Radiation and Radiation Protection Awareness among Medical Imaging Program Students

With the technological developments in the field of health, the use of radiation in medicine is increasing day by day. The radiation awareness of healthcare personnel working in radiation is also very important in terms of both their own protection and the protection of patients from radiation. The aim of this study is to reveal the level of knowledge about radiation and radiation protection of students from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Vocational School of Health Services, which provides Medical Imaging and Radiology education in Çanakkale province, who are doing practice/internship/skill training in diagnostic radiology units of hospitals and whether this awareness differs according to various individual and demographic characteristics. For this purpose, a questionnaire including both demographic characteristics and the scale was applied to 189 university students to obtain the data set. For the statement "I have knowledge about X-rays", 3.2% of the 1st grade students strongly disagreed, 8.4% were undecided, 69.5% agreed, 4.2% disagreed and 14.7% strongly agreed, while 1.1% of the 2nd grade students strongly disagreed, 2.1% were undecided, 75.5% agreed and 20.1% strongly agreed (p=0.04). In general, no difference was found between the 1st and 2nd grades when the level of knowledge about radiation and radiation protection was evaluated. In order to reinforce the topics related to radiation, it would be useful to repeat the topics frequently in the courses and to prepare current presentations by experts in the field and to present them as seminars within the scope of in-service training for both students and Radiology Technicians professionally.

A study on awareness, knowledge, and practice of radiation exposure protection protocols by dentists in a Nigerian teaching hospital

Objectives: The role of dental radiography cannot be over-emphasized but the harmful effect of its radiation cannot be overlooked, thereby making the knowledge and practice of exposure protection very important. While studies on awareness, knowledge, and practice exposure protection are available in other countries, it appears that there is a dearth of such studies in our environment. The aim of this survey was to assess the awareness, knowledge, and practice of radiation hazards and exposure protection techniques of dentists in a Nigerian teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study design was conducted between December 2022 and February 2023 at the dental complex of a Nigerian teaching hospital among dental practitioners. The data were collected with a 23-item, structured, close-ended, and self-administered questionnaire. The data collected were age, gender, department of respondents, medical status, years of experience, and additional degree. Other collected data were awareness, knowledge, and practice of radiation protection. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. The data were entered and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 26 (IBM, Armonk, NY, United States of America). A critical probability level (P < 0.05) was used as the cutoff level for statistical significance. Results: A total of 100 questionnaires were distributed, and 82 were retrieved, giving a response rate of 82%. The mean age of the respondents was 45.3 ± 5.1 years. There were more males (58.5%) with a male-to-female ratio of 1.4:1. The prevalence of poor awareness and inadequate knowledge of radiation exposure protection was 48.2% and 22.4%, respectively. The prevalence of poor practice toward radiation exposure was 66.7%. Only years of experience and additional degree influenced the prevalence of inadequate knowledge of radiation exposure (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of poor awareness, inadequate knowledge, and poor practice of radiation exposure protection, with values of 48.2%, 22.4%, and 66.7%, respectively, were quite high. The prevalence of inadequate knowledge of radiation exposure protection was influenced by years of practice and additional degrees.

Implementation of Deviation Index to Optimization Procedures on Radiography Examination Using Digital Radiography

In the development of radiographic imaging technology at digital radiography (DR) is not accompanied by an increase in radiographers' awareness and knowledge of optimization procedures. The aim of this research will focus on the implementation of the deviation index to optimize procedures using digital radiography. The research method is descriptive and analytical by giving questionnaires to radiographers regarding awareness and knowledge of optimization procedures in radiographic examinations using deviation index (DI) on digital radiography (DR), This research was conducted on radiographer respondents with the research time being conducted between August - October 2023. Statistical analysis using SPSS 27 with prior data coding. After that, the measurement of the percentage of awareness and knowledge about optimization procedures using DI on DR will be categorized as <60%: bad, 60-75%: moderate, and>75: good. Then for the value determination p-value using test chi-squere to determine the correlation between knowledge of region, age, gender, education, and experience in optimization procedures using DI in DR. The study's findings regarding the use of optimization procedure demonstrate that radiographers' awareness and knowledge in applying DI on DR optimization methods is still lacking, with a percentage value of less than 60%. The results of the test chi-square demonstrate that there is no correlation between respondent data characteristics and knowledge p-value > 0.05. Therefore, attending radiation protection training and course is a crucial step toward raising radiographers awareness and knowledge of radiation protection on patient. because the radiology department's quality assurance and service quality measures are linked to initiatives to optimize procedures.

