Traversing the Challenges of Community Engagement in South Africa: Emerging Researchers’ Perspectives

With the growing emphasis being placed on community engagement, many emerging scholars have found themselves in the field with much to learn beyond the research that they are conducting. Community engagement is guided by principles such as the mutual exchange of knowledge, collaboratively identifying community priorities and an ongoing focus on strengthening and sustaining communities. In practice, community engagement is fraught with various challenges that need to be navigated. These challenges present themselves in different ways to different researchers. In this article, we draw on our experiences as three emerging researchers navigating community-engaged research across two geographic spaces in South Africa, namely, the Western Cape and Gauteng, two of the country’s nine national provinces. The objectives of this article are to explore our experiences of relationship building, to determine the role our positionalities have played in our engaged scholarship, and to explore feelings of disconnectedness as young academics. Following a qualitative reflexive approach, we identified three themes that speak to these objectives, namely, navigating newcomer status and building relationships in community-engaged spaces, reflections on researcher positionality in the field, and the dilemma of (dis)connectedness in engaged scholarship. Our findings highlight the need for support such as mentorship from experienced community-engaged scholars, resources for establishing community connections, guidance in navigating cultural nuances, and training for effective communication and relationship building in communities.

School Public Relations: An Essential Tool for Fostering Effective Communication and Administration in Educational Institutions

In the dynamic landscape of educational institutions effective communication and administration are fundamental elements that underpin the success and sustainability of the educational process and school public relations play a catalytic role in facilitating these processes. As a multifaceted tool, this paper provides a comprehensive insight into school public relations for promoting transparency, building community relationships, and enhancing administrative effectiveness in educational settings. By drawing upon the fundamental principles, strategies, and best practices of school public relations, this study seeks to bring to light its significance in fostering positive stakeholder engagement, managing crises, and achieving organizational goals. Through case studies, theoretical frameworks, and practical insights, the paper examines the various areas of school public relations and its impact on educational administration. Recommendations were made for school administrators, educators, and communication professionals to leverage school public relations as a strategic asset in its pivotal role in enhancing administrative processes and the effective functioning of educational institutions. The paper concluded that school public relations is indispensable in the educational institution. By prioritizing communication excellence, ethical conduct, and stakeholders’ relationships, educational institutions can unlock the full benefits of school public relations as a tool for fostering effective communication and administration.

A Mixed-Methods Evaluation to Inform the Hawai'i Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan.

The Prevent Suicide Hawai'i Taskforce is a state, public, and private partnership of individuals, organizations, and community groups that leads statewide suicide prevention efforts in Hawai'i. The purpose of this evaluation was to identify the progress and barriers of the Taskforce to inform the upcoming 2025 Hawai'i Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan in the following areas: Hope, Help, Heal, Research and Evaluation, and Policy and Advocacy. Utilizing a sequential exploratory mixed-methods approach, 18 key informants were interviewed, followed by a 13-question survey sent to the Taskforce member listserv. Results were analyzed using qualitative coding techniques and descriptive statistics. Interview findings contained six themes: importance of community relationships, interconnection of suicide prevention efforts, progress in diversifying training, organizational challenges, adaptations to the COVID-19 pandemic, and funding challenges. Of the 34 survey respondents, most were involved in the area of Hope (91%). The respondents reported the area with most progress was Hope (87%), and the most important area to address was Help (41%). The majority (82%) of the respondents characterized the level of Taskforce communication as Excellent or Good. Interview and survey data corroborated each other and revealed new insights about the successes and barriers of the Taskforce and their progress in implementing the Strategic Plan. Recommendations included advocating for long-term funding for suicide prevention and building community relationships.

Serving IPV Survivors in Culturally Diverse Communities: Perspectives From Current Service Providers.

This qualitative study examines current IPV service providers' perspectives on service delivery methods that best reach and serve IPV survivors from culturally diverse communities. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 service providers, and transcripts were analyzed for themes related to service providers' experiences. Five themes emerged from the data that suggest best practices for reaching and serving survivors from culturally diverse backgrounds, including understanding survivors' backgrounds, promoting trust and inclusivity, building community relationships, providing culturally responsive education on IPV, and supporting current and future staff with training. Study findings provide implications for the education and training of future service providers.

