Evaluation and comparison of the benthic and microbial indices of biotic integrity for urban lakes based on environmental DNA and its management implications

With the intensification of human disturbance in urban lakes, the loss of eukaryotic biodiversity (macroinvertebrates, etc.) reduces the accuracy of the index of biotic integrity (IBI) assessment. Therefore, how to accurately evaluate the ecological status of urban lakes based on IBI has become an important issue. In this study, 17 sampling sites from four lakes in Wuhan City, China were selected to analyze the composition and diversity characteristics of benthic and microbial communities and their relationship with environmental factors based on eDNA high-throughput sequencing, and compare the application effects of the benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI) and the microbial index of biotic integrity (M-IBI). Canonical correspondence analysis showed that the key environmental factors affecting benthic family/genus composition were temperature, conductivity, total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN). Redundancy analysis showed that pH, TP, conductivity, and ammonia nitrogen had the greatest impact on microbial phyla/genera. After screening, four and six core metrics were determined from candidate parameters to establish B-IBI and M-IBI. The B-IBI evaluation results showed that healthy, sub-heathy, and poor accounted for 58.8%, 35.3%, and 5.9%, respectively, in the sites. The results of the M-IBI evaluation showed that 29.4% of the sites were healthy, 47.1% were sub-healthy, and 23.5% were common. M-IBI was positively correlated with water quality (r = 0.74, P < 0.001), whereas B-IBI was not. Further results showed that M-IBI was negatively correlated with the relative abundance of bloom-forming cyanobacteria Planktothrix (r = -0.54, P < 0.05). Therefore, M-IBI is more sensitive than B-IBI and can better reflect the actual water pollution status. This study can provide a new perspective for ecological assessment and management of urban lakes strongly disturbed by human activities.

Community characteristics of macroinvertebrates and ecosystem health assessment in Qin River, a main tributary of the Yellow River in China.

To know well the ecosystem health status of Qin River, a main tributary of the Yellow River and the largest river in Jincheng region, macroinvertebrates from 49 sampling sites in the Qin River and its largest tributary, the Dan River, were investigated, and community characteristics were analyzed in the autumn of 2020; a Benthic index of Biotic Integrity (B-IBI) was established based on four metrics by a series of steps. The results showed that a total of 38 species of macroinvertebrates were collected and identified, belonging to 6 orders and 19 families, consisting of 17 Insecta species, 13 Gastropoda species, and 4 Oligochaeta species. Four species in Insecta belonged to EPT (E, Ephemeroptera; P, Plecoptera; T, Trichoptera); 10 species in Insecta belonged to Chironomidae and Tipulidae families. All species in Gastropoda belonged to Basematophora order, and, especially, Bellamya aeruginosa is highly tolerant to nutrients. All species in Oligochaetes belonged to Tubificidae family, which indicates eutrophication and low-dissolved oxygen. The dominant species in the study were Ephemera orientalis, Chironomus riparius Meigen, and Limnodrilus claparedianus. The final B-IBI scores varied from 0.75 to 3.75, with 5 sites in "excellent," 10 sites in "good," 10 sites in "normal" status, 12 sites in "poor" status, 12 sites in "very poor." "Very poor" and "poor" sites were mainly located in the middle reach of the Qin River and upper-middle reach of the Dan River in Jincheng region. B-IBI strongly differentiated the reference sites and impaired sites, suggesting the suitability of the B-IBI in the Qin River basin. Significantly negative correlations between NH4+-N, TN, and B-IBI indicated the B-IBI characterized well the influence of nitrogen pollution.

Improved method for benthic ecosystem health assessment by integrating chemical indexes into multiple biological indicator species—A case study of the Baiyangdian Lake, China

