Optically induced charge-transfer in donor-acceptor-substituted p- and m- C2B10H12 carboranes

Icosahedral carboranes, C2B10H12, have long been considered to be aromatic but the extent of conjugation between these clusters and their substituents is still being debated. m- and p-Carboranes are compared with m- and p-phenylenes as conjugated bridges in optical functional chromophores with a donor and an acceptor as substituents here. The absorption and fluorescence data for both carboranes from experimental techniques (including femtosecond transient absorption, time-resolved fluorescence and broadband fluorescence upconversion) show that the absorption and emission processes involve strong intramolecular charge transfer between the donor and acceptor substituents via the carborane cluster. From quantum chemical calculations on these carborane systems, the charge transfer process depends on the relative torsional angles of the donor and acceptor groups where an overlap between the two frontier orbitals exists in the bridging carborane cluster.

Direct Determination of the Rate of Intersystem Crossing in a Near-IR Luminescent Cr(III) Triazolyl Complex.

A detailed understanding of the dynamics of photoinduced processes occurring in the electronic excited state is essential in informing the rational design of photoactive transition-metal complexes. Here, the rate of intersystem crossing in a Cr(III)-centered spin-flip emitter is directly determined through the use of ultrafast broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy (FLUPS). In this contribution, we combine 1,2,3-triazole-based ligands with a Cr(III) center and report the solution-stable complex [Cr(btmp)2]3+ (btmp = 2,6-bis(4-phenyl-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl-methyl)pyridine) (13+), which displays near-infrared (NIR) luminescence at 760 nm (τ = 13.7 μs, ϕ = 0.1%) in fluid solution. The excited-state properties of 13+ are probed in detail through a combination of ultrafast transient absorption (TA) and femtosecond-to-picosecond FLUPS. Although TA spectroscopy allows us to observe the evolution of phosphorescent excited states within the doublet manifold, more significantly and for the first time for a complex of Cr(III), we utilize FLUPS to capture the short-lived fluorescence from initially populated quartet excited states immediately prior to the intersystem crossing process. The decay of fluorescence from the low-lying 4MC state therefore allows us to assign a value of (823 fs)-1 to the rate of intersystem crossing. Importantly, the sensitivity of FLUPS to only luminescent states allows us to disentangle the rate of intersystem crossing from other closely associated excited-state events, something which has not been possible in the spectroscopic studies previously reported for luminescent Cr(III) systems.

A stronger acceptor decreases the rates of charge transfer: ultrafast dynamics and on/off switching of charge separation in organometallic donor-bridge-acceptor systems.

To unravel the role of driving force and structural changes in directing the photoinduced pathways in donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) systems, we compared the ultrafast dynamics in novel DBAs which share a phenothiazine (PTZ) electron donor and a Pt(ii) trans-acetylide bridge (-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Pt-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-), but bear different acceptors conjugated into the bridge (naphthalene-diimide, NDI; or naphthalene-monoimide, NAP). The excited state dynamics were elucidated by transient absorption, time-resolved infrared (TRIR, directly following electron density changes on the bridge/acceptor), and broadband fluorescence-upconversion (FLUP, directly following sub-picosecond intersystem crossing) spectroscopies, supported by TDDFT calculations. Direct conjugation of a strong acceptor into the bridge leads to switching of the lowest excited state from the intraligand 3IL state to the desired charge-separated 3CSS state. We observe two surprising effects of an increased strength of the acceptor in NDI vs. NAP: a ca. 70-fold slow-down of the 3CSS formation-(971 ps)-1vs. (14 ps)-1, and a longer lifetime of the 3CSS (5.9 vs. 1 ns); these are attributed to differences in the driving force ΔGet, and to distance dependence. The 100-fold increase in the rate of intersystem crossing-to sub-500 fs-by the stronger acceptor highlights the role of delocalisation across the heavy-atom containing bridge in this process. The close proximity of several excited states allows one to control the yield of 3CSS from ∼100% to 0% by solvent polarity. The new DBAs offer a versatile platform for investigating the role of bridge vibrations as a tool to control excited state dynamics.

Unveiling the double triplet nature of the 2Ag state in conjugated stilbenoid compounds to achieve efficient singlet fission.

