USING HOT POTATOES APP AS TEACHING METHOD FOR VOCABULARY SUBJECT

To learn to read, write, talk, and listen, students must master vocabulary. To get good at the four basic English skills, you need to learn new words. Learners can easily access the Hot Potatoes app from anywhere with an internet connection and a simple computer browser. There are exercise templates in the Hot Potatoes programs that can be used to make web-based tasks that can be uploaded to servers and made available to students. There are six different kinds of web-based workouts that Hot Potatoes can make. These can be used on their own or connected to other workouts or activities to make a number of tasks. The app Hot Potatoes is helpful because it lets students revise and change their work by giving them hints and then giving them comments in the target language. Teachers can also choose which email address will receive student grades by using the Hot Potatoes program. The purpose of this study is to find out what happens to tenth-grade students at SMKN 2 Palangka Raya when they use Hot Potato-based learning materials to improve their language. This study examines how Hot Potatoes used in SMKN 2 Palangka Raya tenth graders. This research topic is whether Hot Potatoes improve students' vocabularies before and after teaching. The research utilizes a pre-experimental design, the one-group pretest-posttest approach, because consists of only one group serving as both the control and experimental groups. In the one-group pretest-posttest design, a single group is monitored both before and after receiving therapy.To address the study topic, the researcher calculates pre- and post-test scores using paired sample t-test. H0 is rejected by paired sample t-test. The 2-tailed Sig. value is 0.000 < 0.05. Students' vocabulary scores changed significantly between pre- and post-test. Paired Sample Statistic showed that the mean before teaching with Hot Potatoes was 52.73 and after was 82.42. Hot Potatoes is alternative for the students in learning English especially in vocabulary. This reason is based on the result of test after getting treatment. The activity using the Hot Potatoes makes the students are easy to understand the material. In addition, this activity invites the students to be active and creative. Active here means that the students participate in studying of English and they feel fun. Meanwhile, creative here means that the students do the gap-fill exercise and matching exercise. The implementation Hot Potatoes in teaching and learning gives positive effect on the students’ achievement. It can be done because by fun learning, information can be understood and maintained well Teachers are suggested to use the media as one of the variations in teaching English and they can use technology as integrated media at school. The other researchers can do the similar research with other media or authoring tool besides Hot Potatoes such as Quizlet, Notion, Kahoot and so on

The Role of the Snakes and Ladders Game in Basic English Skills in Early Childhood

Early childhood education is an important stage in shaping character and basic skills, including English language acquisition. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of the snakes and ladders game in improving basic English skills in early childhood. Using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method involving two cycles, the snakes and ladders game was modified to include English elements. The results showed that the game not only helped children recognize new vocabulary, but also improved their speaking and listening skills. The social interaction during the game also provided opportunities for children to practice simple conversations in English. Thus, the snakes and ladders game can be a fun and effective learning tool in teaching English in early childhood

CORRELATION ANALYSIS OF BASIC ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TO TOEFL SCORE OF STUDENTS AT COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES IN SEMARANG

This study aims to identify the correlation between basic English proficiency and the acquisition of TOEFL scores by 6th semester students at STIKES Telogorejo Semarang. This study used descriptive quantitative method. The population in this study were 6th semester students of STIKES Telogorejo Semarang with a sample of 179 respondents. Data collection techniques are test techniques and questionnaire techniques. The data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test with the help of the SPSS for Windows version 25.0 program. The test results showed that as many as 83.3% of students scored below the minimum standard of 450. Based on the Spearman correlation test, there is a significant correlation at a low level between listening skills, grammar skills and ability to understand reading texts with TOEFL score results. The positive direction of the correlation indicates that TOEFL score results increase if basic skills in English also increase.

