Digitalisation and ongoing tax supervision. Monitoring of income tax and value added tax taxpayers after 2007
  • Jan 28, 2026
  • Doradztwo Podatkowe - Biuletyn Instytutu Studiów Podatkowych
  • Jakub Jarosław Szymanek

This article analyzes the methods of exercising ongoing supervision over taxpayers of personal and corporate income taxes and value added tax in the Polish tax system since 2007. Particular attention is paid to the effects of the elimination of periodic tax returns in income taxes and the importance of subsequent digitalization reforms, including the introduction of electronic tax records and the St andard Audit File (SAF-T) structures. The article argues that despite the ongoing digitization of taxpayers’ accounting obligations, the National Revenue Administration (KRA) still lacks the tools to enable ongoing, systematic monitoring of income tax payers throughout the tax year. However, the supervision model for value added tax has evolved differently, with tax authorities receiving periodic, and now almost continuous, ettlement data for years, particularly through the JPK_VAT and the National E-Invoice System (KRS).The analysis leads to the conclusion that the introduction of electronic tax books and new JPK structures in income taxes does not fundamentally change the consequential nature of tax supervision in this area, and this digitisation is predominantly of a technical rather than system ic nature.

Focus on Psychodrama-The Therapeutic Aspects of Psychodrama
  • Jan 23, 2026
  • Journal of Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy
  • Alton Barbour

This book was released in 1992 and, possibly because it was published in England, has escaped notice until now. It is long overdue for an examination and serious consideration in this country. Because it is an introductory psychodrama book, a practitioner or student in the field might ask why there would be a need for yet another such book on psychodrama. In fact, the author, Peter Kellermann, asks the same question in his introduction, at the same time that he identifies 18 such introductory books. He answers that this one is a systematic analysis of the therapeutic components of psychodrama and therefore is different. In other words, his is not just another "how to" book but has a different healing-aspect emphasis and is more theoretical in nature. In addition to 14 chapters, there is a foreword by Jonathan Moreno in which he remarks that the development of theory in psychodrama is now lagging behind that of application; hence, there is a need for such a book. Moreno also emphasizes the ongoing need to understand and to develop the underlying theoretical structure of the psychodramatic method.

Guy Rocher (1924–2025), Sociologist and Public Intellectual
  • Jan 14, 2026
  • Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie
  • Simon Langlois

ABSTRACT This in memoriam article highlights the contribution of Guy Rocher, who passed away in Montreal on September 3, 2025, at the age of 101. He was a brilliant intellectual and a man of action, dedicated and committed to promoting social justice. He was closely involved in numerous social changes inspired by his reformist perspective. He was an important pioneer who leaves a fundamental and precious legacy to sociology, to which he was so devoted. He was driven by the ethics of conviction and responsibility dear to Max Weber, an author whose importance in sociology he repeatedly emphasized. His book Introduction to General Sociology , translated into 12 languages, is a classic work. In Talcott Parsons et la Sociologie Américaine (1972), Rocher set himself the goal of making the American sociologist's thought known and synthesizing it in a clear and accessible manner, a work “clearer than those of Parsons himself” (A. Giddens). Canada and Quebec have lost a brilliant intellectual and a man of action, dedicated and committed to promoting social justice. Involved in numerous social changes inspired by his reformist perspective, Rocher was an important pioneer who leaves a fundamental and precious legacy to sociology.

Agbiboa, Daniel E.They eat our sweat: transport labor, corruption, and everyday survival in urban Nigeria. 280 pp., illus., bibliogr. Oxford: University Press, 2022. £97.00 (hardback)
  • Jan 12, 2026
  • Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute
  • Daniel Jordan Smith

