Improved modularity and new features in ipie: Toward even larger AFQMC calculations on CPUs and GPUs at zero and finite temperatures.

ipie is a Python-based auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) package that has undergone substantial improvements since its initial release [Malone et al., J. Chem. Theory Comput. 19(1), 109-121 (2023)]. This paper outlines the improved modularity and new capabilities implemented in ipie. We highlight the ease of incorporating different trial and walker types and the seamless integration of ipie with external libraries. We enable distributed Hamiltonian simulations of large systems that otherwise would not fit on a single central processing unit node or graphics processing unit (GPU) card. This development enabled us to compute the interaction energy of a benzene dimer with 84 electrons and 1512 orbitals with multi-GPUs. Using CUDA and cupy for NVIDIA GPUs, ipie supports GPU-accelerated multi-slater determinant trial wavefunctions [Huang et al. arXiv:2406.08314 (2024)] to enable efficient and highly accurate simulations of large-scale systems. This allows for near-exact ground state energies of multi-reference clusters, [Cu2O2]2+ and [Fe2S2(SCH3)4]2-. We also describe implementations of free projection AFQMC, finite temperature AFQMC, AFQMC for electron-phonon systems, and automatic differentiation in AFQMC for calculating physical properties. These advancements position ipie as a leading platform for AFQMC research in quantum chemistry, facilitating more complex and ambitious computational method development and their applications.

Scalar Relativistic All-Electron and Pseudopotential Ab Initio Study of a Minimal Nitrogenase [Fe(SH)4H]- Model Employing Coupled-Cluster and Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo Many-Body Methods.

Nitrogenase is the only enzyme that can cleave the triple bond in N2, making nitrogen available to organisms. The detailed mechanism of this enzyme is currently not known, and computational studies are complicated by the fact that different density functional theory (DFT) methods give very different energetic results for calculations involving nitrogenase models. Recently, we designed a [Fe(SH)4H]- model with the fifth proton binding either to Fe or S to mimic different possible protonation states of the nitrogenase active site. We showed that the energy difference between these two isomers (ΔE) is hard to estimate with quantum-mechanical methods. Based on nonrelativistic single-reference coupled-cluster (CC) calculations, we estimated that the ΔE is 101 kJ/mol. In this study, we demonstrate that scalar relativistic effects play an important role and significantly affect ΔE. Our best revised single-reference CC estimates for ΔE are 85-91 kJ/mol, including energy corrections to account for contributions beyond triples, core-valence correlation, and basis-set incompleteness error. Among coupled-cluster approaches with approximate triples, the canonical CCSD(T) exhibits the largest error for this problem. Complementary to CC, we also used phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations (ph-AFQMC). We show that with a Hartree-Fock (HF) trial wave function, ph-AFQMC reproduces the CC results within 5 ± 1 kJ/mol. With multi-Slater-determinant (MSD) trials, the results are 82-84 ± 2 kJ/mol, indicating that multireference effects may be rather modest. Among the DFT methods tested, τ-HCTH, r2SCAN with 10-13% HF exchange with and without dispersion, and O3LYP/O3LYP-D4, and B3LYP*/B3LYP*-D4 generally perform the best. The r2SCAN12 (with 12% HF exchange) functional mimics both the best reference MSD ph-AFQMC and CC ΔE results within 2 kJ/mol.

Toward Linear Scaling Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo with Local Natural Orbitals.

We develop a local correlation variant of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) based on local natural orbitals (LNO-AFQMC). In LNO-AFQMC, independent AFQMC calculations are performed for each localized occupied orbital using a truncated set of tailored orbitals. Because the size of this space does not grow with the system size for a target accuracy, the method has linear scaling. Applying LNO-AFQMC to molecular problems containing a few hundred to a thousand orbitals, we demonstrate convergence of total energies with significantly reduced costs. The savings are more significant for larger systems and larger basis sets. However, even for our smallest system studied, we find that LNO-AFQMC is cheaper than canonical AFQMC, in contrast with many other reduced-scaling methods. Perhaps most significantly, we show that energy differences converge much more quickly than total energies, making the method ideal for applications in chemistry and material science. Our work paves the way for linear scaling AFQMC calculations of strongly correlated systems, which would have a transformative effect on ab initio quantum chemistry.

