. Education problems in Indonesia cover various aspects that influence the quality and effectiveness of learning. Some of these problems include irrelevant curricula, variations in the quality of teacher teaching, shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate educational facilities, less interactive learning methods, emphasis on standardized tests, limited technology in learning, unequal online access, and inadequate parental involvement. limited. Improvement efforts have been made through curriculum development, teacher training, facility improvements, use of interactive learning methods, holistic assessment, technology integration, and overcoming inequalities in access. The government has innovated by introducing the Independent Curriculum as an educational approach that is more contextual, interactive and student-centered. However, research shows that student learning outcomes in the material "Humans are Autonomous Creatures" with the topic "Being Critical of Mass Media, Ideology and Lifestyle in Catholic Religious Education" are still not optimal. To overcome this problem, this research implements the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model using Student Worksheets (LKPD) as a tool. The objectives of this research are (1) To find out how to increase the dimensions of critical thinking through the PBL model for phase E class students. X in the material "Be Critical and Responsible for the Mass Media, Ideology, and Lifestyle Today" at SMAN 1 Palangkaraya. Answers to Mass Media, Ideology and Current Lifestyles" at SMAN 1 Palangkaraya. (3) Knowing the increase in learning outcomes that are influenced by critical thinking skills through the PBL model for students in phase E class 1 Palangkaraya. The type of research used is qualitative classroom action research with a descriptive approach. Data is collected through tests and observations, and analyzed through data reduction steps, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research results show that the application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model with the help of E-LKPD is effective in improving learning outcomes and students' critical thinking abilities in autonomous human beings in class X SMAN 1 Palangkaraya.

Meningkatkan Kemampuan Berpikir Kritis Dengan Menggunakan Model Problem Based Learning Materi Manusia Makhluk Otonom Pada Kelas X-1 SMA Marsudirini Bogor

Education is one of the main foundations of a nation's development. Through education, young individuals are prepared to face the challenges of the future, developing the skills, knowledge, and values needed to contribute to the development of society and the country. A religious teacher has dual duties and roles as a preacher and educator. Realizing the tasks that exist within a religious teacher, researchers want to improve the ability of one aspect of students, namely critical thinking. The more often students are trained to think critically during the learning process in class, the more students' knowledge and experience will increase in solving problems inside and outside the classroom. Based on the results of initial observations carried out by researchers in class This can be shown from the number of students who dare to ask questions. Of the 17 students, only 3 people actively asked questions during the learning process. Apart from that, the questions asked by students are still at the memory level and the answers can be obtained from the textbook. Students are also not able to make learning conclusions in their language. Based on the problems above, the author believes that the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) learning model can improve students' critical thinking skills and also strengthen the value of the Pancasila student profile. This research aims to describe the influence of the Problem-Based Learning learning model on critical thinking skills regarding Autonomous Human Beings in class X-1 students at Marsudirini Bogor High School. The type of research used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques in this research used observation and written tests. The data analysis technique used consists of data reduction by selecting raw data into information, presenting data in the form of descriptions, tables, and graphs, as well as drawing conclusions using conclusions from research results that refer to the problem formulation. The use of the Problem-Based Learning model according to the syntax which includes orienting students to problems, organizing students to learn, guiding individual or group investigations, developing and presenting results, analyzing and evaluating the problem-solving process, is effective in improving critical thinking skills and participant learning outcomes educated on the subject of Human Autonomous Creatures in class X-1 of Marsudirini Bogor High School.

Causation, Creaturely and Divine

A biblical approach to reconciling God’s sovereignty with creaturely responsibility should avoid the extremes of global occasionalism and completely autonomous creatures. This paper evaluates the standard intermediary solutions offered by conservationists and concurrentists. It argues that while each contributes insights which a satisfactory account should retain, none is fully adequate. Even Leibniz’s sophisticated response, which accounts for providence, miracles, and moral responsibility, unacceptably abridges creaturely power to implement decisions. My alternative proposal seeks to explain how creatures can retain full responsibility for their actions even though God reserves the right to override creaturely power with His greater power.

