Recording and Maintaining Post-Cancellation Access

This article is a written account of the presentation given by Jia Mi, based on her experience as the electronic resources and serials librarian at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). Three serials projects, a journal review, a “Big Deal” subscription review, and a bound journal review brought heightened attention to the importance of recording and maintaining post-cancellation access. This paper is an overview of what she learned.

Applying the Concept of Epistemic Injustice as a Philosophical Window to Examine Discrimination Experiences of LGBTQIA+ Migrants With Nurses.

Both stigma and discrimination, defined as a lack of knowledge of and a sense of discomfort in providing care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and + (LGBTQIA+) migrants, was found to manifest in a sample of LGBTQIA+ migrants who received nursing care in a recent study. The study concluded that nurses continue to have a limited understanding of the experiences of LGBTQIA+ migrants in the Canadian context, and that LGBTQIA+ migrants continue to have troubling 'care' experiences with nurses. Miranda Fricker has developed the concept of epistemic injustice drawing on feminist philosophy and social epistemology. Epistemic injustice refers to unfair treatment of a person by judging them as 'not a knower' in a communicative situation. For example, in a few circumstances when LGBTQIA+ migrants were admitted to psychiatric units due to suicide ideations as a direct result of identifying as a LGBTQIA+ migrants, the medical and nursing team responded with 'They are in Canada now. It is safe here!' and 'So, you are [LGBTQIA + ]! What's the big deal?' These unjust statements reflect an epistemic situation in which the hearer is negating what was heard, that is, that the speaker's intersecting identities of LGBTQIA+ and new immigrant has directly led to suicide ideation. The concept of epistemic injustice helps to frame this situation as one where the care provider is not doing justice to the needs of LGBTQIA+ migrants. This article draws on the narrative of an LGBTQIA+ migrant who is not recognised as a credible source of knowledge about their own lives and needs in the context of Canadian nursing care. Epistemic injustice helps to understand how stigma and discrimination is produced in this community by the very nursing profession who ostensibly want to help them.

Evaluation of the Implications of Big Data Analytics with Organizational Performance in Small and Medium Enterprises and Its Associated Role of Knowledge Management

Introduction: Big data are distinguished by their quantity, speed, variety, and reliability. Big data presents opportunity for “small and medium-sized” businesses (SME), in addition to being a reality for giant firms. The term "big data" denotes to the fact that numerous varieties of data have become more easily accessible, and its consequences for various organizational types may vary from one another. SME can benefit greatly from creating and utilizing big data. Aim and objectives: The main purpose of the study is to assess the implications of “big data analytics” with organizational performance in small and medium enterprises and its associated role of knowledge management. Methods: This study's main goal was to develop a big data KM model for SME through an examination of several business situations. This study used the qualitative analysis of data methodology. The study gathered examples of large data for SME, which it then used to test a KM model. Data collection, coding, and analysis are the three main components of qualitative data analysis. Results: Big data collection is a business endeavor for SMEs. An SME needs to specify its big data plans and deal with all potential organizational difficulties. Big data must be strategically used in a way that is consistent with the SME's business strategy and embraces a long-term strategy for competitive sustainability. To tackle the big data challenge, IT solutions are chosen based on the definition of data requirements.

INTEGRATING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) into CORPORATE GOVERNANCE SYSTEMS

Integrating AI, or Artificial Intelligence, into companies’ management is a big deal. It can change things for the better. This piece looks at how it affects corporate governance. It shows that AI can help make decisions easier, improve how we manage risks, and even make it simpler for companies to connect with their stakeholders. The cool thing about AI is that it lets boards and leaders make better and faster choices using intelligent data analysis and predictions. Plus, AI automation makes following rules easier and boosts transparency. This helps create a culture of accountability, too. However, there are some tricky challenges to think about. There are ethical questions, data privacy concerns, and algorithm bias. We need to address these challenges quickly! The development of solid rules for governance is critical here. Focusing on mixing innovation with ethical regulations is essential to keep growing in a way that builds trust and maintains accountability with everyone involved.

