Islamic Boarding School Managementto Develop Students' Talents and Interests

This study focuses on examining the implementation of Islamic boarding school management in its efforts to develop the talents and interests of students, both in terms of methods and programs carried out by the Islamic boarding school. The approach to this research is qualitative with a case study type. Data and data sources were obtained from the research subjects, namely the Al-Mukhlisin Islamic Boarding School, Padang Lawas, North Sumatra. Data collection techniques were carried out by in-depth interviews with the leaders of the Islamic boarding school, teachers, and students. Direct observation of daily activities at the Islamic boarding school. And documentation of documents and physical evidence at the location. The method used by the Islamic boarding school as the result of the analysis to determine the talents and interests of students is through daily observation, extracurricular activities, interviews, and discussions, as seen from the involvement of students in external competitions. This method allows the Islamic boarding school to see and improve students' talents according to their skills. The programs show comprehensive and structured management implementation, such as extracurricular activities of Tahfidz Al-Qur'an, calligraphy art, music art and various sports. In addition, this Islamic boarding school also routinely sends its students to participate in multiple national and international competitions, which have resulted in various achievements. These programs not only increase the skills and knowledge of students but also form strong characters and personalities by Islamic values. The Islamic boarding school also provides adequate facilities such as laboratories, art rooms, and fields that support activities as extracurricular activities. This study states that effective and innovative management is the primary key to developing the talents and interests of students. The originality of this Islamic boarding school management development research manages various innovative programs that include academic, religious, art, and sports activities and produces various achievements of students in multiple fields.

Internalisasi Pendidikan Agama Islam dan KeMuhammadiyahan Bagi Santri Muallaf Di Pondok Pesantren Modern Muhammadiyah Boarding School (MBS) Banjarbaru Kalimantan Selatan

This study describes how the process of internalizing Islamic Education and KeMuhammadiyahn valeu for Muslim converts is carried out by the Modern Muhammadiyah Boarding School Boarding School Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. This research also attempts to answer various existing problem formulations, including: (1) What are the efforts of the Banjarbaru MBS to convince converts to enter Islamic boarding schools? (2) How is the internalization of Islamic Religious Education and KeMuhammadiyahan Valeu implemented for Muslim converts at the Banjarbaru MBS? (3) What are the inhibiting and supporting factors in the internalization process? This study also aims to provide an informational description of the process of converting Islamic boarding students to the Modern Muhammadiyah Boarding School Boarding School Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, then an overview of the various activities in the process of internalizing their Islamic religious education and KeMuhammadiyahan valeu as well as the things that become supporting and inhibiting factors in the process. The results of this study are expected to become media of information and study material for the Modern Muhammadiyah Boarding School Boarding School Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan in implementing Islamic education that is relevant for santri converts and as an addition to new scientific treasures for society in general.

Low Dietary Diversity and Low Haemoglobin Status in Ghanaian Female Boarding and Day Senior High School Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Anaemia is one of the most common forms of malnutrition globally, with most anaemia cases related to micronutrient deficiency. Diets with higher dietary diversity scores (DDS) are usually nutritionally diverse and could positively impact micronutrient status, including haemoglobin (Hb) concentration improvement. The study aimed to determine DDS and its association with the Hb concentration of Boarding and Day adolescent Senior High School students in Ghana. Materials and Methods: A semi-structured and three 24 h dietary recalls were used to obtain the participants' demographic and diet intake data, respectively. Hb concentration was assessed using a validated portable haemoglobinometer. DDS was evaluated using the Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) approach. Results: A significant difference in the DDS between Boarding and Day students existed. Only 22% of the Boarding students had adequate dietary diversity, whereas 64% of the Day students had adequate dietary diversity. A significantly smaller proportion of the Boarding students consumed nuts and seeds, dairy, flesh foods, eggs, vitamin A-rich vegetables and fruits, other vegetables, and other fruits compared to Day students (p < 0.05, all). No significant difference (p = 0.925) in mean (±SD) Hb concentrations between Boarding (11.9 ± 1.1 g/dL) and Day (11.9 ± 1.1 g/dL) students was found. Additionally, no significant correlation between mean DDS and Hb concentration (p = 0.997) was recorded. Using Hb < 12 g/dL as the determination of anaemia, 55.1% Boarding and 57.8% Day students had anaemia. Conclusions: Low dietary diversity in Boarding students highlighted inadequate nutrition provided by school meals. Strategies to increase meal diversity should be prioritised by stakeholders in Ghana's educational sector.

