The Ven. Charles Theophilus Hahn, a hitherto unknown Edwardian botanical illustrator in Natal, 1908—1916

A brief biographical sketch is given of the Rev. C.T. Hahn, an English-born, Oxford-educated Anglican missionary in Zululand who painted some 235 watercolours of Natal flora between 1908 and 1913. Hahn (who later changed his name to Headley) was one of the most productive of the early botanical illustrators in Natal but as a collection of his paintings has only recently been discovered, his work has until hitherto remained unknown.

A Treasury of Flowers: Rare Illustrations from the Collection of the New York Botanical Garden

A collection of botanical illustrations focusing on examples from the 18th and 19th centuries and including work from artists such as Ehret and Redoute. Each of the 80 plates is accompanied by a descriptive text. The author has also written Redoute's Roses and Cultivated Flowers.

Isaac Sprague, "Delineator and naturalist."

In naming the genus Spraguea, John Torrey, America's major botanist of the first half of the nineteenth century, wrote in 1853: "I have dedicated this genus to Mr. Isaac Sprague, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, so well known as a draughtsman and especially for the admirable illustrations of the Genera of Plants of the United States...." l Sprague (Fig. 1), the major botanical illustrator in this country at that time, had few competitors. He considered himself a "naturalist" and "delineator,"2 rather than a botanical artist. By providing accurate and artistically pleasing drawings for some of their books and papers, mostly between 1845 and 1865, he helped both John Torrey and Asa Gray to become accepted as worldclass botanists, on a par with those botanists of Britain and the Continent who were then publishing finely illustrated works. Thus, Sprague's work was most important to American botany at a critical point in its development. In the early nineteenth century in the United States, there was little original illustration of scientific works. To understand the rise of the new American tradition of original scientific illustration, it is particularly important to consider its leading early exemplar, Isaac Sprague, and to relate his story to that of the development of botany as a profession, as exemplified in the life of Sprague's major employer, Asa Gray. Orchids from Curtis' Botanical Magazine.

Curtis' Botanical Magazine is probably the finest and most important source of illustrations of orchids and early copies of this publication are now collectors' items with considerable rarity value. This beautiful volume makes available for the first time portraits and scientific details of more than 1200 orchid species, many first described in Curtis' Magazine. The scientific value of this facsimile reprint has been considerably increased by the provision of an updated botanical nomenclature including synonyms and bibliography. The illustrations are of a very high standard and represent the work of leading botanical artists including Walter Hood Fitch, Lilian Snelling and Mary Grierson. These colour plates (a total of 408) form the bulk of the book and have been printed to the very highest standard, and matched against the Basel edition of the Magazine itself.

A CONSERVATION PROGRAMME FOR THE SYDNEY PARKINSON BOTANICAL STUDIES PRODUCED ON THE FIRST CAPTAIN COOK "ENDEAVOUR VOYAGE!!

The author has been commissioned by the British Museum (Natural History) Libraries to undertake a conservation programme for the Sydney Parkinson botanical drawings and water-colours - one of the world's scientific, historic and artistic treasurers. Two hundred years after they were produced the drawings are still consulted by botanists, researchers and scholars because of their remarkable accuracy in line and colour. The drawings therefore have a dual role as scientific working drawings and works of art. Since Sir Joseph Banks made the drawings available for study virtually from the day he returned to England in July 1771, continual usage, the passage of time and the natural ageing process have all taken their toll and led to this major conservation programme. The collection1s present condition is outlined and the approach to conservation treatment particularly in terms of the ethics, materiaLs and methods used is presented.