Ab initio electronic density in solids by many-body plane-wave auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations

We present accurate many-body results of the electronic densities in several solid materials, including Si, NaCl, and Cu. These results are obtained using the ab initio auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method working in a plane-wave basis with norm-conserving, multiple-projector pseudopotentials. AFQMC has been shown to be an excellent many-body total energy method. Computation of observables and correlation functions other than the ground-state energy requires back-propagation, whose adaption and implementation in the plane-wave basis AFQMC framework are discussed in the present paper. This development allows us to compute correlation functions, electronic densities, and interatomic forces, paving the way for geometry optimizations and calculations of thermodynamic properties in solids. Finite supercell size effects are considerably more subtle in the many-body framework than in independent-electron calculations. We analyze the convergence of the electronic density, and obtain best estimates for the thermodynamic limit. The densities from several typical density functionals are benchmarked against our near-exact results. The electronic densities we obtained can also be used to help construct improved density functionals.

Accelerating the convergence of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo in solids with optimized Gaussian basis sets.

We investigate the use of optimized correlation-consistent Gaussian basis sets for the study of insulating solids with auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC). The exponents of the basis set are optimized through the minimization of the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) energy in a small unit cell of the solid. We compare against other alternative basis sets proposed in the literature, namely, calculations in the Kohn-Sham basis and in the natural orbitals of an MP2 calculation. We find that our optimized basis sets accelerate the convergence of the AFQMC correlation energy compared to a Kohn-Sham basis and offer similar convergence to MP2 natural orbitals at a fraction of the cost needed to generate them. We also suggest the use of an improved, method independent, MP2-based basis set correction that significantly reduces the required basis set sizes needed to converge the correlation energy. With these developments, we study the relative performance of these basis sets in LiH, Si, and MgO and determine that our optimized basis sets yield the most consistent results as a function of volume. Using these optimized basis sets, we systematically converge the AFQMC calculations to the complete basis set and thermodynamic limit and find excellent agreement with experiment for the systems studied. Although we focus on AFQMC, our basis set generation procedure is independent of the subsequent correlated wavefunction method used.

QMCPACK: Advances in the development, efficiency, and application of auxiliary field and real-space variational and diffusion quantum Monte Carlo.

We review recent advances in the capabilities of the open source ab initio Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) package QMCPACK and the workflow tool Nexus used for greater efficiency and reproducibility. The auxiliary field QMC (AFQMC) implementation has been greatly expanded to include k-point symmetries, tensor-hypercontraction, and accelerated graphical processing unit (GPU) support. These scaling and memory reductions greatly increase the number of orbitals that can practically be included in AFQMC calculations, increasing the accuracy. Advances in real space methods include techniques for accurate computation of bandgaps and for systematically improving the nodal surface of ground state wavefunctions. Results of these calculations can be used to validate application of more approximate electronic structure methods, including GW and density functional based techniques. To provide an improved foundation for these calculations, we utilize a new set of correlation-consistent effective core potentials (pseudopotentials) that are more accurate than previous sets; these can also be applied in quantum-chemical and other many-body applications, not only QMC. These advances increase the efficiency, accuracy, and range of properties that can be studied in both molecules and materials with QMC and QMCPACK.

An efficient method for strongly correlated electrons in two-dimensions.