In this investigation, the excited-state evolution in a series of all-trans stilbenoid compounds, displaying a low-lying dark singlet state of 2Ag-like symmetry nearly degenerate with the bright 1Bu state, was unveiled by employing advanced ultrafast spectroscopies while probing the effect of solvent polarizability. Together with the dual emission, femtosecond transient absorption and broadband fluorescence up-conversion disclosed the double nature of the 2Ag-like state showing both singlet features, a lifetime typical of a singlet and the ability to emit, and a triplet character, exhibiting a triplet-like absorption spectrum. The ultrafast formation (in hundreds of femtoseconds) from the non-relaxed upper singlet state led to the identification of 2Ag as the correlated triplet pair of singlet fission. The spectral difference obtained by comparison of transient absorption peaks of the 2Ag (1TT) and the triplet states was found to be in remarkable agreement with the observed triplet yield and the 1(TT) separation rate constant. Indeed, this spectral shift provided an experimental method to gain qualitative insight into the ease of separation of the 1(TT) and the relative SF efficiency. The highly conjugated polyene-like structures enable the ultrafast formation of the double triplet, but then the large binding energy prevents the triplet separation and thus the effective completion of singlet fission. Even though thermodynamically feasible for all the investigated stilbenoids according to TD-DFT calculations, singlet fission resulted to occur efficiently in the case of 1-(pyridyl-4-ylethenyl)-4-(p-nitrostyryl)benzene and nitro-styrylfuran with the triplet yield reaching 120% and 140%, respectively, triggered by their greatly enhanced intramolecular charge transfer character relative to the other compounds in the series.

Resonant Band-Edge Emissive States in Strongly Confined CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanoplatelets

Strongly confined, fully inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are of great promise for light-emitting devices in the blue spectral range owing to their high photoluminescence quantum yields. A combination of broadband fluorescence up-conversion and transient absorption spectroscopies was used to study early exciton dynamics in quasi-1D CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (3 × 4 × 23 nm3, NPls). This allowed to reveal emitting band-edge states in the NPls that form instantaneously upon photoexcitation and then relax within the first picosecond to lower energy confined hole states (CHSs). The influence of the pump excitation intensity on the latter process was further scrutinized. The band-edge population lifetime was found to increase with the rise of the photon fluence due to CHS filling. When the concentration of NPls in solution becomes very high, nanoparticles overlap, resulting in a decrease in their external absorption cross-section and an increase in the emission Stokes shift due to photon reabsorption.

On the intersystem crossing rate in a Platinum(II) donor-bridge-acceptor triad.

The rates of ultrafast intersystem crossing in acceptor-bridge-donor molecules centered on Pt(II) acetylides are investigated. Specifically, a Pt(II) trans-acetylide triad NAP--Pt--Ph-CH2-PTZ [1], with acceptor 4-ethynyl-N-octyl-1,8-naphthalimide (NAP) and donor phenothiazine (PTZ), is examined in detail. We have previously shown that optical excitation in [1] leads to a manifold of singlet charge-transfer states, S*, which evolve via a triplet charge-transfer manifold into a triplet state 3NAP centered on the acceptor ligand and partly to a charge-separated state 3CSS (NAP--Pt-PTZ+). A complex cascade of electron transfer processes was observed, but intersystem crossing (ISC) rates were not explicitly resolved due to lack of spin selectivity of most ultrafast spectroscopies. Here we revisit the question of ISC with a combination and complementary analysis of (i) transient absorption, (ii) ultrafast broadband fluorescence upconversion, FLUP, which is only sensitive to emissive states, and (iii) femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy, FSR. Raman resonance conditions allow us to observe S* and 3NAP exclusively by FSR, through vibrations which are pertinent only to these two states. This combination of methods enabled us to extract the intersystem crossing rates that were not previously accessible. Multiple timescales (1.6 ps to ∼20 ps) are associated with the rise of triplet species, which can now be assigned conclusively to multiple ISC pathways from a manifold of hot charge-transfer singlet states. The analysis is consistent with previous transient infrared spectroscopy data. A similar rate of ISC, up to 20 ps, is observed in the trans-acetylide NAP--Pt--Ph [2] which maintains two acetylide groups across the platinum center but lacks a donor unit, whilst removal of one acetylide group in mono-acetylide NAP--Pt-Cl [3] leads to >10-fold deceleration of the intersystem crossing process. Our work provides insight on the intersystem crossing dynamics of the organo-metallic complexes, and identifies a general method based on complementary ultrafast spectroscopies to disentangle complex spin, electronic and vibrational processes following photoexcitation.