Unraveling innovative treatments for spinal muscular atrophy: a brief review

In the past few years, there have been amazing breakthroughs in treating spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which is a big deal considering it's been studied for over a hundred years. Now, there are three approved therapies that all work to increase SMN protein production. They do this by fixing the genetic problem either by replacing the faulty SMN1 gene or by helping the SMN2 gene produce more of the right kind of protein. One way they do this is by using a special virus called adeno- associated viral vectors (AAV9) to deliver the gene therapy because the SMN1 gene is small enough to fit inside. The paper discusses the evolution of SMA treatment, focusing on advancements like gene therapy and new drug treatments. It highlights challenges in interpreting efficacy, especially regarding disease classification. Despite successes, issues like limited trial populations and varying disease stages pose complexities in care. With expanding treatment options, including those in advanced development stages, the landscape of SMA management grows more intricate. However, the importance of timely diagnosis and interdisciplinary clinical management remains crucial, recognizing that despite drug treatments, many patients still face significant disease burdens. This article aims to give a quick rundown of spinal muscular atrophy, starting from when people first noticed the disease up until now, when there are some really cool new treatments that are changing how the disease affects people.

Determinants of Downloads as Demand for Hybrid Journals

Although Big Deal contracts that provide access rights to all electronic journals published by the publisher initially gained favor with university libraries, some libraries have terminated these contracts owing to increased charges since the 2010s. Consequently, they are faced with the problem of selecting journals for purchase within their limited budgets. This study investigates the factors affecting the number of downloads, representing journal demand, to provide libraries with guidance on journal selection. The download equation for 1485 hybrid journals published by Springer Nature is formulated using ordinary least squares. The results found that 5% and 50% of the 1485 journals generated approximately 30% and 85% of the downloads in 2022, respectively. Downloads are concentrated in fewer journals, although the Pareto principle does not apply to hybrid journals. Demand concentration implies that libraries do not need to maintain access rights to all journals. Recently, a few leading publishers have provided access rights to almost all electronic journals based on transformative agreements aiming to promote open access. Therefore, this study’s findings raise the issue of the rationale for bundling electronic journals in transformative agreements, which is similar to Big Deal. Moreover, the results of the download estimation reveal that hybrid journals with more open access articles, larger citation scores, and longer histories acquire more downloads. These findings indicate that open access accelerates the dissemination of research.

Existentialist Philosophies of Anxiety: A Comparative Exploration of Kierkegaard and Heidegger

This academic essay delves into the intricate realm of existentialist philosophies concerning anxiety, examining the perspectives of two towering figures in philosophy: Sren Kierkegaard and Martin Heidegger. Both of these existential philosophers have made a big deal out of the concept of anxiety and have a considerable understanding of it. From a particular perspective, it is possible that Heidegger drew on Kierkegaard's interpretation of the concept of anxiety. The objective of this analysis is to comprehensively scrutinize the philosophical underpinnings of anxiety, exploring how these thinkers conceived it in the context of the human experience. Furthermore, this essay examines the religious backgrounds of Kierkegaard and Heidegger, shedding light on the profound influence of their respective religious upbringings on their philosophical interpretations of anxiety. As contemporary society grapples with a multitude of anxieties, the insights of these philosophers remain pertinent, providing valuable perspectives on the nature of anxiety, freedom, and human existence. The essay also critiques part of modern psychological approaches to anxiety, revealing the enduring relevance of existentialist thought.

