Ensemble learning for retinal disease recognition under limited resources.

Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images provide crucial insights into the health of the posterior ocular segment. Therefore, the advancement of automated image analysis methods is imperative to equip clinicians and researchers with quantitative data, thereby facilitating informed decision-making. The application of deep learning (DL)-based approaches has gained extensive traction for executing these analysis tasks, demonstrating remarkable performance compared to labor-intensive manual analyses. However, the acquisition of retinal OCT images often presents challenges stemming from privacy concerns and the resource-intensive labeling procedures, which contradicts the prevailing notion that DL models necessitate substantial data volumes for achieving superior performance. Moreover, limitations in available computational resources constrain the progress of high-performance medical artificial intelligence, particularly in less developed regions and countries. This paper introduces a novel ensemble learning mechanism designed for recognizing retinal diseases under limited resources (e.g., data, computation). The mechanism leverages insights from multiple pre-trained models, facilitating the transfer and adaptation of their knowledge to retinal OCT images. This approach establishes a robust model even when confronted with limited labeled data, eliminating the need for an extensive array of parameters, as required in learning from scratch. Comprehensive experimentation on real-world datasets demonstrates that the ensemble models constructed by the proposed ensemble method show superior performance over the baseline models under sparse labeled data, especially the triple ensemble model, which achieves the accuracy of 92.06%, which is 8.27%, 7.99%, and 11.14% better than the three baseline models, respectively. In addition, compared with the three baseline models learned from scratch, the triple ensemble model has fewer trainable parameters, only 3.677M, which is lower than the three baseline models of 8.013M, 4.302M, and 20.158M, respectively.

Quality assurance framework for rapid automatic analysis deployment in medical imaging

PurposeAutomatic image analysis algorithms have an increasing role in clinical quality assurance (QA) in medical imaging. Although the implementation of QA calculation algorithms may be straightforward at the development level, actual deployment of a new method to clinical routine may require substantial additional effort from supporting services. We sought to develop a multimodal system that enables rapid implementation of new QA analysis methods in clinical practice. MethodsThe QA system was built using freely available open-source software libraries. The included features were results database, database interface, interactive user interface, e-mail error dispatcher, data processing backend, and DICOM server. An in-house database interface was built, providing the developers of analyses with simple access to the results database. An open-source DICOM server was used for image traffic and automatic initiation of modality-specific QA image analyses. ResultsThe QA framework enabled rapid adaptation of new analysis methods to automatic image processing workflows. The system provided online data review via an easily accessible user interface. In case of deviations, the system supported simultaneous review of the results for the user and QA expert to trigger corrective actions. In particular, embedded error thresholds, trend analyses, and error-feedback channels were provided to facilitate continuous monitoring and to enable pre-emptive corrective actions. ConclusionAn effective and novel QA framework incorporating easy adaptation and scalability to automated image analysis methods was developed. The framework provides an efficient and responsive web-based tool to manage the normal operation, trends, errors, and abnormalities in medical image quality.

Automatic cochlear multimodal 3D image segmentation and analysis using atlas–model-based method

Objectives: To propose an automated fast cochlear segmentation, length, and volume estimation method from clinical 3D multimodal images which has a potential role in the choice of cochlear implant type, surgery planning, and robotic surgeries. Methods: Two datasets from different countries were used. These datasets include 219 clinical 3D images of cochlea from 3 modalities: CT, CBCT, and MR. The datasets include different ages, genders, and types of cochlear implants. We propose an atlas–model-based method for cochlear segmentation and measurement based on high-resolution μCT model and A-value. The method was evaluated using 3D landmarks located by two experts. Results: The average error was mm and the average time required to process an image was seconds (P<0.001). The volume of the cochlea ranged from 73.96 mm to 106.97 mm, the cochlear length ranged from 36.69 to 45.91 mm at the lateral wall and from 29.12 to 39.05 mm at the organ of Corti. Discussion: We propose a method that produces nine different automated measurements of the cochlea: volume of scala tympani, volume of scala vestibuli, central lengths of the two scalae, the scala tympani lateral wall length, and the organ of Corti length in addition to three measurements related to A-value. Conclusion: This automatic cochlear image segmentation and analysis method can help clinician process multimodal cochlear images in approximately 5 seconds using a simple computer. The proposed method is publicly available for free download as an extension for 3D Slicer software.