Direct Observation of Shallow Trap States in Thermal Equilibrium with Band‐Edge Excitons in Strongly Confined CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanoplatelets

AbstractLead halide perovskites exhibit great potential for light‐emitting devices. Enhanced photoluminescence (PL) is obtained in perovskite materials of reduced dimensionalities due to the large exciton binding energy. However, as the nanocrystal size is reduced, the surface‐to‐volume ratio increases, leading to an abundance of surface defects. Here, a fast PL decay, 3–10 ps, is observed in quasi‐1D CsPbBr3 perovskite nanoplatelets using broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy. This decay is attributed to reversible trapping of band‐edge excitons into dark states that lie close to the band edge. A simplified model is proposed to further confirm the presence of shallow traps and to fit the data obtained by ultrafast spectroscopy for multiple samples. Finally, the presence of deep trap states in aged nanoplatelets is revealed, likely arising from desorption of the organic capping ligands from the surface. Exciton trapping into these states is slower, 20–30 ps, but leads to a decrease in the photoluminescence quantum yield. These results may not only explain the extended luminescence lifetimes that have been reported for perovskite nanocrystals but also demonstrate the potential of combining ultrafast transient absorption and fluorescence up‐conversion to obtain a full description of the spectroscopic properties of the material.

Ultrafast Exciton Self‐Trapping and Delocalization in Cycloparaphenylenes: The Role of Excited‐State Symmetry in Electron‐Vibrational Coupling

Upon photon absorption, π-conjugated organics are apt to undergo ultrafast structural reorganization via electron-vibrational coupling during non-adiabatic transitions. Ultrafast nuclear motions modulate local planarity and quinoid/benzenoid characters within conjugated backbones, which control primary events in the excited states, such as localization, energy transfer, and so on. Femtosecond broadband fluorescence upconversion measurements were conducted to investigate exciton self-trapping and delocalization in cycloparaphenylenes as ultrafast structural reorganizations are achieved via excited-state symmetry-dependent electron-vibrational coupling. By accessing two high-lying excited states, one-photon and two-photon allowed states, a clear discrepancy in the initial time-resolved fluorescence spectra and the temporal dynamics/spectral evolution of fluorescence spectra were monitored. Combined with quantum chemical calculations, a novel insight into the effect of the excited-state symmetry on ultrafast structural reorganization and exciton self-trapping in the emerging class of π-conjugated materials is provided.

Two-Step Charge Separation Passing Through the Partial Charge-Transfer State in a Molecular Dyad.

Charge separation (CS) in molecular systems usually takes place in weakly coupled donor-acceptor dyads where an electron charge moves from the donor to the acceptor in the local excited state of a chromophore. Herein, we present a two-step charge-separation process in a newly synthesized diketopyrrolopyrrole-pyrrolopyrrole (DPP-PP) dyad (AD), which starts from the initial photoexcited bright exciton and goes through a partial charge-transfer (CT) state before finally reaching the charge-separated (CS) state. The evolving CT character in the excited state is demonstrated through the complementary use of transient absorption, broad-band fluorescence upconversion, and transient impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy. The bright exciton state of the dyad relaxes to a partial CT state with 1 and 20 ps during solvent and structural fluctuations in toluene, respectively, and with 700 fs for the solvent fluctuations occurring in tetrahydrofuran. This is evident from the characteristic excited-state absorption spectra and the reduced fluorescence intensity observed on the adiabatic potential energy surface. AD in THF additionally evolves to the diabatic potential energy surface of the CS state, whose absorption spectrum converges to that of a DPP anion for which fluorescence is completely quenched. The trend of shifting for certain vibrational frequencies also supports the proposed CT dynamics and mechanism; furthermore, it gives quantitative insight into the CT characters of the bright state (0.1 e) and intermediate partial CT state (0.5 e), as determined by the linear relationship that exists between the vibrational frequency of the marker modes and the CT character. We have found that as the structure of the bridge between donor and acceptor enables an intermediate level of electronic communication, the charge-separation can rapidly occur through a distinct partial charge-transfer state. It seems that the exceptionally strong electronic communication at positions 2 and 5 of the pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole core is a crucial element for this charge-transfer mechanism, which could be applied to organic photovoltaics or light-emitting diodes requiring efficient charge separation.

Exciton, Biexciton, and Hot Exciton Dynamics in CsPbBr3 Colloidal Nanoplatelets.

Lead halide perovskites have emerged as promising materials for light-emitting devices. Here, we report the preparation of colloidal CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (3 × 4 × 23 nm3) experiencing a strong quasi-one-dimensional quantum confinement. Ultrafast transient absorption and broadband fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopies were employed to scrutinize the carrier and quasiparticle dynamics and to obtain a full description of the spectroscopic properties of the material. An exciton binding energy of 350 meV, an absorption cross section at 3.2 eV of 5.0 ± 0.3 × 10-15 cm-2, an efficient biexciton Auger recombination lifetime of 9 ± 1 ps, and a biexciton binding energy of 74 ± 4 meV were determined. Moreover, a short-lived emission from hot excitons was observed, which is related to the formation of band-edge excitons. The time constant of both processes is 300 ± 50 fs. These results show that CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets are indeed quite promising for light-emitting technological applications.

