Analysing responsible innovation along a value chain—A single‐cell protein case study

AbstractThe British Standards Institution's Publicly Available Specification 440 (PAS 440) provides a Responsible Innovation Framework (RIF) that companies can use to continuously monitor the societal, environmental and health benefits and risks of their innovations, as well as relevant changes to the supply chain and regulations. PAS 440 is intended to help companies achieve the benefits of innovation in a timely manner and avoid any potential harm or unintended misuse of a new product, process or service. Here, the authors have applied the PAS 440 RIF to a novel single‐cell protein (SCP) animal feed ingredient taking into consideration the perspectives of the value chain partners (VCPs), companies and laboratories involved in an Innovate UK research project. The authors’ findings show how VCPs can use PAS440 to demonstrate that they are innovating responsibly. Using this approach to responsible innovation along the value chain—from manufacturing scale‐up, through regulatory approval, to incorporation in animal feed and from there to food on supermarket shelves—can support the development of innovations that contribute to the economic and environmental sustainability of the animal feed sector. The authors conclude that the PAS 440 Guide can facilitate the progress of a new product throughout a value chain and contribute to coordinating responsible behaviour among companies involved in the value chain.

The issue of carbon emissions from building materials is an important issue in today's society and concrete buildings are one of the main contributors to carbon emissions. As a result, steel construction is very popular in modern society. However, with improvements in concrete technology, it is gradually starting to gain acceptance again. The focus of this review article is to discuss the dominant role of steel and concrete in construction. This paper adopts the method of literature analysis and reading. At the same time, the data of this study come from SteelConstruction.info (The free encyclopedia for UK steel construction information), British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) and Steel Construction Institute (SCI) and The British Standard Institute. The following conclusions can be drawn: Steel structures are getting more and more attention. Steel structure and cement play an important role in construction.

BSI LM2

Abstract BSI LM2 is an aluminum-silicon-copper casting alloy (3xx.x series). It is essentially a pressure die casting alloy with excellent casting characteristics. Castings made from BSI LM2 have a higher tensile strength and better machinability than pressure die castings made from either BSI LM6 or BSI LM20. The use of BSI LM2 is not recommended for corrosive environments unless protection of the casting by a process such as anodizing is used. It is better in such circumstances to consider the use of either BSI LM6 or BSI LM20. BSI LM2 has a slightly lower density than BSI LM24. Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in Brazil: Drivers and best practices towards to circular economy based on European Union and BSI

Public policies, incentives, and infrastructure in MSWM are top-down instruments that can support a circular economy. This article aims to identify the factors that influence the recovery of materials and best practices (BPs) of the most efficient municipalities in Brazil, and evaluated the alignment with brazilian legislation and european guidelines (Green Deal and British Standards Institution). This research includes a multiple linear regression, case studies and documentary research. The 30 identified BPs in Brazil have 63% compliance with the Brazilian law and only 23% with principles european recommendation. The high level of adherence of municipal practices with Brazilian legislation is observed in the generation, sorting and final disposal phases; however, in the collection process, practices meet only 29% of legal requirements. When compared to the high level required by BSI and Green Deal, which should be a standard to be followed in this country's future, there is much to be done in all stages, but mainly in the final destination, where incineration and landfills are regarded as the final strategy, undermining the circular economy in Brazil.Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version).

Intrasession repeatability and agreement of a new method to measure the foveal fixation axis.

