Evaluation of stormwater runoff pollutant distributions combined with land-use information in a regional karst aquifer in Texas, USA.

Fast urbanization can result in significant stormwater runoff pollution due to changes in land use. A 3-year study on the distribution and temporal variations of urban water pollutants in stormwater runoff was conducted, with a specific focus on the influence of land-use patterns in the recharge zone of a regional karst aquifer in Texas (Edwards Aquifer). The presence and concentration of various water pollutants including total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia and phosphate), total carbon (TC) and total organic carbon (TOC), oil and grease (O&G), and eight heavy metals (Fe, Mg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd) were measured in stormwater samples collected from three bioswales. Results show that average TSS in site S1 (598.87mg/L) and S2 (628.69mg/L), COD in site S1 (103.97mg/L), phosphate in sites S1 (1.44mg/L) and S3 (0.65mg/L), and O&G (ranging from 50.63 to 84.32mg/L) in all three sites surpassed the national average (NSQD). While residential areas were identified as the main sources of nutrients, roads and parking lots were associated with heavy metals. Temporal variations indicated the effect of antecedent dry days on the concentrations of TSS and phosphate. Growing seasons as well as pet feces were associated with elevated nitrate concentrations in residential areas. Organic carbon was found overall higher during warmer months, while heavy metals during cooler months. The study also identified specific land-use practices that can be enhanced to mitigate stormwater pollution, such as the implementation of permeable pavements, rain gardens, and stricter waste disposal regulations. The results of this study offer valuable insights for enhancing stormwater management strategies to better mitigate stormwater pollution in urban regions.

Performance evaluation and parameter estimation of the advanced primary filtration (APF) process in wastewater treatment plants

Conventional technologies employed in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) demand significant energy consumption. Concurrently, the wastewater infrastructure is experiencing a heavy strain as a result of the increased influent loads and pollutants. Advanced primary filtration (APF) is an emerging wastewater treatment process for early removal of suspended solids from raw wastewater. In this work, the APF process comprises of a two-stage filtration system, consisting of a proprietary rotating belt filter (RBF) (collectively known as microsieve) followed by a proprietary continuous backwash upflow media filter (CBUMF). The principal focus of this study is the assessment of the APF process performance, and the prediction of the total suspended solids (TSS) effluent concentrations of the APF process, using a parameter estimation method. According to pilot scale experimental results, the percentages of TSS (average TSS removal rate of 51 %) and biological oxygen demand (BOD5) (average BOD5 removal rate of 30 %), removed by the microsieve were notably higher compared to conventional primary treatment (sedimentation). The removal efficiency of the APF process during stable operation, varied from 69 to 86 % for TSS, as compared to 50–70 % typically achieved with primary sedimentation. The removal performance of BOD5 varied from 44 to 82 %, as compared to 25 to 40 % typically achieved with primary sedimentation. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates for the APF process ranged between 62 and 90%, as compared to 25–40 % typically achieved with primary sedimentation. The early removal of TSS prior to aeration tank has the potential to significantly enhance the capacity of the WWTP and decrease the energy requirements of the aeration tank. A high degree of concordance between model predictions and experimental data was observed. This study demonstrated the potential of using the APF process for the early removal of TSS from raw municipal wastewater just upstream of the aeration tank.

A comparative study on optimizing electrocoagulation for organic contaminant removal in shale gas fracturing wastewater

Study of an eco‐efficient method for wastewater treatment and safe agricultural reuse: Effect of influent splitting rates on effluent quality parameters

AbstractIn this study, an eco‐efficient scheme (EES) that is both selective and environmentally viable is proposed and compared to a conventional activated sludge scheme (CAS). The results showed an optimal process operation and a significant difference (p < 0.001) in organic load and nutrient removal efficiencies between CAS and EES. Moreover, statistical analysis based on variance and principal component analysis highlighted a significant positive correlation between influent/effluent wastewater parameters, performance indicators and adopted process configuration. Thus, the average concentrations of activated sludge biomass were 3.11 ± 0.48 gTSS.L−1 and 2.51 ± 0.37 gVSS.L−1, and the volatile suspended solids (VSS) to average total suspended solids (TSS) ratio, which indicates the rate of active fraction of activated sludge biomass and the degree of mineralization, was approximately 81%± 2%, suggesting the optimal development of activated sludge biomass in the bioreactor. Furthermore, chemical oxygen demand and 5‐day biological oxygen demand removal efficiencies in CAS were 94% and 97% versus 55% and 66% in EES, respectively. Nitrogen abatement in terms of total Kjeldahl nitrogen and performed by CAS was approximately 85% and 86%, respectively, and by EES 41% and 40%, respectively. Phosphorus abatements were comparable in both CAS and EES. The effluent hygienic quality parameters after disinfection conformed to applied standards for safe reuse. For agricultural purposes and environmental and socio‐economic considerations, we must consider further ecological methods. Selecting organic matter and nutrients can also provide hygienic effluent; therefore, the eco‐efficient process constitutes a promising eco‐friendly technology.

