitive design. Integrated Revit-Insight 360 is shown to enable 21% lower energy use intensity (EUI) and 8.5% reduced lifecycle costs over baseline for an office building through rapid multi-objective optimization spanning orientation, envelope and HVAC properties. Enhanced integrated platforms perform detailed thermal zoning analysis capturing realistic solar gains and heat storage effects, right-sizing heating equipment by 7.2% over conventional workflows. Further, BIM automation mitigates nearly 50-80% of manual calculations for BEAM Plus, LEED prerequisites and accelerates documentation for certification. However, interoperability issues inhibiting holistic sustainability evaluations persist due to lack of modeling standards. Emerging tools exemplify modular green assessment connecting multi-vendor engines to resolve underlying technical barriers. As BIM object definitions and seamless analytical integration matures, widespread mainstreaming for sustainability is foreseeable. While current measured metrics revolve around energy use, emissions and green certification, future work needs to address social and economic indicators also enabled by data-rich BIMs. Nevertheless, coupled with continuous monitoring for validation, BIM provides the foundation for the AEC industry to progress towards comprehensive sustainable building lifecycles.

Innovative Approach to Convert Geographic Information System-Based Highway Models into Multidimensional Building Information Modeling Platforms Using Dynamo

This study proposes an innovative process of transforming a geographic information system (GIS)-based highway model into a robust building information modeling (BIM) platform using Dynamo visual programming tool. The existing GIS system used by the Indiana Department of Transportation for highway network representation has significant limitations of data storage and handling capacity, representation of complex entities, and inclusion of crucial traffic data from weigh-in-motion and automatic traffic recorder stations. The developed process involves converting poly-curves from the GIS model into model-curves compatible with BIM, classifying attributes into shape families, and integrating traffic data from traffic recorder stations. The resulting multidimensional BIM platform, extending from three to eight dimensions, encompasses essential project details and traffic data. To ensure interoperability, an Open BIM process involving the generation of an industry foundation classes (IFC) file is utilized, allowing efficient data exchange among different software platforms and stakeholders.

Integrating BIM Processes with LEED Certification: A Comprehensive Framework for Sustainable Building Design

In response to the pressing demand for sustainable building practices within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector, this study investigates the integration of building information modeling (BIM) processes with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system, with a primary focus on enhancing sustainable design strategies. The objectives are twofold: firstly, to comprehensively understand the existing synergies between BIM and LEED, and secondly, to develop innovative methods that facilitate a seamless integration of these two crucial components. The study is structured into four distinct phases, each contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the synergistic relationship between BIM and LEED. In Phase 1, the “LEED-BIM Worksheets” is introduced, versatile tools designed to facilitate sustainable strategy formulation. These worksheets transparently identify roles, assess competencies, estimate certification levels, and enhance communication among stakeholders. Phase 2 highlights the “BIM Uses for Project Phase” diagram, emphasizing interdependencies between BIM uses and processes. This diagram provides insights into collaborative synergies among BIM uses and streamlines process mapping. Phase 3 introduces the “Liv1 Process Map”, a transformative visual representation of the building process. Integrated within building execution plans (BEPs), this map intricately weaves together responsible parties and BIM uses, fostering cohesive collaboration. Phase 4 extends the research with the introduction of the “Liv.2 Process Map”. This extension integrates selected BIM uses from the LEED Pilot Credits Library, emphasizing alignment between BIM processes and LEED credit criteria. Collectively, this research illuminates the potential for streamlining sustainable practices within the AEC sector. The findings offer valuable insights for both practitioners and researchers, empowering them to navigate the integration of BIM technology with LEED certification. By harmonizing digital transformation with ecological consciousness, this research significantly contributes to advancing sustainable building practices.

