Knowledge and awareness of ocular allergy among undergraduate students at a public university in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

ABSTRACT Background: Ocular allergy (OA) is one of the most common disorders worldwide, affecting millions of individuals of all ages. Public education about the disease is critical for lowering the prevalence of OAs. The present study aims to evaluate the knowledge and awareness level of OA among undergraduate students at Imam Mohammed Ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through a self-administered online questionnaire. A total of six multiple choice questions were used to assess awareness of OA with a maximum possible score of 6. In addition, nine checkboxes and multiple-choice questions were used to evaluate knowledge of ocular allergy with a maximum possible score of 21. Results: The study included 591 participants. The average awareness score was 3.1 ± 1.47 points. The average knowledge score was 9.41 ± 4.04 points. The average knowledge and awareness score was lower in males than in females. A higher age (>27 years) was associated with better knowledge of OA (B = 3.62, P = 0.008). The Internet was the most common source of information mentioned by the respondents (26.3%). Conclusion: Our study showed that Imam Mohammed Ibn Saud Islamic University undergraduate students had moderate knowledge and awareness of OA. Thus, additional effort is required to enhance the knowledge and awareness of OA.

Food Allergy Awareness Champions: Improving Food Safety Standards in Online Food Procurement for People With Food Hypersensitivities

Background There have been changes more recently in how people commonly acquire and consume food at home. The practice of ordering online food delivery including ready-to-eat meals, drinks, and snacks has increased immensely. The COVID-19 pandemic has likely been a factor in this change in practice as it’s now the case that one in four consumers thinks about using meal delivery services on a regular basis. The aims of this project were: • to improve understanding and knowledge of the behaviours of FHS citizen scientists buying ready-to-eat (takeaway and delivered) food online. • to learn more about the visible procedures and practices of individual food businesses offering online food delivery. • to use accredited methods to determine the presence of certain allergens in selected samples of food procured by participants. Results In general, respondents expressed more trust in nationwide food chains due to their perceived resources, updated information, menu consistency and/or accreditation by a UK allergy charity, such as Allergy UK or Coeliac UK. The citizen scientists revealed some of their behaviours to minimise the risk of contamination including: • eating food alone, before or after the family or work meal • physically separating gluten-containing from non-gluten-containing foods at the table • double checking the food order and the labels provided • following good food hygiene guidelines • using their own senses. Furthermore, there were some indications that older FHS citizens may perceive the risk of ordering online differently from younger age groups.

NURS-18. GERMINOMA PATIENTS – MORE PRONE TO PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS, ALLERGIES, AND WEIGHT PROBLEMS? AN INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW

Abstract BACKGROUND Germinoma are the most frequent type of intracranial germ cell tumour. Within nursing clinical practice an increased prevalence of psychiatric manifestations, allergies, and weight gain throughout treatment and into survivorship within the germinoma population has been observed. There is only limited literature about these problems available. METHODS A retrospective review of clinical presentation, psychiatric co-morbidity, therapeutic course, and follow-up of 27 Germinoma patients (6.2-17 years) diagnosed and treated at a tertiary care center from 2008-2021 was performed. In addition, the presence and occurrence of allergies and weight changes throughout their therapy was reviewed. RESULTS Nearly half of the Germinoma patients (n=11) (suprasellar, pineal, basal ganglia) were diagnosed with pre-existing psychiatric co-morbidity (anxiety, depression, mood disorder and eating disorder) as per DSM-5 criteria, more commonly verified after their brain tumour diagnosis and persistent beyond treatment. Three of 27 (11%) patients indicated allergies (medication, food) at diagnosis. Seventeen of the 27 (63%) patients presented with allergies throughout their therapy (medication, tape, cleaning products, blood products). Six (35%) of those patients developed anaphylactic reaction to Etoposide and/or blood products. Eight of the patients (suprasellar & pineal) were found to have a significant weight gain throughout their treatment and two (pineal & suprasellar) were found to have significant weight loss, the rest of the cohort remained stable. The impact of tumour location (suprasellar, pineal) on the specific problems is ongoing. CONCLUSION The findings of this retrospective review could guide clinical practice. The potential higher incidence of psychiatric disorders should prompt practitioners to upfront screening and throughout therapy to ensure adequate support. Allergy prevalence in pediatrics is variable but an allergy occurrence of 35% is elevated in comparison to the general population and therefore increased awareness of allergies within this population is important for the bedside nurse. Lastly, early involvement of dieticians to aid in weight management seems crucial.