Ophthalmic lens adaptation, particularly with progressive addition lenses, requires accurate measurements of the patient nasopupillary distance (NPD) and interpupillary distance (IPD), which are usually collected using the pupil centre as a reference. However, differences between the pupil centre and visual or foveal axis could induce some subsidiary effects of correcting lenses. This study aimed to assess the intrasession repeatability of a new prototype (Ergofocus®; Lentitech, Barakaldo, Spain) that can measure the foveal fixation axis (FFA) distance and assess the agreement with the NPD measurements collected using a traditional method (frame ruler). The FFA at far and near distances was measured three consecutive times in 39 healthy volunteers to determine the intrasession repeatability according to the British Standards Institute and International Organization for Standardization. Additionally, the FFA and NPD (standard frame ruler) were measured in 71 healthy volunteers and compared using Bland-Altman analysis. Two blinded experienced practitioners conducted each FFA and NPD measurement. The FFA measurements showed acceptable repeatability at far distances (right eye (RE): Sw = 1.16 ± 0.76 mm and coefficient of variation (CV) = 3.92 ± 2.51%; left eye (LE) Sw = 1.11 ± 0.79 mm and CV = 3.76 ± 2.51%) and at near distances (RE: Sw = 0.97 ± 0.85 mm and CV = 3.52 ± 3.02%; LE: Sw = 1.17 ± 0.96 mm and CV = 4.54 ± 3.72%). Additionally, agreement with the NPD showed large differences at far distances (RE: -2.15 ± 2.34, LoA = -6.73 to 2.43 mm (P < 0.001); LE: -0.61 ± 2.62, LoA = -5.75 to 4.53 mm (P = 0.052)) and near distances (RE: -3.08 ± 2.80, LoA -8.57 to 2.42 mm (P < 0.001); LE: -2.97 ± 3.97, LoA: -10.75 to 4.80 mm (P < 0.001)). FFA measurements showed clinically acceptable repeatability at both far and near distances. Agreement with the NPD measured using a standard frame ruler showed significant differences, suggesting that both measurements are not interchangeable in clinical practice to prescribe and center ophthalmic lenses. Further research is necessary to assess the impact of FFA measurement in ophthalmic lens prescriptions.

Sustainability indicators to achieve a circular economy: A case study of renewable energy and plastic waste recycling corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects in Thailand

To promote their public image, a growing number of companies have adopted corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects that benefit various social interests. As such, it is imperative to audit the social, environmental, and economic dimensions of CSR projects for their sustainable development. This paper presents an assessment of three CSR projects undertaken by the energy industry (renewable energy) and commercial sector (plastic waste recycling) in Thailand to transition towards the circular economy (CE) business model. A set of CE indicators were selected from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development: WBCSD 2018 European Commission 2018, and British Standard Institution 2017 and compared with the sustainability indicators listed in the ISO 26000:2010 (referenced in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI): G4 Guidelines). These indicators were established to assess the readiness of companies to implement sustainable CSR projects. The assessment results showed that the CSR projects in the case study were conducive to the CE model, as most of the CE concepts evaluated by the performance indicators were already in place. This study aimed to support the implementation of CSR projects that contribute to adopting a CE business model and determine key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure and monitor CSR projects in terms of their CE concepts. The sustainability KPIs proposed in this study can serve as a set of guidelines to drive CE strategy adoption and allow for the identification of sustainable CSR projects that can simultaneously offer more value creation and satisfaction for all stakeholders, including society and the companies, while reducing environmental impacts. This paper integrates CSR into a CE approach that results in business sustainability and contributes to Sustainability Development Goal (SDG) targets.

The relationship between static and dynamic occlusion based on the relationship between anterior and posterior teeth and the occlusion scheme in dentistry students

Occlusion is important in the mastication process. Tooth occlusion is generally classified into static occlusion and dynamic occlusion. Static occlusion is visible through the relation of both anterior and posterior teeth. Incisor relationships were classified according to the British Standard Institution (BSI), while Angle was classified based on the relationship of the first molars in permanent teeth. The classification of occlusion according to Angle and BSI is based on the description of the shape of the arch, tooth position, and tooth contact in the intercuspal position. This study aims to determine the distribution of static occlusion based on the relationship between anterior and posterior teeth as well as dynamic occlusion distribution based on the occlusion scheme and the relationship between static and dynamic occlusion in students of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra. It is a descriptive-analytic with a cross-sectional study design. The sample consisted of 100 students with a complete set of teeth. Each sample was examined using shim stock and articulation paper. The results of statistical using the chisquare test showed a significant relationship between static and dynamic occlusion based on the relationship between anterior teeth (p 0.05) and the relationship between posterior teeth (p 0.05).KEYWORDS: occlusion, static occlusion, dynamic occlusion