Quantifying innervation facilitated by deep learning in wound healing

The peripheral nerves (PNs) innervate the dermis and epidermis, and are suggested to play an important role in wound healing. Several methods to quantify skin innervation during wound healing have been reported. Those usually require multiple observers, are complex and labor-intensive, and the noise/background associated with the immunohistochemistry (IHC) images could cause quantification errors/user bias. In this study, we employed the state-of-the-art deep neural network, Denoising Convolutional Neural Network (DnCNN), to perform pre-processing and effectively reduce the noise in the IHC images. Additionally, we utilized an automated image analysis tool, assisted by Matlab, to accurately determine the extent of skin innervation during various stages of wound healing. The 8 mm wound is generated using a circular biopsy punch in the wild-type mouse. Skin samples were collected on days 3, 7, 10 and 15, and sections from paraffin-embedded tissues were stained against pan-neuronal marker- protein-gene-product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) antibody. On day 3 and day 7, negligible nerve fibers were present throughout the wound with few only on the lateral boundaries of the wound. On day 10, a slight increase in nerve fiber density appeared, which significantly increased on day 15. Importantly, we found a positive correlation (R2 = 0.926) between nerve fiber density and re-epithelization, suggesting an association between re-innervation and re-epithelization. These results established a quantitative time course of re-innervation in wound healing, and the automated image analysis method offers a novel and useful tool to facilitate the quantification of innervation in the skin and other tissues.

Foci-Xpress: Automated and Fast Nuclear Foci Counting Tool.

In the nucleus, distinct, discrete spots or regions called "foci" have been identified, each harboring a specific molecular function. Accurate and efficient quantification of these foci is essential for understanding cellular dynamics and signaling pathways. In this study, we present an innovative automated image analysis method designed to precisely quantify subcellular foci within the cell nucleus. Manual foci counting methods can be tedious and time-consuming. To address these challenges, we developed an open-source software that automatically counts the number of foci from the indicated image files. We compared the foci counting efficiency, velocity, accuracy, and convenience of Foci-Xpress with those of other conventional methods in foci-induced models. We can adjust the brightness of foci to establish a threshold. The Foci-Xpress method was significantly faster than other conventional methods. Its accuracy was similar to that of conventional methods. The most significant strength of Foci-Xpress is automation, which eliminates the need for analyzing equipment while counting. This enhanced throughput facilitates comprehensive statistical analyses and supports robust conclusions from experiments. Furthermore, automation completely rules out biases caused by researchers, such as manual errors or daily variations. Thus, Foci-Xpress is a convincing, convenient, and easily accessible focus-counting tool for cell biologists.

Automated human induced pluripotent stem cell colony segmentation for use in cell culture automation applications

Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have demonstrated great promise for a variety of applications that include cell therapy and regenerative medicine. Production of clinical grade hiPSCs requires reproducible manufacturing methods with stringent quality-controls such as those provided by image-controlled robotic processing systems. In this paper we present an automated image analysis method for identifying and picking hiPSC colonies for clonal expansion using the CellXTM robotic cell processing system. This method couples a light weight deep learning segmentation approach based on the U-Net architecture to automatically segment the hiPSC colonies in full field of view (FOV) high resolution phase contrast images with a standardized approach for suggesting pick locations. The utility of this method is demonstrated using images and data obtained from the CellXTM system where clinical grade hiPSCs were reprogrammed, clonally expanded, and differentiated into retinal organoids for use in treatment of patients with inherited retinal degenerative blindness.

Deep Learning-Based Image Classification for Major Mosquito Species Inhabiting Korea.

Mosquitoes are one of the deadliest insects, causing harm to humans worldwide. Preemptive prevention and forecasting are important to prevent mosquito-borne diseases. However, current mosquito identification is mostly conducted manually, which consumes time, wastes labor, and causes human error. In this study, we developed an automatic image analysis method to identify mosquito species using a deep learning-based object detection technique. Color and fluorescence images of live mosquitoes were acquired using a mosquito capture device and were used to develop a deep learning-based object detection model. Among the deep learning-based object identification models, the combination of a swine transformer and a faster region-convolutional neural network model demonstrated the best performance, with a 91.7% F1-score. This indicates that the proposed automatic identification method can be rapidly applied for efficient analysis of species and populations of vector-borne mosquitoes with reduced labor in the field.

