Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia Among Military Recruits Undergoing Basic Combat Training

ABSTRACT Introduction The first period of military service consists of a physically and mentally challenging basic combat training (BCT) program. Factors like demanding physical exercise, limited recovery time, and restricted diet choice and food intake may challenge iron intake and homeostasis in recruits undergoing BCT. Iron-deficient individuals may experience reduced work capacity, fatigue, weakness, frequent infections, and increased injury risk. Limited knowledge is available on the extent of this potential health risk among military recruits. The aim of the present study was to systematically review published studies on the prevalence and change in prevalence of anemia, iron deficiency (ID), and ID anemia (IDA) among recruits undergoing BCT. Materials and Methods Electronic searches were conducted in the databases Medline (Ovid), Embase (Embase.com), and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) from database inception up until April 16, 2024. Inclusion criteria were observational studies with both cross-sectional and observational longitudinal designs that examined the effects of BCT (intervention) on iron status (outcome) in military recruits (population). Extracted data were the number of participants (n), age, sex, country/population, BCT duration, and relevant measures of prevalence and changes in prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA (primary outcome) and physical performance, mood state, stress fractures, attrition rate, and nutritional supplements (secondary outcomes). The study quality and risk of bias were assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data and The National Institutes of Health Quality Assessment Tool for Before-After (Pre-Post) Studies With No Control Group. Meta-analyses were performed using restricted maximum-likelihood models, and the effect size was calculated as Cohen’s h with 95% CI. Results Twenty-two articles were systematically reviewed (n = 111,764 men and 12,650 women), and six of these papers (n = 388 men and 773 women) were included in the meta-analysis. There was a varying prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA among military recruits at the start of BCT. Results from meta-analyses showed negligible and nonsignificant effects of BCT on the prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA. The quality of the included cross-sectional studies ranging from fair to good, whereas a large proportion of the included longitudinal studies were classified as poor. No sign of publication bias was found. Conclusions The prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA in military recruits seems not to be affected by the completion of BCT shorter than 16 weeks, whereas the effects of longer BCT durations remain unclear. Even though body iron homeostasis seems unaffected, adequate energy and nutritional intake should remain a priority. Future research could focus on dietary interventions to determine the optimal diet among female recruits in specifically exposed populations.

Beyond binary: an integrated approach to assessing BOSIET competencies

ABSTRACT In the ever-evolving realm of offshore safety, the Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) program holds paramount importance in ensuring the proficiency of personnel in the challenging offshore setting. Traditionally, BOSIET assessments have utilised a binary evaluation, categorising individuals as either competent or incompetent. Nonetheless, this binary approach oversimplifies the multifaceted nature of offshore competencies. Our paper advocates for a paradigm shift towards an integrated assessment framework that transcends a simplistic pass/fail dichotomy. Drawing inspiration from diverse industries, our proposed approach encompasses a spectrum of competencies, recognising the varied skills requisite in offshore contexts. By embracing this integrated methodology, the BOSIET assessment endeavours to furnish a more nuanced comprehension of an individual's readiness for offshore duties. In conclusion, embracing this integrated approach ensures that offshore personnel are not solely proficient in technical aspects but also equipped with the diverse skills essential for navigating the intricacies of offshore operations.

The basic research support skills training program is part of an effort to support the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, where lecturers play a role in sharing their knowledge with the community. This program is conducted because lecturers have diverse needs related to skills that support article writing. The goal of the program we offer is to provide solutions for training participants to be more skilled in creating articles more efficiently with the optimal use of the Publish or Perish and Mendeley applications. The Publish or Perish application is a tool that can help researchers understand the extent to which research on their subject has been conducted. Meanwhile, the Mendeley application can assist researchers in citing more easily. The research results show that participants' knowledge of both applications has increased, and participants will use both applications in their future research. Therefore, this community service activity will contribute to the improvement of scientific article writing.

Effectiveness of an ultrasound basic cancer training program through on-site training and virtual case discussions in rural Tanzania: a proof-of-concept study.

