AbstractCurrently, nanotechnology is developing at an exponential rate because of its widespread applications in various fields of life sciences. Traditionally, nanoparticles are fabricated through a variety of physical and chemical approaches but because of their limited efficiency in biomedical applications, biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles has gained much attention. Biogenically fabricated magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) possess unique features that enabled their use in therapeutics and environmental biotechnology. Biogenically MgONPs can be fabricated using plant extracts (Manihot esculenta, Rhizophora lamarckii, Ocimum sanctum, rosemary, Bauhinia purpurea, and others), bacteria (S. coelicolor, A. johnsonii RTN), fungi (Aspergillus flavus TFR‐12, Aspergillus brasiliensis TFR 2, white‐button mushroom's) and algae (S. whigti). These biogenically synthesized MgONPs are being reported as antifungal, antioxidant, antibacterial, antipyretic, anti‐inflammatory, and anticancer agents. Moreover, their photocatalytic activity is far being discovered against certain organic dyes. This review focuses on the biogenic synthesis of MgONPs, their applications in therapeutics, and as antimicrobial agents as well as future prospects associated with their applications in the biomedical field.

Biosynthesized Metallic Nanoarchitecture for Photocatalytic Degradation of Emerging Organochlorine and Organophosphate Pollutants: A Review

AbstractThe use of efficacious and cost‐effective pesticides (OP and OC) has undoubtedly proven to be a blessing and a baron because these pesticides are safeguarding the world from food insecurity. Unfortunately, their presence in aquatic bodies brings about an upsurge in water pollution. Amazingly, the photocatalytic degradation approach utilizing biogenic nanoparticles (BNPs) is a trendy state‐of‐the‐art approach and has been established to be a sustainable methodology for the complete mineralization of contaminants into harmless molecules. Thus, this work holistically explores the use of BNPs for photocatalytic degradation of OP and OC. Based on the review, it was found that the least amount of time needed for degradation was less than 5 minutes, while the maximum degradation efficiency was >80 %. The dominant radicals participating in the degradation are ⋅OH and O2⋅ and this radical dominance was enhanced by the oxygenated functional groups present in the biogenic entities employed for the biosynthesis of BNPs. The photocatalytic degradation data fits the pseudo‐first‐order and Langmuir isotherm models (R2 > 0.9), which indicates that the main adsorption mechanisms involved during electron‐hole pair formation and photocatalytic degradation are physisorption and monolayer at the surface of the BNPs. BNPs can sustain a >80 % degradation efficiency for approximately 5 cycles and are reusable for up to 8 cycles. It was also revealed that plants constitute 80 % of the engaged biogenic entities for BNP synthesis. Ultimately, this work offers novel avenues and future research hotspots that might accelerate the use of BNPs for sustainable agricultural and wastewater management practices.

Heliotropium eichwaldi‐functionalized gold nanoparticles synthesis, characterization, and biological activities

Nanoparticles (NPs) are the essential building block of nanotechnology; they have a wide range of biomedical applications. In comparison with chemical methods, green synthesis is significant because of their non‐toxicity, eco‐friendliness, and simplicity; thus, the plant extracts are useful in the biogenic synthesis of NPs. In this study, Heliotropium eichwaldi‐induced gold NPs (HE‐AuNPs) were produced. These HE‐AuNPs were afterward examined using UV–vis spectroscopy, FTIR, SEM, XRD, and EDX analysis. The XRD analysis authorized the crystalline structure of AuNPs with an average size of 11.11 nm for four peaks (38.31°, 44.39°, 64.76°, and 77.65°), the SEM analysis displayed the elongated sphere‐shaped morphologies of HE‐AuNPs with 20 nm size, and the EDX analysis revealed that Au (44.33%) was the main element of AuNP. The FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of various coating and reducing organic molecules. In comparison with HE extract and hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) trihydrate (HAuCl4.3H2O) solution, the AuNPs showed outstanding inhibitory activity against free radicals, ‐amylase, and AChE. Our work suggests the successful generation of HE‐AuNPs, subsequently significant antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti‐Alzheimer agents. However, further study is suggested to minimize potential risks.

Matcha-silver nanoparticles reduce gamma radiation-induced oxidative and inflammatory responses by activating SIRT1 and NLRP-3 signaling pathways in the Wistar rat spleen.

The biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles has drawn significant attention. The spleen is the largest lymphatic organ that is adversely impacted during irradiation. The current study was designated to evaluate the possible anti-inflammatory effect of matcha-silver nanoparticles (M-AgNPs) to reduce inflammation associated with γ-radiation induced-oxidative stress and inflammation in rats' spleen. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by biogenic synthesis using a green sonochemical method from matcha (M) green tea. The obtained M-AgNPs were extensively characterized by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Using zetasizer analysis, the surface charge, particle size, and radical scavenging DPPH assay of M-AgNPs were also examined. Biocompatibility and cytotoxicity were analyzed by MTT assay, and the IC50 was calculated. Four groups of 24 Wistar rats each had an equal number of animals. The next step involved measuring the levels of oxidative stress markers in the rat splenic tissue. Additionally, the amounts of inflammatory protein expression were evaluated using the ELISA analysis. The results indicated the formation of spherical nanoparticles of pure Ag° coated with matcha polyphenols at the nanoscale, as well as uniform monodisperse particles suited for cellular absorption. Results revealed that M-AgNPs improved all biochemical parameters. Furthermore, M-AgNPs relieve inflammation by reducing the expression of NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and enhancing the levels of ileSnt information regulator 1 (SIRT1). Histopathological examinations demonstrated the ability of M-AgNPs to overcome the damage consequent to irradiation and recover the spleen's cellular structure. These results confirmed that matcha is a potential biomaterial for synthesizing AgNPs, which can be exploited for their anti-inflammatory activity.

Biomedical Applications of Biosynthesized Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles.

Nickel oxide nanoparticles have gained tremendous attention recently in a variety of scientific domains thanks to their characteristic chemical, physical, optical, and biological properties. Due to the diversity of applications in various fields, different physicochemical methods have been used to synthesize nickel oxide nanoparticles. However, most conventional methods use hazardous chemicals during synthesis and become liable for potential health risks, while others are expensive and require a lot of energy to synthesize nanoparticles. As a result, the nanoparticles become less biocompatible and biologically inefficient. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles is currently proposed as a valuable alternative to the physical and chemical methods, as it is a simple, non-toxic, cheap, green and facile approach. This synthetic method uses biological substrates such as plant extracts, microorganisms, and other biological products to synthesize nickel oxide nanoparticles. The various phytochemicals from plant extracts, enzymes or proteins from microorganisms, and other biological derivatives play as reducing, stabilizing, and capping agents to provide bioactive and biocompatible nickel oxide nanoscale material. This review discusses current findings and trends in the biogenic synthesis of nickel oxide nanoparticles and their biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, antileishmanial, and anticancer, with an emphasis on antimicrobial and anticancer activity along with their mechanistic elucidation. Overall, this thorough study provides insight into the possibilities for the future development of green nickel oxide nanoparticles as therapeutic agents for a variety of ailments.

Biofabrication of nanoparticles: sources, synthesis, and biomedical applications.

Nanotechnology is an emerging applied science delivering crucial human interventions. Biogenic nanoparticles produced from natural sources have received attraction in recent times due to their positive attributes in both health and the environment. It is possible to produce nanoparticles using various microorganisms, plants, and marine sources. The bioreduction mechanism is generally employed for intra/extracellular synthesis of biogenic nanoparticles. Various biogenic sources have tremendous bioreduction potential, and capping agents impart stability. The obtained nanoparticles are typically characterized by conventional physical and chemical analysis techniques. Various process parameters, such as sources, ions, and temperature incubation periods, affect the production process. Unit operations such as filtration, purification, and drying play a role in the scale-up setup. Biogenic nanoparticles have extensive biomedical and healthcare applications. In this review, we summarized various sources, synthetic processes, and biomedical applications of metal nanoparticles produced by biogenic synthesis. We highlighted some of the patented inventions and their applications. The applications range from drug delivery to biosensing in various therapeutics and diagnostics. Although biogenic nanoparticles appear to be superior to their counterparts, the molecular mechanism degradation pathways, kinetics, and biodistribution are often missing in the published literature, and scientists should focus more on these aspects to move them from the bench side to clinics.

