Reconstruction of the evolution of the Yurongguo ophiolite: Constraints on the southward intra-oceanic subduction of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethys Ocean

The evolution of the Meso-Tethys Ocean has received much research attention, but whether there was intra-oceanic and the starting time of subduction remains controversial. In this study, we present detailed petrological, U-Pb geochronology, geochemical, and Sr-Nd isotope investigations on Yurongguo ultramafic rocks from the western part of the Shiquanhe-Lagkor-Jiali suture zone, south of the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone, including harzburgites and websterites. The harzburgites are characterized by V-shaped REE patterns and significant Eu depletion, showing significant sediment influence. The websterites are classified into two groups based on their petrological and geochemical, but they all show distinctly Nb-Ta enrichment. Yurongguo ultramafic rocks have low 87Sr/86Sr(t) but high εNd(t) values (+4.84 to + 8.55), indicating that these rocks evolved from a depleted mantle without the influence of arc. The zircon U-Pb age group includes 640 ± 30 Ma, 805 ± 13 Ma, 1002 ± 17 Ma, and 1781 ± 40 Ma, similar to the Precambrian basement of the central Lhasa subterrane. The harzburgites are the remnant of ∼ 30 % partial melting of the depleted mantle and metasomatized by a small amount of sediment melt. The websterites I are a cumulation of depleted mantle melt followed by metasomatized with Nb-Ta-rich material. The websterites II are the result of the reaction between the websterites I and sediment melt. Combined with previous studies, we proposed that these rocks may have formed during initial intra-oceanic subduction, which are the product of the early Jurassic subduction of the Meso-Tethys Ocean. The ancient continental basement of central Lhasa subterrane impacted the Early Jurassic igneous rock formed in the Bangong-Nujiang Tethys Ocean.

Redefining timing, genesis and geodynamic setting of polymetallic skarn mineralization, Gangdese belt, Tibet, from LA–ICP–MS garnet U–Pb geochronology

Iron, Cu, Pb–Zn, and W–Mo skarn deposits occur in the Gangdese metallogenic belt, Tibet. A lack of precise age constraints for mineralization hinders understanding of the processes contributing to skarn mineralization, particularly identification of the causative intrusions. In this study, new garnet U–Pb geochronological data are provided for the Qiagong (Fe) and Jiaduobule (Fe–Cu) skarns. We place particular emphasis on skarn garnet mineralogy, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS), to characterize garnet textures, compositions, and U–Pb isotope systematics. All garnets studied belong to the grossular-andradite series and display oscillatory compositional zoning (And100Gr0 to And20Gr80). Andradite-dominated garnet features a chondrite-normalized REE fractionation pattern exhibiting enrichment in LREE relative to HREE and a positive Eu anomaly, whereas grossular-dominated garnet displays relative LREE depletion and a marked flat HREE fractionation trend. Ore-forming elements, including Sn, W, As, and U, are detected at concentrations up to several hundreds of ppm in the same garnets. Concentrations of W and As are higher in andradite and correlate positively with one another. The correlation between U, Sn and the major oxide composition of garnet is insignificant, potentially resulting from the changing valence states of these elements under different redox conditions. Together with previously published and limited new data for the Gebunongba (Fe), Ri’a (Cu), and Hahaigang (W–Mo) skarns, the new garnet U–Pb age data indicate that the major Fe, Pb–Zn, and W–Mo mineralization event in the Gangdese metallogenic belt took place between 65 Ma and 50 Ma, with marked peaks at ∼ 65 Ma and ∼ 53 Ma. Partial melting of a crustal-dominated source due to the slab rollback (∼65 Ma) and break off (∼53 Ma) of Yarlug–Zangbo Tethyan Ocean and subsequent asthenosphere upwelling induced this regional event during the Paleogene to early Eocene. A less common but regionally widespread Cu (±Au) mineralization event in the same belt formed during the Late Cretaceous (∼85 Ma) and may have resulted from the coupled influence of the northward subduction of the Yarlug–Zangbo Tethyan Ocean and the southward subduction of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean. This contribution highlights the potential significance of the Late Cretaceous Cu(±Au) event and hence the prospectivity of the belt for both skarn and porphyry systems. More broadly, our findings carry implications for Neo-Tethyan metallogeny in the region extending from southwestern China to eastern Europe during the Late Cretaceous.