Transcarpal Motor Conduction Velocity: Repeatability and Application in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Conduction velocity of the short segment of the median motor nerve, across wrist (transcarpal motor conduction velocity (TCMCV)), has been used to increase diagnostic yield in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, repeatability of this parameter has not been studied till date. It has not been used as an indicator of response to treatment. Using surface stimulation techniques, it is difficult to localize the sites of stimulation of transcarpal segment of median nerve in palm. As a result, small errors in measurements of TCMCV can be magnified and variability of TCMCV may occur on successive measurements. Despite this possible variation, TCMCV can be a useful tool for assessing response to therapy, if its repeatability is assessed and a cut-off value determined for a significant change in nerve conduction velocity. In this study, it was determined whether TCMCV is repeatable. If found to be repeatable, we show a method to determine the cut-off value of the change in this parameter for it to be considered significant. Difference between values of TCMCV on successive measurements was obtained in hands of 26 controls. Repeatability of this parameter was determined in this control population following criteria of British Standards Institution. In 19 patients of CTS, treated with intracarpal steroid injection, pre-treatment and post-treatment values of TCMCV, and of symptom severity scale (SSS) and functional status scale (FSS), were obtained at 1, 2, and 3 months after treatment. Repeat measurements of TCMCV were made in each hand of all controls. After applying criteria of British Standards Institution, to such recordings, TCMCV was found to be repeatable and the cut-off value for significant change determined. According to this cut-off value, 4 patients of CTS showed improvement in TCMCV, with consistent improvement in SSS and FSS. Change in TCMCV corroborated qualitatively with changes in SSS and FSS. Repeatability of TCMCV can be assessed by criteria of British Standards Institution and a cut-off value determined to use it as an indicator of response to treatment in CTS.

An Introduction to Cordra

Cordra is a digital object server that can function as a key infrastructural piece in FAIR DO (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable digital object) implementations. Cordra manages JSON records and payloads as typed digital objects identified by handles. Cordra is neither a database nor an indexer, but it integrates the two and provides a unified interface. Cordra is intended to support both quick prototyping as well as production systems. For prototyping, Cordra makes it easy to get up and running rapidly with a digital object server. A potential Cordra administrator can download Cordra and very quickly have a server which supports creation, search, and retrieval of digital objects with resolvable identifiers. The server supports Digital Object Interface Protocol (DOIP) and HTTP APIs out of the box, as well as an immediately usable prototype user interface. Cordra saves substantial development time as it comes with ready-made functionality ranging from user authentication and access control to information validation, enrichment, storing, and indexing. By default, Cordra is configured to store objects on the local file system of the machine and use embedded Apache Lucene for indexing. Simply by editing type definitions in Cordra's user interface, the administrator can start changing the behavior of the APIs and user interface in real time for experimentation, including adding custom operations. For production use, Cordra allows intensive extension and customization of the processes underlying the digital object server: how digital objects are stored and indexed, how they are validated and enriched, how users authenticate, when and to whom to give access to objects, and what custom operations can be performed. In production Cordra is run at scale, supporting high reliability and performance; among other options Cordra supports MongoDB and Amazon S3 for storage, and Elasticsearch and Apache Solr for indexing. By definition of the underlying types and operations, Cordra is intended to serve directly as the API backend for a production application. This talk will cover basic Cordra features as well as customization/configuration basics. Examples of current use will be shown, including the use of the Digital Object Interface Protocol (DOIP), for which Cordra serves as a reference implementation. Current users of Cordra include the Derivatives Service Bureau (DSB), which uses Cordra as part of its backend to manage the automated generation of International Securities Identification Numbers (ISINs) for OTC derivatives in the financial services sector; and the British Standard Institute (BSI) whose Identify service for construction product manufacturers aims to assign a Universal Persistent Identification Number (UPIN) "for every product that is specified and incorporated in a building structure". The DSB, Cordra users since 2017, has a production system with over 80 million identified digital objects which receives millions of searches each month. Geotechnical Evaluation of Road Failure along 20th Street BDPA, Benin City, Nigeria

