Influence of using different translucent composite resins for customizing fiber post on the bond strength of self-adhesive cement to root dentin.

This study evaluated the influence of different translucent resins (Z350 and Opallis) for customizing fiber posts and light-curing the cementation system using different LED equipment (V, Valo or R, Radii-Cal) on the bond strength and adhesive failure pattern at 24 h and 6 months. Eighty roots were prepared and divided into 4 groups (n=20): ZV (Z350 resin and LED Valo), ZR (Z350 resin and LED Radii-Cal), OV (Opallis resin and LED Valo), OR (Opallis resin and LED Radii-Cal). After post space preparation, the fiber post was customized and cemented with self-adhesive cement and light-curing using V or R LED equipment. Bond strength values were submitted to 2-way ANOVA test. ZV and ZR showed higher bond strength values than the other groups at 6 months of evaluation (p<0.05). The Z350 resin has a favorable influence on the bond strength of self-adhesive cement to root dentin, regardless of the LED polymerization equipment used.

Impact of Immediate and Delayed Photo-activation of Self-adhesive Resin Cements on Bonding Efficacy and Water Uptake Under Simulated Pulpal Pressure.

This study investigated the effect of immediate versus delayed photo-activation on the bonding performance and water uptake of self-adhesive (SA) resin cements under simulated pulpal pressure (SPP). The occlusal dentin surface was exposed in 66 extracted third molars. Resin composite cylinders were cemented to dentin under SPP, with either RelyX Unicem 2 (RU) (3M Oral Care, St Paul, MN, USA) or Maxcem Elite (MC) (Kerr, Orange, CA, USA). Each cement group was equally divided into three groups (n=8 each) according to the time elapsed between placement and photo-activation: immediate activation (IM), 30-second delayed activation (D30), or 120-second delayed activation (D120). Shear bond strength (SBS) was measured, and the type of failure was determined using a stereomicroscope. Three additional samples from each experimental subgroup were used for confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) analysis. A fluorescent dye solution was added to the pulpal fluid reservoir, then a CLSM was used to detect the dye distribution within the tooth-restoration interface. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey post-hoc test were used to analyze the SBS results (α=0.05). D30 resulted in a significantly higher mean SBS in the two cement groups than IM and D120 (p<0.05). RU showed significantly higher SBS values than MC regardless of the time of light activation (p<0.05). RU showed less dye uptake confined to the cement-dentin interface compared to the MC groups, which showed dye uptake throughout the entire thickness of the cement layer and gap formation at the interface, especially in the D120 group. The 30-second photo-activation delay group significantly improved the bond strength of SA cements. Delaying the photo-activation to 120 seconds increased pulpal fluid uptake by SA cements and compromised the integrity of the bonded interfaces.

Influence of Different Surface Pretreatments of Zirconium Dioxide Reinforced Lithium Disilicate Ceramics on the Shear Bond Strength of Self-Adhesive Resin Cement.

AimTo analyze the influence of different surface pretreatments of zirconium dioxide reinforced lithium disilicate ceramics on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement.Materials and methodsEighty-four zirconium reinforced lithium disilicate disc Vita suprinity (Vita Zahnfabrick, Bad Säckingen, Germany) 14x12x2 mm specimens were fabricated according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The specimens were embedded in acrylic resin blocks and randomly divided in seven groups (n=12/each) accorrding to the treatment: Group 1- 10% hydrofluoric acid; Group 2- silane; Group 3- hydrofluoric and silane; Group 4- sandblasting with silane; Group 5- Er: YAG laser+ silane; Group 6- Nd: YAG laser + silane; and the control group, in which the specimens were not treated. Round shape composite discs (Filtek Bulk fill, 3M ESPE, St.Paul, Minnesota, USA) with 3.5 mm diameter, were made for shear bond strength testing, and then cemented to the ceramic sample surface using composite cement (RelyX U200 Automix, 3M ESPE, Neuss, Germany). After cementing the composite disc on the sample, the samples were subjected to shear bond strength test of 10 N with a “stress rate” of 1 MPa / s. To determine the nature of the fracture (adhesive, cohesive or adhesive-cohesive), the broken samples were examined under a stereomicroscope. The ANOVA test and the Tukey test were used to compare the values ​​of the bond strength characteristics between different types of materials. All tests were performed with a significance level of α = 0.05.ResultsThere was a significant difference in the shear bond strength of self-adhesive cement to dental lithium-disilicate ceramics reinforced with zirconium dioxide after different preparation protocols (p<0, 05). The treatment of lithium disilicate ceramics reinforced with zirconium dioxide by silanization, sandblasting + silanization, Nd: YAG + silanization resulted in significantly higher bond strength compared to the control group. There was statistically higher bond strength of self-adhesive cement after pretreatment of lithium disilicate ceramics Nd: YAG + silanization compared to Er: YAG + silanization (p <0.05). Adhesive fracture dominated in the control group, sandblasting + silanization group, and in the laser groups, while mixed fracture dominated in other groups.ConclusionUnder the limitations of this study, the Nd:YAG irradiation with silanization could be used as pretreatment for providing greater shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to zirconium reinforced lithium disilicate.

