CPA Evolution and Curriculum Revolution: Building Value in the Accounting Profession Through CPA and CISA Dual Certification

ABSTRACT Accounting programs are tasked with reviewing the extent of curriculum modifications necessary due to CPA Evolution. We believe CPA Evolution creates an opportunity for accounting programs to build value and marketability for students through a specific dual certification that pairs the CPA certification with the Information Systems and Controls (ISC) Discipline, and the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certification (i.e., CPA-ISC/CISA dual certification). We discuss benefits of this dual certification to students, programs, and other stakeholders; key background information; and CISA exam and CPA-ISC Discipline exam content overlap. Additionally, we provide a curriculum framework at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to coordinate both foundational knowledge for all CPA-bound students and specialized knowledge for the CPA-ISC/CISA dual certification. Finally, we discuss constraints programs may encounter when providing a CPA-ISC/CISA dual certification preparatory path and ways programs can address them.

Career Advancement Insights from Certified Pharmacy Technicians: Enhanced Opportunities for the Pharmacy Technician Workforce

Sustainable career advancement opportunities for pharmacy technicians will be a critical part of patient-centered community pharmacy environments as the role of the pharmacist provider expands. (1) To determine the impact of a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board pharmacy (PTCB) certification on career advancement and professional growth metrics; (2) To assess technicians' role in advanced pharmacy services before and after certification; and (3) To identify changes in pharmacist services when a certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) was added to the provider team. A 73-question web-based survey was distributed to all PTCB certified pharmacy technicians (CPhT) in the United States, Washing D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands. The survey was distributed by PTCB in April 2021 with a 28-day collection period. The survey included multiple choice, rating scale, and free text questions centered on five domains: Practice experience, Career aspirations, Compensation, Pharmacy practice motivations, and Impact of COVID-19 pandemic. 23,007 CPhTs completed the survey. Respondents were primarily female (85.5%), age 30-39 (32.8%), and ≥ 10 years CPhT experience (42.8%). The majority of respondents cited improvement of patient health (77.4%), career advancement opportunities (53.5%), the ability to expand their role during emergencies (e.g., COVID-19) (52.6%), and future career advancement opportunities (51.7%) as benefits of CPhT certification. Increases in job responsibility after certification included changes occurring in roles related to clinical pharmacy services, patient education, preventive health services, provider communication, and staff training. Respondents agreed that PTCB-certification allowed for the expansion of pharmacists' services where they practiced, including clinical services (18.5%), patient education (18.3%), and preventive health services (18.1%). CPhT's value certification for its benefits on career advancement, personal growth, and salary enhancement. Affirmation of skill and training through certification is also recognized to positively influence patient care and the pharmacy's ability to provide advanced patient care and services.

Many producers in this village do not fully understand the benefits of halal certification, which may reduce their products' competitiveness in both local and international markets. This study aims to analyze the importance of halal certification in increasing product competitiveness in the village. The method used includes surveys and interviews with local producers as well as secondary data analysis from various related sources. The results show that halal certification can increase consumer trust, expand markets, and improve product quality. Therefore, halal certification is an important strategy that local producers need to adopt to compete in broader markets.

This research method is descriptive with a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques carried out using library study techniques and field studies, The informants in this study are 1) Lecturers who have passed the certification, 2) Head of the Islamic Education Study Program, 3) Students of the Islamic Education Study Program. The results showed that the implementation of lecturer certification in general is not only limited to fulfilling the obligations of the Lecturer Workload (BKD) but also an effort to improve the quality expected by the Lecturer Certification Program, and lecturers who receive certification benefits support efforts to improve the quality of learning and performance

Feasibility and effectiveness of global intact forest landscape protection through forest certification: the conservation burden of intact forest landscapes

Intact Forest Landscapes (IFLs) are defined as forested areas of at least 500 km2 that show no signs of remotely sensed human activity. They are considered to be of high conservation value due to their role in maintaining biodiversity and mitigating climate change. In 2014, the members of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), one of the major global certification schemes for responsible forest management, took a conservation stand by restricting logging in FSC-certified IFLs. However, this move raised concerns about the economic viability of FSC-certified logging in these areas. To address these challenges, in 2022, FSC proposed an integrated landscape approach, considering local conditions and stakeholders’ needs to balance IFL protection, economic sustainability, and community interests. Here, we leverage publicly available management unit (MU) data, to provide a global quantitative overview of IFLs designated for timber production. We use the concept of ‘conservation burden’ for the extent that MUs overlap with IFLs, representing the impact that IFL protection has on forest management operations if logging is disallowed. Our data indicates that currently FSC-certified MUs affect 0.6% of global IFLs. Too restrictive policies for logging in IFLs may discourage FSC-certification in global IFLs. Considering the environmental and social benefits of FSC certification, it warrants careful examination whether the benefits of protecting a limited subset of FSC-certified IFLs outweighs the cost of potentially reduced growth of the total FSC-certified area. Our data can provide a basis to facilitate stakeholder engagement for landscape-level IFL management.

