Learning Hadith for children, let alone memorizing and applying it in everyday life, is very important and good for children's brain development. The rapid development of children's brain makes it easier for educators to develop aspects of their development, one of which is religious values, positive habits that children will use in their daily lives. Based on the analysis of the problems received by the author from the community in Wibawamulya Village, with the availability of the number of Qur'anic education parks with adequate infrastructure, it is still necessary to make efforts to increase the literacy of hadith education by implementing a program to improve the quality of human resources in Wibawamulya Village with hadith education using the motion method. Children lack concentration when learning hadith, feel bored and less interested in learning hadith so that memorization of hadith is not well achieved and forget the hadith that has been learned before. This causes the class to be noisy and not conducive when learning hadith takes place. Children prefer to talk to themselves when the educator is guiding their memorization. Based on the existing problems, the author uses qualitative research methods. The purpose of this community service is to understand hadith learning and can be implemented to students. The method of implementing this community service applies community education methods in the form of teaching and training. The results of the service have a positive impact in the form of increasing interest in learning hadith, memorizing hadith, and teacher creativity in learning methods.

The association between maternal immune activation and brain structure and function in human offspring: a systematic review.

Maternal immune activation (MIA) during pregnancy, as a result of infectious or inflammatory stimuli, has gained increasing attention for its potential role in adverse child neurodevelopment, with studies focusing on associations in children born preterm. This systematic review summarizes research on the link between several types of prenatal MIA and subsequent child structural and/or functional brain development outcomes. We identified 111 neuroimaging studies in five MIA areas: inflammatory biomarkers (n = 13), chorioamnionitis (n = 18), other types of infections (n = 18), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (n = 42), and Zika virus (n = 20). Overall, there was large heterogeneity in the type of MIA exposure examined and in study methodology. Most studies had a prospective single cohort design and mainly focused on potential effects on the brain up to one year after birth. The median sample size was 53 participants. Severe infections, i.e., HIV and Zika virus, were associated with various types of cerebral lesions (e.g., microcephaly, atrophy, or periventricular leukomalacia) that were consistently identified across studies. For less severe infections and chronic inflammation, findings were generally inconsistent and mostly included deviations in white matter structure/function. Current findings have been mainly observed in the infants' brain, presenting an opportunity for future studies to investigate whether these associations persist throughout development. Additionally, the inconsistent findings, encompassing both regions of interest and null results, call into question whether prenatal exposure to less severe infections and chronic inflammation exerts a small effect or no effect on child brain development.

Brain structures with stronger genetic associations are not less associated with family- and state-level economic contexts

We investigate whether neural, cognitive, and psychopathology phenotypes that are more strongly related to genetic differences are less strongly associated with family- and state-level economic contexts (N = 5374 individuals with 1KG-EUR-like genotypes with 870 twins, from the Adolescent Behavior and Cognitive Development study). We estimated the twin- and SNP-based heritability of each phenotype, as well as its association with an educational attainment polygenic index (EA PGI). We further examined associations with family socioeconomic status (SES) and tested whether SES-related differences were moderated by state cost of living and social safety net programs (Medicaid expansion and cash assistance). SES was broadly associated with cognition, psychopathology, brain volumes, and cortical surface areas, even after controlling for the EA PGI. Brain phenotypes that were more heritable or more strongly associated with the EA PGI were not, overall, less related to SES, nor were SES-related differences in these phenotypes less moderated by macroeconomic context and policy. Informing a long-running theoretical debate, and contra to widespread lay beliefs, results suggest that aspects of child brain development that are more strongly related to genetic differences are not, in general, less associated with socioeconomic contexts and policies.