Religious Protest and Religious Loyalty

In the accepted view, the basic disposition of believers is one of absolute obedience, humility, and lack of critique, doubt, or, indeed, defiance of God. Only through such a disposition do believers convey their absolute faith and establish the appropriate hierarchy between God and humans. This article challenges this view and argues that, in mainstream rabbinic tradition, the believer is not required to renounce his or her moral autonomy and certainly not his or her understanding of God and the world. Indeed, faith rests on such understanding; moreover, human autonomy is the mechanism through which humans convey God’s goodness and perfection. Their questions and criticism are part of a persistent effort to close the evident gap between their assumptions about God’s goodness and the flawed imperfect reality. The analysis focuses on rabbinic tradition but its implications go beyond it, presenting a model of a life of faith that compels subjects, as believers, to preserve their constitutive foundations as rational autonomous creatures.

Whose Body, Whose Life, Whose Decision? A Wesleyan Reflection on Personal Autonomy, Interdependence, and Human Flourishing

ABSTRACT The belief that human beings are rational, autonomous creatures, whose well-being is largely defined by their ability to make personal choices, dominates much of Western culture. Human dignity and the quality of life are largely seen in terms of individual rights and personal choice, valuing people's independence and freedom to act for their own welfare. This model negatively impacts those suffering from dementia. This paradigm is challenged by the Christian claim of being created in the image of God, defined within a Wesleyan framework of relational and interdependent connections. There is a solid body of evidence that persons flourish best in relationships that embody mutual care. The challenge for the church is to be involved in practical, quality care for all persons.

The essay deals with ideological and aesthetical typological convergences and congruencies in the works of the two great European writers of the second half of the 19 th century. It is shown that democratic thinking, synthesis of liberalism and humanism, which is a peculiar feature of both Turgenev and Eliot, are very much reflected in the system of concepts of the two works under analysis; both Eliot’s and Turgenev’s works are famous in the literary histories of their countries due to the masterful and original introduction into literature of a new type of a literary hero – the one from peasantry. It is stressed in the essay that the grounds for typological generalizations of these two works are the writers’ realistic and analytical approach to the artistic ways of depicting a human being’s fate under swiftly changing social, cultural and moral circumstances. The essay shows that Turgenev and Eliot depict province as socio-cultural wholeness. One of the main ideas of the essay is to show that both writers appeal to a human being who is an autonomous creature in terms of social, moral and spiritual existence, who thinks of himself as a unique and independent being and thus draws a border between himself and the world around and tries to establish his social independence and self-sufficiency. It is the reason why George Eliot and Ivan Turgenev set so many hopes on a human being’s high level of morality, his conscientious behavior in the situation of free choice, the concentration of which is higher, the more democratic and less patriarchal and paternalistic the contemporary world becomes. The author of the essay analyses what is called moral and ethical spaces of the writers’ works, where liberal and humanistic inclinations of Turgenev and Eliot are a sort of keystones; this fact determines ideological and artistic convergences of the writers even if we take into account their national, social, cultural and gender differences. It is shown in the essay that the parameters of these spaces are checked first of all by the images of the heroes taken from the humble people, who are, by both writers’ confidences, morally and ethically pure and solid because of their closeness to Nature. The author of the article shows how much important for Eliot and Turgenev as moral realists are pictures of the countryside landscapes, very much anthropological in the ways of their existence in the plots of the works, and, what is more, these pictures are philosophically and ethically sharpened by the authors, which once again makes them so close to one another. It is proved in the essay that romantic features in the images of the authors’ protagonists is a serious ground to think of these writers in terms of poetical convergences. It is also demonstrated that the comparative method of studying Adam Bede and Notes of a Hunter gives a good chance to reveal some points more vividly should we look at these works separately.

A Scene-Based Episodic Memory System for a Simulated Autonomous Creature

In this paper the authors present the development of a scene-based episodic memory module for the cognitive architecture controlling an autonomous virtual creature, in a simulated 3D environment. The scene-based episodic memory has the role of improving the creature’s navigation system, by evoking the objects to be considered in planning, according to episodic remembrance of earlier scenes testified by the creature where these objects were present in the past. They introduce the main background on human memory systems and episodic memory study, and provide the main ideas behind the experiment.