A comprehensive and scientific assessment of benthic ecosystem health is key to the rational selection of endogenous pollution reduction technologies for lakes. However, current assessments are mainly limited to biological indicators and ignore the actual benthic ecosystem situations, such as the impact of eutrophication and heavy metal pollution, which may lead to the one-sidedness of the evaluation results. In this study, taking Baiyangdian Lake, the largest shallow mesotrophic-eutrophic lake in the North China Plain, as an example, the chemical assessment index and biological integrity index were first combined to estimate the biological conditions, nutritional status and heavy metal pollution of lakes. The indicator system incorporated three biological assessments (benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI), submerged aquatic vegetation index of biological integrity (SAV-IBI) and microbial index of biological integrity (M-IBI)) and three chemical assessments (dissolved oxygen (DO), comprehensive trophic level index (TLI) and index of geoaccumulation (Igeo)). Twenty-three attributes of B-IBI, fourteen attributes of SAV-IBI and twelve attributes of M-IBI were screened by range, responsiveness, and redundancy tests to keep the core metrics that were significantly correlated with disturbance gradients or showed strong discriminatory power between reference and impaired sites. The assessment results of B-IBI, SAV-IBI, and M-IBI showed significant differences in the response to anthropogenic activities and seasonal change, among which the submerged plants showed more significant seasonal differences. It is difficult to reach a comprehensive conclusion regarding the benthic ecosystem health status based on a single biological community. In comparison with biological indicators, the score of chemical indicators is relatively low. DO, TLI and Igeo provide an essential supplement for the benthic ecosystem health assessment of lakes with eutrophication and heavy metal pollution problems. Using the new integrated assessment method, the benthic ecosystem health of Baiyangdian Lake was rated as fair, especially the northern parts of the lake adjacent to the inflow mouth of the Fu River, which were in poor condition, indicating that the lake has experienced anthropogenic disturbance, resulting in eutrophication, heavy metal pollution and biological community degradation. Whether it's spring or summer, the integrated assessment method provides a more plausible and comprehensive view of benthic ecosystem health under the pressure of increasing human activities and changing habitat and hydrological conditions, overcoming the narrow perspective and uncertainties of the single-index method. Thus, it can assist lake managers in providing technical support for ecological indication and restoration.

A Simple Index of Lake Ecosystem Health Based on Species-Area Models of Macrobenthos

An effective biological index should meet two criteria: (1) the selected parameters have clear relationships with ecosystem health and can be measured simply by standard methods and (2) reference conditions can be defined objectively and simply. Species richness is a widely used estimate of ecosystem condition, although it is increased by nutrient enrichment, a common disturbance. Based on macrobenthos data from 91 shallow Yangtze lakes disconnected from the mainstem, we constructed an observed species (SO)-area (A) model to predict expected species richness (SE), and then developed an observed to expected index (O/E-SA) by calculating the SO/SE ratio. We then compared O/E-SA with three other commonly used indices regarding their ability to discriminate cultivated and urban lakes: (1) River Invertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS; O/E-RF), (2) Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (B-IBI), and (3) Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT). O/E-SA showed significant positive linear relationships with O/E-RF, B-IBI and ASPT. Quantile regressions showed that O/E-SA and O/E-RF had hump-shape relationships with most eutrophication metrics, whereas B-IBI and ASPT had no obvious relationships. Only O/E-SA, O/E50 and B-IBI significantly discriminated cultivated from urban lakes. O/E-SA had comparable or higher performance with O/E-RF, B-IBI and ASPT, but was much simpler. Therefore, O/E-SA is a simple and reliable index for lake ecosystem health bioassessment. Finally, a framework was proposed for integrated biological assessment of Yangtze-disconnected lakes.

Macroinvertebrate-based index of biotic integrity for assessing the ecological condition of Lake Wanchi, Ethiopia

Background: Lake Wanchi is one of the Ethiopian lakes that have huge ecological, socio-economic and aesthetic value. This study was conducted to assess the ecological condition of Lake Wanchi using the macroinvertebrate-based index of biotic integrity between September 2016 and should 2017.Methods: Four sampling sites (LWS 1, LWS 2, LWS 3, and LWS 4) were purposively selected. A rapid bioassessment protocol criterion was accustomed to categorize the sites. About 1249 macroinvertebrate individuals were collected using the D-frame net with a mesh size of 500µm. Physico-chemical analysis was also done to assess the link between the benthic macroinvertebrate structure and environmental factors within the system.Results: The benthic index of biotic integrity ranged from 12.54 to 100 and also the sites were categorized into three quality ranks: LWS 1 and 3 as fair, LWS 2 as good, and LWS 4 as very good. Conclusions: The study confirmed that Lake Wanchi was largely influenced by agricultural and other anthropogenic factors. This study concluded that the benthic index of biotic integrity is an appropriate tool for water quality and ecological assessment in the lakes.

