Multi-focal superficial basal cell carcinoma of nipple and areola of 60 years female: A case report and a mini review

Background; basal cell carcinoma (BCC) has been considered the commonest diagnosed skin cancer, which has been more evident on the sun-exposed areas of the head and neck. The number of reported cases which have been diagnosed with BCC of the areola and nipple is gradually increasing. BCC of the areola and nipple has been considered more aggressive than BCC which has been detected in other sites of the body, as it has a greater liability for local invasion and metastatic spread to regional lymph nodes. Thus, early diagnosis and management of BCC of the areola and nipple is beneficial to decrease the incidence of its spread, hence improve patient's prognosis. Up-till 2016, only fifty-five cases of BCC of the areola and nipple had been diagnosed and reported. In the current case study, we have diagnosed another characteristic case of multifocal BCC of the nipple and areola in a sixty years old female patient, who had complained of enlargement and multi-focal ulceration of the nipple and areola.

Basal cell carcinoma is a common skin cancer worldwide. However basal cell carcinoma of nipple and areola complex is rare, commonly seen in males in elderly age group. The tumor has aggressive behavior with increased tendency for metastasis. We present a case in a 78 year male in the left breast.

A Common Tumor, An Uncommon Location: Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Nipple and Areola in a 49-Year-Old Woman

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) occurring on sun-protected regions is an uncommon phenomenon. BCC of the nipple is an exceedingly rare event. We review the literature on BCC of the female nipple and herein describe the eighth reported case in the English literature. Our patient was treated with Mohs micrographic surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy. BCC of the nipple are extremely rare tumors with unclear etiology. They can be aggressive and are capable of causing significant morbidity and mortality if they are neglected or improperly treated. With continued reporting of the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of these patients, we may gain an understanding of the pathogenesis, as well as the best method of control for these unusual tumors.