Effect of a root dentin deproteinization protocol on self-adhesive cementation of fiber posts

Aim: This study evaluated the effect of a root dentin deproteinization protocol on the bond strength of fiber post cemented with self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four single-rooted teeth were randomly divided into two groups (n=12), as follows: G1 - cementation with self-adhesive resin cement RelyX U200 (3M/ESPE) according to manufacturer's instructions; G2 - treatment of root dentin with phosphoric acid at 37% for 15 s followed by sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at 5% for 5 minutes, and post cementation according to manufacturer's instructions. A light-emitting diode (LED) unit was used for photoactivation and after 24h at 37 °C in absolute humidity, teeth were sectioned into slices of 1 mm divided by different root thirds (cervical, middle and apical) and submitted to the push-out bond strength test. Two-criteria ANOVA was used to determine the statistical significance between groups (p<0.05). Results: No statistical difference in bond strength between group cemented as manufacturer's instructions and group submitted to deproteinization was detected (p>0.05). As well as there was no statistical difference between the different root thirds evaluated (p>0.05). Conclusions: The deproteinization protocol proposed was not able to improve the bond strength of self-adhesive cement to root dentin.

The impact of etching time and material on bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to eroded enamel.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of pre-etching time and material on shear bond strength (SBS) of self-adhesive resin cements to eroded and sound enamel. Eroded enamel specimens were assigned into 5 groups (n=20 each) based on enamel surface treatment as follow: Group N, eroded enamel (without surface pre-treatment); Group PH15, 35% H3PO4 etching for 15 s; Group PH30, 35% H3PO4 etching for 30 s; Group L30, 20% lactic acid etching for 30 s and Group L60, 20% lactic acid etching for 60 s.Composite blocks were fabricated and cemented to enamel surfaces with one of two self-adhesive cements. Notched-edge SBS was assessed. Bond strength of self-adhesive cement to eroded enamel surface significantly enhanced following application of 20% lactic acid for 30 s.

Effect of 2% chlorhexidine treated coronal dentin on bond strength of two self-adhesives cements

Despite advances in adhesive dentistry, lasting bonds between indirect restorations and dentin remain a challenge. Objective: Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine on the bond strength of self-adhesive cements to dentin after storage for 24 h and 90 days. Material and methods: Forty-eight human third molars crowns were included in polyvinyl chloride matrices using acrylic resin and worn to expose a flat dentin area. The specimens were randomly distributed into 8 groups (n = 12) in accordance with the self-adhesive cement (Rely X U200 and Smart Cem 2), the dentin treatment (application or not of 2 % chlorhexidine digluconate solution for 1 min) and the storage period (24 h or 90 d). Two cylinders’ cements (1.4 x 1 mm) were constructed on the dentin surfaces of each sample, stored in distilled water for 24 h or 90 days and submitted to a micro-shear test. Subsequently, a failure analysis was performed to classify the failure into adhesive, cohesive, and mixed. Data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey (0.05) tests. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the materials (Rely X U200 > Smart Cem 2 – p < 0.05) regardless of the surface treatment and the storage period. Conclusion: The chlorhexidine application did not affect the immediate or delayed bond strength values, regardless of the self-adhesive cement.

