Metal(loid) bioaccessibility and risk assessment of ashfall deposit from Popocatépetl volcano, Mexico

Ash emission from volcanic eruptions affects the environment, society, and human health. This study shows the total concentration and lung bioaccessible fraction of eight potential toxic metal(loid)s in five Popocatépetl ashfall samples. Mineralogical phases and particle size distribution of the ashfall were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) techniques, respectively. The bioaccessibility test of Gamble solution (GS) and Artificial Lysosomal Fluid (ALF) were conducted to simulate extracellular (pH 7) and intracellular (pH 4.5) conditions, respectively. The studied metal(loid)s showed the following total concentration (mg kg−1): 1.98 (As), 0.17 (Cd), 134.09 (Cr), 8.66 (Cu), 697.33 (Mn), 55.35 (Ni), 8.77 (Pb), and 104.10 (Zn). Geochemical indices suggested that some metal(loid)s are slightly enriched compared to the local soil background concentrations. Several mineralogical phases were identified in the collected ashfall deposits, such as plagioclase, pyroxene, and Fe–Ti oxide, among others. According to the risk assessment results, the non-carcinogenic risk related to ashfall exposure returns an HQ > 1 for children. In contrast, the estimation of carcinogenic risk was found to be within the tolerable limit. Metal(loid)s showed low bioaccessibility (< 30%) in GS and ALF, with the highest values found in ALF solution for As (12.18%) and Cu (7.57%). Despite their metal-bioaccessibility, our findings also showed that dominant ash particle size ranged between fine (< 2.5 μm) and extremely fine (< 1 μm), considered highly inhalable fractions. The results obtained in this work indicate that volcanic ashes are bioinsoluble and biodurable, and exhibit low bioaccessibility when in contact with lung human fluids.

Improving the reliability of using rare earth elements as soil erosion tracers

Rare earth elements (REEs) have been successfully used as tracers in field-scale erosion experiments to provide spatially distributed erosion data for process-based soil erosion models. This study aimed to demonstrate how differences in the erodibility of individual REEs naturally present in the soil affect the evaluation of data from such experiments.A four-year field experiment was carried out at an experimental site used for arable farming to investigate soil erosion. The concentrations of tracer REEs (Pr, Sm, Gd, Ho, Er, and Yb) and reference REEs (all other REEs) were evaluated and compared both in the soil and eroded sediment.The tracer REE concentrations in the eroded sediments were consistently significantly higher than the average background soil concentrations. Even when compared with the maximum values of background soil concentrations, enrichment of Er, Sm, and Ho in the sediment was still evident. However, in some cases, the reference REE concentrations in the sediment were often higher than the maximum soil background concentrations by more than 10%. These enrichment differences indicate the varying erodibility of individual REEs during erosion. The elements chosen as tracers could also be enriched in the sediment from their natural background sources, thus influencing the measured concentration values in the sediment after tagging.This study demonstrated that different REEs naturally present in soil exhibit varying degrees of erodibility, which affects data evaluation in soil erosion tracing experiments using REE oxides as tracers. Therefore, the reliable application of the REE tracer method can only be suggested under certain requirements defined in this study.

Insight into the availability and desorption kinetics of Se and Cd in naturally-rich soils using diffusive gradients in thin-films technique

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of selenium (Se)-rich soils may jeopardize the nutritional benefits of Se-biofortified crops. This study employed diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique and DIFS (DGT-induced fluxes in soils) model to understand the interdependency and driving factors of Se and Cd distribution and desorption kinetics across 50 soils from south China with naturally elevated levels. DGT-labile Se was the highest (up to 2.66 μg L−1) in non-carbonate/shale-derived soils, while Cd was maximal (5.53 μg L−1) in carbonate-based soils, reflecting soil background concentrations and soil characteristics. Over one-third of the soils showed labile Se:Cd molar ratio below 0.7, suggesting Cd phytotoxicity risks. The DIFS-derived response times (Tc) and desorption rate constants (k−1) suggested that Se was resupplied to the soil solution faster than Cd in soils with higher pH and SOM level, but Se resupply was still restricted due to the rapid depletion of its labile pool. As the first study of Se and Cd release kinetics in soils, our results reveal dependence on soil parent materials, with low labile Se:Cd soils presenting greater Cd hazards. By elucidating Se and Cd lability and interactions in soils, our findings help to inform management strategies to balance reduced Cd risk with adequate Se availability.

