Doubling the Graduation Rate for Black Men: The Fortified Classroom

Increasing the collegiate success rates of men of color is an important goal, as it provides for the economic empowerment of this population and supports social justice and equity. While some interventions have been found to be impactful for men of color, the current study was designed to assess the bicultural education model and an innovative program called the fortified classroom. The bicultural education model suggests that students of color simultaneously commit to both Black and mainstream cultures and step in and out of the repertoires of both. The fortified classroom is an immersive first-year experience that includes academic support that is built into the classrooms. Results suggest that supporting students through this program has a significant positive impact on course completion, term-to-term retention, and graduation rates.

Beyond Lip Service: Decolonizing Children's Literature for Promoting Racial Pride, Equity, Achievement, and Liberation (REAL)

Children in P-12 schools are growing up in racially tumultuous times, despite the promises of desegregation since Brown vs. Board of Education. Multicultural education, included under the umbrella of equity, diversity, and inclusion, is under attack and illegal in an increasing number of school districts. Advanced placement in Black history and psychology courses and the use of diverse literature written for children and young adults have been banned by many school districts nationally. Educators are being threatened, sanctioned, reprimanded, and fired. Despite this, some teachers stand steadfast in their commitment to pedagogies that use authentic, high-quality literature about and by minoritized scholars. In this publication, I discuss the importance of gifted and talented education (GATE) students being taught Black history and culture that centers diverse literature that recognizes, respects, and celebrates similarities and differences within and across cultures including ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, physical, cognitive and emotional ability, geographic location, language, and religion. Many GATE students are avid readers and like other students, they benefit from an education that includes diverse literature. Further, I use Racial Pride, Equity, Achievement, and Liberation (REAL) to underscore the monumental need for multicultural literature due to its multitude of benefits to Black and other minoritized students. In other words, children's literature can and must be decolonized, which is supported by Bishop’s metaphor of “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors.”

Inclusive practice: a study exploring community pharmacists' perspectives, knowledge, and training of Neurodiversity (ND) and the effects on their practice

Abstract Introduction An estimated 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent, a term encompassing conditions such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other learning differences.1 Neurodivergent individuals have poorer health outcomes, increased risk of premature mortality and reduced access to healthcare.2 The Oliver McGowan case highlighted the need for raising awareness of neurodiversity and mandatory training.2 CPs are uniquely positioned to implement simple adjustments, e.g., adapting communication methods and inclusive pharmacy spaces, consequently reducing health inequalities. CPs’ knowledge, cultural perspectives and current accommodations in their practice for neurodiverse patients must be determined. Aim To explore community pharmacists' perspectives, knowledge and training of neurodiversity and the effects on their practice. Methods A mixed-methods approach was used following ethical approval from Kingston University Ethics Committee. After a pilot study, using random sampling, paper questionnaires comprising 26 mixed-style questions were distributed and collected in person to community pharmacists in East London boroughs within a two-month period. Survey participants were invited for an optional in-person or remote semi-structured interview, conducted using a validated interview guide. The minimum sample size was 129 pharmacists (Raosoft online calculator; 95% confidence interval). Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, using Microsoft Excel alongside thematic analysis for interview responses. Results Response rate was 80% (n=103/129) and 6 pharmacists participated in interviews. 53% (n=55) were Asian, 21% (n=22) Black, and 19% (n=20) White ethnicity. 52% (n=54) identified as male and 47% (n=48) as female. There was a statistically significant correlation between ethnicity and perception of neurodiversity, with conditions taken less seriously in Asian and Black cultures compared to White culture (p<0.001). White participants were statistically more likely to rate their knowledge as good or above in comparison to Asian or Black participants (p=0.01), with 70% (n=14/20) White participants rating their knowledge as good in comparison to 18% (n=4/22) Black and 29% (n=16/55) Asian participants. 100% (n=103/103) and 94% (n=97/103) participants were able to identify autism and ADHD respectively as neurodiverse conditions but only 20% (n=21/103) and 21% (n=22/103) respectively identified dyspraxia and dyscalculia. 94% (n=97/103) stated no changes were made to accommodate neurodiverse patients with only 3% (n=3/103) offering large-print labels or poster formats and 2% (n=2/103) offering quiet areas. Thematic analysis demonstrated the absence of interventions and awareness was commonly due to systemic barriers and lack of specific training. Participants described diverse cultural attitudes and attached stigma to neurodiversity. Discussion/Conclusion There are significant gaps in knowledge about neurodiversity, possibly linked to a lack of formal training opportunities for CPs. Consequently, minimal adjustments are made to accommodate neurodiverse patients. Changes to pharmacy education and training are needed to develop general understanding, with tools that can be incorporated in pharmacies to aid neurodiverse patients and improve health literacy.2 Simple measures such as ‘quiet hours’ or large-text labels can greatly impact a person’s healthcare experience. However, improvements are required in infrastructure and resources within pharmacies, as well as shifts in cultural attitudes to encourage patients to share their status.3 Study limitations included time constraints and a small but diverse geographical area.