Late Jurassic oceanic plateau subduction in the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean of northern Tibet

Oceanic plateau accretion and subsequent flat-slab subduction in modern convergent settings have profoundly influenced the nature of subduction and mantle dynamics. However, evaluating similar impacts in ancient convergent settings, where oceanic plateaus have been subducted but geological records are limited, remains challenging. In this study, we present geochronological and geochemical data for a suite of ore-associated plutonic rocks from the Gaobaoyue area of northern Tibet. These rocks have zircon U–Pb ages of 152–146 Ma, with high Sr contents and Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios, low MgO, Yb, and Y contents, and depleted Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic compositions, consistent with an adakitic affinity that was generated by the partial melting of subducting oceanic crust. We compare the Late Jurassic adakitic magmatism with the spatiotemporal evolution of magmatism in northern Tibet to infer oceanic plateau subduction and subsequent flat-slab subduction in the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean. This tectonic model explains (i) slab-derived adakitic magmatism, (ii) the observed lull in magmatic activity, (iii) intraplate compression and uplift, and (iv) subduction jump and initiation. We also propose that the subduction of heterogeneous oceanic crust (i.e., buoyant oceanic plateau subduction) provided favorable conditions for tectonic exhumation, vertical slab tearing, and the formation of Cu–Au deposits. Our findings not only have implications for establishing the fundamental process of oceanic plateau accretion in ancient subduction zones but also provide an alternative explanation for Late Jurassic complex tectonomagmatic activity in northern Tibet.

Remagnetization of the Upper Permian–Lower Triassic limestones in the western Lhasa Terrane and its tectonic implications

SUMMARY The drift history of the Lhasa terrane plays an essential role in understanding the tectonic evolution of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean and the Neo-Tethyan Ocean, as well as the evolutionary history of the Tibetan Plateau. Here, a combined rock magnetic, petrographic, and palaeomagnetic study is performed on the Upper Permian–Lower Triassic limestones (∼259–251 Ma) in the western Lhasa terrane. The site-mean direction for the 28 sites is Dg = 32.1°, Ig = 50.3°, kg = 47.9 and α95 = 4.0° in situ and Ds = 342.9°, Is = 32.7°, ks = 43.2 and α95 = 4.2° after tilt-correction, yielding a palaeopole at 68.9°N, 314.4°E with A95 = 4.3°, corresponding to a palaeolatitude of 18.0° ± 4.3°N. The fold tests are not significant because the sampling section shows monoclinic features with minor variations in their bedding attitudes. The palaeopoles for the directions before and after tilt-correction are compared with reliable Late Permian–Palaeogene palaeopoles obtained from the Lhasa terrane. Based on these comparisons, the studied limestones were remagnetized prior to tilting and this remagnetization most likely occurred during the Early Cretaceous. The depositional environment of the limestones may have changed from anoxic to suboxic and oxic during the Early Cretaceous, leading to the oxidation of iron sulphide to authigenic magnetite. Meanwhile, the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous convergence between the western Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes may have resulted in tectonic fluid migration and the formation of calcite veins and stylolites in the limestones. This is supported by the presence of small calcite veins and stylolites in some samples, as well as the fact that the framboidal oxides were formerly sulphides (mostly pyrite), implying that the majority of the iron oxides observed in the limestones were authigenic. These processes indicate that chemical remanent magnetization caused by the growth of magnetic minerals related to tectonic fluid migration was most likely the mechanism for the limestone remagnetization.

Late Mesozoic subduction-accretion in the southern Qiangtang: Insights from the Sumxi igneous complex of west-central Tibet

Knowledge of the evolution of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean is crucial for reconstructing the paleography of the Tethyan Realm, given its significance as a key component of the eastern Tethys. Nonetheless, there has been uncertainty regarding both the timing and the processes involved in the closure of this ocean. This study focused on a 110−106 Ma igneous complex comprising basalts−basaltic andesites, trachyandesites, and granodiorites from the Sumxi area in the western part of the Qiangtang terrane of west-central Tibet. The basalts−basaltic andesites have SiO2 contents of 52.5−58.7 wt% and MgO contents of 2.89−4.63 wt%, and exhibit some arc-like geochemical signatures. However, these rocks also have elevated Nb contents (>10 ppm) and Nb/La ratios (>0.5), as well as enriched Sr-Nd isotopic composition [εNd(t) = −7.40 to −6.00], implying that they are products of a mantle source metasomatized by adakitic melts. The trachyandesites are characterized by intermediate compositions (SiO2 = 63.6−65.2 wt%), high Mg number (40−60), and more enriched εNd(t) values (−8.37 to −7.49). Comparing their geochemical composition to that of mélange rocks, it is postulated that these trachyandesites were formed through the partial melting of a mantle source including mélange matrix rocks within a subduction zone. The granodiorites exhibit adakitic geochemical features (Sr = 830.14−1032.70 ppm, Y = 14.86−15.37 ppm, Sr/Y = 54−68), indicating that they originated from the partial melting of a thickened lower crust in a continental arc setting. Our results, in combination with a synthesis of tectonomagmatism along the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone, provide convincing evidence for subduction of an oceanic plateau and subsequent slab roll-back. The Sumxi igneous complex, with its clear arc affinity, suggests that the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean, or at least its western part, remained open until the late Early Cretaceous (ca. 106 Ma).