Too Much of a Good Thing: How Splendid Technologies Can Go Wrong

I begin with a brief account of my ordinary workday. Professionally I am engrossed in matters of national health policy, and particularly the growing cost of health care, once again into double digit inflation. Those costs are increasing the number of uninsured, putting great pressure on the federal programs of Medicare and Medicaid, and threatening employer-provided health insurance. What is to be done about that? To get to my place of work, up the Hudson River, I cross the Tappan Zee Bridge, which is choked with cars, well beyond its original projected capacity, and fed by a highway that features daily traffic jams. What is to be done about that? The main source of rising health care costs is the emergence of new technologies and the intensified use of old technologies, accounting for some 40 percent of the annual increase. The main source of the traffic problem, here and elsewhere, is simply too many cars, ever increasing in number. Not many people see analogies between health care technologies and automobiles, but there is nothing like sitting in a traffic jam to expand one's imagination. The problems are more alike than anyone might guess. Both problems raise two familiar questions, now in a new guise. One is ancient: how should we cope with those features of our lives, and thus of our human nature, where what is good gradually turns into something bad, usually inadvertently? Medical technology is an uncommon human benefit, but when its pursuit and deployment begin to create economic fits, public and private, its good begins to turn bad. The automobile increases freedom and mobility, and like medical technology is a source of enormous national economic benefit. But when our air is besmogged, our highways jammed, and our commutes a misery, its good turns bad. The second question my two illustrative technologies raise is this: is technology simply a neutral reality, neither good nor bad in itself, but to be evaluated solely on the basis of the uses to which it is put--or does it have a life of its own, subtly shaping our values and ways of life whether we choose that to happen or not? As opponents of gun control are fond of saying Guns don't kill; only people kill. That may be narrowly true, but is it the full truth? Is it irrelevant for our safety how many guns we have in our house? And are we fully free--the autonomous creatures we are alleged to be--to use or not use medical technology as we like, or to drive or not drive an automobile, or does each technology draw us to its use in ways often beyond our control? While there are some people who cleverly manage to avoid the health care system altogether, putting their faith in prayer or austere living or exotic jungle potions, most of us can't get away with that. When we hurt we go to the doctor, and doctors these days turn to technology to diagnose us and to treat us. We expect no less. And while there are some strange creatures in Manhattan who have never learned to drive, few of us have successfully evaded the American car culture. In short, medical technology and the automobile are social realities most of us cannot imagine living without. In each case we can preach moderation; in each, moderation has proved hard to come by. In each case, the cumulative social impact of the technologies seems beyond our control, in great part precisely because it is a good that we cannot easily do without and which (of its very nature?) leads us to want more of it than we now have. The Ends of Technology Technology responds to some deep and enduring human needs: for survival (agriculture, defense); for increased choice, pleasure, and convenience (telephones, movies, escalators); for economic benefit (computers and software, machine tools, airplanes for export); for liberating visions of human possibility (space travel, instant world-wide communication). Medical technology and the automobile have many if not most of these attractions, and serve most of those needs. …

Talking Eye: Autonomous creatures for augmented chatting

This paper describes an interactive system called “Talking Eye”, which casually chats with humans via speech voice, and reports the results of a psychological experiment to evaluate social behaviors on interaction with the Talking Eye system. We have been investigating the mechanism of chatting in order to create local interaction between humans and computers through the dialogue process. We have constructed a prototype system, i.e., Talking Eye, with a mechanism for producing conversational behaviors according to the current situation using a multi-agent architecture. The results of experiments have demonstrated that humans can find affinity with the system through the process of interaction even if the conversational purpose is not achieved; the result of deriving conversational behaviors from the current situation based on an architecture with multi-agents. The main goal of this study is to build autonomous creatures with a mechanism to promote further empathic interaction with humans.

To enhance the realism of computer animation sequences, the interaction between autonomous creatures and their environment needs to be modelled. Two such commonly occurring phenomena, dust and water splashing on impact, are presented in this paper. These pseudodynamic models, based on particle system concepts, are designed for hoppers with approximately elliptical bases. The proposed models can be extended for use with multi-legged creatures. The dust model is parameterized by creature dimensions, soil particle dimensions and wind direction. The splash model is parameterized by creature dimensions and water film thickness. Programmable Bricks: Toys to think with

In this paper, we discuss the applications and implications of the Programmable Brick-a tiny, portable computer embedded inside a LEGO® brick, capable of interacting with the physical world in a large variety of ways. We describe how Programmable Bricks make possible a wide range of new design activities for children, and we discuss experiences in using Programmable Bricks in three types of applications: autonomous creatures, active environments, and personal science experiments.