Spitzer's book, Digital Dementia, focuses on gaming effects on children and has thus popularized the term. Teenagers are known to use electronic devices regularly, correlating with rising cognitive impairments. The advent of the internet's fifth generation (5G) has transformed technology use, impacting mental health treatments and clinical practices globally. Digital media's influence on the developing brain encompasses motor skills, language, and cognition. Excessive digital media use in young adults correlates with lower cognitive empathy, affecting interpersonal understanding and facial recognition. Studies link heavy reliance on web-based media to decreased white matter integrity, crucial for language skills. Adolescents may be more vulnerable to anxiety and unrealistic expectations due to digital media overuse. Digital media overuse impacts brain development, especially cognitive and inhibitory control, attention, memory, and reasoning, essential for adapting to dynamic environments. Early exposure to fast-paced media can impair motor skills, spatial awareness, problem-solving, and language learning. Neuroimaging studies reveal that environmental factors like screen usage affect brain networks controlling social-emotional behavior and executive functions. Overreliance on smartphones diminishes gray matter in key brain regions, affecting cognitive and emotional regulation. The internet generation, characterized by advancements such as Web 3.0, introduces artificial intelligence and semantic web technologies, reshaping digital content processing. The neurobiological basis of digital dementia involves changes in the brain structure and function, with excessive screen exposure linked to cognitive impairments. Neuroplasticity, or the brain's adaptability, plays a role in cognitive decline from digital media overuse. Early childhood and adolescent brain development stages exhibit significant plasticity, influencing cognitive trajectories. Addressing digital dementia requires strategies to reduce screen time, promote cognitive exercises, and enhance awareness. Parents should regulate children's screen usage, encourage digital detox periods, and substitute screen time with other activities. Cognitive training programs such as Cogmed (Neural Assembly Int AB, Stockholm, SWE) and CogniFit (San Francisco, CA, USA) can improve memory and attention in older adults. Promoting balanced technology use and educating on the risks of excessive digital media consumption is crucial for maintaining cognitive health in the digital age.

This study examines the relationship between gadget use and the potential for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders (GPPH) in preschool children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends gadget use for preschoolers for no more than 1 hour per day. Gadget addiction can affect a child's brain development because excessive production of the hormone dopamine disrupts the maturity of the prefrontal cortex function, namely controlling emotions, self-control, responsibility, decision making and other moral values. Excessive use of gadgets can also cause problems such as ADHD. The intensity of gadget use was measured using a gadget usage habits questionnaire and GPPH using the Abbreviated Conners Rating Scale (ACRS). This study used a cross-sectional design with 27 respondents in PAUD Bougenville, Cawang with a percentage of 100%, and as many as 29.6% had normal results with a total of 8 children and as many as 70.4% had potential ADHD results with a total of 19 people. Based on the Kendall Tau test, the p-value was 0.005 < 0.05. The results of the correlation test between the gadget intensity variable and the potential for GPPH show that between the variables there is a correlation coefficient (R) of 1,000. This can mean that there is a perfect correlation between the two variables with a strong and significant level of relationship because of the sig value. less than 0.05. It is concluded that there is a significant relationship between gadget use and the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in preschool children

Prenatal cannabis exposure is associated with alterations in offspring DNA methylation at genes involved in neurodevelopment, across the life course.

Prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) is of increasing concern globally, due to the potential impact on offspring neurodevelopment, and its association with childhood and adolescent brain development and cognitive function. However, there is currently a lack of research addressing the molecular impact of PCE, that may help to clarify the association between PCE and neurodevelopment. To address this knowledge gap, here we present epigenome-wide association study data across multiple time points, examining the effect of PCE and co-exposure with tobacco using two longitudinal studies, the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and the Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS) at birth (0 y), 7 y and 15-17 y (ALSPAC), and ~27 y (CHDS). Our findings reveal genome-wide significant DNA methylation differences in offspring at 0 y, 7 y, 15-17 y, and 27 y associated with PCE alone, and co-exposure with tobacco. Importantly, we identified significantly differentially methylated CpG sites within the genes LZTS2, NPSR1, NT5E, CRIP2, DOCK8, COQ5, and LRP5 that are shared between different time points throughout development in offspring. Notably, functional pathway analysis showed enrichment for differential DNA methylation in neurodevelopment, neurotransmission, and neuronal structure pathways, and this was consistent across all timepoints in both cohorts. Given the increasing volume of epidemiological evidence that suggests a link between PCE and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in exposed offspring, this work highlights the need for further investigation into PCE, particularly in larger cohorts.