Municipal wastewater treatment with corrugated PVC carrier anaerobic baffled reactor.

The anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) is a promising solution for decentralized wastewater treatment due to its low operation cost as compared to the activated sludge process, but it requires comparatively higher hydraulic retention time (HRT). This ultimately increases land requirement, capital and construction cost of treatment plant. This study investigates performance of ABR using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) corrugated pipe as carrier media to improve biomass retention capacity and treatment performance of reactor with the aim to reduce HRT. Comparative performance of two ABRs with and without carrier media was analyzed under mesophilic conditions (35 ± 1 °C) for organics and total suspended solids (TSS) removal at HRTs of 24, 18, 12, 8, 6 and 4 h. Results showed that at HRTs of 24-08 h, the organics removal performance of the carrier anaerobic baffled reactor (CABR) was better than ABR and was in the range of 77-81% for CABR as compared to 64-70% for ABR. However, on further decrease in HRT to 6 h, CABR sustained the treatment with organics removal of 80%, while ABR performance reduced to 58%, creating a performance difference of 38%. Average total suspended solids (TSS) removal was in the range of 76-83% at all HRTs for both reactors. Therefore, this study identified CABR with PVC carrier media as an effective low-HRT reactor for organics and SS removal with less land area requirement.

Spatial and temporal dynamics of suspended sediment concentrations in coastal waters of the South China Sea, off Sarawak, Borneo: ocean colour remote sensing observations and analysis

Abstract. High-quality ocean colour observations are increasingly accessible to support various monitoring and research activities for water quality measurements. In this paper, we present a newly developed regional total suspended solids (TSSs) empirical model using MODIS Aqua's Rrs(530) and Rrs(666) reflectance bands to investigate the spatial and temporal variation in TSS dynamics along the southwest coast of Sarawak, Borneo, with the application of the Open Data Cube (ODC) platform. The performance of this TSS retrieval model was evaluated using error metrics (bias = 1.0, MAE = 1.47, and RMSE = 0.22, in milligrams per litre) with a log10 transformation prior to calculation as well as using a k-fold cross-validation technique. The temporally averaged map of the TSS distribution, using daily MODIS Aqua satellite datasets from 2003 until 2019, revealed that large TSS plumes were detected – particularly in the Lupar and Rajang coastal areas – on a yearly basis. The average TSS concentration in these coastal waters was in the range of 15–20 mg L−1. Moreover, the spatial map of the TSS coefficient of variation (CV) indicated strong TSS variability (approximately 90 %) in the Samunsam–Sematan coastal areas, which could potentially impact nearby coral reef habitats in this region. Study of the temporal TSS variation provides further evidence that monsoonal patterns drive the TSS release in these tropical water systems, with distinct and widespread TSS plume variations observed between the northeast and southwest monsoon periods. A map of relative TSS distribution anomalies revealed strong spatial TSS variations in the Samunsam–Sematan coastal areas, while 2010 recorded a major increase (approximately 100 %) and widespread TSS distribution with respect to the long-term mean. Furthermore, study of the contribution of river discharge to the TSS distribution showed a weak correlation across time at both the Lupar and Rajang river mouth points. The variability in the TSS distribution across coastal river points was studied by investigating the variation in the TSS pixels at three transect points, stretching from the river mouth into territorial and open-water zones, for eight main rivers. The results showed a progressively decreasing pattern of nearly 50 % in relation to the distance from shore, with exceptions in the northeast regions of the study area. Essentially, our findings demonstrate that the TSS levels on the southwest coast of Sarawak are within local water quality standards, promoting various marine and socio-economic activities. This study presents the first observation of TSS distributions in Sarawak coastal systems with the application of remote sensing technologies and aims at enhancing coastal sediment management strategies for the sustainable use of coastal waters and their resources.