Determinants of Micro and Small Business Actors on the Motivation to Register for Free Halal Certification in Bondowoso Regency

Introduction: Government regulations on halal products, especially in the 2021 Job Creation Law, have been stipulated in the Halal Product Guarantee Law, this is an important factor for producers in the business sector related to halal products, especially since there is a free halal certification program. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to measure the motivation of micro and small business actors in Bondowoso Regency towards registering for free halal certification. Method: This study uses a quantitative approach with multiple linear regression analysis which aims to test the correlation of the variables of Government Regulation (X1), Halal Lifestyle (X2), Perceived Benefits of Halal Certification (X3), Business Competitiveness (X4), Product Safety and Hygiene (X5), to Motivation for Free Halal Certification Registration (Y1). Results: The results showed that government regulations, halal lifestyle, and product safety and hygiene had no significant partial effect on the motivation to register for free halal certification. Meanwhile, the perceived benefits of halal certification and business competitiveness have a partially significant effect on the motivation to register for free halal certification. However, these 5 variables simultaneously affect the motivation to register for free halal certification so it is worthy of being a construct of this study. Implications: The research will provide an overview of the relevant approaches that must be taken to attract micro and small business actors to register for free halal certification.

Towards Sustainable Urban Transformation: The Role of LEED Certification in Istanbul's Future and Economy

Istanbul, a city with a rich history and vibrant culture, faces the imminent threat of a catastrophic earthquake due to its proximity to the North Anatolian Earthquake Fault. In response, the Turkish government has initiated a sweeping urban transformation led by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. This initiative aims to not only rebuild the city but also to enhance its resilience to earthquakes and environmental challenges. Central to this transformation is the adoption of green building principles, particularly LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. LEED provides a comprehensive framework for sustainable building design, construction, and operation, encompassing categories such as Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation, and Regional Priority. This paper examines the economic and future considerations of enforcing green certification during Istanbul's urban transformation. Through a detailed analysis of the costs and benefits of LEED certification across different categories, as well as alternative approaches to sustainability, this paper aims to provide a holistic view of the implications for Istanbul's economic landscape and long-term prospects. By integrating environmental sustainability into its urban renewal efforts, Istanbul has the opportunity to not only mitigate the risks of earthquakes but also to emerge as a model for sustainable, environmentally conscious urban development. This paper seeks to highlight the importance of green certification in shaping Istanbul's urban landscape for generations to come, with a focus on economic considerations, environmental impacts, and broader implications for the city's future.

The role of new green construction in neighborhood change and gentrification

Recent research has highlighted the potential for green certification to contribute to gentrification in urban areas. This occurs as the adoption of a reductionist sustainability planning language can turn green-certified houses into luxury goods that attract primarily White, college-educated, and pro-environmental households, who may replace existing long-term residents, particularly lower-income residents and racial minorities, in core urban areas. This study aims to assess the extent to which the supply of green-certified units affects neighborhood change and gentrification. Using housing market transaction data from Central Virginia’s Multiple Listing Service and socioeconomic data from the U.S. Census Bureau, we employ a difference-in-differences approach to analyze the differential effect of new construction of market-rate, EarthCraft-certified units in Richmond Metro Area. Our results show that neighborhoods with new green-certified units experience statistically significant increases in population growth, new construction, and house prices. We observe trends that suggest potential negative impacts on minorities. However, these observed trends have not reached statistical significance. Our study provides evidence that green housing can contribute to the conditions that make residential zones ripe for gentrification, thus, highlighting the need to balance the benefits of green certification with the potential negative impacts on disadvantaged groups.