This work deals with the problem of strongly correlated electrons in two-dimensions. We give a reduced density matrix (RDM) based tool through which the ground-state energy is given as a functional of the natural orbitals and their occupation numbers. Specifically, the Piris Natural Orbital Functional 7 (PNOF7) is used for studying the 2D Hubbard model and hydrogen square lattices. The singlet ground-state is studied, as well as the doublet mixed quantum state obtained by extracting an electron from the system. Our method satisfies two-index necessary N-representability conditions of the two-particle RDM (2RDM) and guarantees the conservation of the total spin. We show the ability of PNOF7 to describe strong correlation effects in two-dimensional (2D) systems by comparing our results with the exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), and auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations. PNOF7 overcomes variational 2RDM methods with two- and three-index positivity N-representability conditions, reducing computational cost to mean-field scaling. Consistent results are obtained for small and large systems up to 144 electrons, weak and strong correlation regimes, and many filling situations. Unlike other methods, there is no dependence on dimensionality in the results obtained with PNOF7 and no particular difficulties have been observed to converge PNOF7 away from half-filling. Smooth double occupancy of sites is obtained, regardless of the filling. Symmetric dissociation of 2D hydrogen lattices shows that long-range nondynamic correlation dramatically affects electron detachment energies. PNOF7 compares well with DMRG along the dissociation curve.

Hamiltonian symmetries in auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations for electronic structure

We describe how to incorporate symmetries of the Hamiltonian into auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations (AFQMC). Focusing on the case of Abelian symmetries, we show that the computational cost of most steps of an AFQMC calculation is reduced by $N_k^{-1}$, where $N_k$ is the number of irreducible representations of the symmetry group. We apply the formalism to a molecular system as well as to several crystalline solids. In the latter case, the lattice translational group provides increasing savings as the number of k points is increased, which is important in enabling calculations that approach the thermodynamic limit. The extension to non-Abelian symmetries is briefly discussed.

Local Embedding and Effective Downfolding in the Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo Method.

A local embedding and effective downfolding scheme has been developed and implemented in the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method. A local cluster in which electrons are fully correlated is defined, and the frozen orbital method is used on the remainder of the system to construct an effective Hamiltonian, which operates within the local cluster. Local embedding, which involves only the occupied sector, has previously been employed in the context of Co/graphene. Here, the methodology is extended in order to allow for effective downfolding of the virtual sector, thus allowing for significant reduction in the computational effort required for AFQMC calculations. The system size, which can be feasibly treated with AFQMC, is therefore greatly extended as only a single local cluster is explicitly correlated at the AFQMC level of theory. The approximation is controlled by the separate choice of the spatial size of the active occupied region ( Ro) and of the active virtual region ( Rv). The systematic dependence of the AFQMC energy on Ro and Rv is investigated, and it is found that relative AFQMC energies of physical and chemical interest converge rapidly to the full AFQMC treatment (i.e., using no embedding or downfolding).

Efficient Ab Initio Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations in Gaussian Bases via Low-Rank Tensor Decomposition.

We describe an algorithm to reduce the cost of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) calculations for the electronic structure problem. The technique uses a nested low-rank factorization of the electron repulsion integral (ERI). While the cost of conventional AFQMC calculations in Gaussian bases scales as , where N is the size of the basis, we show that ground-state energies can be computed through tensor decomposition with reduced memory requirements and subquartic scaling. The algorithm is applied to hydrogen chains and square grids, water clusters, and hexagonal BN. In all cases, we observe significant memory savings and, for larger systems, reduced, subquartic simulation time.

The pseudogap regime in the unitary Fermi gas

We discuss the pseudogap regime in the cold atomic unitary Fermi gas, with a particular emphasis on the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFMC) approach. We discuss possible signatures of the pseudogap, review experimental results, and survey analytic and quantum Monte Carlo techniques before focusing on AFMC calculations in the canonical ensemble. For the latter method, we discuss results for the heat capacity, energy-staggering pairing gap, spin susceptibility, and compare to experiment and other theoretical methods.

Auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the structural properties of nickel oxide.

Auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) has repeatedly demonstrated itself as one of the most accurate quantum many-body methods, capable of simulating both real and model systems. In this article, we investigate the application of AFQMC to realistic strongly correlated materials in periodic Gaussian basis sets. Using nickel oxide (NiO) as an example, we investigate the importance of finite size effects and basis set errors on the structural properties of the correlated solid. We provide benchmark calculations for NiO and compare our results to both experimental measurements and existing theoretical methods.

Auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations with multiple-projector pseudopotentials

We have implemented recently developed multiple-projector pseudopotentials into the plane-wave-based auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (pw-AFQMC) method. Multiple-projector pseudopotentials can yield smaller plane-wave cutoffs while maintaining or improving transferability. This reduces the computational cost of pw-AFQMC, increasing its reach to larger and more complicated systems. We discuss the use of nonlocal pseudopotentials in the separable Kleinman-Bylander form, and the implementation in pw-AFQMC of the multiple-projector optimized norm-conserving pseudopotential ONCVPSP of Hamann. The accuracy of the method is first demonstrated by equation-of-state calculations of the ionic insulator NaCl and more strongly correlated metal Cu. The method is then applied to calibrate the accuracy of density-functional theory (DFT) predictions of the phase stability of recently discovered high temperature and pressure superconducting sulfur hydride systems. We find that DFT results are in good agreement with pw-AFQMC, due to the near cancellation of electron-electron correlation effects between different structures.

Auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the molybdenum dimer.

Chemical accuracy is difficult to achieve for systems with transition metal atoms. Third row transition metal atoms are particularly challenging due to strong electron-electron correlation in localized d-orbitals. The Cr2 molecule is an outstanding example, which we previously treated with highly accurate auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) calculations [W. Purwanto et al., J. Chem. Phys. 142, 064302 (2015)]. Somewhat surprisingly, computational description of the isoelectronic Mo2 dimer has also, to date, been scattered and less than satisfactory. We present high-level theoretical benchmarks of the Mo2 singlet ground state (X(1)Σg (+)) and first triplet excited state (a(3)Σu (+)), using the phaseless AFQMC calculations. Extrapolation to the complete basis set limit is performed. Excellent agreement with experimental spectroscopic constants is obtained. We also present a comparison of the correlation effects in Cr2 and Mo2.

An auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo study of the chromium dimer.

The chromium dimer (Cr2) presents an outstanding challenge for many-body electronic structure methods. Its complicated nature of binding, with a formal sextuple bond and an unusual potential energy curve (PEC), is emblematic of the competing tendencies and delicate balance found in many strongly correlated materials. We present an accurate calculation of the PEC and ground state properties of Cr2, using the auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method. Unconstrained, exact AFQMC calculations are first carried out for a medium-sized but realistic basis set. Elimination of the remaining finite-basis errors and extrapolation to the complete basis set limit are then achieved with a combination of phaseless and exact AFQMC calculations. Final results for the PEC and spectroscopic constants are in excellent agreement with experiment.

Stability, energetics, and magnetic states of cobalt adatoms on graphene.

We investigate the stability and electronic properties of single Co atoms on graphene with near-exact many-body calculations. A frozen-orbital embedding scheme was combined with auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations to increase the reach in system sizes. Several energy minima are found as a function of the distance h between Co and graphene. Energetics only permit the Co atom to occupy the top site at h=2.2 Å in a high-spin 3d(8)4s(1) state, and the van der Waals region at h=3.3 Å in a high-spin 3d(7)4s(2) state. The findings provide an explanation for recent experimental results with Co on free-standing graphene.

Symmetry in auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations

We show how symmetry properties can be used to greatly increase the accuracy and efficiency in auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) calculations of electronic systems. With the Hubbard model as an example, we study symmetry preservation in two aspects of ground-state AFQMC calculations, the Hubbard-Straonovich transformation and the form of the trial wave function. It is shown that significant improvement over state-of-the-art calculations can be achieved. In unconstrained calculations, the implementation of symmetry often leads to shorter convergence time and much smaller statistical errors, thereby a substantial reduction of the sign problem. Moreover, certain excited states become possible to calculate which are otherwise beyond reach. In calculations with constraints, the use of symmetry can reduce the systematic error from the constraint. It also allows release-constraint calculations, leading to essentially exact results in many cases. Detailed comparisons are made with exact diagonalization results. Accurate ground-state energies are then presented for larger system sizes in the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model.