Investigating building information modelling (BIM) and lean construction: the potential BIM-lean interactions synergy and integration in the Jordanian construction industry

PurposeThe construction industry sector is developing rapidly, especially with the increasing pace of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in this sector. Construction projects can benefit from greater integration and collaboration between their technologies and processes to reap the advantages and keep pace with the recent significant technological and managerial techniques developments. Therefore, this study aims to delve into and investigate building information modeling (BIM) and Lean Construction (L.C.) with a concentration on the potential BIM–lean interactions synergy and integration in the Jordanian construction industry.Design/methodology/approachThis study takes exploratory nature, followed by the deductive research approach, and is designed to be a mono-quantitative research methodology. Moreover, the sampling technique is non-probability convenience sampling, and the research strategy is implemented through a questionnaire used and analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science to conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analysis and verify the reliability and validity through proper tests.FindingsThe BIM–lean interactions synergy and integration findings revealed that eliminating waste (time, cost, resources), promoting continuous improvement (Kaizen) and standardizing as lean construction principles are the most significant and agreeable toward achieving BIM–lean interactions synergy. On the other hand, “High 3D Visualization Modelling” was the most significant BIM function, followed by “Rapid and Auto-Generation of Documents and Multiple Design Alternatives” and “Maintenance of Information and Design Model Integrity.” Moreover, based on the relative importance index (RII) values, “Lack of Technical Expertise in BIM-LEAN” is the most significant challenge with a 0.89 value of RII, followed by “Lack of Government Direction and Standard Guidelines” with a 0.88 value of RII and “Financial considerations” with a 0.83 value of RII.Originality/valueThis study will help provide a new detailed overview that investigates the effects and expected benefits of integrating BIM processes and technological functionalities with lean construction principles within a synergetic environment. Moreover, the study will increase the awareness of using new technologies and management approaches in the architectural, engineering and construction industry, seeking to achieve integration between these technologies to reach ideal results in terms of the outputs of construction operations.

An HBIM Integrated Approach Using Non-Destructive Techniques (NDT) to Support Energy and Environmental Improvement of Built Heritage: The Case Study of Palazzo Maffei Borghese in Rome

Built heritage energy and environmental improvement is increasingly being recognised as a key driver in the fight against climate change. This effort necessitates a thorough understanding of the building to guide the selection of technologies and design solutions. To have a picture of the buildings’ characteristics and behaviour that is as complete as possible, in situ studies are essential, although the complexities and heterogeneities of historical buildings make these analyses still challenging, especially in professional practice. To address these issues, the paper describes an integrated approach including the field application of Non-Destructive Techniques (namely, Heat Flow Meter measurements, Infrared thermographies and indoor environmental monitoring) within a Heritage Building Information Modelling process. This interdisciplinary/integrated approach fostered the use of each type of analysis’s results to guide the subsequent analyses and incrementally deepen the knowledge of the building. The methodology was applied to a case study in the historical city centre of Rome in Italy. The analyses will be of service in developing dynamic building performance simulations to support the design of the interventions.

Lexicon-based content analysis of BIM logs for diverse BIM log mining use cases

This study conducted a lexicon-based content analysis of building information modeling (BIM) logs from four major BIM authoring tools and four custom-developed BIM loggers to understand whether the BIM logs satisfy the information requirements for various BIM log mining use cases, as well as to assess their potential for future development and research. First, through a critical review of previous studies, 19 different ways of using BIM logs were identified, including authoring and collaborative pattern discovery, authoring process modeling, collaboration pattern analysis, command predictions, and team optimization; however, most of the uses concerned process discovery. The analysis also revealed that BIM log mining has mainly been used for the design phase, with a few examples of being used for the construction phase. For BIM log mining, various techniques ranging from simple frequency analyses via social network analyses to advanced pattern discovery were deployed. In terms of BIM log sources, native BIM logs from Revit were dominantly used almost in all studies, aside from a few studies that used custom-developed BIM logs. The content analysis of BIM logs showed that the contents of native BIM logs provided by major BIM authoring tools varied, but commonly lacked model-element-specific information; this limitation prevents in-depth analyses of BIM processes. Overall, the current disproportionate focus on process discovery in the design phase of BIM log mining suggests that the application of BIM log mining is still in its early stages and holds significant potential for other project phases if adding model-element-specific information is incorporated.

