Injury Risk and Prevention Strategies Among Saudi and Irish Amateur Women Soccer Players – A qualitative study

Abstract This qualitative study aimed to explore how Saudi and Irish women amateur soccer players perceive soccer-related injury risk and prevention, including barriers and facilitators to the implementation of prevention strategies. Online interviews were conducted with 36 amateur women soccer players (20 Saudi and 16 Irish) of 18 years and older. Findings were analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Three main themes were identified; (1) “we don’t have enough knowledge about injury prevention” (2) implementing injury prevention measures varies across players and teams, and (3) “we love the game…but we are undervalued”. The biopsychosocial characteristics of the players influenced their experiences on injury prevention in all three themes. Tailored educational programmes for women, their coaches, and parents of younger players, as well as provision of the required support for amateur teams are recommended to encourage participation and implementation of evidence-based injury prevention strategies, taking player’s biopsychosocial characteristics into account.

Gender differences in gastrointestinal, biopsychosocial and healthcare-seeking behaviors in Chinese patients with irritable bowel syndrome predominant with diarrhea

BackgroundEvidences of comparison of sex difference in Chinese irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients were few. We aim to compare gender difference in the biopsychosocial characteristics of Chinese patients of IBS predominant with diarrhea (IBS-D).MethodsIBS-D patients meeting Rome III criteria were enrolled. We administered IBS symptom questionnaires, evaluation of psychological status (HAMD and HAMA scales) and IBS quality of life (IBS-QOL), dietary habits, healthcare seeking behaviors, and compared biopsychosocial characteristics between male and female patients.ResultsFour hundred and ninety patients were enrolled including 299 males and 191 females. More female patients reported abdominal pain associated with defecation (84.3% vs. 74.9%, P = 0.014) while males reported more abdominal discomfort (39.8% vs. 26.7%, P = 0.003). Females had higher IBS symptom score (9.7 ± 1.7 vs. 9.4 ± 1.4, P = 0.025) and more of females had severe abdominal pain/discomfort (17.8% vs. 12.4%, P = 0.013) while there were no significant differences of other bowel symptoms. Females reported higher incidence of comorbid anxiety state (64.9% vs. 52.8%, P = 0.008) and depression state (35.6% vs. 19.7%, P < 0.001) than males. Female patients also had lower IBS-QOL score (70.2 ± 20.4 vs. 75.1 ± 16.8, P = 0.028) and more frequent consultations, as well as less response for dietary modification than males.ConclusionsChinese female patients with IBS-D had more prominent psychosocial disorders compared to male patients and their abdominal symptoms had minor differences.

A secondary analysis: the impact of pre-existing chronic pain among patients with cancer presenting to the emergency department with acute pain.

Patients with cancer may experience pain from cancer itself or its treatment. Additionally, chronic pain (CP) predating a patient's cancer diagnosis may make the etiology of pain less clear and the management of pain more complex. In this brief report, we investigated differences in biopsychosocial characteristics, pain severity, and opioid consumption, comparing groups of cancer patients with and without a history of CP who presented to the emergency department (ED) with a complaint of cancer-related pain. This secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study included patients with cancer who presented to the ED with a complaint of pain (≥ 4/10). Sociodemographic, clinical, psychological, and pain characteristics were assessed in the ED and subsequent hospitalization. Mann-Whitney U-, T-, and Chi-square tests were used to compare differences between patients with and without pre-existing CP before cancer. Patients with pre-existing CP had lower income (p = 0.21) and less formal education (p = 0.25) and were more likely to have a diagnosis of depression or substance use disorder (p < 0.01). Patients with pre-existing CP reported significantly greater pain severity in the ED and during hospitalization compared to those without pre-existing CP (p < 0.05), despite receiving greater amounts of opioid analgesics (p = 0.036). Identifying a history of pre-existing CP during intake may help identify patients with cancer with difficult to manage pain, who may particularly benefit from multimodal interventions and supportive care. In addition, referral of these patients for themanagement of co-occurring pain disorders may help decrease the usage of the ED for undertreated pain.

