(Invited) Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging Studies of Composition Distribution and Strain in Catalytic Alloy Nanoparticles

Compositional distribution, strain, and defects in alloy nanoparticles significantly affect the catalytic properties for a wide range of applications such as gas reforming, fuel cells, electrolysis, etc. while various alloy compositions of nanoparticles have been investigated to improve performance and reduce the amount of precious metals used. It was reported that the composition distribution of the alloy particles, expectedly homogeneous in the whole particle, changed dynamically depending on the operating environment, resulting in altering the catalytic activity [1]. Furthermore, defects such as dislocations, grain boundaries, and elastic strain of the crystalline lattice also significantly affect catalytic properties. Since these factors dynamically change and evolve under operating environments, in situ measurements are essential to reveal these factors and ultimately to exploit them to enhance the catalytic properties. Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) is a lens-less imaging method that measures speckle patterns near Bragg diffraction from a crystalline sample and reconstructs the 3D particle images. Since Bragg diffraction is inherently sensitive to displacements of the crystal lattice, BCDI yields the displacement field within the sample as well as the electron density, i.e., the “shape” of the particle. This displacement field information further allows us to evaluate strain distribution, dislocations, and composition distribution in the particle. BCDI is also advantageous for in situ measurements because the 3D image can be obtained by rotating the sample by only a few degrees, which eases the geometrical constraint of an electrochemical cell for the measurement. This is in contrast to conventional 3D imaging techniques such as X-ray CT, which usually requires 180 degrees of sample rotation.Furthermore, it is expected that the measurement capabilities of BCDI will be rapidly advanced by upgrading synchrotron radiation facilities such as APS-U, which delivers high-flux coherent X-rays. This should expand the applications of BCDI to wider electrochemical materials. In this presentation, we will briefly overview the principle of BCDI followed by specific examples of in situ measurements of catalytic alloy particles [2-4] conducted at 34-ID-C at Advanced Photon Source.[1] F. (Battery Student Slam 8 Award Winner) Multi-Clustered Lithium Diffusion in Single-Crystalline NMC Battery Particles

Understanding the diffusion dynamics of lithium within solid-state electrodes is pivotal for developing high-performance batteries. In this context, layered oxides were utilized as a promising cathode material due to their high energy density and fast intraparticle lithium diffusivity. Despite advancements in material composition, coating, and doping, the understanding of intraparticle lithium diffusion has long been described by Fick's law. Conventionally, lithium diffusion is assumed to generate a monotonic lithium concentration gradient within solid-solution single-crystalline battery materials during cycling. This raises fundamental questions about diffusion in layered oxides; (1) Can the diffusion of Li in solids be interpreted as Fickian diffusion, similar to diffusion in gases or liquids, even though it involves structural and phase evolution throughout the battery cycle? and, (2) Does the fast diffusivity (10-11-10-9 cm2/s) support the homogenization of Li?In this study, we address these questions surrounding lithium diffusion in layered oxide by utilizing operando scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. We revealed the formation of mobile Li-dense/-dilute nano-domains within individual single-crystalline LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (scNMC) during battery cycles. We term this phenomenon ‘multi-clustered lithium diffusion’, distinguishing our findings from the conventionally suggested Fickian diffusion model in solid-solution materials. These domains persist for at least 4 hours during relaxation, accompanied by locally residing strained domains, as confirmed by Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI), within a single particle. We believe these domains arise due to the compensation of localized chemical potential gradients that are generated by the sustained presence of strain within the battery particles during cycling.While maintaining integrity of Li-dense/-dilute domain at various C-rates, STXM result further show that Li-dilute domains maintain during the discharging. Given the lower concentration of Li at insertion boundaries, which could lower the surface charge transfer impedance of the system, Li-dilute domains facilitate lithium transport by functioning as low-resistance pathways. Through a comprehensive analysis of electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), STXM imaging and finite element analysis (FEA), we showed that controlling the local domain fraction is crucial for controlling the overpotential during subsequent charging. Our study introduces new insights into nanoscale solid-state diffusion, thereby enabling the fabrication of high-performance batteries. Figure 1

Atomic resolution coherent x-ray imaging with physics-based phase retrieval

Coherent x-ray imaging and scattering from accelerator based sources such as synchrotrons continue to impact biology, medicine, technology, and materials science. Many synchrotrons around the world are currently undergoing major upgrades to increase their available coherent x-ray flux by approximately two orders of magnitude. The improvement of synchrotrons may enable imaging of materials in operando at the atomic scale which may revolutionize battery and catalysis technologies. Current algorithms used for phase retrieval in coherent x-ray imaging are based on the projection onto sets method. These traditional iterative phase retrieval methods will become more computationally expensive as they push towards atomic resolution and may struggle to converge. Additionally, these methods do not incorporate physical information that may additionally constrain the solution. In this work, we present an algorithm which incorporates molecular dynamics into Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI). This algorithm, which we call PRAMMol (Phase Retrieval with Atomic Modeling and Molecular Dynamics) combines statistical techniques with molecular dynamics to solve the phase retrieval problem. We present several examples where our algorithm is applied to simulated coherent diffraction from 3D crystals and show convergence to the correct solution at the atomic scale.