Governance of the Black Experience on Reddit: r/BlackPeopleTwitter as a Case Study in Supporting Sense of Virtual Community for Black Users

Despite frequent efforts to combat racism, almost no research has explored how to cultivate positive experiences of thriving Black culture on Reddit. In this case study, we surveyed users of r/BlackPeopleTwitter (BPT)--a large, popular subreddit that showcases screenshots of hilarious or insightful social media posts made by Black people (mainly from Black Twitter). Our research questions seek to understand users' motivations for visiting BPT, how they experience a sense of virtual community (SOVC) and membership in BPT, and how BPT's governance influences these experiences. We find that that users come to BPT primarily for excellent humor and entertainment, sociopolitical context on issues relevant to Black people, and/or partaking in the shared Black experience. Black users are more likely to report higher SOVC and to identify as members, whereas non-Black users are more likely to identify as guests or visitors to the community. To protect Black expression, the BPT moderation team implemented a governance strategy for verifying racial identity and limiting participation to only verified users in certain threads. Our data suggest that this policy is a contentious but influential aspect of SOVC that simultaneously constructs and challenges the sense of the subreddit existing as a safe space for Black people. We synthesize these results by discussing how: differing platform affordances across Twitter and Reddit combine to cultivate a thriving Black community on Reddit; the need for Black authenticity on an otherwise anonymous platform can guide future research in identity verification; and the limitations of this study motivate future work to support all marginalized communities online.

THE SOCIOGENESIS OF RACISM AND ETHNIC-RACIAL RELATIONS IN SCHOOL: A CRITICAL VIEW

This study addresses the sociogenesis of racism in Brazil, examining its manifestation in the school environment and the challenges of developing pedagogical practices capable of mitigating this exclusionary culture and its violence. Based on a current, historical, and theoretical contextualization, the study seeks to investigate how racism manifests itself in education and what its consequences are in everyday school life, analyzing how prejudice, discrimination, and the devaluation of black and indigenous cultures and subjectivities impact students' learning processes. It is concluded that racism is prominent in Brazilian society and its consequences affect education, with impacts on school dropout rates, student performance, and social inclusion.

Close Encounters of the Archival Kind: Affect and Transnational Solidarities in African Diaspora Archives

Recent explorations of affect in the archives have focused on the experiences of users and particularly the distress archival collections could possibly cause them. Perhaps because they have, until recently, been trained to think of themselves as engaged in objective and neutral work collecting and preserving memory, archivists rarely reflect on or talk about their work, how they engage with the materials they manage, and how they personally feel about what they encounter in the course of their professional lives. Using an autoethnographic conceptual framing, this article uses four archival encounters in the Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books Division of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture to reflect on affect in the archives invoked by archival work. Through these encounters, the article seeks to demonstrate archives of the African diaspora as both a locus of transnational African diasporic identities and solidarities, as well as a critical site for the (re)building of the same. Finally, it also hints at how such affective experiences can, in fact, further the cultural and political work of Black archivists and archives.

Escrevivência as a Theory of Diasporic Narrative Heritage

Abstract This article studies a theoretical term for diasporic cultural production proposed by the contemporary Black Brazilian writer Conceição Evaristo—escrevivência. Evaristo’s first novel, Becos da Memória ([2006] 2017)—semiautobiographical remembrances of a midcentury favela community during its eviction—exemplifies escrevivência as a theory of the transmission of a culture of resistance to imposed dispossession. The term has been cited in a proliferation of antiracist critiques and studies on marginal subjects in Brazil. My argument is that escrevivência is crucial for Brazilian decolonial thought, given the temporally recursive frame it enunciates, which opens the present and future to prior articulations of Black culture in Brazil. I make three approaches to Becos within escrevivência’s temporal frame, examining literary anteriority (the influence of Carolina Maria de Jesus’s works), narrated marginality (polyphony, embodiment, domestic labor, minor literature), and cultural heritage (the instantiation and circulation of Black language).