Analysis of the Effect of Zinc Consumption on the Growth and Development of School Age Children

Zinc is an essential mineral for the health of school-age children even though the body requires only a small amount of it. Children are among those at high risk of zinc deficiency. The aim of this study is to find out the impact of zinc consumption on the growth of school-age children. This research method uses a literature review design by searching for some articles that are relevant to the topic taken to obtain information, then analyzed and presented in a narrative form. The results show that parents who lack knowledge about the importance of zinc for health and are less attentive to this, then children may be deficient in zinc intake. As a result, it affects the child's height, weight, and brain development. When children consume zinc on a regular basis, it can support their growth, effectively deal with stunting, prevent adverse effects on their temperament, maintain the immune system, and synergistically lower blood sugar levels in obese children. In conclusion, there is a positive influence that supports the growth of the child if the need for zinc is met from food as well as supplements and a negative influence when the child consumes less zinc.

Sosialisasi Gizi dan Penyuluhan Keluarga Berencana Sebagai Upaya Menurunkan Angka Stunting di Desa Kemiri

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem in young children that has serious implications for physical growth, cognitive development, and individual productivity. This condition is caused by a range of complex factors, including poor maternal nutrition and environmental conditions affecting quality of nutrition. The first 1,000 days of life represent a critical period for stunting prevention, as children's brain growth and development are particularly rapid during this time. Socialization regarding the importance of balanced nutrition and Family Planning programs is a strategic step to support optimal child growth and prevent stunting. This program begins with obtaining permits and coordinating with the Head of Kemiri Village to identify appropriate targets, as well as involving local neighborhood association in surveying facilities and infrastructure. The initiative aims to raise awareness in Kemiri Village about stunting and its prevention, and to educate the importance of balanced nutrition for supporting optimal child growth. Through socialization and counseling, it is hoped that the community will be able to recognize signs of stunting and take appropriate actions. This aligns with the village’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly in achieving the target of a hunger-free village. By reducing the prevalence of stunting, the quality of life for the community can be significantly improved.

Physical Activity On Early Childhood Brain Growth

Physical activity in early childhood has a significant influence on brain growth and development. This study used a descriptive qualitative research method with a literature study to evaluate the impact of physical activity on various aspects of child development, such as motor skills, emotions, and the immune system. The results showed that regular and routine physical activity can improve motor skills, as well as strengthen children's immune system. In addition, physical activities that are tailored to the age and ability of the child and supported by a conducive environment can help maximize the potential of children's brain growth and development. Therefore, education and support from parents, educators, and communities in promoting active lifestyles for children is essential to support children's optimal health and development.

Infant and early childhood physical health assessments in the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study

The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, a multi-site prospective longitudinal cohort study, will examine human brain, cognitive, behavioral, social and emotional development beginning prenatally and planned through early childhood. Many prenatal and early childhood exposures impact both later physical health and development. Moreover, early deficits in physical health, such as growth and vision, are associated with differences in brain development, language and cognitive functioning. For these reasons, the HBCD Study includes measures of early childhood physical health, many of which have clinical relevance, and are applicable for use as both predictors and outcomes. Study measures assess a broad range of physical health domains and include both objective measurement of child growth and health and subjective caregiver report of behaviors and attitudes about constructs known to influence growth and physical development. Lastly, we obtain caregiver report of the child’s routine medical care as well as acute and chronic medical issues. We anticipate that these data will contextualize the impact of child physical growth and health on child brain development and function. In this report we present the rationale for each domain and an overview of the physical health measures included in the current HBCD Study protocol.