Returning to work after dysvascular lower limb amputation-A novel multivariate approach to examine relative contributions of biopsychosocial predictors.

Returning to work is a key outcome of rehabilitation and social re-integration after lower limb amputation. It is important to understand what biopsychosocial factors contribute to returning to work after dysvascular amputation. Examining relative contributions of functional and contextual predictors of returning to work in participants with lower limb amputation due to diabetes and other dysvascular diseases. Cross-sectional. Return-to-work outcome, biopsychosocial characteristics including physical functioning, self-efficacy & perceived ability, and socioeconomical support data were collected from a purposive sample (n = 57) in a multi-state collaborative research network. Grouped Weighted Quantile Sum model analysis was conducted to evaluate relative contributions of biopsychosocial predictors. Less than 30% of the participants returned to work after their amputation. Physical functioning (odds ratio = 10.19; 95% CI 2.46-72.74) was the most important predictor group. Working before amputation, prosthetic mobility, and access to rehabilitation care were also identified as key factors associated with returning to work. Fewer than 1 in 3 participants with dysvascular amputation returned to work, despite an average age of only 54 years at the time of amputation. Physical functioning was shown to be the most important predictor, while socioeconomic factors such as a lack of access to care also contribute to not returning to work after dysvascular amputation.

Biopsychosocial Profile of COVID-19 Patients Cared for in Public and Private Health Facilities in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan

Background. Over the past two years, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a staggering number of biopsychosocial deficits in the general population that have impacted the physical, psychological, and social aspects of their health and well-being. Objectives. This paper highlights the biopsychosocial characteristics of COVID-19 patients cared for in public and private health facilities in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Methods. A cross-sectional study was performed using telephone interviews of patients tested positive for COVID-19 between March 2020 and March 2021. The Pashto version of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) was administrated to all patients. Independent t -test and ANOVA analyses were used to assess the effects of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics on DASS-21 total scores and on each subscale separately. Results. Of all 477 participants, the vast majority (95%) had characteristic symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, sore throat, cough, and headache. Of all participants, 472 (99%) had symptoms of anxiety, 462 (96.9%) had depression, and 463 (97.1%) had stress. Patients who scored significantly higher on the DASS-21 scale were more likely to have female sex, old age, low level of education, spouse separation, comorbid medical conditions, and being admitted to intensive care units. Conclusion. This study confirmed the previously described epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with severe COVID-19. The results indicated a high burden of mental health problems in severe COVID-19 patients. Hence, we recommend that policymakers in Afghanistan take proper measures for the timely provision of efficient and quality mental health services during every disaster and postdisaster era.

Characterizing Extreme Phenotypes for Perceived Improvement From Treatment in Persons With Chronic Pain Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A NIDILRR and VA TBI Model Systems Collaborative Project.

To define and characterize extreme phenotypes based on perceived improvement in pain for persons with chronic pain following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Eighteen Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) Centers. A total of 1762 TBIMS participants 1 to 30 years post-injury reporting chronic pain at their most recent follow-up interview. The Patient's Global Impression of Change (PGIC) related to pain treatment. Sociodemographic, injury, functional outcome, pain, and pain treatment characteristics. Participants were mostly male (73%), White (75%), middle-aged (mean 46 years), injured in motor vehicle accidents (53%), or falls (20%). Extreme phenotypes were created for an extreme improvement phenotype ( n = 512, 29.8%) defined as "moderately better" or above on the PGIC and an extreme no-change group ( n = 290, 16.9%) defined as no change or worse. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression combined with logistic regression identified multivariable predictors of improvement versus no-change extreme phenotypes. Higher odds of extreme improvement phenotype were significantly associated with being female (odds ratio [OR] = 1.85), married versus single (OR = 2.02), better motor function (OR = 1.03), lower pain intensity (OR = 0.78), and less frequent pain, especially chest pain (OR = 0.36). Several pain treatments were associated with higher odds of being in the extreme improvement versus no-change phenotypes including pain medication (OR = 1.85), physical therapy (OR = 1.51), yoga (OR = 1.61), home exercise program (OR = 1.07), and massage (OR = 1.69). Investigation of extreme phenotypes based on perceived improvement with pain treatment highlights the ability to identify characteristics of individuals based on pain treatment responsiveness. A better understanding of the biopsychosocial characteristics of those who respond and do not respond to pain treatments received may help inform better surveillance, monitoring, and treatment. With further research, the identification of risk factors (such as pain intensity and frequency) for treatment response/nonresponse may provide indicators to prompt changes in care for individuals with chronic pain after TBI.