The Uptake of Rare Trace Elements by Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.).

Technological development has increased the use of chemical elements that have hitherto received scant scientific attention as environmental contaminants. Successful management of these rare trace elements (RTEs) requires elucidation of their mobility in the soil-plant system. We aimed to determine the capacity of Lolium perenne (a common pasture species) to tolerate and accumulate the RTEs Be, Ga, In, La, Ce, Nd, and Gd in a fluvial recent soil. Cadmium was used as a reference as a well-studied contaminant that is relatively mobile in the soil-plant system. Soil was spiked with 2.5-283 mg kg-1 of RTE or Cd salts, representing five, 10, 20, and 40 times their background concentrations in soil. For Be, Ce, In, and La, there was no growth reduction, even at the highest soil concentrations (76, 1132, 10.2, and 874 mg kg-1, respectively), which resulted in foliar concentrations of 7.1, 12, 0.11, and 50 mg kg-1, respectively. The maximum no-biomass reduction foliar concentrations for Cd, Gd, Nd, and Ga were 0.061, 0.1, 7.1, and 11 mg kg-1, respectively. Bioaccumulation coefficients ranged from 0.0030-0.95, and increased Ce < In < Nd ≅ Gd < La ≅ Be ≅ Ga < Cd. Beryllium and La were the RTEs most at risk of entering the food chain via L. perenne, as their toxicity thresholds were not reached in the ranges tested, and the bioaccumulation coefficient (plant/soil concentration quotient) trends indicated that uptake would continue to increase at higher soil concentrations. In contrast, In and Ce were the elements least likely to enter the food chain. Further research should repeat the experiments in different soil types or with different plant species to test the robustness of the findings.

Spatial distribution and ecological risk assessment of heavy metal elements in rock‐soil in the mountainous areas of Southwest China: A case study of Xichang

This study employs the Muller geological accumulation index method and the Hakanson risk assessment method in combination with ArcGIS technology to assess the potential heavy metal pollution in soil. The study aims to investigate the geochemical characteristics, pollution degree, and potential ecological risks associated with soil heavy metal element content and distribution across various geological formations. The concentrations of eight heavy metals, namely Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn, Hg, As, and Cr, were analysed by collecting samples of the soil layer, parent material layer, and parent rock layer. The proportions of samples with different risk levels are accurately calculated to locate areas with high pollution risks. The findings are as follows: Firstly, the soil pH value in the study area is low, and the Cd and Cr concentrations are 1.38 and 1.20 times the background concentrations in soil in Sichuan Province, respectively. Moreover, Cu, Cd, Ni, Zn, and Cr concentrations are 1.23, 1.10, 1.20, 1.10, and 1.55 times the background concentrations in soil in China. Secondly, the distribution of heavy metal elements varies across different geological formation units, and the heavy metal contents of different samples from the same formation also varies significantly. The concentrations of heavy metal elements are influenced by different geological formations, with the pedogenic parent rock in the soil determining the initial concentrations of heavy metal elements. Thirdly, the spatial distribution of heavy metal elements indicates a good spatial distribution coupling relationship among the soil layer, parent material layer, and rock layer. The study suggests that the contents of the eight heavy metal elements in the soil inherited the characteristics of the parent material to a large extent and are influenced and controlled by the pedogenic parent rock (geological formation). Finally, the evaluation results reveal that all eight heavy metal elements exhibit moderate pollution, with a relatively large distribution area exhibiting moderate Cd, Hg, and As pollution and above. The overall study area exhibits a mild potential ecological risk level, with some areas at a moderate potential ecological risk level, distributed in patches across the study area. Cd and Hg exhibit relatively high potential ecological risks. The potential ecological risks of heavy metals are relatively high in the JKms and Tss units. While the overall quality of the soil in the study area is good, heavy metal pollution and potential ecological risks of some elements are still above ideal levels.