Inclusion of Black and Latina Parents With Physical Disabilities in a Qualitative Research Study: A Peer Researcher Training Model

Public health qualitative research has largely failed to achieve full inclusion of people with disabilities and Black people and Latinx/as. Although there is a small, but growing, community of academic researchers from each of these communities, there has been limited involvement of non-academic community members in research. While Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) has informed the inclusion of marginalized groups in research for decades, instances of full inclusion of disabled Black people and Latinx/as in public health research have been minimal. One way to ensure the inclusion of Black/Latinx community members with disabilities is to involve them as peer researchers. As part of a qualitative study examining pregnancy experiences of individuals with physical disabilities from Black/Latinx communities, academic researchers trained four peer researchers to conduct interviews and analyze the data. This paper describes our approach, which may serve as a model for training peer researchers in qualitative research methodology for future studies. All peer researchers were women who identified as Black or Latina parents with physical disabilities. This approach was chosen due to the study’s focus on the intersections of disability, race, ethnicity, and pregnancy, and applied a disability justice lens. Although CBPR offers important principles for research existing literature suggests CBPR is not always inclusive and power sharing. Therefore, we developed a research training model which places a unique and timely focus on the intersections of CBPR, racial and disability justice, the importance of building the capacity of Black and Latina disabled peer researchers, and its importance to building community relationships and trust.

BUILDING COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS FOR MORE MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH OLDER BLACK ADULTS

Abstract Black people are grossly underrepresented in clinical trials, especially in Oregon, where only 2% of the population is Black. The Oregon Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center’s (OADRC) Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement (ORE) Core aims to correct this disparity by promoting research participation, fostering retention, and supporting quality experiences for Black Oregonians. Essential to this goal has been having an ORE Core that is 50% Black, leaders experienced in Black-centered cognitive health research, and a team that demonstrates commitment to community partnerships. The ORE Core engages a Community Outreach Specialist (COS) whose efforts reflect our Core’s value of “service before sign-up.” The COS differs from a traditional “recruiter” in that the focus is on community relationship-building, rather than recruitment. This can only be supported by first serving the community (e.g., joining community boards, volunteering) before asking community members to sign-up for research. The OADRC promotes research participation by supporting studies that focus exclusively on older Black health. The African American Dementia and Aging Project, supported by a valuable community health partnership, aims to understand lifestyle factors affecting cognitive health. The Sharing History through Active Reminiscence and Photo-imagery Study (SHARP) aims to improve brain health through a culturally celebratory framework centering the Black experience. As a result, SHARP has sustained high retention rates and increased Black participation in Center research. We discuss the role of ORE Cores, the role, values, and reflections of our COS, and examine how Center studies foster sustained community relationships, ultimately for more meaningful engagement within the Black community.

Analisis Strategi CSR Bank Indonesia dalam Membangun Hubungan Komunitas

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an effort to improve society or communities’ welfare in corporate business operations area. One of the problems in Indonesia is in education, this caused Bank Indonesia to contribute in overcoming the problems through scholarship program and Bank Indonesia scholarships recipients community establishment called New Generation of Indonesia (GenBI). This study aimed to comprehend Bank Indonesia CSR strategy in building community relations. CSR strategy was analyzed by CSR Hierarchy and Triple Bottom Line, while community relations was analyzed by Community Relations Elements and the development and success factors of community relations. This study used a qualitative-descriptive approach with interviews, observation, and document studies as data collection techniques. The results showed Bank Indonesia's CSR strategy was divided into two inseparable programs, and there were efforts to build community relationships. However, communication still needs to be improved, such as through offline meetings to build and strengthen community relations.

How Attributes of Place Threaten Community Trust in the American South: Opportunities for Improving Pandemic-Related Communication

Trust and mistrust influence the utilization of health services, the quality of overall healthcare, and the prevalence of health disparities. Trust has significant bearing on how communities, and the individuals within them, perceive health information and recommendations. The People and Places Framework is utilized to answer what attributes of place threaten community trust in public health and medical recommendations. Augusta-Richmond County is ranked among the least healthy counties in Georgia despite being home to the best healthcare-to-residence ratios and a vast array of healthcare services. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 neighborhood residents. Data were analyzed using the Sort & Sift, Think & Shift method. Threats to community trust were identified within four local-level attributes of place: availability of products and services, social structures, physical structures, and cultural and media messages. We found a broader web of services, policies, and institutions, beyond interactions with health care, that influence the trust placed in health officials and institutions. Participants spoke to both a potential lack of trust (e.g. needs not being met, as through lack of access to services) and mistrust (e.g. negative motives, such as profit seeking or experimentation). Across the four attributes of place, residents expressed opportunities to build trust. Our findings highlight the importance of examining trust at the community level, providing insight into an array of factors that impact trust at a local level, and extend the work on trust and its related constructs (e.g. mistrust). Implications for improving pandemic-related communication through community relationship building are presented.