Long Term (1998–2019) Changes in Water Quality Parameters as a Function of Freshwater Inflow in a River–Bay Continuum

Freshwater inflow is important in transporting nutrients to a bay. We hypothesized that freshwater inflow was transporting dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus to the Inland Bays. We analyzed long term (1998–2019) water quality data collected from Indian River, Indian River Bay, Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, Little Assawoman Bay, and Rehoboth Bay watersheds. Freshwater inflow altered nitrite+nitrate (N-NO2_3) concentrations in all but Lewes-Rehoboth Canal watershed, whereas phosphate (P-PO4) concentrations in all watersheds were altered by freshwater inflow and metabolic processes in the water. The average N-NO2_3 and P-PO4 were higher than the standard (0.14 and 0.01 mg/L for N-NO2_3+N-NH3 and P-PO4, respectively) for growing seasons (March–October) i.e., 0.83 + 0.14 and 0.09 mg/L in Indian River; 0.79 + 0.10 and 0.06 mg/L in Indian River Bay; 0.21 + 0.15 and 0.09 mg/L in Lewes-Rehoboth Canal; 0.49 + 0.10 and 0.11 mg/L in Little Assawoman Bay; 1.0 + 0.08 and 0.06 mg/L in Rehoboth Bay. Average total suspended solids in the Indian River (33), Indian River Bay (22), and Lewes-Rehoboth Canal (31) were higher than the standard concentrations, i.e., 20 mg/L for the Inland Bays. With the evidence of higher dissolved nutrients and low dissolved oxygen concentrations, need for nutrient load reduction and water quality monitoring are paramount for the sustainable management of Inland Bays.

Evaluation of Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters Design Features in Tropical Urban Cities: A Case Study in Singapore

In Singapore, active, beautiful, clean waters design features (ABCWDFs), such as rain gardens and vegetated swales, are used as a sustainable approach for stormwater management. Field monitoring studies characterising the performance of these design features in the tropical region are currently limited, hampering the widespread implementation of these systems. This study characterised the performance of individual ABCWDFs in the tropical climate context by monitoring a rain garden (FB7) and a vegetated swale (VS1) that were implemented in a 4-ha urban residential precinct for a period of 15 months. Results showed that total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations were low in the new residential precinct runoff, leading to poor removal efficiency despite the effluent concentrations of individual ABCWDFs that were within the local stormwater treatment objectives. Average TSS, TP and TN EMCs of four sub-catchment outlets were lower (23.2 mg/L, 0.11 mg/L and 1.00 mg/L, respectively) when compared to the runoff quality of the major catchments in Singapore, potentially demonstrating that the ABCWDFs are effective in improving the catchment runoff quality. Findings from this study can help to better understand the performance of ABCWDFs receiving low influent concentrations and implications for further investigations to improve stormwater runoff management in the tropics.

Anaerobic Dynamic Membrane Bioreactor Development to Facilitate Organic Waste Conversion to Medium-Chain Carboxylic Acids and Their Downstream Recovery

Platform chemicals such as medium-chain carboxylic acids (MCCAs) can be produced from organic waste streams via chain elongation in anaerobic mixed-culture bioreactors. A product recovery system is needed to collect MCCAs from the bioreactor effluent. Membrane-based liquid–liquid extraction, the most commonly used product recovery approach, requires suspended solids removal from the bioreactor effluent to avoid membrane fouling. An anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) was developed to evaluate MCCA production from brewery and prefermented food waste and to produce a permeate with low suspended solids to facilitate downstream product recovery. The AnDMBR employed an inexpensive stainless-steel mesh as the support material for the development of a biofilm or dynamic membrane, which was responsible for solids–liquid separation. The AnDMBR produced a permeate quality with an average total suspended solids (TSS) concentration of 0.12 g L–1, while the average bioreactor TSS concentration was two orders of magnitude higher (21.6 g L–1). A maximum solids removal efficiency of ≥99% was achieved and good permeate quality was sustained for over 200 days without fouling control or cleaning the support material. In addition to solids–liquid separation, the dynamic membrane was responsible for a substantial fraction of the biological activity of the AnDMBR. The relative activity of Clostridiales, as determined by 16S rRNA sequencing, correlated with MCCA production and was higher in the dynamic membrane (20.0 ± 4.9%) than in the suspended biomass (5.2 ± 2.7%) in the bioreactor. This observation was consistent with MCCA production data as the permeate MCCA concentrations were significantly (p = 8.2 × 10–5) higher than that in the bioreactor, suggesting that the dynamic membrane biofilm contributed to chain elongation.