A deep learning-based automated image analysis for histological evaluation of broiler pectoral muscle

Global market demand for chicken breast muscle with high yield and quality, together with the high incidence rate of breast muscle abnormalities in recent years highlights the need for tools that can provide a rapid and precise evaluation of breast muscle development and morphology. In this study, we used a novel deep learning-based automated image analysis workflow combining Fiji (ImageJ) with Cellpose and MorphoLibJ plugins to generate an automated diameter and cross-sectional area quantification for broiler breast muscle. We compared data of myofiber diameter from 14-day-old broiler chicks, generated either by manual analysis or by automated analysis. Comparison between manual and automated analysis methods exhibited a striking accuracy rate of up to 99.91%. Moreover, the automated analysis method was much faster. When the automated analysis method was implemented on 84 breast muscle cross-section images it characterized 59,128 myofibers within 4.2 h, while manual analysis of 27 breast muscle cross-section images enabled analysis of 17,333 myofibers in 54 h. The automated image analysis method was also more productive, producing data sets of both diameter and cross-sectional area at an 80-fold higher rate than the manual analysis (26,279 vs. 321 data sets per hour, respectively). In order to demonstrate the ability of this automated image analysis tool to detect differences in breast muscle histomorphology, we applied it on cross sections from chicks of control and in ovo feeding group, injected with a methionine source [2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio) butanoic calcium salt (HMTBa)], known to effect skeletal muscle histomorphology. Analysis was performed on 19,807 myofibers from the control group and 21,755 myofibers from the HMTBa group and was completed in less than 1 h. The clear advantages of this automated image analysis workflow characterized by high precision, high speed, and high productiveness demonstrate its potential to be implemented as a reproducible and readily adaptable research or diagnostic tool for chicken breast muscle development and morphology.

Lifestyle Changes Reduced Estimated White Matter Hyperintensities Based on Retinal Image Analysis.

This study evaluates if there is an association between lifestyle changes and the risk of small vessel disease (SVD) as measured by cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMH) estimated by the automatic retinal image analysis (ARIA) method. We recruited 274 individuals into a community cohort study. Subjects were assessed at baseline and annually with the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II Questionnaire (HPLP-II) and underwent a simple physical assessment. Retinal images were taken using a non-mydriatic digital fundus camera to evaluate the level of WMH estimated by ARIA (ARIA-WMH) to measure the risk of small vessel disease. We calculated the changes from baseline to one year for the six domains of HPLP-II and analysed the relationship with the ARIA-WMH change. A total of 193 (70%) participants completed both the HPLP-II and ARIA-WMH assessments. The mean age was 59.1 ± 9.4 years, and 76.2% (147) were women. HPLP-II was moderate (Baseline, 138.96 ± 20.93; One-year, 141.97 ± 21.85). We observed a significant difference in ARIA-WMH change between diabetes and non-diabetes subjects (0.03 vs. -0.008, respectively, p = 0.03). A multivariate analysis model showed a significant interaction between the health responsibility (HR) domain and diabetes (p = 0.005). For non-diabetes subgroups, those with improvement in the HR domain had significantly decreased in ARIA-WMH than those without HR improvement (-0.04 vs. 0.02, respectively, p = 0.003). The physical activity domain was negatively related to the change in ARIA-WMH (p = 0.02). In conclusion, this study confirms that there is a significant association between lifestyle changes and ARIA-WMH. Furthermore, increasing health responsibility for non-diabetes subjects reduces the risk of having severe white matter hyperintensities.

Biopsy-detected myocardial fibrosis predicts adverse cardiac events after pulmonary valve replacement in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot.

Risk factors associated with adverse cardiac events (cardiac AEs) after pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot are incompletely understood. In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between histological myocardial fibrosis and cardiac AEs after PVR in patients with rTOF. We consecutively collected clinical, cardiac magnetic resonance, echocardiography and electrocardiogram data of 51 patients with rTOF who underwent surgical PVR. The right ventricular outflow tract tissue was collected during the PVR and the degree of histological myocardial fibrosis was determined by a tailor-made automated image analysis method of picrosirius red staining. The median follow-up time was 4.9 years, and 14 patients had cardiac AEs (a composite of heart failure admission and arrhythmia) during follow-up. The total analysis area of myocardial samples was 5782.18 mm2, and the median percentage of myocardial fibrosis was 20.6% (interquartile range 16.7-27.0%), which were significantly elevated in patients with cardiac AEs compared with patients without cardiac AEs (24.1% vs 19.7%, P = 0.007). Right ventricular ejection fraction and left ventricular end-systolic volume index were significantly associated with myocardial fibrosis in multivariable stepwise linear regression analysis (R2 = 0.238). Cox proportional hazards regression identified degree of myocardial fibrosis [hazard ratio 1.127; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.047-1.213; P = 0.001] and age at PVR (hazard ratio 1.062; 95% CI 1.010-1.116; P = 0.019) were associated with increased risk of cardiac AEs. The incidence of adverse cardiac events was significantly increased when myocardial fibrosis >20.1% and age at PVR >18.2 years. Histological myocardial fibrosis was associated with biventricular systolic functions in rTOF. Higher myocardial fibrosis and older age at PVR are independent risk factors for the adverse cardiac events after PVR in patients with rTOF.

