The Entropy and Energy for Non-Mechanical Work at the Bose-Einstein Transition of a Harmonically Trapped Gas Using an Empirical Global-Variable Method.

Quantum thermal engines have received much attention in recent years due to their potential applications. For a candidate group, harmonically trapped gases under Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), we see little investigation on the energy transference around that transition. Therefore, we present an empirical study with rubidium-87 gas samples in a magnetic harmonic trap. We developed an empirical equation of state model to fit to our experimental dataset, expressing the pressure parameter in terms of temperature, and six technical coefficients, functions of the volume parameter and the number of atoms. By using standard thermodynamic relations, we determine the system's entropy, shown to be constant at the BEC transition, as expected. Being isentropic makes the BEC transition an energy source for non-mechanical work. Hence, we observed that the enthalpy at the BEC transition, at fixed values of the volume parameter, grows fairly linearly with the number of atoms. We fitted a linear function to that data, finding the specific enthalpy of the BEC transformation and the intrinsic enthalpic loss for BEC. We deem this study to be a step closer to practical quantum-based engines.

Critical exponents and fluctuations at BEC in a 2D harmonically trapped ideal gas

The critical properties displayed by an ideal 2D Bose gas trapped in a harmonic potential are determined and characterized in an exact numerical fashion. Beyond thermodynamics, addressed in terms of the global pressure and volume which are the appropriate variables of a fluid confined in a non-uniform harmonic potential, the density-density correlation function is also calculated and the corresponding correlation length is found. Evaluation of all these quantities as Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) is approached manifest its critical continuous phase transition character. The divergence of the correlation length as the critical temperature is reached, unveils the expected spatial scale invariance proper of a critical transition. The logarithmic singularities of this transition are traced back to the non-analytic behavior of the thermodynamic variables at vanishing chemical potential, which is the onset of BEC. The critical exponents associated with the ideal BEC transition in the 2D inhomogeneous fluid reveals its own universality class.

Non-Hermitian topological Fermi superfluid near the p -wave unitary limit

We discuss theoretically the non-Hermitian superfluid phase transition in one-dimensional two-component Fermi gases near the $p$-wave Feshbach resonance accompanied by the two-body loss associated with dipolar relaxation. We point out that this system gives us an opportunity to explore the interplay among various nontrivial properties such as universal thermodynamics at divergent $p$-wave scattering lengths, the topological phase transition at vanishing chemical potential, and the non-Hermitian Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) transition, in a unified manner. In the BCS phase, the loss-induced superfluid-normal transition occurs when the exceptional point appears in the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In the BEC phase, the diffusive gapless mode can be regarded as a precursor of the instability of the superfluid state. Moreover, we show that the superfluid state is fragile against the two-body loss near the topological phase transition point.

Hugenholtz–Pines relations and the critical temperature of a Rabi coupled binary Bose system

Using a theoretical field Gaussian approximation we have studied Rabi coupled binary Bose system at low temperatures. We have derived extended Hugenholtz - Pines relations taking into account one body interaction (e.g. Rabi coupling) and studied the critical temperature $T_c$ of Bose-Einstein condensate transition. We have shown that, the shift of $T_c$ due to this interaction can not exceed $\sim 60 \%$ and goes to a plateau with increasing the parameter $\Omega_R/T_{c}^{0}$, where $\Omega_R$ is the intensity of the coupling and $T_{c}^{0}$ is the critical temperature of the system with $\Omega_R=0$. Moreover, the shift is always positive and does not depend on the sign of the one body interaction.

Signatures of the exciton gas phase and its condensation in monolayer 1T-ZrTe2

The excitonic insulator (EI) is a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of excitons bound by electron-hole interaction in a solid, which could support high-temperature BEC transition. The material realization of EI has been challenged by the difficulty of distinguishing it from a conventional charge density wave (CDW) state. In the BEC limit, the preformed exciton gas phase is a hallmark to distinguish EI from conventional CDW, yet direct experimental evidence has been lacking. Here we report a distinct correlated phase beyond the 2×2 CDW ground state emerging in monolayer 1T-ZrTe2 and its investigation by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The results show novel band- and energy-dependent folding behavior in a two-step process, which is the signatures of an exciton gas phase prior to its condensation into the final CDW state. Our findings provide a versatile two-dimensional platform that allows tuning of the excitonic effect.