In this ambitious and insightful book, Daniel Agbiboa examines corruption through a rich and vivid ethnographic account of the transportation sector in Lagos, a megacity of upwards of 20 million people, and the commercial capital of Nigeria. The book draws on an innovative mode of participant observation, a thorough and erudite reading of relevant literatures, an ability to think creatively about long-standing theoretical conundrums, and a fundamental commitment to the benefits of an anthropological approach to studying and understanding the complex processes and practices that are too frequently and too easily glossed simply as corruption. Agbiboa's sophisticated, careful, and nuanced examination of corruption as seen through the prism of everyday transportation in Lagos defies rendering as a simple argument. But to the extent that I can encapsulate the main point, it is something like this: the widespread corruption that ordinary Nigerians must navigate – and in so doing help reproduce – is not the result of some kind of deep cultural trait; rather, it is a response to a system and a set of conditions that compel citizens to participate in order to survive. But what makes They eat our sweat such an illuminating read is not just Agbiboa's explanation for the ubiquity and durability of corruption in Nigeria; it is equally his attention to the lives and livelihoods of his interlocutors, which enables him to convey the violence and the humour, the anger and the conviviality, the ambivalences and ambiguities, and the paradoxes and contradictions that Nigerians are all too aware of when it comes to corruption in their society. Along the way, Agbiboa also builds a theory of the state. For him, it is imperative to understand the state as constituted through practice. He argues – and shows persuasively – that many of the social relations that create and reproduce the state in Nigeria are manifested in the interdependence of petty and grand corruption. Agbiboa does not contend that petty corruption is caused by grand corruption, or vice versa. Nor does he suggest that average Nigerians are to blame for the corrupt leaders they have. But he demonstrates that the grand corruption of political elites cannot be fully understood, including its apparent intractability, without seeing how it is protected and enabled through the intersecting practices of everyday corruption on the part of ordinary citizens. Further, he insists on the important point that corruption among politicians and government officials is not necessarily evidence of a ‘weak state’, as is commonly assumed in scholarly literature. Instead, Agbiboa recognizes that corruption can be a sign of a strong state, at least for those who control it. While I do not have space to outline or summarize each of the chapters, I want to point out a few highlights that I especially appreciated. Though the book's introduction is long and at times seems to meander across a wide range of themes, it constitutes essential reading for anyone interested in understanding corruption generally, and of course in Nigeria in particular. The ground that Agbiboa covers is impressive, not only unpacking the concept of corruption and developing a bottom-up theory of the state but also offering trenchant criticism of taken-for-granted ideas about the distinction between formality and informality. The author further parses the meanings and analytical utility of concepts like moral economy and social norms. Even where Agbiboa cannot offer any final resolutions, his thinking is creative and smart, and his writing is lucid. For anyone who has spent time in Africa and observed the plethora of sayings painted on all manner of vehicles, especially public transportation buses, chapter 4, ‘The art of urban survival’, will prove a fun and illuminating read. Agbiboa collected hundreds of examples and analyses them to reveal everything from biographical details of drivers and owners to astute popular understandings of Nigeria's political economy. But for me, the most intriguing feature of Agbiboa's fieldwork was the two months he worked as a conductor on a danfo, one of the ubiquitous minibuses transporting passengers through Lagos's notorious ‘go slows’. The resulting observations, experiences, and insights are scattered across the book. As a reader, I wished for a whole chapter describing the life of a danfo conductor in intimate detail. But it is the quality of the book as is that makes me wish for even more. Readers will be richly rewarded by this outstanding ethnography.

Elise Grilli (1906-1969): Pioneer American Historian and Critic of Japanese Art = エリス・グリーリ(1906–1969) : 先駆者の日本美術の学者と評論家
  • Jan 1, 2026
  • U.S.-Japan Women's Journal
  • Christine M.E Guth

Abstract: Art in Japan was serious business in the aftermath of World War II and the Allied Occupation. Elise Grilli became immersed in this world during her more than two decades in Japan, between 1947 and 1969. As an art critic for The Japan Times , historian, and teacher, she championed the art of Japan, past and present, on its own terms, challenging orientalist stereotypes of its derivative and spiritual character. She presciently recognized as rising talents many practicing artists who have since gained international acclaim. Her ability to analogize developments in Japan within wider geographic, historical, and cultural frameworks helped other non-Japanese to appreciate its distinguishing qualities. Her many introductory books on major Japanese artists opened the door to Japan for a wide public. Although well-known and respected both in Japan and the United States during her lifetime, Grilli's pioneeering contributions to the understanding of Japanese art have been little recognized owing to her premature death at age 63, her gender, and her lack of a fixed professional base in the United States. This article redresses this oversight by drawing attention to her journalistic and art-historical writings.

The current research aims to analyze the content of the Modern and Contemporary History of Arab Countries textbook for the sixth grade, according to Spranger's classification of religious, political, and theoretical values. This research aims to answer the following question: To what extent are religious, political, and theoretical values present in the Modern and Contemporary History of Arab Countries textbook for the sixth grade, according to Spranger's values classification? To answer this question, the researchers adopted a descriptive and analytical approach (content analysis) to analyze the content of the Modern and Contemporary History of Arab Countries textbook for the sixth grade, according to Spranger's values classification, as it is appropriate for the nature of this research. The research community was limited to the content of the Modern and Contemporary History of Arab Countries textbook, which is scheduled to be taught to sixth grade students (eighth edition), for the 2024-2025 academic year. The book's introduction, chapter questions, and table of contents, which totaled (12) pages, were excluded from the analysis. Thus, the number of pages subject to analysis became (192) pages, out of (204) pages. The validity of the instrument was verified by presenting it to a group of experts and specialists in educational sciences. The psychological tool received their unanimous approval. The analytical stability was extracted in two ways, using the Holsti equation: consistency over time, with a coefficient of agreement of 0.95, and consistency between analysts, with a percentage of agreement of 0.92.