THE TYBEE ISLAND, GEORGIA BLACK HISTORY TRAIL: A COMMUNITY APPROACH to BLACK GEOGRAPHIES

ABSTRACT Tybee Island, Georgia, was a colonial borderland between Spanish and British America before evolving into a middle-class, seaside resort in the 1800s. It continued as a popular vacation spot in the twentieth century. However, research has highlighted the island’s troubling history of racial segregation, particularly surrounding events like the Orange Crush Beach Party. Previous studies also underscored the Historical Society ignoring the island’s Black history in its exhibits. Building on this, a collaborative project emerged in 2021 involving a Georgia Southern University faculty member and undergraduate student, Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization, and Tybee Island Historical Society. The goal was to create a Black History Trail highlighting a rich yet ignored Black history and culture on the island and addressing the exclusion of Tybee’s Black population from museums and markers. This project integrates community geography, focusing on resolving problems like social exclusion, and exploring spatialities of Black life, social oppressions, and resistance. Utilizing archival research, oral history interviews, and ArcGIS, the project developed a 13-stop virtual tour using ESRI Story Maps. We conclude our paper by highlighting the lessons learned during the trail’s development, the multitude of ways the trail embodies the theory of Black geographies in practice, and the broader challenges in honoring Tybee’s Black geographies. A Critical Analysis of Cremation Burials Within Some of the South African Tribes: A Contextual Practical Theological View

The colonial erosion of African traditional and cultural practices continues to dislocate the African identity in different ways. The changes and shifts made to burial practices have simply paved a way for the colonial agenda to bring about more Western ways of doing things, burial rites included. It is important to note that cremation, as another way of burying the dead, is slowly becoming a norm for black people. This paper intends to not only unveil the causes and contestations around cremation burials, but to also seek an African theological response as a way to guide black African culture moving forward.

The Relationship Between Racial Attitudes and Disordered Eating Behaviors in Black Men and Black Women.

Black individuals remain underrepresented in disordered eating research, despite evidence that both Black men and women present with disordered eating behaviors. Culturally-informed theoretical frameworks suggest that these behaviors may be linked to race-related sociocultural experiences, such as aspects of racial identity. While studies have focused on racial identity commitment, the association between attitudes toward one's racial identity and disordered eating remains underexplored. The present study examines whether positive attitudes toward one's Blackness and Black culture are associated with disordered eating. In a cross-sectional online sample of Black men and women (N = 458), we measured self-reported attitudes toward Blackness (i.e., centrality and private regard) and disordered eating behaviors (i.e., purging, binge eating, excessive exercise, and drive for thinness). In pre-registered linear regression models, private regard was negatively associated with purging and binge eating. Across all models, centrality was not associated with disordered eating. On average, Black women reported greater drive for thinness whereas Black men reported higher excessive exercise scores. This is the first study to demonstrate associations between racial attitudes and disordered eating among Black men and women. Our findings affirm unique correlates of disordered eating among Black people and suggest that positive attitudes toward one's Blackness and Black culture may be a protective factor against the development of disordered eating.

The Black Gay Male Image under Siege

This essay discusses Isaac Julien's film Looking for Langston alongside 1980s Black British political culture, in which visual culture played a significant part. Focusing on the role of the image in that time and place, the article reads the embodied performances of waiting, use of the montage, and constructed scenes of Black queer lifeworlds, past and present, as challenging the linear modes of temporality that have confined Black politics to a perpetual state of deferment and the modern notion of vision under which the Black gay male image remains under siege.

Mending the Red-Black Thread: Marxism, the Black Radical Tradition, and the Robinson Thesis

Cedric Robinson's increasingly popular and influential work Black Marxism is best understood as a project of post-Marxist critique. Robinson's book, now regarded as a classic, asks a series of important questions of Marxism, but each of its major arguments marks a fundamental departure from the theoretical perspectives of both European and Black Marxists. The book exists in a historical moment of crisis for the left and intellectual retreat from Marxism; Robinson's relationship with Marxism and his place in the political tradition to which he gave a name, the Black Radical Tradition, suggests three main arguments. First, Robinson's critiques of the classical Marxist tradition — focused on its apparent economism and Eurocentrism — are based on a flattening of this tradition and a marked break from Marxist methodology. Second, Robinson's critique does not neatly align with the perspectives of the radical Black intellectuals whom he discusses, and indeed his conclusions are frequently in conflict with them. Third, the emancipatory project of Black Studies and the research programs convened under Robinson's influence will be best served by cautious and critical engagements with Robinson's seminal work. The generative questions that Robinson asks will be better answered through a materialist account of Black history, a syncretic understanding of Black culture, and a nonreductive, revolutionary Marxism providing the guide for political action.

