Dark State Concentration Dependent Emission and Dynamics of CdSe Nanoplatelet Exciton-Polaritons.

The recent surge of interest in polaritons has prompted fundamental questions about the role of dark states in strong light-matter coupling phenomena. Here, we systematically vary the relative number of dark states by controlling the number of stacked CdSe nanoplatelets confined in a Fabry-Pérot cavity. We find the emission spectrum to change significantly with an increasing number of nanoplatelets, with a gradual shift of the dominant emission intensity from the lower polariton branch to a manifold of dark states. Through accompanying calculations based on a kinetic model, this shift is rationalized by an entropic trapping of excitations by the dark state manifold, while a weak dark state dispersion due to local disorder explains their nonzero emission. Our results point toward the relevance of the dark state concentration to the optical and dynamical properties of cavity-embedded quantum emitters with ramifications for Bose-Einstein condensate formation, polariton lasing, polariton-based quantum transduction schemes, and polariton chemistry.

Positronium density measurements using polaritonic effects

Recent experimental advances in Positronium (Ps) physics have made it possible to produce dense Ps ensembles in which Ps-Ps interactions may occur, leading to the production of Ps$_2$ molecules and paving the way to the realization of a Ps Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). In order to achieve this latter goal it would be advantageous to develop new methods to measure Ps densities in real-time. Here we describe a possible approach to do this using polaritonic methods: using realistic experimental parameters we demonstrate that a dense Ps gas can be strongly coupled to the photonic field of a distributed Bragg reflector microcavity. In this strongly coupled regime, the optical spectrum of the system is composed of two hybrid positronium-polariton resonances separated by the vacuum Rabi splitting, which is proportional to the square root of the Ps density. Given that polaritons can be created on a sub-cycle timescale, a spectroscopic measurement of the vacuum Rabi splitting could be used as an ultra-fast Ps density measurement in regimes relevant to Ps BEC formation. Moreover, we show how positronium-polaritons could potentially enter the ultrastrong light-matter coupling regime, introducing a radically novel platform to explore its non-perturbative phenomenology.

Nonlinear diffusion of fermions and bosons

A nonlinear diffusion equation is proposed to account for thermalization in fermionic and bosonic systems through analytical solutions. For constant transport coefficients, exact time-dependent solutions are derived through nonlinear transformations, and the corresponding local equilibration times are deduced. Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions emerge as stationary solutions of the nonlinear equation. As examples, local thermalization of quarks and gluons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and of ultracold atoms including time-dependent Bose-Einstein condensate formation are discussed.

Analytical framework for non-equilibrium phase transition to Bose–Einstein condensate

The theoretical description of non-equilibrium Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) is one of the main challenges in modern statistical physics and kinetics. The non-equilibrium nature of BEC makes it impossible to employ the well-established formalism of statistical mechanics. We develop a framework for the analytical description of a non-equilibrium phase transition to BEC that, in contrast to previously developed approaches, takes into account the infinite number of continuously distributed states. We consider the limit of fast thermalization and obtain an analytical expression for the full density matrix of a non-equilibrium ideal BEC which also covers the equilibrium case. For the particular cases of 2D and 3D, we investigate the non-equilibrium formation of BEC by finding the temperature dependence of the ground state occupation and second-order coherence function. We show that for a given pumping rate, the macroscopic occupation of the ground state and buildup of coherence may occur at different temperatures. Moreover, the buildup of coherence strongly depends on the pumping scheme. We also investigate the condensate linewidth and show that the Schawlow–Townes law holds for BEC in 3D and does not hold for BEC in 2D.

Nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation

We investigate formation of Bose-Einstein condensates under non-equilibrium conditions using numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. For this, we set initial random weakly nonlinear excitations and the forcing at high wave numbers, and study propagation of the turbulent spectrum toward the low wave numbers. Our primary goal is to compare the results for the evolving spectrum with the previous results obtained for the kinetic equation of weak wave turbulence. We demonstrate existence of a regime for which good agreement with the wave turbulence results is found in terms of the main features of the previously discussed self-similar solution. In particular, we find a reasonable agreement with the low-frequency and the high-frequency power-law asymptotics of the evolving solution, including the anomalous power-law exponent $x^* \approx 1.24$ for the three-dimensional waveaction spectrum. We also study the regimes of very weak turbulence, when the evolution is affected by the discreteness of the Fourier space, and the strong turbulence regime when emerging condensate modifies the wave dynamics and leads to formation of strongly nonlinear filamentary vortices.

Exact Analytical Solution for the Density Matrix of a Nonequilibrium Polariton Bose-Einstein Condensate.

In this Letter, we give an analytical quantum description of a nonequilibrium polariton Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) based on the solution of the master equation for the full polariton density matrix in the limit of fast thermalization. We find the density matrix of a nonequilibrium BEC, that takes into account quantum correlations between all polariton states. We show that the formation of BEC is accompanied by the build-up of cross-correlations between the ground state and the excited states reaching their highest values at the condensation threshold. Despite the nonequilibrium nature of polariton systems, we show the average population of polariton states exhibits the Bose-Einstein distribution with an almost zero effective chemical potential above the condensation threshold similar to an equilibrium BEC. We demonstrate that above threshold the effective temperature of polaritons drops below the reservoir temperature.

