Big data analytics and lean practices: impact on sustainability performance

Academics and practitioners have identified the potential of Big Data Analytics capability (BDAC) and Lean Social-Technical system to improve sustainability performance. Nonetheless, there is still a limited understanding of how companies’ BDAC efforts can contribute to Lean Practices and transform this relationship into sustainability-related benefits, impacting economic, social, and environmental performance. A comprehensive conceptual model to assess the mediating effect of Lean Social Practices (LSP) and Lean Technical Practices (LTP) on the relationship between BDAC and economic, social, and environmental performance was developed and tested with a sample of 108 respondents, from Brazilian industrial companies. The results obtained using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), showed that the relationship between BDAC and economic performance is completely mediated by LTP. However, LSP does not mediate the relationships between BDAC and sustainability performance. The findings provide guidance to companies regarding resource allocations for BDAC and Lean to foster sustainability.

Management of industrial service projects developed by Brazilian companies and their relationship with critical success factors

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the project management of industrial services developed by Brazilian companies and their relationship with Critical Success Factors. Theoretical framework – Through a content analysis, Critical Success Factors were aligned to industrial service management and PMBOK project management guidelines.Design/methodology/approach – To develop the study, a survey on industrial service project management was carried out on industrial service professionals. Survey data were analyzed through frequency distribution and ranked using the TOPSIS technique. Findings – The results showed that the companies mentioned use PMBOK guidelines, however, they can be improved. Comparatively, the project schedule management is highlighted; the five CSFs that are considered more relevant are related to the scope, schedule, costs, integration, communications and resource management. Research, Practical & Social implications – The results provide insights for organizational practices and guide management improvements, showing the main opportunities for improvement in the companies analyzed. Originality/value – The literature fails to provide an analysis of Brazilian industrial service companies. In this sense, this study provides a valuable contribution to the field.Keywords: Industrial Services Management; Critical Success Factors; Project Management; Brazil.

Climate Change Mitigation, Adaptation Practices, and Business Performance in Brazilian Industrial Companies

This study sought to analyze the level of adopted climate change mitigation and adaptation practices and their relationship with the performance of Brazilian industrial companies. The data were collected through an e-survey in 40 Brazilian industrial companies linked to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and analyzed using univariate and multivariate statistical methods. Mitigation and adaptation practices were adopted as independent variables against climate change, while performance parameters (financial, innovative, production, market, and export performance) were included as the dependent variables. Our findings indicate that Brazilian industrial companies have been adopting both corporate practices of mitigation and adaptation to climate change and show that there are relationships between mitigation and adaptation practices and different dimensions of corporate performance. This study contributes to scientific advancement and developing a theoretical model that addresses, in an integrated manner, managing climate change adaptation and mitigation practices and corporate performance.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between climate change mitigation practices and the performance of Brazilian industrial companies. Theoretical framework: According to Felgenhauer and Webster (2013), mitigation is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Adopting sustainable practices in the context of climate change can influence its position in the market through business reputation and market legitimacy (Brammer & Pavelin, 2006). Method: This study is characterized as exploratory and descriptive with a qualitative and quantitative stage through an e-survey with 39 Brazilian companies in the industrial sector. The independent variables adopted were mitigation practices, and the dependent variables were financial, innovative, production, market, and export performance. Results and conclusion: Existing relationships between mitigation practices and different dimensions of business performance were identified, especially concerning innovation. There is also evidence that actions to control greenhouse gas emissions can lead to financial, image, and productivity gains. Implications of the study: Understanding the mitigation practices adopted by industrial companies contributes to disseminating these practices and can provide a basis for other companies. Moreover, understanding the relevance and benefits of adopting these practices favors mitigating social and environmental impacts on society. Originality/value: Developing a model integrating mitigation practices and business performance can be considered a theoretical contribution, since, in the literature, there are initiatives that treat the themes unilaterally.

Circular Business Model Innovation and Its Relationship With Business Performance in Brazilian Industrial Chemical Companies

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between circular business model innovation and business performance in Brazilian industrial chemical companies. This is a quantitative study carried out through a survey with Brazilian industrial companies. Based on a homogeneity analysis (Homals), the results showed that the high degree of innovation in business models from the adoption of circular economy (CE) strategies in the analyzed companies confirms that a significant change leads to superior performance, especially in market, production, economic and financial, and social.