Cancer rates are rising in low- and middle-income countries. While point-of-care ultrasound is now available globally and could serve to mitigate against this rise, its use in diagnosing cancers is inconsistent in lower-resourced healthcare contexts. This proof-of-concept study investigates the feasibility of an ultrasound training concept in a low-resource setting. It evaluates whether this educational concept led to improved knowledge and application of ultrasound diagnostics, cancer screening and staging and patient care. The curriculum was developed through expert exchange and is based on the World Health Organisation's Manual of Diagnostic Ultrasound. It consisted of two didactic components: an on-site training phase across 5 days for a total of 24 hours, and a digital follow-up phase involving the meeting of a bi-weekly tumor board online. The learning objectives of the on-site training were normal imaging and recognition of common pathologies of the abdominal organs, vessels, lymph nodes, female breasts and lungs. The virtual tumour boards met to discuss cases and ultrasound findings, thus aiding continuing professional development after the training sessions had concluded. The face-to-face course component was accompanied by tests given before and after training as well as an evaluation sheet (Likert-scale with 1 = 'completely/very good' and 7 'not at all/very poor'). Of 20 participants from a rural hospital in Tanzania, a total of 16 were included in the analysis (clinical officers n = 6; medical officers n = 10). A significant increase in knowledge (p < 0.01) was measured both in the subjective self-assessment and in the theoretical competence tests. In multivariate linear regression, the status 'medical officers yes' (β = 5.4; p = 0.04) had a significant influence on theory test results at T2. During the 24 virtual tumour board meetings, 28 cases were discussed and a continuous improvement in image acquisition quality was observed. The ultrasound education concept comes with a sustainable increase in clinical competence and improved oncological ultrasound screening locally. There is potential for the transfer of the concept to other locations, which can be explored in the future.

Development and Implementation of a Basic Veterinary Ultrasound Curriculum

Diagnostic ultrasound is an important imaging modality in veterinary medicine. Surveys of veterinarians suggest that ultrasound is a desired clinical competence and that new graduates are expected to practice basic ultrasound skills. This report describes the development and implementation of a basic ultrasound training program in the core curriculum at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine (ISU-CVM). A multidisciplinary team of ISU-CVM faculty created and delivered a basic ultrasound training program consisting of two lectures and two hands-on laboratories incorporated into a second-year core course, utilizing ballistic gel and silicone phantoms as well as live-dog scanning. The focus of training was on basic image acquisition, image optimization, and regional sonographic anatomy of the canine abdomen. Students were surveyed at 6-month intervals during program implementation. Survey data from graduating students, alumni, and employers were also analyzed. The program was successfully implemented and was well-received by all key stakeholders. Alumni and employer surveys reinforced the importance of basic ultrasound skills as a competency for new graduates. Student survey data revealed that satisfaction with ultrasound training increased after implementation of the program, as did students’ perception of their skill level in individual ultrasound competencies. Student surveys also identified ways to enrich the program by providing additional opportunities for ultrasound practice in subsequent laboratory courses and clinical rotations. This report summarizes lessons learned during development of basic ultrasound training in the core curriculum at ISU-CVM and can serve as a reference for other institutions considering similar programs.

Diabetes Basic Training Program: Empowering Veterans for Wellness.

Diabetes impacts 1 in 4 patients in the Veterans Health Administration and is associated with serious negative health consequences in addition to high health care system utilization and cost. The Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center developed Diabetes Basic Training, a 9-week intervention that blends medical consultation with group support and training in self-management strategies for enhancing patient motivation and empowerment. Diabetes Basic Training combined 3 monthly shared medical appointments and 6 Diabetes Self-Management Program sessions led in part by trained peers with diabetes. Diabetes Self-Management Program sessions focus on educating patients on diabetes and self-management tools and encourage active practice in building self-management skills and confidence. During shared medical appointments, a clinical psychologist or psychology postdoctoral fellow skilled in motivational interviewing facilitated the group to enhance patient motivation and empowerment for improved diabetes self-management. This novel program combined 2 types of group appointments to provide veterans with access to health care professionals and education on diabetes self-management. Preliminary results suggest the need for larger studies and that these programs may be beneficial in a veteran population.

Sleep duration and perceptions of sleep quality in British Army recruits during basic training - an observational analysis.