Effect of Enamel and Dentin Surface Treatment on the Self-Adhesive Resin Cement Bond Strength.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of enamel and dentin surface treatment on the micro-shear bond strength of self-adhesive cement. Seventy-two extracted third molars had their crowns embedded in acrylic resin and worn to obtain a flat enamel or dentin surface. The enamel and dentin specimens were randomly assigned to 8 groups (n=12) that were based on surface treatment (11.5% polyacrylic acid solution or no treatment), substrate condition (wet or dry) and storage period (1 day or 90 days), and treated accordingly. Cylinders (1 × 1 mm) were fabricated using self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200) following the manufacturer's instructions. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for either 1 day or 90 days and subjected to micro-shear bond strength test (EMIC DL 2000 at 0.5 mm/min). After this, the failure type of the specimens was determined. Data were subjected to statistical analysis (a=0.05). According to the results, the 11.5% polyacrylic acid application decreased the bond strength in both enamel and dentin samples. The moist groups showed higher bond strength than the dry ones, regardless of the substrate and surface treatment. Storage period did not influence bond strength. In conclusion, surface treatment with 11.5% polyacrylic acid and absence of moisture decreased the bond strength of the resin-cement (RelyU200), regardless of the storage period.

Effect of Curing Mode on Shear Bond Strength of Self-Adhesive Cement to Composite Blocks.

To overcome the disadvantages of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) processed indirect restorations using glass-ceramics and other ceramics, resin nano ceramic, which has high strength and wear resistance with improved polish retention and optical properties, was introduced. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength and fracture pattern of indirect CAD/CAM composite blocks cemented with two self-etch adhesive cements with different curing modes. Sand-blasted CAD/CAM composite blocks were cemented using conventional resin cement, Rely X Ultimate Clicker (RXC, 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) with Single Bond Universal (SB, 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) for the control group or two self-adhesive resin cements: Rely X U200 (RXU, 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) and G-CEM Cerasmart (GC, GC corporation, Tokyo, Japan). RXU and GC groups included different curing modes (light-curing (L) and auto-curing (A)). Shear bond strength (SBS) analyses were performed on all the specimens. The RXC group revealed the highest SBS and the GC A group revealed the lowest SBS. According to Tukey’s post hoc test, the RXC group showed a significant difference compared to the GC A group (p < 0.05). For the curing mode, RXU A and RXU L did not show any significant difference between groups and GC A and GC L did not show any significant difference either. Most of the groups except RXC and RXU L revealed adhesive failure patterns predominantly. The RXC group showed a predominant cohesive failure pattern in their CAD/CAM composite, LavaTM Ultimate (LU, 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA). Within the limitations of this study, no significant difference was found regarding curing modes but more mixed fracture patterns were showed when using the light-curing mode than when using the self-curing mode.

Influence of Temporary Cements on the Bond Strength of Self-Adhesive Cement to the Metal Coronal Substrate.

This research evaluated the influence of temporary cements (eugenol-containing [EC] or eugenol-free [EF]) on the tensile strength of Ni-Cr copings fixed with self-adhesive resin cement to the metal coronal substrate. Thirty-six temporary crowns were divided into 4 groups (n=9) according to the temporary cements: Provy, Dentsply (eugenol-containing), Temp Cem, Vigodent (eugenol-containing), RelyX Temp NE, 3M ESPE (eugenol-free) and Temp Bond NE, Kerr Corp (eugenol-free). After 24 h of temporary cementation, tensile strength tests were performed in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min and 1 kN (100 kgf) load cell. Afterwards, the cast metal cores were cleaned by scraping with curettes and air jet. Thirty-six Ni-Cr copings were cemented to the cast metal cores with self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200, 3M ESPE). Tensile strength tests were performed again. In the temporary cementation, Temp Bond NE (12.91 ± 2.54) and Temp Cem (12.22 ± 2.96) presented the highest values of tensile strength and were statistically similar to each other (p>0.05). Statistically significant difference (p<0.05) was observed only between Provy (164.44 ± 31.23) and Temp Bond NE (88.48 ± 21.83) after cementation of Ni-Cr copings with self-adhesive resin cement. In addition, Temp Cem (120.68 ± 48.27) and RelyX Temp NE (103.04 ± 26.09) showed intermediate tensile strength values. In conclusion, the Provy eugenol-containing temporary cement was associated with the highest bond strength among the resin cements when Ni-Cr copings were cemented to cast metal cores. However, the eugenol cannot be considered a determining factor in increased bond strength, since the other tested cements (1 eugenol-containing and 2 eugenol-free) were similar.