“It Is No Big Deal!”: Fraud Diamond Theory as an Explanatory Model for Understanding Students’ Academic Fraudulent Behavior

The Fraud Diamond theory (rationalization, opportunity, motivation and perceived capability) has been widely used as a framework to explain criminal behavior. However, little is known about its application in an academic context. Research on the relationship between the prevalence of academic fraud (e.g., cheating on exams, plagiarizing essays) and students’ perceptions of the severity of such behaviors is also lacking. We surveyed 1,032 university students and asked them whether they engaged in fraudulent behaviors and how severe they thought these behaviors were. The results showed that motivation, rationalization, and perceived capability dimensions of the Fraud Diamond theory are important factors in predicting the prevalence of students’ academic fraudulent behavior, but not opportunity. We also found that the more students reported that they engaged in fraudulent academic behaviors, the less severe they perceived those behaviors to be. However, only rationalization emerged as a predictor of perceived severity. The results suggest that the more students are able to find justifications for their fraudulent behavior, the less severe they perceive those behaviors to be. Rationalization seems to explain, therefore, the tendency to disassociate moral values from dishonest behavior. Taken together, the study shows a vicious cycle between engaging in fraudulent academic behavior and the ability to justify these acts. Implications for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are discussed.

Faster (Multi) Document Summarization using PRIMERA & PEGASUS

Text summarization is super important when it comes to dealing with loads of information that's available on the internet and in archives. Trying to summarize all that stuff manually would be impossible because there's just so much of it. That's why automatic summarization techniques have become a big deal. These techniques basically condense documents by picking out the most important ideas. At first, people were mainly focused on summarizing individual documents, but now the latest research is all about summarizing groups of documents. In our study, we've come up with this cool new way to combine the Primera and Pegasus models. This combo not only improves the quality of the summaries, but it also speeds up the whole process. And guess what? We can even summarize multiple documents at the same time thanks to some batch processing techniques that make everything run smoother.

Drone Technology and it’s Application

Drones were first used by the military, but now they're not just for the army – they're for regular folks too. People started using them in the 2000s, and they're not just for serious stuff like analyzing power system faults. Now, we call them drones, and they're like flying robots. You can use them for all kinds of fun things like taking cool pictures, exploring hard-to- reach places, and even joining drone competitions. They've become a big deal on social media and in business competitions. Lately, smart people are working on making tiny drones that can fly by themselves, especially in indoor spaces. The good news is that the parts that make drones work, like tiny computers, sensors, batteries, and ways for them to talk wirelessly, are getting smaller and cheaper. So, soon, we might see small drones everywhere, doing all sorts of stuff in our daily lives at prices we can all afford. But, as drones become more popular, there are some worries. Imagine if someone used a drone to spy on you in your private space – that's not cool! And when drones fly in busy places like cities and airports, there could be problems. That's why we need rules and checks to make sure things don't go wrong. So, while drones are super cool and fun, we also need to make sure everyone stays safe and feels secure. “Canada is a Big Deal Here”: The eFP Battle Group and Host Nation Public Opinion

Does personal contact between allied service members and local citizens result in greater public acceptance of foreign military presence? To what extent do members of the host nation's domestic society assess favorably the forward deployment of allied military personnel on their own national territory? Substantial scholarly literature has probed these types of questions in the context of US globe-spanning military deployments. This study, however, departs from the US-centric approach and focuses on the deployment of a middle power. In the presented analysis, we examine the Canadian approach to “winning hearts and minds” in Latvia. In 2023, upwards of 800 Canadian troops were stationed in Latvia. Using original survey data, we measure local citizens' attitudes towards the Canadian-led battlegroup. Our results speak to the fact that Canadian and other foreign armed forces' presence in Latvia is generally accepted by the wider society. Despite Moscow's active attempts to cultivate anti-NATO sentiments, the Latvian public welcomes the stationing of Canadian troops on the country's soil.