Capturing Catalyst Strain Dynamics during Operando CO Oxidation.

Understanding the strain dynamic behavior of catalysts is crucial for the development of cost-effective, efficient, stable, and long-lasting catalysts. Using time-resolved Bragg coherent diffraction imaging at the fourth generation Extremely Brilliant Source of the European Synchrotron (ESRF-EBS), we achieved subsecond time resolution during operando chemical reactions. Upon investigation of Pt nanoparticles during CO oxidation, the three-dimensional strain profile highlights significant changes in the surface and subsurface regions, where localized strain is probed along the [111] direction. Notably, a rapid increase in tensile strain was observed at the top and bottom Pt {111} facets during CO adsorption. Moreover, we detected oscillatory strain changes (6.4 s period) linked to CO adsorption during oxidation, where a time resolution of 0.25 s was achieved. This approach allows for the study of adsorption dynamics of catalytic nanomaterials at the single-particle level under operando conditions, which provides insight into nanoscale catalytic mechanisms.

In-situ and wavelength-dependent photocatalytic strain evolution of a single Au nanoparticle on a TiO2 film

Photocatalysis is a promising technique due to its capacity to efficiently harvest solar energy and its potential to address the global energy crisis. However, the structure–activity relationships of photocatalyst during wavelength-dependent photocatalytic reactions remains largely unexplored because it is difficult to measure under operating conditions. Here we show the photocatalytic strain evolution of a single Au nanoparticle (AuNP) supported on a TiO2 film by combining three-dimensional (3D) Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging with an external light source. The wavelength-dependent generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has significant effects on the structural deformation of the AuNP, leading to its strain evolution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to rationalize the induced strain caused by the adsorption of ROS on the AuNP surface. These observations provide insights of how the photocatalytic activity impacts on the structural deformation of AuNP, contributing to the general understanding of the atomic-level catalytic adsorption process.

Patching-based deep-learning model for the inpainting of Bragg coherent diffraction patterns affected by detector gaps.

A deep-learning algorithm is proposed for the inpainting of Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) patterns affected by detector gaps. These regions of missing intensity can compromise the accuracy of reconstruction algorithms, inducing artefacts in the final result. It is thus desirable to restore the intensity in these regions in order to ensure more reliable reconstructions. The key aspect of the method lies in the choice of training the neural network with cropped sections of diffraction data and subsequently patching the predictions generated by the model along the gap, thus completing the full diffraction peak. This approach enables access to a greater amount of experimental data for training and offers the ability to average overlapping sections during patching. As a result, it produces robust and dependable predictions for experimental data arrays of any size. It is shown that the method is able to remove gap-induced artefacts on the reconstructed objects for both simulated and experimental data, which becomes essential in the case of high-resolution BCDI experiments.

Strain Heterogeneity and Extended Defects in Halide Perovskite Devices.

Strain is an important property in halide perovskite semiconductors used for optoelectronic applications because of its ability to influence device efficiency and stability. However, descriptions of strain in these materials are generally limited to bulk averages of bare films, which miss important property-determining heterogeneities that occur on the nanoscale and at interfaces in multilayer device stacks. Here, we present three-dimensional nanoscale strain mapping using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging of individual grains in Cs0.1FA0.9Pb(I0.95Br0.05)3 and Cs0.15FA0.85SnI3 (FA = formamidinium) halide perovskite absorbers buried in full solar cell devices. We discover large local strains and striking intragrain and grain-to-grain strain heterogeneity, identifying distinct islands of tensile and compressive strain inside grains. Additionally, we directly image dislocations with surprising regularity in Cs0.15FA0.85SnI3 grains and find evidence for dislocation-induced antiphase boundary formation. Our results shine a rare light on the nanoscale strains in these materials in their technologically relevant device setting.

Unveiling Core-Shell Structure Formation in a Ni3Fe Nanoparticle with In Situ Multi-Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging.