Ecological risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in selenium-rich soil with different land-use types.

Dashan Village area is one of the representative areas in China with high selenium concentration in the natural environment. A total of 133 topsoil samples have been collected in the Dashan Village area to explore the potential toxic elements (PTEs) background concentrations in soils under different land-use types for a comprehensive PTEs risk assessment (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc). The results show that the geometric mean concentrations of As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se and Zn found in the soil of the Dashan Village area were lower than the control standard for soil contamination risk in agricultural land. However, the geometric mean concentrations of Cd exceeded their corresponding standard values. For different land-use types, geometric mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb in the arable soils were higher than in woodland soils and tea garden soils. Based on the potential ecological risk assessment, the woodland, arable and tea garden were at low-risk levels. Cadmium posed the highest ecological risk, while the other PTEs were of low risk in soils. Multiple statistical analyses and geostatistical analysis indicated that the concentrations of Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, Zn and Se originated mainly from natural sources, while the concentrations of Cd, As and Hg could be influenced by anthropogenic activities. These results provide scientific support for the safe utilization and ecological sustainability of selenium-rich land resources.

Spatial distribution and load of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in background soils in Sweden

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are known to be persistent, bioaccumulative, and have adverse health effects, but very little is known about PFAS in the terrestrial environment and factors influencing their distribution. This paper presents one of the first comprehensive studies investigating PFAS (n = 28) in background forest soils (n = 27) on national scale across Sweden. The results showed that 16 of 28 target PFAS were present and all sites contained at least three PFAS compounds, with total concentrations ranging between 0.40 ng/g dry weight (dw) and 6.6 ng/g dw. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) showed the highest detection frequency of 89% and a median concentration of 0.39 ng/g dw. The PFOS loads (ng/m3) showed a distinct spatial distribution, with a significant exponential increase from north to south (R2 = 0.55; p < 0.001) and west to east (R2 = 0.35; p < 0.01). In some parts of Sweden, the compound 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTSA) had a higher median concentration (1.4 ng/g dw), but was in comparison to PFOS more impacted by local sources. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) showed regional clustering of PFAS compositional profiles, indicating that PFAS soil background concentrations are functions of spatial variations at local, regional, and countrywide scale. Such spatial trends have not been observed previously and it could not be deduced whether they are indicative of trends on a global scale, or country-specific and better explained by proximity to densely populated urban areas. An interpolation and extrapolation raster map created from the results was used to calculate the average total PFAS load on Swedish soils. Estimated total load in the top 10-cm soil layer was 2.7 ± 2.4 tons for PFOS and 16 ± 14 tons for ∑PFAS, indicating that soil carries a considerable legacy of past PFAS release.

Global issues in setting legal limits on soil metal contamination: A case study of Chile

The establishment of legal limits for soil contamination with trace elements is a global issue that has not yet been resolved. However, the resolution of any global problem begins at the national level. In this vein, we present the case of Chile, the world's leading copper producer, where soil contamination by trace elements in mining areas has been severe. We evaluated the magnitude of the ecological and human health risks from exposure to arsenic (As), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in soils of the La Ligua and Petorca basins, two important mining areas in Chile. Contrary to what might be expected in soils affected by Cu mining activities, As was identified as the most hazardous element in the studied soils, both in terms of ecological and human health risks. On the other hand, Chile does not currently have specific legislation establishing legal limits on soil contamination with trace elements. Since Chile is geochemically similar to New Zealand, Mexico, and Italy, we used the limits of these three countries as benchmarks. We determined the background concentrations of As, Cu, Zn, and Pb in the soils of the two river basins under study and found that they tend to exceed the limits established by foreign laws. We also found that the differences in background elemental concentrations in the studied soils were primarily due to the varied lithology of soil-forming rocks. This means that absolute “one-limit-fits-all” values of element concentrations may not be adequate to regulate the level of soil contamination in areas affected by mining. As a fundamental first step, it is necessary to establish background soil concentrations of trace elements in each river basin in Chile. It is clear that Chile urgently needs to move from rubber-stamping foreign laws to the development of national legislation on soil metal contamination.