Tuning moiré excitons in Janus heterobilayers for high-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation.

Using first-principles calculations, we predict that moiré excitons in twisted Janus heterobilayers could realize tunable and high-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). The electric dipole in the Janus heterobilayers leads to charge-transfer interlayer and intralayer moiré excitons with exceptionally long lifetimes, in the absence of spacer layers. The electric dipole is also expected to enhance exciton-exciton repulsions at high exciton densities and can modulate moiré potentials that trap excitons for their condensation. The key parameters for exciton condensation, including exciton Bohr radius, binding energy, effective mass, and critical Mott density, are examined as a function of the twist angle. Last, exciton phase diagrams for the Janus heterobilayers are constructed from which one can estimate the BEC (>100 K) and superfluid (~30 K) transition temperatures. In addition to indirect interlayer excitons, we find that direct intralayer excitons can also condense at high temperatures, consistent with experiments.

A Pair of 2D Quantum Liquids: Investigating the Phase Behavior of Indirect Excitons.

Long-lived indirect excitons (IXs) exhibit a rich phase diagram, including a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), a Wigner crystal, and other exotic phases. Recent experiments have hinted at a “classical” liquid of IXs above the BEC transition. To uncover the nature of this phase, we use a broad range of theoretical tools and find no evidence of a driving force toward classical condensation. Instead, we attribute the condensed phase to a quantum electron–hole liquid (EHL), first proposed by Keldysh for direct excitons. Taking into account the association of free carriers into bound excitons, we study the phase equilibrium between a gas of excitons, a gas of free carriers, and an EHL for a wide range of electron–hole separations, temperatures, densities, and mass ratios. Our results agree reasonably well with recent measurements of GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells.

Thermodynamic Correlation of the Entropy of Bose–Einstein Condensation Transition to the Lambda Points of Superfluids

Abstract In this work, the authors show an apparent connection in the behaviors of superfluid Helium in its two stable isotopes, where the lambda transition to superfluidity is seen to correspond to a theoretical Bose–Einstein condensation temperature of the ideal parts of the two isotopes. A statistical model for the physical and thermodynamic behaviors is developed based on their known properties, where the equations of the partition function, entropy, and specific heat are constructed in such a way where one term applies to the ideal part of the fluid and the second to its interacting part. The calculated temperatures for the formation of a theoretical Bose–Einstein condensation in the ideal parts of both isotopes almost completely matches their lambda transition temperatures. The models of the two isotopes are very different due to the fermionic nature of Helium-3, for which the model is formed based on the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) theory of Cooper pairs of fermions. Using this formulation, the Bose–Einstein condensation temperature for the pairs of Helium-3 atoms is calculated, as opposed to the condensation temperature for Helium-4, which is directly derived from the bosonic atoms, leading to its much lower value than Helium-4.

Boosting engine performance with Bose–Einstein condensation

At low-temperatures a gas of bosons will undergo a phase transition into a quantum state of matter known as a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC), in which a large fraction of the particles will occupy the ground state simultaneously. Here we explore the performance of an endoreversible Otto cycle operating with a harmonically confined Bose gas as the working medium. We analyze the engine operation in three regimes, with the working medium in the BEC phase, in the gas phase, and driven across the BEC transition during each cycle. We find that the unique properties of the BEC phase allow for enhanced engine performance, including increased power output and higher efficiency at maximum power.

Towards high-temperature electron-hole condensate phases in monolayer tetrels metal halides: Ultra-long excitonic lifetimes, phase diagram and exciton dynamics

Excitons as composite bosons have been predicted to condense into Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC), Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) superfluid or electron-hole liquid (EHL) states. However, short lifetime and small binding energy are the main obstacles that hinder the formation and observation of excitonic condensate at high temperature. Here we demonstrate excellent two-dimensional Tetrel Metal Halides (TMHs) platforms for excitonic quantum phase transition researches. We find that excitons in those monolayers possess effective masses similar to the free electron, promising large thermal de Broglie wavelengths. They can maintain stable bosonic characteristic at high temperature and concentration up to 1012 cm−2. The calculation on PbI2, PbBr2, PbCl2, SnI2, SnBr2, SnCl2 indicates BEC transition temperatures at 49 K, 103 K, 252 K, 36 K, 78 K, 152 K, comparable to the experimentally observed exciton BEC in MoSe2–WSe2 bilayer and 1 T-TiSe2 at 100 K and 190 K respectively. Besides, we confirm that the thermal equilibrium of excitonic subsystem can be established really fast, up to ∼10–100 fs. The excitons can live for ∼1–100 μs without direct radiation, beneficial for the formation and observation of condensate state. Our result paves the way not only for studies of quantum phase transition researches, but also for high-temperature excitonic devices.