This study investigates the effectiveness of a teacher training program and subsequent teaching practice aimed at enhancing basic English ability among high school students. It was conducted with 12 pre-service English teachers in Gangwon Province, Korea. The program consisted of a 14-week training session linked to the ‘Utilizing ICT for English Education’ course, followed by a 6-week teaching practice. To assess its impact, a combination of varied data collection methods was employed throughout the semester, including weekly in-depth team discussions, a detailed survey, and an extensive whole class conference. The analysis focused on how both training and teaching practice influenced the pre-service teachers’ ability to develop their students’ basic English skills. Descriptive statistics calculated with SPSS Statistics 29 analyzed Likert-scale survey data, while qualitative data from team discussions and the conference were thoroughly and systematically coded. Findings clearly indicate significant improvements in the instructional skills of the pre-service teachers. Additionally, the study highlights the ongoing challenges in basic English education and emphasizes the need for tailored teaching strategies that accommodate the diverse learning needs of high school students. Ultimately, these results affirm the importance of continuous development in teacher training programs to adapt to educational demands and societal changes effectively.

English Proficiency Requirement for Improving Global Real Estate Business Program

This paper looks at both the felt (present situation) and perceived needs (target situation) English communication needs of Korean university students enrolled in the Global Real Estate Business program which uses English only as medium of instruction. Data was gathered using 8-item questionnaire composed of scales, checklists, and open-ended questions. Statistical and interpretive approaches were used to analyze the profile of the respondents, identify the both the present situation and target situation English communication needs of the students to inform possible program evaluation. Based on the study conducted, it was found that of the four communication skills in English, the respondents consider ‘listening’ as the most used, most practiced, most important, but most difficult. This study is important for the Global Real Estate Business Program teachers to consider, so that they can device ways on how listening comprehension can be improved. Also, the list of Global real estate business related skills and vocabulary focus will inform the teachers of which to emphasize and focus so that their classes will be able to better address what actual communication needs their learners feel are most important. In the future, it will continue to be necessary to manage practical global real estate business programs while continuously improving basic English skills, focusing on listening, to enable students to perform classes taught only in English.

초등영어 기초학력 부진아를 위한 심층분석 도구 및 통합적 보정교육 프로그램 개발 방향

This study develops tools and materials to address the issue of poor basic English skills to analyze and remediate the difficulties faced by students with low basic skills. By reviewing previous studies, the concept of basic skills and elementary English basic skills was established, and various programs and policies were developed to support basic skills. Analysis of existing diagnostic tools to assess elementary English basic skills revealed that these evaluation methods focused on listening and speaking abilities and overlooked the importance of literacy learning. Therefore, this study proposed areas of an in-depth analysis tool for elementary English basic skills. Moreover, cognitive and affective remediation materials should be developed for students with insufficient elementary English basic skills. Cognitive remediation materials include knowledge of the alphabet, phonemic, phonics, sight vocabulary, word reading, and early reading abilities. Affective remediation materials focus on the affective domain to transform students’ negative attitudes toward learning into positive ones and instill achievement motivation and confidence. Such cognitive and affective approaches are crucial for improving students’ basic English abilities and stimulating motivation and intellectual curiosity toward learning. By accurately diagnosing the difficulties faced by students with low basic skills and implementing effective remedial education, the study proposes practical measures to enhance students’ learning abilities and improve the quality of English education.

Fun with English Activity for Elementary School Age Children At Naungan Kasih-Ende Orphanage

English language skills are one of the gateways to knowing the world globally. This indicates that learning English should be studied massively by various groups. However, not everyone has the same access to this experience. One of them is the children of the Naungan Kasih-Ende Orphanage. This community service activity aims to provide access to Basic English knowledge and skills to orphanage children who are beginner English language learners. This mentoring activity begins with teaching basic English (English for beginners). This activity was carried out for 2 months with an accompanying team consisting of 3 lecturers and 1 student. The partners in this activity were 11 elementary school age children at the Naungan Kasih Orphanage. The learning methods used in this activity vary, including games and songs, role play, drilling, total physical response with the aid of the learning media. The result of this activity is enthusiasm for learning English in a learning atmosphere without boring feeling. This pleasant learning atmosphere has a positive impact on improving participants' Basic English skills as measured by the test scores obtained at the end of the activity.