Relationship of Attentional Control and Intolerance of Uncertainty with Hoarding Behaviour among University Boarding Students

Background: Hoarding disorder is increasingly recognized as a significant mental health condition characterized by an excessive acquisition and difficulty in discarding possessions. While previous research has identified genetic, environmental, and neurobiological factors contributing to hoarding behaviors, studies in the Pakistani context, particularly among university students, are scarce. This study investigates the role of attentional control and intolerance of uncertainty in relation to hoarding behaviors among university boarding students in Pakistan. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to examine the relationships between hoarding behaviors, attentional control, and intolerance of uncertainty, and to explore the demographic influences on these variables, with a focus on gender differences. Methods: Utilizing a correlational and cross-sectional design, this study recruited a balanced sample of 200 university boarding students (100 males and 100 females) via simple random sampling. The Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS), Attention Control Scale (ATC), and Saving Inventory Scale (SI-R) were employed to measure the respective constructs. Data were collected through paper-based questionnaires, with analysis conducted using SPSS version 25. Statistical methods included descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and t-tests for gender comparison. Results: The results indicated a moderate positive correlation between hoarding behaviors and intolerance of uncertainty (r = .33, p &lt; .01), and a negative correlation between attentional control and intolerance of uncertainty (r = -.19, p &lt; .01). Gender differences were significant, with males exhibiting higher mean scores in hoarding behaviors (M = 45.13, SD = 10.67) compared to females (M = 39.12, SD = 10.38), and similar patterns were observed for other studied variables. Education and socioeconomic status showed no significant effects on the relationships studied. Conclusion: The study underscores the significant impact of intolerance of uncertainty and attentional control on hoarding behaviors among university students in Pakistan, with distinct gender differences suggesting the need for targeted interventions. This research contributes to the understanding of hoarding in a novel cultural context and supports the development of specific therapeutic strategies focusing on cognitive and emotional regulation.

Avenues for Engagement? Testing the Democratic Nature of Library Book Challenge Processes

Background or Context: Public school library book challenges have garnered ample media attention in recent years as many school districts and advocacy organizations have reported record numbers of book challenges. Book challenges are not a new phenomenon, historically speaking, but they have often illuminated values clashes in communities and raise questions about the rights and freedoms of public school students. Judicial rulings and school district policies that address book challenges could provide insights for many members of school communities (including, but not limited to, school board members, students, parents, and teachers) as they experience challenges, but these aspects of the legal record and their influence on responses to book challenges remains underexamined in scholarship. Purpose, Objective, Research Question, or Focus of Study: The 1982 Supreme Court case Island Trees School District v. Pico remains the lasting judicial precedent for interpreting public school students’ First Amendment rights as they interact with school library books. We examine the extent to which school district book challenge policies align with court precedent set in Pico (1982) and the implications for students’ rights and democratic participation during book challenges. Research Design: Drawing on elements of the law and society framework as well as political analysis categories, this study uses qualitative methods to illuminate specific elements of district policies that govern book challenges. Specifically, we examine 29 policies in school districts that experienced a publicly reported book challenge between 2017 and 2021 to understand relationships between school district book challenge policies and the Pico (1982) precedent. Conclusions or Recommendations: Our findings reveal ample space between judicial rulings and school district policies we examine. In fact, we find a broader array of relevant actors in book challenge processes than conceived by the courts and raise implications for students’ constitutional rights and protections related to who policies indicate may or must be involved in these processes, the settings in which book challenge decisions are made, and the limited roles for public involvement during school library book challenges.

