Oxidative ligninolytic enzymes and their role in textile dye biodegradation: a comprehensive review

ABSTRACT Dye degradation mediated by oxidoreductive enzymes has been well explored in textile wastewater treatment. Ligninolytic enzymes (LEs) play key roles in the biodegradation of textile dyes. This paper aimed to provide a comprehensive review of the potentiality of LEs in textile dye biodegradation. The sources, biodegradation mechanisms, and dye removal efficiencies of LEs were discussed. Moreover, factors affecting dye biodegradation efficiency, and applications and limitations of LEs were highlighted. LEs are extracellular protein complexes that have a synergetic effect on dye biodegradation and can remove up to 99% of the dye using one or more LEs over wide pH and temperature ranges. Laccase is a highly explored and examined enzyme compared to lignin peroxidase (LiP) and manganese peroxidase (MnP) for dye biodegradation. Although extensive research has been conducted on fungal laccases, it is worth noting that bacterial laccases exhibit unique properties, such as stability at elevated temperatures and alkaline pH, which are not typically observed in fungal laccases, making them an ideal candidate for the treatment of textile wastewater. Further research on the optimization of experimental conditions is required to improve the dye biodegradation efficiency of these enzymes. It is also crucial for improving biodegradation capabilities using recombinant DNA technology.

Tailor-made novel electrospun polycaprolactone/polyethyleneimine fiber membranes for laccase immobilization: An all-in-one material to biodegrade textile dyes and phenolic compounds

In spite of many works on the biodegradation of textile dyes and phenolic compounds, we propose a new, inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and sustainable material based on electrospun fiber and immobilized laccase. The polycaprolactone (PCL)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) electrospun fibers were optimized and prepared by electrospinning technique according to the operational parameters like PCL concentration (12 wt%), PEI concentration (10 wt%), voltage (16 kV), needle tip-collector distance (20 cm), and injection speed (0.7 mL/h). Next, characterization studies were performed to investigate the morphology and structure of the electrospun fibers without and with laccase. The crude laccase was obtained by cultivating the white rot fungus T. trogii (TT), and T. versicolor (TV). The resulting electrospun fibers showed a smooth surface with a mean diameter of around 560 nm, and larger diameters were observed after laccase immobilization. According to the results, immobilization increased the stability properties of laccase such as storage, and operational. For instance, the residual activity of the PCL/PEI/TTL and PCL/PEI/TVL after 10 repeated cycles, was 33.2 ± 0.2% and 26.0 ± 0.9%, respectively. After 3 weeks of storage, they retained around 30% of their original activity. Moreover, the PCL/PEI/TTL and PCL/PEI/TVL were found to possess high decolorization yield to remove Orange II and Malachite Green textile dyes from solutions imitating polluted waters. Among them, the PCL/PEI/TTL exhibited the highest decolorization efficiencies of Orange II and Malachite Green after 8 continuous uses at pH 5 and a temperature of 50 °C, reaching over 86%, and 46%, respectively. Moreover, PCL/PEI/TTL and PCL/PEI/TVL effectively degraded the 2,6-dichlorophenol phenolic compound at an optimal pH and temperature range and exhibited maximum removal efficiency of 52.6 ± 0.1% and 64.5 ± 7.6%, respectively. Our approach combines the advantageous properties of electrospun fiber material and immobilization strategy for the efficient use of industrial scale important enzymes such as laccase in various enzymatic applications.

In vitro and In silico Studies on the Removal of Methyl Orange from Aqueous Solution Using Oedogonium subplagiostomum AP1

The present study aims to investigate the potential of Oedogonium subplagiostomum AP1 in the removal of methyl orange from aqueous solution. The effects of process parameters, namely, dye concentration, biosorbent concentration, pH and contact time on adsorption were optimised using RSM. The predictions of the model output specified that process parameters influenced responses at a confidence level of 95% (P < 0.05). Optimum conditions for methyl orange removal (97%) was obtained at pH 6.5, contact time of 5.5 days, algal dose of 400 mg/L and dye concentration of 500 mg/L. Adsorption isotherm, kinetics and thermodynamic studies were conducted to assess the decolourisation efficiency. The results indicated that Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models best fitted the experimental data. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that methyl orange biosorption onto alga is spontaneous, favourable and exothermic in nature. The biosorbent-adsorbate interactions were characterised using UV-Vis, FT IR, SEM with EDX and XRD. The reuse potential of treated dye solution was assessed by dyeing fabrics. The physical properties of fabrics dyed using algae-treated water are comparable with that of tap water–dyed fabric proving the reuse potential of treated water in textile industries. The algal biomass subjected to composting diminishes the level of pollution. In silico study was performed to observe the interaction between methyl orange (ligand) and receptor protein (azoreductase) which plays an important role in the biodegradation of textile dyes. Thus, the results showed that Oedogonium subplagiostomum AP1 could be employed as an efficient and eco-friendly biosorbent for the removal of methyl orange.