The shy girl who became national team captain: a bioecological narrative of an Olympian’s life skills development

Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory scrutinized how the complex relationship between person and environment leads to human ­development. Although the concept of life skills is influenced by Bronfenbrenner’s work, exploration of the bioecological theory in sport psychology is limited. The bioecological theory was used to explore the life skills development of Júlia, a 38-year-old woman who competed nationally in track and field and internationally in rugby. Júlia completed a timeline and engaged in four interviews, and four social agents were interviewed to nuance her developmental journey. Inductive dialogic narrative analysis was conducted to present Júlia’s journey through creative nonfiction. Júlia developed life skills (e.g. communication, teamwork) from progressively more complex interactions through interpersonal relationships, experiences, and challenges in different contexts (e.g. school, work). Insights concerning the bidirectional nature of life skills development and transfer are discussed, as well as the influence sustained by the person’s biopsychosocial characteristics, culture, and time.

Comparison of Biopsychosocial Characteristics of Children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis According to Common Disease Subtypes.

In this study, we assessed the functional and biopsychosocial characteristics of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) patients according to disease subtypes. Child Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ), Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score-71 (JADAS-71), and Juvenile Arthritis Biopsychosocial Questionnaire (JAB-Q) scales were administered to 304 JIA patients, and the subscale of JAB-Q was administered to their families. The median age of JIA patients at diagnosis was 7.9 (5.5-13) years (female/male = 1.3). Most patients were under treatment (68.7%) and had inactive disease (69.3%). While there was no significant difference between JADAS-71 scores according to the JIA subtypes, total CHAQ scores in polyarticular JIA patients were higher than in systemic JIA patients (P = .005). Enthesitis-related arthritis (ERA) patients had higher JAB-Q fatigue total scores compared to systemic JJIA patients (P = .001). Juvenile Arthritis Biopsychosocial Questionnaire-child psychosocial status scores were higher in polyarticular JIA patients than oligoarticular and systemic JIA patients (P = .004 and P = .003, respectively), and they had higher JAB-Q child form total scores than systemic JIA patients (P = .006). In addition, systemic JIA patients' parents had higher JAB-Q family total scores compared to oligoarticular JIA patients' parents (P = .03). Our results suggest that polyarticular JIA patients had higher CHAQ, JAB-Q psychosocial status, and child form total scores, and the JAB-Q fatigue score was higher in ERA patients. Also, JAB-Q-parent scores were higher in systemic JIA patients' parents. Biopsychosocial characteristics should be evaluated in both JIA patients and their parents.

Talent development in childhood: Early specialization or sampling? From an either… or… question to a 2 × 2 × 3 question cuboid

A central, yet still unresolved, question about optimal youth talent development asks whether children should specialize and train systematically in one sport— early specialization—or gain different playful experiences in several sports— early sampling. Based upon theoretical considerations, we problematize dichotomous discussions and offer a complex 2 × 2 × 3 question cuboid differentiating between two goals (performance in adulthood and positive youth development), two continuum-based dimensions (task-specificity and exercise mode), and three perspectives (nomothetic, group-specific, and idiographic). Accordingly, resolving the question about optimal youth talent development involves assembling answers derived from 12 different questions. Through our theoretical contribution, we identified several nomothetic principles offering stakeholders initial recommendations and orientations to estimate the appropriate need for high task-specificity and exercise mode in relation to each goal. We suggest adapting these recommendations according to group-specific characteristics, such as sport and age, and idiographic fine-tuning according to children's biopsychosocial characteristics.