Solid-state reactions play a key role in materials science. The evolution of the structure of a single 350 nm Ni3Fe nanoparticle, i.e., its morphology (facets) as well as its deformation field, has been followed by applying multireflection Bragg coherent diffraction imaging. Through this approach, we unveiled a demixing process that occurs at high temperatures (600 °C) under an Ar atmosphere. This process leads to the gradual emergence of a highly strained core-shell structure, distinguished by two distinct lattice parameters with a difference of 0.4%. Concurrently, this transformation causes the facets to vanish, ultimately yielding a rounded core-shell nanoparticle. This final structure comprises a Ni3Fe core surrounded by a 40 nm Ni-rich outer shell due to preferential iron oxidation. Providing in situ 3D imaging of the lattice parameters at the nanometer scale while varying the temperature, this study─with the support of atomistic simulations─not only showcases the power of in situ multireflection BCDI but also provides valuable insights into the mechanisms at work during a solid-state reaction characterized by a core-shell transition.

Imaging and ferroelectric orientation mapping of photostriction in a single Bismuth Ferrite nanocrystal

The exploration of multiferroic materials and their interaction with light at the nanoscale presents a captivating frontier in materials science. Bismuth Ferrite (BiFeO3, BFO), a standout among these materials, exhibits room-temperature ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic behaviour and magnetoelectric coupling. Of particular interest is the phenomenon of photostriction, the light-induced deformation of crystal structures, which enhances the prospect for device functionality based on these materials. Understanding and harnessing multiferroic phenomena holds significant promise in various technological applications, from optoelectronics to energy storage. The orientation of the ferroelectric axis is an important design parameter for devices formed from multiferroic materials. Determining its orientation in the laboratory frame of reference usually requires knowing multiple wavevector transfer (Q-Vector) directions, which can be challenging to establish due to the need for extensive reciprocal-space searches. Our study demonstrates a method to identify the ferroelectric axis orientation using Bragg Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging (BCDI) measurements at a single Q-vector direction. This method involves applying photostriction-inducing laser illumination across various laser polarisations. Our findings reveal that photostriction primarily occurs as a surface phenomenon at the nanoscale. Moreover, a photo-induced crystal length change ranging from 30 to 60 nm was observed, consistent with earlier findings on bulk material.

Visualizing the Internal Nanocrystallinity of Calcite Due to Nonclassical Crystallization by 3D Coherent X-Ray Diffraction Imaging.

The internal crystallinity of calcite is investigated for samples synthesized using two approaches: precipitation from solution and the ammonium carbonate diffusion method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses reveal that the calcite products precipitated using both approaches have a well-defined rhombohedron shape, consistent with the euhedral crystal habit of the mineral. The internal structure of these calcite crystals is characterized using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) to determine the 3D electron density and the atomic displacement field. BCDI reconstructions for crystals synthesized using the ammonium carbonate diffusion approach have the expected euhedral shape, with internal strain fields and few internal defects. In contrast, the crystals synthesized by precipitation from solution have very complex external shapes and defective internal structures, presenting null electron density regions and pronounced displacement field distributions. These heterogeneities are interpreted as multiple crystalline domains, created by a nonclassical crystallization mechanism, where smaller nanoparticles coalescence into the final euhedral particles. The combined use of SEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and BCDI allows for structurally differentiating calcite crystals grown with different approaches, opening new opportunities to understand how grain boundaries and internal defects alter calcite reactivity.

In situ coherent x-ray scattering reveals polycrystalline structure and discrete annealing events in strongly coupled nanocrystal superlattices

Solution-phase bottom up self-assembly of nanocrystals into superstructures such as ordered superlattices is an attractive strategy to generate functional materials of increasing complexity, including very recent advances that incorporate strong interparticle electronic coupling. While the self-assembly kinetics in these systems have been elucidated and related to the product characteristics, the weak interparticle bonding interactions suggest the superstructures formed could continue to order within the solution long after the primary nucleation and growth have occurred, even though the mechanism of annealing remains to be elucidated. Here, we use a combination of Bragg coherent diffractive imaging and x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to create real-space maps of supercrystalline order along with a real-time view of the strain fluctuations in aging strongly coupled nanocrystal superlattices while they remain suspended and immobilized in solution. By combining the results, we deduce that the self-assembled superstructures are polycrystalline, initially comprising multiple nucleation sites, and that shear avalanches at grain boundaries continue to increase crystallinity long after growth has substantially slowed. This multimodal approach should be generalizable to characterize a breadth of materials in their native chemical environments, thus extending the reach of high-resolution coherent x-ray characterization to the benefit of a much wider range of physical systems. Three-dimensional domain identification in a single hexagonal manganite nanocrystal