Pressure-induced diamond toβ-tin transition in bulk silicon: A quantum Monte Carlo study

The pressure-induced structural phase transition from diamond to $\ensuremath{\beta}$ tin in silicon is an excellent test for theoretical total-energy methods. The transition pressure provides a sensitive measure of small relative energy changes between the two phases (one a semiconductor and the other a semimetal). Experimentally, the transition pressure is well characterized. Density-functional results exhibit sensitivity to the particular form of the exchange-correlation functional. Even the generally much more accurate diffusion Monte Carlo method has shown a noticeable fixed-node error. We use the recently developed phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method to calculate the relative energy differences in the two phases. In this method, all but the error due to the phaseless constraint can be controlled systematically and driven to zero. In both structural phases we were able to benchmark the error of the phaseless constraint by carrying out exact unconstrained AFQMC calculations for small supercells. Comparison between the two shows that the systematic error in the absolute total energies due to the phaseless constraint is well within $0.5\text{ }\text{m}{E}_{\text{h}}/\text{atom}$. Consistent with these internal benchmarks, the transition pressure obtained by the phaseless AFQMC from large supercells is in very good agreement with experiment.

Phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations with plane waves and pseudopotentials: Applications to atoms and molecules

The phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AF QMC) method [S. Zhang and H. Krakauer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 136401 (2003)] is used to carry out a systematic study of the dissociation and ionization energies of second-row group 3A--7A atoms and dimers: Al, Si, P, S, and Cl. In addition, the ${\mathrm{P}}_{2}$ dimer is compared to the third-row ${\mathrm{As}}_{2}$ dimer, which is also triply bonded. This method projects the many-body ground state by means of importance-sampled random walks in the space of Slater determinants. The Monte Carlo phase problem, due to the electron-electron Coulomb interaction, is controlled via the phaseless approximation, with a trial wave function $\ensuremath{\mid}{\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{T}⟩$. As in previous calculations, a mean-field single Slater determinant is used as $\ensuremath{\mid}{\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{T}⟩$. The method is formulated in the Hilbert space defined by any chosen one-particle basis. The present calculations use a plane wave basis under periodic boundary conditions with norm-conserving pseudopotentials. Computational details of the plane wave AF QMC method are presented. The isolated systems chosen here allow a systematic study of the various algorithmic issues. We show the accuracy of the plane wave method and discuss its convergence with respect to parameters such as the supercell size and plane wave cutoff. The use of standard norm-conserving pseudopotentials in the many-body AF QMC framework is examined.

Auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo calculations of molecular systems with a Gaussian basis

We extend the recently introduced phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) approach to any single-particle basis and apply it to molecular systems with Gaussian basis sets. QMC methods in general scale favorably with the system size as a low power. A QMC approach with auxiliary fields, in principle, allows an exact solution of the Schrodinger equation in the chosen basis. However, the well-known sign/phase problem causes the statistical noise to increase exponentially. The phaseless method controls this problem by constraining the paths in the auxiliary-field path integrals with an approximate phase condition that depends on a trial wave function. In the present calculations, the trial wave function is a single Slater determinant from a Hartree-Fock calculation. The calculated all-electron total energies show typical systematic errors of no more than a few millihartrees compared to exact results. At equilibrium geometries in the molecules we studied, this accuracy is roughly comparable to that of coupled cluster with single and double excitations and with noniterative triples [CCSD(T)]. For stretched bonds in H(2)O, our method exhibits a better overall accuracy and a more uniform behavior than CCSD(T).