CLOTHING CARE AND MAINTENANCE PRACTICES AMONG BOARDING SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ANAMBRA STATE

This study focused on clothing care and maintenance practices of boarding students in Anambra state. Specifically, the study identified various clothing care and maintenance practices among boarding secondary school students in Anambra State. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research. The population comprised 20,114 respondents, multi-stage sampling technique was used to get a sample size of 329 respondents consisting of 298 students (123 male and 175 female students) and 31 teachers (8 house masters, 12 house mistresses and 11 Home Economics teachers). Structured questionnaire which was validated by three experts was used for data collection. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Crombach Alpha which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.87. Data were analysed using mean and standard deviation. A mean of 2.50 was used as a cut off mean. The results of the study revealed that washing clothing items whenever it is dirty, removing stains as soon as it is noticed among others are clothing care and maintenance practices by boarding school students. The study recommended that efforts should be made by teachers and house masters/mistresses to inculcate the skills of proper clothing care and maintenance in boarding students to improve their self-hygiene and this will facilitate their adoption of proper ways of clothing care and maintenance practices.

Perilaku Mental Accounting dalam Mengelola Daily Expenses dari Sisi Gaya Hidup Sehari-Hari Mahasiswa Indekos

Indekos students are an important segment of the academic community who need to support themselves financially. They usually live away from their parents' home and have to organise their own daily lives, including personal financial management. They often face various challenges in managing their finances to meet various needs such as boarding house rent, tuition fees, book fees, transportation costs, as well as non-academic expenses such as food and recreation costs. In this context, mental accounting behaviour is an interesting aspect to study because it can play an important role in the way boarding students manage their daily expenses. This study aims to find out how mental accounting behaviour plays a role in managing daily expenses and what are the factors that influence mental accounting in boarding students. Qualitative research with a phenomenological approach was chosen in this study to explore the phenomenon as a whole. After the research was conducted, it was found that mental accounting has a role in helping students manage their daily expenses. This can be seen from their behaviour of allocating money according to certain account categories such as boarding house rent, daily meals, skincare, transportation, academics and others.

The formation of character that is considered more optimal is the reason for them to make boarding school a second home for their children. The role of dormitory coaches in developing the motivation for boarding students to excel is to understand the character of dormitory students, understand the situation and conditions, get closer, instill moral and moral values, instill responsible character, instill discipline values, describe challenges, instill the value of loving learning, give rewards, give provide guidance, provide support, provide containers, manage schedules, coordinate with other teachers, coordinate with parents, provide attention, boarding students.Familiarize positive things, train the ability of boarding students, give orders to boarding students, give advice, provide solutions, inspire, and generate student confidence. Achievement motivation, and other schools/readers, can make new theories in this study, as reference material to improve the role of coaches/educators in developing student achievement motivation. The aim of this research is to find out the role of dormitory supervisors in encouraging student motivation in helping to improve learning achievement in the dormitory. This research uses interview and observation methods. The results that the author can conclude are that the role of the supervisor is very influential in encouraging students to improve their learning achievement in the dormitory because the dormitory supervisor is the second parent after parents. The dormitory supervisor plays a very important role in encouraging participants to study.

Outbreak of glossitis in a boarding school, diagnostic challenges and the outcome after treatment with Vitamin B Complex tablets: A retrospective descriptive study.

The study aimed to understand the cause of glossitis that occurred among boarding students in a central school in Chhukha, Bhutan, and the outcome after 15 days of treatment with a vitamin B complex tablet. The researcher extracted data from the treatment records of patients treated for glossitis from 30 September 2020 to 30 October 2020 at the boarding school and conducted a retrospective descriptive study. A total of 97 records were used in the study: the age, gender,date of reporting to school, treatment, dietary preferences, and outcome of treatment. In all, 63 (64.9%) patients were females. The students who were staying in the hostel for longer duration were more in proportion among the patients. About 80% of the patients had subjective improvement after treatment with two doses of one tablet of vitamin B complex tablet for 15 days. There were no deaths. The study could not ascertain the definite cause of glossitis among boarding students but 80 % of the patients showed subjective improvement after treatment with daily two doses of 32.5 mg of vitamin B complex tablet. The study recommends a prospective study to understand the cause of glossitis among boarding students to prevent similar future outbreaks.