Theory of fluorescence spectrum dynamics and its application to determining the relaxation characteristics of the solvent and intramolecular vibrations

A general analytical expression for the transient fluorescence spectrum is derived. The formation of a wave packet in the excited state of a fluorophore is described, assuming that the pump pulse has a Gaussian time-profile. The expression explicitly connects the relaxation characteristics of the medium with the spectral dynamics of a fluorophore. Fitting the expression to experimental spectral dynamics allows obtaining the solvent relaxation function. So far this approach was applicable for the analysis of experimental data when the pump pulse does not populate excited sublevels of intramolecular high-frequency vibrational modes. Here, the approach is generalized to include vibrational relaxation in the excited electronic state. In this case, fitting to the experimental spectral dynamics provides reliable information not only on the solvent relaxation, but also on the relaxation time constants of intramolecular high-frequency vibrational modes. This approach is applied to the excited state dynamics of coumarin 153 in multiple solvents, obtained from broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy.

High sensitivity fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopy of 3MLCT emission of metal-organic complexes

We demonstrate the implementation of a broadband fluorescence up-conversion set-up with high signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range allowing for the detection of weak luminescence from triplet states in Fe(II) NHC complexes. Based on the experimentally determined radiative rates and the emission spectra, these states have dominant MLCT character.

Photophysical Heavy-Atom Effect in Iodinated Metallocorroles: Spin-Orbit Coupling and Density of States.

Excited-state dynamics and electronic structures of Al and Ga corrole complexes were studied as a function of the number of β-pyrrole iodine substituents. Using spectrally broad-band femtosecond-resolved fluorescence upconversion, we determined the kinetics of the Soret fluorescence decay, the concomitant rise and subsequent decay of the Q-band fluorescence, as well as of the accompanying vibrational relaxation. Iodination was found to accelerate all involved processes. The time constant of the internal conversion from the Soret to the Q states decreases from 320-540 to 70-185 fs upon iodination. Vibrational relaxation then occurs with about 15 and 0.36-1.4 ps lifetime for iodine-free and iodinated complexes, respectively. Intersystem crossing to the lowest triplet is accelerated up to 200 times from nanoseconds to 15-24 ps; its rate correlates with the iodine p(π) participation in the corrole π-system and the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength. TDDFT calculations with explicit SOC show that iodination introduces a manifold of low-lying singlet and triplet iodine → corrole charge-transfer (CT) states. These states affect the photophysics by (i) providing a relaxation cascade for the Soret → Q internal conversion and cooling and (ii) opening new SOC pathways whereby CT triplet character is admixed into both Q singlet excited states. In addition, SOC between the higher Q singlet and the Soret triplet is enhanced as the iodine participation in frontier corrole π-orbitals increases. Our observations that iodination of the chromophore periphery affects the whole photocycle by changing the electronic structure, spin-orbit coupling, and the density of states rationalize the "heavy-atom effect" and have implications for controlling excited-state dynamics in a range of triplet photosensitizers.

Solvent and Structural Fluctuations Induced Symmetry-Breaking Charge Transfer in a Porphyrin Triad

This study aims to show that the symmetry-breaking charge transfer (SBCT) in a donor–acceptor–donor (DAD) porphyrin triad occurs via solvent and structural fluctuations measured by using femtosecond broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy, which can directly trace the origin of the emitting state by monitoring its emission dipole moment as a function of time. While the emission dipole moment of the triad in the excited state remains nearly unchanged in nonpolar solvents such as cyclohexane and toluene, it is significantly reduced in polar solvents such as benzonitrile due to a change in the emitting state from quadrupolar (the exciton coupled state) to dipolar symmetry (the relaxed S1 state). The latter state is formed by the SBCT process of DAD via a combination of solvent and structural fluctuations.

Near-Infrared S2 Fluorescence from Deprotonated Möbius Aromatic [32]Heptaphyrin.