Is cross-sectional imaging necessary for fractures of the distal lower leg in children and adolescents: results of a nationwide survey.

In childhood and adolescence, cross-sectional imaging, most commonly computed tomography (CT), is often performed for advanced diagnosis of joint injuries of the distal lower leg and upper ankle. Due to radiation exposure, the need for CT remains controversial, as these injuries follow stereotypies and usually have a similar course. Alternatively, the performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is also discussed. Since radiation sensitivity at this young age is much higher than in adults, an effort must be to minimize radiation exposure according to as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principles. The aim of this survey is to evaluate the current procedure in Germany in the diagnosis of pediatric injuries of the distal lower leg and upper ankle. For data collection, a survey entitled "CT in fractures of the ankle joint in childhood and adolescence: subject of the survey are injuries between 8 and 15years of age" of the Section of Pediatric Traumatology in the German Association of Trauma Surgery was sent to all members via the distribution list of the German Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology and the distribution list of the German Society of Pediatric Surgery in a period from September 20, 2022-December 21, 2022. The survey included a total of 21 questions. Target groups were trauma and pediatric surgeons and orthopedic surgeons working in the hospital and in practice. A total of 525 participants took part in the survey: ultrasound diagnostics are used by almost 25% and the Ottawa Ankle Rules by over 50% always or in most cases. A conventional x-ray is always or most often used by over 90%. CT imaging is rarely used by 88.57%, mainly for surgical planning or analysis of fracture progression. 69.9% report that their radiology department uses a pediatric protocol for CT exams; 25.71% do not know if this is the case. MRI imaging is also used infrequently by 89.33%, mostly to identify associated injuries. Overall, CT imaging is chosen by 55.62% and MRI imaging by 35.24% as the sectional imaging modality for suspected fractures; 95.05% consider sectional imaging useful for a triplane fracture, 59.24% for a two-plane fracture, 41.71% for a Salter-Harris type III/IV injury, and 8% for a Salter-Harris type I/II injury. The survey showed that the conventional X-ray is still the gold standard. Interestingly, more than half of the respondents regularly use the Ottawa Ankle Rules, and diagnostics using ultrasound are also used by almost a quarter. Awareness of radiation protection in children exists, although a quarter of all participants do not know the extent to which their radiology department has a specific pediatric protocol for CT imaging. Cross-sectional imaging is performed on a regular basis. Regarding the actual extent of imaging, there is a clear divergence between theory and practice.

Medical Imaging Student's Assessment on Radiation Protection in Clinical Training

This study evaluates pre- and post-clinical training radiation protection awareness and knowledge among medical imaging students. A cross-sectional study of 120 medical imaging students from Malaysian public universities was undertaken. The survey is based on the developed Healthcare Professional Knowledge of Radiation Protection (HPKRP) scale. There was a significant difference between the pre and post-clinical training students in their awareness of radiation protection but no difference in other radiological knowledge. Therefore, clinical training remained a fundamental component of medical imaging education for students to gain the skills and understanding of appropriate radiation protection procedures.

Assessment of radiographers' understanding of radiation safety and their occupational radiation exposure in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia

