A miniaturized microstrip antenna with tunable double band-notched characteristics for UWB applications

This paper proposes the step-by-step design procedure for obtaining independent dual band-notch performance, which provides a valuable method for designing tunable dual band-notched UWB antenna. The proposed antenna consists of the semicircle ring-like radiating patch with an elliptical-shaped slot and double split ring resonators on the top surface of the substrate and defected ground structure (DGS) on the bottom surface of the substrate. The operating frequencies ranged from 1.3 to 11.6 GHz (S11 < − 10 dB). By loading varactor diodes at the gap of the resonators structure and changing the varactor diode’s reverse bias voltage(0–30 V), a wider band-notched tuning range from 2.47–4.19 to 4.32–5.96 GHz can be achieved, which covers the whole WiMAX band and WLAN band. The experimental results agree well with the simulated results. The notched gain at notched frequency points is about − 5.3 dBi and − 5 dBi, demonstrating that the narrow-band interference signal could be efficiently suppressed. The security of UWB communication systems can be further enhanced. Meanwhile, the selection of varactor diode and DC bias circuit are fully considered. Hence, the accuracy of the experiment results and antenna operating performance have been improved. Furthermore, the proposed antenna only has an electrical size of 0.26λ*0.19λ at 1.3 GHz. Compared to the related reported antennas, the proposed antenna has achieved a simpler structure, low profile, compact size, tunable dual band-notched characteristics, extensive independent tunable range, and good band-notched performance simultaneously, to the best of our knowledge. The proposed antenna is believed to have a valuable prospect in UWB communication, Wireless Body Area Network, Industry Science Medicine, mobile communication applications, etc.

Elliptical Annular Slot Loaded Trapezoidal Dipole Antenna for Band-Notched UWB Applications

In this paper, a semi-elliptical annular slot loaded trapezoidal dipole antenna with band-notched characteristics for UWB applications is designed. A microstrip feedline consisting of multiple feedline sections is used for improving the impedance matching. The band-notched characteristics for WLAN band are achieved by loading the trapezoidal dipole arms with semi-elliptical annular slots. The designed antenna structure has an operating range from 3.5-12.4 GHz(109%) with band-rejection in the frequency range of 5-6 GHz. Nearly omnidirectional patterns are achieved for the designed antenna structure. The designed antenna structure provided an average peak gain of 2.12 dB over the entire frequency range except in the notched band where it reduced to -2.4 dB. The experimental and simulation results are observed to be in good agreement. An improved bandwidth performance with miniaturized dimensions as compared to earlier reported antenna structures is achieved.

A Novel Bow-Tie Antenna with Triple Band-Notched Characteristics for UWB Applications

This paper presents the design of a compact bow-tie antenna with triple band notched characteristics for UWB applications. The proposed antenna can operate from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz with VSWR - 8.4 GHz) centered at 8.1 GHz, the CSRR2 rejects the WLAN band (5.15 - 5.85 GHz) centered at 5.6 GHz, and the CSRR3 rejects the band (4.10 - 4.47 GHz) centered at 4.32 GHz. Compared with recent design, this antenna is more compact, and presents better simulation results of its characteristics. Our newly designed antenna is a potential candidate for application in UWB communication systems.

Compact monopole antenna with triple band-notched characteristics for UWB applications

A novel ultrawideband antenna with triple band rejection characteristic is proposed in this article. The antenna consists of a U-shaped monopole antenna and a modified grounded plane. To realize triple band-notched characteristics, a pair of I-shaped and L-shaped stubs embedded in the square slots of the ground plane and resonant open-circuited stubs placed adjacent to the antenna edges are used. Surface current distributions are described to analyze the effects of these stubs. Modified version of the antenna is also designed to reduce the overall metallic surface of the antenna while maintaining its band-notched characteristics. Measured results show that this antenna operates from 2.77 to 11.38 GHz for voltage standing wave ratio less than 2, except the triple notched bands (3.27–3.75, 5.51–5.96, and 6.95–7.65 GHz). © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel Miniature Printed Monopole Antenna with Dual Tunable Band-Notched Characteristics for UWB Applications

The dual tunable band-notched characteristics are achieved on a novel printed monopole antenna operating over 2.6–11 GHz bandwidth with VSWR < 2, to minimize potential interference with the bands of 3.3–3.7 GHz for WIMAX and 5.15–5.825 GHz for WLAN. Two notched-bands are created by the two slots etched in its radiation patch and ground plane, respectively. Their central frequencies can be easily tuned individually by placing a capacitor and an inductor on each of the slots. The antenna has been simulated, measured and discussed. The measured results agree reasonably with the simulated ones, showing good impedance matching, stable gain, small group delay, and near omnidirectional patterns in the H-plane across the operation band. The designed antenna has the miniature dimension of 18 mm × 18 mm × 0.8 mm.