Lessons learned from quality management system ISO 9001:2015 certification: practices and barrier identification from Brazilian industrial companies

PurposeThis study used a qualitative approach on five case studies in Brazilian industrial companies. The research used interviews, document analysis and on-site visits to collect and analyze data. The companies were selected based on the following criteria: operating in the industrial sector, updating their quality management system (QMS) process to ISO 9001: 2015 and agreeing to participate in this study.Design/methodology/approachThis article aims to investigate the strategies of industrial companies adopted for ISO-9001:2015 certification in light of the six major advances concerning the previous version. Thus, QMS of other organizations can incorporate identified lessons learned, whether certified or not.FindingsThe main finding of the research is the systematization of a set of lessons learned in the experiences of implementing the six significant advances of ISO 9001 concerning the previous version by industrial companies in the State of São Paulo in Brazil. These lessons can and should be used by other organizations to improve their QMSs.Practical implicationsThe practices identified in this empirical research can serve as benchmarking to assist quality managers from other companies in QMS certification based on ISO 9001: 2015 or even those not certified but interested in updating their QMSs. Therefore, lessons learned can significantly minimize efforts to improve your projects, processes, products and services. These findings can also help industrial companies improve their production efficiency and effectiveness through quality improvement.Originality/valueThe main novelty of the research is the consolidation of theoretical and practical analysis of the main changes in the latest version of the ISO 9001 standards. The efforts to fulfill those changes result in lessons learned. The “lessons learned” will form a new block of knowledge that will subsidize theoretical (new research) and practical (formulation of a new ISO 9001 standard and helps quality managers improve their systems).

Technological innovation management: understanding difficulties in an emerging country to enhance manufacturers performance

PurposeThis study aims to discuss the difficulties faced by two large Brazilian industrial companies in technological innovation management.Design/methodology/approachInitially, a literature review is carried out using meta-synthesis technique to consolidate an expanded and detailed framework that complemented and dialoged with the difficulties presented by Oslo Manual. The difficulties presented in this framework were used as an instrument to conduct two case studies.FindingsThere were several findings, especially the adherence to the structured framework and the identification of short-term management and inflexibility of the regulatory environment as relevant difficulties for both companies.Originality/valueThe understanding of these difficulties can contribute to optimizing manufacturers performance in innovation processes. Although only two companies were analyzed, their magnitude and relevance in the sectors they belong to should be highlighted. The information presented here can greatly contribute to expanding the debates about the management of innovation by companies in emerging countries.

Sustainable innovation practices and the degree of innovation of business models in Brazilian industrial companies

PurposeThis study has aimed to analyze the relationship between the adoption of sustainable innovation practices and the degree of innovation of business models in Brazilian industrial companies.Design/methodology/approachThe study has been characterized as quantitative and comprised the conduction of a survey with Brazilian industrial companies.FindingsResults have shown that companies with a high degree of innovation in their business models invest more strongly in strategic dimensions of sustainable innovation, which in general involve stakeholders and cross the organization's internal boundaries, requiring proactive attitudes from the company, probably because this type of investment gives them greater competitiveness in their market and also requires a radical modification of their business model.Practical implicationsThis study seeks to present contributions to entrepreneurs and policy makers, in the face of the innovative and sustainable challenges imposed by society and the guidelines for sustainable development in order to reflect on positive impacts on local and global development.Social implicationsComprehending the behavior of industrial companies in Brazil in relation to sustainable innovation and its impact on society contributes to understanding the benefits of adopting a strategic management of sustainable innovation, minimizing negative socio-environmental impacts.Originality/valueBy analyzing the themes of sustainable innovation and business model, the present study may contribute to adopting business behavior that strategically and systemically integrates the objectives of sustainable innovation.

Effects of learning culture and teamwork context on team performance mediated by dynamic capability

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the relationship between learning culture and teamwork context based on the mediating role played by dynamic capability in manufacturing teams of the industrial sector.Design/methodology/approachIt proposes that dynamic capability is a key element for improving the performance of teams, which, in turn, is positively affected by learning culture and teamwork context. This study is based on data from a survey of 201 companies in the Brazilian industrial sector with manufacturing teams, and followed the partial least squares approach to model the structural equation that was used for data analysis.FindingsThe results indicate that dynamic capability has a strong positive influence on team performance, and also that, despite learning culture and teamwork context having no direct association with performance, they offer contributions mediated by dynamic capability.Research limitations/implicationsThis study includes a reduced sample regarding the population of Brazilian industrial companies, being restricted to only one sector of activity. Future studies may obtain larger samples by working with different sectors in different countries.Practical implicationsThis article alerts managers to the importance of dynamic capability for improving the performance of teams, and points out the role played by learning culture and teamwork context in this relationship.Originality/valueThis research presents new insights into how dynamic capability contributes to the performance of teams, based on antecedent factors (learning culture and teamwork context).