Characterization of Chemical and Bacterial Concentrations in Floor Dust Samples in Southeast Texas Households.

Indoor dust can be a major source of heavy metals, nutrients, and bacterial contamination in residential environments and may cause serious health problems. The goal of this research is to characterize chemical and bacterial contaminants of indoor, settled house dust in the Houston Metropolitan region. To achieve this, a total of 31 indoor dust samples were collected, along with household survey data, which were subsequently analyzed for elemental and bacterial concentrations. Microscopic and geospatial analysis was conducted to characterize and map potential hotspots of contamination. Interestingly Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations of all 31 indoor dust samples were significantly enriched and exceeded soil background concentrations. Furthermore, As, Cd, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the dust samples were significantly correlated to the enteric bacterial load concentrations. Human health assessment revealed that cancer risk values via ingestion for Cd, Cr, and Ni were greater than the acceptable range. Of our 31 dust sample isolates, three Gram-negative and 16 Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria were identified, capable of causing a wide range of diseases. Our results demonstrate that both chemical and bacterial characterization of indoor dust coupled with spatial mapping is essential to assess and monitor human and ecological health risks.

Agricultural application of digestates derived from agricultural and municipal organic wastes: a health risk-assessment for heavy metals

A Human-health Risk Assessment was performed for an agricultural site in North-East Italy undergone digestate application to (i) check the compliance of digestate land spreading with the Italian and European regulations on contaminated agricultural soils and (ii) evaluate how resulting risk estimations can be influenced by the applied modeling assumptions. The assessment estimated the risk related to adults and children intake of Heavy Metals (HM) contained in crops at concentrations estimated by a soil-plant transfer model based on the substance-specific soil-water partition coefficients. Eight different scenarios were investigated, according to different digestate type (from biowaste and agro-industrial byproducts), digestate application techniques and soil background concentrations. Non-risky situations resulted in all scenarios involving digestate application. The totality of calculated non-carcinogenic Hazard Indexes () and carcinogenic total risk () resulted below 0.02 and 3E10−9, respectively. In contrast with the definition, non-carcinogenic risks were associated with the considered soil background concentrations, with s up to 1.7 for child receptors, while carcinogenic risk was calculated below the concern threshold (i.e., < 10−5). Accordingly, this study highlighted (i) non-concerning situations related with lawful application of digestates and (ii) the need to improve the modeling of bioavailability to plant of HMs background content of soil.

Distribution of rare earth elements in soils of contrasting geological and pedological settings to support human health assessment and environmental policies.

Establishing quality reference values (QRVs) for rare earth elements (REEs) in soils is essential for the screening of these emergent contaminants. Currently, Brazil has the second-largest reserve of REEs, but data regarding background concentrations and distributions in soils remain scarce. The aim of this study was to establish the QRVs and assess the spatial distribution of REEs in soils, including REE fractionations and anomalies in (Piauí) state (251,529.186 km2), northeastern Brazil. This study reports the most detailed data on REE geochemistry in Brazilian soils. A total of 243 composite soil samples was collected at 0-20cm depth. The mean background concentrations in soils followed the abundance of the earth's upper crust: Ce > La > Nd > Pr > Sm > Dy > Gd > Er > Yb > Eu > Tb > Lu. The ∑REEs (mg kg-1) showed the following order based on the individual mesoregions of Piauí state: Southeast (262.75) > North and Central-North (89.68) > Southwest (40.33). The highest QRVs were observed in the Southeast mesoregion. The establishment of QRVs based on the mesoregion scale improves data representativeness and the monitoring of natural REE values by identifying hot spots. Geostatistical modeling indicated significant local variability, especially in the Southeast mesoregion. The levels of these elements in this spatial zone are naturally higher than the other values across Piauí state and the mesoregion itself and indicate a high potential to exceed the QRVs. Our approach provides much needed data to help strengthen policies for both human health and environmental protection.