Sleep is critical to the health, wellbeing and performance of military personnel during basic training. This two-part study evaluated sleep-wake patterns and sleep disturbances in junior soldiers (JS) and infantry recruits in Autumn 2021 (study 1), and non-infantry recruits in spring 2022 (study 2). During studies 1 and 2, validated wearable technology combined with a sleep diary was used to quantify sleep-wake indices, sleep disturbances and perceptions of sleep quality. Sleep diary data was analysed descriptively. A series of repeated-measures ANOVAs examined differences in objective sleep-wake indices. Correlation analysis determined associations between time in bed (TIB) and total sleep time (TST). Significant (p < 0.05) differences in most sleep-wake indices were observed between weeks of basic training for all cohorts. Strong positive correlations between TIB and TST were observed for each cohort across basic training (r = 0.681 - 0.970, p < 0.001), with longer TST associated with greater TIB. The mean±SD sleep duration (hours and mins [hm]) for JS (06:22 ± 00:27hm), non-infantry (05:41 ± 00:47hm) and infantry (05:46 ± 00:34hm) recruits across basic training was consistently below national recommendations. The mean±SD bed and wake times for JS (bedtime: 23:01 ± 00:32hm; awake: 05:34 ± 00:10hm), non-infantry (bedtime: 23:38 ± 01:09hm; awake: 04:47 ± 00:58hm), and infantry (bedtime: 23:13 ± 00:29hm; awake: 05:38 ± 00:26hm) recruits varied across weeks of basic training, with over 80% reporting "fairly bad" or "very bad" sleep quality and frequent periods of "dozing off" during daytime activity. The most commonly reported sleep disturbing factors identified during basic training involved: late-night military admin (e.g., ironing, boot cleaning, kit set up etc), early morning wake times, extraneous noise, light and hot room temperatures within the primary sleeping environment, bed/mattress discomfort, muscle soreness and feelings of stress and anxiety. Our findings contribute to the existing evidence that long-term sleep loss is pervasive during initial military training programmes. The average sleep durations indicate chronic and unrecoverable sleep loss which would be expected to significantly impair physical and cognitive military performance, and increase the risk of injury, illness and attrition rates during basic training. Changes in the design and scheduling of basic training programmes to enable, at the least, minimum sleep recommendations to be met, and to improve sleep hygiene in the primary sleeping environment are warranted.

A Quasi Experimental Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Basic First Aid Training Programme in Terms of Knowledge and Skills among Students in Selected Schools of Gurugram

Introduction: This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a Basic First Aid Training Program among students in selected schools of Gurugram, focusing on both knowledge acquisition and practical skills development. Objective: The research involved a pre-test/post-test design with an intervention group that received the first aid training and a control group without any intervention. Methods: The sample comprised students from diverse backgrounds in selected schools of Gurugram, ensuring a representative mix of participants. The Basic First Aid Training Program was meticulously designed, incorporating theoretical knowledge sessions and hands-on practical training. The curriculum covered essential first aid techniques such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), wound care, choking response, and emergency response protocols. Results: The finding of the study showed that pre to posttest was improves gradually and the mean difference shows the result was statistically significant. There was an association between the education of mother with knowledge and skills of basic first aid among students. Conclusion: Basic first aid training programme shows effectiveness on knowledge and skills among the school students. The present study was intended to assess the effectiveness of basic first aid knowledge and skills training in school students of schools of Gurugram.

The application of objective clinical human reliability analysis (OCHRA) in the assessment of basic robotic surgical skills.