This work investigated the cause of road failure using geotechnical analysis along the 20th Street, BDPA, Benin-city, Nigeria. Soil samples from the failed section of the road were analyzed to ascertain their particle size distribution, limit liquid, plastic limit, maximum dry density, optimum moisture content and California bearing ratio using the British Standard Institution (BS 1377 1990). The result from the particle size distribution analysis showed that soils were well graded (GW) with percentage fines ranging from 26 to 49.7%, specific gravity from 2.4 to 2.6, liquid limit from 21.52-29.79%, plastic limit ranged from 11.73-18.80%, plasticity index 8.29-12.49% and California bearing ratio(unsoaked) from 9-29%. The compaction test results showed that the Maximum Dry Density (MDD) ranged from 1.7mg/m3-1.8mg/m3 and Optimum Maximum Content from 11-14%. It was found that there is a significant difference between the geotechnical characteristics of the soil and the standard for geotechnical characteristics set by the Federal Ministry of Works. This led to the conclusion that the soil geotechnical characteristics is a causative factor of road failure as well as the geology. Hence, it was recommended that the geotechnical and geological characteristics of sub-grades and fill materials be taken into consideration during road construction.

Does exudate viscosity affect its rate of absorption into wound dressings?

Exudate is a vital component of healing wounds. There are differences between acute and chronic exudate, with the latter seen as highly toxic to the healing environment. Wound exudate assessment is not easy for clinicians. The viscosity of wound fluid/exudate is as important as its quantity. Wound fluid viscosity increases when it contains more protein. As wound dressings exhibit a variety of fluid-handling mechanisms, it is important to understand how they interact with the different exudate types, which may alter the wound/dressing interface. This knowledge will ensure a healing wound environment that is beneficial, not one that leaves harmful exudate on the wound surface. This study aimed to evaluate if the viscosity of exudate affected absorption time in four wound dressing types. This study evaluated the viscosities of two solutions and their effect on the absorption times of four dressing types. The viscosities of the solutions were calculated using Ostwald viscometers, then 2 ml of each of these liquids was applied to each of the four dressing types and repeated 10 times for each dressing, as per British Standards Institution requirements. The parameters for temperature and frequency were applied, and the absorption times recorded. A two-way repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to examine if exudate viscosity and dressing type, or their interaction, affected the absorption time. The results indicated that the viscosity of the solution alone had a significant effect on absorption time (p<0.01), and that the combined effect of dressing type and viscosity also affected absorption (p<0.01). The type of dressing alone was found to have a significant effect on absorption time (p<0.01). When looking at the between-subject effects of the dressings (between the four types) the only non-significant finding was between two dressings-the superabsorbent and the moderate (foam) absorbing dressing (p=0.097). All other dressings had a between-subject effect of (p<0.01). A significant difference in absorption times was found in this investigation of dressing types and viscosity of test solutions. The greater the viscosity of the fluid, the longer it took for it to be absorbed into all dressing types tested. This delay was not determined simply by the dressing or by the viscosity of the fluid, but likely to be a combination of the mode of action of the dressing, its pore size and particulate composition of the exudate, all of which require further investigation.

Topicality. The main approaches to the formation of a circular economy are consider in the article. The principles of building a circular economy are reveal. The genesis of the "circular economy" is studied: from the origin of the idea to modern trends. The modern understanding of circular economy and its practical application in evolving economic systems is present, including various features and contributions of different concepts that share the idea of closed cycles. Aim and tasks. To reveal the peculiarities of the formation of the paradigm of the circular economy at the global, regional and national levels of the model of the circular economy in the conditions of inclusive development. The tasks are to reveal a holistic view of the new model of formation and development of the economy. Research results. Model analysed Model K. Whitman: differences between linear and circular economy. A parallel is draw with the impact on the environmental well-being of countries. The publications of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and their joint developments with McKinsey Company, in particular, economic and business opportunities for the transition to a restorative, circular model of the economy. The main approaches of technology of reuse of re-X (recycling, remanufacturing, reuse, etc.) technologies as components of circular economy are studied. Five approaches to resource cycles are identify�, which are the basis of the overall strategy, the archetypes of innovation of the circular business model. The reports of the World Economic Forum and the PACE with an emphasis on the paradigm shift in world production regarding the concept of circular production are analyse. The guidelines of the British Standards Institute and the International Organization for Standardization that implement a circular economy strategy are considered. The main directions of transformation of the economies of the world, in particular, the EU, USA, China, Ukraine and their targets are studied. Government and legislative initiatives on the way of forming a circular economy, solving environmental problems and waste recycling are highlight. Examples of financial support and initiatives of financial governmental and non-governmental institutions are given. The article focuses on the research of the world's leading scientists, international institutions, and analytical reports on the implementation of the concept of circular economy. Conclusion. Thus, the circular economy is one of the directions of development of the global economic space, built as a model of interaction of all actors of international economic relations in the conditions of development of inclusive economy and society. The circular economy is not an unambiguous process that can be solved globally without the involvement of all stakeholders, it is also the main engine for achieving the Kyoto Protocol, sustainable development goals, solving the problem of limited resources, forming a culture of waste management, etc.