Large-Volume Samplers for Efficient Composite Sampling and Particle Characterization in Sewer Systems

The assessment of pollution from sewer discharges requires flexible and reliable sampling methods. The characteristics of the sampling system must be known to allow comparison with other studies. Large volume samplers (LVS) are increasingly used for monitoring in sewer systems and surface waters. This article provides a comprehensive description of this widely applicable sampling system, gives insight into its comparability to standard methods, and provides recommendations for researchers and practitioners involved in water quality monitoring and urban water management. Two methods for subsampling from LVS are presented, i.e., collection of homogenized or sedimented samples. Results from a sampling campaign at combined sewer overflows (CSOs) were used to investigate the comparability of both subsampling methods and conventional autosamplers (AS). Event mean concentrations (EMC) of total suspended solids (TSS) derived from homogenized LVS samples and AS pollutographs were comparable. TSS-EMC of homogenized and sedimented LVS samples were also comparable. However, differences were found for particle size distribution and organic matter content. Consequently, sedimented LVS samples, which contained solids masses in the range of 3–70 g, are recommended to be used for particle characterization. The differences between homogenized and sedimented LVS samples, e.g., the quality of homogenization and the stability of samples during sedimentation in LVS, should be further investigated. Based on LVS results, average TSS concentrations of 50–60 mg/L were found for CSOs from centralized treatment facilities in Bavaria. With a median share of 84%, particles <63 µm were the dominant fraction.

Pilot and Field Studies of Modular Bioretention Tree System with Talipariti tiliaceum and Engineered Soil Filter Media in the Tropics

Stormwater runoff management is challenging in a highly urbanised tropical environment due to the unique space constraints and tropical climate conditions. A modular bioretention tree (MBT) with a small footprint and a reduced on-site installation time was explored for application in a tropical environment. Tree species used in the pilot studies were Talipariti tiliaceum (TT1) and Sterculia macrophylla (TT2). Both of the MBTs could effectively remove total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), zinc, copper, cadmium, and lead with removal efficiencies of greater than 90%. Total nitrogen (TN) removal was noted to be significantly higher in the wet period compared to the dry period (p < 0.05). Variation in TN removal between TT1 and TT2 were attributed to the nitrogen uptake and the root formation of the trees species. A field study MBT using Talipariti tiliaceum had a very clean effluent quality, with average TSS, TP, and TN effluent EMC of 4.8 mg/L, 0.04 mg/L, and 0.27 mg/L, respectively. Key environmental factors were also investigated to study their impact on the performance of BMT. It was found that the initial pollutant concentration, the dissolved fraction of influent pollutants, and soil moisture affect the performance of the MBT. Based on the results from this study, the MBT demonstrates good capability in the improvement of stormwater runoff quality.

Analysis of suspended sediment distribution in Lamteng waters, Nasi Island, Aceh Besar District, Indonesia

The presence of sediment in the water column that moves without touching the bottom is known as suspended sediment. The distribution of suspended sediments in the coastal area is strongly influenced by river flows and ocean currents. Thus, this study aims to determine the distribution pattern and level of suspended sediment concentration in Lamteng waters, Nasi Island, Aceh Besar District. This research was conducted in October and December 2019. Samples were taken from 15 stations from the research location, each in October and December. Total suspended solids (TSS) samples were analysed using the Gravimetric method, in which the TSS value distribution was presented using the Natural Neighbour method. The results showed that the average TSS value in October was higher than in December. TSS in Lamteng waters shows a value that exceeds the quality standard value based on the Ministry of Environment.

The effects of land use characteristics on urban stormwater quality and watershed pollutant loads

Urban developments can result in higher runoff and nutrient loadings transported to downstream receiving waterbodies. While much effort has been made recently in watershed restoration in the U.S., a lack of recent runoff quality data limits the prediction capability of urban watershed models. The objectives of this study was to fill an existing information gap on how rainfall and land uses interact and affect such loadings. This study instrumented six coastal urban catchments, each dominated by a single land use. We measured total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS), total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), ortho-P, and nitrate concentrations in runoff from 30 storm events over one year from six urban land uses, namely commercial, industrial, transportation, open space, low density residential, and high density residential. Results indicated that the median event mean concentrations (EMCs) for TSS, TP, and TN were 30 (19–34), 0.31 (0.26–0.31), and 0.94 (0.73–1.25) mg L−1, respectively. TSS EMCs from the open space and industrial land uses were significantly greater than other land uses; there were positive correlations between TN concentrations and imperviousness and between TP concentrations and turf coverage. Both the amount and intensity of rainfall positively influenced TSS concentrations in runoff regardless of land use. Using the collected data, this study developed a generic equation for predicting the loading of a pollutant as a function of rainfall depth. This equation was verified by comparing its predictions with the simulations of a sufficiently-calibrated water quality model in terms of TSS, TP, and TN loadings from various land uses in another coastal catchment for a period of ten years. Average TSS, TN, and TP loadings from the catchment were estimated to be 0.86, 0.03, and 0.01 kg ha−1 cm−1, respectively.

