Broadband Power Line Communication for Integration of Energy Sensors within a Smart City Ecosystem.

The popularity of the Power Line Communication (PLC) system has decreased due to significant deficiencies in the technology itself, even though new wire installation is not required. In particular, regarding the request for high-speed throughput to fulfill smart-grid requirements, Broadband Power Line (BPLC) can be considered. This paper approaches PLC technology as an object of simulation experimentation in the Broadband Power Line Communication (BPLC) area. Several experimental measurements in a real environment are also given. This paper demonstrates these experimental simulation results as potential mechanisms for creating a complex simulation tool for various PLC technologies focusing on communication with end devices such as sensors and meters. The aim is to demonstrate the potential and limits of BPLC technology for implementation in Smart Grids or Smart Metering applications.

White broadband power line communication: Exploiting the TVWS for indoor multimedia smart grid applications

SummaryBalancing the energy production and consumption in smart grids influences the integration of new high‐speed communication technologies, to support monitoring services. Sharing the television white space (TVWS) spectrum between licensed and unlicensed users has been recommended by the federal communications commission in 2004. Federal communications commission allows the unlicensed users to access both the very high frequency (VHF) and the ultra‐high frequency channels in TVWS. On the other hand, broadband power line communication (BPLC) has drawn the researchers' attention over the last decade as a high‐speed indoor communication technology. One application for BPLC is the multimedia service in smart grid applications. In this article, we present an overview of the standards, regulations, and channel models of the TVWS and BPLC as 2 separate technologies. We then propose the deployment of the BPLC technology in the TVWS VHF band to build up the white BPLC (WBPLC) communication systems. The WBPLC incorporates the TVWS and the BPLC technologies into multiple‐input multiple‐output communication systems in the VHF band. The simulation results show significant throughput enhancement in the WBPLC over both the TVWS and BPLC communication systems, indicating that WBPLC can be a promising technology to serve the growing needs for the multimedia services in future smart grids.

Comparative Study on Application Performance of PLC of Electric Energy Data Acquisition System

The electric energy data acquisition system is an important part of smart grid construction, and as well it is the essentail platform and core support of intelligent electricity service system. As the “neural network” of electric energy data acquisition system, the communication technology plays a vital role for improving the system performance. In this paper, we performed a comparative test associated with the application performance of electric energy data acquire solution, whilst considing both narrowband power line communication (PLC) and broadband PLC technologies. While comparing the test resuls in both laboratory ideal environment and comprehensive interference environment, it provides an important data support to master the performance of different PLC technologies in electric energy data acquisition system.

Binary CDMA 기반의 AMI 시스템 설계 및 구현

세계 각국에서 에너지 문제를 해결하고 새로운 성장 동력을 발굴하기위해 스마트 그리드에 대한 관심이 증대되고 있으며 관련 기술 확보에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 그 중 AMI(Advanced Metering Infrastructure)는 가장 먼저 구축되어야 하며 스마트 그리드의 핵심 요소로 주목 받고 있다. 우리나라에서도 제주도 스마트 그리드 실증단지에서 다양한 기술을 접목해 기술개발과 실증을 진행 중에 있으며 한국전력에서는 광대역 전력선 통신 기술을 중심으로 인프라 구축이 활발하게 진행 중에 있다. 전력선 통신 기술을 이용한 AMI 시스템은 별도의 통신회선을 구축하지 않고 전력공급 라인을 이용할 수 있어 전력회사 입장에서 이상적인 방법이나 통신을 위해 고려된 인프라가 아니므로 통신이 불가능한 지역이 발생한다. 본 논문은 Binary CDMA와 전력선통신 기술을 동시에 이용하여 AMI 시스템을 구축하기 위한 요구사항을 분석하고 Binary CDMA를 중심으로 기본 통신 프로토콜을 설계 하고, 네트워크 관리, 중계 기능을 구현하였다. 이를 통해 Ad-hoc 기술인 Binary CDMA 고유 기술을 AMI 시스템에 적용하기위한 방안을 도출하였으며 유선(전력선통신)/무선(Binary CDMA)을 동시에 활용할 수 있는 시스템을 구축할 수 있었다. To solve the energy problem and finding new growth engines, interest for the smart grid is increasing and related technologies are making great efforts to secure in the world. AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) Among them is the first to be constructed and getting attention as a key component of smart grid. A fusion of various technologies in technology development and demonstration is underway on Jeju Island Smart Grid Demonstration Complex in Korea, and focusing on broadband power line communication technology infrastructure is actively underway in Korea Electric Power Corporation. AMI system using power line communication technology without building a separate communication lines are available for power supply lines, but communication is impossible in occurs because admission to the power company or the ideal infrastructure for communication is not considered. In this paper, we analyze the requirements to build AMI system using Binary CDMA and powerline communications technology, and design the basic communication protocol based on Binary CDMA, implement network management and relay feature. By doing so, ways to apply Ad-hoc Binary CDMA indigenous technology to the AMI system were derived, and could build a system to make use of Wired (PLC) and wireless (Binary CDMA) simultaneously.

The Design of the Ethernet Meter Reading System Based on Broadband Power Line

According to the current national conditions and the intelligent communities’ requirements on the electric energy metering system based on the broadband power line communication (PLC), this paper introduces a design program for achieving the remote meter reading through the broadband PLC technology. The system takes the high-performance single chip microcomputer and the Ethernet controller RTL8019AS as the core, the low-voltage power line as the medium of data communication, and makes the electronic meters access to the Ethernet via the broadband power line, thereby achieving the remote automatic meter reading. The multi-functional low-voltage power line remote meter reading system constituted by this system and the backstage management system together will have broad application prospects. In addition, this paper also makes a preliminary study on the reliability of the meter reading system.

Radio-Frequency Common-Mode Noise Propagation Model for Power-Line Cable

Electromagnetic-interference (EMI) radiation from a power-line communications (PLC) network has been a major concern for the widespread use of broadband PLC technology. It is also well known that the dominant radiation mode of the PLC network is common mode (CM) by nature. Therefore, for electromagnetic-compatibility planning purposes, knowledge of the CM noise propagation path of the power line in the frequency range of 1 to 30 MHz is essential to provide insight of EMI radiation emitted by the power line. Based on a two-current-probe measurement approach, the CM noise propagation model for a three-wire power-line cable can be derived and represented by an equivalent two-wire CM transmission line. The equivalent CM noise propagation model allows us to predict the CM noise current on the power line with reasonable accuracy. The model will serve as a valuable tool in the future to identify effective ways to suppress EMI radiation from the PLC network.