Detrital zircon U-Pb dating of Late Mesozoic strata in the Junggar Basin, NW China: Implications for the timing of collision between the Karakoram-Lhasa Block and the Eurasian continent

As a sensitive marker of plate collision events, intraplate compressional deformation can be used to provide a unique regional perspective for the contemporaneous complicated tectonic evolution at the plate margin. Two regional intraplate deformation and uplift events of the late Middle Jurassic and Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous in the Junggar Basin were revealed through seismic interpretation and geological profiles, and both of them correspond to unconformity in the sedimentary successions. Detrital zircons from Jurassic and Cretaceous strata in the eastern margin of Junggar Basin were selected for LA-ICP MS U-Pb dating. Combined with previous detrital zircon U-Pb dating data, a prominent, time-continuous group of syn-depositional detrital zircons has been discovered in the Jurassic-Cretaceous strata of the Junggar basin, and their discontinuous distribution in the strata above and below the unconformity restricts the precise timing of the corresponding regional intraplate deformation to ca.166-157Ma and ca.151-129Ma, respectively, which coincide well with tectono-magmatic events in southern Tibet. Based on previous apatite fission track dating data in Sayan-Siberia orogenic belt and Tianshan-Beishan orogenic belt, we suggest that stages of regional intracontinental deformation in the Junggar Basin and its periphery are related to compressive events on the southern margin of Eurasia. Among them, the first stage of intraplate deformation during ca. 166-157Ma with shorter duration and slighter intensity may be controlled by the collision of the Karakoram-Lhasa Block with the South Pamir Block and the second during ca.151-129 Ma with longer duration and more intensity may signify the main process of Lhasa and Qiangtang collision and the final full closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethys Ocean.

Lithospheric electrical structure across the Bangong-Nujiang Suture in northern tibet revealed by magnetotelluric

Competing hypotheses have been proposed to explain the subduction polarity of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean and the formation of the high-conductivity anomaly beneath the Qiangtang terrane. However, the lithospheric architecture of the northern Tibetan Plateau is still poorly understood due to inhospitable environments and topography. Therefore, in the winter of 2021, a 440 km long, SN-trending broadband magnetotelluric (MT) profile was recorded in northern Tibet to detect its regional lithospheric structure. The nonlinear conjugate gradients algorithm is conducted to invert the individual TM mode data. A reliable 2D electrical model was obtained by ablation processing and analysis of broadband magnetotelluric data to test the lithospheric electrical structure and dynamics between the northern Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes. The inversion results reveal the lithospheric structure at a depth of 100 km in northern Tibet, which synthesizes geological, geochemical and deep seismic reflection evidence and firmly identifies that the trace of the south-dipping conductor mainly resulted from the southward subduction of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean under the Lhasa terrane and the trace of the north-dipping conductor likely due to the northward subduction of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean under the Qiangtang terrane. In addition, the magnetotelluric profile also images a high-conductivity lithospheric-scale anticline beneath the central Qiangtang terrane, which may correspond to the upwelling of postcollisional magmatism triggered by northward subduction of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean under the Qiangtang terrane, aqueous fluid and/or partial melting.

Subduction initiation of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean, Tibetan Plateau

• The northward subduction initiation of the meso -Tethys Ocean was diachronous from the east (∼240–230 Ma) to the west (213–194 Ma). • The collision and slab breakoff during the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean were vital to the northward subduction initiation. • The southward subduction of the meso -Tethys Ocean was initiated no later than the Middle Triassic . • The southward subduction was attributed to the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and the spreading of the NeoTethys Ocean. The initiation of subduction is widely recognized as a critical process associated with the evolution of the meso -Tethys Ocean. Here, we present zircon U–Pb, Lu–Hf isotope, and whole-rock geochemical data for a suite of Triassic–Jurassic magmatic rocks from the central Tibetan Plateau, with the aim of gaining insights into the subduction initiation of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean (BNTO). Early Triassic trachyandesite (248 Ma) from the South Qiangtang terrane resemble intraplate magma and probably resulted from magmatic activity at the passive continental margin during the BNTO opening. Late Triassic S-type granodiorite (220 Ma) and Middle Jurassic SSZ-type gabbro (∼165 Ma) from the South Qiangtang terrane may result from the northward subduction of the BNTO oceanic lithosphere. Jurassic granitoids (I and S type; 193–177 Ma) and metamorphic rocks (179–174 Ma) from the Amdo and Jiayuqiao subterranes are related to the northward subduction of the BNTO oceanic lithosphere. Middle–Late Jurassic diorites (164–162 Ma) from the Central Lhasa subterrane have geochemical features of continental margin arc magma with a sediment component, and these are derived from the southward subduction of the BNTO oceanic lithosphere. Finally, this Triassic–Jurassic magmatic suite of various geochemical features was combined with the results of previous studies, and we suggest that the initiation of northward BNTO subduction was probably diachronous from the east (∼240–230 Ma) to the west (213–194 Ma). This initiation resulted both from collision and slab breakoff during the closure of the Longmuco–Shuanghu–Lancangjiang Paleo-Tethys Ocean and considerable density and rheology contrasts between the thick oceanic lithosphere and continental lithosphere. The southward subduction was initiated no later than the Middle Triassic and was attributed to the closure of the Sumdo Paleo-Tethys Ocean and the spreading of the Indus–Yarlung Zangbo NeoTethys Ocean.