Thermodynamic stability, compressibility matrices, and effects of mediated interactions in a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture

We theoretically investigate the thermodynamic stability of a normal-state Bose-Fermi mixture, with a tunable Bose-Fermi pairing interaction $-U_{\rm BF}<0$ associated with a hetero-nuclear Feshbach resonance, as well as a weak repulsive Bose-Bose interaction $U_{\rm BB}\ge 0$. Including strong hetero-pairing fluctuations associated with the former interaction within the self-consistent $T$-matrix approximation, as well as the latter within the mean-field level, we calculate the compressibility matrix, to assess the stability of this system against density fluctuations. In the weak- and the intermediate-coupling regime with respect $-U_{\rm BF}$, we show that an effective attractive interaction between bosons mediated by density fluctuations in the Fermi component makes the system unstable below a certain temperature $T_{\rm clp}$ (leading to density collapse). When $U_{\rm BB}=0$, $T_{\rm clp}$ is always higher than the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) temperature $T_{\rm c}$. When $U_{\rm BB}>0$, the density collapse is suppressed, and the BEC transition becomes possible. It is also suppressed by the formation of tightly bound Bose-Fermi molecules when the hetero-pairing interaction $-U_{\rm BF}$ is strong; however, since the system may be viewed as a molecular Fermi gas in this case, the BEC transition does not also occur. Since quantum gases involving Bose atoms are known to be sensitive to inter-particle correlations, our results would be useful for the study of many-body properties of a Bose-Fermi mixture in a stable manner, without facing the unwanted density collapse.

Roton Excitations in an Oblate Dipolar Quantum Gas.

We observe signatures of radial and angular roton excitations around a droplet crystallization transition in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. In situ measurements are used to characterize the density fluctuations near this transition. The static structure factor is extracted and used to identify the radial and angular roton excitations by their characteristic symmetries. These fluctuations peak as a function of the interaction strength indicating the crystallization transition of the system. We compare our observations to a theoretically calculated excitation spectrum allowing us to connect the crystallization mechanism with the softening of the angular roton modes.

Condensation in the phase space and network topology during transition from chaos to order in turbulent thermoacoustic systems

The emergence of oscillatory dynamics (order) from chaotic fluctuations is a well-known phenomenon in turbulent thermoacoustic, aero-acoustic, and aeroelastic systems and is often detrimental to the system. We study the dynamics of two distinct turbulent thermoacoustic systems, bluff-body and swirl-stabilized combustors, where the transition occurs from the state of combustion noise (chaos) to thermoacoustic instability (order) via the route of intermittency. Using unweighted complex networks built from phase space cycles of the acoustic pressure oscillations, we characterize the topology of the phase space during various dynamical states in these combustors. We propose the use of network centrality measures derived from cycle networks as a novel means to characterize the number and stability of periodic orbits in the phase space and to study the topological transformations in the phase space during the emergence of order from chaos in the combustors. During the state of combustion noise, we show that the phase space consists of several unstable periodic orbits, which influence the phase space trajectory. As order emerges in the system dynamics, the number of periodic orbits decreases and their stability increases. At the onset of oscillatory dynamics, the phase space consists of a stable periodic orbit. We also use network centrality measures to identify the onset of thermoacoustic instability in both the combustors. Finally, we propose that the onset of oscillatory instabilities in turbulent systems is analogous to Bose-Einstein condensation transition observed for bosons, if we define phase space cycles as particles and the periodic orbits as energy levels.

Two- and three-body effective potentials between impurities in ideal BEC

We exactly calculate the full temperature dependence of Casimir-like forces appearing between two and three static impurities loaded in the ideal Bose gas below the Bose–Einstein condensation transition point. Assuming the short-ranged character of the boson-impurity interaction, the calculation procedure presented here can be easily extended on a Bose system with an arbitrary number of impurities immersed.