Biogenic Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles using Bergenia ligulata Rhizome Extract and their Biological Activities

Over the last few decades, nanoparticles were synthesized using various methods. Currently, studies are more focussed towards the biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles which has proven to simple, environmental-friendly, convenient and non-toxic as compared to other conventional methods. This work describes the biosynthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO NPs) using Bergenia ligulata rhizome extract. The synthesis of FeO NPs was validated by visual inspections when the colour of solution changed from dark brown to blackish brown. Other characterization including UV-visible spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, DLS and stability tests were also performed. UV-visible spectrum of FeO NPs revealed high signal at 290 nm. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis revealed various functional groups at different bands. XRD results confirms the crystalline structure of FeO NPs. The size and stability of the synthesized nanoparticles was studied by DLS analysis and stability test. Plant extracts and NPs produced were used for a quantitative study that revealed phenolic and flavonoid compounds in high concentration. ABTS and DPPH tests were carried out to assess the in vitro radical scavenging activities. Further, the antifungal activity was performed against Rosellinia necatrix, Fusarium spp, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. This study confirms that the synthesized FeO NPs are a novel natural preservative with possible uses in agricultural applications.

Diversity of Biogenic Nanoparticles Obtained by the Fungi-Mediated Synthesis: A Review.

Fungi are very promising biological objects for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles using different mycological cultures and substances obtained from them is a promising, easy and environmentally friendly method. By varying the synthesis conditions, the same culture can be used to produce nanoparticles with different sizes, shapes, stability in colloids and, therefore, different biological activity. Fungi are capable of producing a wide range of biologically active compounds and have a powerful enzymatic system that allows them to form nanoparticles of various chemical elements. This review attempts to summarize and provide a comparative analysis of the currently accumulated data, including, among others, our research group's works, on the variety of the characteristics of the nanoparticles produced by various fungal species, their mycelium, fruiting bodies, extracts and purified fungal metabolites.

Biogenic Synthesis of Zero Valent Fe/Magnetite Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Using Caralluma acutangula and Application for Methylene Blue Dye Degradation under UV Light Irradiation

Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles using plant extract is a promising trend in research to reduce chemical consumption and avoid wastewater treatment complications. In this work, the zero-valent Fe/Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe0/Fe3O4 NPs) were synthesized using Caralluma acutangula (CA) plant, widespread in the Jazan region in Saudi Arabia. The synthesis process involves hydrothermal treatment of plant extract and iron (III) mixture at 80 °C to facilitate the reduction reaction of iron (III) cations. The Fe0/Fe3O4 NPs were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, TGA, UV, and SBET. The obtained data support the formation of Fe0/Fe3O4 NPs crystal structure with an average particle size of 9.6 nm and surface area of 89 m2.g−1. The biosynthesized Fe0/Fe3O4 NPs were then applied for the photodegradation of Methylene blue (MB) dye as one of the most common organic dyes in wastewater due to several industrial human activities. Different parameters for MB degradation were performed, such as kinetics and thermodynamics studies. The data obtained reflect the nonspontaneous endothermic process with 87.8 KJ. mol−1 activation energy (Ea).

Facile green approach for solar energy assisted biogenic nanoparticles synthesis mediated by seed kernel aqueous extract of Trichosanthes tricupsidata and its potential biomedical applications

In this study, an eco-friendly approach is developed to green synthesize AgNPs using seed kernel aqueous extract of the bitter snake gourd, Trichosanthes tricupsidata (Tt). The biophysical properties of Tt-AgNPs formed under ideal conditions were characterized using UV–visible spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses. Tt-AgNPs showed substantial antibacterial activity against eight Gram-negative and five Gram-positive bacterial pathogens tested. Hemolytic assay performed against human-A erythrocytes ensured the biocompatibility of Tt-AgNPs at 2.8% of hemolysis that showed the standard requirements for nanoparticles hemolytic properties. Tt-AgNPs showed dose-dependent larval anti-mosquito activity against fourth instar larvae Aedes aegypti. Larval mortality of 100% was observed with highest concentration and the 24 h LC50 and LC90 values were found to be 233.18 and 446.22 µg/mL, respectively. No lethal effect was observed on non-target aquatic insect larvae Chironomus costatus. The overall findings of the study revealed the Tt-AgNPs are suitable for its potential biomedical applications.