A Multivariate Analysis of the Variables Impacting the Level of BIM Expertise of Professionals in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) Industries of the Developing World Using Nonparametric Tests

Building information modeling (BIM) mandates are becoming more widespread because BIM allows design and construction teams to operate more productively and also enables them to collect the data they generate during the process for use in operations and maintenance tasks. As a result, professionals in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries are expected to possess excellent BIM expertise. Despite the fact that the developing world has largely not adopted BIM, many studies have been conducted on BIM usage, awareness, drivers and barriers with a focus on the developing world. Numerous studies have pointed to the professionals’ lack of BIM expertise in the developing world’s AEC sector as a major barrier to BIM deployment. Nevertheless, no research has been conducted to assess the variables impacting the level of BIM expertise among professionals. After a detailed review of the literature, the study developed five study hypotheses and created a conceptual model to help assess the variables impacting the level of BIM expertise of professionals in the AEC industry in the developing world. After that, a questionnaire survey was carried out to collect data from 103 seasoned professionals in the Ghanaian construction industry. Nonparametric tests, such as the Kruskal–Wallis, pairwise post hoc Dunn, Mann–Whitney, Pearson’s correlation and the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS SEM) tests, were adopted to assess the relationships between the level of BIM expertise of professionals (BE) and the following variables: (1) profession (P), (2) the frequency of BIM use by professionals (BF), (3) the highest dimension of BIM adopted by AEC firms and companies (BD), (4) professionals’ perception of BIM (PB) and (5) the BIM implementation barriers (BIMIBs). P, BF, BD and PB were found to have a substantial impact on the level of BIM expertise acquired by professionals. With regards to professionals’ perception of the BIM software and process, only one (PB3–BIM is not useful to our company at the moment) out of ten of them was found to have a significant impact on BE, highlighting the impact of employers on the level of BIM expertise of professionals. In addition, the study discovered that any resolution made in an attempt to tackle the lack of/insufficient level of BIM expertise among professionals would prove futile without significant effort from the higher education sector (HES) of the developing world and the entire world at large. The study’s conceptual, empirical, managerial and theoretical implications and findings would serve as a roadmap for researchers, professionals and academics in developing nations as they endeavor to seek more ways of increasing BIM expertise among their professionals and to encourage BIM usage throughout the project lifecycle.

A SCAN-TO-BIM PROCESS FOR THE MONITORING AND CONSERVATION OF THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE: INTEGRATION OF THEMATIC INFORMATION IN A HBIM MODEL

Abstract. Conservation actions often challenge traditional planned conservation tools, especially when referring to the management of data relating to the existing building heritage due to the huge amount of information to be acquired and archived. In response to this requirement, the Building Information Modelling (BIM) process, applied to historical buildings as Historical-BIM (HBIM), could be an effective solution for integrating different types of data concerning not only the geometric features but also useful qualitative information in conservation and preservation works (i.e. the type of materials, construction techniques, the presence of degradation and instability, intervention techniques, etc.). Although the BIM process has reached a considerable level of maturity, several aspects related to the application of the method to existing structures through the Scan-to-BIM process require further research; particularly the need to find suitable approaches to integrate, manage and store thematic information. The article describes the work carried out in the case study of Villa Castelnuovo, an eighteenth-century architectural building located in Palermo (Italy), in which, starting from an integrated survey, it was possible to generate an HBIM model to support all the phases concerning preventive maintenance, long-term redevelopment and management of the architectural asset. The research focused mainly on the modelling and information integration phases, developing a procedure applicable to different contexts for storing, managing and analysing the external façade decay necessary for documenting and monitoring the architectural heritage.