Automated image analysis method to detect and quantify fat cell infiltration in hematoxylin and eosin stained human pancreas histology images

Fatty infiltration in pancreas leading to steatosis is a major risk factor in pancreas transplantation. Hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) is one of the common histological staining techniques that provides information on the tissue cytoarchitecture. Adipose (fat) cells accumulation in pancreas has been shown to impact beta cell survival, its endocrine function and pancreatic steatosis and can cause non-alcoholic fatty pancreas disease (NAFPD). The current automated tools (E.g. Adiposoft) available for fat analysis are suited for white fat tissue which is homogeneous and easier to segment unlike heterogeneous tissues such as pancreas where fat cells continue to play critical physiopathological functions. The currently, available pancreas segmentation tool focuses on endocrine islet segmentation based on cell nuclei detection for diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. In the current study, we present a fat quantifying tool, Fatquant, which identifies fat cells in heterogeneous H and E tissue sections with reference to diameter of fat cell. Using histological images from a public database, we observed an intersection over union of 0.797 to 0.962 and 0.675 to 0.937 for manual versus Fatquant analysis of pancreas and liver, respectively.

Automated methods for image detection of cultural heritage: Overviews and perspectives

AbstractRemote sensing data covering large geographical areas can be easily accessed and are being acquired with greater frequency. The massive volume of data requires an automated image analysis system. By taking advantage of the increasing availability of data using computer vision, we can design specific systems to automate data analysis and detection of archaeological objects. In the past decade, there has been a rise in the use of automated methods to assist in the identification of archaeological sites in remote sensing imagery. These applications offer an important contribution to non‐intrusive archaeological exploration, helping to reduce the traditional human workload and time by signalling areas with a higher probability of presenting archaeological sites for exploration. This survey describes the state of the art of existing automated image analysis methods in archaeology and highlights the improvements thus achieved in the detection of archaeological monuments and areas of interest in landscape‐scale satellite and aerial imagery. It also presents a discussion of the benefits and limitations of automatic detection of archaeological structures, proposing new approaches and possibilities.

Detection of Paddy Blast: An Image Processing Approach with Threshold based OTSU

If rice infections spread, the agricultural industry as well as the people who eat rice as their primary food grain suffer greatly from production and financial losses as well as food shortages. One of the deadliest diseases that can affect paddy plants at any stage of development and hinder the growth of rice plants is paddy leaf blast. Because the brown spot and the leaf blast have the same appearance but distinct shapes, it is quite difficult to distinguish between them. In this case, paddy leaf blast is detected using computer vision methods. But because of their resemblance to other spots and poor color channel selection, previous procedures are difficult, time-consuming, and poorly able to detect blasts. In this article, an effective and automated image analysis method has been proposed to identify paddy leaf blasts that can identify leaf blasts by utilizing various shapes. Additionally, the process minimized pointless data exploration and provided superior accuracy of 95.34 percent.

Deep learning in retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT): A comprehensive survey

Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images provide fundamental information regarding the health of the posterior eye (e.g., the retina and choroid). Thus, the development of automatic image analysis methods (e.g., segmentation) is fundamental to provide clinicians and researchers with quantitative data that facilitates decision making. In recent years, various machine learning (ML) methods have been developed to perform these automated image analyses, improving performance over traditional methods, increasing repeatability, and reducing the use of time-consuming manual analysis. Deep learning (DL), a sub-field of ML, represents a new approach that can improve image processing outcomes. Results published to date demonstrate that DL architectures generally achieve superior performance to previously proposed methods based on traditional image analysis or early ML techniques. Thus, DL methods for OCT image analysis have provided an important advance in the area of retinal layer segmentation in images from healthy eyes as well as those with pathologies. This paper provides a comprehensive narrative literature review of current DL layer segmentation methods applied to OCT images of the posterior segment of the eye. The manuscript provides an overview on the state-of-the-art in deep learning as well as highlighting some important areas for future developments to extend the analysis methods in this field.