BackgroundMedical radiation workers account for 75% of the workers exposed to ionizing radiation worldwide. All registered radiation workers' occupational exposure is monitored regularly to keep track of their doses. It is critical to track personnel's radiation exposure and assess the characteristics that affect the total radiation burden. ObjectiveThe study aims to assess radiographers' knowledge of radiation safety and their occupational exposure in the Southern Province of Saudi Arabia. Materials and methodsMany random hospitals in the Asir region (Hospitals 1, 2, and 3), south of Saudi Arabia, were selected. The project's analysis of the TLD readings for 200 radiography staff members was the first step. After that, radiology departments were surveyed about radiation exposure, and an electronic questionnaire was created to gauge radiographers' awareness and understanding. The responses were then examined. ResultsMore than half of the technicians whose average dose limit is more significant than one mSv, 20% are higher than 1.5 mSv. The CT rooms of Hospital 1 have a much higher effective dose than the rest of the hospitals' CT rooms. Most radiographers do not wear radiation gowns during imaging when required. More than half of them reported that some protective tools are not available. The technicians demonstrated sound knowledge in answering questions about understanding and awareness of radiation protection. ConclusionThe results are alert to a weakness in the radiation protection system within hospitals. This is reflected in the great dissatisfaction of technicians with the radiation protection units in their hospitals. Awareness answers and good knowledge do not correspond to reality.

MONTE CARLO NEUTRON DOSE MEASUREMENT IN PROTON THERAPY FOR HEALTHCARE WORKER RADIATION SAFETY

Background: Proton therapy is an innovative and highly advanced external radiation therapy modality for cancer treatment that uses positively charged atomic particles. The usage of proton therapy facilities in Asia has been increasing and will be followed by Indonesia in the short-coming years. In line with its significant benefits, the application of proton therapy also requires radiation protection awareness due to its higher energy used by protons produces scattered photon and neutron radiation in proton interactions. Therefore, optimal verification is needed in the commissioning process for designing proton therapy shielding bunkers. Objective: This research aims to examine the effect of concrete density on proton shielding by calculating the equivalent dose H*(10) of neutrons in the treatment control room (TCR) and the door of the compact proton therapy facility (CPTC) using Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) simulation software. Method: The proton facility modeled for this simulation uses a compact proton therapy type planned to be built at one of the radiotherapy facilities in Indonesia. The proton therapy bunker model consists of a synchrocyclotron accelerator room and an examination room with standard configurations, wall thicknesses, and modeling areas under compact proton therapy standards. The analysis is focused on assessing the suitability of concrete materials and wall thicknesses and determining the neutron exposure dose values in the TCR and CPTC doors. The geometry, radiation source, and type of concrete in the wall are simulated from a conservative assumption to a more realistic model. Result: At the designated points in the TCR and CPTC door, measurements are taken from the simulation, which indicates that the equivalent dose H*(10) value is below one mSv/year. Conclusion: This value indicates that the dose rate passing through the wall does not exceed the dose limit value already set at one mSv/year for the general public.

Investigation of the Radiographer's adherence and compliance with radiation protection and infection control practices during COVID-19 mobile radiography

Radiological staff, especially radiographers, work as front liners against the COVID-19 outbreak. This study aims to assess compliance with radiation protection and infection control practices during COVID-19 mobile radiography procedures. This cross-sectional study included 234 radiographers (females, 56%, n = 131; males, 44%, n = 103) who were asked to complete an online questionnaire consisting of demographic data, radiation protection and infection control practices during COVID-19 portable cases, and knowledge and awareness. After informed consent was completed, SPSS statistical software was used for the data analysis. The most common age group of participants ranged from 18 to 25 years old (30.3%, n = 71). Bachelor's degree holders were 74.4% (n = 174). Most radiographers (39.7%, n = 93) had a working experience of 1–5 years, followed by 27.8% (n = 65) with more than 16 years of experience. Most respondents (62.4%, n = 146) handled approximately 1–5 cases daily, the majority of them (56%, n = 131) stated affirmatively they had obtained special training to handle COVID-19, and when inquired if they had received any special allowances for handling COVID-19 suspected/confirmed cases most of them stated negative (73.9%, n = 173). Most participants stated that they always wear a TLD during portable cases (67.1%, n = 157) and a lead apron (51.7%, n = 121). Around 73% (n = 171) knew the latest information on COVID-19 and attended the COVID-19 awareness course. A significant association was found between the work experience of the radiographers and their responses to following the best practices (p = 0.018, α = 0.05). Radiographers who had COVID-19 training (μ = 48.78) tend to adhere more to best practices than those who have not (p = 0.04, α = 0.05). Further, respondents who handled more than 16/more COVID-19 suspected/confirmed cases followed the best practices more (μ = 50.38) than those who handled less (p = 0.04, α = 0.05). This study revealed detailed information on radiation protection and infection control practices during COVID-19 mobile radiography. It has been observed that the participants/radiographers have good knowledge and awareness of radiation protection and infection-control practices. The present results may be used to plan future requirements regarding resources and training to ensure patient safety.