Magnon Bose–Einstein condensation and superconductivity in a frustrated Kondo lattice

Motivated by recent experiments on magnetically frustrated heavy fermion metals, we theoretically study the phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model with a nonmagnetic valence bond solid ground state on a ladder. A similar physical setting may be naturally occurring in [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] compounds. In the insulating limit, the application of a magnetic field drives a quantum phase transition to an easy-plane antiferromagnet, which is described by a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Using a combination of field theoretical techniques and density matrix renormalization group calculations we demonstrate that in one dimension this transition is stable in the presence of a metallic Fermi sea, and its universality class in the local magnetic response is unaffected by the itinerant gapless fermions. Moreover, we find that fluctuations about the valence bond solid ground state can mediate an attractive interaction that drives unconventional superconducting correlations. We discuss the extensions of our findings to higher dimensions and argue that depending on the filling of conduction electrons, the magnon Bose-Einstein condensation transition can remain stable in a metal also in dimensions two and three.

Chiral symmetry breaking and monopoles in gauge theories

QCD monopoles are magnetically charged quasiparticles whose Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at $T<T_c$ creates electric confinement and flux tubes. The "magnetic scenario" of QCD proposes that scattering on the non-condensed component of the monopole ensemble at $T>T_c$ plays an important role in explaining the properties of strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) near the deconfinement temperature. In this paper, we study the phenomenon of chiral symmetry breaking and its relation to magnetic monopoles. Specifically, we study the eigenvalue spectrum of the Dirac operator in the basis of fermionic zero modes in an SU(2) monopole background. We find that as the temperature approaches the deconfinement temperature $T_c$ from above, the eigenvalue spectrum has a finite density at $\omega = 0$, indicating the presence of a chiral condensate. In addition, we find the critical scaling of the eigenvalue gap to be consistent with that of the correlation length in the 3d Ising model and the BEC transition of monopoles on the lattice.

Real-space visualization of quantum phase transitions by network topology.

We demonstrate that with appropriate quantum correlation function, a real-space network model can be constructed to study the phase transitions in quantum systems. For a three-dimensional bosonic system, a single-particle density matrix is adopted to construct an adjacency matrix. We show that a Bose-Einstein condensate transition can be interpreted as a transition into a small-world network, which is accurately captured by a small-world coefficient. For a one-dimensional disordered system, using the electron diffusion operator to build the adjacency matrix, we find that Anderson localized states create many weakly linked subgraphs, which significantly reduces the clustering coefficient and lengthens the shortest path. We show that the crossover from delocalized to localized regimes as a function of the disorder strength can be identified as a loss of global connection, which is revealed by the small-world coefficient as well as other independent measures such as robustness, efficiency, and algebraic connectivity. Our results suggest that quantum phase transitions can be visualized in real space and characterized by network analysis with suitable choices of quantum correlation functions.

Hamiltonian short-time critical dynamics of the three-dimensional XY model.

The short-time relaxation critical behavior of the XY model on a simple-cubic lattice is investigated within the scope of deterministic Hamiltonian dynamics. The Hamiltonian includes a first-neighbor interaction between planar vectors and a rotational kinetic term from which the motion equations are derived. The dynamical evolution from a fully ordered initial state is followed by employing a symplectic algorithm based on a high-order Trotter-Suzuki decomposition of the time-evolution operator. A finite-time scaling analysis is performed to provide accurate estimates of the critical energy density, the order-parameter relaxation exponent, and the dynamical critical exponent. The estimated critical exponents are consistent with prior theoretical and experimental values reported for the superfluid ^{4}He, extreme type-II superconducting, and Bose-Einstein condensation transitions.

Exploring the thermodynamics of spin-1 Bose gases with synthetic magnetization

We study the thermodynamic properties of a spin-1 Bose gas across the Bose–Einstein condensation transition. We present the theoretical description of the thermodynamics of a trapped ideal spin-1 Bose gas and we describe the phases that can be obtained in this system as a function of the temperature and of the populations in the different spin components. We propose a simple way to realize a ‘synthetic magnetization’ that can be used to probe the entire phase diagram while keeping the real magnetization of the system fixed. We experimentally demonstrate the use of such method to explore different phases in a sample with zero total magnetization. Our work opens up new perspectives to study isothermal quenching dynamics through different magnetic phases in spinor condensates.