Ice Storms: Not as Cool as They Seem

Ice storms might sound fascinating, but for forests, they are not as cool as they seem! Ice storms happen when freezing rain coats trees, branches, and the forest floor in a shiny, frozen glaze. These storms can be a big deal because they can affect our forests and the things we care about, like, wood, wildlife, and places for recreation. Despite this, we do not know very much about how ice storms affect forests. Scientists at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire (USA), decided to learn more. They used fire-fighting pumps and hoses to create experimental ice storms in the forest during the winters of 2016 and 2017. They found that these experimental storms caused a lot of short- and long-term damage to trees, including breaking of twigs and branches. In a nutshell, ice storms are not just about frozen beauty—they have real consequences for our forests and species that are not used to ice!

Technical analysis of seawater desalination

As the population grows and the economy thrives. The amount of edible water has decreased, and this phenomenon is raising awareness about water supply. Dumping salt into a bucket of water may seem like no big deal, but reversing the process is a lot more complicated than people might think. Seawater desalination technology is also a hot topic of research. There are two major techniques for desalting. One is distillation, and the other is reverse osmosis filtration. This essay mainly discusses how the two techniques work and what benefits human beings can possibly obtain from the future development of such technology based on existing literature and statistical data, namely prosperity. The result shows that the reverse osmosis process uses less energy in comparison to thermal distillation. However, desalination is not as easy as we expected. Regarding energy consumption and cost efficiency, scientists have to maintain high productivity while reducing the impact on the environment.

Are we relying on the wrong data? Analysis of e-journal usage data at seven R1 and R2 research universities

Using data from seven R1 and R2 universities in Ohio, this study seeks to determine the extent of usage of full-text e-journal articles stored across multiple platforms. Specifically, COUNTER 5 data is presented from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer), looking at usage within each of the publishers’ respective platforms, as well as in EBSCO, JSTOR, and OhioLINK’s Electronic Journal Center platform. The overarching goal of the analysis is to identify where exactly usage occurred for this e-journal content within the different platforms, especially in cases where an individual title has duplicate full-text access. Analysis of this data was conducted using Tableau and Excel. Findings raise significant questions about end-user behavior in terms of students’ and faculty’s ability to locate full text, regardless of whether it is discoverable from Google or other commercial search engines. The findings also suggest a strong connection between EBSCO usage and the academic calendar, with peak usage (as a percentage of overall usage) occurring in October, November, March, and April. Lastly, findings for Taylor & Francis e-journals within EBSCO call into question what these duplicate holdings mean for “big deal” subscription packages.

Optimizing Resource Usage in Cagayan de Oro City Institutions, Philippines

Aside from the Human Resources, the most valuable resources of the company are the assets comprising the current assets and fixed assets. Currently, many companies require better management of their assets but the misuse of company resources is a serious issue that many firm employees see as “no big deal.” However, the principle remains the same that firm resource is a lasting resource and it is for the use of firm and nothing else. This study examined the misuse of firm resources in government and non-government sectors in Cagayan de Oro City. The objectives were: determining the commonly misuse firm resources, awareness and involvement of employees in misusing the resources, and management report on misusing the resources. This study used descriptive research design with the aid of survey questionnaire in gathering the primary data supported by interview. Findings revealed that the commonly misused resources of the firms were office supplies with 40%, followed by internet usage with 30%, and telephone usage with 15%. In awareness and involvement of employees on the commonly misused resources, first in the rank was aware but involved with 30% followed by aware and not involved with 25% of the employee respondents. In the category of reporting of employees of the misused resources to the management, the employee witnesses but does not report with 40% followed by witnesses and does the report to the management with 30%. Interview revealed that misused of resources happened due to lack of proper orientation on mission and goals of the firm, over supply of resources, and absence of guidelines. The researchers concluded that intentional insider misuse of institution resources represents a significant threat to the organizations and whether government or non-government institutions, the presence of misuse of resources committed by the employees based on the results of this study still exists. Recommendations are: there should be a proper inventory system, policies and guidelines in using the resources, and close monitoring of firm resources.

Ongoing Measles in the Developed and Developing World.