Using a validated, objective, and standardised assessment tool to assess progression and competency is essential for basic robotic surgical training programmes. Objective clinical human reliability analysis (OCHRA) is an error-based assessment tool that provides in-depth analysis of individual technical errors. We conducted a feasibility study to assess the concurrent validity and reliability of OCHRA when applied to basic, generic robotic technical skills assessment. Selected basic robotic surgical skill tasks, in virtual reality (VR) and dry lab equivalent, were performed by novice robotic surgeons during an intensive 5-day robotic surgical skills course on da Vinci® X and Xi surgical systems. For each task, we described a hierarchical task analysis. Our developed robotic surgical-specific OCHRA methodology was applied to error events in recorded videos with a standardised definition. Statistical analysis to assess concurrent validity with existing tools and inter-rater reliability were performed. OCHRA methodology was applied to 272 basic robotic surgical skills tasks performed by 20 novice robotic surgeons. Performance scores improved from the start of the course to the end using all three assessment tools; Global Evaluative Assessment of Robotic Skills (GEARS) [VR: t(19) = - 9.33, p < 0.001] [dry lab: t(19) = - 10.17, p < 0.001], OCHRA [VR: t(19) = 6.33, p < 0.001] [dry lab: t(19) = 10.69, p < 0.001] and automated VR [VR: t(19) = - 8.26, p < 0.001]. Correlation analysis, for OCHRA compared to GEARS and automated VR scores, shows a significant and strong inverse correlation in every VR and dry lab task; OCHRA vs GEARS [VR: mean r = - 0.78, p < 0.001] [dry lab: mean r = - 0.82, p < 0.001] and OCHRA vs automated VR [VR: mean r = - 0.77, p < 0.001]. There is very strong and significant inter-rater reliability between two independent reviewers (r = 0.926, p < 0.001). OCHRA methodology provides a detailed error analysis tool in basic robotic surgical skills with high reliability and concurrent validity with existing tools. OCHRA requires further evaluation in more advanced robotic surgical procedures.

Comparative Characteristics of Approaches to Footballers' Training at the Stage of Preliminary Basic Training in Football

Organisations in Lviv. Modern football is developing in various directions. Taking into account the extensive system of football competitions for adults in Ukraine (premier league, first league, second league, amateur championship, regional championships and championships of districts or cities), an important role is played by the compliance of training programs with the age characteristics of athletes and the effectiveness of organizations. who train young football players in Ukraine. Today, among them are specialized organizations for the training of football players in the city of Lviv, namely: "Rukh", "Lviv" and "Karpaty". Purpose: to establish the common and distinctive features of training programs for football players at the stage of preliminary basic training in Lviv football organizations (for example, "Rukh", "Lviv", "Karpaty"). Material and methods. In the process of research, the main information material for filling the publication was the data of training programs for football players in football organizations of Lviv: "Rukh", "Lviv" and "Karpaty". Also, the materials of Ukrainian and foreign professional scientific publications related to the training of young football players were taken into account. Results. One of the main factors in the education of football players is the effectiveness of organizations that implement this process in practice and, accordingly, the effectiveness of the training programs that athletes follow. The main goal of the long–term training of young football players abroad is to educate strong football players, endowed with skills and abilities that allow them to effectively play the game in conditions of shortage of time and space and physical contact with the opponent. In all programs of football organizations of Lviv, which are engaged in the training of young football players ("Rukh", "Lviv" and "Karpaty"), the same emphasis in the educational and training process is followed today. In particular, during the training of young football players in Lviv, special attention is paid to work on improving tactical preparation, individual skills, the ability to act in "1x1" situations, tactical thinking, mental preparation, etc. This is due to the fact that the programs used to train players in the mentioned Lviv organizations are based on the basic training programs for football players of the best academies in the world. Also, training programs for young Ukrainian football players contain data from fundamental domestic scientific works.

Actual and Ideal Support and Supervision in Clinical Education Settings: Comparing the Perspectives of Nursing Students and Clinical Instructors

Introduction: Nursing is a practical profession in which clinical training is the basic medical training program. Clinical training is so important that it is considered as the core of professional education. The aim of the present study was to compare the perceptions of nursing students and clinical instructors about the actual and ideal support and supervision in a clinical setting. &#x0D; Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, 130 nursing students and 30 clinical instructors of Gonabad Medical Science University are reviewed via census method. The data collection instrument includes the “Perception of Extent of Support and Supervision Survey” questionnaire which is designed in both real and expected status. The findings were analyzed using SPSS20 software and descriptive and analytical statistics.&#x0D; Results: There is a significant difference between the actual and ideal perception of nursing students and clinical instructors in the support and supervision domains, so in the support domain, the expectation of nursing students was not met by clinical instructors, and in the supervision domain, the actual degree of supervision is greater than the students' expectation. However, clinical instructors have believed that the ideal support and supervision of students is provided by the clinical instructor.&#x0D; Conclusion: Conclusion: The results indicate that there is a gap in the view of clinical instructors and nursing students towards the actual and ideal support and supervision of students in clinical education environments. This gap may have negative effects on the clinical learning of students.