Knowledge-Enabled Building Information Modelling: A Framework for Improved Decision-Making

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to build an integrated framework that provides a methodical approach to managing the knowledge produced by Building Information Modelling (BIM) procedures. Theoretical framework: BIM has revolutionized the approach to building design and construction projects; nevertheless, managing the vast amounts of heterogeneous data produced by the various BIM processes is a very difficult task. The need of knowledge management (KM) for successful BIM implementation is becoming widely acknowledged as it will allow organisational stakeholders to make strategic decisions, reduce errors, and improve results. Methodology: Both primary and secondary data were collected in this research. This data was utilized to develop an initial version of the KM-based BIM framework, which underwent a thorough two-phase expert evaluation process via interviews with industry experts to enhance the framework's applicability and relevance. Findings: The significant factors influencing KM in the context of BIM were identified. Moreover, through the expert evaluation process, it was determined that the proposed KM-based BIM framework provided valuable assistance in addressing these factors and in managing BIM organisational knowledge. Research implications: The research has implications for the field of building design and construction projects. By promoting the adoption of a KM-based BIM framework, it seeks to address the challenges associated with managing heterogeneous data and information silos. The framework has the potential to improve the decision making process in the context of BIM. Originality/value: This is the first research providing a methodical approach to managing BIM-related knowledge through KM, and that provides an expert-validated framework for improved decision making.

Building Information Modelling for Application in Geotechnical Engineering

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is used to create and manage data during design, construction, and operation. It helps to effectively manage resources and optimize processes in the construction industry. Geotechnical engineering is one of the complex disciplines that may require BIM integration. Various data types must be provided in a timely manner and require real-time feedback, fast processing, and construction guidance. The first problem presented in the paper is the use of the traditional 2D-based method used by engineers for a particular task. It seems to be impractical when some adjustments are included. Another issue is the lack of communication between the workers. It poses the problem of information exchange and misunderstanding during the interpretation of technical data. This paper aims to find different integration techniques and steps for integrating geotechnical data into the BIM process. Methods used to examine the topic are qualitative research, literature review, and case studies. These methods were useful for studying the problems and introducing the soil information into the BIM application. Firstly, a case study with I-BIM was considered, and the BIM–FEM–BIM interaction was applied to introduce geotechnical information with Plaxis 3D. The results have shown that further development of BIM in infrastructure is needed. Another case study explored the present state of the geotechnical design in BIM and potential solutions. The new frameworks were recreated: many boreholes were imported to the BIM, and a 3D geometric model of the entire hill was created for the hill fortification structure with soil clogging. The last two studies in Malaysia modeled a 3D subsurface and used two geotechnical formats, AGS and CVS. The first includes more information than the second; however, the second can be used for a more generalized model. Overall, BIM–FEM interaction can be used as a geometric model for data transfer. However, the open data format of the Industry Foundation Class (IFC) or geotechnical data format of the AGS and CVS were suggested to be used for greater flexibility. It was also found that excessive information makes the model loaded and complex. Therefore, it was recommended that big data be summarized properly with minimal loss of necessary data. Further research is needed to understand data transmission schemes of geotechnical information better. Moreover, it is recommended to put all the strategies directly into practice to create a geotechnical design.

Building information modelling (BIM) interoperability for architecture and engineering (AE) of the structural project: A case study

The Architecture, Engineering (AE), and Construction (AEC) industry is a sector in accepting change and adopting new technological approaches. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is increasingly adopted as the leading information technology tool emerging in the AEC industry. Thanks to its advantages, especially the generation of a virtual model centralising all the information concerning the different trades involved and the effective interoperability, BIM has greatly helped construction projects reach a mature performance level. However, some phases in the AE lack interoperability and information exchange efficiency. This inefficiency is much more critical in the case of design and structural projects. In this respect, this study aims to conduct and integrate BIM into an AE process to analyse and improve the degree of efficiency of a structural project. For this purpose, a real case study on a high-standing villa was conducted. The BIM process was implemented based on the spirit of collaboration and interoperability with both Revit® and Robot® software. The results describe the BIM process’s ease of modelling, verification, transfer, exchange, and error detection. Thus, the speed, ease of modification, and decision-making. Thus, the rate of improvement and decision-making. The paper joins the body of studies seeking to reposition the AEC industry. It develops a Framework between Revit and Robot at the professional level, valid for all structural projects. For the scientific community, the study proposes innovation in AEC as a field of research to achieve the desired performance and sustainability. The work is limited to architecture and structural engineering and does not include MEP.