The bio nanofabrication of metallic NPs is now an important dynamic area of research, with major significance in applied research. Biogenic synthesis of NPs is more desirable than physical and chemical synthesis due to its eco-friendliness, non-toxicity, lower energy consumption, and multifunctional nature. Plants outperform microorganisms as reducing agents as they contain large secondary biomolecules that accelerate the reduction and stability of the NPs. The produced NPs can then be studied spectroscopically (UV-Visible, XRD, Raman, IR, etc.) and microscopically (SEM, TEM, AFM, etc.). The biological reduction of a metallic ion or its oxide to a nanoparticle is quick, simple, and may be scaled up at room temperature and pressure. The rise in multi-drug resistant (MDR) microbes due to the immoderate use of antibiotics in non-infected patients is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in humans. The contemporary development of a new class of antibiotics with different mechanisms of action to kill microbes is crucial. Metals and their oxides are extremely toxic to microbes at unprecedentedly low concentrations. In addition, prevailing infections in plants and animals are raising significant concerns across the globe. NPs’ wide range of bioactivity makes them ideal antimicrobial agents in agricultural and medical fields. The present review outlines the synthesis of metallic NPs from botanicals, which enables the metals to be in a stabilized form even after ionization. It also presents a valuable database on the biofunctionalization of synthesized NPs for further drug development.

Endophytic Microorganisms From the Tropics as Biofactories for the Synthesis of Metal-Based Nanoparticles: Healthcare Applications

Nanoparticles (NPs) have gained great attention in recent years due to their extensive and innovative applications in the field of medicine. However, conventional physicochemical approaches for the synthesis of NPs may be limited and costly, and the reaction by-products are potentially toxic for human health and the environment. Bio-mediated synthesis of NPs exploiting microorganisms as nanofactories has emerged as an alternative to traditional methods, as it provides economic and environmental benefits. Tropical ecosystems harbor a high diversity of endophytes, which have a diverse array of metabolic pathways that confer habitat adaptation and survival and that can be used to produce novel bioactive compounds with a variety of biological properties. Endophytic bacteria and fungi cultivated under optimum conditions have potential for use in biogenic synthesis of NPs with different characteristics and desired activities for medical applications, such as antimicrobial, antitumoral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The bio-mediated synthesis of metal-based NPs can be favored because endophytic microorganisms may tolerate and/or adsorb metals and produce enzymes used as reducing agents. To our knowledge, this is the first review that brings together exclusively current research highlighting on the potential of endophytic bacteria and fungi isolated from native plants or adapted to tropical ecosystems and tropical macroalgae as nanofactories for the synthesis of NPs of silver, gold, copper, iron, zinc and other most studied metals, in addition to showing their potential use in human health.

Prospects of algae-based green synthesis of nanoparticles for environmental applications

Green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) has emerged as an eco-friendly alternative to produce nanomaterials with diverse physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. Previously used, physical and chemical methods involve the production of toxic byproducts, costly instrumentation, and energy-intensive experimental processes thereby, limiting their applicability. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles has come forward as a potential alternative, providing an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and energy-efficient approach for the synthesis of a diverse range of NPs. Several biological entities are employed in the biosynthesis of NPs including bacteria, fungi, and algae. However, the distinguishing characteristics of microalgae and cyanobacteria make them promising candidates for NPs synthesis because of their higher growth rate, substantially higher rate of sequestering CO2, hyperaccumulation of heavy metals, absence of toxic byproducts, minimum energy input, and employment of biomolecules (pigments and enzymes) as reducing and capping agents. Algal extract, being a natural reducing and capping agent, serves as a living cell factory for the efficient green synthesis of nanoparticles. Physiological and biological methods allow algal cells to uptake heavy metals and utilize them as nutrient source to generate biomass by regulating their metabolic processes. Despite their enormous potential, studies on the microalgae-based synthesis of nanoparticles for the removal of toxic pollutants from wastewater remained an unexplored research area in the literature. This review was aimed to summarize the recent advancements and prospects in the algae-based synthesis of nanoparticles for environmental applications particularly treating the wastewater.

Over the last few years, bionanotechnology has emerged as a useful tool in the remediation of heavy metals. The elimination of heavy metals continues to be a burning issue in research, and nanomaterials provide a particular affinity as well as high surface area for heavy metal adsorption. A chemically engineered nanoparticle can be expensive and also requires the use of toxic agents which may be undesirable for the environment. To cut the cost and produce clean, ecofriendly nanoparticles, biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles can be accomplished with the help of different microorganisms as well as plants, which can be further exploited for heavy metal remediation.