The three-dimensional domain structure of ferroelectric materials significantly influences their properties. The ferroelectric domain structure of improper multiferroics, such as YMnO3, is driven by a non-ferroelectric order parameter, leading to unique hexagonal vortex patterns and topologically protected domain walls. Characterizing the three-dimensional structure of these domains and domain walls has been elusive, however, due to a lack of suitable imaging techniques. Here, we present a multi-peak Bragg coherent x-ray diffraction imaging determination of the domain structure in single YMnO3 nanocrystals. We resolve two ferroelectric domains separated by a domain wall and confirm that the primary atomic displacements occur along the crystallographic c-axis. Correlation with atomistic simulations confirms the Mexican hat symmetry model of domain formation, identifying two domains with opposite ferroelectric polarization and adjacent trimerization, manifesting in a clockwise arrangement around the hat’s brim.

Coherent diffractive imaging with twisted X-rays: Principles, applications, and outlook

Recent technological breakthroughs in synchrotron and x-ray free electron laser facilities have revolutionized nanoscale structural and dynamic analyses in condensed matter systems. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in coherent scattering and diffractive imaging techniques, which are now at the forefront of exploring materials science complexities. These techniques, notably Bragg coherent diffractive imaging and x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic dichroism, and x-ray correlation analysis leverage beam coherence to achieve volumetric three-dimensional imaging at unprecedented sub-nanometer resolutions and explore dynamic phenomena within sub-millisecond timeframes. Such capabilities are critical in understanding and developing advanced materials and technologies. Simultaneously, the emergence of chiral crystals—characterized by their unique absence of standard inversion, mirror, or other roto-inversion symmetries—presents both challenges and opportunities. These materials exhibit distinctive interactions with light, leading to phenomena such as molecular optical activity, chiral photonic waveguides, and valley-specific light emissions, which are pivotal in the burgeoning fields of photonic and spintronic devices. This review elucidates how novel x-ray probes can be leveraged to unravel these properties and their implications for future technological applications. A significant focus of this review is the exploration of new avenues in research, particularly the shift from conventional methods to more innovative approaches in studying these chiral materials. Inspired by structured optical beams, the potential of coherent scattering techniques utilizing twisted x-ray beams is examined. This promising direction not only offers higher spatial resolution but also opens the door to previously unattainable insights in materials science. By contextualizing these advancements within the broader scientific landscape and highlighting their practical applications, this review aims to chart a course for future research in this rapidly evolving field.

Enhanced Piezoelectric Response at Nanoscale Vortex Structures in Ferroelectrics.

The piezoelectric response is a measure of the sensitivity of a material's polarization to stress or its strain to an applied field. Using in operando X-ray Bragg coherent diffraction imaging, we observe that topological vortices are the source of a 5-fold enhancement of the piezoelectric response near the vortex core. The vortices form where several low-symmetry ferroelectric phases and phase boundaries coalesce. Unlike bulk ferroelectric solid solutions in which a large piezoelectric response is associated with coexisting phases in the proximity of the triple point, the largest responses for pure BaTiO3 at the nanoscale are in spatial regions of extremely small spontaneous polarization at vortex cores. The response decays inversely with polarization away from the vortex, analogous to the behavior in bulk ceramics as the cation compositions are varied away from the triple point. We use first-principles-based molecular dynamics to augment our observations, and our results suggest that nanoscale piezoelectric materials with a large piezoelectric response can be designed within a parameter space governed by vortex cores. Our findings have implications for the development of next-generation nanoscale piezoelectric materials.

Ultrafast Bragg coherent diffraction imaging of epitaxial thin films using deep complex-valued neural networks

Domain wall structures form spontaneously due to epitaxial misfit during thin film growth. Imaging the dynamics of domains and domain walls at ultrafast timescales can provide fundamental clues to features that impact electrical transport in electronic devices. Recently, deep learning based methods showed promising phase retrieval (PR) performance, allowing intensity-only measurements to be transformed into snapshot real space images. While the Fourier imaging model involves complex-valued quantities, most existing deep learning based methods solve the PR problem with real-valued based models, where the connection between amplitude and phase is ignored. To this end, we involve complex numbers operation in the neural network to preserve the amplitude and phase connection. Therefore, we employ the complex-valued neural network for solving the PR problem and evaluate it on Bragg coherent diffraction data streams collected from an epitaxial La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) thin film using an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). Our proposed complex-valued neural network based approach outperforms the traditional real-valued neural network methods in both supervised and unsupervised learning manner. Phase domains are also observed from the LSCO thin film at an ultrafast timescale using the complex-valued neural network.