Integration of Building Information Modeling Interoperability into Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bridge Substructures

Acceptance of building information modeling (BIM) throughout the bridge industry is widely recognized as inevitable. However, while adoption of BIM technologies has proliferated throughout the building industry, advances pertaining to BIM for bridges and other structures remain underway. The present study aims to increase the potential for integrating BIM processes into software packages that possess capabilities for nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of bridge substructures. Moreover, the present study is intended to galvanize stakeholders within the area of soil–structure interaction (SSI) modeling and analysis to more effectively participate in interoperability workflows as part of bridge design. A proof-of-concept exporter tool was formulated in a modular manner to robustly export finite element model data stored in a selected SSI analysis package into the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard, with the IFC standard chosen as the target schema owing to its widespread usage in the construction industry. The ability of the exporter tool to—with fidelity—convert a model from the selected analysis software to the IFC standard is showcased through an illustrative case study. In carrying out the case study, collections of geotechnical modeling parameters were identified that, while being common to numerous nonlinear SSI analysis packages, are not present in the existing IFC schema. Inclusion of these parameters in the IFC schema is proposed, serving to: 1) lower the barrier for entry of SSI modeling and analysis stakeholders to take part in interoperability processes and 2) encourage adoption of novel BIM processes in the bridge industry.

Comparative Analysis of Building Information Modeling (BIM) Patterns and Trends in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with Developed Countries

This research seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the current ecosystem of BIM technology and its utilization in the UAE. Since the UAE has been an early adopter of BIM, its utilization of BIM is now likely to reach that of developed nations. By adopting the BIM case study analysis framework, two sets of projects of similar categories in terms of functionality and typology were selected and mapped. One set represents projects within the UAE, and the second represents projects from developed nations utilizing BIM during the projects’ lifecycle (LC). Incorporating expert interviews to triangulate the results collected from the case study analysis will further contribute to developing a more in-depth comprehension of BIM use in the UAE. The three significant inferences can be drawn from the findings. Firstly, in the UAE, stakeholders utilize BIM fragmentarily in different stages. Secondly, the full extent of BIM utilization over the project’s LC is not pursued. Thirdly, no effective BIM standards or protocols exist. Even though international firms are the main drivers of UAE BIM adoption and utilization, UAE BIM is still in its infancy, necessitating a more collaborative effort to realize the holistic benefits of the BIM process. The findings could be utilized to identify industry standards and guiding principles for BIM implementation in the UAE and help identify areas for improvement. It also provides valuable insights into how BIM can be used more effectively in the country and how its use can be promoted. Additionally, it could be used as a guide for owners/asset managers and AEC professionals in the UAE looking to implement BIM in their projects.

BIM-Enabled Design Collaboration Processes in Remote Architectural Practice and Education in Australia

Remote teamwork has become critical to the communicative and collaborative operations of architectural practice and education in Australia. Consequently, building information modeling (BIM) processes, which are core to both sharing and producing architectural designs, are evolving in response. The aim of this paper is to examine and identify ways to improve BIM-enabled design collaboration processes in architectural practice and education. Using data from semi-structured open-ended interviews (n = 25) undertaken during the pandemic, this paper identified six thematic categories of BIM-enabled design collaboration processes: (1) representation, (2) communication, (3) coordination, (4) collaboration, (5) technical operation, and (6) nontechnical operation. These themes, along with 48 codes developed from the interviews, are then presented as an integrated BIM process model. This model contributes to a collective understanding of recent BIM processes and areas where improvements are needed to support BIM adoption and implementation in the new era of remote working.