Resin Tags Have No Contribution On Push-Out Bond Strength Of Self-Adhesive Resin Cement

Aim: To assess the contribution of resin tags in the interfacial bond strength of self-adhesive cement used to lute fiber posts into root canals. Methodology: Twenty extracted human canine teeth were selected and root filled. Roots were randomly assigned into two groups (n=10) according to pre-treatment of root dentin: non-etched (G1) or etched using 37% phosphoric acid (G2). Glass fiber posts (White Post) were luted into the root canals using the self-adhesive cement RelyXTM UniChem. Before insertion of the post, the cement was labeled with Rhodamine B isothiocyanate. Roots were sectioned transversally into slices of 1.5 mm thickness to perform the tests at the coronal, middle and apical regions of the root canal. Each slice was analyzed using confocal laser scanning microscopy to determine the presence or absence of resin tags, and then, subjected to a push-out test. Bond strengths data (MPa) were analyzed by Student t-test (α=0.05). Results: The qualitative analysis of the post-dentin interface revealed that was not possible to observe the formation of resin tags into the root dentin in G1, whereas all slices belonging to G2 exhibited the presence of resin tags. For the push-out test, there were no significant differences between G1 (10.5 ± 3.53) and G2 (10.61 ± 3.84) groups (p<0.05) in all root canal regions. Conclusions: Resin tags, as a result of root dentin etching, did not affect the push-out bond strength of fiber posts to root canals when using the self-adhesive cement RelyXTM Uni Cem.

The effect of a diode laser and traditional irrigants on the bond strength of self-adhesive cement

PURPOSEThe purpose of this study was to compare the effect of a diode laser and traditional irrigants on the bond strength of self-adhesive cement.MATERIALS AND METHODSFifty-five incisors extracted due to periodontal problems were used. All teeth were instrumented using a set of rotary root canal instruments. The post spaces were enlarged for a No.14 (diameter, 1.4 mm) Snowlight (Abrasive technology, OH, USA) glass fiber reinforced composite post with matching drill. The teeth were randomly divided into 5 experimental groups of 11 teeth each. The post spaces were treated with the followings: Group 1: 5 mL 0.9% physiological saline; Group 2: 5 mL 5.25% sodium hypochlorite; Group 3: 5 mL 17% ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA), Group 4: 37% orthophosphoric acid and Group 5: Photodynamic diode laser irradiation for 1 minute after application of light-active dye solution. Snowlight posts were luted with self-adhesive resin cement. Each root was sectioned perpendicular to its long axis to create 1 mm thick specimens. The push-out bond strength test method was used to measure bond strength. One tooth from each group was processed for scanning electron microscopic analysis.RESULTSBond strength values were as follow: Group 1 = 4.15 MPa; Group 2 = 3.00 MPa; Group 3 = 4.45 MPa; Group 4 = 6.96 MPa; and Group 5 = 8.93 MPa. These values were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey honestly significant difference test (P<.05). Significantly higher bond strength values were obtained with the diode laser and orthophosphoric acid (P<.05). There were no differences found between the other groups (P>.05).CONCLUSIONOrthophosphoric acid and EDTA were more effective methods for removing the smear layer than the diode laser. However, the diode laser and orthophosphoric acid were more effective at the cement dentin interface than the EDTA, Therefore, modifying the smear layer may be more effective when a self-adhesive system is used.

Influence of temporary cement contamination on the surface free energy and dentine bond strength of self-adhesive cements

Objectives The surface free energy and dentine bond strength of self-adhesive cements were examined after the removal of temporary cements. Methods The labial dentine surfaces of bovine mandibular incisors were wet ground with #600-grit SiC paper. Acrylic resin blocks were luted to the prepared dentine surfaces using HY Bond Temporary Cement Hard (HY), IP Temp Cement (IP), Fuji TEMP (FT) or Freegenol Temporary Cement (TC), and stored for 1 week. After removal of the temporary cements with an ultrasonic tip, the contact angle values of five specimens per test group were determined for the three test liquids, and the surface-energy parameters of the dentine surfaces were calculated. The dentine bond strengths of the self-adhesive cements were measured after removal of the temporary cements in a shear mode at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. The data were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's HSD test. Results For all surfaces, the value of the estimated surface tension component γ S d (dispersion) was relatively constant at 41.7–43.3 mJ m −2. After removal of the temporary cements, the value of the γ S h (hydrogen-bonding) component decreased, particularly with FT and TC. The dentine bond strength of the self-adhesive cements was significantly higher for those without temporary cement contamination (8.2–10.6 MPa) than for those with temporary cement contamination (4.3–7.1 MPa). Conclusions The γ S values decreased due to the decrease of γ S h values for the temporary cement-contaminated dentine. Contamination with temporary cements led to lower dentine bond strength. Clinical significance The presence of temporary cement interferes with the bonding performance of self-adhesive cements to dentine. Care should be taken in the methods of removal of temporary cement when using self-adhesive cements.