Manipulating metastability: Quenched control of topological defects in multiferroics

The topological properties of quasiparticles, such as skyrmions and vortices, have the potential to offer extraordinary metastability through topological protection, and drive motion with minimal electrical current excitation. This has promising implications for future applications in spintronics. Skyrmions frequently appear either in lattice form or as separate, isolated quasiparticles [Y. Tokura and N. Kanazawa, Chemical Reviews 121, 2857–2897 (2021)]. Magnetic ferroelectrics, a subset of multiferroics that exhibit magnetically induced ferroelectricity, possess intriguing characteristics like magnetic (electric) field-controlled ferroelectric (magnetic) responses. Previous research based on Landau theory indicated the potential to stabilize metastable phases in multiferroic barium hexaferrite [Karpov et al., Phys. Rev. B 100, 054432 (2019)]. We have successfully stabilized these meta-stable phases through magnetic quenching of hexaferrite nanoparticles, leading to the creation of compelling topological structures. The structural changes in individual BaFe12O19 nanocrystals were scrutinized using Bragg coherent diffractive imaging, granting us insight into the emergent topological structures in field-quenched multiferroics. Additionally, we explored why these structures are energetically preferable for the formation of metastable topological structures [Karpov et al., Nature Communications 8, 280 (2017) and Karpov et al., Phys. Rev. B 100, 054432 (2019)].

Unraveling the synergistic effects of Cu-Ag tandem catalysts during electrochemical CO2 reduction using nanofocused X-ray probes

Controlling the selectivity of the electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide into value-added chemicals continues to be a major challenge. Bulk and surface lattice strain in nanostructured electrocatalysts affect catalytic activity and selectivity. Here, we unravel the complex dynamics of synergistic lattice strain and stability effects of Cu-Ag tandem catalysts through a previously unexplored combination of in situ nanofocused X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Bragg coherent diffraction imaging. Three-dimensional strain maps reveal the lattice dynamics inside individual nanoparticles as a function of applied potential and product yields. Dynamic relations between strain, redox state, catalytic activity and selectivity are derived. Moderate Ag contents effectively reduce the competing evolution of H2 and, concomitantly, lead to an enhanced corrosion stability. Findings from this study evidence the power of advanced nanofocused spectroscopy techniques to provide new insights into the chemistry and structure of nanostructured catalysts.

Imaging Light-Induced Migration of Dislocations in Halide Perovskites with 3D Nanoscale Strain Mapping.

In recent years, halide perovskite materials have been used to make high-performance solar cells and light-emitting devices. However, material defects still limit device performance and stability. Here, synchrotron-based Bragg coherent diffraction imaging is used to visualize nanoscale strain fields, such as those local to defects, in halide perovskite microcrystals. Significant strain heterogeneity within MAPbBr3 (MA = CH3 NH3 + ) crystals is foundin spite of their high optoelectronic quality, and both 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 edge dislocations are identified through analysis of their local strain fields. By imaging these defects and strain fields in situ under continuous illumination, dramatic light-induced dislocation migration across hundreds of nanometers is uncovered. Further, by selectively studying crystals that are damaged by the X-ray beam, large dislocation densities and increased nanoscale strains are correlated with material degradation and substantially altered optoelectronic properties assessed using photoluminescence microscopy measurements. These results demonstrate the dynamic nature of extended defects and strain in halide perovskites, which will have important consequences for device performance and operational stability.

Lattice strain visualization inside a 400 nm single grain of BaTiO3 in polycrystalline ceramics by Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging

The degree of anisotropy and the domain arrangement of crystal structures in ferroelectrics are affected by the grain boundaries and by the shape and size of the grains. To understand the grain boundary effects that occur in ferroelectric ceramics, we introduce a technique for nondestructively observing the internal lattice strain distribution of a submicrometer-sized ferroelectric grain in polycrystalline materials. The ferroelectric phase transition of a single grain in the polycrystalline materials was evaluated by tracking the changes in the Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction (CXD) patterns. The internal lattice strain distribution of the grains in the paraelectric phase was visualized via Bragg CXD imaging. A pair of 90° domains in the ferroelectric phase were also imaged in three dimensions, and showed a domain boundary correlated with the internal lattice strain caused by the stresses from the adjacent grains.