Biodegradation of textile dyes by bacteria isolated from textile industry effluents

A country like Bangladesh where textile industries are the main source of developing economy, pollution problem from such industries creates a huge risk for the environment. Textile industries discharge a huge amount of effluent containing various harmful chemicals including synthetic dyes that are very stable and threat to the living organisms. This study deals with the potential decolorization and biodegradation of Bemacron Yellow HP-2R (BY), Bemacron Red RS (BR) and Bemacron blue RS 01 (BB) dyes using bacteria isolated from textile effluent. The effluent and soil samples were collected from different locations of discharge point. Only two isolates were screened out after primary screening using dye supplemented nutrient agar media. Following colony morphology, physiology and biochemical analysis, they were presumptively identified as Bacillus sp. and Staphylococcus aureus. They were subjected to decolorization of 0.002 g/l BY, BR and BB dyes. Bacillus sp. showed superior decolorization potential of BR (71%) and BB (83%) dyes after 5 days of incubation. Whereas, Staphylococcus aureus showed 79% decolorization of BY dye after 5 days incubation. Decolorization efficacy can be further improved by optimizing environmental conditions and process parameters.&#x0D; Stamford Journal of Microbiology, Vol.9(1) 2019: 5-8

Synthetic dyes are extensively used in a number of industries, such as textile dyeing. Due to their low biodegradability, they cause serious environmental pollution. Thus, in the present paper a partially-purified acid fungal laccase from the white-rot basidiomycete Coriolopsis gallica was entrapped into calcium alginate beads and applied to the decolorization of different synthetic dyes. Effects of immobilization conditions such as alginate concentration, CaCl2 concentration and the ratio enzyme/alginate (E/A) on the loading efficiency and immobilization yield were investigated. The optimal conditions for C. gallica laccase immobilization into Ca-alginate beads were 2% (w/v) sodium alginate, 2% (w/v) CaCl2, and 1:4 E/A (v/v). It was also found that laccase stability to pH and temperature increased after immobilization.Both the free and immobilized laccase alone showed a high efficiency to decolorize the anthraquinone dye Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) while a low decolorization yield was observed for the diazo dyes Reactive Black 5 (RB5) and Bismark Brown R (BBR) and the metal textile dye Lanaset Grey G (LG). The addition of the redox mediator 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) to the decolorization reaction increased significantly dye removal. The immobilized laccase retained 70% of its activity after four successive decolorization cycles except for BBR (51.2%). The results obtained showed that the immobilized laccase from C. gallica has potential for its application in dyestuff treatment.

Bacterial biodegradation and decolourization of toxic textile azo dyes

Textile industry is considered as one of the largest generators of toxic chemical waste water in India. Dyes released by the textile industries pose a threat to environmental safety. Recently, dye decolourization through biological means has gained momentum as these are cheap and can be applied to wide range of dyes. This review paper focuses on the bacterial biodegradation of toxic textile dyes. Along with the early history of dyes, the toxic effects of textile azo dyes also focused in this review. Various biological techniques for the biodegradation of textile dyes by microorganisms are clearly given in this review. The advantages of aerobic biodegradation over anaerobic degradation are also discussed in this review. The studies discussed in this paper indicate biological decolourization by bacteria has a great potential to be developed further as a decentralized wastewater treatment technology for small textile or dyeing units. However, further research work is required to study the toxicity of the metabolites of dye degradation and the possible fate of the utilized biomass in order to ensure the development of an eco-friendly technology. Synthetic dyes are widely used in textile, paper, food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The textile industry accounts for two thirds of the total dyestuff market. During dyeing process approximately 10-15% of the dyes used are released into the wastewater. In the present study Achromobacter xylosoxidans GRIRKNM11 isolated and sequenced from the textile dye effluent site was able to decolorize the turquoise blue dye (100 mg/L) within 48 h at 37°C and pH 7.0. Decolorisation was assayed using spectrophotometery and products formed during degradation were characterized through FTIR spectra.