Upgradation of conventional MBBR into Aerobic/Anoxic/Aerobic configuration: A case study of carbon and nitrogen removal based sewage treatment plant

The thrust of this study was to assess the upgradation of an existing 3.5 million liters per day (MLD) full-scale conventional MBBR-based sewage treatment plant (STP) into Aerobic/Anoxic/Aerobic configuration. Initially, the plant was designed and constructed for achieving BOD and TSS to <30 mg/L and <50 mg/L, respectively. Recently, due to the advent of stringent effluent standards for BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), and TN (Total Nitrogen) to <10 mg/L, with a strong emphasis on non-potable re-use of treated effluent, the existing system needed intensive upgradation. The upgraded STP was modified from two hours to five hours of hydraulic retention time (HRT). The upgraded plant was examined by removing organic carbon and nitrogen from municipal wastewater through both partial nitrification-denitrification (PND) by aerobic and anoxic reactors and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process by PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol) gel aerobic reactor. After ten months of operation and monitoring, the plant has reached its upgraded effluent discharge standard. It was found that average BOD, COD, TSS, TN, and TP (Total Phosphorus) concentrations were 8 mg/L, 25 mg/L, 12 mg/L, 9 mg/L and 5 mg/L respectively, with 91 %, 90 %, 93 %, 84 %, and 64 %, removal efficiency. It was observed that PVA-gel beads are not only efficient for carbon removal (BOD & COD) but also achieve high SND rates.

Surface runoff and nutrient dynamics in cover crop-soybean systems in the Upper Midwest.

Relay-cropping of the novel oilseeds winter camelina (Camelina sativa L.) and pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L.) with short-season crops such as soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] can provide economic and environmental incentives for adopting winter cover crop practices in the U.S. Upper Midwest. However, their ability to reduce nutrient loss in surface runoff is unknown. Accordingly, surface runoff and quality were evaluated during three seasonal phases (cover, intercrop, and soybean) over 2 yr in four cover crop-soybean treatments (pennycress, winter camelina, forage radish [Raphanus sativus L.], and winter rye [Secale cereale L.]) compared with no-till and chisel-till fallow treatments. Runoff was collected with Gerlach troughs and assessed for concentrations and loads of NO3 - -N, total mineral N, soluble reactive P (SRP), and total suspended solids (TSS). Cumulative runoff and nutrient loads were greater during the winter cover phase because of increased snow melt and freeze-thaw released nutrients from living vegetation. In contrast, cumulative TSS was greater during intercrop and soybean phases due to high-intensity rainfall events with an open soybean canopy. Average TSS loads during the intercrop phase were reduced by 75% in pennycress compared with fallow and radish treatments. During the soybean phase, average TSS, total mineral N, and SRP loads were generally elevated in cover crop treatments compared with no-till. Overwintering cover crops may contribute to mobility of nutrients solubilized from living or decomposing vegetation; however, this was balanced by their potential to reduce runoff and TSS during high-intensity spring rains.

Remote Sensing Evaluation of Total Suspended Solids Dynamic with Markov Model: A Case Study of Inland Reservoir across Administrative Boundary in South China.

Accurate and quantitative assessment of the impact of natural environmental changes and human activities on total suspended solids (TSS) concentration is one of the important components of water environment protection. Due to the limits of traditional cross-sectional point monitoring, a novel water quality evaluation method based on the Markov model and remote sensing retrieval is proposed to realize the innovation of large-scale spatial monitoring across administrative boundaries. Additionally, to explore the spatiotemporal characteristics and driving factors of TSS, a new three-band remote sensing model of TSS was built by regression analysis for the inland reservoir using the synchronous field spectral data, water quality samples and remote sensing data in the trans-provincial Hedi Reservoir in the Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces of South China. The results show that: (1) The three-band model based on the OLI sensor explained about 82% of the TSS concentration variation () with an acceptable validation accuracy (), which is basically the first model of its kind available in South China. (2) The TSS concentration has spatial distribution characteristics of high upstream and low downstream, where the average TSS at 31.54 mg/L in the upstream are 2.5 times those of the downstream (12.55 mg/L). (3) Different seasons and rainfall are important factors affecting the TSS in the upstream cross-border area, the TSS in the dry season are higher with average TSS of 33.66 mg/L and TSS are negatively correlated with rainfall from upstream mankind activity. Generally, TSS are higher in rainy seasons than those in dry seasons. However, the result shows that TSS are negatively correlated with rainfall, which means human activities have higher impacts on water quality than climate change. (4) The Markov dynamic evaluation results show that the water quality improvement in the upstream Shijiao Town is the most obvious, especially in 2018, the improvement in the water quality level crossed three levels and the TSS were the lowest. This study provided a technical method for remote sensing dynamic monitoring of water quality in a large reservoir, which is of great significance for remediation of the water environment and the effective evaluation of the river and lake chief system in China.