Comparison of the predictability of the ultimate axial strength of elliptical CFST columns using existing square and circular section-based code formulae

The elliptical hollow section has been recently included in the family of the structural steel hollow sections. This type of steel section is also used in the production of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) members. For the elliptical CFST compression members, there is no specific design formulation in the current provisions, except the code called “Technical code for concrete-filled tubular structures” prepared by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China. However, the formula proposed by this code for estimating the ultimate strength of the elliptical CFST columns was achieved by modifying the formula for predicting the ultimate strength of the square CFST members. In this context, the objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the existing code formulae that were proposed for the axially loaded CFST columns with rectangular or circular sections to that of columns with an elliptical section. To this, a data repository consisting of 97 experimentally tested elliptical CFST columns was compiled. Herein, the main criterion in the selection of the data was the axial loading condition. Thereafter, the prediction performance of these code formulae was assessed in terms of statistical parameters. The results indicated that the code formulae proposed for the circular-sectioned CFST columns have better prediction capability than that suggested for the rectangular sections. Among these design formulae proposed for the CFST columns with a circular section, the formulae recommended by the American Institute of Steel Construction, British Standard Institute, Canadian Standards Association, and Eurocode 4 performed the best prediction capability. These code formulae had the lowest mean absolute percent error values and R-squared values of higher than 0.8.

Roasted Pearl Millet Flour (RoPMF) Improved the Mineral Composition of Beef Sausages

Meat products which are cheaper and have better nutritional composition are crucial for reducing hunger and promoting good health and wellbeing of humans. This study investigated the nutritional, physicochemical, sensory, and formulation cost of beef sausages prepared using roasted pearl millet flour (RoPMF). A complete randomized design was used to assign roasted pearl millet flour (0% RoPMF, 5% RoPMF, 10% RoPMF and 15% RoPMF) to meats. Other ingredients were added in equal amounts. The official methods of analysis of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists and British Standard Institute procedures were used for mineral and sensory analysis, respectively. There were significant differences (P&lt;0.05) in the mineral composition of the beef sausages. The iron, magnesium and calcium contents of the RoPMF sausages were generally higher than the control (0% RoPMF) sausages. The potassium contents of 5% RoPMF and 15% RoPMF sausages were similar (P&gt;0.05) to the control. The 5% RoPMF sausages had the highest zinc content of 35.29±0.18 mg/kg. There were no significant differences (P&gt;0.05) in the sensory (color, flavor intensity, flavor liking, texture, tenderness, juiciness) scores and overall acceptability of the beef sausages. The ash, fat, carbohydrate, water holding capacity, and peroxide value of the beef sausages were not affected (P&gt;0.05) when RoPMF was used for the formulation. In general, the protein content of the RoPMF beef sausages was not affected negatively. The cost of producing a kilogram of beef sausages was GHS 31.50 ($5.47), GHS 31.10 ($5.40), GHS 30.70 ($5.33), and GHS 30.30 ($5.26) for 0% RoPMF, 5% RoPMF, 10% RoPMF, and 15% RoPMF beef sausages, respectively. It is concluded that the formulation of beef sausages with roasted pearl millet flour did not negatively affect the sensory characteristics of the sausages, but improved it mineral composition and reduced production cost.