  • Sasha Montgomery + 5 more

Objective:To examine differences in infant-directed talk activities (e.g., reading) before and after introduction of a NICU book cart.Study Design:We retrospectively analyzed medical record data of infants born <32 weeks gestational age (n = 147) whose NICU stay occurred in the year before or after book cart implementation (6/1/2022). Talk rates and frequencies were calculated from clinically charted family and staff talk data; talk amounts were compared across pre- and post-book cart cohorts, adjusting for covariates. Results:Cohorts displayed equivalent clinical/demographic variables, except for higher bronchopulmonary dysplasia rates in the post-book cart cohort. Post-book cart family and staff engaged in more talk than those in the pre-book cart cohort, with staff showing higher talk rates and frequencies than family across both cohorts. Conclusion:Family and staff with access to a NICU book cart engaged in more talk, suggesting a strategy to support infant speech exposure.

The Black Man Cannot Write: Storytelling is My Other Mother
  • Nov 18, 2025
  • Writing in Practice
  • Ignatius Mabasa

Before the introduction of books, radio, and film through colonisation, folklore functioned as a vital form of home-schooling for the indigenous people of Zimbabwe. When creative writing in Zimbabwean indigenous languages began, the first Shona novel, Feso (1956), was widely regarded as a written folktale. Forty-three years later, in 1999, the author’s debut Shona novel, Mapenzi, also bore the strong imprint of folklore. This autoethnographic paper reflects on the enduring influence of oral storytelling during Zimbabwe’s transition from a traditional to a modern society under British colonial rule, and examines how this oral tradition shaped the author’s creative writing career in a context that lacked – and continues to lack – formal writing schools. Drawing on Homi Bhabha’s theory of the “third space,” the paper explores storytelling as a powerful tool for education, cultural preservation, language development, and creative expression. It concludes by advocating for the revival of Zimbabwe’s storytelling heritage, not merely as a means of transmitting traditional knowledge, but as a platform for co-creation – one that fosters the emergence of new, hybrid identities and bodies of knowledge.

Who Are Blake’s Eternals?
  • Oct 30, 2025
  • Blake/An Illustrated Quarterly
  • Christopher Z Hobson

This essay answers the question in its title by analyzing Blake’s differing presentations of Eternal beings from their introduction in The First Book of Urizen (1794) through his culminating long poem Jerusalem (1804–20). The essay proposes, as well, a meaning for this evolution. It argues that the limitation of Eternal awareness to immortals and the conception of a sharp divide between the eternal and material worlds, in Urizen’s dominant narrative, clashed with earlier Blake presentations of similar issues, but that he turned back to his earlier conceptualizations in late work. In doing so, he came to present mortal humans, not only immortals, as able to inhabit Eternity, a possibility all but excluded in Urizen.

  • Robert Weinberg

This article examines the creation of Dr. John E. Esslemont’s seminal work Bahá’u’lláh and the New Era (1923), the first comprehensive introductory book in English on the Bahá’í Faith. Drawing particularly on the extensive correspondence between Esslemont and Luṭfu’lláh Ḥakím, the article traces Esslemont’s journey from his initial encounter with the Bahá’í teachings in 1914 to the book’s publication and subsequent global impact. The unique involvement of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá and Shoghi Effendi in reviewing and correcting the manuscript is highlighted, along with Esslemont’s collaboration with prominent early Bahá’ís. Rather than specifically addressing the book’s content, this paper examines its preparation and publication, its rapid translation and worldwide dissemination in multiple languages. Finally, Esslemont’s legacy is considered, both through his book and his personal example as a pioneering Western adherent of the Bahá’í Faith. Esslemont’s original spelling of Bahá’í names and terminology in his correspondence has been maintained.

There are two The view regarding the source of writing this tafsir is firstly as a translation of Baidhawi's tafsir, secondly as a translation of the books of Jalalain and Al-Khazin. To determine the method of writing Tafsir Tarjuman al-Mustafid, we can look at it from two angles, namely the angle of interpretation and the angle of meaning. When we explore it from the perspective of a method of interpretation that explains the sequence of verses and explains the aspects and contents of the verse content, this is the tahlili method. Meanwhile, when viewed from the point of view of the meaning explained in the Tafsir, the method applied in writing the Tafsir is the ijmali method. Because the explanation is short, concise, easy to understand and suitable for beginners.