Bioavailability and Ecotoxicity of Lead in Soil: Implications for Setting Ecological Soil Quality Standards.

Ecological soil quality standards for lead (Pb) that account for soil Pb bioavailability have not yet been derived. We derived such standards based on specific studies of the long‐term bioavailability and toxicity of Pb to soil organisms and a compilation of field data on the bioaccumulation of Pb in earthworms. Toxicity thresholds of Pb to plants, invertebrates, or microorganisms vary over more than 2 orders of magnitude, and the lowest values overlap with the range in natural Pb background concentrations in soil. Soils freshly spiked with Pb2+ salts exhibit higher Pb bioavailability and lower toxic thresholds than long‐term aged and leached equivalents. Comparative toxicity tests on leaching and aging effects suggest using a soil Pb threshold that is 4.0 higher, to correct thresholds of freshly spiked soils. Toxicity to plants and earthworms, and microbial N‐transformation and bioaccumulation of Pb in earthworms increase with decreasing effective cation exchange capacity (eCEC) of the soil, and models were derived to normalize data for variation of the eCEC among soils. Suggested ecological quality standards for soil expressed as total soil Pb concentration are lower for Pb toxicity to wildlife via secondary poisoning compared with direct Pb toxicity to soil organisms. Standards for both types of receptors vary by factors of approximately 4 depending on soil eCEC. Chloride uptake by tropical forage grasses in two soils of Puerto Rico.

An experiment was conducted on two dairy farms in Puerto Rico (Gurabo and Cidra) from September 1998 to July 1999 with the objective of quantifying chloride (Cl-) concentrations and uptake in grazed forage, Aif plots were fertilized with the equivalent amount of 330,110, and 220 kg/ha/yr (N, P205, K20) and the treatments consisted of four Cl- levels (0, 82,164, and 328 kg/ha/yr) split in four applications. Forage was harvested every 28 days during the seven-month experiment. Plant Cl- concentrations were determined by means of a potentiometric titration in the laboratory. Yields (fresh and dry weight) were not significantly affected by Cl- levels, which suggests that background soil concentrations were sufficiently high so as not to limit plant growth. Mean monthly Cl- concentrations in forage tissue were significantly affected by Cl- levels, increasing from 0.79 to 0.82% in Cidra and from 0.68 to 0.96% in Gurabo. Cumulative Cl- uptake by forage in the sevenmonth study period for the highest Cl- treatment was 124 and 161 kg/ha in Cidra and Gurabo, respectively. Our data suggest that excess Cl- in milk does not necessarily originate from Cl-containing fertilizer. Estimated CI consumption by dairy cows consuming tropical forages and concentrate is higher than that suggested by the U.S. National Research Council.

Effects of riparian land use changes on soil attributes and concentrations of potentially toxic elements.

Riparian zones are intrinsically sensitive habitats to anthropogenic disturbances. Knowledge about how riparian soil attributes respond to anthropogenic changes remains limited. This information would allow the prediction of degradation and contamination soil scenarios that threaten water quality for supply. Here, we studied the impact on soil quality and concentration that potentially toxic elements caused through changes in land use in riparian soils in northeastern Brazil. A total of thirty riparian soil composite samples were collected from areas with different land use and evaluated for physical and chemical attributes, in addition to potentially toxic elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn). The results showed that replacing the natural vegetation in the riparian zone led to degradation gradient: pasture < agricultural < urban < industrial use. Soil attributes were sensitive in distinguishing the degree of degradation of each land use. Concentrations of the potentially toxic elements Cd and Zn are above the background soil concentrations and may pose a risk to the environment and human health. Our data can be helpful to understand better the complex relationship between land use and environmental impacts in riparian zones in northeastern Brazil and similar settings worldwide.