Quantitative assessment of preoperative brain development in pediatric congenital heart disease patients by synthetic MRI

ObjectivesThis study investigated the quantitative assessment and application of Synthetic MRI (SyMRI) for preoperative brain development in children with congenital heart disease (CHD).MethodsForty-three CHD patients aged 2–24 months were prospectively included in the observation group, and 43 healthy infants were included in the control group. The SyMRI scans were processed by postprocessing software to obtain T1, T2, and PD maps. The values of T1, T2, and PD in different brain regions were compared with the scores of the five ability areas of the Gesell Development Scale by Pearson correlation analysis.ResultsIn the observation group, the T1 values of the posterior limb of the internal capsule (PLIC), Optic radiation (PTR), cerebral peduncle, centrum semiovale, occipital white matter, temporal white matter, and dentate nucleus were greater than those in the control group. In the observation group, the T2 values of the PLIC, PTR, frontal white matter, occipital white matter, temporal white matter, and dentate nucleus were greater than those in the control group. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the observation group had significantly lower Development Scale scores. In the observation group, the T2 value of the splenium of the corpus callosum was significantly positively correlated with the personal social behavior score. The AUCs for diagnosing preoperative brain developmental abnormalities in children with CHD using T1 values of the temporal white matter and dentate nucleus were both greater than 0.60.ConclusionsQuantitative assessment using SyMRI can aid in the early detection of preoperative brain development abnormalities in children with CHD.Critical relevance statementT1 and T2 relaxation values from SyMRI can be considered as a quantitative imaging marker to detect abnormalities, allowing for early clinical evaluation and timely intervention, thereby reducing neurodevelopmental disorders in these children.Key PointsT1 and T2 relaxation values by SyMRI are related to myelin development.Evaluated development quotient markers were lower in the observation compared to the control group.SyMRI can act as a reference indicator for brain development in CHD children.Graphical

Treatment, Education, and Prognosis of Slow Learners (Borderline Intelligence).

Borderline intelligence has been excluded from formal diagnostic systems and not included in disability diagnoses, leaving gaps in treatment, education, and social welfare despite various functional impairments. Therefore, we aimed to shed light on ways to enhance the intelligence and functioning of individuals with borderline intelligence by reviewing research on its progression, education, and treatment. Ten studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the final literature review and analyzed according to detailed topics (participant characteristics, design, and results). Borderline intelligence is associated with various comorbid conditions, such as anxiety, depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and addictive disorders, which negatively impact its course and prognosis. Individuals with borderline intelligence often face challenges in academics, employment, interpersonal relationships, and health owing to lifelong cognitive impairments. The treatment of borderline intelligence necessitates addressing environmental factors, such as neglect and abuse, as well as treating comorbid mental disorders, which are crucial for prognosis. Tailoring treatment programs for cognitive profile characteristics have been proposed, and studies have reported the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy, working memory training, and intensive rehabilitation training. Therefore, early intervention during childhood brain development is necessary. Risk factors, such as lack of parental education, and their impact on treatment outcomes have also been reported. Extensive research is needed on education, treatment, and prognosis related to borderline intelligence. Active intervention for children with borderline intelligence is essential to improve their functioning and quality of life.

Subcortical Brain Volumes and Neurocognitive Function in Children With Perinatal HIV Exposure: A Population-Based Cohort Study in South Africa.