Drug allergy awareness and perspectives with the implementation of the International Classification of Diseases-11.

To understand the current global scale of drug hypersensitivity (DH) and drug allergy (DA), and to identify possible strategies to increase the accuracy of epidemiological data. Global patterns of DH/DA seem to be changing and increasing worldwide, but there are still great challenges in capturing quality DH/DA mortality and morbidity statistics (MMS). DH/DA MMS may gain new perspectives with the global implementation of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-11. Improving the quality of epidemiological data related to DH/DA should clarify areas of uncertainty, which would lead to better strategies to reduce the burden of these conditions. DH/DA remains a complex and unaddressed problem globally that often deprives patients of optimal medication choices and places them at risk for life-threatening reactions. DH/DA labels should contribute to people well being, by protecting true allergic individuals from being re-exposed to their allergic drugs and providing needed medications to individuals wrongly labeled as allergic or who have lost allergic sensitivity. The true rate of DH/DA is in fact unknown due to a number of factors, such as misdiagnosis, miscoding and under- and over-notification, among others. Moreover, there is lack of data about DH/DA epidemiology in many countries. Difficulties on collecting accurate and comparable data should be acknowledged, with great impact in the correct labeling DH/DA in electronic health records and official statistics. More accurate definitions, classification and coding may contribute to a better-quality MMS thanks to the ICD-11, under implementation worldwide. Improving the quality of epidemiological data related to DH/DA should clarify areas of uncertainty, which would lead to better strategies to reduce the burden of these conditions. As knowledge derived from populations is key information for more realistic decision-making, the construction of the new section addressed to DH/DA in the ICD-11 will allow the collection of more accurate epidemiological data to support quality management of patients, and facilitate healthcare planning to implement public health measures to prevent and reduce the morbidity and mortality attributable to these conditions.

Addressing knowledge gaps in allergies among Syrian hospital patients: a cross-sectional study

Allergies have a significant impact on health and quality of life worldwide, yet there is limited research on the awareness and knowledge of allergies. This study aimed to explore the level of awareness and knowledge of allergies among visitors in Syrian hospitals. A cross-sectional study was conducted between May and September 2022, and a standardized international questionnaire was administered to 504 visitors in three hospitals in Syria. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) version 23. The final sample comprised 504 questionnaires with 61.7% of participants achieving an average score. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in knowledge of allergy scores between the group with only elementary education (M = 3.76, SD = 1.67, p = 0.011), the group with no education (M = 3.65, SD = 1.65, p = 0.006), and the group with a university education (M = 4.44, SD = 1.25). Notably, no significant differences were found between the other educational groups. A one-way ANOVA was employed to assess the effect of place of living on knowledge of allergy, but no significant differences were observed between the groups (p = 0.462). Lastly, a significant negative correlation was detected between participant age and knowledge of allergy scores (r(502) = − 0.102, p = 0.022). Allergies represent a substantial global health concern that demands attention from healthcare providers, policymakers, and the public. This study emphasizes the importance of investing in health education and awareness campaigns to enhance knowledge and comprehension of allergies, particularly individuals with lower levels of education levels. By equipping individuals with the requisite information to effectively manage their allergies, their overall health and wellbeing can be improved.