Assessment of reactive oxygen species production and genotoxicity of rare earth mining dust: Implications for public health and mining management

Mining rare earth elements (REEs) can release large amounts of metal(loid)-rich dust, which can pose significant health risks to local residents. However, compared to other types of particulates, toxicity of mining dust has been largely overlooked. To provide experimental evidence on toxicity of REE mine dust, the study assessed the oxidative stress potential and genotoxicity of inhalable particles collected in a REE mining area, and associated toxicological response with source compositions. Both source types (i.e., mine and tailing area) and distances from source (i.e., industrial and residential areas) were considered when selecting the 44 sampling sites. The particle samples contained 2.3–3.5 folds higher concentrations of tested metal(loid)s than background concentrations in soil. Specially, elevated Fe, REEs, Cd, Pb were found. In spite of low cytotoxicity in lung epithelial A549 cells, there was increased cellular ROS production by of particle exposure. Samples with higher mining-originated source contributions (Provenance Index <0.3) had higher cellular ROS production (1.72 fold, 95%CI: 1.66–1.79 fold) than samples with lower mining contributions (1.58 fold, 95%CI: 1.52–1.65 fold). The factors soil (~46%), mine (~22%), and heavy metal (~20%) sources were recognized by source apportionment analysis as the main contributors to cellular ROS production; importantly, mine and heavy metal sources counted more in industrial samples. While samples generated genotoxicity, there were no differences in DNA damage between the location groups of sampling. Collectively, the results indicate that particles in mining areas may cause ROS production and DNA damage in lung cells depending on mine dust. Coupled with the long-range transportation potential of mine dust, safety measures on open pit and dust disposal sites should be adopted.

Chromium, manganese, nickel, and cobalt mobility and bioavailability from mafic-to-ultramafic mine spoil weathering in western Massachusetts, USA.

Fragmented ultramafic bodies in New England were important mineral resources until the early twentieth century, yet few studies have addressed their potential to release trace metals to terrestrial and aquatic environments. Here, we evaluate the release of four trace metals (Cr, Co, Mn, and Ni) from a historic serpentine-talc "soapstone" quarry in Blandford, MA, USA. Soil pits, sediment and rock samples, and stream water samples were collected from upslope undisturbed areas, within the mine spoils and mine face, and downslope of the mine. In order to provide a bottom-up approach for understanding metal release, careful petrographic analysis, electron-dispersive spectroscopy, and wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy were employed to provide first-order insight into the mineralogy of the deposit and a determination of potential metal-bearing phases. Trace metals were primarily observed in ultramafic sheet silicates, primary Fe-oxides, and interstitial weathering-related sulfates. Bulk rock concentrations were Cr (1550mgkg-1), Co (230mgkg-1), Mn (1100mgkg-1), and Ni (1960mg kg1); Cr, Co, and Ni were elevated relative to the surrounding country rock. However, soils and sediments total concentrations were comparable to background soil concentrations: Cr (119mgkg-1), Co (73mgkg-1), Mn (894mgkg-1), and Ni (65mgkg-1). Moreover, < 0.5% of the total concentrations were bioavailable (0.1M ammonium acetate extraction), implying that metals are present as insoluble forms. However, ~ 20% of the total Cr, Mn, Ni, and Co concentrations were strong acid extractable, suggesting mobilization over the coming decades. Stream water concentrations of Mn and Cr were < 50µg L-1, below concentrations outlined by USEPA drinking water standards, and WHO water guidelines for Ni. These results suggest that transport of Cr, Mn, Ni, and Co from the serpentine-talc as dissolved compounds or sediments is limited by retention within silicate and oxides.

Sources evaluation, ecological and health risk assessment of potential toxic metals (PTMs) in surface soils of an industrial area, India.

