Crystal structure of 2-bromo-3-di-methyl-amino-N,N,N',N',4-penta-methyl-4-(tri-methyl-sil-yloxy)pent-2-eneamidinium bromide.

The reaction of the ortho­amide 1,1,1-tris­(di­methyl­amino)-4-methyl-4-(tri­methyl­sil­yloxy)pent-2-yne with bromine in benzene, yields the title salt, C15H33BrN3OSi+·Br−. The C—N bond lengths in the amidinium unit are 1.319 (6) and 1.333 (6) Å, indicating double-bond character, pointing towards charge delocalization within the NCN plane. The C—Br bond length of 1.926 (5) Å is characteristic for a C—Br single bond. Additionally, there is a bromine–bromine inter­action [3.229 (3) Å] present involving the anion and cation. In the crystal, weak C—H⋯Br inter­actions between the methyl H atoms of the cation and the bromide ions are present.

Convergent preparation of 2-phenylethanol

The convergent synthesis of 2-phenylethanol was executed with bromination of benzene in the presence of pyridine to give bromobenzene which was reacted with magnesium metal to give phenylmagnesium bromide. Ethene was generated from ethanol and converted to 1,2-dibromoethane which in turn was reacted with the Grignard in an inverse manner to give 2-phenylbromoethane. The electrochemical halogenation of benzene: an in situ confocal microprobe Raman study

The electrochemical substitution of benzene on Pt and Rh electrodes has been studied by a confocal microprobe Raman technique. The results showed that chlorination or bromination of benzene could occur with the positive-shift of the electrode potential. The two processes are significantly influenced by the roughness of the electrodes, the relative concentration of benzene and halide ion in solution and the entity of the substrates. The possible mechanism of the electrochemical halogenation of benzene has been proposed.

Other zeolites and ions were also studied. Almost quantitative yields of p- and o-bromo derivatives without dibromo or side-chain derivatives were obtained after 3–4 h when the reaction was performed in the dark. Bromination of benzene was not complete even at reflux temperature. The catalyst may be recycled many times for practical applications.

Photochemical bromination of simple arenes

Photochemical bromination of benzene, fluorobenzene, chlorobenzene, t-butylbenzene, α,α,α-trifluorotoluene, and (in tetrachloromethane) biphenyl and naphthalene gives substitution products and adducts such as 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexabromocyclohexane (1). The decomposition of (1) and of the analogous chlorobenzene adduct (3) under photochemical conditions gives the parent arene, the mono-brominated halogenobenzene, and bromine which may be scavenged by toluene to give benzyl bromide or by benzene to give bromobenzene and dibromobenzenes. Addition is a kinetically controlled process, so that the mechanism of formation of these aryl bromides must be largely through the reversible formation of these adducts. This is consistent with the unusual orientation of apparent attack by bromine upon the arene substrates, since the relative amounts of the isomeric aryl bromides is a consequence of the relative stabilities and ease of elimination of HBr and Br2 from a family of adducts.The range of isomer distribution found within the reaction of each arene with bromine is consistent with two competing processes involved in the formation of the aryl bromides; one of these might be the, direct homolytic substitution by bromine atoms upon the arene.