Developing a feedback-rich culture in academic medicine: the effect of coaching and 360-feedback on physician leadership

BackgroundThis is a time of unprecedented change in healthcare. More physicians are being tasked with stepping into a variety of leadership roles without having received the training needed to be an effective leader. Previous data have demonstrated the effectiveness of both leadership coaching and 360-feedback tools to foster physician well-being and leadership growth. In this proof of concept study, we explore the combined effect of these two tools. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of a brief physician 360 leadership coaching intervention on perception of professional dynamics and acquired leadership skills.MethodsParticipants completed a tailored 360-feedback tool to gather input on their leadership skills, then engaged in five bi-weekly leadership coaching sessions. We conducted a post-intervention semi-structured qualitative interview. Qualitative data were coded using an inductive thematic analysis approach.ResultsTwenty-three primary care physicians at an academic medical center engaged in the 360 leadership coaching study. Participants reported that the intervention yielded valuable benefits in five coaching sessions. Two overarching themes emerged: a Shift in leadership awareness and Navigating their environment. Leadership awareness included increased clarity of purpose and role, and recognition that routine feedback is critical to leadership development. Navigating their environment included gaining relationship-building communication, organizational awareness and navigation strategies.ConclusionsCombining a tailored 360-feedback tool with a five-session leadership coaching intervention provided physicians with valued support infrastructure for becoming more effective leaders. Physicians described a nuanced understanding of the leadership challenges physicians face, and identified the leadership tools needed to navigate the evolving healthcare delivery landscape. Curricula for physician leadership learning could consider this combination of a customized 360 plus targeted leadership coaching for training physician leaders.

MLIS Required? Rethinking the Skills and Knowledge Necessary for Managing in a Public Library

This article explores the potential benefits of eliminating the requirement of a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) for branch library management positions. Waiving the requirement attracts a wider range of candidates, including BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) applicants. Many of the skills necessary for library jobs—such as building community relationships and overseeing budgets—do not necessarily come from acquiring an MLIS and, in fact, are more likely to come from other experiences. At the same time, the MLIS does offer foundational knowledge about library values and professional ethics.

How to Best Understand the Changing Online Social Contract

On November 25, 2021, Kathy Macdonald (M.O.M.), former Calgary Police officer, presented on How to Best Understand the Changing Online Social Contract at the 2021 CASIS West Coast Security Conference. The presentation was followed by a question and answer period and a breakout room session with questions from the audience and CASIS Vancouver executives. The key points discussed included the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for police work in dealing with forensic cyber investigations and processing digital evidence, as well as building community relationships.

A mixed-methods study of how university museums use outreach to build community relationships and deliver value to the university

ABSTRACT This research follows an embedded mixed methods approach to investigate how university museums pursue community in/outreach programs in order to identify best practices that guide successful community partnerships. A sequential exploratory strategy analyzes museum association listserv discussions through a digital content analysis, followed by quantitative and qualitative surveys of practitioners and semi-structured interviews. Additionally, documentary reports of successful and noteworthy community outreach programs from university museums were analyzed for how they operationalized factors that had been identified in the survey and interviews. Integrated results provide details on best practices to increase social capital in the community and value creation for the university-affiliated museum. This study adds to the knowledge of managing the value of university museums in American contexts.

Sâkipakâwin: Assessing Indigenous Cancer Supports in Saskatchewan Using a Strength-Based Approach.

Given that the health care system for Indigenous people tends to be complex, fragmented, and multi-jurisdictional, their cancer experiences may be especially difficult. This needs assessment study examined system-level barriers and community strengths regarding cancer care experiences of Indigenous people in Saskatchewan. Guided by an advisory committee including Indigenous patient and family partners, we conducted key informant interviews with senior Saskatchewan health care administrators and Indigenous leaders to identify supports and barriers. A sharing circle with patients, survivors, and family members was used to gather cancer journey experiences from Indigenous communities from northern Saskatchewan. Analyses were presented to the committee for recommendations. Key informants identified cancer support barriers including access to care, coordination of care, a lack of culturally relevant health care provision, and education. Sharing circle participants discussed strengths and protective factors such as kinship, connection to culture, and spirituality. Indigenous patient navigation, inter-organization collaboration, and community relationship building were recommended to ameliorate barriers and bolster strengths. Recognizing barriers to access, coordination, culturally relevant health care provision, and education can further champion community strengths and protective factors and frame effective cancer care strategies and equitable cancer care for Indigenous people in Saskatchewan.