The present study aims to appraise the spatial distribution of potential toxic metals by using geostatistical technique and find their associated ecological and human health risks from surface soils of Durgapur industrial area, India. The results show that the mean metal concentrations are 116.03, 32.96, 154.37, 321.20, 50.08, 29.54 and 2.97mg/kg for Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, Cu, Ni and Hg, respectively, and majority of them is found higher than their background and world natural soil concentrations. The GIS contour map of pollution load index values clearly distinguished the studied sampling area is highly to very highly polluted by the toxic metals. Contamination factor (Cf) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) values of studied metals show a similar sequence of Hg > Cd > Pb > Fe > Cr > Ni > Cu. Calculated enrichment factor (EF) value for Hg (13.29), Cd (5.26) and Pb (1.11) in studied soils was found significantly higher, which suggests that their primary sources are higher industrial activities in the studied area. Computation of potential ecological risk index reveals that the entire study area is under high risk level (1941.60-3367.23), in which Cd (588.52) and Hg (1979.26) possess the maximum ecological risk factor in all the sampling sites. The results of correlation analysis, principle component analysis and cluster analysis explore that industrial discharges, atmospheric disposition and waste disposal are the major sources of soil metal pollution in the studied region. Human health hazard indices are lower than 1 for all metals, indicating low non-carcinogenic risks to children and adults. Carcinogenic risk assessment reveals the existence of cancer risk of Cd (5.5E-03), Cr (8.6E-04) and Ni (3.0E-04) to child and Cd (8.2E-04) and Cr (1.3E-04) to adults in Durgapur.

Source Appointment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils of the Jiulong River Basin Based on Positive Matrix Factorization

In order to study the source appointment of heavy metals in agricultural soils of the Jiulong River Basin, Fujian Province, China. 71 agricultural soil samples were collected in July 2017. The concentrations of heavy metals in agricultural soils were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). Here, we use a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model for the source appointment of heavy metals in the sampled soils. The results showed that most of the heavy metal concentrations in the sampled agricultural soils were higher than soil background concentrations for the Fujian Province. The concentrations of Cd, Zn, Pb, and Cu in some soil samples were greater than the screening value of the Chinese soil pollution risk levels for agricultural land (GB 15618-2018). The spatial distributions of heavy metals showed a moderate variation across three regions of the study area (i.e., the North River watershed, West River watershed, and the estuary area). The highest concentration of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd were found in Longyan City (North River watershed), the highest concentrations of Pb were found in the West River watershed, and the highest concentrations of Co, Hg, and As were found in the estuary area. The non-negative properties of the source component spectrum and source contribution rate (obtained by the PMF model), as well as the significant correlation between the measured and PMF predicted concentrations, indicated that the results of the PMF model were relatively reasonable and can meet research needs. The source apportionment results of the PMF model showed that natural sources, agricultural sources, coal combustion, and industrial sources were the four major potential sources for heavy metals in the sampled agricultural soils, contributing 37.0%, 26.7%, 17.6%, and 18.7%, respectively.

Revisiting the Avian Eco-SSL for Lead: Recommendations for Revision.

The avian ecological soil screening level (Eco-SSL) for Pb (11 mg/kg) is within soil background concentrations for >90% of the United States. Consequently, its utility as a soil screening level is limited. Site-specific ecological risk-based remedial goals for Pb are frequently many times greater. Toxicity reference values (TRVs) play a major role in defining Eco-SSLs. The Pb Eco-SSL TRV is driven by reduced egg production in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), which displays effects at doses both substantially lower and greater than other tested species. High variability in egg production in Japanese quail has also been observed for other contaminants. Japanese quail egg production may therefore be too variable and unreliable an effect endpoint upon which to base regulatory screening criteria. Toxicity data supporting the Eco-SSL were reevaluated and only studies reporting both no and lowest observed adverse effect levels (NOAELs and LOAELs) for reproduction, growth, or survival were considered. Dose-response data were extracted from 10 studies both as concentrations and doses. Dose-response relationships were developed using the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Benchmark Dose Software for dietary concentrations and doses for egg production in Japanese quail and chickens. Effect levels (of 10%, 20%, and 50%) were extracted from the dose-response analyses. Species sensitivity distributions and dose-response data indicated reproduction was most sensitive to Pb and survival was least sensitive, with growth intermediate. Limited data for ringed turtle doves (Streptopelia risoria) and American kestrels (Falco sparverius) suggest lower sensitivity than chickens to Pb. The ED10 and ED20 thresholds for chickens were 4.4 and 9.8 mg·kg-1 ·d-1 , respectively. Avian Pb Eco-SSLs were recalculated based on the chicken ED10 and ED20, with and without a bioavailability adjustment. Revised avian Pb Eco-SSLs for the most highly exposed species (American woodcock), based on the ED10 and assuming 100% and 50% bioavailability, were 36.3 mg/kg and 43.7 mg/kg, respectively. Source and background threshold values of potentially toxic elements in soils by multivariate statistics and GIS-based mapping: a high density sampling survey in the Parauapebas basin, Brazilian Amazon.