Community Perspectives Toward Food Allergies

Background: Food allergy is a widespread condition with multiple manifestations across the globe. The purpose of this study was to analyze the community's knowledge of techniques to improving food allergy awareness in Saudi Arabia. Methodology: This cross-sectional poll includes 15141 Saudi residents between December 2020 and January 2021. The data was gathered using convenience/snowball sampling via an online poll. The questionnaire was created using the verified design by Gupta et al. [12]. The survey was marketed on social media and by e-mail. Results: In this study, 15142 individuals had been surveyed. This population's average overall knowledge was 57.1%. Approximately 12% of participants claimed food allergies and had previously been diagnosed with an IgE test, with 11.7% males and 12% females. Contacting a person with FA calmed about 11% of people, including 8.4% of men and 11.6% of women. Conclusion: The Saudi population has a low level of overall understanding about FA allergy. FA proportions are higher among those aged 36 to 45. The knowledge level of FA does not appear to be affected by gender, financial situation, or education level. In this study, FA prevalence rates were lower in nations with lower rates.

Knowledge of atopic dermatitis and food allergies, as well as health information literacy, among North Korean refugee mothers: a descriptive survey study.

This study investigated knowledge of atopic dermatitis and food allergies, as well as health information literacy, among North Korean refugee mothers with preschool-age children and explored how these variables were related to participants' characteristics. A descriptive study design was used. Data from 130 North Korean refugee mothers were collected between January and March 2023. The mean scores were 14.48 of 30 for atopic dermatitis knowledge; 2.77 of 10 for food allergy knowledge, and 56.95 of 80 for health information literacy. Significant differences were observed in knowledge of atopic dermatitis based on breastfeeding duration (F=4.12, p=.009), and in knowledge of food allergies based on mixed feeding (F=3.11, p=.049). Health information literacy showed significant relationships with education level (F=3.76, p=.026), occupation (F=3.99, p=.021), checking nutritional information (t=2.91, p=.004), mixed feeding (F=4.50, p=.014), and atopic dermatitis diagnosis (t=6.86, p=.001). Significant positive correlations were observed between atopic dermatitis knowledge, food allergy knowledge, and health information literacy. Personalized educational programs should be implemented to improve awareness of allergies and health information literacy among North Korean refugee mothers, which would help them find, evaluate, and understand health-related information. These programs should focus on providing nutrition and dietary education to promote healthy growth in children and prevent diseases.

Development of a method for pectincontaining shortbread pastry (frozen semi-finished product) for functional shortbread biscuits with a low gluten content

The aim is to research and develop a recipe and technology for semi-finished shortbread pastry (frozen semi-finished product) for functional cookies with a low gluten content, with the possibility of long-term storage without loss of quality indicators.Products with a low gluten content play an important role in the diet of people with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, as well as those who strive for a healthier diet and variety in their menu. With the growing awareness of allergies and specific dietary needs, low gluten foods have become a significant nutritional trend that is driving the entire food industry forward and improving the quality of life for many consumers. Frozen semi-finished products are in demand, their significant growth is observed – about 18...20% annually. Shock freezing is possible at any stage of preparation of products: semi-finished products, dough, a product of a high degree of culinary readiness. The use of the developed composition and method will allow expanding the range of functional flour confectionery products with a reduced gluten content, which is achieved by replacing wheat flour in the composition with a mixture of corn and rye. Optimization of rheological characteristics of shortbread pastry is ensured by enrichment with pectin substances, which help to reduce the water absorption capacity of flour, as well as reduce the formation time and stability of the dough. Deep freezing shortbread pastry allows you to save its nutritional and biological value, as well as technological (rheological) properties. In addition, the shelf life of products is increased, and the freezing time is reduced by 3...10 times compared to the traditional method.

Formula milk companies and allergy healthcare professionals in India.