Reliability and Efficiency of Pollutant Removal in Four-Stage Constructed Wetland of SSVF-SSHF-SSHF-SSVF Type

The present paper reports pollutant removal efficiencies and reliability for a four-stage hybrid constructed wetland (HCW) consisting of the following sequence of subsurface (SS), vertical flow (VF) and horizontal flow (HF) beds: SSVF-SSHF-SSHF-SSVF. The experiments were carried out over a period of three years, with sampling done in each season: winter, spring, summer and autumn. Grab samples of wastewater collected from different stages of treatment were tested for total suspended solids (TSS), BOD5, COD, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). The wetland was found to have a very high efficiency of removal of suspended solids and organics, with relatively little seasonal variability. The three-year average TSS removal efficiency was approximately 92.7%. The effectiveness of elimination of organic compounds was very high throughout the study period at 96.6% BOD5 and 95% COD. The effluent from the four-stage system had significantly lower contents of TN and TP compared to the wastewater discharged from the first two beds of this facility.

Design of urban runoff pollution control based on the Sponge City concept in a large-scale high-plateau mountainous watershed: a case study in Yunnan, China

Abstract China recently commenced the Sponge City initiative for the effective management of urban stormwater runoff. Numerous studies have been carried out to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of low impact development (LID) practices in Sponge City planning and implementation. However, most of the studies were at the site- or subcatchment scale, and few were conducted at the watershed scale, given the dramatically increased routing complexity and number of decision variables. This study demonstrates the cost-effective Sponge City planning process for a 25.90 km2 high-plateau watershed in southwest China. The Stormwater Management Model was coupled with the System for Urban Stormwater Treatment and Analysis Integrated (SUSTAIN) model to perform both continuous simulations and watershed-level optimization analyses, using the reduction of 85% annual runoff volume as the optimization target. Based on over 11,000 optimization runs, a near-optimal aggregated LID scenario was identified for each subcatchment. The aggregated LID size was first converted into a generic LID storage volume for individual subcatchments, and the storage volume was then disaggregated into site-level LID layouts regarding specific site conditions. The disaggregated LID layout yielded an annual average runoff volume reduction of 87.61% and close to 85% reduction for the annual average total suspended solids, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus loads. The systematic approach outlined in this study could be used for watershed-level Sponge City planning and implementation analyses in other cities.

Recovery of calcium phosphate granules from black water using a hybrid upflow anaerobic sludge bed and gas-lift reactor

Adding calcium during anaerobic digestion of vacuum collected black water (BW) in an up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor increased the retention of total phosphorus (P) in the reactor from 51% to 87%. However, the insufficient mixing in the reactor caused cementation and relatively high content of organics in the recovered calcium phosphate (CaP) granules, limiting the P recovery. In this study, the UASB reactor was mixed with an internal gas-lift (UASB-GL) to prevent cementation and to enhance the P content in CaP granules. The novel UASB-GL reactor operated for 300 days, treating concentrated BW. At steady state, the removal of total COD and P was 92% and 90%, respectively. The gas injection created a sludge bed with an average total suspended solids concentration of 73 ± 16 g/L at the bottom and 31 ± 5 g/L at the top of the reactor. The concentration of solid P at the bottom of the reactor was 4.58 ± 1.34 gP/L, while at the top a much lower concentration was obtained (0.75 ± 0.32 gP/L). 89% of the CaP granules was found at the bottom of the reactor. The harvested CaP granules (>0.4 mm diameter) contained on average 7.8 ± 0.6 wt% of P. A potential recovery of 57% of P in BW as CaP granules was calculated, considering actual application of the UASB-GL reactor in source separated sanitation.