Teacher Candidates’ Self-Efficacy Beliefs Related to Four Basic Skills in English

The aim of the study is to explore the pre-service teachers' self-efficacy beliefs related to foreign language (English) skills within various variables. The "Self-Efficacy Scale for English Language Skills" developed by Sağlam and Arslan (2018) was used as a main data collection tool. Within the scope of this study, the relations between self-efficacy beliefs of senior teacher candidates and other variables such as gender and study programs were focused on. Based on the findings, it was seen that, almost all (90.8%) of the pre-service teachers did not allocate any time for self –study in English and more than half of them (56.1%) stated that they learned English only to pass the course. Additionally, in the analysis, it was observed that the English language skills self-efficacy belief levels of the senior teacher candidates were low. According to the independent sample t-Test results, no statistically significant difference was found between gender and self-efficacy beliefs in English language skills, except for listening skills. Related to the findings of the One-Way ANOVA Test, there was no statistically significant difference between study programs and English self-efficacy beliefs. Lastly, according to the chi-square test, no statistically significant relationship was found between the six study programs and the self- study time. Exploring the English Teaching Approach of “Integrating Reading and Writing to Promote Learning through Writing” Based on “Cultivation of Key Literacy in the Subject of English” and Its Rationale Analysis

The English curriculum based on the cultivation of key competences in the Subject of English should cultivate students’ key competence in four aspects, namely, language ability, cultural awareness, thinking quality and learning ability. The English Teaching Approach of “Integrating Reading and Writing to Promote Learning through Writing” creates a language environment suitable for Chinese foreign language learners. Through the teaching process of integrating reading and writing, students are trained to master basic English knowledge and skills, appreciate excellent cultures, learn to apply critical thinking and innovative thinking, and acquire how to learn independently. This teaching approach provides a theoretical and practical teaching platform and starting point for the real implementation of the curriculum goal of “the Cultivation of Key Competences in the Subject of English”, which is helpful to achieve the national education goal of “strengthening moral education and cultivating people”.

Tertiary Students’ Perspectives on the Use of English Songs and Podcasts on Spotify in Improving Listening Skills

The use of multimedia tools has proven beneficial for teaching basic English language skills in our present day. Several studies have demonstrated the result of using one of the media platforms, such as Spotify, where English songs and podcasts can help students learn and develop their listening skills. Despite its efficacy, few researchers have investigated students' attitudes to listening skills using English songs or podcasts on Spotify. The study examines students' perceptions of enhancing their listening skills through Spotify songs and podcasts. Over the academic year 2023/2024, this research was carried out at the Department of English Language Education, UIN Jakarta, with the participation of 10 first-year students. Qualitative description methods have been used in this survey, with data collected from questionnaires and presented by descriptive statistical analyses. The results show that most first-year English Education Department students think that English songs on Spotify are much more effective or beneficial than podcasts for enhancing listening comprehension.

Improving English language skills for human resources at CV. Langgeng Jaya, Jombang

Globalization necessitates the world of work to have proficient Human Resources (HR), particularly in foreign language skills. English, being an internationally utilized foreign language, serves as an additional advantage in the professional domain. This activity aims to ensure that HR at CV. Langgeng Jaya, Jombang, possesses basic English skills, especially in the vocabulary related to the transportation industry. The method employed for this activity includes observation, socialization, drilling, practice, and question-and-answer sessions (interviews) with HR. The results of this activity indicate an enhancement in the basic knowledge of English related to the transportation sector among HR at CV. Langgeng Jaya, Jombang. The percentage reveals that 82% of human resources now comprehend basic English, compared to the initial 40% from a total of 50 people. It can be concluded that there has been an improvement in HR skills for engaging in conversations using basic English.

Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris Melalui Metode Silent Way Untuk Meningkatkan Kosa Kata Perawat Dalam Kemampuan Berbicara Bahasa Inggris Di Rumah Sakit

The silent way English language training was carried out at the Nurul Hasanah Kutacane Hospital. This silent way English language training aims to improve basic English skills for hospital employees. This English training method uses the silent way method. English language training using the silent method is used so that hospital employees can practice English language skills in medical sciences that will be used in the world of work. This English language training using the silent method was carried out thanks to collaboration between Nurul Hasanah Kutacane University and Nurul Hasanah Kutacane Hospital. This English language training is to assess evaluation using Quasy-Experiment (pre-experimental designs) with a design using one group pretest-posttest, where in this design there is no comparison group (control), but the first observation (pretest) has been carried out which allows the team to examine changes that occur after an experiment or posttest. The results obtained by the community service team showed significant changes in English language training through the silent way method to increase nurses' vocabulary in speaking English in hospitals.