India is a low-middle income country with a population of 1.4 billion and home to one quarter of the world's children. Exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months and continued breastfeeding until at least 2 years as per global recommendations are common practice. The Indian government and associated organisations have strived to protect breastfeeding, which is important in a country with high under-5 mortality, malnutrition and stunting. Allergic disease is under-recognised in India, but despite the absence of a dedicated allergy medical specialty, awareness of allergy is increasing among healthcare practitioners and in the general population. In high-income countries, overdiagnosis of allergy has become recognised as an issue in recent years. Allergy healthcare professionals have also attracted criticism for close relationships with the formula industry, which appear to have contributed to excessive use of specialised formula products and undermining of breastfeeding. Specialised formula has been used unnecessarily for preventing allergy, based on fraudulent and selectively reported science; and for managing normal infant symptoms which are mislabelled as milk allergy. This forms part of a broader formula industry corporate strategy to widen the boundaries of illness in order to expand sales and markets. In India, allergic disease management is hindered by limited understanding of the disease entity among practitioners, low access to diagnostics, limited healthcare resources, high exposure to air pollution and a large, diverse population. Data specific to India on allergic disease prevalence and interpreting allergy diagnostics are incomplete. The knowledge gaps mean allergy management in India is often extrapolated from guidance developed in high-income countries with low breastfeeding rates. As the allergy specialty develops in India, local guidance and practice will need to recognise the threat that current allergy practice poses to India's normative infant feeding culture, and ensure that breastfeeding continues to be supported at all levels.

Food allergens in oral care products

Food allergies are a growing concern, especially in Western societies and can dramatically impact the quality of life of affected individuals. In recent years, various food allergens have been introduced into the oral care industry to improve product properties and provide the best possible treatment. Since small doses of food allergens may be sufficient to trigger allergic reactions, the non-discrimination of the sources of certain excipients in the product composition can compromise the patient's health. Therefore, knowledge and awareness of allergies and product composition among health professionals are critical on behalf of patients’ and consumers’ health. This study aimed to ascertain the presence of dairy products (e.g., cow's milk proteins and lactose), cereals (e.g., gluten, soy, and oats), fruits, nuts, spices, shellfish, and additives as excipients in oral care products for outpatients and products for professional use in the Dental Office. Among the 387 surveyed products, the highest prevalence of food allergens was found in toothpaste, fluoride varnishes, and alginates, mostly in spices and fresh fruits. As food allergies may occur because of erroneous information or a lack of labeling on the allergen list, manufacturers should be more rigorous in declaring allergens on product labeling regarding the safety of consumers.

Analysis of Protein Sequence Identity, Binding Sites, and 3D Structures Identifies Eight Pollen Species and Ten Fruit Species with High Risk of Cross-Reactive Allergies.

Fruit allergens are proteins from fruits or pollen that cause allergy in humans, an increasing food safety concern worldwide. With the globalization of food trade and changing lifestyles and dietary habits, characterization and identification of these allergens are urgently needed to inform public awareness, diagnosis and treatment of allergies, drug design, as well as food standards and regulations. This study conducted a phylogenetic reconstruction and protein clustering among 60 fruit and pollen allergens from 19 species, and analyzed the clusters, in silico, for cross-reactivity (IgE), 3D protein structure prediction, transmembrane and signal peptides, and conserved domains and motifs. Herein, we wanted to predict the likelihood of their interaction with antibodies, as well as cross-reactivity between the many allergens derived from the same protein families, as the potential for cross-reactivity complicates the management of fruit allergies. Phylogenetic analysis classified the allergens into four clusters. The first cluster (n = 9) comprising pollen allergens showed a high risk of cross-reactivity between eight allergens, with Bet v1 conserved domain, but lacked a transmembrane helix and signal peptide. The second (n = 10) cluster similarly suggested a high risk of cross-reactivity among allergens, with Prolifin conserved domain. However, the group lacked a transmembrane helix and signal peptide. The third (n = 13) and fourth (n = 29) clusters comprised allergens with significant sequence diversity, predicted low risk of cross-reactivity, and showed both a transmembrane helix and signal peptide. These results are critical for treatment and drug design that mostly use transmembrane proteins as targets. The prediction of high risk of cross-reactivity indicates that it may be possible to design a generic drug that will be effective against the wide range of allergens. Therefore, in the past, we may have avoided the array of fruit species if one was allergic to any one member of the cluster.