Response of macroinvertebrate community to water quality factors and aquatic ecosystem health assessment in a typical river in Beijing, China

Healthy aquatic ecosystems can offer basic ecological services for the sustainable development of humans and society. Water quality greatly influences the macroinvertebrate community in aquatic ecosystems and can alter the aquatic ecosystem's health status. However, the quantitative relationship between macroinvertebrate community and water quality factors in rivers remains unclear, particularly in urban rivers, which are strongly affected by human activities. Therefore, a new framework for the quantitative analysis between macroinvertebrate community and key water quality driving factors was developed in the study, meanwhile, the aquatic ecosystem health conditions were evaluated and validated by different methods. The framework was applied to a typical urban river, the North Canal River, which is regarded as the “mother river” of Beijing. Combined with the redundancy analysis (RDA) and the threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN), the water quality driving factors and their indicator species were identified and the corresponding response threshold was determined. Based on the benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI), the multi-metric rapid bioassessment method, and the biological monitoring working party (BMWP) score, the aquatic ecosystem health condition in the basin was comprehensively evaluated. The results show that fluoride, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen and total phosphorus were the key water quality driving factors influencing the community structure of macroinvertebrates. Four indicator species of ammonia-nitrogen were identified by the TITAN method with a threshold range of 1.09–6.94 mg L−1, and three indicator species of total phosphorus were identified with a threshold range of 0.48–1.27 mg L−1. According to the results of the aquatic ecosystem health assessment, the river ecosystem was generally unhealthy and the upstream was better than downstream; the health condition in the mountainous areas of Changping district was the best, while that in Chaoyang district and the central city area was the worst. The framework could provide a strong basis for ecological restoration and pollution control of the urban rivers and become an important tool for the rehabilitation of aquatic ecosystems.

Quantitative Analysis of the Correlation Between Macrobenthos Community and Water Environmental Factors and Aquatic Ecosystem Health Assessment in the North Canal River Basin of Beijing

Macrobenthos can reflect the cumulative effect of various ecological threats on the water environment and are closely related to the health of river ecosystems. In this study, taking the North Canal River basin, a typical basin in Beijing, as an example, ecological data from 34 stations were investigated in the summer of 2015. Characteristics of the macrobenthos communities were analyzed, and driving environmental factors were identified using typical correspondence analysis. Thresholds and response species of those driving environmental factors were conducted using the thresholds indicator taxa analysis (TITAN). In this study, the health status of the river ecosystem was evaluated by the multi-metrics method and benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI). The benthic community was dominated by pollution-tolerant aquatic insects and mollusks, with a low-level Shannon-wiener diversity index between 0-1.01; fluoride, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen, and total phosphorus were driving environmental factors influencing the community structure of macrobenthos. Indicator species of ammonia-nitrogen were identified by the TITAN in the North Canal River basin with a threshold range of 1.09-6.94 mg·L-1; three indicator species of total phosphorus were identified with a threshold range of 0.48-1.27 mg·L-1, which were all positive response species. According to the health assessment, the river ecosystem in the North Canal River basin was generally unhealthy, and the upstream ecosystem was better than that downstream; the health conditions in the mountainous areas of Changping district were the best, whereas those in Chaoyang and central city districts were the worst. This study can provide a basis for ecological restoration and pollution control of rivers and also provide a reference for the water ecological civilization construction in other cities.

Health assessment of important tributaries of Three Georges Reservoir based on the benthic index of biotic integrity

China’s Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) is the largest water conservancy project in the world, and plays a significant role in flood control and water transport. To study the health status of the tributaries of TGR, we set up 175 sampling sites, including 15 reference sites and 160 impaired sites on 36 important tributaries of TGR, and collected zoobenthos at these sampling sites. We selected 26 candidate metrics, analyzed them in terms of the distribution range, discriminant ability and correlation. Eight core metrics (i.e., total taxa, ephemerida + trichoptera + plecoptera taxa, diptera taxa, ephemerida%, trichoptera%, Shannon–Wiener diversity index, dominant species% and filter%) were identified, and then the benthic indexes of biological integrity (B-IBI) was established. The B-IBI was then used to evaluate the ecological status of 36 tributaries of TGR. Among all the sampling sites, “excellent”, “good”, “fair”, “poor” and “very poor” accounted for 5.14%, 13.14%, 28.00%, 44.57%, and 9.14%, respectively. Among all streams and rivers, “excellent”, “good” “fair”, “poor” and “very poor” accounted for 5.56%, 41.67%, 50.00%, 2.78%, and 0%, respectively, showing a general good condition for all tributaries. There was a significant difference in health status between tributaries in the TGR dam and those in its upper reaches. The B-IBI established in this study can capture the health status of 36 important tributaries of TGR. This study does not only enrich the practice of health assessment using B-IBI, but also provides some reference for the evaluation of similar rivers across the world.