Pemanfaatan Media Video Pada Website Dan Youtube Untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Toefl Dan Menulis Abstrak Kti Calon Lulusan Unived

TOEFL is a Test of English as a Foreign Language which is a test of basic English language skills which is also one of the requirements for prospective graduates at the University of Dehasen Bengkulu. In the last few years after the Covid 19 pandemic, the TOEFL test as a graduation requirement at the University of Dehasen Bengkulu was carried out using Google Forms and information media such as websites and YouTube as intermediary media in conveying important material to prospective graduates. Apart from that, prospective graduates need to be provided with material about the importance of Scientific Writing abstracts which are related to the student's final assignment, namely the thesis. The thesis’s abstract is translated into English at UPT Bahasa Inggris to make it easier for readers to search for research reference titles through the abstract. Apart from this aim, the title of the scientific writing abstract at the University of Dehasen Bengkulu, will be translated as a reference for the thesis title in the English transcript. In the context of community service carried out by a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education who collaborated with the UPT English Language Team at the University of Dehasen Bengkulu as managers and organizers of TOEFL and Thesis’s abstract translation which raised the title "Utilization of Video Media on Websites and YouTube to Improve TOEFL Skills and Scientific Writing Abstracts for Prospective UNIVED Graduates". The stages of service activities are carried out starting from preparation, needs analysis, implementation and preparation of activity reports. Delivery of socialization material by utilizing videos uploaded on the UPT Bahasa Inggris website and YouTube channel. Apart from that, the initial introduction to TOEFL was carried out through the Zoom application and WhatsApp Group management. Apart from that, test technical briefings and simulations on the use of Google Form media for the TOEFL test are carried out face-to-face alternately for prospective graduates who have difficulty and do not understand how to operate the LJK Google Form. With this activity, it is expected that there will be increased knowledge and preparation for prospective graduates before taking the TOEFL test and prospective graduates can understand the strategy of scientific writing abstract, then it is expected that this activity will continue in the future.

Investigating Chinese Tertiary EFL Teachers’ Beliefs and Practices in the Application of Learning Management Systems Using Q Methodology

The purpose of this study is to explore Chinese tertiary EFL teachers’ beliefs and practices as well as the relationships between them in the application of Learning Management Systems (LMS in short). By reviewing relevant literature, previous studies either carried out research on teachers’ beliefs and practices in the training of basic English learning skills or compared them between novice and experienced teachers. This study fills the gap of research on teachers’ beliefs and practices from the perspective of technology integration, specifically LMS application. By using the Q methodology, 38 EFL teachers teaching the same EFL course to undergraduate students at F University in mainland China were selected as research participants. After collecting research data through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, four different types of teachers’ LMS beliefs and three different levels of teachers’ LMS practices were identified by employing Q Methodology software-PQMethod and a web application Ken-Q analysis. Through comparing each participant’s corresponding beliefs and practices, both consistent and inconsistent relationships are found. The research findings not only prove the definite connection between teachers’ LMS beliefs and practices but also reveal the discrepancies between what teachers believe and do while using LMS. In general, The research can not only offer a new methodological solution for further research on cognitive factors like teachers’ beliefs but also provide pedagogical implications to EFL teachers to promote their career development.

Students’ Perception of LINE Webtoon Application and Its Impact on Their English Reading Habits and Skills

Reading is one of the basic English language skills that has not been mastered by all students. On the other hand, reading media determines the frequency of reading habits and the improvement of reading skills. LINE Webtoon application, one of the digital literacy platforms, allows for comfortable and enjoyable reading on computers, tablets, and mobile devices. However, unfortunately, the LINE Webtoon application as a reading medium has not been widely used in the process of teaching and learning English reading. This study investigated students’ perceptions of using LINE Webtoon and how it influenced their English reading habits and skills. Six students from the English Language Education Department at a private university in Yogyakarta were involved. The qualitative design was applied with interviews for the data collection process. The interview results described students’ reading experience using LINE Webtoon. The findings revealed students’ interest in reading content in the app due to the attractive illustrations, the use of easy-to-understand and simple language, and the correlation of story with everyday life. The interview results also presented changes in students’ reading habits as things go about reading stories on LINE Webtoon: increasing their reading routines, reading duration, vocabulary collection, and grammar knowledge. Reading English stories through the LINE Webtoon app has positive effects on enhancing students’ reading habits and reading skills. This research implies that the development of English reading curriculum should involve various innovative and effective digital literacy platforms for the enhancement of English reading habit and skills.