Artificial Intelligence for Colonoscopy: Past, Present, and Future.

During the past decades, many automated image analysis methods have been developed for colonoscopy. Real-time implementation of the most promising methods during colonoscopy has been tested in clinical trials, including several recent multi-center studies. All trials have shown results that may contribute to prevention of colorectal cancer. We summarize the past and present development of colonoscopy video analysis methods, focusing on two categories of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies used in clinical trials. These are (1) analysis and feedback for improving colonoscopy quality and (2) detection of abnormalities. Our survey includes methods that use traditional machine learning algorithms on carefully designed hand-crafted features as well as recent deep-learning methods. Lastly, we present the gap between current state-of-the-art technology and desirable clinical features and conclude with future directions of endoscopic AI technology development that will bridge the current gap.

LB1030 Automated image analysis methods to detect mast cells in skin

Mast cells are a key cell in the innate immune system. These cells are tissue resident and are considered to act as sentinels for the detection of a multitude of different ligands. Activation of mast cells via stimulation of IgE receptors underlies allergic reactions to food, pollen, pet dander, and many other allergens. Stimulation of mast cells results in their activation leading to degranulation – a process in which the cell releases extracellular mediators like histamine, proteases, and cytokines. These mediators can then go on to activate other cell types nearby or can recruit more immune cells to the tissue. Some chronic pruritic diseases are thought to involve mast cells in the skin and many studies have demonstrated an increase in total mast cell number in skin from atopic dermatitis (AD) or allergic contact dermatitis (CAD). Previous methods relied on staining of skin biopsy sections with a chromogenic stain (like toulidine blue), then manual counting of the mast cells in small sections of the biopsy. More recently, the use of fluorescently-tagged avidin has been used to detect mast cells in skin biopsies, which represents a more specific detection method. A challenge still remains in the differentiation between quiescent (resting) and active (or degranulated) mast cells. Here we describe a method for the automated detection and quantification of quiescent and resting mast cells based on cell morphology, using commercially available image software analysis tools. Our method was applied to human skin biopsies that were treated to induce degranulation and to skin biopsies collected from AD patients. In contrast to earlier results, we do not observe an increase in total mast cell number nor in the number of active mast cells in the skin of AD patients. This method allows for the unbiased detection of mast cells in human skin with out the need to develop de novo proprietary algorithms.

Assessment of image quality on color fundus retinal images using the automatic retinal image analysis

Image quality assessment is essential for retinopathy detection on color fundus retinal image. However, most studies focused on the classification of good and poor quality without considering the different types of poor quality. This study developed an automatic retinal image analysis (ARIA) method, incorporating transfer net ResNet50 deep network with the automatic features generation approach to automatically assess image quality, and distinguish eye-abnormality-associated-poor-quality from artefact-associated-poor-quality on color fundus retinal images. A total of 2434 retinal images, including 1439 good quality and 995 poor quality (483 eye-abnormality-associated-poor-quality and 512 artefact-associated-poor-quality), were used for training, testing, and 10-ford cross-validation. We also analyzed the external validation with the clinical diagnosis of eye abnormality as the reference standard to evaluate the performance of the method. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for testing good quality against poor quality were 98.0%, 99.1%, and 98.6%, and for differentiating between eye-abnormality-associated-poor-quality and artefact-associated-poor-quality were 92.2%, 93.8%, and 93.0%, respectively. In external validation, our method achieved an area under the ROC curve of 0.997 for the overall quality classification and 0.915 for the classification of two types of poor quality. The proposed approach, ARIA, showed good performance in testing, 10-fold cross validation and external validation. This study provides a novel angle for image quality screening based on the different poor quality types and corresponding dealing methods. It suggested that the ARIA can be used as a screening tool in the preliminary stage of retinopathy grading by telemedicine or artificial intelligence analysis.

Chaotic Sparrow Search Algorithm with Deep Transfer Learning Enabled Breast Cancer Classification on Histopathological Images.