Early Cretaceous Granitoids Magmatism in the Nagqu Area, Northern Tibet: Constraints on the Timing of the Lhasa–Qiangtang Collision

The timing of the Lhasa–Qiangtang collision following the closure of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean has not been well constrained. An integrated study of whole-rock geochemistry and zircon U–Pb–Hf isotopes was carried out for Early Cretaceous quartz diorite-porphyrites and granites from the Yilashan and Amdo areas, northern Tibet. LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb dating reveal that the Yilashan and Amdo granitoids were emplaced at ~121–110 Ma. These granitic rocks display selective enrichment of light rare earth elements, large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, U) and Th, but depletion of Sr and high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ta, Ti) compared to its neighboring elements. These new data, combined with regional geological setting, show that these igneous rocks were formed under a geodynamic setting of the Lhasa and Qiangtang (–Amdo) collision with oceanic slab breakoff and asthenospheric upwelling. The BNTO had been closed at ~121–110 Ma in the study area. Yilashan-Amdo granitoids roughly yield high (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios and obvious negative εNd(t) and zircon εHf(t) values along with old Nd TDM and zircon Hf TDM2 ages. Together with their variable U–Pb ages, these features indicate a Precambrian “hidden” crustal source beneath the northern Lhasa and Amdo terranes. The YLSS S-type granophyres were derived from partial melting of Paleoproterozoic lower crustal metagraywackes, whereas the YLSZ quartz diorite–porphyrites and the Amdo I- and A-type granites were mainly derived from partial melting of Paleo–Mesoproterozoic lower crustal mafic rocks with a certain amount of addition of mantle-derived melts. Minor amounts of the materials originated from the Amdo orthogneisses may also be involved in the formation of the YLSZ quartz diorite–porphyrites and the Amdo I-type granites. In addition, the Yilashan ophiolite was intruded by the ~112–108 Ma granophyric and quartz diorite–porphyritic intrusions before its final emplacement into the surrounding strata.

Terminal stage of divergent double subduction: Insights from Early Cretaceous magmatic rocks in the Gerze area, central Tibet

Divergent double subduction (DDS) plays an important role in facilitating tectonic processes such as ocean closure, accretion and amalgamation of magmatic arcs, and continental growth. However, DDS geodynamics remain poorly constrained, especially its evolution and the accompanying magmatism at the terminal stage. According to geological and geophysical data, the Meso-Tethys Ocean (also known as the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean) in central Tibet has been considered a Mesozoic example of DDS, which provides a rare opportunity to evaluate the geodynamic processes of the terminal stage of a DDS system. Here, we present new geochronological, geochemical, and isotopic data of volcanic rocks from the Gerze area in the western segment of the Bangong–Nujiang suture zone (BNSZ). Combined with previous data, we found that the ca. 105 Ma magmatic rocks in the Gerze area are distributed not only along the two sides of the BNSZ but also as manifold types. On the northern side, the magmatism ca. 105 Ma varied, including A-type rhyolites, bajaitic latites, high-Nb basalts, N-MORB-type basalts, adakites and bimodal volcanic rocks, which originated from sources including a sinking oceanic slab, asthenospheric mantle, metasomatized mantle and overlying continental crust. The lithology on the southern side only includes A-type rhyolite and magnesia-rich andesite and adakitic intrusions. Spatial and compositional variations in ca. 105 Ma magmatism should have been the response to slab breakoff, which may have occurred only in the northern branch of the Meso-Tethys oceanic slab after ocean closure. Our results not only verify the existence of slab breakoff in the classical DDS model but also emphasize that breakoff can cause upwelling of the subslab asthenosphere, which leads to a complex magmatic response. • Manifold magmatism from the Gerze area, central Tibet, is active at ca. 105 Ma. • The ca. 105 Ma Gerze magmatic rocks record a slab breakoff event. • Slab breakoff plays an important role in the divergent double subduction system.