Children who are HIV-exposed and uninfected (HEU) are at risk for early neurodevelopmental impairment. Smaller basal ganglia nuclei have been reported in neonates who are HEU compared to HIV-unexposed (HU); however, neuroimaging studies outside infancy are scarce. We examined subcortical brain structures and associations with neurocognition in children who are HEU. This neuroimaging study was nested within the Drakenstein Child Health Study birth cohort in South Africa. We compared (T1-weighted) magnetic resonance imaging-derived subcortical brain volumes between children who were HEU (n = 70) and HU (n = 92) at age 2-3 years using linear regression. Brain volumes were correlated with neurodevelopmental outcomes measured with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development III. Compared to HU children, on average children who were HEU had 3% lower subcortical grey matter volumes. Analyses of individual structures found smaller volume of the putamen nucleus in the basal ganglia (-5% difference, P = .016) and the hippocampus (-3% difference, P = .044), which held on adjustment for potential confounders (P < .05). Maternal viremia and lower CD4 count in pregnancy were associated with smaller child putamen volumes. Children who were HEU had lower language scores than HU; putamen and hippocampus volumes were positively correlated with language outcomes. Overall, children who are HEU had a pattern of smaller subcortical volumes in the basal ganglia and hippocampal regions compared to HU children, which correlated with language function. Findings suggest that optimizing maternal perinatal HIV care is important for child brain development. Further studies are needed to investigate underlying mechanisms and long-term outcomes.

THE POTENTIAL OF PATIN FISH (Pangasius hypophthalmus) PROTEIN CONCENTRATE IN ADDRESSING OF STUNTING

Background: Stunting has become a health problem in developing countries such as Indonesia. This can provide an effect on body composition, decreasing albumin levels and immunity status. Patin fish is well-known to have a high level of protein concentration and has a positive-effect on stunting. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the nutrient compound of Patin fish protein concentrate. Methods: The research method used is experimental laboratories. The test was carried out by Association of Official Agricultural Chemists method (AOAC) 2012. Results: The results showed that Patin Fish Protein Concentrate have high protein contain. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather scientific evidence regarding the effects of height protein intake on improving nutritional status, linear growth, and health outcomes in children with stunting. The literature review findings indicate that Patin Fish protein concentrate holds promise as a good protein source in enhancing the nutritional status and growth of stunting children. Additionally, Patin Fish protein concentrate may provide supplementary benefits in increasing intake of omega-3 fatty acids crucial for brain development and cognitive function in children. Conclusion: However, further experimental research is warranted to validate the findings of this literature review and assess the potential of Patin Fish protein concentrate in nutritional intervention programs for effectively addressing stunting.

Fun learning activities about nutritious food as an effort to introduce stunting at SDN Ligarmanah

Stunting has become a particular focus of national health issues. Stunting is when a child is less tall than other children his age, which also affects brain development and metabolic disorders in children. Stunting is caused by a lack of nutritious food intake in children over a long period. This service activity tries to provide stunting education related to healthy food to students at SDN Ligarmanah with fun learning activities. SDN Ligarmanah is one of the schools that has not received sufficient education about stunting, so it is the right target for getting an education. The method used is the compression method, which actively involves students in the learning process, consisting of students from classes 3A, 3B, 4A, and 4B, who were taken using the cluster random sampling technique. This service provides understanding and knowledge to Ligarmanah Elementary School students regarding nutritious food to prevent increased stunting, and the students can display an understanding response to stunting material.

The value of synthetic MRI in detecting the brain changes and hearing impairment of children with sensorineural hearing loss.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) can arise from a diverse range of congenital and acquired factors. Detecting it early is pivotal for nurturing speech, language, and cognitive development in children with SNHL. In our study, we utilized synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (SyMRI) to assess alterations in both gray and white matter within the brains of children affected by SNHL. The study encompassed both children diagnosed with SNHL and a control group of children with normal hearing {1.5-month-olds (n = 52) and 3-month-olds (n = 78)}. Participants were categorized based on their auditory brainstem response (ABR) threshold, delineated into normal, mild, moderate, and severe subgroups.Clinical parameters were included and assessed the correlation with SNHL. Quantitative analysis of brain morphology was conducted using SyMRI scans, yielding data on brain segmentation and relaxation time.Through both univariate and multivariate analyses, independent factors predictive of SNHL were identified. The efficacy of the prediction model was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, with visualization facilitated through the utilization of a nomogram. It's important to note that due to the constraints of our research, we worked with a relatively small sample size. Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NH) and children with inner ear malformation (IEM) were associated with the onset of SNHL both at 1.5 and 3-month groups. At 3-month group, the moderate and severe subgroups exhibited elevated quantitative T1 values in the inferior colliculus (IC), lateral lemniscus (LL), and middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) compared to the normal group. Additionally, WMV, WMF, MYF, and MYV were significantly reduced relative to the normal group. Additionally, SNHL-children with IEM had high T1 values in IC, and LL and reduced WMV, WMF, MYV and MYF values as compared with SNHL-children without IEM at 3-month group. LL-T1 and WMF were independent risk factors associated with SNHL. Consequently, a prediction model was devised based on LL-T1 and WMF. ROC for training set, validation set and external set were 0.865, 0.806, and 0.736, respectively. The integration of T1 quantitative values and brain volume segmentation offers a valuable tool for tracking brain development in children affected by SNHL and assessing the progression of the condition's severity.