Examining It-Based Human Resources Strategies in Islamic Higher Education and Islamic Boarding Schools In Indonesia

This study examines IT-based HR development strategies in Islamic higher education and boarding schools in Indonesia, focusing on the Faculty of Tarbiyah at Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan Thaha Saifuddin, Jambi. It also explores the integration of IT in primary school teacher of education training programs. The research employed interviews, surveys, and document analysis using a case study approach. Participants included faculty members, administrators, students, and teachers/administrators from selected Islamic boarding schools. The findings show the faculty's progressive integration of IT-based HR development strategies. These include Learning Management Systems (LMS), online training modules, virtual classrooms, and educational apps. These tools improve instruction, student engagement, and administrative efficiency. The study also highlights the inclusion of IT in basic school teacher education training programs. Incorporating IT skills into the curriculum is crucial for prospective teachers to effectively use educational technologies in their classrooms. This research enhances the understanding of IT-based HR development strategies in Indonesia's Islamic higher education and boarding schools. It guides educational institutions and policymakers for better integration of IT in teacher education programs, promoting effective HR development strategies, and improving overall educational quality.

The Impact of Core Complex Training on Some Basketball-Related Aspects of Physical Strength and Shooting Performance.

Exercises for the core can be categorized as promoting core-stability, core-strength, or functionality, as these are crucial aspects of most sports activities. This study aimed to examine the effects of using core complex training (CCT), complex training (CT), and core exercise (CE) on some aspects of muscle strength and shooting performance in basketball players. The 36 participants were divided into three groups of 12 each, and then the experimental approach was applied to each group. The groups were labeled as follows: the core complex training group (N = 12; age, 18.58 ± 0.67 years; height, 178.08 ± 0.79 cm; weight, 76.42 ± 1.38 kg; training age, 7.42 ± 0.51 years); the complex training group (N = 12; age, 18.50 ± 0.52 years; height, 177.92 ± 1.31 cm; weight, 76.67 ± 1.78 kg; training age, 7.33 ± 0.49 years); and the core exercise group (n = 12; age, 18.42 ± 0.52 years; height, 177.75 ± 1.29 cm; weight, 76.58 ± 1.38 kg; training age, 7.42 ± 0.67 years). For ten weeks, each of the three groups participated in three training sessions every week. This study investigates the impact of core complex training on basketball shooting ability and muscle strength. The eight-week program, consisting of weight training, plyometric exercises, and core exercises, yielded improvements in muscle strength and shooting accuracy. In tests of muscular strength and basketball shooting ability, the CCT group outperformed the CE and CT groups. The F value varied from 3.75 to 58.77, which are function values with a p < 0.05 significance level. The core complex training group exhibited superior muscle strength to that of both the complex training group and the core exercise group, in some areas. This is shown in the results of the javelin quadrathlon medicine ball test, the core muscle strength and stability test, the sit-up abdomen test, the sit-up back test, the standing long jump test, the Sargent jump test, and the shooting test (p < 0.005). Due to the effect of the core complex training program on improving performance efficiency and muscle strength, which affects the results of matches, we have recommended using the proven basic strength training program at other age stages, with the objective of including the concept, importance, and design of compound basic strength training in training programs used by basketball coaches.

One of the basic skills in the current digitalization era is the skill to operate a computer, especially operating Microsoft Office. The problems found in the field are the lack of school facilities in providing computers, lack of computer ownership by each student and limited learning time to deepen Microsoft Office practicum. One solution to overcome this is to hold a basic computer training program. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the influence of the training program on computer operating skills. This research is a quantitative research with a type of experimental design. The sample in this study was 22 class VII students of SMP N 5 East Kupang. Data collection techniques were carried out by means of skills tests and non-tests (observation). The data analysis technique uses a prerequisite analysis test which consists of a normality test and a variance homogeneity test. Furthermore, using the N-Gain test to see the effect of basic computer training programs on students' skills in operating Microsoft Office. The results showed that the significance value of the paired samples test was 0.000 &lt;0.05, which means that there was an influence on the basic computer training program on the ability of students at SMP N 5 Kupang Timur in operating Microsoft Office. It can also be seen from the N-Gain score of 58.2% that the basic computer training program conducted was quite influential in improving the skills of SMP N 5 Kupang Timur students in operating Microsoft Office.