Evaluation of knowledge and awareness level of allergic conjunctivitis among people of Killa Abdullah district of Baluchistan

BackgroundAllergic conjunctivitis is a growing health issue impacting the everyday life of patients and their families. Other characteristics of their everyday life activities such as occupational, and social life are impacted. Therefore an enhanced awareness and knowledge of allergic conjunctivitis, its diagnosis, and treatment is important. This study was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness level of allergic conjunctivitis among people of Killa Abdullah, Baluchistan. MethodsA quantitative cross-sectional survey was carried out among 475 respondents from Killa Abdullah, Baluchistan, Pakistan. Every respondent completed a questionnaire focused on awareness and knowledge of ocular allergy. ResultsOut of the 475 participants, 112 (23.6%) know about allergic conjunctivitis. The majority of which being students, with the knowledge level of conjunctivitis normally low. Most of the respondents had collected information mainly from media and the internet. There was a statistically significant relationship between knowledge, and program of study (P<0.001). ConclusionThe overall percentage of knowledge level about allergic conjunctivitis was low. The students who attend the study program their knowledge level being influenced. Public health measures are advised for educating the population on the prevention and control of allergic conjunctivitis in addition to associated complications.

It takes a village: perceptions of Winnipeg parents, students, teachers and school staff regarding the impact of food allergy on school-age students and their families

BackgroundThe entire school community contributes to the safety of students with food allergy. We sought to determine the food allergy perceptions and education needs of parents, students and school staff, with the goal of enhancing food allergy education in schools.MethodsWith ethics approval from the University of Manitoba and participating school divisions, elementary school principals emailed SurveyMonkey® Questionnaire Links to their parent/caregiver contact list and school staff. We compared anonymous responses of parents of children with and without food allergy, students with and without food allergy, and parents and school staff using chi-squared tests.ResultsParticipants included 561 parents of school-age children (ages 7–12 years, 19% with food allergy), 61 students (23% with food allergy), and 203 school staff (62% teachers, 88% with experience managing food allergies in the classroom). Parents of children with and without food allergy considered food allergy when sending food to school (98% vs. 96%, p = 0.39). More parents of children with food allergy thought that greater information and awareness about food allergy was needed (74% vs. 44%, p < 0.0001). Students with food allergy were most interested (100%) in having other students learn not to bully and how to help during a reaction. Students without food allergy were most interested in learning how to prevent a reaction (70%). Fewer parents than school staff thought that food allergies in the classroom impacted teachers’ time (2.1% vs. 21%, p < 0.0001) and that teachers knew how to treat allergic reactions to foods (34% vs. 94%, p < 0.0001). More parents than school staff thought that banning foods from classrooms kept allergic students safe (65% vs. 34%, p = 0.006) and that having a Food Allergy Educator speak at school would be helpful (99% vs. 67%, p < 0.0001).ConclusionsFood allergy education is necessary for the entire school community and should include parents of school-aged children with and without food allergy, students with and without food allergy, and teachers and school staff. These members of the school community recognized their own and others’ needs for increased food allergy education and awareness in the school setting.

Dissemination of atopic dermatitis and food allergy information to pregnant women in an online childbirth preparation class.

Evidence-based allergy prevention strategies have been reported, but strategies for dissemination have not been evaluated. Improving health literacy and awareness of allergies in pregnant mothers is 1 example of dissemination and implementation science that could help prevent allergic diseases and promote early detection of allergic diseases in children. We evaluated the usefulness of an online childbirth preparation class about prevention and early detection of allergic diseases in offspring. From January 2021 to August 2021, an online allergy class for pregnant mothers was provided at the hospital in Tokyo. We conducted an online survey about allergy topics before and after the online childbirth preparation class. A total of 106 pregnant women attended the online allergy class, and 92 (86.8%) responded to the online survey. Of the respondents, 90 (97.8%) were worried about the development of allergies in their children. The topic that attracted the most attention in the lecture was the prevention of atopic dermatitis by means of skin care. The percentages of correct responses regarding allergy prevention strategies increased after the class. All mothers believed that the class was useful, the information should be disseminated to the public, and the practices should be implemented. In online childbirth preparation classes, information about allergy based on dissemination and implementation science could strengthen allergy literacy among pregnant women.