Radiation Protection Knowledge and Awareness of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials among Underground Goldmine Workers in Ghana

The level of knowledge and awareness of naturally occurring radioactive materials and indoor radon among underground goldmine workers were measured using a well-structured closed ended five-point likert scale questionnaire using a one sample T test for the analysis. There was a significant relationship between the awareness and knowledge of NORM and radon gas among the underground workers apart from the awareness and knowledge of the increased risk of cancer due to exposure of radon for workers who smoke. The level of awareness and knowledge is positively correlated with the level of education of respondents and negatively correlated to the years of service and age of respondents, but the ANOVA table indicates a statistical significance between the demographic data and the awareness and knowledge of radon gas and NORM in their working environment with an adjusted R 2 of 46.1%. Evaluation of Awareness of Radiation Protection Among Medical Professionals in Faridpur, Bangladesh

Fact-finding survey on the competencies and literacy of radiological technologists regarding radiation disasters.

Radiological technologists serve as risk communicators who aim to lessen patients' anxiety about radiation exposure, in addition to performing radiological examinations. We conducted a fact-finding survey on knowledge and awareness of radiation disasters among the radiological technologists to reveal their literacy and competencies regarding radiation disasters. A paper questionnaire was distributed to 1,835 radiological technologists at 166 National Hospital Organization facilities in Japan. The 28-item questionnaire covered knowledge and awareness of radiation protection and radiation disasters. Radiological technologists were divided into 2 groups by regionality: areas where a nuclear power station was present/nearby (NPS areas) and non-NPS areas. Completed questionnaires were returned from 148 facilities with a facility response rate of 89.2% and from 1,391 radiological technologists with a response rate of 75.8%. There were 1,290 valid responses with a valid response rate of 70.3%. The correct answer rate for knowledge of radiation protection and radiation disasters was high in the 24 NPS areas. There were no differences in awareness of radiation disasters between NPS and non-NPS areas. Establishing a nationwide, region-independent training system can be expected to improve literacy regarding radiation disasters among radiological technologists. Willingness to assist during disasters was high among radiological technologists irrespective of area, indicating that the competencies of radiological technologists represent a competency model for radiation disaster assistance.

A Questionnaire Survey on Radiation Protection among Medical Staff Working in Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

Background and aims: It is essential for cardiologists, technologists, and nurses working in the cardiac catheterization laboratory to understand radiation protection. However, protective equipment usage is still low, wearing dosimeters is also low and there is little awareness of radiation protection in practice.

Artificial intelligence-based fuzzy logic systems for predicting radiation protection awareness levels among university population

The present study aims to assess the knowledge level of radiation protection among individuals of Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) using artificial intelligence baesd fuzzy logic system. This cross-sectional study included 428 PNU participants. They were asked to fill in the online questionnaire, consisting of demographic data, education level, and radiation protection awareness. After informed consent was completed, a statistical package for the social sciences as well as fuzzy logic system was used for data analysis. The participant group consisted of 98.4% females, 96.3% individuals aged 18–28 years (the most common age group), 63.1% bachelor's degree holders, and 65.7% medical participants. Specialty and radiation protection awareness exhibited significant association (P < 0.05). However, age, education level, and gender did not show a significant association (P > 0.05). PNU individuals in the medical field differed significantly (P > 0.05) with the non-medical individual in their knowledge of radiation protection. This study suggests that PNU individuals in the medical field have a reasonable awareness of radiation protection. However, the general knowledge of non-medical individuals must be improved to raise awareness. Based on the obtained results by using fuzzy model, this study suggests that the tool can be used in the process of radiation protection awareness in other institutions and areas.