The importance of community and culture for the recruitment, engagement, and retention of Chinese American immigrants in health interventions.

Chinese Americans experience cancer health disparities throughout the entire cancer continuum. Yet, they remain underrepresented in health research in part due to barriers in recruitment, engagement, and retention. This paper describes the strategies that we devised, by drawing upon our experiences with conducting two culturally sensitive cancer intervention studies, to help researchers improve their recruitment and retention rates of Chinese Americans in health research and address the gap in knowledge on intervention research with this population. The first study assessed the efficacy, adoption, and impact of an intervention, delivered by community health workers, to improve adherence to recommended stomach cancer prevention guidelines for at-risk Chinese Americans. The second study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a culturally adapted version of the Expressive Helping intervention for Chinese American cancer patients and survivors. Our main recruitment strategies revolved around building community relationships, developing culturally sensitive materials, and establishing good first impressions with participants. Our main engagement and retention strategies focused on attending to cultural sensitivity, fostering relationships, and using technology. Harnessing the community's inherent strengths and prioritizing cultural understanding is crucial for culturally sensitive health research with Chinese Americans.

Barriers to and Facilitators of Recruitment of Adult African American Men for Colorectal Cancer Research: An Instrumental Exploratory Case Study.

Racial and ethnic minorities remain underrepresented in research and clinical trials. Better understanding of the components of effective minority recruitment into research studies is critical to understanding and reducing health disparities. Research on recruitment strategies for cancer-specific research-including colorectal cancer (CRC)-among African American men is particularly limited. We present an instrumental exploratory case study examining successful and unsuccessful strategies for recruiting African American men into focus groups centered on identifying barriers to and facilitators of CRC screening completion. The parent qualitative study was designed to explore the social determinants of CRC screening uptake among African American men 45-75 years of age. Recruitment procedures made use of community-based participatory research strategies combined with built community relationships, including the use of trusted community members, culturally tailored marketing materials, and incentives. Community involvement and culturally tailored marketing materials facilitated recruitment. Barriers to recruitment included limited access to public spaces, transportation difficulties, and medical mistrust leading to reluctance to participate. The use of strategies such as prioritizing community relationship building, partnering with community leaders and gatekeepers, and using culturally tailored marketing materials can successfully overcome barriers to the recruitment of African American men into medical research studies. To improve participation and recruitment rates among racial and ethnic minorities in cancer-focused research studies, future researchers and clinical trial investigators should aim to broaden recruitment, strengthen community ties, offer incentives, and use multifaceted approaches to address specific deterrents such as medical mistrust and economic barriers.

Urban Teen Summit: A Community and School Collaboration for Developing Student Leaders of Color

The purpose of this study was to identify the strengths and challenges that emerged from the first 3 years of a high school student leadership development program located in an urban setting. This study was developed as an instrumental case study of one student leadership development program serving urban public high schools in South Central Texas. Feedback was solicited from 10 current and former participants regarding the successes and challenges they encountered within this program. Three themes emerged from these interviews: personal voice, a sense of responsibility, and building community relationships. Discussion is included regarding considerations for secondary administrators about the potential utility of this model in helping develop student leaders of color in urban settings.

Community dental health coordinators' role in community-based pediatric dental education.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry utilized a Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC) to transform a community-based dental education rotation into a positive learning experience for senior dental students. Based in a county health department's Women, Infant, and Children's (WIC) clinic and dental clinic, the initial rotation before implementation of the CDHC was received poorly by students and community partners. This paper reports how CDHC involvement improved student experiences with pediatric patients. In 2018, the CDHC embedded in the WIC clinic where student rotations occur and developed relationships with the community partners to identify key issues. The CDHC then implemented qualitative improvements, including a restructured workflow, preparatory educational modules, and assessment systems to address the issues. Student performance reports, focus group discussions, and a postgraduation questionnaire provided data for evaluation of performance. By year 3, dental appointments for patients under age 6 increased, resulting in 95% of UAB students seeing this age patient; 74% completed four or more. Three-quarters of students reported performing restorative procedures on children. Student and community partner acceptance of the rotation also improved. Postgraduation questionnaires (32% response rate) indicate 35% of graduates continue to treat Medicaid patients after graduation. The CDHC's unique skills in community relationship-building, community-based dental screenings, and pediatric dental care coordination produced measurable improvements in community participation and student clinical experiences. The CDHC can be a vital part of dental education, especially in community education settings. Community-based dental education generated measurable improvements in students' clinical experiences.