Knowledge and awareness of ocular allergy among Jeddah population.

Background:Ocular allergy is one of the common conditions that affects patients from different age groups. Public awareness about the disease is crucial for reducing the incidence of ocular allergy.Aim:The present study aims to evaluate the knowledge level of the general population in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia toward ocular allergy.Methodology:This is a cross-sectional study that included the distribution of an online survey to the public living in Jeddah. The survey included questions to identify common demographics, knowledge, and awareness about ocular allergy signs and symptoms, prevention and treatment, and sources of information. Statistical analysis included descriptive and comparative analysis using Chi-square test and one-way ANOVA test. SPSS version 26 was used for data analysis.Results:In total, 1207 responded to this survey and were included in the analysis. Among them, 71% were females, 36.8% were in the age group of 15–25 years, 74.9% had a bachelor’s degree, 60.4% were non-medical specialists, 13.2% were from the faculty of medicine. More than half of the participants were aware that ocular allergy affects millions of people globally every year. It is one of the most common eye conditions, itching is the primary source of discomfort, 15%–20% of the world population have ocular allergy, the disease causes discomfort and pain within the eye caused by frequent rubbing of the eye, and that symptoms of ocular allergy include redness, itching, tearing, discharge, blurred vision, and photophobia. Further, 64.9% thought that avoiding the source of triggers can help prevent ocular allergy. Social media was the most common source of information among 19.3%. The average score was 15.6 ± 6.1 out of 27 points; 42.6% of the responders had fair knowledge (50%–75%) about ocular allergy. The age group of 15–25 years (P < 0.001), bachelor’s degree holders (P = 0.013), and individuals with a medical background (P = 0.003) were associated with significantly higher mean scores. Males (P = 0.003), age group of 15–25 years (P = 0.024), individuals with a medical background (P < 0.001) had significantly good knowledge about ocular allergy.Conclusion:The knowledge level of the general population about ocular allergy in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is fair and requires improvement.

Fatal anaphylaxis due to peanut exposure from oral intercourse

BackgroundIntimacy-related allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are under-reported due to social stigma, lack of awareness, and misdiagnosis. The differential diagnosis for intimacy-related anaphylaxis is extensive and includes systemic human seminal plasma allergy, exercise-induced anaphylaxis, asthma exacerbation, latex allergy, and transference of food or drug allergens through saliva or seminal fluid.Case presentationTwo adolescents met on a popular dating phone application. One individual had a long-standing history of asthma and peanut allergy. Although they never kissed, the male with peanut allergy received fellatio, while the other male had eaten peanut butter before they met. During fellatio, the peanut allergic male developed respiratory symptoms, used his bronchodilator, and collapsed. He remained unconscious despite aggressive interventions by emergency personnel called to the site. The clinical history and autopsy results suggested anaphylaxis to peanut allergen exposure from the intimate exposure as the cause of death.Discussion and conclusionsTo date, nearly all reported cases of intimacy-related anaphylaxis involve symptomatic women. This is the first report of intimacy-related anaphylaxis involving men who have sex with men and the first report of potential allergen transfer from oral mucosa to a patient receiving fellatio. Based on the paucity of published cases, death from intimacy-related anaphylaxis is exceedingly rare. Post-mortem analysis is inherently difficult, as an elevated tryptase level has myriad potential causes; nevertheless, the authors suggest that intimacy-related anaphylaxis due to peanut allergy is the most likely diagnosis. With increasing popularity of relationship applications, especially amongst stigmatized populations, this case highlights the importance of allergy awareness and patient education to decrease risk, particularly in the adolescent population, who are already at increased risk of severe anaphylaxis. Especially amongst those participating in intimate activities, disclosure of one’s allergies warrants discussion, as the outcome can be fatal. Our case demonstrates the crucial need for increased advocacy in food allergy, education around intimacy-related anaphylaxis, and the importance of allergy awareness and prevention across all populations.