Method Study to Compare a CAAHEP Accredited Advanced Cardiac Sonography Program With Two Pilot Advanced Sonography Programs

Objective: The aim was to review the value of advanced sonography programs and to quantitatively evaluate the educational outcomes of two pilot advanced sonography programs (e.g., vascular and perinatal) with a well-established Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Advanced Cardiac Sonography Program. Materials and Methods: The first phase of this sequential mixed-method study was to conduct a document analysis and extracting themes from published literature to highlight the content, benefits, and development of advanced sonography programs. The second phase was to implement a one-group pre-test post-test design to address the population, intervention, control, and outcomes (PICO) question: Among a sample of 12 participants (P), what are the effects of advanced programs (I) in cardiac, vascular, and perinatal sonography (C) on students’ composite knowledge, across 12 course levels and one clinical internship (O)? Results: The document analysis identified four latent themes: (1) the benefits of sonographer certification; (2) the need for sonographers to continuously develop their knowledge and skills; (3) the need to develop sonographers in diverse specialties of medicine; and (4) the need to develop new credentials for advanced practice sonographers. The effects of the three advanced sonography programs on the composite knowledge of the graduates were impressive, indicated by Hedges’ g = 2.02 (moderate) to 2.71 (large) effect size. Triangulation of data revealed that the four latent themes were consistent with the evaluation of the content and outcomes of the advanced cardiac, perinatal, and vascular sonography programs. Conclusion: Consistency between theory and practice and similar educational outcomes were achieved when comparing a well-established Advanced Cardiac Sonography Program with two pilot programs in advanced perinatal sonography and advanced vascular sonography. As this is the first comparison of this type, distinct conclusions that apply to all allied health programs cannot be drawn. The data collection in this study is a set of outcome measures that fits into a larger picture of academic success for these programs.

Halal Certification Literacy for MSME Enterprises 'Aisyiyah Tranting Market Sipirok

MSME business actors have a significant role in the Indonesian economy. However, there are still various obstacles faced by MSME business actors, including those related to halal certification literacy. Based on data from the Halal Product Guarantee Organizing Agency (BPJPH), only around 2.8% of MSMEs in Indonesia have been halal certified. The low level of halal certification among MSMEs is caused by a lack of understanding and literacy regarding the procedures and benefits of halal certification. Sipirok Market is one of the traditional markets in Indonesia with the majority of traders selling various food and beverage products, but the majority do not have halal certification. Therefore, it is important to carry out halal certification literacy activities aimed at MSMEs in 'Aisyiyah Branch of Sipirok Market. Data collection was carried out through focus group discussions, observations and questionnaires. Based on an initial survey conducted on 25 MSMEs at Sipirok Market, it was discovered that as many as 18 MSMEs (72%) had not received halal certification from BPJPH. They generally still do not understand the procedures and requirements needed to obtain halal certification. Apart from that, they also don't know the benefits that can be obtained by having halal certification for the products they sell. Based on the results of community service activities, it can be concluded that halal certification literacy for MSME business actors in the Sipirok Market Branch is still relatively low.

The MSC approach for developing harvest strategies and harvest control rules for Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs)

Well-designed and robust harvest strategies are a key governance tool to achieve long term sustainability of target stocks. In some fisheries, however, such as those governed by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs), the development and adoption of harvest strategies can be challenging. Seafood eco-labelling programs, such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), can be one way of incentivising fisheries to advocate for the adoption of harvest strategies and harvest control rules (HCRs). Here we illustrate the process through which the MSC Fisheries Standard was recently revised to guide the development and implementation of harvest strategies tested using management strategy evaluation, with particular focus on RFMOs. We identify three case studies that highlight the challenge of harvest strategy and HCR adoption: Indian Ocean skipjack tuna fisheries, Western and Central Pacific Ocean tuna fisheries, and North-East Atlantic mackerel fisheries. We discuss the problem statement that highlighted the challenges present when applying the previous MSC Fisheries Standard to stocks managed by RFMOs, and how the revised requirements within the MSC Fisheries Standard aim to overcome those challenges. These revised requirements provide an operational framework within the MSC Fisheries Standard for how RFMO-managed fisheries can implement ‘state-of-the-art' harvest strategies through management strategy evaluation. When applied by MSC certified fisheries, the new requirements are expected to contribute to delivering positive change with respect to implementing robust harvest strategies and HCRs across RFMOs, particularly in cases where there is a strong interest in the market benefits of certification.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Local and International Food Safety Standards in Small and Medium‐Sized Enterprises (SMEs) of Pakistan