Measles is a vaccine-preventable illness. Nevertheless, in recent years, measles is still endemic and epidemic in both the developed world and the developing world. The public perception of measles in the past was that it was not a big deal. However, measles is associated with a number of complications which can be places in three categories which are: acute(diarrhea, otitis media, pneumonia, encephalitis, seizures, and death) and delayed-subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) and post-measles immune amnesia. Contrary to the beliefs of the anti-vaccine lobby, measles is bad. In acute measles, the death rate is 1-3 per 1000 and the risk of encephalitis is 1 per 1000. Relatively recent investigations indicate that SSPE is considerably more common than previously believed. The worldwide contribution of post-measles immune amnesia to morbidity and mortality is likely to be huge. In exposure situations, two doses of measles vaccine will prevent 99% of cases. Presently in the United States, the first dose is given at 12 through 15 months of age. The second dose is most often administered at 4 through 6 years of age. In my opinion, the second dose of measles vaccine should be given 4-6 weeks after the first dose rather than at 4-6 years of age. Children who don't have antibody to measles should not travel to risk areas.

Empowering robust biometric authentication: The fusion of deep learning and security image analysis

Many societal entities now have more excellent standards for the efficacy and dependability of identification systems due to the ongoing advancement of computer technology. Traditional identification methods, such as keys and smart cards, have been supplanted by biometric systems in highly secure environments. This research presents a smart computational method for automatically authenticating fingerprints for identity (ID) verification and personal identification. Compared to more traditional machine learning algorithms, the results from applying Deep learning (DL) in areas like computer vision, image identification, robotics, and voice processing have generally been positive. Due to their capacity to analyse big data size and deal with fluctuations in biometric data (such as ageing or expression problems), DL has been heavily used by the artificial intelligence research community. Several biometric systems have succeeded with automatic feature extraction employing deep learning approaches like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In this research, we provide a biometric process that uses convolutional neural networks. This work introduces a deep learning-based biometric identification system that uses Monte Carlo Dropout (MC Dropout). Combining these two systems makes the authentication process more secure and dependable. Fingerprint image enhancement techniques involve the application of Gabor filters and structure-adaptive anisotropic filters, which have proven to be effective in enhancing the clarity and distinctiveness of fingerprint patterns. To improve the efficiency of deep learning models, this work proposes the Inception-Augmentation GAN (IAGAN) model for data augmentation. The study adds to security development by integrating novel biometric identification and authentication approaches with cutting-edge neural network technology. In this research, we provide a new activation function to speed up the convergence of deep neural networks. The results of 99.6% on Gabor filters and 99.8% on the structure-adaptive anisotropic filter with GACNN with MCD show that deep neural networks can excel over competing approaches with enough training data.

Corticosteroid Injection in the Operative Hand Prior to a Trigger Finger or Carpal Tunnel Release: If It Is Not at the Surgical Site Then What Is the Big Deal?

Patients who have had a corticosteroid injection at the surgical site within 90 days of trigger finger release (TFR) or carpal tunnel release (CTR) have an elevated risk of postoperative infection. Currently, it remains unknown if a preoperative injection in proximity to the surgical site for a separate complaint alters the risk of a postoperative infection. A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients who underwent TFR or CTR between 2010 and 2022. Patients who had a corticosteroid injection at or near the surgical site within 90 days of surgery were included. Outcome measures included uncomplicated healing, superficial infection requiring antibiotics, and deep infection (DI) requiring surgical debridement. There were 564 cases in which a corticosteroid injection was performed within 90 days of TFR or CTR. Superficial infections occurred in 12 (2.1%), and DIs occurred in 6 (1.1%) cases. There was no significant difference in infection rates between the two groups relative to the location of the injection nor timing of the injection (0-30, 31-60, or 61-90 days prior to surgery). Patients who had an injection at the surgical site within 90 days of TFR or CTR had an elevated rate of postoperative infection compared with published rates in the literature. This study is unique in that preoperative injections at an adjacent site in the palm also correlated with an elevated rate of infection, similar to patients who had an injection at the surgical site.
