Supporting inclusive scientific communities: Insights from the ATBC society survey

AbstractAcademic societies have a special responsibility in supporting the inclusivity of scientific communities. A survey of 224 Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation society members indicates that, while the society provides stronger support for equity and inclusion compared to workplaces, there is a need for continued promotion of diversity within the broader scientific community.Abstract in Spanish is available with online material.

Hypercholesterolemia and laboratory reports: joint document from the Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC) and the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology - Lab Medicine (SIBioC)

Dyslipidemia is one of the most important risk factors for the development of atherosclerotic disease and its control, through well-proven therapies, allows an optimal risk management over time. LDL-cholesterol targets are well defined by international guidelines and based on individual cardiovascular risk. As guidelines evolve, also laboratory reports need to do the same, including lipid reference values by cardiovascular risk classes, to avoid misunderstandings and inappropriate lipid-lowering therapy withdrawal. The aim of the present joint document from the Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC) and the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology - Lab Medicine (SIBioC) is to analyze the importance of cardiovascular risk estimation, therapeutical targets, and crucial elements about dyslipidemia in laboratory tests, as well as to suggest a shared proposal for the report of lipid profile parameters to be applied to all clinical scenarios of our daily practice.

Histocompatibility assessment in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: recommendations from the Italian Society for Immunogenetics and Transplantation Biology (Associazione Italiana di Immunogenetica e Biologia dei Trapianti - AIBT).

The outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is significantly influenced by the degree of HLA histocompatibility between donor and recipient. To provide shared indications for required histocompatibility testing and interpretation before HSCT, the Italian Society for Immunogenetics and Transplantation Biology (Associazione Italiana di Immunogenetica e Biologia dei Trapianti [AIBT]) gathered members and created a working group to discuss and develop recommendations for histocompatibility assessment in HSCT.After a review of the literature and multiple panel discussions, AIBT developed up-to-date recommendations for the resolution levels of HLA typing, histocompatibility definitions of patients and donors, importance of anti-HLA antibodies, and significance of NK alloreactivity, which are reported in this document. These recommendations have been shared with the Italian Group for Bone Marrow Transplantation (Gruppo Italiano per il Trapianto di Midollo Osseo, cellule staminali emopoietiche e terapia cellulare [GITMO]) and the Italian National Center for Transplantation (Centro Nazionale Trapianti [CNT]). Notably, the increased use of HLA-mismatched transplantation (i.e., mismatched unrelated, haploidentical) in recent years has made these indications even more relevant for the standardization and improvement of quality of care.This document represents a useful instrument for health care workers involved in the field of HSCT, enhancing synergy with transplant physicians and enabling greater optimization of the available resources.

Balancing Act: an Interdisciplinary Exploration of Trade-offs in Reproducing Females.

Trade-offs resulting from the high demand of offspring production are a central focus of many subdisciplines within the field of biology. Yet, despite the historical and current interest on this topic, large gaps in our understanding of whole-organism trade-offs that occur in reproducing individuals remain, particularly as it relates to the nuances associated with female reproduction. This volume of Integrative and Comparative Biology (ICB) contains a series of papers that focus on reviewing trade-offs from the female-centered perspective of biology (i.e., a perspective that places female reproductive biology at the center of the topic being investigated or discussed). These papers represent some of the work showcased during our symposium held at the 2024 meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) in Seattle, Washington. In this roundtable discussion, we use a question-and-answer format to capture the diverse perspectives and voices involved in our symposium. We hope that the dialogue featured in this discussion will be used to motivate researchers interested in understanding trade-offs in reproducing females and provide guidance on future research endeavors.

Let's talk about sex: instructor views and hesitancies related to sex and gender in the biology classroom.

There is much current debate in the US regarding how sex and gender are approached in science and medical classrooms. There does not seem to be sufficient consensus around why it must be taught and how it should be implemented. State-enacted restrictions to both education and healthcare in recent years demonstrate the relevance and importance of sex and gender in the college classroom, not only including but especially in the biology classroom. Given the areas comprising the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB), these topics of sex and gender in biology instruction are incredibly salient to our members. Thus, this survey aimed to determine instructors' views of and experiences with sex-diverse gender-inclusive biology. College-level biology instructors who are members of SICB were surveyed about their views of science, views of sex and gender, teaching philosophy, and their experiences with inclusive teaching and with sex-diverse gender-inclusive teaching. The resulting data lead us to implore academic biology to provide more sex-diverse and gender-inclusive teaching tools and resources to educators, while minimizing potential fear of retaliation and backlash to instructors who utilize these teaching methods.

Voice of the Future 2024

Voice of the Future is a unique event organized by the Royal Society of Biology on behalf of the molecular bioscience community. It provides early-career scientists from across science, technology, engineering and mathematics with the rare opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament and ask parliamentarians their science policy questions in this environment. The 2024 event took place on 12 March, bringing together learned societies from across the sector. Lili Illman and Sagar Batra attended on behalf of the Biochemical Society, and here they share their experiences.

Building bridges: overcoming barriers to higher education for underrepresented students in the Warwickshire area

The University of Warwick's Biology Society hosted a 'murder mystery'-themed lab experience day for high school students from underrepresented backgrounds. The day consisted of taster lectures, engaging lab experiments and useful university application advice.

The society for craniofacial genetics and developmental biology 46th annual meeting.

The Society for Craniofacial Genetics and Developmental Biology (SCGDB) held its 46th Annual Meeting at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 10th-12th, 2023. On the first day of the meeting, Drs. Sally Moody and Justin Cotney were each honored with the SCGDBDistinguished Scientist Awards for their exceptional contributions to the field of craniofacial biology. The following two days of the meeting featured five sessions that highlighted new discoveries in signaling and genomic mechanisms regulating craniofacial development, human genetics, translational and regenerative approaches, and clinical management of craniofacial differences. Interactive workshops on spatial transcriptomics and scientific communication, as well as a poster session facilitated meaningful interactions among the 122 attendees representing diverse career stages and research backgrounds in developmental biology and genetics, strengthened the SCGDB community.