The effect of spiritual leadership on organizational resilience: Mediated by entrepreneurial innovation

Islamic boarding school research is one of the essential factors in dealing with changing times. This problem is caused by the existence of management in Islamic boarding schools, which tends to be traditional and monotonous in religious-centric texts, without regard to aspects of adaptive conceptual and technical abilities. This study aims to reveal the role of spiritual leadership and entrepreneurial innovation in building organizational resilience. In addition, this study also highlights the role of entrepreneurial innovation as a mediating variable. A total of 130 participants were involved in this study, including leaders of Islamic boarding schools, teachers, students, and parents. After distributing 130 questionnaires to the participants, we analyzed them using the Partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method. Unlike the hypothesis, this study found no significant relationship between spiritual leadership and resilience in Islamic boarding schools. However, spiritual leadership influences entrepreneurial innovation (Yang et al., 2021). Entrepreneurial innovation encourages organizational resilience (YahiaMarzouk &amp; Jin, 2022). In addition, entrepreneurial innovation perfectly mediates the effect of spiritual leadership on resilience in Islamic boarding schools.

The journal celebrated its 50th anniversary this year and we held a special event with Elders, community members, editorial board members, staff and students from a number of universities. We also welcomed a new editorial board to AJIE this year and we thank them for their service to the journal.

Association between ability tracking and student’s academic and non-academic outcomes: Empirical evidence from junior high schools in rural China

Ability tracking, a practice of grouping students into different classrooms based on their test scores, is prevalent in schools around the world. However, evidence on the effects of ability tracking on students’ learning outcomes remains mixed. Drawing on a longitudinal dataset of 9170 students across 119 rural junior high schools from 23 counties in two provinces of China, this paper examines how ability tracking affects students' math score, math academic self-concept, and math anxiety. We find that ability tracking had no statistically significant effect on either students’ academic or non-academic outcomes. Sub-group analyses by high and low-ability classrooms revealed similar results for math scores and math self-concept. However, ability tracking helped reduce the math anxiety of high-ability classroom students as they experienced a lower value added in their anxiety score by 0.103 SD (p < 0.05) relative to students in schools that do not practice ability tracking. Furthermore, heterogeneous analyses revealed that ability tracking is associated with a lower value added in math score of low-ability boarding students by 0.168 SD (p < 0.05) relative to non-boarding students in comparison schools.

Strategi Preventif Penggunaan NAPZA Berbasis Pemberdayaan (Studi Kasus Pondok Pesantren Al-Isti'anah Kabupaten Pati)

The use of Narcotics, Alcohol, Psychotropic Substances, and Other Addictive Substances (NAPZA) has become a serious problem in various segments of society, including among students in Islamic boarding schools. This research aims to develop and analyze empowerment-based prevention strategies for NAPZA use at the Al-Isti'anah Boarding School in Pati Regency. The study adopts a qualitative approach with a case study research design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the leaders of the boarding school, teachers, and students. Additionally, participatory observation and document analysis were conducted to obtain a comprehensive overview of the context and dynamics within the boarding school. The results of the research indicate that Al-Isti'anah Boarding School has implemented various empowerment-based prevention strategies for NAPZA use. These strategies include the establishment of educational programs on the dangers of NAPZA, the development of social skills, the cultivation of religious and moral values, and the creation of an environment that supports and reinforces healthy lifestyle choices. Empowerment is achieved by actively involving all stakeholders, including leaders, teachers, students, and families. Various activities such as archery, wood carving, local food cultivation, and graphic design of calligraphy are conducted to divert specific concentrations on the negative impacts of NAPZA use.