This study revealed S2 fluorescence from deprotonated meso-pentafluorophenyl-substituted Möbius aromatic [32]heptaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1.1) that was formed upon treatment of neutral antiaromatic [32]heptephyrin with tetrabutylammonium fluoride. Higher excited-state dynamics and emission were studied by fs-transient absorption spectroscopy and a broad-band fluorescence upconversion technique. This is the first S2 fluorescence from chromophores with twisted Möbius topology, and the observation of S2 fluorescence in the near-infrared region has been unprecedented. The higher excited-state dynamics of neutral and deprotonated [32]heptaphyrins were compared by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy to understand the S2 fluorescence origin. In the antiaromatic [32]heptaphyrin, a fast time component of 65 fs was assigned as an internal conversion process from the SB state to the SQ state, which occurs prior to relaxation to the optically dark, lowest electronic state (SD). Therefore, the SQ state of the antiaromatic [32]heptaphyrin acts as a trap state intervening radiative transitions from the SB state to the S0 state. In deprotonated [32]heptaphyrin, the internal conversion from the SB state to the SQ state proceeds with a slower time constant of 150 fsfor owing to its rigid structure, helping the observation of its S2 fluorescence.

Ultrafast Exciton Delocalization, Localization, and Excimer Formation Dynamics in a Highly Defined Perylene Bisimide Quadruple π-Stack.

An adequately designed, bay-tethered perylene bisimide (PBI) dimer Bis-PBI was synthesized by Pd/Cu-catalyzed Glaser-type oxidative homocoupling of the respective PBI building block. This newly synthesized PBI dimer self-assembles exclusively and with high binding constants of up to 106 M-1 into a discrete π-stack of four chromophores. Steady-state absorption and emission spectra show the signatures of H-type excitonic coupling among the dye units. Broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy (FLUPS) reveals an ultrafast dynamics in the optically excited state. An initially coherent Frenkel exciton state that is delocalized over the whole quadruple stack rapidly (τ = ∼200 fs) loses its coherence and relaxes into an excimer state. Comparison with Frenkel exciton dynamics in PBI dimeric and oligomeric H-aggregates demonstrates that in the quadruple stack coherent exciton propagation is absent due to its short length of aggregates, thereby it has only one relaxation pathway to the excimer state. Furthermore, the absence of pump-power dependence in transient absorption experiments suggests that multiexciton cannot be generated in the quadruple stack, which is in line with time-resolved fluorescence measurements.

Specific Monitoring of Excited-State Symmetry Breaking by Femtosecond Broadband Fluorescence Upconversion Spectroscopy.

Most quadrupolar molecules designed for large two-photon absorption cross section have been shown to undergo symmetry breaking upon excitation to the S1 state. This was originally deduced from their strong fluorescence solvatochromism and later visualized in real time using transient infrared spectroscopy. For molecules not containing clear IR marker modes, however, a specific real-time observation of the symmetry breaking process remains lacking. Here we show that this process can be resolved using broadband fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy by monitoring the instantaneous emission transition dipole moment. This approach is illustrated with measurements performed on two quadrupolar molecules, with only one of them undergoing excited-state symmetry breaking in polar solvents.

S2 Fluorescence from [26]Hexaphyrin Dianion

S2 fluorescence from meso-hexakis(pentafluorophenyl)-substituted [26]hexaphyrin dianion was observed as the first example of expanded porphyrins despite its large molecular size and small HOMO-LUMO gap. The population kinetics among S2, S1, and S0 states have been studied by using femtosecond time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. Broad-band fluorescence upconversion spectroscopy allowed for simultaneous observation of S2 fluorescence decay in the visible region and S1 fluorescence rise in the NIR region, both with a time constant of 0.22 ps. The transient absorption spectroscopy revealed the presence of a direct decay path from the S2 state to the S0 state. The observation of S2 fluorescence from highly conjugated molecular systems is quite rare, and S2 fluorescence beyond 700 nm is also quite rare.

Ultrafast Dynamics of Sb-Corroles: A Combined Vis-Pump Supercontinuum Probe and Broadband Fluorescence Up-Conversion Study.

Corroles are a developing class of tetrapyrrole-based molecules with significant chemical potential and relatively unexplored photophysical properties. We combined femtosecond broadband fluorescence up-conversion and fs broadband Vis-pump Vis-probe spectroscopy to comprehensively characterize the photoreaction of 5,10,15-tris-pentafluorophenyl-corrolato-antimony(V)-trans-difluoride (Sb-tpfc-F2). Upon fs Soret band excitation at ~400 nm, the energy relaxed almost completely to Q band electronic excited states with a time constant of 500 ± 100 fs; this is evident from the decay of Soret band fluorescence at around 430 nm and the rise time of Q band fluorescence, as well as from Q band stimulated emission signals at 600 and 650 nm with the same time constant. Relaxation processes on a time scale of 10 and 20 ps were observed in the fluorescence and absorption signals. Triplet formation showed a time constant of 400 ps, with an intersystem crossing yield from the Q band to the triplet manifold of between 95% and 99%. This efficient triplet formation is due to the spin-orbit coupling of the antimony ion.