Assessment of the awareness of radiation protection and related concepts among nursing staff mainly working in diagnostic imaging units, cath-labs and operation theatres in Sri Lanka: A survey-based study

IntroductionThis study was carried out to evaluate the awareness of radiation protection, radiation types, medical imaging equipment and radiation effects among nurses for the first time in Sri Lanka. Since nurses are involved as direct caregivers in diagnostic and therapeutic radiography and radiation treatment procedures, they need to have a good understanding of the areas mentioned above. MethodsA self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 391 nurses working in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings. Forwarded questions gathered the participants' demographic details and assessed their awareness of radiation protection, medical imaging equipment, radiation type and radiation effects. The average score per awareness area for each demographic characteristic was calculated based on the responses. Additionally, the percentage of participants who scored above 50 and 75 was calculated for each awareness area. ResultsThe majority were female participants (81.1%) and possessed a diploma in nursing (66.0%) with 10.8 years of average work experience. 92.3%, 74.7%, 69.8% and 22.3% of the participants scored more than 50 marks for the questions related to radiation protection, medical imaging equipment, radiation type and radiation effects, respectively. The level of nursing education and prior training in radiation protection significantly influenced all awareness areas, whereas participants with a graduate qualification in nursing and with prior radiation protection training scored the highest average marks. ConclusionBased on the scores obtained, the Sri Lankan nurses have satisfactory awareness of the essential concepts related to radiation types, medical imaging equipment and radiation protection. However, there is a significant lacking of awareness of radiation effects. This can be attributed to the fact that most participants did not have any formal training in radiation protection. The results implicate that proper training in radiation protection can significantly influence awareness of radiation protection and related concepts. Therefore, it is a timely requirement to initiate short awareness programs and continuing education programs on radiation protection for nurses working in specialised radiation units. Implications for practiceThe study suggests the necessity of initiating continuous education programs for nursing staff radiation protection to overcome the awareness gaps.

Radiation Protection among South African Diagnostic Radiographers-A Mixed Method Study.

Worldwide, radiographers' radiation protection practices vary. In South Africa, evidence of diagnostic radiographers' suboptimal radiation protection practices has been reported, but the reasons for these practices and suggestions to improve practices were lacking. Therefore, this study explored radiation protection among South African diagnostic radiographers. This study used an explanatory, sequential, mixed-method approach. Data were collected in three phases. Phase I, the quantitative phase, used an online questionnaire and respondents from Phase I interested in participating in Phase II, the qualitative phase, were interviewed, yielding 13 in-depth semi-structured telephone interviews. In Phase III, eight radiography managers co-constructed change strategies to optimize radiation protection in South Africa in two focus group interviews. Radiation protection was suboptimal despite diagnostic radiographers having a good attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control toward radiation protection and optimal radiation protection knowledge. Varying attitudes to radiation protection, lack of resources, and support from radiography management and healthcare teams contributed to suboptimal radiation protection practices. Radiography managers suggested increasing radiation protection awareness, ameliorating the diminished stature of the radiographer in the healthcare team, and increasing the availability of optimal quality resources. South African diagnostic radiographers' radiation protection knowledge was optimal, but the implementation of radiation protection varied and was influenced by multiple factors. A radiation protection culture supported by management is advocated to optimize radiation protection. However, ultimately radiation protection practices are incumbent on the individual radiographers' choice to practice radiation protection.

Awareness of Radiation Protection and Common Radiation Dose Levels Among Healthcare Workers.

Access to ionizing radiation has become widely available for diagnosis and treatment. The increased use of ionizing radiation has been associated with radiation exposure hazards for patients and radiation workers. Raising the level of radiation protection awareness is important to maintain the safety of healthcare settings. Online questionnaires were distributed to 755 healthcare workers and students at King Abdulaziz Medical City and King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire consisted of 14 multiple-choice questions divided into two sections (questions related to radiation protection and common radiologic examination doses). In total, 443 participants completed the questionnaire, including 142 (32%) medical students, 107 (24%) radiology technologists, 105 (24%) radiography students, and 89 (20%) physicians. Of the participants, 245 (55%) were men. A total of 74 (84%) physicians and 51 (47%) radiology technologists had more than 5 years of experience. Eleven (12%) physicians and 44 (41%) radiology technologists had 1-4 years of experience, whereas the rest had less than 1 year of experience. Only 16% of participants attended training courses on a regular basis. However, 15% of the participants thought that they had excellent knowledge of radiation protection, whereas 18% admitted that they did not have sufficient knowledge. Sixty-two percent of the questions related to radiation protection awareness were answered correctly. Forty-five percent of the participants correctly answered questions related to doses from common radiologic examinations. Only 23% and 16% of participants were aware of the noncontrast chest CT and lumbar x-ray doses, respectively. Moreover, 35% and 24% of participants did not know that pelvic MRI and abdominal ultrasound do not contribute any radiation dose, respectively. The results showed a knowledge gap regarding radiation protection and dose levels; therefore, periodic refresher courses are recommended for healthcare workers in order to increase the level of awareness.