Interpersonal Communication in the Character Building of Students in Islamic Boarding Schools

Islamic boarding schools are Islamic institutions that help and develop students from a religious perspective which includes character formation. One of the success factors in forming the character of students in Islamic boarding schools is the role of a teacher. A teacher must be able to communicate well with students by prioritizing student discipline and politeness. One of the communications carried out in developing students is interpersonal communication. This research aims to find out how teachers' interpersonal communication approaches and strategies shape the character of Islamic boarding school students in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study type. Data sources were taken from ten informants through direct interviews using a set of interview protocols. The informants consisted of teachers at Islamic boarding schools and students. All interview data obtained was analyzed thematically using the Milles &amp; Hubberman Interactive Analysis Model technique. Research findings found three identification approaches and two interpersonal communication strategies used by teachers in forming students' characters. The three identification approaches are the cultural approach, the sociological approach, and the psychological approach. The two strategies used by the teacher are punishment and catalyst strategies. This research has revealed teachers' interpersonal communication approaches and strategies in shaping the character of Islamic boarding school students in Indonesia. Apart from that, the results of this research can be used as a reference for anyone who wants to manage an educational institution in the form of an Islamic boarding school.

Effect of Inhibitory Modelling Technique in modification of bullying behavior among secondary school boarding students

This study investigated the effect of inhibitory modelling technique (IMT) in modification of bullying behavior among senior secondary school boarding students in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The pre-/post-test quasi experimental control group design was adopted. The entire senior secondary two boarding students in Zaria constituted the population for the study. The sample for the study was 282 (172 males and 110 females) students drawn from three boarding secondary schools. Two intact classes in each of the three schools were used. The treatment package for the experimental group was IMT. To establish the relative effect of the treatment in modifying bullying behavior, both experimental and control group were pre- and post-tested using research instrument titled involvement and attitude bullying rating scale. The instrument was validated and have the reliability coefficient of 0.87. Four hypotheses were formulated and were tested using t-test at the α=0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that IMT emerged superior to traditional school counselling technique for modifying attitude to, and involvement in bullying among secondary school boarding students. IMT was also found to be effective for modifying both male and female participants’ attitude to, and involvement in bullying. It was recommended among other that school counsellors should adopt IMT as an anti-bullying intervention for counselling secondary school students against bullying as well as for prevention or modification of bullying behavior in boarding schools.

Sistem Pendidikan Karakter Sosial Santri Ditinjau dari Perspektif Perilaku Manusia dalam Organisasi

This study investigates the Social Character Education System at Pondok Pesantren Al-Qohhariyyah in Pacet, Cianjur Regency. The research method employed is qualitative descriptive, involving key informants such as the head of Madrasah Aliyah, the council of teachers, the head of the male boarding school, administrators, and students. Data was gathered through observation, interviews, and document analysis, utilizing triangulation. Findings indicate that the pesantren combines tradition and modern approaches in social character education. There are two main models: the Salafi pesantren, which maintains the teaching of classical texts, and the Khalafi pesantren, which incorporates general education into the madrasah curriculum. Character education is delivered through various methods like sorogan, wetonan, bandongan, and mudzakarah. Majelis ta'lim also engages the local community in religious education. This system positively impacts the formation of students' social character by integrating traditional and modern values, creating a dynamic and creative learning environment.

Analisis Penerapan Penggunaan Mufradat dalam Komunikasi Bahasa Arab di Pondok Pesantren Islamic Center eLKISI Mojokerto

Mufradat has an important role in communication skills. This research is motivated by the difficulties of Arabic language boarding students at the Mojokerto eLKISI Islamic Center Islamic Boarding School in applying mufradat when communicating. The purpose of this study was to find out the application of mufradat for female students in Arabic dormitories communication, to examine the difficulties of students in applying mufradat when communicating in Arabic, and alternative solutions to these problems. This type of research is a descriptive-qualitative study with research subjects being female students of the Arabic boarding school, Mudabbir, and Ismul Lughah. Research data was collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that some students still use Indonesian and do not apply mufradat in communication. There are two linguistic difficulties and four non-linguistic difficulties. Two linguistic difficulties are in the form of a lack of mastery of grammar and knowledge of grammar. Four non-linguistic difficulties in the form of a less supportive social environment in the dormitory, different class backgrounds, limited time for students' activities in the dormitory, and the emergence of a sense of shame and fear of being wrong. The solution to this problem is implementing a mandatory language program for all students, maximizing the role of Mudabbir as a facilitator and linguistic role model, and implementing a reward and punishment system.