STRATEGI PENGEMBANGAN KETERAMPILAN BAHASA INGGRIS MAHASISWA MENGGUNAKAN SELF-REGULATED LEARNING MELALUI DESAIN PEMBELAJARAN MODEL FLIPPED

This study examines the development of students' foreign language skills in learning English using the Flipped learning design which is designed with self-regulated learning strategies. The study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design. While the experimental group received learning strategies through a flipped classroom model designed with a self-regulated learning strategy, on the other hand the control class group received learning strategies that did not use the self-regulated learning strategy of the flipped learning class model. The results of the study show that the self-regulated learning strategy positively influences the development of foreign language skills in the flipped classroom model. A significant difference in support of groups working with the platform included self-learning strategies that excelled in speaking, reading, writing, and grammar test scores. However, based on the findings there is no significant difference in the results of the listening skill test. This Research also concludes that using strategies to help students be actively involved in activities outside and inside the classroom can contribute to improving their basic English skills.

Revealing the Relationship Between Vocabulary Mastery and Listening Skills

The relationship between vocabulary mastery and English listening skills at a given level—in this case, at the basic level—is examined in further detail, it will become more exciting and remarkable. This study attempts to demonstrate the connection between vocabulary knowledge and English listening skills in order to comprehend the relationship between the two on a basic level. This study used a correlational research methodology. This research technique looked at the relationship between vocabulary mastery and students' basic listening skills in English. The summary of the research findings above makes it evident that there is a weak but favourable correlation between basic vocabulary mastery and basic level listening skills. 0.0339 is the correlation coefficient. This suggests that other factors have a greater impact than basic vocabulary proficiency, which only has a 3.39% effect on the worth of basic listening skills. Based on the results of the ANOVA study, it is then found that the significance value of F is higher than the alpha value. As a result, there is less of a connection between basic vocabulary knowledge and basic listening skills. Additionally, by rejecting H0 and accepting H1, this study establishes a nonlinear regression line for the relationship between variables X and Y.

English Teaching Through Literature-Based Instruction: What do Teachers Experience?

Literature-based instruction is one of the methods that the teacher can used in teaching English to improve student’s four basic skills in English. As a result, this paper aimed to investigate a) to identify the procedures used by teacher in implementing literature-based instruction during distance learning to improve four basic English skills in the classroom at Gandhi Memorial International School, b) to analyze the challenges faced by teacher in implementing literature- based instruction during distance learning at Gandhi Memorial International School. The implementation of Literature-Based Instruction was carried out for Primary International School grade 5 at Gandhi Memorial International School. This study used qualitative research as a research method. The subject of this research was an English teacher in class 5B at Gandhi Memorial International School. Data were collected using an observation checklist and interview guidelines. The result of the data that had been collected from the first question was that the procedure carried out by the teacher is to carry out three stages, namely; pre-activity, whilst activity, and post-activity. Then, the findings for the second research question were that there are three challenges that teachers encountered, namely; time constraints, differentiated instructions, and various assessment rubrics.

Students’ difficulties on writing undergraduate thesis at Islamic university

Until now, there are still students who do not graduate on time. This study aims to determine the difficulties of students in writing undergraduate thesis in the English Tadris Study Program, UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Researcher used case study designs and 31 questions interviews as research instruments. This research was conducted at the English Education Study Program, UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. The subjects in this study were 5 female and 5 male who were selected using a purposive sampling technique based on several criteria. In this study, the researcher found that there were some difficulties for students in writing their thesis. These difficulties include: difficulties regarding basic knowledge of thesis; Psychological; Economic; Socio-Cultural; The consultation process with the advisor; and Technological. Besides that, researchers also found other results, which are students' difficulties in lacking basic English knowledge and skills, academic requirements files, study programs and faculty academic services.