Stakeholders, innovative business models for the circular economy and sustainable performance of firms in an emerging economy facing institutional voids

The literature on the diffusion of the circular economy (CE) rarely provides empirical evidence from emerging economies that face institutional voids and sustainability paradoxes. In contrast, drawing on stakeholder theory, in this paper we test a research framework capable of capturing the imbricated and complex relations among stakeholder pressure, barriers to and motivators of the CE, circular business models, and firms’ sustainable performance. Survey-based primary data was gathered from Brazilian industrial companies which lack regulatory clarity regarding the implementation of a CE. Our research results comprise both expected and unexpected outcomes: (i) differing from other countries, the relevance of regulatory stakeholders in Brazil could not be fully confirmed, adding complexity to the topic; (ii) unexpectedly, in this research, company owners/shareholders were the most salient stakeholders; (iii) stakeholders do indeed exert influence on how firms deal with barriers to and motivators of a CE; (iv) we found that internal barriers and internal motivators were perceived as more intense than external ones, which may create organizational tensions; (v) the adoption of a CE by firms tends to improve their sustainable performance; (vi) the previous possession of ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certifications may control the way companies perceive the benefits of a CE.

Thus, it was possible to confirm the guiding hypotheses of this study.

Cleaner Production practices, motivators and performance in the Brazilian industrial companies

This research develops a relational model between institutional pressures to adopt Cleaner Production and the environmental, economic and operational performance impacts of such practices. Thus, by using a survey with a sample of two hundred and eight (208) Brazilian industrial companies, it was possible to evaluate the principal motivators driving Cleaner Production in these companies, define measures for the levels of adoption of such practices and analyse their contributions to environmental, economic and operational performance. It was concluded that all institutional pressures exert a positive influence on the levels of adoption of such Cleaner Production practices by the companies, with the pressure exerted by the productive chain, of which the companies form a part, particularly standing out, as well as the pressure from internal and external stakeholders. Moreover, it was concluded that the companies’ environmental, economic and operational performance is positively impacted by Cleaner Production practices supported by pressure exerted on the organizations. This study fills a gap in theory by advancing the frontier of knowledge in this field and serving as a reference for environmental public policies that support business guidelines regarding the need for investment in clean technology.

Sustainable innovation practices and their relationship with the performance of industrial companies

Purpose Conditioning factors of the globalized world have created new requirements and opportunities in developing management models for organizations that englobe sustainability aspects, which presume substantial investments in innovation. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the relation between sustainable innovation practices and the performance of industrial companies. Design/methodology/approach This was a quantitative study and carried out by applying a research survey in Brazilian industrial companies. Findings The results showed that there are significantly positive associations between several variables related to sustainable innovation practices and company performance, being, therefore, possible to confirm the original proposed hypothesis. Research limitations/implications The main limiting factors were theoretical choices, comprehension of the phenomenon through the perception of the respondents, and the number of companies in the sample, as little representation was found in the researched population. In this manner, the results cannot be applied to the universe of considered research, being restricted solely to the group of companies in the sample. Practical implications From the main contributions, it is possible to highlight, at a theoretical level, the joint approach to issues of sustainable innovation and performance, since there are few studies covering the impact of adopting innovation practices on company performance. At a practical level, understanding of how the behavior of Brazilian industrial companies contributes to the wide distribution of practices that may contribute to better business performance and generate competitive advantages. Social implications At a social level, understanding of the benefits in adopting sustainable innovations practices favors the minimization of negative socio-environmental impacts. Originality/value By analyzing the themes of sustainable innovation and industrial performance, the present study may contribute to adopting business behavior that strategically and systemically integrates the objectives of sustainable innovation.

FATORES RELACIONADOS COM A MATURIDADE DO SISTEMA DE GESTÃO AMBIENTAL DE EMPRESAS INDUSTRIAIS BRASILEIRAS

RESUMO O objetivo do artigo foi avaliar os fatores que apresentaram relação significante com o nível de maturidade do Sistema de Gestão Ambiental (SGA) de empresas industriais brasileiras, por meio de um modelo de regressão linear múltipla. Considerando as características dos respondentes, chegou-se às variáveis, suas categorias e variáveis dummy decorrentes do estudo. Os resultados, pela ordem dos fatores relacionados que influenciam o nível de maturidade do SGA, foram: a empresa possuir certificação ISO 14001; possuir participação no mercado de carbono; divulgar suas informações em relatórios (disclosure ambiental); possuir projeto para redução do consumo de água; possuir modelo de gestão profissional; possuir seguro relacionado a acidentes ambientais; idade da empresa; atuar no setor têxtil; e a constituição jurídica da empresa Ltda.