Identifying Biopsychosocial Characteristics of Emergency Youth Shelter Residents With Psychiatric Diagnoses.

Background In the United States, homelessness is an issue that may affect a significant portion of the adolescent population. There is no consensus on the extent to which this population has been impacted by poor mental health and lack of resources. This study aimed to characterize trends among those who struggle with housing insecurity and mental illness to provide a clearer picture of mental health needs among this population. Methods Data from 641 adolescents who presented to a local adolescent homeless shelter between 2015 and 2021 were utilized to determine if there were significant associations between specific mental illness diagnoses and biopsychosocial characteristics. A chi-square test of independence was performed on demographic and psychosocial variables for categories with a frequency greater than five. For continuous variables, an unpaired t-test was utilized to assess significance (p<0.05). Results Among the study population, 61.3% (369) had at least one psychiatric diagnosis, which is higher than even the most conservative estimates of mental illness among the general public. Having one or more psychiatric diagnoses was significantly associated with suicide attempts, documented aggressive behavior, and tobacco use. Contrary to our initial hypothesis, there were no significant correlations between psychiatric diagnoses and demographic characteristics or drug use other than tobacco. Conclusions Our findings indicate that though the particular reasons for homelessness among adolescents may vary, the prevalence of mental illness among these young individuals was roughly uniformly distributed and vastly above normal levels. Future research must focus on developing interventions to mitigate the effects of mental illness among homeless adolescents, as they are at a vulnerable point in their formative years.

Risk factors for opioid addiction in chronic non-cancer pain

Opioids are very effective pain medications, but they are not without complications. Its use in chronic cancer pain is clearly established, but not in chronic non-cancer pain. Opioid use has increased in recent years, but at the same time, it has been accompanied by an increase in side effects and related complications, including abuse, abuse and opioid addiction. If we look in the literature on the subject there is a global concern to make an adequate therapy with risk reduction, but the samples studied make it difficult to extrapolate results to the general population and even more so if we take into account factors such as psychiatric comorbidity. This leads us to consider the need to study our own population, its characteristics and see how it is being treated, to refine as much as possible on an appropriate prescription. The authors have carried out a cross-sectional study on patients with non-cancer chronic pain referred to psychiatry and the presence of opioid use disorder. We found risk factors related to the biopsychosocial characteristics of the patients and the characteristics of pain and its treatment. Knowing the risk factors, we can avoid yatrogeny, implement primary and secondary prevention and, ultimately, improve the quality of patient care.

Using Presurgical Biopsychosocial Features to Develop an Advanced Clinical Decision-Making Support Tool for Predicting Recovery Trajectories in Patients Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty: Protocol for a Prospective Observational Study.

Following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), 10% to 20% of patients report dissatisfaction with procedural outcomes. There is growing recognition that postsurgical satisfaction is shaped not only by the quality of surgery but also by psychological and social factors. Surprisingly, information on the psychological and social determinants of surgical outcomes is rarely collected before surgery. A comprehensive collection of biopsychosocial information could assist clinicians in making recommendations in relation to rehabilitation, particularly if there is robust evidence to support the ability of presurgical constructs to predict postsurgical outcomes. Clinical decision support tools can help identify factors influencing patient outcomes and support the provision of interventions or services that can be tailored to meet individuals' needs. However, despite their potential clinical benefit, the application of such tools remains limited. This study aims to develop a clinical decision tool that will assist with patient stratification and more precisely targeted clinical decision-making regarding prehabilitation and rehabilitation for TKA, based on the identified individual biopsychosocial needs. In this prospective observational study, all participants provided written or electronic consent before study commencement. Patient-completed questionnaires captured information related to a broad range of biopsychosocial parameters during the month preceding TKA. These included demographic factors (sex, age, and rurality), psychological factors (mood status, pain catastrophizing, resilience, and committed action), quality of life, social support, lifestyle factors, and knee symptoms. Physical measures assessing mobility, balance, and functional lower body strength were performed via video calls with patients in their home. Information related to preexisting health issues and concomitant medications was derived from hospital medical records. Patient recovery outcomes were assessed 3 months after the surgical procedure and included quality of life, patient-reported knee symptoms, satisfaction with the surgical procedure, and mood status. Machine learning data analysis techniques will be applied to determine which presurgery parameters have the strongest power for predicting patient recovery following total knee replacement. On the basis of these analyses, a predictive model will be developed. Predictive models will undergo internal validation, and Bayesian analysis will be applied to provide additional metrics regarding prediction accuracy. Patient recruitment and data collection commenced in November 2019 and was completed in June 2022. A total of 1050 patients who underwent TKA were enrolled in this study. Our findings will facilitate the development of the first comprehensive biopsychosocial prediction tool, which has the potential to objectively predict a patient's individual recovery outcomes following TKA once selected by an orthopedic surgeon to undergo TKA. If successful, the tool could also inform the evolution rehabilitation services, such that factors in addition to physical performance can be addressed and have the potential to further enhance patient recovery and satisfaction. Three joint temperament-character configurations account for learning, personality and well-being: normative demographic findings in a representative national population.