Publications on mathematical game theory with many (not less than 2) players can be conditionally distributed in four directions: non-cooperative, hierarchical, cooperative and coalition games. The last two, in turn, are divided into games with side and non-side payments and games with transferable and nontransferable payoffs, respectively. If the first ones are actively studied (St. Petersburg State Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Control Processes, St. Petersburg Institute of Economics and Mathematics, Institute of Applied Mathematical Research of Karelian Research Centre RAS), the games with non-transferable payoffs are not covered. The paper proposes the conception of objections and counter-objections. The initial investigations were published in two monographs of E.I. Vilkas, the Lithuanian mathematician (the student of N.N. Vorobjev, the professor of St. Petersburg University). For the differential games this conception was first applied by E.M. Waisbord in 1974, then it was continued by the first author of the present article together with E.M. Waisbord in the book Introduction to the theory of differential games of n-persons and its application (1980), and in the monograph Equilibrium of objections and counterobjections (2010) by V.I. Zhukovskiy. The paper proves that in еру mathematical model there is no Nash equilibrium but there are equilibria of objections and conterobjections and simultaneously Pareto maximality.

This article analyzes the different editions of the book Introduction to Legal Science, by the Brazilian jurist Hermes Lima, between the years 1933 to 1960. The differences between the editions can show the transformations of Hermes Lima’s way of thinking about law and the legal and political changes in that period. To carry out this comparison between the different editions, some aspects were selected, such as: (i) the sociological interpretation of the legal phenomenon; (ii) debates on the role of the State and the law; (iii) the presence of Marxist theory; and (iv) the connections to the Brazilian legal-political context. One cannot consider the different editions the same book because they are very different in form and content. Through the years, there was a pasteurization process. There was a softening of political and sociological debates that could harm the more general aim to craft this introductory guide for law students. Despite having lost part of this originality, perhaps it was precisely this process of adaptation that ensured the longevity of the book.

Enacting Reading Comprehension: Using Diverse Literature to Engage Children's Critical, Sociopolitical Knowledge
  • Nov 12, 2024
  • Reading Research Quarterly
  • Wintre Foxworth Johnson + 2 more

Abstract The current climate of K‐12 education in the United States has seen a narrowing of literacy instructional practices, exponential amounts of book bans, and contrived hysteria about liberal indoctrination and Critical Race Theory (CRT). Yet, as the world becomes increasingly connected across difference, and as research increasingly demonstrates that we must engage young children from all backgrounds in discussions about sociopolitical issues, it is urgent that classroom teachers foreground children's experiential knowledge in comprehension instruction. In this article, we address the following question: In three early elementary literacy contexts, how did educators use culturally sustaining practices with diverse children's literature to enact reading comprehension and engage young children in critical, sociopolitical meaning making? Three teacher educators of Color share findings from qualitative studies in the United States Northeast and Southwest that examine this integration with the use of diverse children's literature. The first finding illustrates how teachers utilized book introductions to situate a diverse group of early elementary‐aged students in various sociopolitical issues and engage them in critical readings about texts. The second finding illustrates how a series of after‐school literature circle discussions enabled first‐grade African American children to make meaning dialogically and communally about enslavement. The third finding illustrates how the teacher created space for second‐grade Latinx students to translanguage as they drew on multiple reading comprehension strategies and made sense of immigration. The implications from these studies invite a rethinking of the dominant paradigm of reading comprehension instruction.

What Have Introductory Books on Legal Reasoning Ever Done for Us?
  • Nov 4, 2024
  • Amicus Curiae
  • Geoffrey Samuel

The purpose of this article is to investigate, and to review, a number of recent introductions to law with the emphasis being on those introducing students to legal reasoning. The investigation will have as its focus not just reasoning methodology but equally the ontological and epistemological foundations upon which the reasoning is based. The investigation will be comparative in its orientation; it will examine, in particular, works from common lawyers and French jurists, with references also to books produced by Roman law specialists (Romanists). It will show that many introductions are based on an ontological foundation that emphasizes rules—the rule model—and that, with regard to some of the introductory books, this emphasis has engendered what is arguably a simplistic view of legal knowledge and method. Are such books, it might be asked, epistemologically reliable? To help answer this question, another comparative orientation to be undertaken is to examine some introductory works in the social sciences in order to see not only how these works may differ in their approach to knowledge and methodology but also how methodological discussions in the social sciences could be valuable for lawyers. Keywords: analogy; epistemology; introductions; logic; ontology; perception; rule model; syllogism.