Cosmological perturbations for ultralight axionlike particles in a state of Bose-Einstein condensate

For ultra-light scalar particles like axions, dark matter can form a state of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with a coherent classical wave whose wavelength is of order galactic scales. In the context of an oscillating scalar field with mass $m$, this BEC description amounts to integrating out the field oscillations over the Hubble time scale $H^{-1}$ in the regime $m \gg H$. We provide a gauge-invariant general relativistic framework for studying cosmological perturbations in the presence of a self-interacting BEC associated with a complex scalar field. In particular, we explicitly show the difference of BECs from perfect fluids by taking into account cold dark matter, baryons, and radiation as a Schutz-Sorkin description of perfect fluids. We also scrutinize the accuracy of commonly used Newtonian treatment based on a quasi-static approximation for perturbations deep inside the Hubble radius. For a scalar field which starts to oscillate after matter-radiation equality, we show that, after the BEC formation, a negative self-coupling hardly leads to a Laplacian instability of the BEC density contrast. This is attributed to the fact that the Laplacian instability does not overwhelm the gravitational instability for self-interactions within the validity of the nonrelativistic BEC description. Our analysis does not accommodate the regime of parametric resonance which can potentially occur for a large field alignment during the transient epoch prior to the BEC formation.

Bose-Einstein condensation of pions in proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider using non-extensive Tsallis statistics

The possibility of formation of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) is studied in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 7$$ TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. A thermodynamically consistent non-extensive formulation of the identified hadron transverse momentum distributions is used to estimate the critical temperature required to form BEC of charged pions, which are the most abundant species in a multi-particle production process in hadronic and nuclear collisions. The obtained results have been contrasted with the systems produced in Pb-Pb collisions to have a better understanding. We observe an explicit dependency of BEC critical temperature and number of particles in the pion condensates on the non-extensive parameter q, which is a measure of degree of non-equilibrium – as q decreases, the critical temperature increases and approaches to the critical temperature obtained from Bose-Einstein statistics without non-extensivity. Studies are performed on the final state multiplicity dependence of number of particles in the pion condensates in a wide range of multiplicity covering hadronic and heavy-ion collisions, using the inputs from experimental transverse momentum spectra.

Bose–Einstein condensation of nonequilibrium magnons in confined systems

We study the formation of a room temperature magnon Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in nanoscopic systems and demonstrate that its lifetime is influenced by the spatial confinement. We predict how dipolar interactions and nonlinear magnon scattering assist in the generation of a metastable magnon BEC in energy-quantized nanoscopic devices. We verify our prediction by a full numerical simulation of the Landau–Lisfhitz–Gilbert equation and demonstrate the generation of magnon BEC in confined insulating magnets of yttrium iron garnet. We directly map out the nonlinear magnon scattering processes behind this phase transition to show how fast quantized thermalization channels allow the BEC formation in confined structures. Based on our results, we discuss a new mechanism to manipulate the BEC lifetime in nanoscaled systems. Our study greatly extends the freedom to study dynamics of magnon BEC in realisitc systems and to design integrated circuits for BEC-based applications at room temperature.

A mechanism for formation of Bose-Einstein condensation in cosmology

We introduce a toy model of scalar particles with a trilinear scalar coupling in cosmology. The trilinear coupling ϕ2χ causes production of non-relativistic ϕ particles through the process χχ → ϕϕ where, initially, only relativistic χ particles are present. We consider the initial times of χχ → ϕϕ and observe that the curved space effects promote formation of Bose-Einstein condensate of ϕ particles.

Excitation of coherent second sound waves in a dense magnon gas

Second sound is a quantum mechanical effect manifesting itself as a wave-like (in contrast with diffusion) heat transfer, or energy propagation, in a gas of quasi-particles. So far, this phenomenon has been observed only in an equilibrium gas of phonons existing in liquid/solid helium, or in dielectric crystals (Bi, NaF) at low temperatures. Here, we report observation of a room-temperature magnonic second sound, or a wave-like transport of both energy and spin angular momentum, in a quasi-equilibrium gas of magnons undergoing Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a ferrite film. Due to the contact of the magnon gas with pumping photons and phonons, dispersion of the magnonic second sound differ qualitatively from the phononic case, as there is no diffusion regime, and the second sound velocity remains finite at low wavenumbers. Formation of BEC in the gas of magnons modifies the second sound properties by creating an additional channel of energy relaxation.

Dynamics and thermalization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a Sinai-oscillator trap

We study numerically the evolution of Bose-Einstein condensate in the Sinai oscillator trap described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two dimensions. In the absence of interactions this trap mimics the properties of Sinai billiards where the classical dynamics is chaotic and the quantum evolution is described by generic properties of quantum chaos and random matrix theory. We show that, above a certain border, the nonlinear interactions between atoms lead to the emergence of dynamical thermalization which generates the statistical Bose-Einstein distribution over eigenmodes of the system without interactions. Below the thermalization border the evolution remains quasi-integrable. Such a Sinai oscillator trap, formed by the oscillator potential and a repulsive disk located in the vicinity of the center, had been already realized in rst experiments with the Bose-Einstein condensate formation by Ketterle group in 1995 and we argue that it can form a convenient test bed for experimental investigations of dynamical of thermalization. Possible links and implications for Kolmogorov turbulence in absence of noise are also discussed.