A common practice in research and clinical practice is to use data considered representative of a target population to compare and understand the personality characteristics of specific groups or specific individuals. To this end, numerous studies have presented normative data for the temperament and character traits outlined in Cloninger's psychobiological model of personality. However, recent genomic evidence demonstrates that human personality is organized as a complex hierarchy that ascends beyond the individual traits to multi-trait profiles that regulate emotional reactivity (temperament profiles) or goals and values (character profiles), and then to three phenotypic networks, which integrate temperament profiles and character profiles, that regulate learning. Given this recent understanding, our aim was to provide a novel and more comprehensive description of personality features at a societal level (using a stratified sample representative of the Portuguese population) by considering personality at its higher levels of complexity. Toward this goal, a stratified sample of 2,443 Portuguese adults responded to the Revised Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-R). We summarize the prevalence of (a) temperament profiles, (b) character profiles, and (c) integrated temperament-character networks within the whole sample, as well as for men vs. women and different age groups separately. Independent of age and education, women were more likely to be capable of resourceful productivity and helpful cooperation combined with being more intuitive, meditative and creative than men. Independent of age and gender, individuals with a degree were also more likely to present these biopsychosocial features. We also found that the organized character profile was most typical of adults in their 40s. Finally, the distribution of personality profiles across age differed as a function of gender: for men the oldest individuals had the most coherent personalities while high personality integration was most prevalent for women in their 30s. These results have strong implications for research and intervention. In particular, these results are relevant for understanding the epidemiology of interactions between personality, mental health and well-being, including their expressions in a national population as a function of demographic characteristics.

Biopsychosocial characteristics of children admitted with failure to thrive.

The aim of this study was to characterise and compare the biopsychosocial characteristics of children admitted with failure to thrive (FTT), subdivided into those with underlying medical complexities (categorised as organic FTT - OFTT) and those with none (categorised as non-organic FTT - NOFTT), with a focus on the medical, nutritional, feeding skills and psychosocial domains. A retrospective review of medical records was conducted in children admitted with FTT from January 2010 to December 2020. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. A total of 353 children were included, with the mean age of presentation 0.82 ± 2.05 years (OFTT 1.16 ± 2.50 years, NOFTT 0.49 ± 1.41 years, P = 0.002). Approximately, half of the children were classified as having OFTT. These children had lower birth weights, were more likely to have a history of intrauterine growth restriction and had longer hospital stays. The NOFTT group had significantly more abnormal feeding strategies identified in their caregivers, whereas the OFTT group had more delayed feeding skills and oral aversion. There was no significant difference in psychosocial domains, with both groups having a comparably high risk of abuse and neglect. The classification of FTT as non-organic or organic based purely on psychosocial parameters did not reflect the complex nature of FTT within our local population. These groups had different medical variables, and caregiver feeding strategies. A multidisciplinary team approach is recommended for the assessment and intervention for children with FTT to address these domains and the complex interactions between them.