Microbial communities can predict the ecological condition of headwater streams.

Humanity's reliance on clean water and the ecosystem services provided makes identifying efficient and effective ways to assess the ecological condition of streams ever more important. We used high throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA region to explore relationships between stream microbial communities, environmental attributes, and assessments of stream ecological condition. Bacteria and archaea in microbial community samples collected from the water column and from stream sediments during spring and summer were used to replicate standard assessments of ecological condition performed with benthic macroinvertebrate collections via the Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (BIBI). Microbe-based condition assessments were generated at different levels of taxonomic resolution from phylum to OTU (Operational Taxonomic Units) in order to understand appropriate levels of taxonomic aggregation. Stream sediment microbial communities from both spring and summer were much better than the water column at replicating BIBI condition assessment results. Accuracies were as high as 100% on training data used to build the models and up to 80% on validation data used to assess predictions. Assessments using all OTUs usually had the highest accuracy on training data, but were lower on validation data due to overfitting. In contrast, assessments at the order-level had similar performance accuracy for validation data, and a reduced subset of orders also performed well, suggesting the method could be generalized to other watersheds. Subsets of the important orders responded similarly to environmental gradients compared to the entire community, where strong shifts in community structure occurred for known aquatic stressors such as pH, dissolved organic carbon, and nitrate nitrogen. The results suggest the stream microbes may be useful for assessing the ecological condition of streams and especially useful for stream restorations where many eukaryotic taxa have been eliminated due to prior degradation and are unable to recolonize.

The first statewide stream macroinvertebrate bioassessment in Washington State with a relative risk and attributable risk analysis for multiple stressors

We report results from the first statewide assessment of biological health in perennial streams in Washington State. Using a probabilistic sampling survey design, we were able to make unbiased estimates of biological condition of macroinvertebrate communities throughout the state based on 346 sites sampled from 2009 to 2012. Results from randomly sampled sites were classified as either good, fair, poor in comparison with 75 regional reference sites that were sampled concurrently. We determined that approximately 34 percent of stream kilometers assessed were in poor biological condition as measured with a multi-metric index, the Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity. Additionally, we evaluated a variety of chemical and physical habitat stressors known to negatively influence macroinvertebrate communities and determined that poor substrate conditions were the most prevalent and important stressors impacting stream macroinvertebrates, with relative bed stability and percent sand/fines being the most prevalent. A relative risk/attributable risk analysis suggests that improving physical habitat conditions in streams, most notably a reduction in percent sand/fines, will have the greatest impact for improving biological condition for macroinvertebrate communities. It is estimated that approximately 60% of stream kilometers now classified as in poor biological condition in Washington could be improved by reducing the amount of percent sand/fines in the substrate. These results are consistent with those obtained from EPA’s national stream surveys and suggest that poor habitat conditions are the most prevalent stressors impacting stream macroinvertebrates in Washington State.

Application of Adapted Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (B-IBI) for River Ecosystem Health Assessment in Zhanghe River Watershed, China

In order to evaluate the ecological health condition of Zhanghe River Watershed, an adapted Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (B-IBI) was developed. Macro-invertebrates were sampled at 12 monitoring stations which were grouped into two condition categories (reference and impaired stations) according to the level of degradation. A total of 47 benthic macroinvertebrates taxa were identified, in which aquatic insects 33 taxa, Mollusca 8, Annalida 3 and Crustacea 3 taxa. Based on macro-invertebrate assemblages characters of this area, 18 candidate biological metrics in four categories, including taxonomic richness, community composition, pollution tolerance, trophic guild, and value distribution, were chosen. In which, four metrics were excluded because of low values or narrow distribution range. Discriminatory power between reference and impaired stations was analysed using box-plots, and six metrics were excluded because the medians of the box-plot inside the inter quartile range. Of all the rest eight metrics, four were not suitable for B-IBI index system because of their high Pearson correlation (| r | 0.75). Finally, total taxa, percentage of Crustacea and Mollusca, percentage of tolerant taxa and percentage of predators were screened out to form a B-IBI index system. Ratio scoring method for B-IBI index was used to get a uniform score. Evaluation criterion was established based on the 25 percentiles value of reference stations. Assessment results using B-IBI showed 5 of sampling stations were in ‘healthy’ and ‘sub-healthy’ state, 3 were in ‘fair’ state, and 4 were in ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ state of the whole watershed.

