The DVB File Format [Standards in a Nutshell

The Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project develops standards for television broadcast services. The DVB File Format, one of the recent DVB standards, is intended to be a recording format for received broadcasts and a file interchange format when recorded broadcasts are copied or moved from one DVB-compatible device to another. The DVB File Format is an extension of the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF), which is widely used as a basis format for various container formats, such as MPEG-4 File Format (MP4) and 3GP File Format (3GP) developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), respectively.

Transport and Storage Systems for 3-D Video Using MPEG-2 Systems, RTP, and ISO File Format

Three-dimensional video based on stereo and multiview video representations is currently being introduced to the home through various channels, including broadcast such as via cable, terrestrial and satellite transmission, streaming and download through the Internet, as well as on storage media such as Blu-ray discs. In order to deliver 3-D content to the consumer, different media system technologies have been standardized or are currently under development. The most important standards are MPEG-2 systems, which is used for digital broadcast and storage on Blu-ray discs, real-time transport protocol (RTP), which is used for real-time transmissions over the Internet, and the ISO base media file format, which can be used for progressive download in video-on-demand applications. In this paper, we give an overview of these three system layer approaches, where the main focus is on the multiview video coding (MVC) extension of H.264/AVC and the application of the system approaches to the delivery and storage of MVC.

File Format Design for Interactive Music Service

This letter describes a file format designed for interactive music service where users are able to recompose music based on their own preferences. The proposed design utilizes the flexible features of the ISO base media file format (ISO/IEC 14496-12, ISO-BMFF). The techniques offered in the proposed file format enable compact storage and efficient preset management, allowing users to recompose music with ease and convenience. Additionally, an implementation scheme for an interactive music player is shown along with its results.

Broadcasting beyond the TV: The Importance and Impact of Files in Broadcasting

In today's world there is an ever-changing, ever-expanding set of demands on the delivery, usage, availability, and reach of content. This paper discusses this set of demands and how they provide both the motivation and requirements for files and their role as part of the toolset used by broadcasters and content providers. It also briefly considers a range of new service opportunities that can be provided using files. Finally, as a good example of a suitable file format, which is also already widely used, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) base media file format is described. This shows how it suits, and can be extended to suit, the requirements outlined earlier.

File format for storage of scalable video

A file format for storage of scalable video is proposed in this paper. A generic model is presented to enable a codec independent description of scalable video stream. The relationships, especially the dependencies, among sub-streams in a scalable video stream are specified sufficiently and effectively in the proposed model. Complying with the presented scalable video stream model, the file format for scalable video is proposed based on ISO Base Media File Format, which is simple and flexible enough to address the demands of scalable video application as well as the non-scalable ones.