Simple SummaryCancer is considered the most significant public health issue which severely threatens people’s health. The occurrence and mortality rate of breast cancer have been growing consistently. Initial precise diagnostics act as primary factors in improving the endurance rate of patients. Even though there are several means to identify breast cancer, histopathological diagnosis is now considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of cancer. However, the difficulty of histopathological image and the rapid rise in workload render this process time-consuming, and the outcomes might be subjected to pathologists’ subjectivity. Hence, the development of a precise and automatic histopathological image analysis method is essential for the field. Recently, the deep learning method for breast cancer pathological image classification has made significant progress, which has become mainstream in this field. Therefore, in this work, we focused on the design of metaheuristics with deep learning based breast cancer classification process. The proposed model is found to be an effective tool to assist physicians in the decision making process.Breast cancer is the major cause behind the death of women worldwide and is responsible for several deaths each year. Even though there are several means to identify breast cancer, histopathological diagnosis is now considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of cancer. Recently, the deep learning method for breast cancer pathological image classification has made significant progress, which has become mainstream in this field. This study introduces a novel chaotic sparrow search algorithm with a deep transfer learning-enabled breast cancer classification (CSSADTL-BCC) model on histopathological images. The presented CSSADTL-BCC model mainly focused on the recognition and classification of breast cancer. To accomplish this, the CSSADTL-BCC model primarily applies the Gaussian filtering (GF) approach to eradicate the occurrence of noise. In addition, a MixNet-based feature extraction model is employed to generate a useful set of feature vectors. Moreover, a stacked gated recurrent unit (SGRU) classification approach is exploited to allot class labels. Furthermore, CSSA is applied to optimally modify the hyperparameters involved in the SGRU model. None of the earlier works have utilized the hyperparameter-tuned SGRU model for breast cancer classification on HIs. The design of the CSSA for optimal hyperparameter tuning of the SGRU model demonstrates the novelty of the work. The performance validation of the CSSADTL-BCC model is tested by a benchmark dataset, and the results reported the superior execution of the CSSADTL-BCC model over recent state-of-the-art approaches.

Fully Automatic Analysis of Muscle B-Mode Ultrasound Images Based on the Deep Residual Shrinkage U-Net

The parameters of muscle ultrasound images reflect the function and state of muscles. They are of great significance to the diagnosis of muscle diseases. Because manual labeling is time-consuming and laborious, the automatic labeling of muscle ultrasound image parameters has become a research topic. In recent years, there have been many methods that apply image processing and deep learning to automatically analyze muscle ultrasound images. However, these methods have limitations, such as being non-automatic, not applicable to images with complex noise, and only being able to measure a single parameter. This paper proposes a fully automatic muscle ultrasound image analysis method based on image segmentation to solve these problems. This method is based on the Deep Residual Shrinkage U-Net(RS-Unet) to accurately segment ultrasound images. Compared with the existing methods, the accuracy of our method shows a great improvement. The mean differences of pennation angle, fascicle length and muscle thickness are about 0.09°, 0.4 mm and 0.63 mm, respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed method realizes the accurate measurement of muscle parameters and exhibits stability and robustness.

OCT Retinal and Choroidal Layer Instance Segmentation Using Mask R-CNN.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the posterior segment of the eye provides high-resolution cross-sectional images that allow visualization of individual layers of the posterior eye tissue (the retina and choroid), facilitating the diagnosis and monitoring of ocular diseases and abnormalities. The manual analysis of retinal OCT images is a time-consuming task; therefore, the development of automatic image analysis methods is important for both research and clinical applications. In recent years, deep learning methods have emerged as an alternative method to perform this segmentation task. A large number of the proposed segmentation methods in the literature focus on the use of encoder–decoder architectures, such as U-Net, while other architectural modalities have not received as much attention. In this study, the application of an instance segmentation method based on region proposal architecture, called the Mask R-CNN, is explored in depth in the context of retinal OCT image segmentation. The importance of adequate hyper-parameter selection is examined, and the performance is compared with commonly used techniques. The Mask R-CNN provides a suitable method for the segmentation of OCT images with low segmentation boundary errors and high Dice coefficients, with segmentation performance comparable with the commonly used U-Net method. The Mask R-CNN has the advantage of a simpler extraction of the boundary positions, especially avoiding the need for a time-consuming graph search method to extract boundaries, which reduces the inference time by 2.5 times compared to U-Net, while segmenting seven retinal layers.