Therefore, the phytoplankton communities were investigated three times in the Nanwan Reservoir, a water supply reservoir in the Huaihe River Basin in 2016. An ecological integrity assessment was conducted based on the phytoplankton biological integrity using factor analysis. The results showed that the number of phytoplankton species in the three investigations changed marginally, but there was a clear seasonal difference among the species. The density of phytoplankton was the highest in September and the lowest in March, but the biomass was the highest in March and the lowest in September. The factor analysis was used to further analyze and assess the ecological status. Four common factors were identified in the factor analysis. Among them, factor 1 characterizes the characteristics and ability of the community to resist pollution, factor 2 characterizes the diversity of the community, factor 3 characterizes the richness of the community, and factor 4 characterizes the eutrophication of the water body. The factor scores showed obvious difference in different months. The ecological condition in March was the best. Further, from the spatial point of view, the water ecological condition of the area with high population density was very poor. The factor score better reflects the relative size of the water ecological status of the reservoir at different times and locations. This indicates that the assessment of biological integrity based on factor analysis is suitable for the Nanwan Reservoir and can be applied to the ecological assessment of other water bodies. 参考文献 相似文献 引证文献

Protocols for Studying Wet Weather Impacts and Urbanization Patterns

This research study explores the relationship of urbanization to ecology in the wadeable streams of developing watersheds and describes a protocol, which urban stormwater management agencies can apply in their jurisdiction, to prevent the severe ecologic deterioration that presently occurs in urban streams as a watershed develops. The protocol comprises an 8-step process that involves data collection and analysis integrated with mathematical modeling of runoff from existing and proposed urban development to determine how biologic health indices such as the benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI) or Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera (EPT) richness responds to urbanization of a watershed. Stormwater managers can apply this protocol in their areas of jurisdiction to assist them in developing urban runoff management rules and design criteria with some assurance that the resulting development will minimize negative impacts on the ecology of receiving streams. In addition to the full protocol, a simple protocol is also provided for municipal agencies to use that does not require extensive data collection. Classification efficiency of the B-IBI comparing water body size classes in Chesapeake Bay

The Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (B-IBI) was developed and is currently employed for environmental assessment in Chesapeake Bay. The index consists of a variety of benthic community metrics (e.g. abundance, biomass, diversity, stress tolerance groups, etc.) scored by thresholds applied to seven benthic community habitats (tidal freshwater, oligohaline, low mesohaline, high mesohaline mud, high mesohaline sand, polyhaline mud, and polyhaline sand) This index was verified as being a sensitive and robust tool for summarizing the status of benthic communities. In our study we tested the classification efficiency of the index using new benthic data by characterizing each sample a priori as degraded or undegraded using criteria of sediment contaminant levels, bioassays and bottom dissolved oxygen levels. A primary objective of our study was to test the classification efficiency of the B-IBI in small water bodies connected to larger water bodies of the mainstems of the large rivers of Chesapeake Bay, as well as the efficiency of the index over time (1990 through 2009). The B-IBI was affected by the size of the water body, e.g., index accuracy was higher for water bodies in small watersheds in lower salinity habitats, whereas large water bodies of the mainstem of rivers were better classified by the B-IBI in habitats with higher salinities. Across the seven benthic habitat types overall correct classification was moderate to low and lower for correctly classifying undegraded sites. In general the index metrics showed some deficiencies that suggest improvements could be made by recalibrating existing metric thresholds or selecting new suitable metrics.