A high-density regional-scale soil geochemical survey comprising 727 samples (one sample per each 5 × 5km grid) was carried out in the Parauapebas sub-basin of the Brazilian Amazonia, under the Itacaiúnas Basin Geochemical Mapping and Background Project. Samples were taken from two depths at each site: surface soil, 0-20cm and deep soil, 30-50cm. The ground and sieved (< 75µm) fraction was digested using aqua regia and analyzed for 51 elements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). All data were used here, but the principal focus was on the potential toxic elements (PTEs) and Fe and Mn to evaluate the spatial distribution patterns and to establish their geochemical background concentrations in soils. Geochemical maps as well as principal component analysis (PCA) show that the distribution patterns of the elements are very similar between surface and deep soils. The PCA, applied on clr-transformed data, identified four major associations: Fe-Ti-V-Sc-Cu-Cr-Ni (Gp-1); Zr-Hf-U-Nb-Th-Al-P-Mo-Ga (Gp-2); K-Na-Ca-Mg-Ba-Rb-Sr (Gp-3); and La-Ce-Co-Mn-Y-Zn-Cd (Gp-4). Moreover, the distribution patterns of elements varied significantly among the three major geological domains. The whole data indicate a strong imprint of local geological setting in the geochemical associations and point to a dominant geogenic origin for the analyzed elements. Copper and Fe in Gp-1 were enriched in the Carajás basin and are associated with metavolcanic rocks and banded-iron formations, respectively. However, the spatial distribution of Cu is also highly influenced by two hydrothermal mineralized copper belts. Ni-Cr in Gp-1 are highly correlated and spatially associated with mafic and ultramafic units. The Gp-2 is partially composed of high field strength elements (Zr, Hf, Nb, U, Th) that could be linked to occurrences of A-type Neoarchean granites. The Gp-3 elements are mobile elements which are commonly found in feldspars and other rock-forming minerals being liberated by chemical weathering. The background threshold values (BTV) were estimated separately for surface and deep soils using different methods. The '75th percentile', which commonly used for the estimation of the quality reference values (QRVs) following the Brazilian regulation, gave more restrictive or conservative (low) BTVs, while the 'MMAD' was more realistic to define high BTVs that can better represent the so-called mineralized/normal background. Compared with CONAMA Resolution (No. 420/2009), the conservative BTVs of most of the toxic elements were below the prevention limits (PV), except Cu, but when the high BTVs are considered, Cu, Co, Cr and Ni exceeded the PV limits. The degree of contamination (Cdeg), based on the conservative BTVs, indicates low contamination, except in the Carajás basin, which shows many anomalies and had high contamination mainly from Cu, Cr and Ni, but this is similar between surface and deep soils indicating that the observed high anomalies are strictly related to geogenic control. This is supported when the Cdeg is calculated using the high BTVs, which indicates low contamination. This suggests that the use of only conservative BTVs for the entire region might overestimate the significance of anthropogenic contamination; thus, we suggest the use of high BTVs for effective assessment of soil contamination in this region. The methodology and results of this study may help developing strategies for geochemical mapping in other Carajás soils or in other Amazonian soils with similar characteristics.