BackgroundAnkylosing spondylitis (AS) is a rheumatic disease that affects patients in a biopsychosocial framework due to its chronic inflammatory nature. It is known that anti-TNF therapy is given to patients with persistently high disease activity despite conventional treatments according to the ASAS recommendations [1].ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to examine the factors associated with the biopsychosocial status of patients with AS who were decided to be treated with anti-TNF therapy for the first time.Methods76 AS patients who were decided to treated with anti-TNF therapy included in the study. Socio-demographic informations of patients were collected. The Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) values were recorded for disease activity levels. Biopsychosocial status of the patients was evaluated by the BETY-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire (BETY-BQ). The Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) and Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) were used to assess functional and and daily living activities. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to assess anxiety and depression levels.ResultsThe mean age of the patients was 39.99 ± 10.0 years. The mean BASDAI scores indicated active disease and were 5.98 ± 1.78. There was a statistically significant moderate correlation between the BETY and the anxiety and depression subscales of HADS and BASDAI, in the positive direction (r= 0.692, p &lt;0.001 and r= 0.685, p &lt;0.001 and r= 0.552, p &lt;0.001). A statistically significant, strong correlation was found between the BETY, HAQ and BASFI scores in the positive direction (r= 0.834, p &lt;0.001 and r= 0.747, p &lt;0.001) (Table 1). It was observed that patients showed anxiety and depression characteristics according to HADS cut-off values (&gt;10 and &gt;7).ConclusionIt was concluded that the biopsychosocial status of anti-TNF naive patients with AS was affected by anxiety-depression levels, functionality, and disease activity score. Musculoskeletal pain latent classes and biopsychosocial characteristics among emerging adults

BackgroundEmerging adults (aged 18–29) report high levels of musculoskeletal pain; however, it is unknown if body location and intensity patterns are related to different biopsychosocial characteristics. This study identified patterns of self-reported musculoskeletal pain among emerging adults and assessed if there were differences in their lifestyle and psychological characteristics.MethodsData from survey responses from a large public university and a large medical university in the United States were used (n = 1,318). Self-reported pain location and intensity at five body regions were assessed, and latent class analysis identified classes separately for men and women. Mental health, physical activity, and sleep outcomes were compared between the classes.ResultsFour classes were identified for men and women. Three of the classes were consistent between genders – “no pain,” (women = 28% of their sample; men = 40% of their sample) “mild multisite pain,” (women = 50%; men = 39%) and “moderate-severe multisite pain” (women = 9%; men = 7%). The fourth class for women was “moderate spine pain,” (13%) and for men was “mild extremity pain” (13%). For both men and women, the “moderate-severe multisite” pain classes reported the highest levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, poorer sleep, and higher work physical activity than the “no pain” class. The “mild multisite” and “moderate spine” (women only) pain classes fell between the “no pain” and “moderate-severe” pain classes. The characteristics of the “mild upper extremity pain” class for men was similar to the “no pain” class.ConclusionsThe identified classes provide unique information on pain location and intensity in emerging adults. The high prevalence of “mild multisite pain” (n = 593; 45% of the total sample) demonstrates an intervention opportunity during this age range to prevent further increases in musculoskeletal pain later in life. Future work should assess the longitudinal outcomes of these pain classes, the impact of interventions for this age group, and the balance between leisure and occupational physical activity when addressing musculoskeletal health.

Why is tinnitus a problem? A large-scale qualitative evaluation of problems reported by tinnitus patients in mainland China

Objectives The lived experience of tinnitus has biopsychosocial characteristics which are influenced by sociocultural factors. The main purpose of this study is to investigate how tinnitus affects people in their everyday life in China. A deductive qualitative analysis examined whether an a priori Western-centric conceptual framework could extend to an Asian context. Design A large-scale prospective survey collected patient-reported problems associated with tinnitus in 485 adults attending four major ENT clinics in Eastern and Southern mainland China. Results The evidence suggests that patients in China express a narrower range of problem domains associated with the lived experience of tinnitus. While 13 tinnitus-related problem domains were confirmed, culture-specific adaptations included the addition uncomfortable (a novel concept not previously reported), and the potential exclusion of concepts such as intrusiveness, loss of control, loss of peace and loss of sense of self. Conclusions The sociocultural context of patients across China plays an important role in defining the vocabulary used to describe the patient-centred impacts of tinnitus. Possible explanatory factors include cultural differences in the meaning and relevance of certain concepts relating to self and in help-seeking behaviour, low health literacy and a different lexicon in Chinese compared to English to describe tinnitus-related problems.