Pakistani small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) have an important role and contribute less than other countries, yet their significance cannot be denied. The SME sector is confronted with multiple problems, including export issues because of the trust factor and least knowledge of the latest food safety standards, which have made it difficult to contribute to the GDP of the nation. Various standards such as Food Safety, HACCP, GGAP YUM GAP, MacDonald’s GAP, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 are being implemented in Pakistan for decades. This study was designed to highlight the critical issues of Pakistani SMEs in adopting management systems, i.e., food safety management systems. Data from 107 SMEs from different fields (beverages, baking, meat, postharvest processing, etc.) of Pakistan were collected through a detailed questionnaire and fed to SPSS V 26.0 for statistical illustration and articulation of the results. In this study, SME company profiles were analyzed and showed that 43% had 6–20 employees, 78.5% were manufacturers, and 68.2% were in business for 7–15 years. The focus was on sales growth (35.5%), profit growth (38.3%), return on assets (42.1%), gross revenues (47.7%), net cash flow (46.7%), customer satisfaction (47.7%), and customer satisfaction relative to competitors (46.7%). A total of 21.5% of SMEs implemented local standards, 23.4% implemented international standards, and 54.2% implemented both local and international standards. Certification benefits included establishing an effective system (62.6% agreed), understanding roles and responsibilities (76.6% agreed), and more efficient documentation (60.7% agreed). However, 29.9% and 24.3% of respondents found international standards such as FSSC 22000 and BRC challenging to apply in local organizations due to language and cost barriers. Above all, the current study implies the dire need for the development of Pakistan’s food safety management system (PFSMS) standard. The PFSMS should be easy to understand, low in cost, and highly applicable in different sectors of the SMEs in Pakistan.

Equity in capital raising? Empirical evidence from structured private placements

Packaged private placements (PPP) in Australia allow all eligible shareholders to purchase shares at the same price as offered to institutions in the private placement component of the offering. Announcement returns for PPPs are negative on average but are positive for offers with large placements to institutions. Returns also exhibit higher sensitivity to private placement size in PPPs than in traditional private placements, consistent with larger certification benefits accruing to PPP issuers. Retail shareholders experience 3.9 % ownership dilution in PPPs as compared to 8.6 % dilution in equivalent traditional private placements, and their participation is positively related to the size of the private placement component. Long run wealth related benefits associated with participation are present in all PPPs. Our results provide insights for regulators who wish to encourage companies to consider raising capital from small shareholders by utilizing offer structures that have been typically only accessible to sophisticated investors.

Indonesian consumers’ willingness to pay for organic coffee

The use of organic certification benefits farmers as well as the environment. Organic coffee farmers, on the other hand, face the challenge of determining how much consumers are willing to pay for the organic coffee they produce. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influence Indonesian consumers’ willingness to pay for organic coffee, as one of the indicators that influence consumer purchasing decision behavior. A structural equation model analysis was used to collect data by distributing questionnaires to a total of 766 respondents. The model was created by combining variables from the Theory of Planned Behavior and consumer awareness. This study was successful in demonstrating the direct impact of attitude, subjective norms, PBC, and consumer awareness on consumers’ willingness to pay for Indonesian organic coffee. On the other hand, health and environmental sustainability factors had an indirect influence on consumers’ willingness to pay for organic coffee. Meanwhile, regional development factors had no effect on consumers’ willingness to pay, either directly or indirectly.

Ketapang Regency, as a vital component in Indonesia's economic diversity, faces particular challenges in developing the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector. Despite its great potential, MSMEs in this region are constrained by the minimal understanding of the community, especially in remote areas, regarding the importance of business legality and halal certification. Therefore, the halal assistance team of Ketapang State Polytechnic made efforts with the aim of increasing the literacy of people in remote areas around business legality and the benefits of halal certification, creating a firmer foundation for inclusive local economic growth. In order to increase the economic independence of MSMEs in Ketapang Regency, the mentoring program carried out by the Ketapang State Polytechnic Halal Assistance team succeeded in achieving its main goal, namely increasing community literacy around business legality and halal certification. Positive results including increased community understanding, effectiveness of Business Identification Number (NIB) processing, and increased demand for halal certificates, show the positive impact of the program. However, challenges such as limited access to information and low education levels in some areas need to be addressed. By continuing to strengthen collaboration between educational institutions and communities, and maintaining sustainable efforts, it is hoped that this program can become an inspiring model for the development of MSMEs and local economic literacy in other areas.