Assessment of Knowledge about Nuclear Radiation, and Awareness of Radiation Protection among Medical Students in Riyadh Universities, Saudi Arabia

Background and Aims: Nuclear medicine is considered one of the main medical specialties exposing practitioners to high radiation doses. Therefore, the assessment of knowledge about protection measures is imperative to ensure the safety. The aim of the study is to assess knowledge among medical students about nuclear radiation at Riyadh universities, Saudi Arabia. Methods: We conducted cross-sectional as an online survey which assesses knowledge about nuclear radiation safety and radiation protection awareness. We distributed it to medical students in Riyadh’s governmental universities. Results: A total of 584 responses were collected. The participants represented four universities in Riyadh, and 64.9% of them were in clinical years. The study found that 16.1% had adequate knowledge and awareness toward nuclear radiation. Moreover, 44.7% had moderate knowledge while 39.2% had inadequate knowledge. Limitations include the lack of knowledge about personal monitoring devices (81.5%), how to use them (70.7%) and dose limits (51.5%). Furthermore, 74.1% of interns showed adequate awareness, when compared to clinical and preclinical students, who had figures of 16.3% and 8.1% respectively. 70.8% preferred obtaining information from medical websites, while 44.7% opted E-learning. Moreover, it emerged that King Saud University students had the highest level of awareness while Imam Mohammed bin Saud University students showed the lowest. Conclusions: The study revealed that the level of awareness among medical students about nuclear radiation protection is low. This stems from the lack of knowledge about personal monitoring devices with regards to safety and how best to use them.

The global incidence of melanoma has risen rapidly over the last decades in Caucasian populations with Switzerland reporting among the highest rates in Europe. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the main risk factors for melanoma. Our aim was to investigate the UV protection behavior and melanoma awareness in a high-risk cohort for melanoma. In this prospective monocentric study comparing 2D- and 3D-imaging with deep-learning based risk assessments and routine skin cancer screenings by dermatologists for early detection of melanoma, we assessed general melanoma awareness and UV protection habits in high-risk patients for melanoma (≥ 100 nevi, ≥ 5 dysplastic nevi, known CDKN2A mutation and/or positive family history) and melanoma patients by questionnaires.

Knowledge and practice of radiation protection in the operating theater among orthopedic surgeons.

Many orthopedic procedures, particularly minimally invasive surgeries that require fluoroscopic imaging, present a radiation exposure risk to the orthopedic surgeon. Surgeons may have a higher risk of developing cancer if they receive significant amounts of radiation. Using personal protective equipment (PPE) and appropriate imaging device positioning, plays an important role in reducing the surgeon's radiation exposure. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the surgeon's radiation safety awareness and practices. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the practices and radiation protection knowledge of orthopedic surgeons in the operating theater. A nationwide survey was conducted from October 2021 to January 2022 to evaluate the radiation protection practices and awareness of orthopedic surgeons in Jordan. Normalized practice and knowledge scores were evaluated through the survey and compared between different groups. Descriptive statistics were used to present the surgeon's practices and radiation protection knowledge. Student's -test was used to compare the outcomes between surgeons that received radiation protection training and surgeons who did not. Using ANOVA analysis, we compared the score outcomes for all the other variables. The surgeons that received radiation protection training had significantly higher practice score 39.6% compared with 31% for the group that did not have training ( ). No statistically significant difference in the knowledge scores was found between the two groups. Although 91% of the surgeons reported using some kind of PPE, only 5.5% used a dosimeter badge during surgeries. There is an obvious deficit in radiation safety training of orthopedic surgeons.