Quality of life in older adults according to race/color: a cross-sectional study.

Increased longevity is accompanied by new social and health demands, such as the race/color social construct, indicating the need to identify the specific needs of older adults to maintain and improve their quality of life. We aimed to verify the direct and indirect associations of demographic, economic, and biopsychosocial characteristics with self-assessed quality of life in older adults according to race/color. This cross-sectional study included 941 older adults living in the urban area of a health microregion in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Older adults were divided into three groups: white (n = 585), brown (n = 238), and black (n = 102) race/color. Descriptive and trajectory analyses were performed (P < 0.05). Among the three groups, worse self-assessed quality of life was directly associated with lower social support scores and greater numbers of depressive symptoms. Worse self-assessed quality of life was also directly associated with a higher number of functional disabilities in basic activities of daily living and the absence of a partner among older adults of brown and black race/color. Lower monthly income and higher numbers of morbidities and compromised components of the frailty phenotype were observed among participants of white race/color, as well as lower levels of education in the brown race/color group. Factors associated with poorer self-assessed quality of life among older adults in the study community differed according to race/color.

PREDICTORS OF INDIVIDUAL TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES IN THE TRANSITION TO NON-DRIVING

Abstract For older adults who transition to non-driving, successful coping includes maintaining mobility. Individual transportation alternatives, e.g. rides from friends and family, are important coping factors in the transition to non-driving. However, it is unclear to what extent social network composition predicts the accessibility of these individual transportation alternatives. We examined whether various aspects of social networks (including living with a spouse/partner; having a child; living with a child; having other household members; having anyone to talk to about important things) were associated with the actual receipt of rides from family and friends. Using the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), a nationally representative cohort of Medicare beneficiaries ages 65 and older, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis using a subsample of community-dwelling older adults whose driving status was known at the baseline interview in 2015 (n = 5,889). We used logistic regression to estimate the association between social network indicators with the odds of receiving a ride from a family member or friend. When adjusting for biopsychosocial characteristics and current driving status, we found that having a spouse or partner was associated with a significant odds of having received a ride (adjusted OR, 95% CI = 1.41, 1.05–1.90) as was being able to name at least five people the participant could talk to about important things (adjusted OR, 95% CI = 1.65, 1.14–2.38). Our findings support previous evidence that marital status and support from social network members outside one’s household may be particularly important for accessible individual transportation alternatives.

Principal component analysis of the biopsychosocial features relevant to temporomandibular disorders.

This study aimed to explore the dimensionality of three biopsychosocial constructs with multiple subdimensions, including the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90R), pain catastrophizing scale (PCS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and to identify the latent dimensions of five biopsychosocial constructs (SCL-90R, PCS, PSQI, pain severity, and pain interference) using the principal component analysis (PCA) in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD). A secondary analysis of a previous cross-sectional study comprising 1488 patients with painful TMD was conducted using multiple questionnaires. PCA of the SCL-90R and PCS identified one factor, which explained 60.8% and 80.2% of the total variance, respectively. For the PSQI, three factors explained 61.3% of the variance. PCA resulted in two main orthogonal components: factor 1, which comprised a combination of scores for pain severity, pain interference and global scores of PCS, and PSQI; and factor 2, which comprised one measure of the SCL-90R. Factors 1 (46.5%) and 2 (20.0%) explained 66.5% of the total variance. The findings of this study revealed that five measures can be primarily categorised into two latent constructs of the psychological (affective) and pain-related (sensory-cognitive) dimensions. These core components could be applied in clinical settings and for research purposes.