Phyto-fabricated Nanoparticles and Their Anti-biofilm Activity: Progress and Current Status

Biofilm is the self-synthesized, mucus-like extracellular polymeric matrix that acts as a key virulence factor in various pathogenic microorganisms, thereby posing a serious threat to human health. It has been estimated that around 80% of hospital-acquired infections are associated with biofilms which are found to be present on both biotic and abiotic surfaces. Antibiotics, the current mainstream treatment strategy for biofilms are often found to be futile in the eradication of these complex structures, and to date, there is no effective therapeutic strategy established against biofilm infections. In this regard, nanotechnology can provide a potential platform for the alleviation of this problem owing to its unique size-dependent properties. Accordingly, various novel strategies are being developed for the synthesis of different types of nanoparticles. Bio-nanotechnology is a division of nanotechnology which is gaining significant attention due to its ability to synthesize nanoparticles of various compositions and sizes using biotic sources. It utilizes the rich biodiversity of various biological components which are biocompatible for the synthesis of nanoparticles. Additionally, the biogenic nanoparticles are eco-friendly, cost-effective, and relatively less toxic when compared to chemically or physically synthesized alternatives. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles is a bottom-top methodology in which the nanoparticles are formed due to the presence of biological components (plant extract and microbial enzymes) which act as stabilizing and reducing agents. These biosynthesized nanoparticles exhibit anti-biofilm activity via various mechanisms such as ROS production, inhibiting quorum sensing, inhibiting EPS production, etc. This review will provide an insight into the application of various biogenic sources for nanoparticle synthesis. Furthermore, we have highlighted the potential of phytosynthesized nanoparticles as a promising antibiofilm agent as well as elucidated their antibacterial and antibiofilm mechanism.

Mechanistic Aspects of Microbe-Mediated Nanoparticle Synthesis.

In recent times, nanoparticles (NPs) have found increasing interest owing to their size, large surface areas, distinctive structures, and unique properties, making them suitable for various industrial and biomedical applications. Biogenic synthesis of NPs using microbes is a recent trend and a greener approach than physical and chemical methods of synthesis, which demand higher costs, greater energy consumption, and complex reaction conditions and ensue hazardous environmental impact. Several microorganisms are known to trap metals in situ and convert them into elemental NPs forms. They are found to accumulate inside and outside of the cell as well as in the periplasmic space. Despite the toxicity of NPs, the driving factor for the production of NPs inside microorganisms remains unelucidated. Several reports suggest that nanotization is a way of stress response and biodefense mechanism for the microbe, which involves metal excretion/accumulation across membranes, enzymatic action, efflux pump systems, binding at peptides, and precipitation. Moreover, genes also play an important role for microbial nanoparticle biosynthesis. The resistance of microbial cells to metal ions during inward and outward transportation leads to precipitation. Accordingly, it becomes pertinent to understand the interaction of the metal ions with proteins, DNA, organelles, membranes, and their subsequent cellular uptake. The elucidation of the mechanism also allows us to control the shape, size, and monodispersity of the NPs to develop large-scale production according to the required application. This article reviews different means in microbial synthesis of NPs focusing on understanding the cellular, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms of nanotization of metals.

Use of Different Natural Products to Control Growth of Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles in Green Solvent Emulsion, Characterization, and Their Photocatalytic Application.

Water, one of the crucial and the pillar resources to every living thing, could be polluted day to day by different causes such as expansion in industrialization, rapid increment in population size, the threat of climate, and growth of urbanization. The existence of a number of organic dyes, detergents, and pesticides from industrial effluents could lead to severe diseases and even to the death of human beings. Currently, remediation of those hazardous organic contaminants using semiconductor metal oxide catalysts has received extensive attention in recent years. Among the numerous nanometal oxides, titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) have been well known as a significant photocatalytic material due to their suitable physiochemical behaviors such as stability, conductivity, high surface area to volume ratio, structure, and porosity nature at the nanoscale level. TiO2 semiconductor nanoparticles could be synthesized via several physiochemical approaches; among those, the biogenic technique is the most selective one which involves the synthesis of NPs using different templates. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles is an environmentally friendly protocol that involves the use of different parts and types of biogenic sources such as bacteria, fungi, yeast, virus, and green plants or the byproducts of their metabolism, which act as both reducing and stabilizing agents. TiO2 NPs obtained via the biogenic method provide a potential application for the degradation of organic dyes and other pollutants in wastewater. This method of synthesis of NPs has been given a great attention by researchers due to their nontoxicity, low cost, environmental friendliness, the usage of green solvents, and simplicity of the process. This review focuses on summarizing the synthesis of TiO2 NPs using various biogenic sources, characterization, and their photocatalytic applications for the degradation of different wastes and organic dyes from polluted water.