Modified BIM Processes Considering Safety–Quality Index for Precast Concrete Construction

Precast concrete construction (PCC) is one of the most innovative and efficient methods in construction, but the separate processes involved in this method are one of its disadvantages. Therefore, the project owners considered quality management of PCC based on the Building information modelling (BIM) technique as a key factor to achieving desired tolerances, combining the separated process, and decreasing errors. This study was conducted to modify BIM processes based on dimensionless indices of PCC. The Fuzzy-decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method was used to obtain the weight of variables. Genetic expression programming (GEP) was then used to estimate the modified BIM index (IMBIM) in the PCC according to other important indicators as input data. The statistical results comparing the predicted and calculated values of IMBIM show that there is a low root-mean-square-error (RMSE) of 0.027, low MAE of 0.019, and high R2 of 0.95 in the testing process. Thus, there is good agreement between the relationship of IMBIM and the calculated values that the proposed algorithm in this study can predict IMBIM with high accuracy. The sensitivity analysis illustrates that the index of system quality (Isq) has the most significant effect on IMBIM in comparison with other indices.

THE ROLE AND POSITION OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING (BIM) FRAMEWORK IN ASSEMBLED CONCRETE BUILDINGS

Generally, according to the improvements in construction industry in developed countries, the path and direction of applying different construction such as buildings (with different usages), bridges, dams and etc. is in a way that the important factor of time and costs would be in a balance in all situations. For this purpose, its necessary to use modern technologies of construction in addition to the techniques and managing solutions. In this research we have tried to more an effective step in the way of optimizing the construction process by integration of modern concrete technology and building information modeling (BIM). In this research, implementation process and executive framework of BIM in assembled concrete structures will be checked.

The co-movement effect of managers' psychological factors on the BIM adoption decision in SMEs: a study based on fsQCA

PurposeGiven the complexity of building information modeling (BIM) adoption decisions in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry, understanding BIM adoption decision-making through the net effect of a single factor on BIM adoption decisions alone is limited. Therefore, this paper analyzed the co-movement effect of managers' psychological factors on the BIM adoption decisions from the perspective of managers' perceptions. The purpose is to let managers have a deep understanding of their BIM adoption decisions, and put forward targeted suggestions for the AEC industry to promote the adoption of BIM by SMEs.Design/methodology/approachData from 192 managers in SMEs collected by the questionnaire were used in a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Due to the limitations of fsQCA in making the best use of the data used, as a complement to fsQCA, necessary conditions analysis (NCA) was used to analyze the extent to which necessary conditions influenced the outcome.Findings(1) NCA analysis shows that high perceived resource availability (PRA) and high performance expectancy (PE) are necessary conditions for high BIM adoption intention (AI). (2) fsQCA analysis shows that high PE is the single core condition for high AI. fsQCA analysis identifies three configurations of managers' psychological factors, reflecting three types of managers' decision preferences, namely benefit preference, loss aversion and risk avoidance, respectively. Different decision preferences may lead to different BIM adoption strategies, such as full in-house use, partial in-house/outsourcing and full outsourcing of BIM processes. (3) High perceived risk (PR) and low perceived business value of BIM (PBV) are the core conditions for low AI.Originality/valueThis paper expands on the application of fsQCA to context of BIM adoption decisions. Based on the results of fsQCA analysis, this paper also establishes the relationship between managers' decision-making psychology and BIM adoption strategy choice and analyzes the impact of different decision biases on BIM adoption strategy choice. It concludes with suggestions for encouraging managers to adopt BIM and for avoiding decision-making bias.

An analysis of blockchain technology and smart contracts for Building Information Modeling

Significant changes in the construction industry have been brought about by Building Information Modeling (BIM). While BIM has improved team collaboration and workflow efficiency, the model still faces multiple challenges. These are related primarily to the security, transparency, and reliability of the data shared in the model. A potential way to mitigate these problems, according to many studies, is blockchain technology. This paper reviews the recent literature on the integration of BIM and blockchain technology. Using a rigorous search-and-selection process, the authors conducted a systematic literature review by analyzing 70 studies relevant to BIM-blockchain integration. The state-of-the-art review explains how studies have implemented blockchain technology and provides an overview of different levels of adoption. Various application areas within the BIM process are explored to understand the ongoing research trend. The authors discuss limitations and offer recommendations on how best to implement future work in BIM-blockchain integration.