Cretaceous uplift history of the Tibetan Plateau: Insights from the transition of marine to terrestrial facies in central Tibet

The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau has been widely associated with India-Asia continental collision during the Cenozoic. However, recent studies have proposed that a proto-Tibetan Plateau in central Tibet was elevated during the late Mesozoic. This paper improves that understanding by focusing on the Cretaceous terrestrial strata in the Gerze area of central Tibet. Our studies suggest that the Qushenla Formation in the Nare area contains alluvial fan conglomerate intercalated with rhyolitic ignimbrite and vesicular rhyolite. Zircon UPb dating of rhyolitic ignimbrite (103.9 ± 1.4 Ma) and two granitoid boulders of conglomerate (106.0 ± 1.6 and 106.1 ± 1.5) indicate that the Qushenla Formation was deposited during the late Albian. The compositions of the Qushenla Formation conglomerate were dominated by hypabyssal intrusions on the southern Qiangtang terrane, which recorded a rapid uplift and denudation process in the late Albian, accompanied by intense volcanic eruptions. The second set of terrestrial strata is the Upper Cretaceous Jingzhushan Formation alluvial fan-braided river deposits, which can be divided into a lower conglomerate member (Member 1) and a upper sandstone member (Member 2). The large amount of bioclastic limestone fragments in the Member 1 show that they come from the Upper Cretaceous Langshan Formation in the central and northern Lhasa subterranes. While in the Member 2, abundant limestone debris, detrital zircon yielding Jurassic–Cretaceous ages with εHf(t) values between −18.6 and + 8.4, and occurrence of volcanic and ancient zircon grains indicate a volcanic-sedimentary source located in the central and northern Lhasa subterranes, with some input from the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone. This suggests that the central and northern Lhasa subterranes experienced rapid crustal uplift in the Late Cretaceous, thus ending the marine sedimentary environment since the Jurassic. Based on the temporal and spatial sedimentary characteristics of the Qushenla and Jingzhushan formations as well as the regional data, our integrated study suggests that the central plateau (Lhasa and southern Qiangtang terranes) experienced a complex uplift history during the Aptian-Turonian, with southwards stepwise growth in time and space. Furthermore, the uplift mechanism of the central plateau is complex, which was controlled by the diachronous closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean from east to west during the Early Cretaceous, and by the far-field forces associated with northwards subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean during the Late Cretaceous.

Petrogenesis of an Early Cretaceous Xiabie Co I‐type Granite in Southern Qiangtang, Tibet: Evidence from Geochemistry, Geochronology, Rb‐Sr, Sm‐Nd, Lu‐Hf and Pb isotopes

AbstractCretaceous magmatism is widely distributed on both sides of the Bangong–Nujiang suture zone (BNSZ). These rocks record the subduction to closure history of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean (BNO) and the collisional history between the Lhasa (LS) and Qiangtang (QT) terranes. The Xiabie Co granite in Nyima County, which located on the southern margin of the QT terrane, Tibet. In this study, whole‐rock geochemistry; Rb‐Sr, Sm‐Nd, and Pb isotopes; and laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) zircon U‐Pb ages and Lu‐Hf isotopes of the Xiabie Co granite in the Nyima area have been studied to constrain its petrogenesis and tectonic setting. Our study can help explain the tectonic evolution of the BNSZ and crust‐mantle interaction. Zircon U‐Pb dating indicates that the granite was emplaced at ca. 120 Ma. The granite contains a small amount of hornblende and has high silicon (SiO2 = 73.97–78.03 wt%), potassium (K2O = 4.75–6.53 wt%), and total alkali (K2O + Na2O = 7.98–8.98 wt%) contents; low calcium content (CaO = 2.33–4.11 wt%); and variable A/CNK (1.00–1.18) and A/NK (1.09–1.22) values. The P2O5 content of the granite negatively correlated with the SiO2 content. Thus, the Xiabie Co granite is a weakly peraluminous I‐type granite belonging to the high‐K calc‐alkaline to Shoshone series. It is enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and relatively depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREEs), with LREE/HREE ratios of 8.03–16.40 and LaN/YbN ratios of 10.2–27.1. Samples show right‐leaning chondrite‐normalized rare earth element patterns with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu∗ = 0.67–0.76). The primitive‐mantle‐normalized trace element spider diagrams of the samples are right‐leaning zigzag curves, showing relative enrichment in large‐ion lithophile elements (LILEs, e.g., Rb, Th, U, and K) and depletion in high‐field‐strength elements (HFSEs, e.g., Nb, P, Ti, and Yb) and displaying striking Sr and Ba negative anomalies. The granite εHf(t) values were positive (2.9–9.9), whereas the whole‐rock εNd(t) values were negative (–2.841 to –2.33). The calculated (87Sr/86Sr)t, (206Pb/204Pb)t, (207Pb/204Pb)t, and (208Pb/204Pb)t values are 0.7014–0.7057 (0.7044 on average), 18.422–18.851 (18.670 on average), 15.625–15.642 (15.633 on average), and 38.332–38.681 (39.571 on average), respectively. On the basis of the aforementioned data, we propose that the Xiabie Co granite was derived from a primitive magma that originated from partial melting of juvenile lower crust with the addition of mantle materials. In addition, strong fractional crystallization occurred during the rock‐forming process. Given the geodynamic setting, our new data, together with previously reported achievements, imply that the Xiabie Co granite was formed during the LS–QT collision.