Coexistence of photonic and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in ideal atomic gases

We have studied conditions of photon Bose-Einstein condensate formation that is in thermodynamic equilibrium with ideal gas of two-level Bose atoms below the degeneracy temperature. Equations describing thermodynamic equilibrium in the system were formulated; critical temperatures and densities of photonic and atomic gas subsystems were obtained analytically. Coexistence conditions of these photonic and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates were found. There was predicted the possibility of an abrupt type of photon condensation in the presence of Bose condensate of ground-state atoms: it was shown that the slightest decrease of the temperature could cause a significant gathering of photons in the condensate. This case could be treated as a simple model of the situation known as "stopped light" in cold atomic gas. We also showed how population inversion of atomic levels can be created by lowering the temperature. The latter situation looks promising for light accumulation in atomic vapor at very low temperatures.

Temporally resolved second-order photon correlations of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate formation

Second-order time correlation measurements with a temporal resolution better than 3 ps were performed on a CdTe microcavity where spontaneous Bose-Einstein condensation is observed. After the laser pulse, the nonresonantly excited thermal polariton population relaxes into a coherent polariton condensate. Photon statistics of the light emitted by the microcavity evidences a clear phase transition from the thermal state to a coherent state, which occurs within 3.2 ps after the onset of stimulated scattering. Following this very fast transition, we show that the emission possesses a very high coherence that persists for more than 100 ps after the build-up of the condensate.

Fluorescence polarization imaging of Sisyphus cooling in an atomic beam

Sisyphus cooling plays an important role in many cold atom applications including the formation of Bose-Einstein condensates and collimation of atomic beams. Here we present a method for measuring the localization of atoms by monitoring the polarization of fluorescence, providing a quantitative two-dimensional image of the cooling process. We outline the concept and provide theoretical models for the optical pumping, cooling, and channeling mechanisms, and present experimental data revealing the development of strong fluorescence polarization in an atomic beam during transverse $(\mathrm{lin}\ensuremath{\perp}\mathrm{lin})$ cooling.

Bose–Einstein condensation in an ultra-hot gas of pumped magnons

Bose-Einstein condensation of quasi-particles such as excitons, polaritons, magnons and photons is a fascinating quantum mechanical phenomenon. Unlike the Bose-Einstein condensation of real particles (like atoms), these processes do not require low temperatures, since the high densities of low-energy quasi-particles needed for the condensate to form can be produced via external pumping. Here we demonstrate that such a pumping can create remarkably high effective temperatures in a narrow spectral region of the lowest energy states in a magnon gas, resulting in strikingly unexpected transitional dynamics of Bose-Einstein magnon condensate: the density of the condensate increases immediately after the external magnon flow is switched off and initially decreases if it is switched on again. This behaviour finds explanation in a nonlinear 'evaporative supercooling' mechanism that couples the low-energy magnons overheated by pumping with all the other thermal magnons, removing the excess heat, and allowing Bose-Einstein condensate formation.

Evolution and thermalization of dark matter axions in the condensed regime

We discuss the possibility that dark matter axions form a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) due to the gravitational self interactions. The formation of BEC occurs in the condensed regime, where the transition rate between different momentum states is large compared to the energy exchanged in the transition. The time evolution of the quantum state occupation number of axions in the condensed regime is derived based on the in-in formalism. We recover the expression for the thermalization rate due to self interaction of the axion field, which was obtained in the other literature. It is also found that the leading order contributions for interactions between axions and other species vanish, which implies that the axion BEC does not give any significant modifications on standard cosmological parameters.

Thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma and dynamical formation of Bose-Einstein Condensate

We report recent progress on understanding the thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma during the early stage in a heavy ion collision. The initially high overpopulation in the pre-equilibrium gluonic matter ("glasma") is shown to play a crucial role. The strongly interacting nature (and thus fast evolution) naturally arises as an emergent property of this pre-equilibrium matter where the intrinsic coupling is weak but the highly occupied gluon states coherently amplify the scattering. A possible transient Bose-Einstein Condensate is argued to form dynamically on a rather general ground. We develop the kinetic approach for describing this highly overpopulated system and find approximate scaling solutions as well as numerically study the onset of condensation. Finally we also discuss possible phenomenological implications.

Bose–Einstein condensation of magnons in ferromagnetic thin films

Experimental evidence for Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons at room temperature in a thin film of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) excited by parallel pumping is already available and different features of the experimental results have been explained qualitatively [Nature 443, 430 (2006)]. In the present work, we explain quantitatively different aspects of this experimental observation through spin wave treatment. In the case of parallel pumping field, we have developed a formula for the time required for the formation of magnon BEC in a thin film of ferromagnetic material. This relation is found to be in good agreement with known experimental results. In a similar treatment we predict the condition for the formation of BEC of magnons in the case of perpendicular pumping.