Decolorization of the phthalocyanine dye reactive blue 21 by turnip peroxidase and assessment of its oxidation products

a b s t r a c t Peroxidases can be used in decolorization processes and the treatment of textiles effluents. This study evaluates the potential of the turnip peroxidase enzyme in the decolorization of the phthalocyanine textile dye Reactive Blue 21 (RB21). Some factors such as pH, the amount of H2O2 and the enzyme were evaluated in order to determine the optimum conditions for the enzyme performance. The reac- tion products formed during the decolorization of the RB21 dye were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry coupling (LC-ESI/MS). LC-ESI/MS analysis showed that the decolorization of the dye RB21 by turnip peroxidase is due to the breaking up of the chromatogenous system. The tests for toxicity towards lettuce seeds showed an increase of the toxicity after enzymatic treatment of the dye. This study verifies the viability of the use of the turnip peroxidase enzyme in the biodegradation of textile dyes.

Evaluation of Microbial Systems for Biotreatment of Textile Waste Effluents in Nigeria: Biodecolourization and Biodegradation of textile Dye

The evaluation of some microbial species for the decolourization and degradation of textile dye has been investigated. Six microbial strains were isolated from soil contaminated with textile waste effluents using thespread plate technique and the isolates were identified as bacterial isolates (Pseudomonas fluorescence, Pseudomonas nigificans, and Pseudomonas gellucidium) and fungal isolates ( Aspergillus niger, Proteus morganii and Fusarium compacticum} based on gram staining, morphological and biochemical tests. They were evaluated for theircapability to remove colour and degrade dye, reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) levels of textile waste effluents. The results revealed that all the bacterial and fungal isolates have a good potential to remove colour and degrade dye, reduce the COD and BOD levels of the textile waste effluents withpercent colour removal, COD and BOD reductions between 39 and 48%, 74 and 97% and 77 and 95%, respectively. Binary mixed culture of Pseudomonas fluorescence and Aspergillus niger was efficiently utilized for the removal of different initial concentration (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mg/l) of dye from textile waste effluents. It had a higher percentdecolourization than individual isolates. The stirred tank bioreactor was found to be very effective for efficient biotreatment of textile waste effluents.

Rhamnolipid from Pseudomonas desmolyticum NCIM‐2112 and its role in the degradation of Brown 3REL

The biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas desmolyticum NCIM 2112 (Pd 2112) was confirmed as rhamnolipid based on the formation of dark blue halos around the colonies in CTAB-methylene blue agar plates and the content of rhamnose sugar. The average yield of rhamnolipid was 0.398 g/l/day when grown on hexadecane as sole carbon source. Pd 2112 emulsification potential associated with cell free culture broth was stable for 72 h using various hydrocarbons and vegetable oils. Chemical structure of the biosurfactant was identified as mono-rhamnolipid (Rha-C(6) -C(8) ) using HPTLC, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, (1) H and (13) C NMR and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis. Pd 2112 mono-rhamnolipid (1 mg/ml) had increased permeabilization of Bacillus sp VUS NCIM 5342 and increased decolorization rate of textile dye Brown 3REL by 50%. Extracellular activities of lignin peroxidase and veratryl alcohol oxidase, enzymes involved in dye degradation, were significantly increased in the presence of mono-rhamnolipid by 324.52% and 100% respectively. Scanning electron micro-scopy observations revealed that rhamnolipid did not exert any disruptive action on Bacillus cells as compared to Tween 80. The mono-rhamnolipid of Pd 2112 has potential for its application in biodegradation of textile dyes.

Toxicity of textile dyes and their degradation by the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP)

The enzyme peroxidase is known for its capacity to remove phenolic compounds and aromatic amines from aqueous solutions and also to decolorize textile effluents. This study evaluates the potential of the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the decolorization of textile dyes and effluents. Some factors such as pH and the amount of H 2O 2 and the enzyme were evaluated in order to determine the optimum conditions for the enzyme performance. For the dyes tested, the results indicated that the decolorization of the dye Remazol Turquoise Blue G 133% was approximately 59%, and 94% for the Lanaset Blue 2R; for the textile effluent, the decolorization was 52%. The tests for toxicity towards Daphnia magna showed that there was a reduction in toxicity after the enzymatic treatment. However, the toxicity of the textile effluent showed no change towards Artemia salina after the enzyme treatment. This study verifies the viability of the use of the enzyme horseradish peroxidase in the biodegradation of textile dyes.