Compositional signatures of ophiolitic rocks from the Dongco massif: Novel insights into the evolution of the central Tibetan Meso-Tethyan oceanic plateau

The role of the Meso-Tethyan oceanic plateau in the growth of the Tibetan Plateau is debated. In this paper, we report coexistence of large-scale mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-like and enormous ocean island basalt (OIB)-type mafic rocks from the Dongco ophiolitic rocks of the Bangong–Nujiang Suture Zone. The MORB-like rocks host tholeiitic geochemical characterizes, and have supra-subduction zone affinity such as enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs), depletions in high field strength elements, high εNd(t) values (+6.5 to +9.5) and low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7033–0.7050). The OIB-type rocks have an alkaline affinity and are characterized by enrichments in LILEs and light rare earth elements, strongly negative Sr anomalies, variable εNd(t) values of −3.7 to +7.3, and low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios ranging from 0.7034 to 0.7050. Metamorphic zircons from amphibolites in the sole of the ophiolitic rocks yielded UPb ages of 104–100 Ma. Detrital zircons from the upper Cretaceous sandstone of the Abushan Formation (K2ab) yielded young UPb ages of 100–86 Ma. Considering the regional geology, we suggest that the Dongco MORB-like rocks were derived from a depleted mantle source and formed from an intra-oceanic subduction-related setting, representing remnants of normal oceanic crust, whereas the OIB-type rocks were derived from an enriched mantle source representing remnants of a Meso-Tethyan oceanic plateau. Our preferred hypothesis is that the Meso-Tethyan oceanic plateau experienced a phase of accretion at 104–100 Ma, which probably increased local subduction erosion of the upper plate and providing provenance for the deposition of the K2ab sandstone. The maximum depositional ages of K2ab sandstone constraint the minimum ages for closure of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean most likely at 100–86 Ma.

Late Early Cretaceous magmatic constraints on the timing of closure of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean, Central Tibet

As one of the most important parts of the eastern Tethys, the evolution of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean (BNTO) has important geological implications for paleogeographic reconstructions of the Tethyan Realm. However, the closure time of the BNTO remains highly debated. Here, we report geochronological, petrological and geochemical data from three newly identified undeformed stitching plutons that intrude a north–south-oriented section of ophiolitic mélanges in the middle–eastern parts of the Bangong–Nujiang suture zone (BNSZ), central Tibet. The stitching plutons comprise the Chaqu diorite–granite association, the Jiang Co granite, and the Konglong diorite porphyry. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SMIS) zircon UPb dating suggests that these three plutons were emplaced at ca. 116–112 Ma. The stitching plutons show heterogeneous Sr–Nd–Hf–O isotopic compositions. The Chaqu diorites have initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios varying from 0.7062 to 0.7064 and εNd(t) values from −2.0 to −1.6, and slightly high zircon δ18O (6.2–6.8‰) and positive zircon εHf(t) (+2.6 to +7.4) values. The Chaqu granites show high initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.7064–0.7065) ratios and low εNd(t) (−2.3 to −2.1) values, and elevated zircon δ18O (6.2–7.3‰) values and variable zircon εHf(t) (−1.7 to +4.9) values, similar to those of the associated Chaqu diorites. The Jiang Co granites exhibit higher initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.7085–0.7094) ratios and negative εNd(t) (−8.33 to −8.27) values, and variable zircon δ18O (4.8‰ to 6.0‰) and εHf(t) (−6.9 to −2.0) values. The Konglong diorite porphyries have initial 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios ranging from 0.7069 to 0.7075 and negative εNd(t) values ranging from −4.2 to −4.1, and high zircon δ18O (9.0‰ to 9.8‰) and variable zircon εHf(t) (−7.3 to +0.7) values. Geochemical evidence indicates that they were derived from different magma sources that included varying proportions of mantle and crustal components. The Chaqu diorites were derived by partial melting of an ancient metasomatized mantle source, and the Chaqu granites were formed by fractional crystallization of the Chaqu dioritic magmas. The Jiang Co granites were generated by partial melting of low δ18O high-temperature hydrothermally altered ancient continental crust. The Konglong diorite porphyries were likely generated by partial melting of high-δ18O enriched lithospheric mantle. In combination with data from adjacent ophiolites, magmatic rocks, and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, we suggest that the stitching plutons were generated in a post-collisional setting induced by upwelling of asthenospheric mantle due to slab breakoff beneath the BNSZ. Our data provide an important new upper age limit for the time of collision between the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes, i.e., the latest closure time for the BNTO.