Snowboarding while Black: race, aesthetics, and Jamaican migrant workers

ABSTRACT How snowboarding intersects with race in a Canadian mountain resort is explored in this research note. Snowboarding is now globalised but emerged in the USA in the 1960s as an alternative lifestyle sport. Race was embedded in its birth as then, as now, snowboarding is dominated by privileged White participants who are mostly male. The White dominance is masked as whiteness is invisibilized by claims of being neutral or colour-blind. Yet, a Black presence surrounds snowboarding. The second theme examines snowboarding’s commodification of Black aesthetics. It uses Black music and urban fashion to enhance and market its supposedly radical or coolness credentials to its suburban White audience. The mining of Black aesthetics is unacknowledged and thus whitewashes the economic exploitation of Black culture. Migrant workers are the backbone of snow resorts, and the third theme examines this use of transnational labour. It probes why Australians are the visible workers on the snow-kissed slopes and front desks, while Jamaicans are the invisible labour in catering and housekeeping. The use of migrant labour is racialised and further reifies the whiteness of snowboarding. Black snowboarders, riding the snowy slopes for leisure, expose and disrupt the politics of race and place in snowboarding.

The immovable veil of black disability: an introduction to Black disability threat theory and its application to the school to prison nexus

ABSTRACT I propose a new theoretical framework that incorporates an intersecting analysis of Blackness and disability: Black disability threat theory. A major contribution of this theory is the notion that being visibly Black and visibly disabled causes moral panic to disabled and nondisabled populations belonging to any racial group including non-disabled Black American persons and disabled White American persons. Additionally, a broader category of intersectional theories has been applied and leveraged to learn more about inequities and how we might resolve them. Being obviously Black and obviously disabled excludes one from belonging to and fully participating in either the disability culture or the Black culture as we are accepted by neither. In society (and schools), these persons – those who wear a veil of both Blackness and disability – are categorized, considered, and treated as the most dangerous of all which typically results in negative life outcomes.

Where are all the Black girls on TikTok?: Exploring in-group community and (in)visibility through #BlackGirlTikTok

Since the global virality of the ‘Renegade’ dance on TikTok and beyond in 2020, concerns regarding the erasure of Black girls have been noted. This paper extends the conversation by considering how Black girls and teenagers may continue to wrestle with visibility and suppression even within a more intimate in-group community of Black TikTokers. In this paper, we assemble an original corpus of TikTok posts purposively sampled from #BlackGirlTikTok and apply content analysis guided by critical technocultural discourse analysis. Our findings reveal that the dominant discourse on #BlackGirlTikTok focused on embodied self-care (i.e. body and beauty care, health and wellness) and Black popular culture (i.e. audio memes, parlance), constituting a niche community for users to commune. However, despite the nomenclature of the hashtag, the users dominating the community were overtly Black women rather than Black girls or teenagers, thus raising issues of visibility, competition, and suppression within the in-group community.

Pioneers and Populists: Sutton E. Griggs, Oscar Micheaux, and Independent Black Publishing at the Turn of the Century

Abstract: Recent scholarship on Black print cultures has paid close attention to self- and independent publication. These studies tend to center writer-publishers from the antebellum and Harlem Renaissance periods, arguing that Black authors published their works out of either financial necessity or desire for editorial independence. However, the causes and meanings of Black independent publishing changed during the postbellum, pre-Renaissance period. In this essay, I focus on Sutton E. Griggs and Oscar Micheaux, two early twentieth-century novelists who labored outside of and in opposition to both the Black press and white, mainstream publishers. Ultimately, I argue that Griggs's and Micheaux's use of commission presses carved new paths for Black writers to dissent against emerging trends in political and literary culture: US expansionism and the early corporatization of literary publishing. This essay urges scholars to treat turn-of-the-century commission presses as neglected archives of radical texts.

Ungraspable: Black life in Juan Cárdenas’s novels

ABSTRACT This article focuses on the representation of Blackness in the fiction of Colombian author Juan Cárdenas, particularly emphasising the novels The Strata and Shadow Elastic. It explores the challenges faced by Cárdenas when integrating Black characters into narratives narrated by white male protagonists. The novels question the perspective of the male narrator, which often extends beyond the confines of European rationality. As a result, the act of portraying Black life becomes intricate when a character’s lived experience exceeds that of the narrator, prompting a reconsideration of the storytelling itself. The concept of the ‘shadow archive’, inspired by Tavia Nyong’o, plays a central role in Cárdenas’s vision of Black life. This archive serves as a repository of memory and self-representation, defying conventional narratives by recovering stories suppressed or disregarded by the white world. Cárdenas employs the notion of ‘afro-fabulation’, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction and delving into the possibilities of what could have occurred by incorporating everyday, fantastic, and mythical elements. Through their elusive narratives, the novels disrupt hegemonic culture, challenge biased knowledge, and establish connections within Black cultures.