Effect of Dentin-cleaning Techniques on the Shear Bond Strength of Self-adhesive Resin Luting Cement to Dentin

This in vitro study evaluated the influence of different cleansing techniques on the bond strength of self-adhesive cement to dentin. A total of 33 noncarious human molars were sectioned mesiodistally and embedded in chemically cured resin with the buccal or lingual surfaces facing upward. Superficial dentin was exposed and resin disk provisional restorations were cemented to the dentin surfaces with noneugenol provisional cement and were stored in distilled water at 37°C. After seven days, the provisional restorations were removed and 13 specimens were randomly assigned to each of the five groups (n=13), according to the following cleansing treatments: G1-excavator (control); G2-0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate; G3-40% polyacrylic acid; G4-mixture of flour pumice and water; and G5-sandblasting with 50 μm aluminum oxide particles at a pressure of 87 psi. Resin composite disks (Filtek Supreme Plus, 3M ESPE Dental Products, St Paul, MN, USA) 4.7 (±0.1) mm in diameter and 3.0 (±0.5) mm in height were cemented with self-adhesive cement (RelyX Unicem, 3M ESPE), photocured, and stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours. Shear bond strength testing was conducted using a universal test machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until failure. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey-B rank order test. Sandblasting with aluminum oxide (11.32 ± 1.70 MPa) produced significantly higher shear bond strength values compared with any other treatment groups (p<0.05). No significant differences were found between G1-control (7.74 ± 1.72 MPa), G2-chlorhexidine (6.37 ± 1.47 MPa), and G4-pumice (7.33 ± 2.85 MPa) (p<0.05).

Effect of thermal cycling on the bond strength of self-adhesive cements to fiber posts

The aim of this study was to assess the push-out bond strengths of self-adhesive resin cements to epoxy resin-based fiber posts after challenging by thermocycling. Thirty-six single-rooted premolars were endodontically treated, and the post-spaces were drilled to receive RelyX Fiber posts #1. Three self-adhesive resin cements (RelyX Unicem, G-Cem, and Breeze) were used for luting fiber posts. The bonded specimens were either stored for 1 month in a moist field (37°C) or submitted to thermocycling (5,000 times) prior to push-out test. The maximum force required to dislodge the post via an apical-coronal direction was recorded (megapascal). The data were statistically analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). The factors "luting cement" and "thermocycling" significantly influenced bond strengths. The initial push-out values of RelyX Unicem and Breeze were higher than those of G-Cem. After thermocycling, the bond strength of G-Cem increased and no differences were found between groups. RelyX Unicem and Breeze bond strengths were not affected by the thermal challenge. Thermal cycling and cement type differently influence the bond strengths of self-adhesive resin cements. Self-adhesive cements can represent an option for luting fiber posts into root canal.

Evaluation of bond strength of self-adhesive cements to dentin with or without application of adhesive systems.

To evaluate the bond strength of indirect restorations to dentin using self-adhesive cements with and without the application of adhesive systems. Seventy-two bovine incisors were used, in which the buccal surfaces were ground down to expose an area of dentin measuring a minimum of 4 x 4 mm. The indirect resin composite Resilab was used to make 72 blocks, which were cemented onto the dentin surface of the teeth and divided into 4 groups (n = 18): group 1: self-adhesive resin cement BiFix SE, applied according to manufacturer's recommendations; group 2: self-adhesive resin cement RelyX Unicem, used according to manufacturer's recommendations; group 3: etch-and-rinse Solobond M adhesive system + BiFix SE; group 4: etch-and-rinse Single Bond 2 adhesive system + RelyX Unicem. The specimens were sectioned into sticks and subjected to microtensile testing in a universal testing machine (EMIC DL- 200 MF). Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 5%). The mean values (± standard deviation) obtained for the groups were: group 1: 15.28 (± 8.17)a, group 2: 14.60 (± 5.21)a, group 3: 39.20 (± 9.98)c, group 4: 27.59 (± 6.57)b. Different letters indicate significant differences (ANOVA; p = 0.0000). The application of adhesive systems before self-adhesive cements significantly increased the bond strength to dentin. In group 2, RelyX Unicem associated with the adhesive system Single Bond 2 showed significantly lower mean tensile bond strengths than group 3 (BiFix SE associated with the etch-and-rinse Solobond M adhesive system).