Health assessment on rivers in Shanghai City using benthic index of biotic integrity

据20112013年对上海市31条河流底栖动物的调查结果,对31个生物参数进行分布范围、判别能力以及相关性等进行分析,确定构建上海市河流底栖动物完整性指数(B-IBI)的4个参数:(寡毛类动物+蛭纲)数量百分比、耐污类群分类单元数、双翅目数量百分比和集食者分类单元数百分比.采用比值法统一量纲,将各个生物参数分值加和得到上海市河流B-IBI值.利用构建的B-IBI对上海市31条河流健康状况进行评价,结果表明:31条河流中,有4条河流处于健康状态,8条河流处于亚健康状态,9条河流处于一般状态,8条河流处于较差状态,2条河流处于极差状态;远郊河流健康状态最好,近郊次之,市区最差.;Form 2011 to 2013, benthic macro-invertebrate assemblages were sampled from 31 rivers in Shanghai City. The analyses of the range of index value distribution, judgment ability and Pearson correlation were analyzed on 31 candidate metrics. Four biological metrics including relative percentage of Oligochaeta and Hirudinea, number of tolerant taxa, percentage of Diptera number and percentage of collector taxa richness were selected for establishing Benthic Integrated Biotic Index (B-IBI).The values of metric were calculated by ratio scoring method, and B-IBI was obtained by combining all those 4 indices.According to these established criteria, results showed that among 31 rivers of Shanghai City, 4 rivers were healthy, 4 rivers were sub-healthy, 9 rivers were good-fair, 8 rivers were fair, 2 rivers were poor. The health status was best in rural rivers, followed by suburban rivers, and worst in downtown rivers.

Application of a benthic index of biotic integrity for the ecosystem health assessment of Lake Taihu

依据2010年春季至2012年秋季,太湖32个样点的底栖动物和环境变量共11次的季节性调查结果,采用干扰程度最小系统法定义构建底栖动物生物完整性指数的参照系统,提出了确定参照系统的4个基本条件,进而按非湖心区和湖心区两个生态区分别构建太湖底栖动物完整性指数(LTB-IBI).通过对候选生物参数的分布范围筛选、判别能力分析、与理化因子的相关性和参数间的冗余分析,获得了非湖心区LTB-IBI的4个构成指数:总分类单元数、Simpson多样性指数、前3位优势单元%和BMWP指数,以及湖心区LTB-IBI的5个构成指数:总分类单元数、Simpson多样性指数、甲壳+软体分类单元数、前3位优势单元%和BMWP指数.采用比值法统一构成指数量纲,分别构建了非湖心区和湖心区LTBIBI指数,评价太湖水生态健康的等级.2010-2012年,太湖生态健康总体上呈现逐步提升的趋势.影响太湖底栖动物完整性的重要环境变量是水体中的氮含量.研究表明,连续观察数据可较大程度上提高太湖LTB-IBI指数的可靠性和评价结果的合理性.;In order to develop a benthic index of biotic integrity for Lake Taihu (LTB-IBI), we seasonally carried out investigation on macroinvertebrate assemblages and their environments at 32 sites in Lake Taihu from spring, 2010 to autumn, 2012. Based on the investigation, we used the method of least disturbed condition and four criteria to define reference sites. LTB-IBI was developed separately for non-central region and central region of Lake Taihu. Metrics were stepwise examined for distribution analysis, discriminating power analysis, relationship with environmental variables and redundancy analysis. The core metrics of LTB-IBI for non-central region were total taxa richness, Simpson diversity index, 3 dominant taxon% and BMWP score. One more metric, i. e. (Crustacea + Mollusca) taxa for central region. LTB-IBI value for non-central region and central region were respectively obtained by summing up core metrics, which were transformed into a uniform score by ratio score method. Health condition of Lake Taihu was found to improve gradually from 2010 to 2012. Total nitrogen was suggested as the major factor affected LTB-IBI. Our results suggest that long-term data would benefit the development of a robust LTB-IBI and its use in practice of Lake Taihu health assessment.

Tracking environmental stress gradients using three biotic integrity indices: Advantages of a locally-developed traits-based approach

Estuarine and coastal ecosystems are productive and functionally diverse areas that provide a wide range of societal benefits. Along with human exploitative uses comes an array of anthropogenic disturbances that can affect ecological integrity, including changes to the composition and resilience of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. To understand the responses of ecological communities to anthropogenic disturbance and to manage and mitigate effects, indices for assessing the ecological integrity of estuarine and coastal waters have proliferated worldwide. Using data from 84 intertidal sites in Auckland, New Zealand, we evaluated the suitability of two widely used measures of ecological integrity that were developed in USA and Europe, respectively: the Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (B-IBI) and the AZTI's Marine Biotic Index (AMBI). We then developed a local index based on macrofaunal traits and verified its utility using independent data from >100 additional sites. The local traits based index (TBI), constructed from the richness of macrofaunal taxa in seven functional groups, responded to changes in sediment mud percentage and heavy metal contaminant concentration gradients below international guidelines. The TBI performed better than the indices developed overseas, probably because they were designed to track organic enrichment and hypoxia, which are not the predominant stressors in New Zealand at present. The TBI successfully tracked the stressors that were the most relevant locally and indicated the relative levels of within-group taxonomic richness at various sites. As within-group richness is a component of functional redundancy and ecological resilience, the TBI offers a trifecta of simplicity, robustness and meaningfulness that will facilitate management.