Power Dynamics and Cultural Clashes in Doris Lessing’s The Grass Is Singing: Decolonising the Discourse of Differences

This paper examines the power dynamics and cultural clashes in Doris Lessing’s The Grass Is Singing, focusing on the interactions between the white protagonist, Mary Turner, and her black servants Samson and Moses, as well as a white servant Tony. Set in colonial Southern Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe), the novel portrays the pervasive racism and superiority complex of the white colonialists. Mary’s negative perceptions of black culture highlight the colonialists’ failure to appreciate indigenous traditions, reinforcing unequal power structures. Drawing attention to theoretical frameworks such as Franz Fanon’s concept of anti-racism and Ngugi wa Thiang’o’s theory of decolonisation, this paper examines Moses’s resistance to oppression and his quest for decolonisation as manifestations of individual agency within imperialism. Moses’ journey toward decolonisation symbolises a broader struggle for psychological, cultural, and economic liberation from colonial oppression. This analysis underscores the complexities of authority and resistance, illustrating how Mary’s attitudes inadvertently trigger Moses’s decolonisation process. This paper contributes to a deeper understanding of Lessing’s exploration of colonial authority, cultural differences, and the necessity of decolonisation.

Racism Learnt and Unlearnt

For centuries, Africans migrated to India in different phases resulting in a significant presence of the African diaspora in this country. The term “African diaspora” gained currency only in the mid-nineteenth century in connection with the study of the people of African origin dispersed all over the world. But in countries like India, the African presence dates as far back as the period of the Indian Ocean slave trade. Historically, India and Africa have shared cordial political and economic relations. Their shared history of anti-colonial struggle, the mutual reverence for political leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, and India’s support for postapartheid South Africa might indicate the peaceful coexistence of Indians and Africans in present-day India. But the on the ground reality hits differently, as depicted in “The Shade of You” by Anushree Majumdar, published in Eleven Ways to Love: Essays by Penguin India. Majumdar thinks herself a modern and enlightened woman until she gets into a relationship with Bryan Ochieng, a Kenyan studying in Delhi. As she gradually explores her relationship with Bryan, she comes to know about different aspects of racism that the African diaspora faces in Delhi in a more intimate way. Getting mocked and ridiculed for dating a black man in the public space makes her critique the racist attitude of her fellow Delhiites. She realizes that Indians have deeply internalized the colonial legacy of racism and colorism. She understands that, since our very childhood, we embrace a culture informed by racist ideology unconsciously. Indians are satisfied with the tokenist acceptance of black culture by celebrating black footballers and pop artists, but they would never let African diasporic people come closer as family and friends. This mindset has sufficiently exoticized and otherized Africans in India. Her proximity to Bryan reveals to her how ignorant she has been about Bryan’s culture despite her love of selective parts of Kenyan culture. The presence of Bryan and his Kenyan friends in her life offers her moments of self-reflexivity. She comes to question how much she has been able to unlearn her racial prejudices, and the answer forces her to confront an aspect of her race–intolerant subjectivity so far buried under her conscious race-sensitive self. Her self-realization makes her feel uncomfortable and apologetic. She feels that the self-realization that has dawned upon her is not enough to help her in the unlearning process overnight. She fails to maintain a long-term relationship with Bryan given their seemingly unbridgeable cultural gap at that point in time. But Bryan’s entry into her life marks the beginning of her anti-racism journey in the true sense of the term and it continues. Years later, she finds that she has become a better version of herself who is no longer troubled by the hidden guilt and shame associated with her relationship with an African.

They feelin’ some type of way: antiblackness, speaking black flesh and the problem of interracial allyship

Competitive policy debate, an activity touted to train political leaders and civic participants, is mired in conflict over the rise of Black student participation. Diversity outreach efforts in the 1990s offered an opportunity to increase black participation significantly in the activity. These efforts at inclusion generated racial turbulence as Black students brought black theory, performance and culture to the fore as the grounding for their argumentative strategies. While the scholarship about Black activism in policy debate has focused on the reaction of the traditionalists attempting to protect the norms of competition, it is simultaneously salient to analyze white liberal and progressive responses to the disruption caused by Black debaters. Drawing on the themes of civility and mutual recognition, I encourage argument theorists to consider how the structure of anti-blackness offers a fundamental antagonism to interracial debate and deliberation. This article delves into a racialized conflict between two teams who were part of a broad-based coalition of debaters disrupting normative argumentative and performative practice in debate competitions, arguing that violating the norms of competition and standards of civility represents a necessary strategy for Black folks arguing about anti-black racism in the interracial context of competitive debate.