Mesozoic multiple magmatic events in Bangor area: Constraints on the tectonic evolution of Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean

The Bangor area is located in the middle part of the Bangong–Nujiang Suture Zone (BNSZ), where a large number of Middle Jurassic‐Early Cretaceous magmatic rocks are exposed, and is a key area for studying the tectonic evolution of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean (BNO). However, the arc magmatic system triggered by the southward subduction of the BNO has not been systematically identified in the northern margin of the Lhasa Terrane, and the timing of initial subduction and closure is still controversial. In this study, four granite, two amphibolite, and one gabbro samples from the Bangor area yield two clusters intrusive ages of 162–168 Ma and 121–133 Ma. The Stages I and II granites show whole‐rock geochemistry similar to those of continent arc magmatism, characterized by enrichment in large ionic lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., Th, Rb, K) and depletion in high field strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Nb, Ta, P, Ti). The Stage I magmatic rocks consist of granodiorite, amphibolite, and gabbro and have similar zircon εHf(t) values of −10.1 to −3.5, which may be formed by partial melting of enriched mantle wedge related to the southward subduction of the BNO. The Stage II highly differentiated I‐type granites show positive zircon εHf(t) values of +1.5 to +9.9, which are considered the product of highly differentiated processes via the mixed magma derived from depleted mantle and lower crustal rocks. The Stage II I‐type granites show negative zircon εHf(t) values of −9.2 to −0.7, which are derived from a mixed magma source generated by partial melting of lower crust and enriched lithospheric mantle. On the basis of data from this study and previous research studies, a four‐stage tectonic evolutionary model of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean is constructed: Stage 1 (190–145 Ma), the northward and southward subduction of BNO formed a series of arc magmatism; Stage 2 (145–135 Ma), a magmatism lull occurred on the north side due to the subduction effect of the ocean plateau, while the southward subduction still continued; Stage 3 (135–116 Ma), the roll‐back of subducted slab enhanced the magmatism in this stage; and Stage 4 (<116 Ma), the closure of BNO lead to the formation of syn‐collisional magmatism.

Middle Triassic volcanic rocks from the Gangdese belt, southern Tibet: petrogenesis and implications for Tethys tectonic evolution

ABSTRACT The voluminous Middle Triassic to Early Jurassic magmatic rocks in the southern Gangdese belt of Tibet have received wide attention in tracing the subduction history of the Yarlung-Zangbo Neo-Tethys Ocean (YZNTO) and Bangong-Nujiang Tethys Ocean (BNTO). Here we report a suite of volcanic rocks from the Gangdese arc belt and present results from petrological, geochemical and zircon U-Pb-Lu-Hf isotopic studies with a view to constrain their timing and magma source in relation to the Tethys tectonic evolution. Zircon U-Pb data show ages in the range of 237.2–235.0 Ma for the andesitic rocks, representing their eruption ages during the Middle Triassic. Zircon Lu-Hf data display markedly positive εHf(t) values of 11.44–15.99 with the two-stage model ages (TDM C) of 535–241 Ma, suggesting that the magma was derived from depleted mantle or juvenile crust components. Geochemically, the andesitic rocks show low Sr/Y (20.26–43.74) and La/Yb ratios (8.52–14.21) in the absence of Eu anomalies, enrichment in LILEs (K, U, Rb, Ba) and LREEs, and depletion of HFSEs (Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr) and HREEs, suggesting normal arc andesite with emplacement in a continental island arc setting. Accordingly, we infer that these rocks were formed by partial melting of a young oceanic crust and sediments in the transitional zone between plagioclase and garnet stability within subduction-related setting, followed by fractional crystallization of amphibole and apatite. In conjunction with previous studies on the Tethys tectonic evolution, we argue that the southern margin of the Gangdese belt during the Middle Triassic might be unrelated with the northward subduction of the YZNTO and southward subduction of the BNTO. Our results suggest that the Middle Triassic magmatic suites in the southern margin of the south Gangdese belt were generated through the southward subduction of the Zhikong-Sumdo Tethys Ocean.

Intra-continental boninite-series volcanic rocks from the Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone, Central Tibet