Associations of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages with Environmental Variables in the Upper Clear Creek Watershed, California

Benthic macroinvertebrates are integral components of stream ecosystems and are often used to assess the ecological integrity of streams. We sampled streams in the upper Clear Creek drainage in the Klamath—Siskiyou Ecoregion of northwestern California in fall 2004 (17 sites) and 2005 (original 17 plus 4 new sites) with the objectives of documenting the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages supported by the streams in the area, determining how those assemblages respond to environmental variables, assessing the biological condition of the streams using a benthic index of biotic integrity (IBI), and understanding the assemblages in the context of biodiversity of the ecoregion. We collected both reach-wide (RW) and targeted-riffle (TR) macroinvertebrate samples at each site. The macroinvertebrate assemblages were diverse, with over 150 genera collected for each sampling protocol. The macroinvertebrate assemblages appeared to be most responsive to a general habitat gradient based on stream size, gradient, flow, and dominance of riffles. A second important habitat gradient was based on elevation and dominance of riffles. A gradient in water quality based on concentrations of dissolved ions and metals was also important. Models based on these 3 gradients had Spearman's rank correlations with macroinvertebrate taxonomic composition of 0.60 and 0.50 for the TR and RW samples, respectively. The majority (>50%) of the sites were in good or very good biological condition based on IBI scores. The diversity of macroinvertebrate assemblages is associated with the diversity of habitats available in the Klamath—Siskiyou Ecoregion. Maintaining the aquatic habitats in good condition is important in itself but is also vital to maintaining biodiversity in this diverse and unique ecoregion.

Relationships between the Seasonal Variations of Macroinvertebrates, and Land Uses for Biomonitoring in the Xitiaoxi River Watershed, China

AbstractThe impacts of differences in watershed land uses, and differences in seasonality on benthic macroinvertebrate communities, were evaluated in 12 stream sites within the Xitiaoxi River watershed, China, from April 2009 to January 2010. The composition of macroinvertebrate community differed significantly among three land use types. Forested sites were characterized by high taxa richness, diversity and the benthic‐index of biotic integrity (B‐IBI), while farmland and urban disturbed stream sites presented contrary patterns. The percentage of urban land use, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus were the major drivers for the variations. The land use related water quality stress gradients of the four sampling seasons were determined by means of four independent Principal Component Analyses. The responses of macroinvertebrate community metrics, to anthropogenic stressors, were explored using Spearman Rank Correlation analyses. All the selected metrics, including total numbers of taxa, numbers of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera taxa, percentage of non‐insect abundance, percentage of scrapers abundance, Pielou’s evenness index, Simpson diversity index, and the Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity were correlated significantly with environmental gradients (PC1) in autumn. In other seasons such correlations were less pronounced. Our results imply that autumn is the optimal time to sample macroinvertebrate communities, and to conduct water quality biomonitoring in this subtropical watershed. Application of multiple index development approaches to benthic invertebrate data from the Virginian Biogeographic Province, USA

Previous work had indicated that the Virginian Province Index did not perform well in a smaller estuarine complex. While it was hoped that the existing Chesapeake Bay Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity, with its greater number of metrics and habitat separation would be more adaptable, this index also did not perform well outside of Chesapeake Bay. In this study we assembled additional metrics and applied different methods of index compilation to explore the indices relative strengths and weaknesses. Three different approaches were utilized – two multimetric indices (Chesapeake Bay IBI and the Mebane IBI) and a statistical logistic regression technique. The data were subdivided by habitat (salinity and grain size), and indices compiled using the same initial group of benthic metrics. Each approach was examined for its classification accuracy for both reference and impaired sites for the entire Virginian Province. The Chesapeake Bay IBI approach did not perform well in this study. In contrast, another multimetric approach, the Mebane IBI approach, performed well, as did the statistical logistic regression approach. Both techniques have promise for index development and could be useful in applying a biological condition gradient to estuaries.