NIDA starts new study, at infancy, complementary to ABCD

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has a new study underway, designed to look at how environmental exposures, especially to opioids and other drugs, affect infant and child brain development. The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study recruits pregnant women to study their infants from birth. NIDA is conducting this study as part of the multi‐agency Helping to End Addiction Long‐term (HEAL) Initiative of the National Institutes of Health.

Long-term impact of digital media on brain development in children

Digital media (DM) takes an increasingly large part of children’s time, yet the long-term effect on brain development remains unclear. We investigated how individual effects of DM use (i.e., using social media, playing video games, or watching television/videos) on the development of the cortex (i.e., global cortical surface area), striatum, and cerebellum in children over 4 years, accounting for both socioeconomic status and genetic predisposition. We used a prospective, multicentre, longitudinal cohort of children from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development Study, aged 9.9 years when entering the study, and who were followed for 4 years. Annually, children reported their DM usage through the Youth Screen Time Survey and underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging scans every 2 years. Quadratic-mixed effect modelling was used to investigate the relationship between individual DM usage and brain development. We found that individual DM usage did not alter the development of cortex or striatum volumes. However, high social media usage was associated with a statistically significant change in the developmental trajectory of cerebellum volumes, and the accumulated effect of high-vs-low social media users on cerebellum volumes over 4 years was only β = − 0.03, which was considered insignificant. Nevertheless, the developmental trend for heavy social media users was accelerated at later time points. This calls for further studies and longer follow-ups on the impact of social media on brain development.

Polygenic architecture of brain structure and function, behaviors, and psychopathologies in children.

The human brain undergoes structural and functional changes during childhood, a critical period in cognitive and behavioral development. Understanding the genetic architecture of the brain development in children can offer valuable insights into the development of the brain, cognition, and behaviors. Here, we integrated brain imaging-genetic-phenotype data from over 8,600 preadolescent children of diverse ethnic backgrounds using multivariate statistical techniques. We found a low-to-moderate level of SNP-based heritability in most IDPs, which is lower compared to the adult brain. Using sparse generalized canonical correlation analysis (SGCCA), we identified several covariation patterns among genome-wide polygenic scores (GPSs) of 29 traits, 7 different modalities of brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs), and 266 cognitive and psychological phenotype data. In structural MRI, significant positive associations were observed between total grey matter volume, left ventral diencephalon volume, surface area of right accumbens and the GPSs of cognition-related traits. Conversely, negative associations were found with the GPSs of ADHD, depression and neuroticism. Additionally, we identified a significant positive association between educational attainment GPS and regional brain activation during the N-back task. The BMI GPS showed a positive association with fractional anisotropy (FA) of connectivity between the cerebellum cortex and amygdala in diffusion MRI, while the GPSs for educational attainment and cannabis use were negatively associated with the same IDPs. Our GPS-based prediction models revealed substantial genetic contributions to cognitive variability, while the genetic basis for many mental and behavioral phenotypes remained elusive. This study delivers a comprehensive map of the relationships between genetic profiles, neuroanatomical diversity, and the spectrum of cognitive and behavioral traits in preadolescence.