The boninitic volcanic rocks from Rutog, western Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone (BNSZ), are characterized by high MgO, SiO2 but low TiO2 contents and interpreted as the products of intra-oceanic subduction in earlier studies. Recently, we discovered new breccia-like boninitic volcanic rocks (mainly trachyandesite and trachyte) that overlie the Rutog ophiolitic peridotites in BNSZ. These volcanic rocks not only show typical boninitic petrographical features of porphyritic texture in which euhedral augite phenocrysts (ca. 5 vol%) are embedded in fine-grained groundmass composed of pyroxene, plagioclase, quartz and minor glass, but also display strong boninitic geochemical affinities with high Mg# (61.59–67.90), Al2O3/TiO2 (40.31–55.97) ratios and low TiO2 (0.26–0.35 wt%) contents. In addition, their rare earth elemental patterns show a slight right-dip pattern with (La/Gd)N values of ~1.28 and (Gd/Yb)N values of ~1.31. Given the evolutionary trend from magnesium-rich intermediate to acid series, the boninite-series are therefore used to describe the vlocanic rocks. Zircon U-Pb isotopic dating on these boninite-series volcanic rocks yielded an age of ca. 79.3 ± 2.0 Ma, after the closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean (BNTO) that occurred before 96 Ma. The newly recognized boninite-series volcanic rocks probably formed more than 20 Ma after the latest regional magmatism related to subduction process and thus the subduction setting is not suitable for these boninite-series volcanic rocks. The enrichment in compatible elements and depletion in high field elements indicate the Rutog boninite-series originated from a severely depleted mantle while several lines of evidence (e.g., the enrichment in light rare earth elements, large iron lithophile elements) imply that the mantle source has been modified by continental crust. Given the widespread Cretaceous high Sr/Y magmatic rocks within BNSZ, the Rutog boninite-series rocks may provide an example of the crust-mantle interaction as a result of the delamination in a partially thickened and cratonized convergent margin during the late Cretaceous within BNSZ, central Tibetan Plateau.

Geochemistry and geochronology of Pengco subduction‐related ophiolites, Tibet: Implications for Dongkaco microcontinent in the Bangong–Nujiang suture zone

The identification of a microcontinent in Bangong–Nujiang suture zone (BNSZ) is important to understanding the tectonic evolution of Bangong–Nujiang Tethys Ocean (BNTO). Subduction‐related ophiolite is one of the keys to discriminate a microcontinent in suture zones, which can be generated during the oceanic subduction beneath the microcontinent. Generally, ophiolites in the adjacent area of a microcontinent would show characteristics of a volcanic arc, while ophiolites in adjacent area of an ocean show characteristics of a fore‐arc. North Pengco ophiolites (NPOs) and South Pengco ophiolites (SPOs) were collected in the central section of BNSZ, and dated at 115.0–111.5 Ma by SHRIMP II. According to their trace element characteristics, NPOs were determined to have formed at a setting of subduction‐related volcanic arc and affected by slab‐derived fluids or melts. The diagram based on the Ce versus Ce/Y shows that NPOs originated from the partial melting of spinel peridotites. On the other hand, SPOs were generated from the partial melting of ultra‐depleted mantle at a setting of subduction‐related fore‐arc on the basis of extraordinarily low REEs summation and HFSEs (e.g., Zr, Ti, Nb and Ta), relatively high concentrations of compatible elements (e.g., Cr, Ni), large ratios of CaO/TiO2 (37.67–437.50) and Al2O3/TiO2 (20.78–424.50), which were also affected by slab‐derived fluids. Based on the relative location of NPOs and SPOs, it reasonably proposed that a northward subduction of a minor oceanic basin had occurred at the Early Cretaceous, trigged by the Dongkaco microcontinent (DMC). In reverse, these ophiolites provide evidence for the existence of DMC in BNTO. Combining with other subduction‐related ophiolites developed in BNSZ, BNTO might have comprised of several minor oceanic basins separated by some blocks like DMC in the central and west sections, rather than a unified ocean basin.

Hydrocarbon-seep deposits in the lower Permian Angie Formation, Central Lhasa Block, Tibet

Methane seepage along continental margins has been linked to climatic warming, yet it is uncertain whether such seepage took place during the Permian, a period that witnessed a transition from an icehouse to a greenhouse world. To address this issue, we investigated calcareous concretions and layers within mudstones/shales of the Kungurian Angie Formation in the Xainza area, central Tibet. A combination of petrographic, mineralogical, elemental, and carbon‑sulfur isotopic analyses provide strong evidence for a hydrocarbon-seep origin of these carbonates, with thermogenic methane and crude oil being the most likely carbon sources. Our dataset also indicates that, although fueled by a common deep-buried hydrocarbon reservoir, these layers and concretions experienced different biogeochemical processes due to variable rates of cold-seep fluid flux combined with persistently low sulfate concentrations in bottom waters of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean. A biogeochemical switch from sulfate-dependent to iron oxide-coupled anaerobic oxidation of methane in the sulfate-methane transition zone, likely triggered by sulfate exhaustion, was inferred to affect carbonate layer formation near the sediment-water interface. If true, this switch, together with common vent structures, would have resulted in escape of large amounts of methane directly to the ocean-atmosphere system. The hydrocarbon seeps in the central Lhasa Block was approximately coeval with rapid climate warming in the peri-Gondwanan region during the early Kungurian. Although further investigations are required in the future, this study demonstrates a possible causal relationship between regional tectonic evolution, hydrocarbon seepage, and global climate change.