Strengthening Indigenous Australian Perspectives in Allied Health Education: A Critical Reflection


 
 
 While professional education in medicine and nursing in Australia has been implementing strategies to increase accessibility for Indigenous Australians, allied health professions remain underdeveloped in this area. Failure to improve the engagement of allied health professions with Indigenous Australians, and failure to increase the numbers of Indigenous staff and students risks perpetuating health inequities, intergenerational disadvantage, and threatens the integrity of professions who have publically committed to achieving cultural safety and health equity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Knowing this, leaders in the allied health professions are asking “What needs to change?” This paper presents a critical reflection on experiences of a university-based Indigenous Health Unit leading the embedding of Indigenous perspectives in allied health curriculum, informed by Indigenous community connections, literature reviews, and research in the context of an emerging community of practice on Indigenous health education. Key themes from reflections are presented in this paper, identifying barriers as well as enablers for change, which include Indigenous community relationship building, education of staff and students, and collaborative research and teaching on Indigenous Peoples’ allied health needs and models of care. These enablers are inherently anti-racism strategies that redress negative stereotypes perpetuated about Indigenous Australians and encourage the promotion of valuable Indigenous knowledges, principles, and practices as strategies that may also help meet the health needs of the general community.
 
 

Addressing Organizational Barriers to Adolescent Access to High-Quality, Low-Cost, Confidential Sexual and Reproductive Health Services in a Community Health Center.

Adolescents face a number of barriers to accessing high-quality, confidential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Although federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), a type of community health center (CHC), are a critical source of health care for medically underserved adolescents, they often lack the capacity and resources to provide specialized SRH services to adolescents. In this article, we describe the development and implementation of an initiative aimed at improving an FQHC's capacity to provide high-quality confidential SRH services to adolescents. For this initiative, a team of clinical and quality improvement staff developed a set of six strategies to improve adolescent SRH services at an FQHC: (1) building community relationships and galvanizing internal organizational support to improve adolescent access to confidential SRH services, (2) developing a long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) program, (3) training clinic staff on SRH and adolescent health topics, (4) adapting the adolescent patient workflow to improve SRH service delivery during appointments, (5) updating and implementing a universal adolescent health assessment tool, and (6) developing billing and registration policies that allow adolescents to receive confidential SRH services. We identified several factors that we believe were key to the successful implementation of our approach in other CHC settings, including encouraging cross-sector collaboration and community focus, providing training as a tool to engage and empower staff as agents of change, involving interdisciplinary staff, piloting on a small scale, and establishing consistent meetings with a clinic champion and improvement team.

A Commons Strategy for Promoting Entrepreneurship and Social Capital: Implications for Community Currencies, Cryptocurrencies, and Value Exchange

Examining how new forms of currencies diffuse is important to uncover their impact on the organization of communities, and thus motivates our study of community currencies. Community currencies provide a medium of exchange by using alternative banknotes or electronic money, which circulates only within particular communities, allowing members to trade goods, increase social cohesion, and achieve collective goals. In this study, we examine how community currencies help facilitate social commons by serving as a setting for building community relationships and a catalyst for other social activities beyond market relations. We analyze cases of community banks that provide microfinance and issue community currencies in Brazil. We find that microfinance entrepreneurs who involve a greater diversity of stakeholders from public, private, and nonprofit sectors in decision making even prior to startup, while also facilitating the formation of supportive social capital from diverse cross-sector stakeholders, increase opportunities for developing new community currencies. By exploring the implications of entrepreneurial actions that promote inclusive participation of diverse stakeholders for accomplishing collective goals, our findings are relevant for other activities that create a common pool of resources while also developing the vitality of the community, including initiatives that use cryptocurrencies and other emerging forms of currencies for building social commons.
